Romney uses GDP downgrade to hammer Obama on economy

Republican U.S. presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney speaks during a Veterans for Romney event at American Legion Post 176 September 27, 2012 in Springfield, Virginia.

Updated 3:05 p.m. - SPRINGFIELD, VA -- Mitt Romney seized upon a report revising economic growth in the second quarter downward as his latest piece of evidence in his ongoing effort to cast President Barack Obama's policies as ineffective at boosting the economy.

“We have to have a strong economy. Right now, Russia’s economy is growing at about 4 percent per year. That’s their GDP growth. Ours was just revised last quarter down to 1.3 percent per year -- about a quarter or a fifth the rate of Russia’s," Romney said. "This is a real challenge for us. And this is not just one quarter. This has been going on now for years."

"Our economy needs to be reinvigorated," Romney continued before an audience of some 300 veterans at an American Legion hall in suburban Washington. "And the president has laid out his plan. It’s a continuation of the old plan. We can’t afford four more years of the last four years, all right?”

Slideshow: On the campaign trail

Speaking before an audience that is especially attentive to military spending for its impact on the local economy, Romney highlighted the danger posed by planned defense cuts called for in the bipartisan budget deal.

"The White House proposed the sequestration, a kind of gun-to-your-head opportunity, which is if Congress couldn't get the job done properly and the president couldn't lead them, why they would make devastating cuts to our military," Romney said. "The impact will be immediate, and significant right here in Virginia: 136,000 jobs will be lost in Virginia as a result of this move."

For the second day in a row, Romney and Obama squared off in the same critical swing state. Yesterday, they held dueling rallies in Ohio, and as Romney wrapped up his remarks, the president was preparing for his own rally downstate.

The Republican nominee, trailing in most polls of Old Dominion voters, kept his message focused on the few areas where he retains strength, particularly on dealing with the national debt and the deficit, on which he hammered the president again today, while attempting to present the complex problems posed by a burgeoning debt in understandable prose.

"[President Obama's] plan also calls for trillion dollar deficits," Romney said. "Recognize: trillion dollar deficits. That debt is owned by somebody. Someone holds that. That puts America in a position of economic risk, fiscal risk."

For the third straight day, both Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama will be campaigning in the same state. The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd reports.

"Even with the interest rates real low, we spend more on interest as taxpayers, paying the government debt than we spend on housing agriculture, education and transportation combined," Romney continued. "Its huge! And its going to get a lot bigger. Particularly if every year we add another trillion dollars to the deficit. "

Obama's campaign, which today began airing a new advertisement highlighting Romney's surreptitiously recorded comments at a fundraiser about 47 percent of Americans he said did not pay taxes and thought of themselves as "victims," issued a statement responding to Romney's remarks which seemed designed to draw attention back to the damaging video.

“Mitt Romney would like Virginians to forget how he disdainfully wrote off half of all Americans, including veterans and active duty members, at a fundraiser with high-dollar donors," said spokeswoman Lis Smith. "[Romney's] policies would be disastrous for America’s military, military families, and veterans and we can’t afford them.”

“On the day we learned that American businesses have created 5.1 million private sector jobs over the last 30 months – 453,000 more than originally thought – Mitt Romney’s desperately cherry picking the data to fit his false narrative," added Obama spokesman Danny Kanner. "The truth is that he opposed the President’s jobs proposal, which could still create as many as 1 million additional jobs, and instead proposed plans that independent economists say would slow the recovery and actually cost us nearly a million jobs."

Well, that explains why there were chairs stacked by the dozens!

A whopping 300 attendees? Wiley Old Willard sure knows how to pack a room!

Then again, offering a free lunch buffet is always a crowd favorite with the "moochers"!

Jersy Girl ...

Romney will improve the economy by doing exactly WHAT????? He hasn't stated any plans and wants to go back to the trickle down failure economic plan of old.

The President has a plan and while it might not be moving as quickly as many would like, it would be moving a helluva lot faster if Congress were to get off their sorry butts and support him.

I donn't know about you, but I am fed up with having so much tax monies and BENEFITS go towards a bunch of people that were elected to do a job that have flat out refused to do so.

Well, let's see.....

"President Barack Obama spoke to a large crowd gathered at Farm Bureau Live in Virginia Beach Thursday. Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) introduced the president at the campaign event.

Air Force One departed from Andrews Air Force Base around 10:45 a.m. and landed at Naval Air Station Oceana shortly before 11:30 a.m.

