Inside the Boiler Room: Debate expectations

With less than a week to go before the first presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro explain that because of the current campaign narrative and trailing poll numbers, Romney has more at stake going into the debate.

Thanks to Don't_Carry_It_All and Frank "Grimey" Grimes for the questions.

Congrats to DCIA & Grimey for having your question(s) selected!

What I'm having a hard time understanding is how so many people are claiming Willard is a strong debater.

Anyone who starts out answering a quested posed to them with; "I don't know... but..." isn't very effective if you ask me.

Buy hey, we can chalk it up to yet another flaw in the long list of Wiley Old Willard's character!

What I'm having a hard time understanding is how so many people are claiming Hussein is a strong debater. Sure, he's a good orator when he has PREPARED ANSWERS. We'll see how the moderators let him get away with his usual non-answers.

But, hey, we can chalk it up to yet another long list of softball questions for Hussein, the LEAST vetted president EVER.

God, I love it when people like Oscar repeat the "teabagger" nonsense of his President only being good with prepared remarks.

You keep on believing that Oscar.

Oscar - President Obama has never had the questions "soft balled." He is always tested in the debates - as it should be. Romney on the other hand hasn't been. It will definitely be interesting.

Oh, and "never" is such an absolute term. Just sayin....

Mark and Domenico -- Thanks for answering our questions. Can't wait for the debates. I'm with you in that Romney has more at stake in this first debate. It will be interesting to see how he answers those questions on the social issues. Will he try to appeal to the moderates in the Party? We shall see. Excellent analysis guys, appreciate it!

Congrats Grimey!

Feisty, the game at this point is managing expectations. These debates aren't debates - merely opportunities to regurgitate the same talking points the candidates have been using for a while. So there's no winning or losing against your opponent. You only win or lose by surpassing or failing to meet your own expectations. If you successfully talk down Romney's debating skills, you are giving him a lower bar to jump, and thus a chance to win.

The debates loom huge to the Romney camp because he is trailing President Obama and his campaign managers are starting to become deeply concerned (and by concerned I mean panicked). This will be a do-or-die opportunity for Mitt and he will pull out all the stops. I'm sure his handlers are advising him to stick to the game plan and to avoid any extemporaneous comments that can, and will, backfire on him.

"I'll tell you what, ten thousand dollars? $10,000.00 bet? —Mitt Romney, attempting to make a wager with Rick Perry during a Republican presidential debate to settle a disagreement about health care (December 2011)

"I'm Mitt Romney and, yes Wolf, that is my first name." —Mitt Romney, at the beginning of a November 2011 Republican presidential debate, getting his own name wrong (his first name is ''Willard,'' and his middle name is "Milton" or, as he seems to prefer, ''Mitt'')

More lies from Obama. Not Publish by Media Matters or the media bias NBC and affiliates.

The government cut its calculation of U.S. growth in the second quarter to 1.3% from 1.7% in its third and final review, citing less consumer spending and business investment than previously estimated. Consumer spending rose 1.5% in the previous quarter instead of 1.7% as initially forecast. And business investment, excluding residential housing, was revised down to a 3.6% increase from 4.2%. The government also said corporate profits climbed $21.8 billion in the second quarter, compared to a $53.0 billion decline in the first quarter. The economy grew at a 2.0% pace in the first three months of the year. We are moving BACKWARDS> Obamalies

Obama has nothing to bring to a debate other than cheap attack and lies.

It's been established that if we fact check ol' Willard when he says his own name we will catch him in a lie. How will the fact checkers have time to examine President Obama's assertions when they are chasing everything Mitt says to determine whether it is a lie, a damned lie, or a good old-fashioned whopper?

Romney has put a lot of time in to his debate preparation, but you have to wonder if any part of that really sunk in. The problem is still the same, Romney has no core set of beliefs that he is standing behind. You can see it when he said one thing to interviewers and turned around and said the exact opposite to the crowd small group of supporters who would come to hear him speak.

Whether it is talking about immigration reform, abortion, health care reform, it does not matter, Romney can't seem to say the same thing two times in a row.

You just have to know the Romney campaign team is going to be working harder than the fact checkers during the debate. There is going to be so much clarification of what the candidate JUST SAID that the campaign team will be on the air for longer than the debate itself.

The fun part will be when Romney says one thing and in the very next sentence says the exact opposite. If the moderator does not call Romney on that, you know that President Obama won't let the BS stink up the debate for long.

In each debate, there are very good reporters who have gotten pretty tired of hearing the same old BS coming out. They have learned the talking points and won't let the candidates get away with them. They will push to get some real answers.

For Mitt, the debate is more about style. With his Frank Luntz tested lines and his personality implant - Mitt will make Obama out to be 'the monster under the stairs'.

What they fail to realize is that everyone is going to say "oo, just tell it to call you Billie!..." hal halbrook in Creepshow and laugh when the monster goes to work. The monster is a master.

Debate expectations? Realistically, Obama is a dynamic public speaker who should have no problem beating Romney in a live debate.

