Health care in MA was in the works years and years before Romney was our governor. He passed health care as a way of getting on the national stage. Period. It was the democrats here in MA who wanted it passed because hospital and doctor bills weren't getting paid.

Show me where BEFORE Romney was governor, he was pushing for health care in this country. Ted K. devoted his career to getting it passed. Al Franken before he was a US Senator devoted much of his time here in Boston working on getting health care passed. Michael Dukasis spent years here in MA AFTER he was governor to getting health care passed here.

Romney signed on the dotted line. Period. And then he walked away from it. How can he have any feeling for people in this country if he talks about repealing the president's health care legislation?

He's full of it. Now he sees that the legislation is popular and he has to now change lanes and go back to being "for" health care.

Mitt Romney, speaking at a fundraiser in California, spoke about his wife's harrowing experience on an airplane when it filled with smoke.

He said, according to the LA Times:

"When you have a fire in an aircraft, there's no place to go, exactly, there's no — and you can't find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don't open. I don't know why they don't do that. It's a real problem. So it's very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she's safe and sound."

Paul Ryan and his wife inherited between $1 – 5 million in 2010 and whoopsie daisy, he forgot to disclose it for two years. You’d almost think it was on purpose, well, some people do think that, since Ryan didn’t remember it until he was being vetted by the Romney campaign.
Hey, at least Paul Ryan provided some tax returns when he interviewed for the VP slot. That’s more than some people will do. But it doesn’t look so great that Mr. Ryan forgot to disclose an income producing trust worth between 1 – 5 million dollars.
As he was being vetted, Mr. Ryan pulled a Romney and retroactively amended his disclosures on June 6, 2012 in order to include one of the couple’s largest assets — the $1 – 5 million income producing trust Janna Ryan inherited from her mother.
The omission was classified as an “inadvertent omission.” The average American probably couldn’t justify forgetting about a trust earning, according to USA Today, “between $15,001 and $50,000 in 2010, and between $100,001 and $1 million last year.”

Romney and his wife Ann have been giving to the boys since 1995, and, according to a spokesperson for the Romney campaign, all of their contributions have been below gift-tax contribution limits.

The limit for a couple in 1995 was $20,000 and has since grown to $26,000. In addition, there's a "lifetime gift-tax exclusion" for all the boys that totaled $1.2 million back in 1995 and has since grown to $10 million.

Add it all up, and the Romneys could have gifted $1.3 million in 1995, and a total of $10.6 million through 2011. All tax free.

To get to $100 million, the account would have needed a 26% average annual compound rate of return, said Jonathan Bergman, chief investment officer at Palisades Hudson Asset Management. Stocks over that same time have gained about 10%.

While many of the key details are missing because the family hasn't released gift-tax returns or disclosed the contributions to the trust, there were likely a few other strategies at play, tax experts said.

"You've got people who are paid $1 million a year to work 3,000 hours just to figure out ways to transfer money from older generations to younger generations, and Romney has the money to hire the best of the best," said Bergman.

As the co-founder of private equity firm Bain Capital, which he left in 1999, Romney has received compensation in the form of "carried interest", the share of investment profits that is paid to private equity fund managers. And if Romney transferred this interest to make payments to his kids' trust, he could have received big valuation discounts of up to 40% or more. So if Romney transferred interests in Bain Capital with a net asset value of, say, $14,000, he could have reported the fair market value as only $10,000, below the gift-tax exemption in 1995.

My daughter had to play a game in her high school economics class. Each student was given a bag of poker chips to be used as money. Pat Boston MA.Health care in MA was in the works years and years before Romney was our governor. He passed health care as a way of getting on the national stage. Period. It was the democrats here in MA who wanted it passed because hospital and doctor bills weren't getting paid.

What Party has been in control in MA the majority of the time? Democrats!! Democrats have controlled the State Legislator since 1950's. When Dukakis was governor both times his party, Democrats, had control of the State. Healthcare didn't get passed. It ultimately took a Republican Governor who worked with the opposing party and signed the bill into law.

Ted Kennedy served for DECADES, and his party had control of all three branches more than once. But he couldn't get it done.

