Santorum: Back Todd Akin in Missouri, despite abortion flap, if GOP wants to take Senate

BARNESVILLE, Ohio -- Rick Santorum on Saturday said the entire Republican Party should voice its support for Senate candidate Todd Akin of Missouri -- including the top of the party's presidential ticket.

After holding a rally for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney here in the heart of Ohio's coal country, Santorum told NBC News that an Akin victory is essential for the GOP to regain control of the Senate and repeal President Barack Obama's health care law. The only way for that to happen, Santorum said, is for the GOP establishment to give the embattled Akin its full-fledged support.

"The entire Republican Party should stand up and say, 'You know what? He's our candidate, it's too important for the future of our country not to have a majority of the Senate in this upcoming election," Santorum said when asked if Romney needs to publicly support Akin. "I'm hoping everybody will join in and support the cause."

The former Pennsylvania senator and unsuccessful president candidate joined South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint in announcing their support of Akin on Wednesday.

"I don't know what the Republican establishment -- what their objective is, but if they want to repeal Obamacare, we better hold the Senate. And to hold the Senate, we better win Missouri," Santorum said.

Akin has taken heat from both sides of the aisle after using the term "legitimate rape" and saying women have a biological way of preventing unwanted pregnancies while he gave a now-notorious explanation of his views on abortion.

"My feeling is that we can win the presidency, but if we don't have 51 senators, we're not going to be able to repeal Obamacare," said Santorum.

Romney's former rival has been active campaigning for the presidential candidate in the Buckeye State. It's a primary Santorum nearly won on Super Tuesday, and his support was particularly strong in this part of the state, heavy with blue-collar workers and not far from his home of Pittsburgh.

Despite recent polls showing Romney needing to make up significant ground in Ohio, the former senator remained optimistic about the state turning red. "I'm confident that Mitt Romney will win Ohio, will when the presidency," he said. "People here understand how dangerous this president is."

That danger, Santorum said, stems from the president's energy policy, which he claims makes the U.S. more dependent on foreign oil. It is a message the Romney campaign hopes will resonate in this coal-rich part of the state.  It is here where Republicans go to hammer Obama for waging a "war on coal."

"This is a president that is going to drive this country to economic ruin because of a phony ideology that, you know, somehow or another he has to control the seas rising and falling," Santorum said.

While Santorum has been traveling as a Romney surrogate, he also has been holding events in places like Iowa independent of the presidential race. It has fueled speculation that he could be eyeing another run.

Asked about his political future, Santorum would only say that he will be happy in 2016 to continue his work as a Romney surrogate. "I'll be happy to come back and campaign for Gov. Romney in four years," he said.

Republicans are the biggest threat to the future and security of this country. I'm not sure what the Christian equivalent is to Sharia Law, but the Republicans are writing a bill for it right now. Akin is scum, Santorum is opportunistic bible beating scum, and Romney is an empty suit already bought and paid for by the corrupt wealthy elites + Grover Norquist. Our country cannot afford to keep Republicans in office!

Rick Sanitorium has always agreed with Todd in every way and is not about to back down now. The key here is control over women. Then you get to tell them how to vote along with how to control their own bodies. Men like Rick and Todd want women to worry about nothing. Just let the men in you life, and that includes all the men in the republican Congress, make all of your decisions for you.

"My feeling is that we can win the presidency, but if we don't have 51 senators, we're not going to be able to repeal Obamacare," said Santorum

This fricken IDIOT wanted to be president and doesn't know if you win the presidency all you need is 50 Senators since the vice president is the President of the Senate. In that capacity, he or she is allowed to vote in the Senate when necessary to break a tie. While Senate customs have created supermajority rules that have diminished this Constitutional power those rules can be changed.

As President of the Senate, the Vice President has two primary duties: to cast a vote in the event of a Senate deadlock and to preside over and certify the official vote count of the U.S. Electoral College. For example, in the first half of 2001, the Senators were divided 50-50 between Republicans and Democrats and Dick Cheney's tie-breaking vote gave the Republicans the Senate majority.

Is this a legitimate endorsement?

The human body (the brain) has this power, as I understand it, and as doctors have told me, to reject any endorsement that is not "legitimate". What that means is that if you accept any endorsement that was not truly legitimate, that is, that you therefore ENJOYED, then if that endorsement makes you pregnant with thoughts of idiocy, then it is your own fault... not that of the endorser.

