Ryan readies for 3-day debate camp

ON THE CAMPAIGN CHARTER HEADING TO OHIO -- The same day as the first presidential debate of the 2012 election, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan will begin a three-day debate camp.

Campaign spokesman Brendan Buck told reporters aboard the Ryan press charter Saturday afternoon Rep. Ryan will head to the battleground state of Virginia on Wednesday for an extended debate prep session, commonly referred to as ‘debate camp.’

No reason for selecting Virginia was given, however, advisers in the past have said the camp would likely be in a battleground state, likely in the Eastern time zone, and “somewhere where there aren’t distractions.”

Mitt Romney, who will be debating President Barack Obama in Denver on Wednesday, held his own debate camp in Vermont in early September.

Portman joins Romney for debate prep in Vermont

Ryan’s first formal debate prep day was Sept. 9 in Oregon with his most recent formal debate practice session held this past Sunday in a hotel in Janesville, Wis. Ted Olson, the former solicitor general under President George W. Bush, has been playing the part of Vice President Joe Biden during practice sessions and is expected to be in the Old Dominion state next week as well.

Paul Ryan holes up for debate

Ryan and Biden will debate just once during this election in Danville, Ky., on Oct. 11 – exactly two months after Ryan was tapped as Romney’s running mate, also in Virginia where debate camp will occur.

The campaign told the traveling press a few weeks ago that the seven-term Wisconsin congressman has been going through large white binders -- “organized by issue areas” -- of policy information, research, and news of the day since the Republican National Convention ended at the end of August.

While there has not been much discussion regarding the VP debate in terms of debate expectations -- as most eyes are on the first presidential debate in four days -- two Ryan advisers appeared to downplay expectations for the House Budget Chairman when they spoke to the traveling press in Reno, Nev., in early September.

“Vice President Joe Biden served over 30 years in the United States Senate, he has run for president twice and has severed as vice president for the past four years. He is one of the most experienced debaters in American political life and we definitely don’t take the challenge lightly,” an adviser said.

Ryan focuses heavily on raising money Sunday and Monday -- holding fundraisers throughout Connecticut and New York City – before heading to the key state of Iowa for four campaign events. He will then turn his focus to debate prep leading up to the final weekend before the debate in Kentucky.

Paulie better put down Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged and learn some foreign policy. Joe is going to make mincemeat out of Ryan. Like everything from the GoP this fall, this should be comical.

Romney and Ryan have looked like pathetic losers up until now. Why should the debates be any different?

Why would you conservatives have a problem with the Pres. being a communist when Jesus was a real life communist. Jesus didn't say to share he said for the rich to give everything they had to the poor. Everything.

      It doesn't matter how many lies Obama and Biden tell; the libs will just sling more childish insults and come up with fantastic excuses for them (like "The Tea Party is composed of terrorists who are more powerful than the President and the Senate combined").

      None so blind as those who will not see.

      We can only hope that any true independents left will read the drivel being posted by the left wing and ask themselves, "Are these the people I want running my country?"

      Actually, Kannin, I see things differently from you. You say Democrats will believe any lies uttered by Obama and Biden. I believe most Republican Party supporters are anti-intellectual morons who are emotionally predisposed to accepting factually incorrect, unsubstantiated or even easily contradicted propaganda as truth. Republican ideologues appeal to these imbeciles by fomenting their fears, their deep-seated racism, and their dogmatic religiosity to wage culture wars that were lost on the streets and in the homes of Americans 40-50 years ago, by continuing to beat the drum for unchecked capitalism whose "job creators" have shipped jobs overseas to exploit cheaper labor for greater profits and, through risky investment schemes unleashed by deregulation, which have imperiled the health of the world's economies for the last four years.