This is one thing that amazes me about people who are total clones of their party. Just like with the first 2 years of this administration's Presidency, he had total control and didn't get immigration reform through, didn't get gay marriage through, didn't cut the budget in half, didn't close gitmo, didn't get an energy bill passed and to this day he still cannot get a budget passed in his Democrat controlled congress. And his Budget was voted down 99-0!! It doesn't matter if a person in a particular party works on something for decades, it only matters if they got it done, passed into law. Just like Bush, he had control for his first term, but failed to get immigration reform through, failed to get balance budget amendment through and failed to get an energy bill through. Although both Bush & Obama accomplished some things, they didn't get done those things they promised & that are most important to our economy. Just as the predecessors before them.

So, as a responsible voter & a citizen, individuals in this country need to dump their attitudes that their party is so much better when they are the same. They need to realize that if these people in Washington no matter what party they belong to can't get things done then they need to be fired. Just as you and I would be if we did our jobs half *donkey*. That is the ONLY way we are going to fix this country.

And if you don't fire them, then the parties are not to blame. Just turn around & look in the mirror, that is who is to blame.

First hand experience, this health care law is not what he is making it out to be, in fact he is being disingenuous in stating so. I've got close friends, who haven't been able to find a full time job in the last five years. Many of them have no health insurance. Some have been penalized on thier tax returns for not having it.

When filling out the 'eligiblity form' with your tax return, there is an income level that defines 'affordability'. One friend finally met the 'unable to afford' level last year, and was able to not be penalized on his return. When he had to go to the hospital, he was given paperwork to fill out, to get free healthcare. The application came back rejected, and indicated that he could in fact afford it. So on his tax return, he 'legally' couldn't afford it, and realistically, he couldn't afford it even when his tax return indicated he could. Mass Health says he can afford it.

There is absolutely no value in this program he is flaunting as some kind of accomplishment.

The Republicans sure can pick them as most of you are so happy to see. However the Democrats aren't much better. let's look at the REAL picture.

A lot of you reference the Koch brothers and make the connection about wealthy individuals supporting Republicans. Well Obama and the Dems have their own, George Soros. The Dems also have the support of the two richest men in America, yet no mention about that in the media or from their class warfare propagandists.

I don't care for Romney and agree with some of the critisims being leveled at him, but frankly I would prefer him over a known Marxist. I find it interesting that the media has dug as much up on Romney as possible, but they give Obama a free pass. His biological father was a communist agitator, his uncle was an avid Marxist, he associates with know communist conspirators that were active terrorists and when to a church, for 20 years, who's pastor was/is a racist and anti-American.

When a Republican changes his stand on something it is a flip-flop, when a Democrat does it, it is nuanced or evolved.Let's talk more about flip flop and changing direction. Obama as a senator in 2006 was against raising the debt ceiling.

I frankly see the Republican failure to move this or their last candidate forward, when it should have been a slam dunk as conspiratorial. NEVER in the history of this country has a presidential candidate been elected with such a horrible fiscal/economic record.

I have stated many times before that there is a little difference between the two parties and what I am seeing does nothing more than support that. While the Dems and liberals cast aspersions at the Republicans for being in the pocket of the rich they too are guilty of the same. In the mean time regardless of who is elected the uber-rich, and I do mean SUPER rich i.e. international bankers will continue to control our destiny.

We need to get rid of the Federal Reserve, stop being the world police, get government out of our pockets, our bedrooms, and our social life.

This one particular friend I am discussing, can only find a part time job, with 20-25 hours available per week. This is a person that has a BA from Boston University. The level of income needed to avoid penalty is so low, that Rent, car, and food, and family barely get covered. Healthcare, for him, is a luxury, not an affordable item. It's not like he chooses to not have it, the money just isn't there.

He then has the pre existing condition issue's that would in effect cause denial of coverage issue's. It's far deeper than your stating oh just go out and buy it. He could stop eating, or stop paying rent, and live on the streets with his family, then maybe he could afford it. So yeah, he's totally placing the burden on you, and I.

