Madeleine Albright: 'There's just nothing going on' with Romney

DUBLIN, OH – Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said her impression after attending a recent Mitt Romney speech is that "there's just nothing going on" with the Republican presidential nominee. She said his understanding of foreign policy not only lacks depth but diminishes U.S. standing abroad.

Fmr. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright joins Morning Joe to discuss the lingering war in Afghanistan, Romney's criticism of President Obama's foreign policy record, the latest in Syria and why Romney didn't mention Afghanistan in his RNC speech.

"He is so two-dimensional. I mean, up close and personal, there's just nothing going on," she said.

Speaking at a Women for Obama rally here just outside of Columbus, OH on Sunday, Albright told the crowd that she had recently been on hand when Romney delivered his address at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York.

"It's the sense that I've had throughout the campaign that it's unclear what [Romney] really believes in," Albright told reporters after the event. "I think when you contrast him with President Obama, who also gave a speech later there, and President Clinton, who spoke several times there, there is not, kind of, a sense of depth."

Albright also mentioned the video of Romney suggesting that 47 percent of Americans view themselves as victims, arguing that the comments "diminish us in many different ways" and that the former Massachusetts governor's rhetoric sounds like he wants to start another war.

Albright, who in 1996 was appointed by President Bill Clinton to become the first female secretary of state, has been an active surrogate for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.  She has traveled to swing states across the country, often reaching out to women voters. Sunday's event came just two days before Ohio begins early voting -- and while she did mention women's issues -- most of her speech was aimed at discrediting Romney's foreign policy views.

While speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative, GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney offered his take on why current US foreign aid practices are generally ineffective, saying that building a strong nation through free enterprise is the best assistance America can provide to developing and impoverished nations.

The former top diplomat also defended the Obama administration’s handling of the recent attack on a U.S. Consulate in Libya, telling reporters, "I think they said what they knew, when they knew it."

The attack, which U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice originally said was spontaneous, has since been deemed by the administration as a coordinated and planned effort. The Romney campaign pounced on what they described as mixed messages.

White House senior adviser David Plouffe said on NBC's "Meet The Press" that it was not initially clear if the attack in Benghazi was an act of terror, while Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod said on CNN's "State of the Union" that, "The president called it an act of terror the day after it happened."

“The Obama White House and the Obama campaign can’t seem to get their stories straight on the attack on our consulate in Libya,” Romney spokesperson Ryan Williams said in press release.

“These inconsistencies raise even more questions about the confusion and mixed messages that have marked the White House’s response from the very beginning.”

Albright accused Republicans of politicizing the death of four Americans.

"It takes a while to know what all the facts are. So I believe that the administration is telling us what they know and they are being very careful not to get ahead of the whole investigative process," she said. "We also support the president's re-election because we want a chief executive who actually understands foreign policy."

For all of you who get their information from Fox you should know that on Feb. 14, 2010 Fox overturned a lawsuit against them by arguing that the first amendment allows them to report made up news. They are the equvilalint of the Enquirer.

That would explain why MSNBC holds the record for most retracted statments.

That would explain why Fox doesn't retract statements. They don't have to because they are entertainment and don't care if they report the truth.

I wonder if Albright saw the "60 Minutes" segment earlier this evening? Karzai (president of Afganistan) was being interviewed and he stated repeatedly that the obama administration was the cause of many of the problems and actions that are going on over there in "his" country right now. And yes, the interview was in English and Karzai speaks excellent English so there was no possibility of misinterpreting. He might not be the most believable of people, but then I would tend to believe anyone and anything before I would believe one word that came out of obama's mouth.