Virginia Beach District Fire Chief David Hutcheson estimates 7,000 people are in attendance at the Farm Bureau Live event. Attendees of the campaign rally began lining up as early as 6 a.m. to secure their seats to see President Obama."

Republicans have been running their mouths off for the last three years about how bad the economy is - spreading doom and gloom in order to suppress consumer confidence. Every economist I've ever read has said economic recovery depends on psychological factors - when people have confidence, they spend more, businesses hire, etc. The Republican Party's strategy, after their polices tanked the economy in 2008, was to slow our recovery so they could win back the Presidency and do it all over again!

You really aren't too bright are you?

Have you ever heard of Google?

The rally was meant to show that "Coal Country Stands With Mitt," as the campaign signs touted. But it turns out that the owners of the mine told workers they were required to attend the rally, reports The Plain Dealer (via Grist):

The Pepper Pike company that owns the Century Mine told workers that attending the Aug. 14 Romney event would be both mandatory and unpaid, a top company official said Monday morning in a West Virginia radio interview.

A group of employees who feared they'd be fired if they didn't attend the campaign rally in Beallsville, Ohio, complained about it to WWVA radio station talk show host David Blomquist. Blomquist discussed their beefs on the air Monday with Murray Energy Chief Financial Officer Rob Moore.

Moore told Blomquist that managers "communicated to our workforce that the attendance at the Romney event was mandatory, but no one was forced to attend." He said the company did not penalize no-shows.

The radio interview is here. Moore also confirms that they bused workers to the rally, and that the mine was shut down for the day (probably because so many workers would be at this "mandatory" rally). So even if workers wanted to, you know, work, they'd be forced to take a day off without pay anyway.

Murray Energy CEO Robert Murray is a major Romney supporter, and the company's PAC has given $10,000 to the Republican presidential candidate. This, according to Murray, is because he worries about his workers whose "lives have been destroyed by the policies of Barack Obama."

http://www.motherjones.com/

Attendance was mandatory but NO one was forced to attend? WTF?

This @!$%# can donate $10K to Team Willard and can't pay his workers for the day?

Typical repulsive Republican't!

WASHINGTON -- Employees of a major coal industry donor to Republican causes have raised complaints about their participation in an event earlier this month organized for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney in the crucial swing state of Ohio.

Several miners at Murray Energy’s Century coal mine in Beallsville, Ohio, contacted a nearby morning talk radio host, David Blomquist, over the last two weeks to say that they were forced to attend an Aug. 14 rally for Romney at the mine. Murray closed the mine the day of the rally, saying it was necessary for security and safety, then docked miners the day's pay.

Mitt ought to run on his record of creating jobs in Massachusetts. He avoided raising taxes although he increased almost every user "fee". He cut aid to colleges and schools, cut aid to local governments, cut job training programs, and cut trade assistance. Austerity at its finest.

    How did he do?

Well, when he became Governor, Massachusetts was 37th in job growth out of 50 states. A great opportunity for this proven job creator to work his magic.

But, unfortunately, when Mitt's term of 4 years was over, Massachusetts ranked 47th in job creation, median income was down, and the state's growth rate was 0.9% (national rate was 5%).

Mitt failed at creating jobs in Massachusetts.

The GDp growth is actually 4%, not 1.3%.

Comsumer spending is 70% of the GDP. Most lower-middle class people spend most of the income buying groceries, food, and other necessities, boosting demand. But the extreme gap between the rich and poor have destroyed the middle class and hurt the economy, shaving 1.5% growth from the GDP - thus actual GDP is 3%

Then our biggest buyers of US goods and services have been in deep trouble in the last few years. Japan hit by nucler disaster, EU hit by a nagging debt crisis. This lack of purchases from them shave off another .5 to 1%. If our most important trading partners of Japan and EU are normal economically, then our GDP growth would be 4% - that's prosperity.

    9/11 First Reponder bill

    S. 3457 (Veterans Jobs Corps Act of 2012 )

    S. 3412 (Middle Class Tax Cut Act )

    S. 3364 (Bring Jobs Home Act )

    S. 2237 (Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act )

H.R. 4348 (MAP-21 ) Amended during conference: "An act to authorize funds for Federal-aid highways, highway safety programs, and transit programs, and for other purposes."

