I have a question for Mitt Romney: why can't you show me your tax returns, aren't you proud of your personal dealings, you tout your experience as a businessman, you claim you have the answers to restructure the tax code, you want the trust of the voters, and yet you do not trust the electorate to view your taxes. Do you understand how this creates a huge credibility gap for you.

Lawrence Odonell says he'd ask "have you ever received amnesty for any IRS violation. In 2009 the US had an agreement with the Swiss to reveal the names of US citizens w/ accounts there. Our gov't offered amnesty to any who would come forward and pay back taxes due before prosecution. Think about it. If Mitt offered up any years besides 10 & 11, he'd have to include 09 or explain why it was not included among 5 or 10 or 3! If the answer to Lawrence's question could reveal a felony and a felony granted amnesty is still a felony committed. It would explain the absolute refusal even faced w/ defeat.

Former president George W. Bush isn’t exactly doing Mitt Romney any favors on the messaging front. As the current face of the Republican party, Mitt’s single biggest challenge has been distancing himself from his image as a business tycoon who got rich by outsourcing American jobs and then keeping big chunks of his fortune in Swiss bank accounts and invested in the Cayman Islands.

On election week, George W. will rub the sketchy Cayman Islands playboy image right in Mitt’s face.

BuzzFeed points out that W. will give the keynote address to the Cayman Islands Alternative Investment Summit, which goes down on Grand Cayman Island November 1-2, less than a week before the presidential election. The other keynote speaker will be the UK’s most famous billionaire playboy, Virgin’s Richard Branson, who owns his very own island not so far from Grand Cayman.

The Summit’s site says the event “will bring together the world’s leading institutional investors, fund managers, academics, economists and regulators in the Cayman Islands—the world’s leading domicile for investment funds—to discuss and debate the fundamentals of a vibrant future for the alternative investments industry.”

To most Americans, this is a pretty simple equation: “Cayman Islands” + “alternative investments” = “sketchy.”

George W’s Cayman keynote is just the latest in a long string of reminders about Romney’s ultra-rich status and possibly sketchy behavior— and he’s not getting a lot of help from the people around him.

Just last week former GOP candidate Tim Pawlenty left Rommey’s campaign in a high-profile departure to become a lobbyist for the banking industry, and promptly said that banks should just be allowed to regulate themselves. Last week Romney released his 2011 tax returns which showed him paying a 14% tax rate, and if the hackers who claim to have stolen his earlier records weren’t bluffing and haven’t been paid a ransom, they may release even more of Romney’s returns tomorrow.

Accidental or not, somehow the messaging around Mitt’s millions seem to be the most consistent the GOP is able to construct around Romney.

Forrest - I think President Obama should walk up to the lectern on Wed., throw down 10 years worth of his tax returns and then ask Mitt, "here's mine, how about yours?"

Wow...what a big moment that would be for a United States President...to bring his tax returns to a debate. Maybe instead he can bring the details of his 2009 plan to cut the national debt in half. And if he cannot find the napkin that he wrote that debt-reduction plan on, maybe he can find the post-it note where he jotted down his guarantee that unemployment would be at 5.5 percent by the summer of 2012.

    Forrest,

That is the most salient question to be asked. I do hope the moderators bring it up. After all Myth may be a felon. Certainly, the electracte cannot not appreciate a felon in the White House.

Lawrence O’Donnell brought up an IRS amnesty program regarding foreign bank accounts, and asked if Romney was involved in the program and didn’t report it, if it means he has committed a felony. Tax attorney Jeremy Temkin said it would have to be demonstrated that it was not done “willfully,” and the government would have to prove that one knew they had “an obligation to report” in that instance.

The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein said that if it came out that Romney was involved in such a program, it would certainly hurt him politically. He admitted that the news is presuming innocence and acting uncomfortable calling Romney out before any information is released, but said Romney essentially invited the scrutiny on himself through his campaign’s lack of transparency.

That is the problem. Why would anyone want to assume MYTH innocent with so much hanging in the balance; such as the economy; jobs, sequestration, affirmative action, voters rights, and the Supreme Court?

@ Vermont Girl, that would be awesome.

@ Bev, I don't know if he is a felon or not, I think probably he followed the letter of the law in taking advantage of all loopholes for dancing horses and such, (while complaining about people who do not earn enough to pay income tax but pay many other taxes), perhaps he did take advantage of an amnesty offer. The one thing I know for sure is that Romney and his campaign is utterly convinced that whatever is in his tax returns is politically devastating for him, otherwise he would release them. When somebody basically "takes the fifth" you know it is not good, there is definitely something there that Romney feels he can not let the electorate see and still remain a candidate. This tax business will play a larger part in Romney's defeat than republicans are willing to admit, it is damn shady and everyone knows it.