It is unfortunate that the tea party hijacked the primary process and left us with no candidate that could be a viable alternative to Obama. The tea party can rally a very small number of very active people, but can never win a general election. I may not like McCain, but I can respect him, and Powell, Huntsman, Condoleezza Rice, Olympia Snowe and a number of other statesmen I would be happy to vote for. Instead with are left with the insane clown posse of Newt, Santorum, Perry, Cain and Mitt. Comedians will be howling for generations.

actually jake - there are examples of Romneys generosity going back decades - He gave his entire inheritence from his father to charity, he declined pay as gov of mass. - opting to have his pay put into the states coffers, he also declined pay as chairman of the olympics. Last year he gave more in charity then obama , biden and the clintons COMBINED. You should spend sometime learning about a canidate BEFORE you start trashing them

The FACT is, that OBAMA is a "HABITUAL LIAR" and has fooled the liberals like Jim Jones. The liberals have no common sense nor enough education to be objective. They are backing Obama, due to being supported by Welfare and Food Stamps. Liberals are afraid that Romney will pull their entitlements away and they will have nothing to fall back on. This is the ONLY reason Obama is getting the liberal vote. This is really pitiful and PATHETIC, that these people don't have the backbone to stand up for what is right and wrong. Obama is getting more power and control which is what his personal agenda is. A want to be dictator!!!

The Office of the Presidency deserves respect. The person of the president must earn respect. Obama has failed to earn respect... just as he has failed to earn his Nobel Peace Prize.

Obama has failed to earn your respect, not mine. I can appreciate a man who in acts a health care program designed to make sure that all Americans can go to the doctor. You'll notice that one of the first stages of the program assures that babies with pre existing conditions can now afford to be treated for their conditions. Even if I don't agree with every thing Obama does this deserves respect.

Did you mean "enact"? In any event ObamaCare is loathed by the American Public. It has never enjoyed majority support in any reputable poll.

Oh, and by the way ObamaCare is NOT universal care. It does NOT "make sure that all Americans can go to the doctor."

"babies with pre existing conditions can now afford to be treated for their conditions" This statement is pure fantasy on your part. Babies are covered only if their mother had health insurance... exactly the same as before ObamaCare.

          Get your Obama phone now!!!

The program is called Lifeline, established in 1984 was originally created to subsidize landline phone service for low income Americans, funded by government-collected telecommunication fees, paid by consumers.

In 2008, the program was expanded to support cell phones which quickly escalated the cost of the program. In 2008 the program cost $772 million, but by 2011 it cost $1.6 billion.

Where do you get the idea that "No public money" is spent on the program?

"Public money" is raised through taxes. If, you have a phone, you pay the tax that funds this program every time you pay your phone bill.

This program is funded with nothing but "public money".

The Federal Communications Commission has a program called Lifeline created in 1984 under Reagan to make basic telecommunications services affordable.

It provides low-cost or free phone service.

Bush extended it to cell phones in 2008.

The agency's website says this is because it and Congress "recognize that telephone service provides a vital link to emergency services, government services and surrounding communities."

Who qualifies varies by state, but "in general," to qualify you must have an income that is no more than 135 percent of the federal poverty line, or be enrolled in assistance programs like Medicaid, public housing assistance, discounted school lunch, or yes, food stamps.

Strictly speaking, it's not a government-funded program: the telephone companies make payments to a fund administered by a non-profit called the Universal Service Administrative Company, but anyone with a phone bill chips in through a surcharge on their service.

Where the hell do you idiots get your news...

            This is Just F*cked Up!!!:

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a recent interview that his “foremost” mission as the head of America’s space exploration agency is to improve relations with the Muslim world.

Though international diplomacy would seem well outside NASA’s orbit, Bolden said in an interview with Al Jazeera that strengthening those ties was among the top tasks President Obama assigned him. He said better interaction with the Muslim world would ultimately advance space travel.

“When I became the NASA administrator — or before I became the NASA administrator — he charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science … and math and engineering,” Bolden said in the interview.

At the beginning of this thing, I actually thought it would be more of a contest. I didn't expect Romney to self-destruct quite so badly.

So I've been trying to figure out where the breakdown happened. I think what it really comes down to is that there is no one running his campaign. There are several people running his campaign, and they all think that their money should give them the lead position.