    H.R. 847 (James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 )

    S. 3985 (Emergency Senior Citizens Relief Act of 2010 )

    S. 3816 (Creating American Jobs and Ending Offshoring Act )

Thanks for pointing out that the Republican party is all about obstruction and never about the 98% of population and the economy.

1.56 - Nice post, Bayllie. This list needs to be posted, and forwarded as often as possible.

unfortunately, it's a quick list that I put together in a few minutes before I had to leave - there are so many more examples of the Republican obstructionism that hurt most of us - and that's what's unfortunate.

Actually Jim, the Repubs/TPers in the 2010 Congressional election were NOT voted in to be obstructionist, they ran on the platform of JOBS, JOBS, JOBS....and have yet to put forth an ACTUAL jobs bill. Sure, they have tried to pass bills with Jobs in the title, but when you read them they are either attempts to repeal the AHA, attempts to remove regulatory agencies or to Defund Regulatory agencies....nothing actually having to do with creating JOBS.

On top of that, they have been refusing to allow a vote on the existing Dem jobs bills and stimulus, which REALLY WOULD create jobs, first by hiring people to work on the badly deteriorating infrastructure.

So, no, they were NOT voted in to stop President Obama's policies, they were voted in on their false platform to create JOBS. And, by the Repub logic, if they have not been doing their JOBS, then they need to be replaced, Right??

WHERE ARE THE JOBS THAT WERE PROMISED BY THOSE ON THE RIGHT....are we to think that they were lying the entire time....sure looks like it, which is why a great many of the Repubs in Congress are going to feel the pain of defeat right along with Romney!

It's been well documented the turn outs at Obama events this year have been much smaller, much less enthusiastic than in 08.

Yeah, but we don't hear about anyone having to force attendance at an Obama rally. Unlike Mitt:

The ad, filmed Aug. 14, shows miners in hard-hats with coal dust on their faces, standing behind Romney at a mine in Beallsville, owned by Murray Energy. Its president, Robert Murray, is a Romney backer and Republican Party donor both as an individual and through his company.

Miners told David Blomquist, a talk radio host for WWVA in the area, the mine was shut down during the campaign event and their pay was docked but they were also required to attend the event.

A Murray executive, Robert Moore, told Blomquist, "Attendance was mandatory but no one was forced to attend the event."

Romney’s speech was the same pitch he makes to every group: the economy is stagnant, and I will grow it. You could do a find-and-replace for “Latinos,” “women,” “African-Americans” or, for that matter, “Inuits” and his speech would be the same.

Bain Capital is an investment partnership which was formed to invest in startup companies and ongoing companies, then to take an active hand in managing them and hopefully, five to eight years later, to harvest them at a significant profit," Romney tells employees of Bain & Company, the consulting firm that spawned the new venture.

Romney wants to be president so he can harvest taxpayers.

When's the last time since 1929 that a Republican president presided over four straight years of four per cent GDP growth? The answer is simple: Never. When's the last time a Democrat did it? Bill Clinton, from 1997 through 2000. Democrats also put together four or more years of four per cent + GDP under Kennedy/Johnson (five years: 1962-66) and FDR - twice. First was a four-year stretch from 1934-1937, followed by a six-year stretch, 1939 to 1944.

Larry, that's ridiculous ... you cannot "reduce taxes" on those who are not paying any.

Oh, and Matthew @2.37 ..... your post is in the running for the most asinine of the day. The "progressive" garbage that a person votes AGAINST THEIR SELF-INTEREST is merely a liberal concept to mask their haughty arrogance. The first problem with libs is they have this ill-conceived notion they are smarter than everyone else. So they consider themselves to be better judges of what is good for an individual .... than the individual is for himself ! This is basically a DELUSION OF ADEQUACY !!

My college-educated brother works for an architectural and engineering firm in Florida that has a severe lack of work. His pay and that of all employees was/were cut in half ... in hopes of surviving. They were waiting on all those SHOVEL-READY JOBS that Obama promised .... but alas, that was just bull$hit from Obama !!!!!!!

Oh, and GENIUS American Girl .... I pay significant taxes and am not one of the 1% either, so I am part of the middle class Obama seeks to destroy with higher taxes, higher energy costs and higher health care costs as mandated by Obamacare ! You'll just have to "read the bill to see what's in it" ... the many, SNEAKY little taxes of Obamacare ... eliminating medical deductions on the middle class !

What is even MORE amazing Job1 is that you libbies have stuck with Obama even after he has demonstrated his total financial incompetence !!!