Before you know it we'll have a bunch of little bastard candidates running around... all spawned from these illegitimate endorsements.

They're called Tea Party Republicans... and if these illegitimate endorsements truly go national, these little bastard candidates will just be called "Republicans".

If this isn't clear proof that the Republican Party has totally lost it's way, I don't know what is.

Reject this. Let them know that money to endorse trash nets trash.

And yes, Kaybeetoys, we need to include Ryan in that "little bastard candidate" list.

Romney has actually created jobs and done so using nearly bankrupt companies winning 77 percent of the time.

Source, please? See, people have gone looking to see just how much of the time Bain was successful, but Bain is not very forthcoming with any hard numbers. They just claim that 77% number you quote.

Wall Street Journal went looking (source: here) and came up with different numbers. Out of 77 companies taken over while Romney was at the helm, just 10 provided the majority of profit made. 4 of those later went bankrupt. Of that 77 companies, 30% either went bankrupt within 8 years or failed so badly that Bain lost all the money invested in them.

His energy independence by 2020 will create millions of private sector jobs that pay big wages and big taxes

Again, source, please? All Romney has offered is vague promises - no specifics. Given that most of his plan includes the development of oil reserves in this country and that big oil companies get $40B per year tax breaks Romney's plan may consume more tax money, not generate it!

The DOW is only a measure of 30 stocks and is not a measure of the economy, Americans net worth has declined, seems like around 40% under Obama.

Gross misinterpretation of facts. The report you reference with your "40% decline in net worth":

The Federal Reserve released a report, the 2010 Survey of Consumer Finances. This is a report on household wealth from 2007-2010, removing effects of inflation. No surprise, median net worth declined by 38.8% from 2007 to 2010 and is down to 1992 levels. Why this should be no surprise is due to the housing bubble and declining home values. A home is the largest asset many people have.

Get that? 2007 to 2010! This time period includes the huge 2008 downturn and the bursting of the housing bubble, which didn't happen on Obama's watch. In fact, most of that decline in net worth can be pinned directly to George W. Bush specifically and Republicans in general with the stupid policies they enacted to cause it. There is a reason many economists call it the "Bush Recession".

Hey, Fat Guy - I saw onFox Nw yesterday that the S&P 500 is up 113% from it's March 2009 low. Here's a link for you to peruse:

How about you reciprocating by backing up your assertions?

Regarding your claim about net worth dropping under Obama:

http://money.cnn.com/2012/06/11/news/economy/fed-family-net-worth/index.htm

Note that net worth dropped from 2007 - 2010 and was attributed to the recession, which began before Obama took office.

The scary part is that with all the GOP voter fraud coming to light it could actually happen.

If you are talking about what is happening in FL I think you are a little confused. According to our local news here in FL, the way the fraud worked was that because a third party mishandled voter registrations a lot of republicans might not have been able to vote in the election. So this was not about republicans helping their cause at all-unless something new came to light that I'm not aware of.

If that was happening in my party, I'd be calling to get that idiot out of office before he embarrassed us further. But Santorum and others are calling to get him elected. For power. No matter how dumb he is or how poorly he'll represent his state. Same thing with Romney. He had absolutely no support until he bought the nomination. It really is time to vote Republicans out of office. Twelve years ago they allowed the Neo-Conservatives to take over their party and we're still living with the results. Two years ago they allowed the Teabaggers to take over and they refused to help fix the nation.

It's time to tell the Republican party that until the learn to keep their unruly children at bay, they're not allowed to hold public office. Governing is about Country first...not profit. We need to remind the Koch Brothers and Wall Street that...WE ARE THEIR CUSTOMERS AND THEY NEED TO STFU and leave the governing to us.

you republicans are afraid. It is fear that drives you to be conservatives. As children you never ventured very far from the hem of your mother's skirt.

Afraid of what you don't understand.
Afraid of what you cannot control.
      Afraid of the new.
      Clinging to the old.
      Fearing "brown people"
      Fear of "the other"
      Fear of the future
      Fear of unpredictability
      Fear of helplessness
Fear of those who would chide your backwardness

If you people want to take us back to 1950 again then maybe you need to move to Afghanistan. Those people have no problem living in a world without electric lights, communication or penicillin. Everything is simple. Anachronistic. Easy. Non-cerebral. You sip lemonade on the porch and wave to the neighbors passing by on the sidewalk, and "golly-gee Mom,....isn't that swell?"