But, I get the feeling he and his people really didn't want to be doing this against Mitt Romney.

No sitting President wants to put his opponent on the stage with him. It elevates the person to an equal standing.

Prior to the joint RNC/DNC commission on presidential debates, the parties used to have regular disputes about many of the points in debates (format, location, date, moderator, etc.)

Now, only viable candidates, those polling 15% or more in 5 different weeks, will be invited to debate. I wonder what will happen if Romney keeps dropping in the polls.

DCIA and Grimey. Good question, congratulations for being selected.

Mark and Domenico: Romney has almost set himself an impossible task. He is going into this debate STILL refusing to be specific about what his policies will be. If he continues to try to obfuscate, it just seems to me that it is going to make it harder for him to look, both Presidential and like a serious candidate. Add to that, Romney gets testy fast if he feels like he is being slighted or bested in a contest like this.

On the other hand, President Obama needs to see this as a moment where the pressure is on, and time to put it to bed. He does better under pressure, and if the current polling is making him feel secure, it might drag down his own prospects.

But, thanks for the information, I finally was able to get one of your videos to play.

Sorry, guys, this analysis wasnt very good. First of all, while saying in passing that there is pressure on Obama in the debates, you spent the entire time picking Romney apart, and as usual, giving Obama the NBC free pass.

Second, saying Romney must have a knockout blow in the first debates is an impossible standard.....even the famous Reagan knockout blows in debates were not necessarily considered knockout blows at the time..

So, as was stated in a Politico blog, the first debate story is already written:

"Both candidates landed some punches, but no knockout blow for Romney"..

Feeding the liberal media frenzy that the election is over.

Romney has 3 debates to go after Obama...

        The election isnt over.

Sorry, Bob, I disagree. Romney has done far too much damage to himself recently, the slide is has started, and the public view is starting to harden against him.

I really believe this first debate is high stakes for Romney. If he doesn't pull it out as a clear win, his money is going to start to dry up.

        The election isnt over.

Bob in Va., I've been saying that for a few months, now.

You also hit the nail right on the head when you picked apart the media's (FIRST READ's) attempt to raise the bar of expectations for Romney, while lowering it for Obama.

The fact of the matter is that Obama MUST come up with an economic plan, not just hollow promises about "recovery," and he must demonstrate that he alone can implement that plan and make it work.

What's more he needs to do it in the first debate.

He may be leading in the polls now.

But, the crowds at his teleprompter events have been fewer in numbers, and much less enthusiastic than they were in 2008.

His lead is only an average of four (4) points, nationally. (or, 1% point outside of the normal margin for error.) John Kerry was down by almost 10 points at this juncture in 2004, and came back to within 3 points by election day. The same kind of comeback would put Romney up by 3 points. (Remember the electoral win by George Bush in 2000......watch Ohio AND Florida AGAIN this year!)

Tuesday is pretty big for BOTH candidates. But as I see it now, most folks think Romney can't hang in there against Obama's hard hitting "rhetoric."

But, as I said before, I think he and his people would rather have been doing this against a Rick Perry or a Rick Santorum. Compared against those two, Romney is much more "moderate" and that might make it more difficult for Obama to "land a clean punch" on him. Especially when it comes to health-care, in lieu of Romney's own initiative as Governor of Massachusetts.

Obama, on the other hand, may have left himself open for a few "jabs" with his lack of leadership regarding the bombing of the consulate in Libya. It was bad P.R. for his people to come out and say that it wasn't an organized/premeditated attack. We'll see if Romney can gain some traction there.

All in all, I look forward to it. It's going to be an exciting night that will give us a better comparison and contrast of both candidates alongside of each other.

        DEMOCRATS FOR ROMNEY!

retired msgt :give me one answer to this question: If obama is so damned concerned with the middle-class and the poor, why will he as he said, "retire to Hi' and be living in a 36million dollar home with a net income of say 15 million, If he truely believes what he says, again about the middle class and the poor, then why can't he live in a two bedroom apartment? or is that just a toiletful of s--t he has been handing out to those who believe in him. I mean. you libs have been complaining about romney and the 1% friends.

I was hoping that Obama would finally answer some questions about what happened at our embassy in Libya on September 11th. Why have we been mislead? Why FBI agents have not yet arrived in Benghazi.

No it hasn't. Obama went to Saudi Arabia and promised them we wouldn't take military action against them. As if to say our response to 911 was wrong, and that removing Hussein from power was also wrong. But, he didn't extract any promises from any arab/islamic nation not to allow the fomentation of international terrorist groups hostile to the U.S. within their borders.

You don't have to say a thing "word for word" in order for people to read between the lines and understand your meaning.

Obama DID apologize, and in the world we live in after 911, anyone who supports him should be ashamed of themselves.

Here's part of the 2002 debate Mark and Domenico mentioned, where Mitt Romney vehemently defends his pro-choice stance and his vow to "preserve and protect a woman's right to choose". Wonder what ever happened to that Mitt Romney?

