DUBLIN, OH – Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said her impression after attending a recent Mitt Romney speech is that "there's just nothing going on" with the Republican presidential nominee. She said his understanding of foreign policy not only lacks depth but diminishes U.S. standing abroad.
Fmr. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright joins Morning Joe to discuss the lingering war in Afghanistan, Romney's criticism of President Obama's foreign policy record, the latest in Syria and why Romney didn't mention Afghanistan in his RNC speech.
"He is so two-dimensional. I mean, up close and personal, there's just nothing going on," she said.
Speaking at a Women for Obama rally here just outside of Columbus, OH on Sunday, Albright told the crowd that she had recently been on hand when Romney delivered his address at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York.
"It's the sense that I've had throughout the campaign that it's unclear what [Romney] really believes in," Albright told reporters after the event. "I think when you contrast him with President Obama, who also gave a speech later there, and President Clinton, who spoke several times there, there is not, kind of, a sense of depth."
Albright also mentioned the video of Romney suggesting that 47 percent of Americans view themselves as victims, arguing that the comments "diminish us in many different ways" and that the former Massachusetts governor's rhetoric sounds like he wants to start another war.
Albright, who in 1996 was appointed by President Bill Clinton to become the first female secretary of state, has been an active surrogate for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign. She has traveled to swing states across the country, often reaching out to women voters. Sunday's event came just two days before Ohio begins early voting -- and while she did mention women's issues -- most of her speech was aimed at discrediting Romney's foreign policy views.
While speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative, GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney offered his take on why current US foreign aid practices are generally ineffective, saying that building a strong nation through free enterprise is the best assistance America can provide to developing and impoverished nations.
The former top diplomat also defended the Obama administration’s handling of the recent attack on a U.S. Consulate in Libya, telling reporters, "I think they said what they knew, when they knew it."
The attack, which U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice originally said was spontaneous, has since been deemed by the administration as a coordinated and planned effort. The Romney campaign pounced on what they described as mixed messages.
White House senior adviser David Plouffe said on NBC's "Meet The Press" that it was not initially clear if the attack in Benghazi was an act of terror, while Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod said on CNN's "State of the Union" that, "The president called it an act of terror the day after it happened."
“The Obama White House and the Obama campaign can’t seem to get their stories straight on the attack on our consulate in Libya,” Romney spokesperson Ryan Williams said in press release.
“These inconsistencies raise even more questions about the confusion and mixed messages that have marked the White House’s response from the very beginning.”
Albright accused Republicans of politicizing the death of four Americans.
"It takes a while to know what all the facts are. So I believe that the administration is telling us what they know and they are being very careful not to get ahead of the whole investigative process," she said. "We also support the president's re-election because we want a chief executive who actually understands foreign policy."

One thing you can be sure of in the debates: Romney won't say what policies he would implement, because if he did he would frighten the country to death. The gutting of the middle class that Ryan and the Tea Party advocate will cut the meager safety net out from under the poor and disenfranchised. The "cure" for Medicare they they've floated is nothing more than a giant payoff to Big Insurance. The "adjustment" to Social Security is a payoff to Wall Street. Romney/Ryan plan nothing more than to enrich the already very rich. Adoption of Ryan's tax plan would have Romney pay 1% federal income tax on his annual $20 million income.
To not vote Obama requires a better, viable alternative. Romney/Ryan isn't it.

I can't ever put anyone in a"bucket" and call them the name of the bucket ... i.e., republicans, green eyes, blue skin, etc. We have to do our own research and investigate what those that we vote for stand for. In my line of work, I deal with clinicians who deal with judges who make or break calls on the lives of children. I don't give a rat's butt about their party affiliation. I do pay attention to how they judge.
People forget that their votes matter SO much on the local level. Research your judges and if you do not like the way they vote, well, guess what ... you have POWER! You have a VOTE! Make it COUNT!'

7) Obama then jokes when confronted with the failure of the "stimulus" that the "shovel-ready" jobs were not "shovel ready"? THAT is depth?
8) We now have nearly 1 in 7 on Food Stamps, 1 in 6 in Poverty, the lowest labor participation rate since the 70's, AND the highest percent unemployed more than 6 months or more since the Great Depression. And Obama doesn't even care?? What kind of depth is that?

These comments are made by former SOS Albright- the SOS whom had glowing reviews of North Korea and China because they threw her lavish parties (heavily supressing their own people while building up their militaries and building nuclear weapons, while threatening their neighbors [Japan, S. Korea, Hong Kong], while demanding money/nuclear technology from the US- which they GOT from the Clinton administration). She's not a good reference point.
If I wanted a good review from her I'd buy her lunch in a nice resturant before I asked the questions. Bet that's all it would take.

What he hasn't realized is that POTUS represents all of America. Although salesmanship is large part of the job description, empathy is also required. Apparently you don't read newspapers or follow the news, or you'd be aware that Obama a) had done more towards thwarting Iran's nuclear weapons ambitions than did his predecessor, George W., b) forcefully involved the U.S. in the NATO air support of the Libyan revolt, and c) has certainly been involved diplomatically in the Syrian Civil War.
That was an intentional act by the White House, in response to Netayahu's recent policy statements on Iran. This is an example of foreign policy in action, not a question of scheduling.
Civics & U.S. Government 101: Bills are proposed and written in Congress, voted upon, and then signed [or not] by the President. I have no idea why you assume he did not read it, but such all legislation is written by congress.
I'll give you that one. I do not like this legislation either. But it is plain that something needed to be done. We currently spend a significantly higher amount, both per capita, and as a percentage of our GNP, than any nation in Western Europe, and our costs are rising faster. Where were the Republicans and Bush in the preceding 8 years?
You quote fragments of statements out of context. But Obama's is right that anyone's success in building a business is dependent on the strength of the infrastructure of their society. Without education, public road ways, and countless other government services, how would any business become established, let alone prosper?
He did not demand any such thing, he advocated and lobbied for it. Moreover, much of the stimulus spending conservatives complain of was implemented by the prior administration. Yes, unemployment did rise above 8%, and actually peaked above 10%. My question for you would be, how much higher would unemployment have risen if our government had not used deficit spending to stimulate the economy? Look at Britain, which chose government austerity. How well are they doing?
Again, context. Obama was being questioned as a part of the Jobs Council. The question was asked about complications faced in seeking to put Americans back to work and responded, "Shovel ready, was not as shovel-ready as we expected". He is plainly making a joke, but at his own expense, and showing candor and honesty. How does this lack depth of character or perception?
Why do you assume he does not care? On what are you basing your assessment of his attitudes? Your statement regarding the depth of the economic issues facing this country is spot on.