      #2.6 - Mon Oct 1, 2012 1:13 PM EDT

The hilarious thing about the hackers tax returns is that by putting something out there, whether they are real or are fake, they will again put the focus on Romney's tax returns.

If they are fake, the only way Romney will be able to prove that is by releasing the real returns.

If they are real, then not only will Romney have to deal with his real returns being out there, but he'll also have to deal with questions about how he deals with security issues.

The entire thing is a real problem for Mitt Romney. By deciding that he does not want to release his tax returns, he opened himself up for more issues than he could possibly want.

You know what else is funny dirp, republicans booed Romney in the primaries when he said he would not release them, now they are silent on that matter, if the shoe was on the other foot and Obama said he would not release his taxes they would howling and we all know it.

        #2.8 - Mon Oct 1, 2012 1:39 PM EDT

So the decision is then based on the availability of one candidate's tax returns... versus the availability of enough facts shown over four years to aver that the other candidate has no idea on how to bring back economic growth or curb the debt.

I could not care less what either candidate's tax returns show...if either was ever in trouble with the IRS we would surely know about it. And I'm certain there's no financials secrets to be found in Mr. Obama's tax returns from when he was a community organizer or college lecturer.

Oh no Tony not just one thing, there are lots of reasons why I would not cast my vote for Romney, that is just a question I would like to ask him. It is a serious issue for me because it goes to the heart of his trustworthiness, and it does not jive with his portrayal as an honest businessman and "job creator", also since he seems to have such disdain for 47% of the population that does not earn enough to owe federal taxes I would like to see just how much he paid as a percentage of his income, and what loopholes he used to pay less than half the rate I do.

Forrest - How you doing today? Good I hope. I think you on the left are to hung up on Romney's tax returns. There are many more serious issues and questions than tax returns. Those on the left will continue to try and use the tax returns as a deflection from Obama's failures as a President because of his lack of LEADERSHIP and his over over sized ego.

What kind of a President would continue on to a campaign stop in Las Vegas after being informed that an American Ambassador and 3 others were just killed by terrorists? What kind of President calls the killing of an American Ambassador and others a "bump in the road"?

We now know that the Obama administration knew this was a planned terrorist attack within 24 hours after the attack and yet they continued to try and cover it up by using the stupid anti-Muslim video.

            Have a good day Forrest.

Hello Sarge, I'm doing fine and hope you are doing fine as well. The tax return situation is a political loser for Romney Sarge, it reinforces a lot of the negatives people feel about him, it undermines his credibility, it may not be an issue for you, but it is for many, it is one of the factors that prevent Romney from gaining any traction, people just don't take to this guy, and his taking the fifth on his taxes does not help him one bit. Have a great evening Sargent.

Repubs have short memories. Reagan increased the deficit 188%. George W. more than 100%. Obama less than 50%. If you attribute current spending on Iraq and Afghanistan to Bush, which is only fair, then Obama has increased the deficit even less. Two past presidents (both Republican) are responsible for more than half the deficit this country has built up over 236 years!

But no matter how hard you try, you can't get them to admit that they are wrong. Tax cuts for the wealthy have never been directly reponsible for creating jobs. Bush is the poster boy for that philosophy. And the GOP keeps trying the same losing strategies, at America's expense. Ask yourself, "who is really benefitting?" Why are so many wealthy people behind the Republican Party? They don't really care about America. They care about their money.

Putting money in the hands of everyday consumers will always create jobs. But where are those jobs? If you're spending at Wal-Mart, those jobs are in China. And you can bet that Mutt Rob-Me and all his wealthy buddies have big investments there.

If you take it further and point out we were running under Bush's budget through October, 2009 and that the 300 billion a year unfunded for Bush's drug plan is something Obama has added to his deficit every year Bush has plenty to be blamed for. He never funded anything as president, wars, his drug plan and his 400 billion a year tax cuts all unfunded and republicans won't allow to expire. Also note that Ryan voted for all these unfunded expenses. I guess he's only concerned with the deficit when a democrats president.

Actually, the President has proposed budgets in every fiscal year. The Republican House and filibuster GOP Senate of NO has just failed to enact them. Instead the House has proposed to eliminate Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid and the VA and the EPA, and Dept. of Education and just about everything except the Department of Defense and Energy, those give $$$ to the GOP supporters.

                    dirp...