Now stand aside. Because the rest of us want to advance into the light of the 21st Century, and that place does not include you.

"I'm confident that Mitt Romney will win Ohio, will when the presidency,"

Rick was also confident that he would win the nomination and the presidency! He should have been confident after all god told him too run.

March 26th 2012, Franksville, Wisconsin (CNN) – Rick Santorum on Sunday said Mitt Romney’s ties to universal health care would make him the “worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama” in the general election.

Last week, he was widely criticized for suggesting there are so few differences between his presidential rival and the democratic president that “we may as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk” with Romney.

"Why would we put someone up who is uniquely - pick any other Republican in the country – he is the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama.

I guess that all changed when Romney bought his support by paying off his campaign's debt and promised him a job when he won.

What's refreshing about Ryan's statements are that they make you realize Ryan and others think they've lost the White House and are desperate to keep some power hold in Washington.

I hope their fears and my wishes are right.

If Romney/Ryan gets in I truly fear it could be the Fourth Reich in America. The decisive factor that would put two such horrible men in a position to implement such awful plans would be predominately racism. Since we're in an Oligarchy Fascism is what often follows, as in Germany in the 1930's.

If Obama is reelected there's hope America won't turn into a nightmare.

But he's a republican, so I know he's a rich, lying scumbag who can't wait to start more wars that he nor his family will have to fight in so he and his Bain like buddies can make HUGE profits and change laws to benefit themselves and their even richer supporters which is why they're spending so much money to get him elected.

The line must be fixed to 'how dangerous this presidential candidate is".

Internal polls on both sides say Obama will not win in November. Most of the polls you see on the internet are using 2008 mix of voters to 2008 trends on steroids.

Pritzker (an Obama campaign bundler) says so. 2008 Donors are not returning calls and not donating. Just saw the Election funding, Obama funding is behind Romney in the majority industries.

Remember who is purchasing the polls. Most of them are paid for and specified how to be done by the news media.

Yes, Gallup shows an increase in Obama's lead, but they are being investigated by the DOJ. One other thing about pollsters. When numbers are so far separated, they adjust how they poll. They cannot afford to be an outlier or they will not get the money. Yes, Rasmussen adjusts too!

I'll let you find the articles this time. You have more time to be on here than me.

There's a reason, well, actually many more than one, why this guy isn't the rethugli-con nominee. They could win the Presidency, have a slight majority in the Senate and they still couldn't repeal Obamacare. The reason: the same one the rethugs have used for the last two years to insure very little got through the Senate: the filibuster.

Yes, Gallup shows an increase in Obama's lead, but they are being investigated by the DOJ.

The DOJ investigation concerns how Gallup billed the government for some work and has nothing to do with the firm's results.

The major polling firms don't have an incentive to fake results. If they put out one set of results, but the actual voting is totally different, they've taken a huge hit to their credibility. Political polling is only a part of their business. What company would hire a polling firm with a history of wrong results? Their credibility is far more important than the business thrown their way by one presidential campaign.

And why he especially hates women, taking the side of Akin and Ryan (yes, Ryan & Akin worked together on that anti-women bill) is learning that his wife (God bless her innocent soul) lived for 6 years with a Doctor who performed abortions when necessary. I guess Akin wasn't satisfied with giving rape a pass.He now thinks its ok to pay women less for doing the same work as a man.I guarantee if he made that argument to my wife and daughter he'd be lucky to get out on his feet.I can't understand how a woman can vote for a party that wants them as second class citizens.I feel the same when I see a Black or Latino Republican. How is it they would vote for a party that doesn't accept them as equal citizens,it makes no sense.

You must be talking about the ReRectum Party? The party that sticks it to you when you don't see it coming. The party that can talk out both sides of their mouth depending on who they are talking to. If they are in front of coal people then they love coal, even though they pushed the EPA restrictions. If they are in front of wealthy people in the ReRectum party then the 47% are lazy and won't work. If you are in Florida, then we love Social Security and Medicare and we will take care of you. The party of LIES AND NO'S. People could have been working if it were not for the ReRectum Party.

