Romney: Empathy

“Mitt Romney on Wednesday cited his record in shepherding through the Massachusetts health care law as a sign of his empathy for all people, talking far more openly than usual about a controversial plan that has caused him so much strife with conservative Republicans,” The Boston Globe writes.

Romney said in an interview with NBC: “Don’t forget -- I got everybody in my state insured. One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don’t think there’s anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record.”

The Globe: “Romney made the comments just before going on stage in Toledo, for a rally in which Romney used President Obama’s health care law as a chief example of what’s wrong with the current administration. The dichotomy of his statements further illustrated the tightrope Romney has had to walk in pledging to repeal President Obama’s federal law, while simultaneously trying to take credit for the state-level plan he signed into law in Massachusetts.”

AP: “Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is pointing to his Massachusetts health care law as evidence that he has empathy for ordinary Americans. Romney usually avoids talking about the health care law he championed as Massachusetts governor because President Barack Obama cites it as the basis of his own federal health care law. Republicans reject what they call ‘Obamacare’ as a costly government takeover.”

Bloomberg: “The sale of DoubleClick shares received before the company went public, detailed in previously unreported securities filings reviewed by Bloomberg News, sheds new light on Romney’s estate planning -- the art of leaving assets for heirs while avoiding taxes. The Republican presidential candidate used a trust considered one of the most effective techniques for the wealthy to bypass estate and gift taxes. The Obama administration proposed cracking down on the tax benefits in February. While Romney’s tax avoidance is both legal and common among high-net-worth individuals, it has become increasingly awkward for his candidacy since the disclosure of his remarks at a May fundraiser. He said that the nearly one-half of Americans who pay no income taxes are ‘dependent upon government’ and ‘believe that they are victims.’”

“Republican Mitt Romney is struggling in swing-state Iowa at a perilous point: just as voters here start casting early ballots in the presidential race,” AP writes. “President Barack Obama has a clear lead in Iowa opinion polls, helped by the fact that the state's economy is far more robust than other battleground states. The president's polling edge is so wide it has prompted grumbling among Iowa Republicans who fault Romney for failing to take advantage of Obama's standing, which had been weakened in the four years since Iowa launched his bid for the White House in 2008.”

“New Republican-leaning independent groups entered the presidential advertising fray Wednesday as polling suggests Mitt Romney's campaign may be losing ground against President Obama in key swing states,” AP writes. “The commercials, aimed at voters who supported Obama in 2008 but are undecided now, join those from the campaigns and outside groups swamping a narrow map of competitive states in the presidential contest. Americans for Job Security launched an ad in six swing states as part of an $8.7 million ad buy disclosed last week. The group, which does not have to disclose its donors, has actively supported Republican congressional candidates but has stayed out of the presidential campaign until now. The Ending Spending Action Fund, a new conservative group bankrolled by billionaire Joe Ricketts, was set to debut a $10 million, four-state ad campaign beginning Thursday.”

So a guy who left the company over a decade ago is held accountable for business decisions made today? It's a wonder people like you with such faulty logic are allowed to vote.

Businesses don't run in a vacuum. Technologies improve and Staples is taking advantages of the online world in which we are well entrenched.

Staples is trying to adapt to the evolving needs of its customers. Last month the company reported that its second-quarter net income fell as sales of computers, software, and basic office supplies softened. Computer sales have been pressured by the introduction to many offices of the computer tablet and other mobile devices. Traffic is also down at Staples' stores and Europe continues to be a weak spot.

Are you advocating keeping a store open solely to keep a store open? That's not a sound business practice by any stretch.

Empathy?

The very first thing Romney promises to do if elected president, is to repeal the "Affordable Health Care Act" Obama care... Give me a break, empathy...

Tax dodging is Romney's game...

So the all people of Massachusetts are worthy of having health insurance but the rest of the people of our country are not? And this shows Mr. Romney is "severely" empathetic? Haranguing the masses about how empathetic he is just demonstrates the exact opposite!

Mitt Romney brags he shepherded Massachusett's healthcare law, the one that contains a mandate that everyone must buy health insurance, through the Massachusetts's legislature, which is about 86% Democratic? How in the world did Mitt win the Republican primary, when the Republican platform is to repeal the Affordable Healthcare Act because of the same mandate, anyway?

Picking myself up off the floor.

Seems pretty pathetic when Romney feels he needs to prove "empathy" by touting his Massachusetts health care plan but ignores he plans to REPEAL the national version of it commonly called Obama-Care. Empathy? No, the real Romney was seen in the secretly taped video!

Willard's realizing just how popular Obamacare is. So now he wants credit for it. It won't be long till the rest of the republicans try to take credit for Obamacare. That's what they do, they were for it before they were against it. When they think somethings unpopular they want to kill it, do away with it, repeal it, then when they see how popular it is, they flip and say it was their idea and they supported it all a long.

Mittens cites Romneycare (upon which Obamacare is based) in Massachussets as proof of empathy, but declares he will repeal Obamacare as soon as he takes office. Yeah, that sounds really empathetic to me - NOT! Let me remind all of you, that Romney's perceived lack of empathy is not just restricted to him, but is the foundation upon which the entire Republican platform is based.

Haven't you heard Say What? All the republicans have declared all these polls wrong. They have their internal polls which shows Romney either leading or tied, but they can't tell us what polls their referring to. I guess it's more of the republican imaginary polls, kind of like their imaginary supporters. I wonder if their going to have an imaginary election in November where they win.

The reason Mitt Romney will lose the election

Mitt Romney doesn't hold true to himself as shown by the fact he really does believe in health care for all - he allowed himself to be used by the GOP to support their idea to abolish Obamacare.

He may have had a chance if he stuck by what he believes in.

One thing is for certain - We cannot allow or afford to have a puppet in the Whitehouse and that's all Mitt will be.

Pretty sad really. What kind of man are you if you don't believe in yourself, your idea's and what's right for the Majority of America and allow yourself to be influenced by outside forces.

This is nothing but a precusor to what his whole Administration would be like.

I'm sure Romney thinks his falling polls are just a left-wing conspiracy....NOT the sad facts that the GOP is waging a war on women, wants to cut SS, Medicare, Medicaid (nursing homes, remember!), SSI, student loans, Pell grants, and will work at getting us into another war that we cannot afford while choosing not to fix road/bridges, create jobs, support education or healthcare and destroy unions. No...it's NOT the MESSAGE, is it!!?? Duh....

Romney can't even give stump speeches without Paul Ryan bringing in the only excitement in that dog & pony show.

Whether it is deceiving the most ignorant of the electorate or frightening our vulnerable Seniors with mediscare, Democrats never debate the issues: merely deal in deception, fear mongering, and character assassination. NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Republicans may soon lose a key talking point. According to data released Thursday, President Obama may now be a net job creator.

In the year following Obama's inauguration, the U.S. economy lost about 4.3 million jobs. But new figures released Thursday show 4.4 million jobs have been added back since then.

Here's how it happened: Since early 2010, jobs have slowly been trickling back, particularly in professional services, health care and manufacturing. As of August, the Labor Department had indicated about 4 million jobs had been recovered overall.

Those figures get revised frequently though, as the Labor Department gets more complete data over time. On Thursday, the Labor Department released a statement, saying it crunched the numbers again, using unemployment insurance records that employers are required to file.

Based on that data, the government now believes it under-counted jobs created in much of 2011 by around 386,000. That's according to preliminary figures that the government could still tweak slightly in February.

If true, those figures mean the economy has recovered 4.4 million jobs since early 2010 -- enough to fully account for the jobs lost in Obama's first term. In fact, Obama would be ahead by exactly 125,000 jobs.