How about an actual fact now and then. Mr. Obama has NOT been able a get a single Democrat to cast a 'yes' vote on the budgets he has submitted. "Budgets" don't get 'enacted'...they are voted on. Our pouty president has failed to produce a 'yes' vote from anyone....how is that the House's fault ???

Oh yeah...and on top of your fantasy list of items the House wants to supposedly "eliminate"...they also want to do away with 'Monday Night Football', 'Google', four door sedans, three-legged races, and any and all recipes that call for the use of marjoram.

I'm sure you simply forgot about those items.

Say NineBallPro, if you are old enough to remember Reagen you may be old enough to remember a Nine Ball player by the name of Louie Roberts, they called him "St. Louis Louie". Back in the day Meucci produced a signature cue stick named after him, he was the greatest Nine Ball player I have ever seen, bar none. Louie won the world Nine Ball World Championship in Rockford Ill, in the early 80's, I can tell you for a fact he won the side games where the big money flows. When I was a young man, before I got married, I had this idea that I was going to make a living with my cue stick, many years ago St. Louis Louie came into the poolroom in my town where I was considered a very strong player, and forever cured me of that notion. Sorry this post was not a bit political, but your moniker brought back a lot of old memories, and I still love that game.

I didn't know "St. Louis Louie". But I appreciate the roll down memory lane. There were and still are a lot of great players. I never made a living at the game, but I did supplement my income a bit.

i dont know, perhaps a fledging economy, high unemployment, decreasing GDP might take a bit of a priority. Obama's platform is anyone making 250K is rich, tax them!

Watching HLN and they explained (crappily) Romney's plan and how it would add 200Billion to the debt however the only touch on Obama's plan was he wants to tax the rich, which are people who make 250k or more a year. BRILLIANT. what a bunch of hacks the left wing media is.

                      White House Hack Attack

Chinese hackers break in to White House military office network in charge of the president’s nuclear football

                      AP

                      BY:
                      September 30, 2012 8:33 pm

Hackers linked to China’s government broke into one of the U.S. government’s most sensitive computer networks, breaching a system used by the White House Military Office for nuclear commands, according to defense and intelligence officials familiar with the incident.

One official said the cyber breach was one of Beijing’s most brazen cyber attacks against the United States and highlights a failure of the Obama administration to press China on its persistent cyber attacks.

Disclosure of the cyber attack also comes amid heightened tensions in Asia, as the Pentagon moved two U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups and Marine amphibious units near waters by Japan’s Senkaku islands.

China and Japan—the United States’ closest ally in Asia and a defense treaty partner—are locked in a heated maritime dispute over the Senkakus, which China claims as its territory.

U.S. officials familiar with reports of the White House hacking incident said it took place earlier this month and involved unidentified hackers, believed to have used computer servers in China, who accessed the computer network used by the White House Military Office (WHMO), the president’s military office in charge of some of the government’s most sensitive communications, including strategic nuclear commands. The office also arranges presidential communications and travel, and inter-government teleconferences involving senior policy and intelligence officials.

“This is the most sensitive office in the U.S. government,” said a former senior U.S. intelligence official familiar with the work of the office. “A compromise there would cause grave strategic damage to the United States.”

Security officials are investigating the breach and have not yet determined the damage that may have been caused by the hacking incident, the officials said.

One defense official said there is fairly solid intelligence linking the penetration of the WHMO network to China, and there are indications that the attackers were able to breach the classified network.

Details of the cyber attack and the potential damage it may have caused remain closely held within the U.S. government.

However, because the military office handles strategic nuclear and presidential communications, officials said the attack was likely the work of Chinese military cyber warfare specialists under the direction of a unit called the 4th Department of General Staff of the People’s Liberation Army, or 4PLA.

It is not clear how such a high-security network could be penetrated. Such classified computer systems are protected by multiple levels of security and are among the most “hardened” systems against digital attack.

However, classified computer systems were compromised in the past using several methods. They include the insertion of malicious code through a contaminated compact flash drive; a breach by a trusted insider, as in the case of the thousands of classified documents leaked to the anti-secrecy web site Wikileaks; and through compromised security encryption used for remote access to secured networks, as occurred with the recent compromise involving the security firm RSA and several major defense contractors.

According to the former official, the secrets held within the WHMO include data on the so-called “nuclear football,” the nuclear command and control suitcase used by the president to be in constant communication with strategic nuclear forces commanders for launching nuclear missiles or bombers.

The office also is in charge of sensitive continuity-of-government operations in wartime or crises.

The former official said if China were to obtain details of this sensitive information, it could use it during a future conflict to intercept presidential communications, locate the president for targeting purposes, or disrupt strategic command and control by the president to U.S. forces in both the United States and abroad.