These debates should be interesting. It will be funny when Odumbo will not even remember his name, that's why Carney will write on the back of his hand! He still believes that there are 57 states , because he says he campaigned in all of them last election! It will be hilarious when he starts naming all of them. We all know that smokin' Joe is out there somewhere in time babbling and running in circles, doing nothing! When Ryan gets through with him., old joe will be ready to be launched into space to try to find himself.

President Obama is going tear the GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" to shreds on all issues. The GOP/RNC "Romulain" has NO one message for America, and has NO policy of his own in all areas. President Obama is a very good debater, and he has the creative ability to stay on task. The President is able to speak clearly, and he stands strongly in his beliefs. President Obama is a fighter for those that are unable to defend themselves, and is excited about representing all Americans. Now the GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" does not have any of these qualities, and he will "Flip-Flop" all over the debate stage. One wonders if the GOP/RNC "Bain Trained" Speculator will want to bet the President during the debates? The GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" does not have policies of his own, and he looks to "Richie Rich" Ryan for everything. Which is just pure evil in itself! The GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" does NOT believe in himself. So how can our citizens believe in him. The GOP/RNC "Romulian" has NO personality, no social skills, and no ability to show 'Empathy' towards 47% of our citizens that have no sense of responsibility. On Foreign Policy issues? The GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" will be using the same policies of the "Chump-Change-Cheney" Foreign Policy Team. Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! The Party Of NO has got to GO!

In a video made public today, but recorded sometime in the summer of 1985, Mitt Romney explains in frank terms how his then newly-minted private equity firm planned on making money.

"Bain Capital is an investment partnership which was formed to invest in startup companies and ongoing companies, then to take an active hand in managing them and hopefully, five to eight years later, to harvest them at a significant profit," Romney tells employees of Bain & Company, the consulting firm that spawned the new venture.

"If you're head of a large equity firm or hedge fund, your job is to make money. It's not to create jobs. It's not even to create successful businesses. It's to make sure you're maximizing returns for your investor," President Obama said during an interview with CBS in July, seeking to create a divide between Romney's private success and his potential to manage public economic policy.

Romney faced similar criticism during the Republican primary debates, when Texas Gov. Rick Perry accused Bain of engaging in "vulture capitalism."

I guess he means Obama has not insulted Great Britain (Mitt the Twit!), has

We voters do not want a repeat of what happened in the year 2000. These reports that republicans have manufactured millions of fake ballots to be sneaked in and be mixed with genuine ones must be thoroughly investigated before it is too late. Republicans are now quick at terminating the contracts of the firms they hired to do exactly that and pretending that they were not aware that these firms were faking names and addresses to fill and submitt fake ballots to be counted among the genuine ones.

These discoveries in Florida and other places are just but a tip of an iceberg. There are alot of fraudulent activities being conducted by some groups of people to ensure that fake ballots are sneaked in especially during early voting and through fake absentee ballots. Thousands of Republican absentee ballots are fake as it has been discovered in Florida and thorough investigation must be speedily conducted. There have been plans to make some people with homes in more that one state vote in all those states.

Nowonder Republicans are still talking of winning even when they are badly trailing in the polls.

After the debate, and after the election, President Obama should make sure to thank Mitt Romney for all the republican, undecided and independent votes he will undoubtedly receive after that most disastrous 47% diatribe. I do believe that was the turning point in this election. Everything since has just reaffirmed what he stated as his true opinion of what he thinks of the American people. We are nothing more to him than a commodity to be used and then discarded.

The Romney Campaign has just posted a new slogan for Mitt:

"I am NOT as big a crook or liar as Nixon!"

Romney could win if he got into the nitty gritty details of tax reform and differnent changes he would make as the president...... but you know darn well he won't. He is not capable of depth and thinks you just vote for him because obama is bad.. .It won't fly mitty ---people need to know what you want to do and how your gonna do it.........Unlike obama against mccain who was a devout lefty and had a bimbo as vp. They couldn't handle an empty head like palin...and also a lot of folks protested the war of convenience in iraqi so obama got the nod. Now, they know what he is about and love the extra trillion the govt spends per year on perks. ..... .... It will be fluff on both sides and both side will claim victory. Its not enough to turn the tables.

Due to all of the fraud and corruption coming out of the Odumbo camp., I'm sure we will see millions of voters coming out of their graves, to vote for this useless do-nothing. NO, ODUMBO, we do not need any photo ID., do we? Now it looks like 90% of your votes will be coming from the grave. You are a disgrace!

It's people like you that helped coin the phrase "dumb American". You pay no attention to what is going on around you. You live inside your head and actually think that what you believe is true. I doubt that you've ever read a book and it appears your news source is Rush Limbaugh.

My expectation is that Obama will clean Bishop Romney's clock tomorrow sending the Bishop out of Colorado with his tail firmly planted between his legs. The Republicans will recoil, stay away from the Bishop and try to salvage a smidgen of this election that Romney has completely destroyed.