      What financial incompetence?

...the numbers for Bush's last three months. Between October and November, 597,000 jobs were lost; between November and December, 681,000 were lost; and between December and January, 741,000 were lost.

April 2012 marks the 26th straight month of gains in private-sector employment, for a total of 4.2 million private-sector jobs.

      DJIA Dec 26, 2008 8515
      DJIA Sep 27, 2012 13485

Dec 29, 2008 (Bloomberg) U.S. corporate earnings fell for a sixth-straight quarter, the longest streak in at least 20 years, as consumer spending on automobiles, homes and retailers collapsed.

May 11, 2012 Fortune magazine released its ranking of the 500 biggest US corporations Monday, which showed that they received a record-breaking $824 billion in combined profits in 2011, up 16 percent from 2010.

Obama was handed a pile of @!$%# by his Republican predecessor - 7.8% unemployment (and rising faster than Halliburton's profits) and GDP shrank by 9%!! I find it interesting that everyone here now is only bitching about how fast the recovery is happening, not whether we are recovering.

Bush's ending unemployment rate was 7.8% but hit 10% while still under the Bush budget which ran until Oct. 2009. The only spending Obama was responsible for the first 10 months of 2009 was his stimulus which could only make those numbers better.

        Financial incompetence anyone ?

How about $5.2 trillion added to the national debt in less than 4 years ........ and Obama has never had a budget ??????????

How about throwing $535 million at Solyndra which had already received a going-concern letter from their independent CPA auditors ????

How about the bailout of the cadillac health care plan for retired GM employees disguised as a "saving of GM" ???? You do understand, don't you, that GM filed for bankruptcy ...... ANYWAY ????? Now the U.S. is invested in GM and the stock they hold in GM is worth billions LESS !! Chrysler is now majority owned by FIAT.

Need more proof ? How about this so-called "pay their fair share" garbage for "MILLIONAIRES and BILLIONAIRES" .... that actually starts at the $200k/$250k levels and would only pay for about 8.5 days of the current, annual deficits ???? That's a big unexplained gap versus his rhetoric !!

Have you self-proclaimed "progressives" realized that is nothing but a smokescreen for the desired CLASS WARFARE to get him re-elected ? Have you ever noticed Obama does not give any numbers about how much/little revenue this will raise ???

No, I don't think Obama is financially competent and the "progressives" are drinking something much, much stronger than Kool-Aid if they do ! Obama is leading this country to the same, weak financial position that Greece and Spain currently have. In France, they want a 75% super tax on the wealthy ! This is the vision of Obama and his intended "Redistribution of the Wealth".

. . . of which less than $1 trillion was a direct result of policies championed by, and passed under President Obama. The rest are as a direct result of policies passed under the Bush administration when both Houses were held by Republican/TPs.

How about throwing $535 million at Solyndra which had already received a going-concern letter from their independent CPA auditors ????

Would this be the loan that was started under, and pushed for approval by the Bush administration? Yep, that would be the one. Also, this was only a loss from a $1 trillion program that has had many more successes.

You really need to stop listening to FAUX Noise, and Limbaugh, jimmy. The retiree's, and all of the employees of GM, and Chrysler took benefit, and pay cuts. The bankruptcy was a well managed one that allowed both companies to survive, thereby saving, literally, millions of jobs. This rather than the type that kills the company completely, lays off all of the employees, and crashes an economy . . . you know, like Romney wanted to have happen. You also need to keep up with current events, Chrysler paid off the loans, WITH INTEREST, and with the way GM is going, when the final stock owned by the US Government is sold, it is quite possible that it will actually make a profit.

Now this is just stupid, jimmy. The fair share of taxes is also coupled by reforming the tax code so that over 35,000 millionaires who currently pay no taxes, and large, profitable companies that currently pay no taxes, actually pay taxes, as well as spending cuts, and boosting the economy to generate more revenue. You obviously have a problem understanding economics, and cherry pick information to create what is essentially a lie.

Obama is leading this country to the same, weak financial position that Greece and Spain currently have. In France, they want a 75% super tax on the wealthy ! This is the vision of Obama and his intended "Redistribution of the Wealth".

This really proves how really stupid you are when it comes to economics. Trying to equate Spain, and Greece to the US is a common mistake that people who are economically clueless make. There is no comparison that can be made, especially since they do not control their own currency, nor do they control their own interest rates.