      Republican sheeple have been led to believe at least 10 lies/fictions:

      (1) that governance by a representative democracy is itself an invasion of some nebulous concept of freedom or liberty, using rhetorically charged jingoes like "let's take our government back." For example, Ron Paul's argument that federal legislation is invalid unless authorized by the 10th Amendment was completely wrong. The 10th Amendment (states right's argument) has invalidated only two federal laws in over 70 years, and only when the law inflicted horrible burdens on the states. It was such a silly argument that it was not offered nor considered by the Supreme Court when it recently upheld the ACA;

      (2) that the federal government is their enemy, that its workers are quasi-welfare cheats, and that employee unions are grotesque thieves of taxes paid by hard-working Americans, which is all part of a widespread campaign to reduce the federal budget because federal income taxes are the only progressive system that taxes according to income earned, and the wealthy pay the lion's share now, which must be changed if we're going to have prosperity for all. Republican ideologues continue to argue for lower federal taxes for the wealthy in the name of "trickle down," which has empirically been shown actually to be "trickle up: "The top 20% now take home 85% of every dollar earned, see and between 1979 and 2007, the annual income of "t]he top 1% of income earners saw their after-tax income shoot up a whopping 275% . . . , and in the process more than doubled their share of all income, jumping from 8% to 17%, according to a new report from the Congressional Budget Office." at the same time worker wages have remained flat or have been declining after taking into account the higher contributions by workers to worker benefits like health care and retirement. "Today the top 1 percent of Americans control 43 percent of the financial wealth . . . while the bottom 80 percent control only 7 percent of the wealth. Incredibly, the wealthiest 400 Americans have the same combined wealth as the poorest half of Americans -- over 150 million people. "Republicans favor tax cuts for the wealthy and the corporations, but these had no stimulative effect during the George W. Bush administration and there is no reason to believe that more of them will have any today." Advocates of a flat federal income tax system would also rescue our wealthiest taxpayers from progressive taxation;

      (3) that 47% (or 48% or 49%)of Americans pay no taxes at all, lazy people who would rather live off the sweat of productive taxpayers rather than work or seek work despite the fact that 91% of all federal entitlement benefits are paid to elderly retirees, the disabled, and to children whose parents make less than what is defined as the current poverty level, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities: "Using the 2010 federal budget and U.S. Census data , the [Center on Budget and Policy Priorities] finds that 53 percent of all government entitlement benefits are going to people who are over 65 years old. Another 20 percent of the benefits went to disabled people, while 18 percent were going to people in a working household. The data was for the government's 2010 fiscal year. That means that 9 percent of entitlements went to people who were not elderly, disabled or living in a household in which someone had worked at least 1,000 hours in a year." #c63737998. And, of course, the 47% who don't pay federal income taxes pay payroll taxes, state taxes, property taxes, excise taxes, gasoline taxes, and sales taxes. The dolts who insist on the myth that virtually half the country is made up of "lazy, self-entitled Freddie Freeloaders" are actually unwittingly inveighing against their parents and grandparents, those too disabled to work, and against children in working families whose income is below the poverty line;

      (3) the unemployment is largely the result of increased federal governmental regulation and could be solved, at least in part, by deregulation. For example, on August 29, 2011, “the House majority leader, Eric Cantor of Virginia, send a memorandum to members of the House Republican Conference, telling them to make the repeal of job-destroying regulations the key point in the Republican jobs agenda. “By pursuing a steady repeal of job-destroying regulations, we can life the cloud of uncertainty handing over small and large employers alike, empowering them to hire more workers, “ Mr. Cantor said. “Economix, October 4, 2011, 6:00 a.m. In fact, “the number of layoffs nationwide caused by government regulation is miniscule and hows no evidence of getting worse during the Obama administration. Lack of demand for business product and services is vastly more important.” Ibid. “While concerns about regulation have risen during the Obama administration, they are about the same now as they were during Ronald Reagan’s administration, according to an analysis of the federation’s data by the Economic Policy Institute.” Ibid. According to Bruce Bartlett, an economic advisor to Ronald Reagan, “regularity uncertainty is a canard invented by Republicans that allows them to use current economic problems to pursue an agenda supported by the business community year in and year out. In other words, it is a simple case of political opportunism, not a serious effort to deal with high unemployment.” Ibid. The combination of deregulation and privatization of governmental functions is part of the Republican adoption of the economic beliefs of Milton Friedman, whose neoliberalism or “laissez faire capitalism” under the rubric of “austerity” have led to the same kind of massive transfer of wealth from the middle class to the wealthy we are experiencing now that already crippled the middle class in Pinochet’s Chile, post-Glasnost Russia, and Lech Walesa’s Poland.

