ADEL, Iowa -- A pizzeria in this small city west of Des Moines was the setting for a celebrity visit Thursday from an actor once famous for talking about nothing.
But these days, Jason Alexander -- who played George Costanza on the TV series "Seinfeld" -- is a surrogate for Barack Obama, and he insists he has a lot on his mind.
"I am hardcore middle class. And I stepped in a puddle. And that puddle was called, 'Seinfeld,'" Alexander told about 50 supporters of the president. He said the job put him in the upper echelons of society.
"I do not want to live in that 1-percent. I don't believe in it," he continued. "I don't think our country, or any country, runs well when the 1-percent is thriving and the rest are suffering and struggling."
The supporters were gathered to listen to Alexander and then walk to a nearby elections office to cast early votes for President Obama -- just one of a number of statewide events marking the start of early voting Thursday in Iowa.
Alexander told the crowd he has a "man-crush" on Obama, who he said he has met several times.
Later, in an interview with NBC News, Alexander praised Obama as a man of "conviction" and "principle," though he allowed that such lofty considerations would be beyond the reach of the man he played on television during the 1990's.
"George would probably think he was the only savior for this entire race. He would step forward as a write-in candidate," Alexander said.
Both campaigns seem to be hoping their supporters will step forward, too -- and stick to the script.
In downtown Des Moines earlier Thursday, officials said foot traffic at the elections office had reached about 250 people by late morning -- more than double the first day of early voting in 2008.
"This was by far the busiest opening day we’ve had in the ten years I’ve been in the office," said Jamie Fitzgerald, the commissioner of elections in Polk County.
An Obama campaign volunteer waiting to vote there, Kathy Stuart, said the campaign made a push to gather supporters.
"They were trying to get people to come to breakfast, and then come to vote early," she said. "They were really interested in getting as many voters to the polls as possible."
Iowa Republicans also threw events Thursday focused on early voting.
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas rallied Mitt Romney supporters in Cedar Rapids, and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad held a conference call with volunteers Thursday evening.

Whenever things go wrong, we look for a culprit; the Jews served the Germans in this way after WWI, as we use the wealthy to blame for our recession. Yes, they have bucks, but even their raise in taxes wouldn't solve our problems. Everyone should pay the same amount in taxes, all things being equal, like ten percent. Meanwhile, while we're struggling with the deficit, why not offer the wealthy a one time payment to solve it, dividing the deficit among the top millionaires in the country; and then let them be tax free for the rest of their lifetimes.
Thank you Jason Alexander I would not want to live in that top 1% whiles the rest of the country is suffering as well. Please, recruit more people to the polls. It is not right that Republicans are willing to cut many social programs that people depend on and he wants to give the rich a tax break. Thank you for understanding that our society needs a middle class to thrive.

As for Jason Alexander not wanting to live in the 1%, perhaps the next time he gets paid to pretend to be something, he should direct all of his compensation to a Food Bank or the IRS. ALL of it.

This isn't "Seinfeld"! This is today in the ole USA. Man-up and acknowledge that this is one of the best demagogic politicians to inhabit our whitehouse; but, also, one of the most incompetent leaders to have inhabited same whitehouse. Form should always follow function.........what we're dealing with here is a dysfunctional presidency.
George aka Jason should just stick to acting because he couldn't pick a good candidate if that candidate came up and bit him in the butt and if he hates being in the 1% so badly can donate 100% of what he makes and has to charity and go live in a card board box.!
Two Observations:
1. That's great that Jason Alexander is supporting Obama; good for him. It's a nice distraction from issues when we put up a famous face to talk for someone. Notice how many of the comments on here are simply reminiscing about Seinfeld instead of something important.
2. People seem to forget that Obama is part of the 1%. According to the IRS, in 2009 a 1 percenter made had to make about $344,000. That same year Obama made $5,623,690.
what a bunch of hypocrites, these supporters like Jason Alexander, there has never been a president that has given the 1% hundreds of billions of dollars until Obama, he gave the stimulus package saying that helping the industry was saving jobs, when in fact the opposite happened, off-shoring of GM auto's, bankruptcy of solar giants, that have given technology to China, these self proclaimed patriotic Hollywood actors, that support Obama are great at spewing lines but the facts these Hollywood's people live in gated communities and drive cars with darkened windows they don't want or wish to associate with the 99%, or else they would be honest about who's driving the ship and giving away all the goods, we need a leader Romney has lead a company to wealth and a future, what has Obama done he has spent 3 times more then bush, and has blamed every event on bush he is killing the future but these hypocrites don't care much about a future anyway, they seem to be aimed on only today, and leave the crumbs for the peasants,

Well maybe when same sex marriage gets approved, he can convince Obama to divorce Michelle and marry him. Then he can get it in the rear, like the rest of the Country has, for the last four years.
Thank you Jason for pointing out what has been obvious to many of us for the last five years or more. You, Obama, and many of your democrat peers are all 1 percenters who acquired your wealth easily or as you said "stepped in a puddle". You didn't put your heart and soul, not sole, into a business for years only to have a political party and it's followers demonize you and attempt to take it all away from you through the legislative process.
While I feel for you that you are too rich, I can offer you a simple solution. You could write a check to the U.S. Treasury for all you're worth except $2,000,000. The royalties you collect for your previous work as well. That $2,000,000 would still leave you in the 1%, but with that as your only retirement income I doubt you would be travelling around the country putting in your pompous 2 cents worth in when it is not appreciated.
So he is a third string actor hawking for a second string prez. They both need to get real jobs and get out of th espotlight. We REALLY need obama to get off the gov't tit........let him go find a real job and let the politics and leadership to real men.
Too bad the alternative isnt head and shoulders better. Hewill be a slight improvement...and at least he will be somewhat more trustable than the curren potus..........but the nation as a whole needs to field better candidates in four years.
I cannot believe how ignorant movie stars are. They get out there urging people to vote for Obama and talk about not wanting to be in the 1%. If they do not want their money there are plenty of people in need that could use it. Do they have any idea how many people in America have lost their jobs in recent years? Do they have a clue how many hungry people there are in America? Since the beginning of time people that have more; want more and actors are no different. If money doesn't mean anything to them why do they ask for so much to act in some stupid movie?
To save America, people better wake up and see what kind of president Obama has been; people with any sense will vote for Romney/Ryan in 2012.