There is a difference between a state implementing a program for within that state and the whole of the US being forced into a program that really does have some major downfalls (more on that in a moment). If other states want to follow suit, great, but that state is exercising a state's right. A state exercising that right individually has the ability to modify its own program to fit its own unique situation, and every state is in a unique situation. Massachusetts' economy is nothing at all like Oklahoma's economy or Florida's economy. What people in Delaware might be able to afford is different from what people in Mississippi would be able to afford. Trying to implement a whole-nation fix where everyone must just comply is hazardous on so many levels. First, and foremost, by tying all of the states economies together medically, prices for medical care will naturally rise first through greater demand (more people going to doctors because they aren't going to pay for something they aren't going to use), second through the inflationary effect of forcing businesses to purchase insurance (the cost of which will either come through cutting other overhead or raising prices, because it has to come from somewhere, and when prices rise in any industry it has the effect of raising prices everywhere), and third through the balancing out of the health care industry being competitive in all markets (ie if a larger economy's insurance market is now open to a smaller economy's public to purchase insurance at cheaper prices, the public becomes better insured, and the medical industry in the smaller market raises prices because the market can now afford to pay more for a service that is not going anywhere--we may all stop buying cars, but we're not going to having our broken arms set or stop getting stints in our hearts). Second to this we have doctors threatening to quit providing medicare, nurses who already go on strikes readying to demand higher wages (which may or may not be warranted), and a plethora of other major flaws.

On the issue of compassion, it is absolutely disgusting that the left feels it necessary to claim the right is without compassion, and to try and frighten everyone into believing that the right is just heartless and evil. Of course we don't want you to get sick and die quickly--what we want are solutions that make sense, that are balanced, that are well-considered before they are implemented. It is NOT good enough to say, "We have to fix this problem, and we have to do it now while we have the majority rule, so we're going to ignore the pitfalls and all the voices of reason screaming at us to slow down and open our eyes, and we'll just see whats in this bill after it's passed." To pretend the methods that were used to get this bill passed were anything like compassion is ludicrous. There was no compassion from the left at all for all the people who were pointing out the faults; there was only disdain and name-calling and bitterness and hatred, and a heck of a lot of pointing to the right and saying, "They don't love you--they want you to die," all in the name of a win. Whether you want to see it or not, there are problems with this law that are just blatant errors, showing total lack of forethought, and proving that it is not enough to have the idea of doing the fair thing--you must also have the idea of doing the right thing.

The most glaring lack of forethought in the ACA is that in 2013 the change in itemization of medical expenses goes into effect, and it is a direct tax increase on the truly ill. Before a person had to spend 7.5% of their income on medical expenses and then the rest could be deducted on their taxes. In 2013, that goes up to 10%. To put it into perspective, before a person earning $50,000 would have to spend $3750 on medical and then everything they spent after that would be deductible, but if it wasn't more than the standard deduction, you would just take the standard deduction. So, if the person is married filing jointly, in order for itemizing to make sense, they would need to have more than $11,900 in itemized deductions, and if they have no other deductions to itemize, they would need to spend $15,651 on medical expenses, to see a $1 benefit to them over the standard deduction--that is a whole lot of sick, and sadly some people are that sick. Come 2013, that same person earning $50,000 will have to spend $5000 on medical before the rest is deductible, so with the standard deduction at $11,900, they would need to spend $16,901 on medical, an increase of $1250 more they would have to spend. Now granted, no one is out there trying to spend more on medical in order to itemize. The people who are able to itemize their medical are usually the truly ill people, and their spending outdoes the standard deduction no matter what--of course they would prefer to be healthy. But what this change means to them is that less of their medical expenses will be deducted and more of them get counted as taxable income, in this case $1250 more, and the number would increase with increasing income, but it's not like they have that $1250 just sitting around waiting for Uncle Sam to take his $12.50 fair share out of it--they've spent it on something that was absolutely necessary to them. How does this increase in taxation on the truly ill make any sense at all?

Another problem is that people who can't afford the insurance but make over a certain amount have to prove their hardship before they are allowed the waiver. But after proving their hardship and getting their waiver, is the government going to provide them with help, or are they still out on their own? This is again a problem that affects the truly ill--a problem that affects those people who make too much money to benefit from the system already in place, but don't have enough to be able to survive paying for the thing that will help them survive--they can't afford to live through the cancer or the heart disease because the cost of care is too high. The people who are going bankrupt because of medical expenses, who've been kicked out of their insurance already, aren't going to have enough money to be able to purchase the insurance you've made available to them again, so of course they will get their waiver, but what then. They are still working and earning their decent salaries, but they are going broke anyway because of the cost of care. They are still in the same boat, as far as I can tell, only they just won't have to pay the penalty that the government put in place for everyone else.