      (4) that Obamacare contains provisions for "death panels" to pull the plug on grannie's medical care, but, when asked for textual proof, suggest it's impossible to find because the bill is about 2000 pages long even though if such provisions existed they could be easily found by using "death panel" as the search phrase;

      (5) that Obamacare is an example of Communism or Socialism even though the other 24 top industrial nations in the world have some form of single-payer/government-run healthcare (we're the only ones without single payer healthcare; were the only country in which the corporate influence of Big Insurance and Big Pharma is more powerful than the 55%-80% of the American public in a variety of polls who wanted a public option to create price competition for private insurance carriers but were given instead a public mandate, which guarantees that Big Insurance and Big Pharma will receive billions in more revenues by forcing even young, healthy Americans, who might otherwise be disinclined to purchase health insurance that is no longer being provided as a job benefit, to pay into the pool on pain of a fine, all courtesy of the Republican Party in its role as relentless warriors for the wealthy,

      (5) Obama is a Muslim--after all, he has "Hussein" as a middle name, even though he has attended Christian churches throughout his life in Chicago, for which he was also alternatively pilloried because the right doesn't like some of the preachings of its pastor, Jeremiah Wright;

      (6) Obama was born in Kenya or Indonesia even after he was the first President hounded to produce proof of his being a native-born American, which he disclosed by producing a copy his birth certificate, a certificate that to any rational mind should put to rest any claims to the contrary but doesn't as bombastic Donald Trump and other nitwits carry on a campaign for the benefit of the witless Republican voters who remain dogmatically steadfast;

      (7) that the phenomenon of global warming is an anti-capitalist conspiracy by scientists even though the vast majority of climate scientists not paid by Big Oil say otherwise, a virtual consensus that it is a threat to inundate coastal land throughout the world and needs to be reversed yesterday to blunt its threats, at a time when climate researchers are saying we're reaching a tipping point: "Earth is rapidly headed toward a catastrophic breakdown if humans don't get their act together, according to an international group of scientists. Writing Wednesday (June 6) in the journal Nature, the researchers warn that the world is headed toward a tipping point marked by extinctions and unpredictable changes on a scale not seen since the glaciers retreated 12,000 years ago. "There is a very high possibility that by the end of the century, the Earth is going to be a very different place," study researcher Anthony Barnosky told LiveScience. Barnosky, a professor of integrative biology from the University of California, Berkeley, joined a group of 17 other scientists to warn that this new planet might not be a pleasant place to live. "You can envision these state changes as a fast period of adjustment where we get pushed through the eye of the needle," Barnosky said. "As we're going through the eye of the needle, that's when we see political strife, economic strife, war and famine. . . ;"

      (8) that federal taxes are more burdensome than ever even though federal tax rates are at their lowest in the last approximately 60 years: "Most Americans today pay less in federal income taxes than they have in 60 years, and far less than they have during other wars. . . .This is particularly true for the wealthy: By 2007, the richest 400 Americans paid an average of 16.6% in income taxes, thanks to exemptions and low capital-gains taxes, far less than the same group had paid decades ago and well below the 26.4% that group had been taxed only 15 years earlier. Add the hit of economic turmoil, and in the past two years the federal government has collected less of the nation's income than at any time since 1950: 14.9% of gross domestic product in taxes, compared with a post-World War II average of about 18%. One percentage point today equates to about $140 billion. "Overall, taxes are very low right now," said Chuck Marr, the director of federal tax policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a nonpartisan Washington, D.C., research group. In addition, "you have this tremendous shift (of wealth) in the United States to high-income people." "Republicans favor tax cuts for the wealthy and the corporations, but these had no stimulative effect during the George W. Bush administration and there is no reason to believe that more of them will have any today."

      (9) that America can solve high gas prices by opening up drilling everywhere in the United States, that following a policy labeled, "drill, baby, drill" will lower the price of gasoline in the United States. In fact, AP published a statistical analysis of 36 years of monthly, inflation-adjusted gasoline prices and U.S. domestic oil production. . . ," and concluded that: "No statistical correlation between how much oil comes out of U.S. wells and the price at the pump." 20 oil experts agreed that the findings of the survey were correct. Fact Check: More US drilling didn't drop gas price, © 2012 The Associated Press, based on information from U.S. Energy Information Administration: also "Drill, baby, drill" has always been a battle cry by Republicans to curry favor with Big Oil;