As for the article it just goes to show that all the GOP cares about is power at any cost, even the destruction of everything this country stands for.

WE will have to be very careful with this coming election. The company that was just caught registering only repub/Tparty came out with a dozen excuses. But, they were also the company that were involved in the 2000 and 2004 elections counting the votes, changing the votes, finding 10,000 votes, operating under different names. All republican paid. We'll have to make a big stink if the elections go awry - be prepared.

"Said at a repub/tparty fundraiser, paraphrased, We have to win this election, this is the most important election in history. We are turning a corner and we're almost there. Do whatever it takes, say whatever it takes, write whatever to make sure we come out on top in all races. Remember what Norquist said and do your part for our party [repub/tparty]."

That war on coal is aimed at the Democrats but it should be aimed at the Republicans. Who is behind moving ahead the EPA on coal? Not the democrats but the republicans. They want their gas and oil and their big money. Romney even switched his state to gas when he was governor because he didn't want the coal air in his state and blowing into other states. So when he stands up to you coal miners and says he supports coal, think again. Check it out on the web if you don't think I am telling you the truth.

5,000 American kids DEAD in the Middle East

1,100 people dead in New Orleans

America shamed and disgraced, and hated

......and all to make a few hundred Americans, including Romney, rich.

The dems come closer than the 'pugs but still miss badly. Pelosi needs to go. Reid is an idiot. They (the dems) were given power in 2006 to stop bushco and the wars and they rolled over as easy as 10$ hookers. They failed miserably. Even with majorities in 2008 and control of both houses, they failed. Reid should have changed the filibuster. The dems aren't our real answer.

I didn't forget,Barbara. But the dems had the votes to change the Senate rules rules with a simple 51 vote majority. They could have made the filibuster threshold 55 or even 51 or even less. The threshold has not always been 60 votes. In fact, that is a somewhat recent change. Reid and the dems should have changed that rather than wring their hands. That, to me, was an inexcusable mistake. They ALLOWED the pugs to tie them up. This is why I say Reid is an idiot.

I am certain that had the pugs had these majorities, the dems could not have stopped them. Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

That's what we thought after bush/cheney's first term and guess what, they got in again. The fact the election was stolen, fixed, paid off - made no difference. There was very little or nothing from the millions of Americans who knew our votes were stolen. 3 months later it was proven, but bush/cheney stayed in.

We have our country to lose. If a repub/tparty is in power, they will adjudicate laws that will keep the Fourth Reich in power for a long time. An appointment for a US Supreme Court Justice will be certain to come up this coming term. That will spell the end of justice in this country for a very long time. There is no question that WE need to re-elect President Obama.

Maybe I wasn't clear.Reid is a clever tactician in a campaign and what he said about Romney's taxes was brilliant. But as far as running the Senate, I think he's done a poor job. I like him personally. But that doesn't make him any better than he is. Changing the Senate procedural rules is a no brainer. Furthermore, if the repugs take a majority this year, you can be certain that the first time the dems filibuster, the pugs will do exactly this rule change to lock out the dems ability to stop them.

Pelosi has quite a few conflict charges against her and I'm not sure that all are without merit. She has been pretty good at hammering through legislation but if she's dirty- and I think she MIGHT be- then she needs to go. At least from a leadership position. It appears from what I've read that she profited on stocks from insider knowledge of pending Congressional actions. If true, this is unacceptable. She should go and lose that money. That's a clear conflict of interest.

All of this notwithstanding, there is nothing more important at this moment than to show the repugnicans, not just to the door, but to the border. They are more suited to a Taliban mentality. We should pay for their flight to Afghanistan...one way. And then seal the borders. And then clean up any in Congress who are personally profiting from "serving" us. This sounds like Will Rogers' description of govt service to me. And we need to stop allowing the revolving door from corp. America to regulatory agencies and back again. This is much like allowing the fox to design the security for the henhouse. The dems have been soft on this as well,IMO. The dems cannot place corporate America first and us at the same time. They should choose. For all of my contempt for the pugs, I must give them credit for this: they have chosen their master. It's not us. The dems should choose as well. Obama has, I think, but I'm not sure that most of the Dems in Congress have.