Adelson says Romney should jump one way, so he does. Then the Koch brothers point him in a different direction and off he goes. Then the right wing base demands still some other path, and he obediently follows their directives. On top of all that, he has Faux Entertainment, Hannity, Limbaugh, and Beck giving orders.

Is it any wonder the campaign is so incoherent? Every one of these people has a gigantic ego that demands first place, so they're all telling him what to do and no one actually asks Mitt.

I still don't know for sure what Mitt Romney believes, or even if he has any convictions. He has been so busy pandering to the big money and the big media, that he has no idea of what or who he really is.

One of the most critical traits of a President is the ability to lead. Romney is a follower, and he follows a variety of masters. It is not something you want to see in someone who aspires to be President.

They are to busy raising money to campaign. The problem with having the majority of your money come from a few people and not allot of people is that if you piss off the few that give you money you are broke. He is to afraid to make the billionaires supporting his campaign angry and that is why he can't appeal to the masses. If he runs on his health care plan, which was a great plan he will lose all his big money. Sad that this man has accomplishments he can't mention as he is supported by those who don't like them.

No hoax... the truth that Obamanistas don't want the voters to know about.

The Lifeline program was for landlines were to access emergency services (e.g. 911) was the original purpose. Morphing it into a free cell phone with 200+ minutes for people who earn 135% of the poverty rate are new under Obama and have more than doubled the cost of the program.

Obama = Tax & Spend without any control.

It couldn't possibly of been extended to cellphones because it's probably cheaper to offer prepaid cellphones then it is to have a phone company have to come out and hook back up your land line is it? Or because land lines are all but extinct? Replaced by digital services and lumped into your tv/internet lines right?

let me correct you bullsh%t - you obviousley know little about Bain capitol. Most of the businesses Bain is involved with sought out Bain because they were on they're last legs and Bain was they're last hope. Second, MOST of the business Bain became involved with - they saved - that would be hundreds of businesses and tens of thousands of jobs - little barry cant say that. Of the businesses they did liquidate they gave the workers severence almost all the time. Romneys generosity goes way beyond his church . He declined to be paid as gov of mass, opting to have his pay put into the states coffers - what a greedy f%ck, he declined pay as chairmen of the olympics, gave more away in charity last year the obama , biden and the clintons COMBINED. Left the state of mass a surplus and nearly full emnployment. obama NEVER endured anything but a syncophant, fawning media that continues to carry ever lie he tells. for the first 2.5 years of his "presidency" obama had the house and the senate - so there was NOTHING obstructing him. Can I clear up anything else for you , son?

Paliban, you got to be kidding!! Obama is the WORST President when it comes to foreign policy and defense. Never in our history has foreign policy failed like it has under Obama. Let's stick to the current sitting President. All you libtards do is attack Romney. Give me a reason for just these three failures of Obama. 1) He said unemployment would fall below 6% once the stimulus passed. It didn't, it failed, he lied. Your excuse? 2) He said there were shovel ready jobs. There were none. He lied. Your excuse? 3) He said he would close GITMO. He didn't, he lied. Your excuse? These are just three of many failures of Obama. All you libtards are knocking Romney when he's NOT the President. Stick to what's happened the past four years with this loser of a President. You want to stick with a guy who is going to run this country to the ground if he gets re-elected? I'm sticking to the facts of what Obama didn't do these past four years when I go to the polls in 5 short weeks. BTW, I've been in the military for 26 years now and this President is the worst I've had the displeasure of serving under. He's a failure as Commander-in-Chief.

                      Martha,

That's precisely what is wrong with your entire political philosophy. You can't articulate a single good reason to vote for the guy you claim to support.

Obama has done a damn good job. He has brought the country back from the brink of financial collapse. He has preserved 1.5 million auto jobs and we have been repaid almost every cent of the bailout money he used to do so. He has added over 5 million private sector jobs in less than four years.

The job losses when he took office were running close to one million every month. That is no longer true.