      (10) that Obama and Congress are invading the precincts of the Catholic Church by requiring Catholic hospitals to offer contraceptives as part of workers' health plans. Jesus himself reportedly said, ""Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's." Matthew 22:21”. The Catholic Church isn't the final arbiter as to where the domain of religion ends and the secular world begins. In fact, the Catholic Bishops (not the Church as a whole) are seeking to invade the secular world by seeking to extend the reach of its religious dogma to dictate the health options enjoyed by female workers who are not Catholic, are Catholics who practice birth control, women who serve patients of all religious stripes in a setting that is medical, not ecclesiastic just because the hospital bears the name of a Catholic saint. The Republican Party wouldn’t dare attempt to characterize divorce, which is antithetical to Catholic teachings and is authorized in all 50 states, as an invasion of Catholics’ religious freedom, yet have no compunctions in taking up the religious cudgel when assailing health options of female workers. Republicans are great at promoting intolerance and provoking divisiveness to gain political advantage, as they do by saying, as to the 47% argument, Romney “may have been inelegant, but what he was saying was true.”

      Republicans have used disinformation and propaganda to seduce the fearful, the poorly educated, and religious fundamentalists into voting against their economic interests for years. But this time, they’ve gone too far and they’ll lose badly in the Electoral College.

                                      Smart leaders don't come out prematurely and fan the flames. They let the proper agencies do their intelligence gathering and go from there. That's what a true leader does, not overreact... In case you forgot this was in Libya not the US!

                                      The United States secretly shipped out of Iraq more than 500 tons of low-grade uranium dating back to the Saddam Hussein era, the Pentagon said Monday.

                                      The U.S. military spent $70 million ensuring the safe transportation of 550 metric tons of the uranium from Iraq to Canada, said Pentagon spokesman Brian Whitman.

                                      The shipment, which until recently was kept secret, involved a U.S. truck convoy, 37 cargo flights out of Baghdad to a transitional location, and then a transoceanic voyage on board a U.S.-government-owned ship designed to carry troops to a war zone, he said.

                                      The "yellowcake" uranium transfer was requested by the Iraqi government at the encouragement of the U.S. government, Whitman said.

                                      The United States approached Canadian company Cameco to bid for the material, according Cameco spokesman Lyle Krahn. He would not disclose the winning bid amount.

                                      Krahn admitted that this was not a "routine transaction," but he said the agreement was approved by the Canadian government and was carefully monitored.

                                      The undertaking, named "Operation McCall" by Pentagon officials, was in the planning stages for months and was completed Saturday after the material had been in transit for weeks, according to Whitman.

                                        Boy, mmac, you need to polish your three cornered tin foil hat. The only weapons found in Iraq were old ones that your deity Ronald Reagan give to Iraq to use against Iran, there was noting in Iraq. Figure this out. Saddam knew his days were numbered. Don't think for one minute that he wouldn't have used them on us if he had them? All you got is Fox facts and Rush Limbaugh ism's. there is nothing to back up your lies.

                                        You mean the party that uses religion to its advantage. The party that declared war on a Sovereign Nation and has now destabilized a whole region. This war caused the death of hundreds of thousands of innocent people, and not to mention American soldiers. The party that left this country in the worst recession, since the great depression. The party that is now being lead by a Mormon. Look up this religion. I didn't bring this up just listen to what Rick Perry's Evangelical preacher said about Mormons. I didn't say it he did. Ask any Evangelical, or better yet do some research and read before you make a comment on a blog.

                                              In response to the consulate attack, the president said, "The United States is a nation that respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others."

                                              U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said the Libya attack was "spontaneous" and started with the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, over an anti-Islamic film.

                                              The staff of the Cairo embassy, … condemned the film and the "continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions."

                                              Democratic strategist Kirsten Powers said Monday the question now is whether the Obama administration lied, or is clueless. She acknowledged neither is a great scenario.

                                              I go with the "Obama is clueless" theory.

                                                  The attack in Libya WAS A TERRORIST ATTACK. Obummer foreign policy FAILED in the middle east!!!

                                                  Obama's amateur, fumbling attempts at foreign policy in the Middle East have been an embarrassment to himself and to the US.

                                                  First, he publicly and loudly affirmed his support for a Palestinian state. This had the predictable effect of encouraging the Palestinians to seek their own separate state. Then, he had to order his Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, to veto any UN resolution that might actually create a Palestinian state, in order to salvage the Jewish vote.