White House spokesmen had no immediate comment on the cyber attack, or on whether President Obama was notified of the incident.

Former McAffee cyber threat researcher Dmitri Alperovitch said he was unaware of the incident, but noted: “I can tell you that the Chinese have an aggressive goal to infiltrate all levels of U.S. government and private sector networks.”

“The White House network would be the crown jewel of that campaign so it is hardly surprising that they would try their hardest to compromise it,” said Alperovictch, now with the firm Crowdstrike.

Last week the senior intelligence officer for the U.S. Cyber Command said Chinese cyber attacks and cyber-espionage against Pentagon computers are a constant security problem.

“Their level of effort against the Department of Defense is constant” and efforts to steal economic secrets are increasing, Rear Adm. Samuel Cox, Cyber Command director of intelligence, told Reuters after a security conference.

“It’s continuing apace,” Cox said of Chinese cyber-espionage. “In fact, I’d say it’s still accelerating.”

Asked if classified networks were penetrated by the Chinese cyber warriors, Cox told the news agency: “I can’t really get into that.”

The WHMO arranges the president’s travel and also provides medical support and emergency medical services, according to the White House’swebsite.

“The office oversees policy related to WHMO functions and Department of Defense assets and ensures that White House requirements are met with the highest standards of quality,” the website states. “The WHMO director oversees all military operations aboard Air Force One on presidential missions worldwide. The deputy director of the White House Military Office focuses primarily on the day-to-day support of the WHMO.”

The office is also in charge of the White House Communications Agency, which handles all presidential telephone, radio, and digital communications, as well as airlift operations through both fixed-wing and helicopter aircraft.

It also operates the presidential retreat at Camp David and the White House Transportation Agency.

“To assure proper coordination and integration, the WHMO also includes support elements such as operations; policy, plans, and requirements; administration, information resource management; financial management and comptroller; WHMO counsel; and security,” the website states.

“Together, WHMO entities provide essential service to the president and help maintain the continuity of the presidency.”

Asked for comment on the White House military office cyber attack, a Cyber Command spokesman referred questions to the White House.

Regarding U.S. naval deployments near China, the carrier strike groups led by the USS George Washington and the USS Stennis, along with a Marine Corps air-ground task force, are now operating in the western Pacific near the Senkakus, according to Navy officials.

China recently moved maritime patrol boats into waters near the Senkakus, prompting calls by Japanese coast guard ships for the vessels to leave.

Chinese officials have issued threatening pronouncements to Japan that Tokyo must back down from the recent government purchase of three of the islands from private Japanese owners.

Tokyo officials have said Japan is adamant the islands are Japanese territory.

Officials said the Washington is deployed in the East China Sea and the Stennis is in the South China Sea.

About 2,200 Marines are deployed in the Philippine Sea on the USS Bonhomme Richard and two escorts.

The U.S. Pacific Command said the deployments are for training missions and carriers are not necessarily related to the Senkaku tensions.

“These operations are not tied to any specific event,” said Capt. Darryn James, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Command in Honolulu, according to Time magazine. “As part of the U.S. commitment to regional security, two of the Navy’s 11 global force carrier strike groups are operating in the Western Pacific to help safeguard stability and peace.”

As a measure of the tensions, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Chinese military leaders during his recent visit to China that the U.S. military will abide by its defense commitments to Japan despite remaining publicly neutral in the maritime dispute.

“It’s well known that the United States and Japan have a mutual defense treaty,” a defense official said of Panetta’s exchange in Beijing. “Panetta noted the treaty but strongly emphasized that the United States takes no position on this territorial dispute and encouraged the parties to resolve the dispute peacefully. This shouldn’t have to get to the point where people start invoking treaties.”

A report by the defense contractor Northrop Grumman made public by the congressional U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission in March stated that China’s military has made targeting of U.S. command and control networks in cyber warfare a priority.

“Chinese capabilities in computer network operations have advanced sufficiently to pose genuine risk to U.S. military operations in the event of a conflict,” the report said.

“PLA analysts consistently identify logistics and C4ISR infrastructure as U.S. strategic centers of gravity suggesting that PLA commanders will almost certainly attempt to target these system with both electronic countermeasures weapons and network attack and exploitation tools, likely in advance of actual combat to delay U.S. entry or degrade capabilities in a conflict,” the report said.

C4ISR is military jargon for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

Little is known within the U.S. intelligence community about Chinese strategic cyber warfare programs.