Thomas Blue - you above all should know that Congress is exempt from insider trading laws

Now if you want to nail Nancy Pelosi to the Cross - get a bigger cross - Eric Cantor for one - and most of any and all in Congress who sit on Committees have profited from insider knowledge

These rules were discussed to be changed - but again the Republicans resisted

So my girl is DIRTY? - than so is all of Congress

And by the way there are no conflict charges against her - Maxine Waters had a few and she was vindicated

I understand your point, but I'm not simple minded like you. I understand the reality of this election and the impact it will have on our nation for the next 20-30 years to come. Now is a time to vote a straight Democratic ticket, because Republicans have succeeded only in obstructing progress from being made in the last 2 years. Progress in cleaning up the mess that they willingly left us after 8 years of Bush. Democrats need to support only the Democratic party right now, as does anyone else that wants to have a chance to get REAL work done. I also prefer to get some moderate Republicans back in office and the only way to do that is send a clear message to the Tea Baggers and right wing extremists in office now: WE DON'T WANT YOU RUINING OUR COUNTRY, AND WE WILL NOT VOTE FOR YOU OR YOUR PARTY OF NO!!!

The frightening thing is that the right wing lunatic fringe is only a few sheets away from returning to the bad old days of Jim Crow, institutionalized bigotry, and violently enforced social behavior that is rooted in their narrow-minded, intolerant religious beliefs and practices. The only thing that keeps the US from becoming a hyper-extreme christian theocracy are the rational voices of the middle and center left in America. Fortunately, most Americans are moderates and we reject the GOP's failed religio-political ideology. Even though the GOP/TP/Neo-Fascist Party is being marginalized by their insane agendas, we cannot afford to pretend they will go away: we must vote and we must remain involved in America or our freedoms will be snatched away by a crazed minority of right wing lunatics just as Afghanistan is terrorized by a minority of dangerous religious fanatics.

Vote for the rational choice in November as though your freedoms are depending on it: President Obama and Joltin' Joe Biden! It's morning again in America!

Didn't Dubya and his Secretary of the Interior provide full access to Abramoff to set the budget for DOI? Didn't Abramoff denigrate American Indians by calling them troglodytes? I believe this instance alone qualifies to be labeled as Jim Crow racist events which provides proof positive since Abramoff went to prison along with other Senators, Congressmen and Griles from DOI. Is this proof enough for you or are you still in denial that the GOP is the party of racists and bigots?

The Republican party is the party of:

Racist, bigots and crooks, oh my!... Racist, bigots and crooks, oh my!

It has a sound that ring true to it. That yellow brick road is what happens when you let trickle down policies run the country and it ain't gold we have been stepping in.

In other words, you don't have any specific laws to reference that have anything to do with Jim Crow. It looks like you can only refer to certain discredited people from the past administration as well. Not a lot for me to go on for this election...

Rick Santorum on Saturday said the entire Republican Party should voice its support for Senate candidate Todd Aiken of Missouri -- including the top of the party's presidential ticket.

That's fine and all, but maybe Santorum should back Todd Akin as well. :)

For Republicans to boast about wanting smaller government, they're sure cool with big government when it comes to a woman's body. How do they address this? And who gave them the right to decide what women should be able to do with our bodies? Todd and Santorum and Ryan are extremists. The Republican party has more nut cases now than ever before. They used to be smart and civilized and made sense. Those days are over. Hence, Mitt and Todd, et al.

Sorry to disagree Terry - the Republican Party have never been civilized - smart maybe - they always had a "bag of tricks" up their sleeve

If you ever listened to FDR's famous speech about Social Security - he had them pegged for the liars they are

And thank god - after thirty years of denigrating Jimmy Carter a man who did serve - versus a B-Actor that only made speeches about serving - he finally got his revenge - via his grandson

I equate Republicans to "teenagers or possibly 2 year olds" who think they are the center of the UNIVERSE - whereas Democrats know we are part of the UNIVERSE

Barbara - One qualification. The Republican party has been bereft of civility in our lifetimes. You and I go back to Eisenhower (I go back to Truman). Eisenhower had a sense of civility, though his VP was the first of the modern Republicans to screw the pooch.