And if you want to talk about redistribution of wealth, or class warfare, let's talk about how the top 5% have enjoyed all of the gains over the last 30+ years while the bottom 95% have barely moved, stagnated, or actually lost ground (depending on where you fall in that 95%), over the same 30+ years. Or how about the way that the Romneys always talk about those who are not wealthy as 'you people', or 'those people', or 'irresponsible', or 'lazy', etc. (remember, they were talking about you too, jimmy boy).

So, jimmy boy, you might want to become more informed, and not talk about things you know nothing bout before getting all self-righteous in your posts. As it stands, you have been shown to be a rather uninformed, stupid poster.

Matthew, Houston .... Where do I start ? You have so many outright LIES weaved into your diarrhea-like diatribe it is tough to pick an appropriate starting point !

First, like all liberals, you apparently do not have the gonads to man-up and accept responsibility for Obama's incompetence. Instead, you continue to blame anyone and everyone but Obama for his malfeasance.

Second, Bush stopped the loan to Solyndra because of their problems so you cannot pin that one on someone else either. The executives of Solyndra spent "considerable time" at the White House before this loan was approved. These same executives contributed significant campaign contributions to Obama and the administration "fast-tracked" an ill-advised approval.

Third, Chrysler has NOT PAID back all the loans so you are either intentionally lying or merely demonstrating your ignorance. Severas billion in loans to the "old Chrysler" have not been repaid. Your weak assertion that the GM stock will rise to a profitable status is merely wishful thinking. Government Motors got the bailout because Obama wanted to "BUY" the union votes.

Fourth, you did absolutely NOTHING to bridge the gap between Obama's rhetoric of raising taxes on "the millionaires and billionaires" versus the reality that his plan raises taxes on those making over $200k for single and $250k for marrieds. Besides, Obamacare already has raised taxes for earned income above the $200k/$250k level for earned income and 2.8% for investment income.

So libbies like you can attempt to imply someone as "uninformed", but the truth of the matter is you libs show an amazing void on tax matters and financial reality. The last thing you want to talk about is economic reality because your lies are like water off a duck's back.

Nothing in Obama's plan does anything to reduce the deficit, which he previously promised, because Obama's philosophy is to GRROOOWWWW our federal government at every opportunity ... and the excesses and wastes of our government go unchecked, unchallenged and uncorrected. Obama wants to solidify the cycle of dependency on government and those who have an inability to see the future are all in favor of such stupidity.

It sounds like you may fall in the ranks of the highly gullible !

Jim: You call people supporting Obama gullible for believing Obama's the better choice to deal with out national debt and yet you support the man who intends to cut revenues an additional 5 trillion, increase military funding 260 billion a year and restart the space program at a cost of several hundred billion a year to solve our deficit. I'd accuse you of drinking Kool aid but clearly you're drinking something far stronger. How about tabling your hatred of Obama, actually reading Romney's plans and explain how anything he proposes would solve anything. How would cutting 500 billion a year in taxes mostly for the rich create jobs when Bush's 400 billion mostly to the rich tax cuts ended with a job creation record of 138,000 jobs per year barely better than Obama's per month record?

          #3.11 - Fri Sep 28, 2012 2:20 PM EDT

No "hatred" of Obama, but I am not surprised at your attempted distortion. Obama's debt increases speak for themselves as does his failed stimulus. The shovel-ready jobs simply WEREN'T !!!!!!!!!

We don't elect Presidents because they are "cool", because they can sing, they can dance and maybe because they consider themselves "eye candy" for the women on The View .... (please pardon me while I hurl). We elect them because they are competent in reducing unemployment ... which is STILL above 8% !

By the way, please take your garbage line of tax decreases for the rich and stow it where the sun does not shine .... you simply cannot CUT taxes on those who are not paying any !!!!!!!! The Bush tax cuts reduced taxes for ALL LEVELS of those who were paying taxes 15% down to 10%, 28% down to 25%, 39.6% down to 35% but with elimination of exemptions at higher levels of income !

But then again, that would be "an inconvenient truth" for you libs to actually admit the truth for a change ! It would counter your class warfare strategy for the gullible.

Jersey Girl 1: there have been many people who run for political office who, by most standards, could be considered "rich." More than 75% of Americans would not, by any standard, be considered rich. Unfortunately, it is very likely that 25% or more of Americans are considered poor.