                                                  Most presidents (not all) have had sense enough to be consistent in the messages they send to the international community. Reversals, like Obama's, only create an atmosphere of uncertainty and distrust. Obama's blundering could well be an important factor in the Middle East violence we see today.

                                                        Because I watched Romney smile about it on T.V. and I have seen all the lies the Republicans told about it and I saw with my own eyes that you did not even give this family a chance to mourn and I have seen how happy Republicans seem to be to have some bad news to wave at Pres. Obama.

                                                                  You Neo-Cons have been saying that the polls have been tweaked by the Lib-Media or for any other number of reasons are wrong.

                                                                  Well I gotta tell ya what I found only proves what the Polls are saying. Of all the people I talked to the ones that would share who they are voting for, and only a few wouldn't share, were not just solidly behind the President. The were so enthusiastically FOR The President and vehemently AGAINST rOMNEHY/rYAN I was really surprised. One gal had just learned her voter registration wasn't up to snuff and was so glad to get register so she could "VOTE AGAINST THAT 1% SOB" I had to back off to keep here from giving me a big kiss, right in front of her husband.

                                                                  I think Waffling Willard and Lie'n Ryan better look for votes somewhere besides MY State ... Colorado ... because given the opportunity Coloradans would tar and feather him and run him out of our state.

                                                                  All the President has to do is not loose Wednesday, Mit has to win overwhelmingly, and he can't even get his story straight/the same two days in a row.

It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America . Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of Idiots such as those who made him their president." (said to be an English translation of an article in the Prague newspaper by Prager Zeitung)

                                                                  Wrong again John! The total workforce is 155 million. The average unemployment rate under Bush was 5%. Multiply those two numbers and you get an average of 7,750,000 workers who were unemployed.

                                                                  Similarly, the average unemployment rate under Obama was 9% which translates to 13,950,000 unemployed workers.

                                                                  That means that an average of 6 million more workers were unemployed under Obama than under Bush. I'm sure these simple facts will incite all the usual left-wing sound bites, remarks taken out of context, "clever" misspellings, childish name-calling, and outright lies; but these facts will remain undeniably true.

                                                                    NY Times: "Leveraged buyouts are often associated with hostile takeovers to break up companies. But under Mr. Romney, Bain Capital took a smoother approach. It presented itself to corporate management teams as a partner that would help improve performance, sometimes by investing to buy smaller competitors. Its first move was usually trying to persuade management to let Bain take over." http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/04/us/politics/04bain.html?pagewanted=3

                                                                    Even if Obama "inherited" a bad economy he has been incapable of making it better. Romney has demonstrated that he can take an organization that has been mismanaged to the point of bankruptcy and make it prosperous once again. His success rate has been nothing short of miraculous, and Romney is who we need to turn this country around, and not just make finger-pointing speeches.

I'm smart enough not to a)believe that your sources are reliable; and b) even assuming that they are, why would I place any significance on an opinion written by someone who is a citizen of a country that just spent the last fifty years under communist rule? Should I trust his judgment?

                                                                    In fact, my intelligence level is fairly high. I am well-read and well-educated and am just about smart enough to know bs when I see it.

                                                                    I believe the President has done a damn fine job under the circumstances. He took over an economy poised on the brink of total collapse, turned it around, put it back into growth mode and managed to prevent the loss of 1.5 million jobs with the bailout of the car industry. We have grown another 4.5 million jobs in the last 3.5 years. Our GDP has been growing steadily, if slowly, and the wars (one of the biggest financial drains on our national budget) are either over or winding down.

                                                                    If Obama had gotten even a scintilla of cooperation from the Tea Bag Congress, I believe the recovery would be moving much faster. This is why I am working as hard as possible to insure that Obama is reelected and the Tea Baggers are booted out of Congress.

                                                                    And the absolute finishing touch, the Tea Baggers have repeatedly refused to repeal the tax credits to businesses taking jobs overseas and transfer those credits to businesses bringing jobs back to the US. That is a revenue neutral proposal that would only add to the number of jobs available and it is the Republicans who continue to block the legislation. So the only people interfering with our recovery are the Republicans. Why would I vote for the people who are deliberately trying to stall the recovery? Why would I vote for the people who want to reward those who take jobs offshore? You are the foolish one, because you are supporting these people.

                                                                      #154.10 - Sun Sep 30, 2012 1:32 AM EDT