However, recent military writings have disclosed some aspects of the program, which is believed to be one of Beijing’s most closely guarded military secrets, along with satellite weapons, laser arms, and other high-technology military capabilities, such as the DF-21 ballistic missile modified to attack aircraft carriers at sea.

A Chinese military paper from March stated that China is seeking “cyber dominance” as part of its efforts to build up revolutionary military capabilities.

“In peacetime, the cyber combat elements may remain in a ‘dormant’ state; in wartime, they may be activated to harass and attack the network command, management, communications, and intelligence systems of the other countries’ armed forces,” wrote Liu Wangxin in the official newspaper of the Chinese military on March 6.

“While great importance is attached continuously to wartime actions, it is also necessary to pay special attention to non-wartime actions,” he said. “For example, demonstrate the presence of the cyber military power through cyber reconnaissance, cyber deployment, and cyber protection activities.”

Reality check. US policies, particularly GOP policies, have consistently encouraged American businesses to build plants in China by giving them tax breaks, etc. Those same policies reward outsourcing jobs to China. Seems counterproductive to economically support China by exporting jobs and building US manufacturing plants there while complaining that China seeks dominance.

The Obama administration has filed eight (8) specific law suits against China for unfair trade practices and the result has been returning tire manufacturing, solar panels, steel and several others back to the US. That's more than Bush did in his two terms.

You say Obama's doing and saying nothing then list lots of things he's having done. Deploying ships and troops is doing something. As for our cyber security no president discusses the details. It's secret. Maybe if Romney's elected he'll bring you in for security briefings so you won't feel left out.

How much money did the US have to borrow from China to cover the budget short-fall
caused by Romney's "legal" tax avoidance schemas in his personal finances
and the taxes not paid by Bain and the Bain partners?

Was one of the reasons that President Obama was against the Republican war against Iraq was because he knew it would eliminate the major opposition state to Iran in the Middle East?

By neutralizing Iraq, Iran has become the major military power in the Middle East with no counterbalance.

That's clearly why Bush senior didn't take out Saddam when he could have had the troops there in a few days. He always was the smart Bush. Obama may have considered this as well as not invading another country on mere suspicion. Now we have the 2 Shiite majority countries that have been the most aggressive in the past friendly to each other instead of offsetting each other.

I have a questiion for Governor Romney.... When are you going to show us more tax returns. You claim to be able to handle money and, as your own father pointed out, one or two years may be a fluke. So when will you show them, sir?

The LAST thing Mitt Robme wants anybody to know about him is how he cheats on his taxes.

Besides, why would Romney want to take a chance on being indicted on felony charges of lying to the IRS?

All I care about is that Romney/Ryan financial plans for the country do not add up. Trickle down economics does not work. They have shown no other reason to be in office. I am a traditional conservative but not a financial one. I guess I have decided.

It is a clear fact that the YouTube video ignited spontaneous demonstrations in
all Muslim countries including Libya. Libya was never spared from the anti-YouTube
video demonstrations witnessed in all Muslim countries including Indonesia.

Republicans must therefore not be allowed to mislead the public that similar
spontaneous demonstrations witnessed in all Muslim countries never occurred in Libya.

In Libya, the spontaneous anti-YouTube video demonstrations provided a good
opportunity for bad people who had been longing for such opportunity to arise to terrorize American Embassy. These ill-minded people took advantage of the spontaneous demonstrations to attack our Embassy with weapons left behind in the streets of Libya as a result of the just ended war against
                                Gadhafi.

Question-- Did spontaneous demonstrations against the YouTube video witnessed in Egypt and all
other Muslim countries occur also in Libya?

                                Answer--- Yes

Question---Can we believe Republicans when they insist that similar demonstrations against the YouTube video
witnessed in all Muslim countries never occurred in Libya.

Answer-- No. Muslims in Libya just like Muslims in all other Muslim countries demonstrated
against the YouTube video but the Libyan demonstrations were hijacked by
ill-minded people who had all along been longing for an opportunity like that
to occur. They took advantage of the demonstrations by mingling with the rest
of demonstrators to attack the USA Embassy with heavy weapons left behind in
the streets as a result of the just ended war.

i would like to ask Romney for his guest list to the $50,000.00/plate dinner when he claimed the 47% .... as not one person in that room stood up to defend our seniors, our veterans and our hardworking middle-class .... very sad, did they "all" considered this group bums and moochers .... especially when romney is draft dodger and none of his sons have enlisted ? did none of guests have grandparents, or a struggling veteran or some middle class hardworking family members ? Come on .... why didn't anyone step up to him ???? i would really like to know the reasoning ..... who were they ??????