Willard Mitt Romney, the son of the former governor of Michigan, who, as a child went to private preparatory schools and had the advantages associated with having a father who was once the president of what was at the time the fourth largest automobile maker in the US is very rich. Romney is rich enough that he can decide to NOT take deductions for money he GAVE AWAY which amount to more than the average American earns in 20 years.

The issue is not his wealth. It is how that wealth has warped his thinking. When talking to students about how they could get $20,000 to pay for college or starting a business, Mitt Romney suggested the students just borrow it from their parents. He had no issue making a $10,000 bet with Gov. Rick Perry. Romney just does not realize that those are the kinds of sums that most people work very hard to EARN.

When he dismisses almost half of the country as victims, he indicates that he does not care for half of the country. What the Democratic party has been saying for the last 10 years is proven as true. The GOP really is only out for the wealthy.

I did not lay one person off, if they left I didn't replace them. Most all of my employees have been with me for ten years or more. I am in retail sales, and retail sales are down. It is not just corporations who are holding on to money, it's individuals as well. Everyone is nervous about the economy. My business is an S Corp, and for those of you who are too dumb to know what they means, any profit my company makes, I take as personal income.

If they are down, then you are doing something wrong because everyone else is up . . . well, every competent businessperson's business is up.

Second, demand has not come back as much as it could have due to the Republican/TP Inc. party obstructing everything that would help raise demand that they possibly could to make President Obama look bad (see list at 1.56, above).

A whole lot of Republicans tend to "create" bad news because they are Republicans and they think their "lies" make the President look bad, but it is Republican inaction that makes Republicans look bad to me. Me embarrassing myself? Seriously? This coming from an idiot posting lies, and Republican/TP Inc. talking points (I know, that was redundant) as if they were true? Hoo boy, son, you really have been fooled.

Again, the President does not submit a budget, he only proposes a budget, and if you knew anything about parliamentary procedures, you'd know why his proposed budget was voted against by the Democrats. But that would require you to have more intelligence to understand than you have demonstrated in your posts.

Harry is Obama's henchman and his hit-man .... making an outlandish accusation against Obama's opponent that has already been proven to be a LIE !!

Really? It has? And just how was it proven to be a lie when Romney hasn't released the tax returns to disprove the claim? We're supposed to just take the word of a known, and proven liar like Romney? You really are stupid.

YOu do know that Clinton policies had more to do with the bad economy than anything GWB did, Right?

            Housing bubble come to mind?

Oh, let's just take a look at that housing bubble, shall we?

            From Wikipedia:

The U.S. subprime mortgage crisis was one of the first indicators of the late-2000s financial crisis, characterized by a rise in subprime mortgage delinquencies and foreclosures, and the resulting decline of securities backed by said mortgages.

The ratio of lower-quality subprime mortgages originated rose from the historical 8% or lower range to approximately 20% from 2004-2006

From the moment George W. Bush entered office, he was pushing low/no downpayment mortages. From a radio address to the nation in June, 2001, just six months after Bush took office:

For instance, while the rate of homeownership amongst all Americans is nearly 68 percent, the rate among African-American and Hispanic families is under 50 percent.

One particular program, the American Dream Downpayment Fund, will provide $200 million in downpayment assistance to help 130,000 low-income families buy homes.

So what is the American Dream Downpayment Fund? This fund was established by the American Dream Downpayment Act, passed by the House and Senate and signed into law by George W. Bush in 2003.

All legislation is documented on government websites. Look this one up; it is quite interesting:

American Dream Downpayment Initiative (ADDI) - signed into law on Dec 16, 2003.

            Sponsor: Sen. Wayne Allard [R-CO]

Co-sponsors: Samuel Brownback [R-KS]; Conrad Burns [R-MT]; Ben Campbell [R-CO]; Michael Crapo [R-ID]; Michael Enzi [R-WY]; Charles Hagel [R-NE]; Lisa Murkowski [R-AK]; Richard Santorum [R-PA]; Jefferson Sessions [R-AL]

Note that there was not one Democrat co-sponsoring this bill. The bill was sponsored by a Republican, co-sponsored only by other Republicans, passed by a Republican majority in the House and Senate and signed into law by a Republican president.

The biggest provision in this bill was to reduce downpayment requiremenst for any GSE (Fannie Mae, Freddi Mac and FHA) loan to 3%.