The GDP was running in the minus column. It is now growing.

Most of the leadership of al Quaida has been droned out of existence and bin Laden is dead. According to you folks, we're not supposed to make nice with Islamic nations, so when we conducted a military exercise in Pakistan to get bin Laden, you criticized the President for making the Pakistanis mad. Which is it? Make up your mind.

You fling terms like socialist and communist around as though they had some validity, but Obama has consistently supported the growth of private sector jobs and has repeatedly cut taxes on small business in order to encourage that growth. It is easy to label the President with whatever pejorative term Limbaugh is using this month, but just because he says it, doesn't make it true. I doubt if there are more than a dozen people in the entire country that actively espouse or support a true socialistic state.

Your problem is that you spend way too much time with Hannity and Limbaugh and you have forgotten how to fact check. These people lie. They lie and lie and lie and lie, and because they say it so many times you think it's true. You need to educate yourself, because right now, you just look ignorant and biased.

                      Scientology?

Both avoid taxes - which is the key objective for both cults / pseudo-religions.

Both worship $ as the almighty.

Both believe they came from other planets - "out there" (K

Both stick together like a cult.

Both groups "tithe 10% (or more) + from followers" to eventually receive
"kick-backs" from their religions / cults. Hence- "avoiding taxes".

Please tell me where I am "wrong" putting these two cults together?

beachbum- I like you admire Ms. Albright, here's a little bit of a correction about the Mormon "Church" if you don't mind? Many people believe the Mormon "church"is a cult, and I would agree with you having been raised in that "religion",fortunatley I came to my senses at a young age! However there are laws that prevent just any old "cult" from claiming tax exemption, they must be an "organized church", and this is the case with the Mormons, unfortunatley. The mormon church does collect "tithing"at a rate of 10% monthly from their members, but the members DO NOT EVER SEE A DIME OF IT BACK, it is "supposedly"used to fund their "welfare and charity"work. Which is not REALLY WELFARE and NOT REALLY CHARITY, so called "welfare" recipients are required to "work for the church"to continue to recieve aid, and their so called charitable work? Their MISSIONARIES show up at THESE people's door two weeks later,to TEACH THE GOSPEL to these poor unsuspecting people, hope this was helpful! Have a good evening.

I'm not worried either, I think Romney will do OK, but some great game changer, not worried about that, he says one thing and in a matter an hour the campaign will walk it back, he doesn't really think that. This campaign has been a circus just like the whole Republican primary's, only two clowns in the Kar, but they are still clowns.

And President Obama just has to tell the truth of how hard it has been to get anything done with the party of NO, blocking, obstructing and filibustering!

Because that's all Romney has to run on. His business experience. And research will tell you that the type of business he ran is not the type of business that might show he can run a country.

The US government is not a business, and cannot be run like one. The country does not run with all eyes on the 'bottom line'. And to be honest, Congress is most responsible for domestic policy. A President can suggest, propose bills, and try to cajole a compromise, but in the end only Congress can enact laws or pass a budget. Congressmen/women add all sorts of crap to bills. It's a complicated process that could really benefit from a 'no-riders' ban.

However, foreign policy is the President's responsibility. And Romney not only has no experience he picked a VP that doesn't either. His advisors are the same old Bush crowd so without more information from Romney it's to be assumed that's what we would get.

When running in 2008 Obama had no foreign policy experience either but he picked Biden, who, no matter what you may think, has extensive experience. That's what a VP pick is supposed to do, plug the holes the Presdential candidate is lacking.

And not only that Romney has professed many stances that go against his party platform, only to have his campaign come back later and say 'well, he really didn't mean that'. Obamacare and abortions come to mind. This tells me that Romney isn't his own man. He is a puppet. It's sad really, I think he really is a moderate and left to run on his true beliefs he might have made an ok President. But he sold his soul (just like McCain, who I was actually thinking of voting for). I vote for the person because I can see what he/she stands for. What their policies will be. I do not vote for a hidden committee and that's exactly what Romney has. I do not want a bunch of unelected cronies running the country again.

