Subscribe to RSSBOCA RATON, Fla. -- Courting the over-65 set in retiree-rich southern Florida Friday, Vice President Joe Biden accused the GOP presidential ticket of planning to poach the Medicare and Social Security tax benefits of the middle class to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy.
"If Governor Romney’s plan goes into effect, it could mean that everyone, everyone of you, would be paying more taxes on your Social Security," Biden told hundreds of retirees at the Century Village community in Boca Raton. "The average senior would have to pay $460 a year more in taxes for their Social Security."
The Obama campaign traces that math to the claim that Romney's tax policy would necessarily require the elimination of some middle-class tax deductions. Using data from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, they determine that Romney would have to cut tax benefits for those earning under $200,000 by 58 percent. Spreading those cuts evenly across all benefits would work out to an average of $460 per year per senior.
But Team Romney counters that those numbers are based on a third party's assessment that's riddled with uncertainties and assumptions rather than Romney's actual plan, which the campaign promises on its website "will not raise [Social Security] taxes and will not affect today's seniors or those nearing retirement."
Republicans also point out that Biden himself voted for a 1993 measure that expanded the taxable portion of Social Security benefits for many low-income seniors.
In Florida Friday, Biden said Romney's tax plan was not "moral" because of what he claims would be unfair hikes on the middle class.
"How can you justify a middle class that has been clobbered by the policies that brought on this great recession, adding taxes to them and drastically cutting taxes for the very wealthy," he told a group made up mostly of seniors in Tamarac. "It's not right, I don't even think it's moral, and beyond that it will not help the economy, it will hurt the economy."
In slamming the GOP ticket, Biden also joked that he can't determine if Romney would actually roll back the Obama-backed health care plan after Romney's on-again off-again embrace of some of its core tenets.
"He said 'well, we’re going to maybe ... do that, but I’d like to keep a lot of the good stuff,' and then his campaign says, 'no no no, he didn’t mean that,' " Biden said.
The vice president, who also won laughs from the elderly crowds for jokes about his age and a Lawrence Welk shout-out that would have sailed over the heads of a younger audience, was warmly received at his campaign events. But he did face persistent questioning on the Obama administration's health care plan when he stopped at Nestor's, a Jewish deli in Boca Raton.
Steve Grossman, a 39-year-old who said he worked in the financial services industry, approached Biden as he sat down to order a tuna salad platter and began asking about health insurance costs. The vice president initially seemed reluctant to answer, cutting Grossman off to order his food and to chat with another patron's husband on the phone, but he ended up offering a description of state-based health care exchanges more fitting for a think tank roundtable than a deli specializing in "the mother of all Pastrami sandwiches."
"You can get more benefits for less money," he told Grossman in between slurps of chicken soup. "You get to choose among those insurance companies that are competing as part of the exchanges."

I thought I was being pranked, when I sat down yesterday to have a discussion with a Rebub, and the conversartion got around to Medicare. This guy vowed to vote for R&R, and the Democrats better keep their hand off my Medicare and Social Security. I don't want the government involved in my benefits. I think this guy listened to Limbaugh too much. If you do think of this if the Government takes more than $1 Trillion Dollars from these programs to pay for Obama-Care just who's benefits will be cut? You don't need calculated to figure that one out. The other part of the game is to find your parents or grand parents and ask them what will happen to them if their benefits are going to be cut? That is happening right now. Get a clue your taking up space. Either that or you pick up the added expenses that they can not.
Anyway you look at it it will take an act of Congress to get the measure through. Just think it might not be forced through like Obama-Care was.

The fact is that Obama/Biden and company are removing billions from Medicare which means that seniors are going to have to pay more. As mentioned in a previous post, the Democrats helped create Social Security, Medicare, and several other beneficial programs. Then, they promptly took the money that was supposed to fund Medicare and Social Security and spent it on pork barrel projects, leaving useless IOU's in the treasury. Now, they are doing it again with Obamacare. Only Democrats can pee on your head and tell you it's raining!

Everyone who is under the Medicare Part D drug program knows what a farce it is and what a boondoggle for the drug companies and the health insurers. The law, signed by Bush, requires me to choose a health insurance company for a Part D policy (mine is $31 per month but will increase by 27% next year). The insurance industry divided up the US so I must choose from a very limited number of companies. Then I pay a co-pay for the drug I need to keep my legs attached; Plavix. The insurance company pays the pharmacist and then bills Medicare for costs plus an administrative fee.
The Part D law prohibits Medicare from negotiating drug costs with the drug manufacturers so the cost of these drugs, as well as the insurance premiums, will continue to go up forever.
Another little gem is that when Bush signed Part D there was no appropriation to go with it - it is a totally unfunded program that is costing billions a year. Kind of like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan being unfunded with the costs kicked down the road.
A one month supply of Plavix - 30 pills - retails in the US for around $400; in Canada, Australia, England and France the cost is equivalent to around $50 US dollars. Why? Because these other countries negotiate with the drug manufacturers to ensure the lowest cost to citizens and a reasonable return to the drug companies.
Part D will go a long way to bankrupting Medicare, but the insurers and drug companies will do just fine.