Another problem is the idea that somehow these new regulations are going to suddenly make people who already cheat the system stop cheating the system. Thieves are thieves. Why should people who aren't thieves be punished when it's obvious the thieves will just find the next end-around, just like always, in order to avoid the punishment? We actually have a program here where I live (I don't know, it may be everywhere), that people one welfare take this basic intelligence test, and if they can't pass, they are given stipends for food, shelter, gas and electric, telephone, everything, and they sit in a class all day, just like they did in public school, to learn what they should have learned the first time the taxpayer paid for it... until they can pass that test that deems them employable. These people don't ever pass the test. WHY SHOULD THEY? It would be STUPID to pass that test. It is their job to get what they can out of the system. People like this aren't going to change because we tell them to--they literally have to do some soul-searching, but we can't force them to do that because that would be politically incorrect, because what if they really can't pass? There's no proving they aren't just stupid. People like this are superior at gaming the system.

Worse yet is the idea that somehow we're going to suddenly regulate humanity, like we truly think if we just tax someone enough, they will suddenly understand that it's for the good of everyone and not expect anything in return, or if we just demand that doctors see patients for less money in the medicare system, they are going to keep seeing medicare patients, or if we just insist that businesses provide insurance, out of the good of their hearts, these businesses will take the hit to their overhead. BUT NOW, I'm just ranting. Trust me, I could go on.

I had to expound, I didn't expect to debate my statement, and no disrespect was mean't to you. Yes it's economical. I had to look up the penalty, I didn't know what it was. The penalty results in a payment due at tax filing of anywhere between 228, and 1260 dollars, for an individual deemed to be able to afford, but not have health care. This penalty is a line item on our tax returns. While searching I found an article (WSJ blog) indicating 20.6 million dollars in revenue was received this year, just from penaties, according to State records.

He claims he didn't raise taxes though, and everyone was afforded coverage. The law just takes money away from those that don't have it. Shoving taxes down people's throats 'for their own good'. I know in his case the penalty resulted in him having to borrow money, to pay for a penalty, that he couldn't afford, to make up for healthcare, he didn't have, nor could afford. I can't wait till a law like this becomes National.

"I think throughout this campaign as well, we talked about my record in Massachusetts, don't forget -- I got everybody in my state insured," Romney told NBC's Ron Allen in an interview before his rally here tonight. "One hundred percent of the kids in our state had health insurance. I don't think there's anything that shows more empathy and care about the people of this country than that kind of record."

Well he DIDN'T get everyone in the country insured, President Obama did.

Mitt Robme has promised that the first thing he would do, if given a chance, is reverse the Affordable Care Act to make sure that the American People are NOT insured.

So, tell me again, how is that "empathy"? Obviously, it's NOT.

You might get some traction if you explain WHY you think that it would be "smart" to vote President Obama out, and WHY you think that he's not a good president.

Really???? Please show us statistics that point to President Obama has everyone (100%) in our country insured. See, you cannot. Why? Because subsidies to help most Americans buy insurance don’t begin until 2014. Obamacare relies on Exchanges created to pay for the cost of those subsidies. Those exchanges must be set up by the individual States. The Supreme court ruled this portion to be unconstitutional, therefore the States do no have to participate and many are not or have yet decided. Plus if a State decides to participate, they elect a new governor or state legislation the following year. That State can change their mind and drop it.

In order for Obamacare to work, all States have to participate. If they don't then our health cost skyrocket more then ever and more people will become uninsured.

Why will they become uninsured? Because the penalty for not having insurance is far less than your Annual costs. Same for employers, their penalty is far less then the cost of covering employees.

So in summary you don't know what in the heck you are talking about. You know nothing past the talking points. You have not looked at the bill, your have not researched it, followed the progress off it, or learned anything at all about it. Everyone IS NOT insured and they NEVER WILL BE.

Oh and the CBO, emphatically stated in their report on the Stimulus that it did indeed worked and in fact, kept this country from sliding into a full blown depression. A depression brought on by years of Republican fiscal policies. Don't ever get the notion that your crowd is fiscally responsible. 8 years of Bush proved that beyond any doubt. Two unpaid wars, unpaid drug bill and irresponsible tax cuts took this country from a balanced budged when Bush entered office to a huge deficit and our country teetering on the brink of complete ruin.