The repub/tparty is using the abortion issue as a distraction from the real issue - CHOICE. CHOICE that will impact all Americans in other areas eventually if they get elected. The repub/tparty is relying heavily on the use of "person, unborn feeling pain, murder" and other terms I can't remember right now, but Luntz has a pageful of terms to evoke maternal emotion in women and anger in men, not necessarily christians or other faith based, just the populace in general. The repub/tparty goes into great detail of this medical procedure only to see people cringe, bring on tears - most of their spiel is either not true or over the top scientifically. In any event, if the repub/tparty was true in their feeling of the unborn person, where are they after the birth? Gone. Out with social programs that would stabilize this baby and mother, out with health care and basic food needs. The repub/tparty is playing both sides of their sword and it's working on this abortion distraction.

The republicans played this same ploy with schools. Today we have Charter Schools, profit makers on taxpayer money. Christian and other faith based schools receive subsidies for lunch programs, free school bus rides, subsidized books. Charter schools have already proven that they are not what the republicans claimed when they first tooted their horns.

The republican money bags wove a web that reaches into every realm in our U.S., from the environment to religion. The Tparty is the brass knuckles of the republican party. Their moves parallel the third reich, make no mistake.

The wish for Democratics to stay in the White House and take control of Congress is not just a wish, it's a necessity for the future of our U.S.

              OBAMA-BIDEN 2012 and a Strong Democratic Congress

              The alternative is unbearable.

I'm afraid that you're being too optimistic. When Romney loses, the taliban wing of the GOP will claim it is because Romney wasn't conservative enough. I wish Santorum had been the candidate. His loss would finally wake up enough of the GOP and force them to realize that the party has gone over the cliff. As it is, I'm afraid that it'll linger in its death throes for another decade or two until the old white, male (and supposedly straight) fogey's die off.

Mitt and Todd and Ryan and Newt and Boehner and Cantor and McConnell are dangerous because they care more about party than they do this country. And their base believes every word that comes out of their mouths. Running a country requires a different set of skills than running a business. You need a heart and compassion to run a country. Mitt is so rich the only thing left for him to achieve is the White House. This is about his ego, not patriotism.

recent ads for repealing Obamacare saying the middle class will be paying new taxes. However, you must keep in mind that Romney considers the middle class to be people pulling down $250,000. per year or more.

So, when you hear the ads saying the middle class will be paying more, remember who they are talking about. And I always thought the middle class was between $75,000 and $100,000. per year.

New Consumers Report has a breakdown in it's most recent publication of who pays and who doesn't.

The comment we KNOW about is bad enough. I'm willing to believe that he may not have immediately been aware of all the terrible implications of his words-an implied accusation that if a woman got pregnant then it must not have "really" been rape-but for heaven's sake, a politician should know better than to make a comment like that about a politically charged issue like abortion unless he had several peer reviewed studies supporting what he said! When you get asked a question like the one he was asked, as a politician he should have a good answer. Say "yes," say "no," say, "I'll get back to you," if you don't want to make a statement right then-but don't give out pseudoscience!

I don't know, we have a hell of a lot of red-necked bigots in this backwater of a state.

Red neck bigots are all over the place, from Boston to Bakersfield, from Seattle to Savanah. Its' always been that way. Mark Twain commented on that saying to the effect, it's a great disadvantage to the human race that lightning strikes aren't so well distributed.

Tell one Red Necked Idiot that another Red Necked Idiot just called him a Red Necked Idiot, and see what happens.

Wow - politics of desperation. This man is Neanderthal - he does not represent the entire Western Civilization and its understanding of biology since......we started making babies. Are these men witches? More like arrogant control freaks - no human has any measure of control over life like Republicans think they can have. Do the math! And, Jesus isn't on your side - he threw the money lenders out of the temple, you clowns. Look for all the Conspiracy theories you want on the left or the right. It doesn't matter - by the time you figure it out, you are left behind. Republicans hate history because it doesn't allow them to write their own fiction. History shows that change is the one constant - no change is an aberration.

Roz, no need to go giving the Neanderthals a bad name, they have been found to have a decent culture, compassion for their dead, Music, art and many things that we have, til now, thought only belonged to Homo Sapiens. In short, they were not quite so backwards as we are finding the Repub/TPers party to be!

Neanderthal in a sweater vest. Heck of a picture in my mind.

To be fair, not all religious perverts are Republicans.