This was a MULTI $BILLION gift from the GOP to drug companies. Billy Tauzin, main GOP sponsor of the PART D drug bill, was rewarded with a $1 MILLION/YEAR job as a lobbyist for big pharma. Taxpayers got screwed by the GOP,again.

Further, the 700B was put into Obama care, extended the life of Medicare by 8 more years. Romney said Ryans takes the same $700 billion in his Medicare savings, and does not specify where it goes. Can you say to pay for tax cuts for the 1% Your reply does not even make sense, first of alol I am 76 years of age, have both benefits and damn glad I have them, and in all my research along with the same guys that booed Ryan in Florida, no better than to believe the Republicans who never wanted Medicare or Social ecurity can be trusted to keep their word, and we sure are not going to wait to get the details ( as R&R want us to do), after we vote for them. Joe and Obama should get their economics experts doing some What If calcs to show how the repubs decisions have hurt social security, medicare and the Treasury debt - how much have the last 30 years of oil and agriculture and other industry subsidies cost us? My guess that is 30 x 100 billion in today's dollars = 3 Trillion plus interest on money that loss made us borrow and pay interest on.

I notice the disinformation on the $716 cut in Medicare. It doesn't cut benefits (too much, it cuts payments to healthcare service providers like hospitals, nursing homes, home health care, skilled nursing and annihilates Medicare Advantage and long term care.

In the CBO report on page 14 there's a summary even a journalist can understand but they still refuse to report the truth TWO years after the money was removed in the first place. The cbo report says....

Please tell me what you think is going to happen to seniors when these services are cut.
Many of us have already been able to come to logical conclusions about what will happen, while it seems that you are unable to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
When the payments for those programs get cut, the number of people treated will be cut.
Tell me, how many jobs for the health care workers will be cut because of the cuts in payments to the programs?
Do you realize that with fewer workers there will be less ability to treat patients?
Tammy, it is true that as a consequence of doctors dropping out because of obamcare and home-health, hospitals and nursing home laying people off as we speak, that that could be deemed as a 'cut in benefits' because patients will have less access to obtain the benefits. But specifically obamacare doesn't 'cut' a benefit like getting a pace-maker.......those cuts will come when the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) takes effect in 2014. Otherwise known as the 'death panel'.
But in the mean time the $716 billion cut in Medicare payments are decimating the current health care system for the elderly by taking way too much money out of the Fee for Services (FFS).
I'm half a century old, and those same tired threats about old people being kicked off the "bankrupt" government programs are older than ME.

And at a time when doctors are dropping out of Medicaid in droves at a time in a weak economy where the states or the fed can't afford it. As a former republican(still conservative) I wonder about that too. I would love for them to explain the logic behind their candidates. I remember seeing in Kentucky where they had a successful conservative person running for the house and instead they elected Rand Paul. That made no sense whatsoever. Do they not understand the importance of leadership qualities, charisma, and background - the whole package. You don't even have to have experience but you have to explain what you are going to do without it. And it is wise to not have reprimands from congress and failed marriages and affairs pulling you down. Could they just think that most Americans are lazy, dependent on the government and won't understand or check anything out? Do they think if they can just misinform a majority they will get their votes and power? There has to be some explanation. Who knows what it is. But it aint working. And their radicals are simply ruining their party and chasing everyone away! Obama 2012! And right now a Democrat in 2016! Unless the republicans somehow get a revival going in their party!

People should ask why the media doesn't inform the public that because of obamacare 15% of the hospitals and nursing across the country are at risk of shutting down. $716 billion is a big number and like Evil Knievel shattering himself and his motorcycle in his attempt to jump over Caesers Palace - it's going to leave a mark. The media has refused to report what's already happening today and what's more, what will happen tomorrow when the cuts increase exponentially year after year for the next 10.

It was reported on the local media where I live - but then, I live in the New Orleans area.
They also reported in the local media that hurricane Isaac had tar balls washing on shore again.
The seafood is still not really safe to eat in that area - even though the Obama administration claims that it is. We check where it's from before we buy it.
That's consistent with everything else. The national media doesn't report what all Americans should know. We shouldn't have to spend hours researching to find out the white house doctored a BP report and that the white house was held in contempt of court for refusing to lift the ban.