From a bipartisan Congressional report by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on the subprime mortgage crisis released in 2009 (summary here):

Lower down-payments led to housing prices that outpaced income growth: Once government-sponsored efforts to decrease down payments spread to the wider market, home prices became increasingly untethered from any kind of demand limited by borrowers’ ability to pay. Instead, borrowers could just make smaller down payments and take on higher debt, allowing home prices to continue their unrestrained rise. (p. 11)

The Government Sponsored Enterprises led the way into the housing crisis: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were leaders in risky mortgage lending. According to an analysis presented to the Committee, between 2002 and 2007, Fannie and Freddie purchased $1.9 trillion of mortgages made to borrowers with credit scores below 660, one of the definitions of “subprime” used by federal banking regulators. This represents over 54% of all such mortgages purchased during those years. (p.24)

Interesting timing, isn't it? All of this happened on Bush's watch, not Clinton's. Make no mistake - this was a Republican housing bubble and a Republican recession!

“We have to have a strong economy. Right now, Russia’s economy is growing at about 4 percent per year. That’s their GDP growth. Ours was just revised last quarter down to 1.3 percent per year -- about a quarter or a fifth the rate of Russia’s,"

Romney, with math like this, we really need to see your taxes.

As for the economy, thanks for pointing out that America is on the right track with Obama's clean energy resulting in lots more fracking. Fracking that is creating American jobs and thanks to several natural gas pipelines coming on, it is expected to turn the US into an energy exporter, just like Russia.

That is, unless we decide to change from Obama's plan of supporting US natural gas and instead turn to Republicans support of oil from Canada.

Like income for ordinary people it's easier to pay bills when you have higher revenue. When you have a debt of 16 trillion lowering taxes will never allow you to pay that debt off. Yes you need to reduce spending but across the board. Republicans will only support cuts to social program spending and never military or pet projects. Nothing can be a sacred cow. If you have a family income of 100K and 50K in debts most reasonable people would think it a bad time to give up that second job and 1/3 your income like cutting taxes by 30% would be.

Federal revenue comes primarily from taxes, including income, Social Security and excise taxes. This revenue total is projected to claim just 14.9 percent of gross domestic product in 2009. The last time federal revenue crept below 15 percent of G.D.P. was in 1950, when it fell to 14.4 percent. Since that time, federal revenue has averaged about 17.9 percent of the economy.

As Roberton Williams wrote on the TaxVox blog on Monday, federal revenue is especially low this year for three main reasons: tax cuts in this year's economic stimulus, the collapse of the economy (which means people and companies earn less money, and therefore pay less in taxes), and the Bush tax cuts from earlier this decade.

The US GDP declined because of the drought. It's not the President's fault, who is not in control of the weather. The question is what is the response to the problem? The GOP Congress quit without passing the Agriculture bill that had measures to help farmers deal with the consequences of the drought. The Republicans believe in the divine right of the president to control everything including the weather; the Democrats believe in joining together to meet any crisis that affects our well being.

Most intelligent Americans realise that our national budget runs through October. So in 2009 we continued to lose jobs while the country was still under Bush's budget. Funny we had to totally get the stink of Bush gone before we could begin growing jobs again. The 2 worst years of the recession were 2008 and 2009. Other than Obama's stimulus he had nothing to do with accumulated debt or policies for 10 months in 2009. And the stimulus helped save millions of jobs. Bush's stimulus went mostly to banks and financial institutions. Defend that.

GDP downgrade? Well, after years trying to get people back to work, that's an indicator that lags behind the economy.

However, recent CNN report will eviscerate Romnoids jobs creator argument because In the year following Obama's inauguration, the U.S. economy lost about 4.3 million jobs. But new figures released Thursday show 4.4 million jobs have been added back since then.

The GOP has been trying to sabotage the economy for 4 years! They've made MILLIONS of families suffer!! They met on Obama Inauguration Day evening, over a steak dinner no less and planned strategy. At a time of crisis, with the country’s entire financial system near collapse, with the economy collapsing, with the stock market collapsing, with unemployment skyrocketing, with people losing their jobs and retirement money, the GOP announced that THEIR #1 priority was to assure that Pres. Obama was a 1 term president!!!

They abandoned their duty to the American people for the sake of sabotaging a new president taking office in the midst of the greatest crisis since 1929.--- for the sake of political gain! I don’t know if that fit’s the legal definition of treason, but it sure smells like it and is at the very least, un-American and unpatriotic. Never before have I seen a political party abandon it’s country in time of crisis! NEVER!