They definitely are NOT influencial anymore. Their words mean nothing to me or anyone else. We as a country are in the worst condition we've ever been in and there is no leadership from Obama, just finger pointing. We have a President who makes excuses and failed miserably, yet we still have people saying he's doing a good job. Think things are bad now, what until Obama gets re-elected, the worse is yet to come.

Albright is well-liked on the international scene. Clinton and Carter are and have been very influencial on the international scene and are also well-respected.

Just because you have blinders on doesn't mean that everyone does. These people know far, far more about politics, international issues than either you or I or just about anyone else. They are the 'experts'.

Kind of like trusting your doctor or car mechanic. If you are smart enough to realize that somebody knows more than you, you are smart enough to at least listen and take their judgment into account.

But then the first step would be to acknowledge that you don't know everything and that the pundits on Fox and right-wing talk radio are playing you for a fool just to enhance their own wealth.

Romney was chosen because he had the most money (a sad but true fact of American politics). He has no charisma and can't connect with Republican voters. And exactly what proof do you have to say this? None. You simply don't like him, most probably resent the fact that he is black so you make up crap to justify your stance. This doesn't make you a 'low information' voter, it makes you even worse than a 'no information' voter. It makes you a weak-minded person who is afraid to actually look at facts and are willing to be lead by the nose by those who are more interested in power than our country.

I don't mind when someone actually votes for Romney based on investigation and research of facts. When they truly believe that he has a vision and solutions. see kevy - while Bush made those statements - the operations were already underway. little obama initiated NOTHING - he just happened to be sitting in the whitehouse when Bushes operations finally paid off . Starting to understand now?

actuslly kevy - 11 years isnt that long a stretch - bin laden was a multi billionaire - that means he had mucho reasources. He hid out in a part of the world we have little presence in and was aided by the governments of these countries. So 11 years was actually pretty quick - Im trying an experimnet and trying to explain it to you like an adult instead of talking down to you like a slow child - lets see if it helps you

they have NO respect for obama in the middle east - they reguard him as exactly what he is - a weak , pandering boob

You're wrong. The President has done a lot to regain the respect Bush lost us. Where do you live? Do you work or travel overseas? I doubt it judging by your statement. My husband works in the Middle East. We travel all over the world and have for years. This President is SO much better you can't imagine.

Again, I say do some research and stop spouting talking points. You obviously have no real knowledge.

Im pretty well traveled myself - the "hatred" of Bush was always very exaggerated. As for obama being respected in the middle east - you really have got to be kidding. My suggestion - and not trying to being a smart alec - tune in to some of the international news - bbc, der spiegel and such - all available on line -and you will see - most of the world now doesnt take obama seriously - of all people - sarkosy referred to obama as a "prancing arrogant child" Foriegn news will give you a look at the opinion of obama in the middle east - lots of obamas burned in effigy - whats going on over there now is not just a coincidence - America has lost its stature thanks to obama - what ever you want to say about Bush - they thought twice about trifling with us with Bush in office - clinton too for that matter. you wont find much about this in the sanitized , obama friendly media in this country

This lady is such a biased jerk! She doesn't know depth in a person if it were right on her nose. Mitt Romney has more depth than she could ever imagine! What in the heck is wrong with her, anyway? She needs to clean out her ears and listen better.

But of course, Albright is such a good reader of character in the first instance. Recall Bill Clinton's entire cabinet meeting the press outside the White House during the Monica Lewinsky affair and one by one, starting with Madeleine Albright, pronouncing "I believe that the allegations are completely untrue"

After that, one's judgement and credibility is pretty much shot.

"It takes a while to know what all the facts are. So I believe that the administration is telling us what they know and they are being very careful not to get ahead of the whole investigative process," she said. "We also support the president's re-election because we want a chief executive who actually understands foreign policy." - Madeline Albright