They trying to drive the economy back into recession before election day. But the economy kept growing, however slowly, DESPITE what the Republicans did or failed to do!

They accuse the DEMs of doing what they themselves did! The economy crashed under bush and the GOP policies! The other day, Romney bashed Pres. Obama about the debt. Yet, the fact is, if the last 3 GOP presidents had NOT signed TWENTY deficit riddled budgets and saddle Obama with a $1.3T deficit, WE WOULDNT HAVE A DEBT CRISIS!!

They are bad for this country and favor the wealthy and corporate elite while giving Joe America the fingers. Throw them ALL out!!

                      Frank:
Nice strawman agument. You didnt address a SINGLE THING I posted! I would remind you that tax breaks for the wealthy and big businesses that moved out of the country didnt produce domestic jobs. They both went about applying those breaks to their bottom lines. And wy are we giving business tax breaks to take jobs OUT of the country instead of giving them breaks to bring jobs BACK??? That's every bit as dumb as the GOP's plan to hand over SS and Medicare to the same people who crashed the economy! LOLOLOL. BRILLIANT!

Now, about the GOP abandoning the country in 2009 and the GOP's deliberately debt crisis....................

BTW...... it's Frank Pentangeli! (5 angels)

If Romney was so concerned about the economy in this country then why is he doing so much business overseas instead of right here at home? He doesnt care! He is just casting dispursions again to throw attention off of himself. What a pantload he spews.

We all know he will say or do whatever it takes to get a vote. The man makes John Kerry look like the POPE!

Mittens gives true meaning to the word flip-flopper ...and I dont need a source to be aware of that fact!

Do you know what a blind trust is. NOT blind trust like what you have in Obama. Blind Trust?

Frank: Do you really read so little? Romney's blind trust is ran by his personal attorney, friend and the man he appointed to head his Cayman's island company. This "blind trust" invested 10 million dollars in Romney's son Tagg's company. When questioned about this he claimed this loan was without his imput or knowledge but he assured us if elected president he would put his money in a truly blind trust.

Larry, you babble a lot of words about something totally irrelevant ... it's his money. Now if he had a shady real-estate deal with Tony Rezko, a convicted felon, that greatly increased his wealth ... now that would be worth talking about !

                        This guy really cares!!!

                        In Colorado Springs .
On TV, the Colorado Springs police chief begged Obama not to come as he had no resources to protect him, And didn't need the extra burden ....but Obama came here anyway..
Read this: Colorado Springs ..…they had to suspend flights of the fire fighting tankers because the big O came to town.

No air traffic could be in his vicinity, so the firefighting planes had to stop. The big O (zero) spent hundreds
of thousands of taxpayers money to fly across the country in Air Force One to Colorado to make a campaignstop in the middle of a tremendous fire, thereby totally disrupting all the firefighting and police efforts, and causing millions more in fire damage to forests and homes.. and peoples lives.. all just to make himself look more prominent in the news. This is what we have for a President of our country now folks.
He sure has the best interests of Americans at heart doesn’t he! We got "change" alright!

Co Springs Police Chief Peter Carey: The Presidents visit would not tax cities already strained police force....

Gov Hickenlooper said he expected the President might sign a disaster declaration....

Wow, just run with made up stories and out and out lies, maybe to deflect from your candidates lies, and poor poll numbers?

Romney has often used the excuse he was unaware of how money was invested with because it was in a blind trust even though his friend and personal attorney ran it. Accusations of business with Iran that were illegal due to sanctions and many considered unscrupulous. Any rational person believe that?

Accusations and PROOF are entirey different things !

Allegations, a la Chicago thug-style politics, run rampant with the libbies and Harry Reid has been a good and loyal lap-dog for his master Obama.

Proof by the libbies is usually quite entertaining, imaginative and lacking in substance. Innuendo and insinuation are the best they have.

Do you really want as President a Barack Hussein Obama that merely knows how to give away, waste, invest unwisely if not foolishly, and spend without accountability ??? Obama is a financial moron.

Mitt Romney: nothing new to say, and all his old stuff is baloney.

But apparently a lot of Republicans like baloney with their tea!

Why does Romney make a debt downgrade and possible default out to be such a bad thing?

Because it is a bad thing, and it merely shows how the "original" economic news released by this administration is almost always FALSELY POSITIVE ... only to be downgraded later when it receives less attention.
