VIDEO: First Read Minute: Obama lead grows

NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss new poll data that shows a growing lead for President Obama in some key states and a new Romney campaign ad the shows the governor talking right to the camera. Also, how the campaigns are focused on Ohio and how that plays into the race.

Of course Willard and Eddie will tell you to "pay no attention to that man behind the curtain (Polls)." Meanwhile it is looking more and more like curtains for Willard. Enjoy your slide to the ash heap of history as a forgotten footnote, an answer to a trivia question. Does anyone think Willard will even be invited to the 2016 Republican Convention? Bush did not attend the last two and he was even a sitting President for the '08 convention.

According to Romney's internal polls...He is still losing. The donors will be drying up, other candidates are running away, and Romney has no place to go but down to defeat. As for the debates, Romney will still not have have a specific on taxes, foreign policy, immigration, and the list goes on.

If Romney's internal polls showed an empirical difference, he would have ads running EVERYWHERE with those numbers.

Which means he knows the current polling is correct.

Poor Mittens, Queen Ann will be SOOOOOO angry!

If Mitty continues to stick his big Italian leather clad foot in his mouth, especially during the first debate, watch the money start to dry up fast.

You liberals just keep on believing the polls. Everytime you do, you stand at the end of the line shaking your head wondering what happened. Liberals rely so much on polling data but never understand how it actually works. All the major polls are favoring Obama in their polling data... not because he's actually ahead, but because he won by so much in 08. This is a regular occurance... the stacking of polling data based on the last election turn out.

I'll tell you liberals what... Go ahead and keep believing Obama is in the lead... polls have never been wrong or stacked... it's a totally honest system (rolling eyes). Close your receptors to polling history... Don't look back on prior elections when the polls showed your candidate to be in the lead right up to election day, to have them lose by landslides.

I actually enjoy the bragging done by the liberals. Brag away and keep on trusting in the polls. We shall see who has the real laugh the day after the election.

The beauty of this election is, the Republican Party choose two men who absolutely embody the right-wing philosophy, of cutting taxes for the wealthiest and expecting the uninsured to use the emergency room for their healthcare, and voters took a look and said "no thanks."

Brianb-

You are absolutely correct. It is obvious the MSM has a bias for President Obama and have slanted their polling in his favor.

Conservative-leaning MSM like Fox News and the Wall Street Journal have over-exagerated President Obama's reelection chances in order to lull the LIberals into a false sense of security so they will stay home on election day and not vote. I wonder why Rassmussen is not part of this grand conspiracy?

This strategy could backfire, though, since some independent voters are swayed by these polls and want to be part of the "winning team". The lead also fires up the base and makes them more likely to contribute to a winning cause, while it may discourage donations to the Romney campaign and make independent voters less likely to cast their vote for a perceived "loser".

In their infinite wisdom, though, I am sure Fox and the WSJ have triangulated these possiblities and formulated their polling strategies....

Perhaps a more likely reading of the "oversampling" of Democrats is that while both parties show some percentage decline from 2008 as voters switch from a party affiliation to "Independent", the decline was at a lower rate for Democrats. Logically this makes sense based upon the embrace of Tea Pary extremists by the Republican party.

BrianB is certainly wrong about interpreting the polls, but he may be correct in predicting the outcome of the election. While the polls are accurately depicting Obama should win, what the polls cannot predict is the number of voters that will have their constitutional right to vote taken away via voter suppression, fraud by election officials, and other devious tactics the GOPTP are utilizing to swing the vote towards Romney. Just look at the Tampa ballots. Those 6 page long form ballots are not designed to encourage voter participation, they are designed to discourage. Of course election official fraud is nothing new in Florida, in fact, they are damn good at it and by now we can call them experts.

Not only is this election about re-electing Obama, but it is also about Supreme Court Justice nominees, and even more importantly, it is about stopping the GOPTP dead in their tracks in efforts to rewrite voting rules and laws that favor their candidate. If the GOPTP take over, the fraudulent tactics from GOPTP election officials will be enacted into law and millions of voters will lose their constitutional right to have their vote counted.

This year, the choice is easy. Vote Democrat and put and end to GOPTP sponsored election official fraud.

I don't think everyone is out to get me... but I see the Obama administration as anti-American because Obama is a Colonialist. Tell me liberals, do you even know what a Colonialist is? Liberals have this tendency to not really pay attention to the words Obama uses in his speeches... and his policy. Liberals truly believe Obama is a democrat. He masks it well.

Bill Clinton is a democrat while Hillary is a socialist progressive. Obama is using the democrat party to achieve the Dreams of his Father. Not a single liberal on this board understands that. Because of the (D) they feel the (R)'s are unfair in trying to remove him from office.

7 Tossup States: Obama leads in 7, Romney leads in Zero.
Delegates: Obama = Solid(142)+Likely(37)+Lean(86) = 265 +Tossup(82) = 347
Delegates: Romney = Solid(76)+Likely(74)+Lean(41) = 191 +Tossup(zero) = 191

BrianB is certainly wrong about interpreting the polls How am I wrong about interpreting the polls RedDev? Haven't you paid attention to the news stories about the stacking of the polling data in the democrats favor? This practice has been done for years and years... it's all based on the turn-out of the last election (08) where democrats outnumbered republicans by a factor between 6% and 13%. How come this is so hard for you to understand.

but he may be correct in predicting the outcome of the election. While the polls are accurately depicting Obama should win, what the polls cannot predict is the number of voters that will have their constitutional right to vote taken away via voter suppression Now who is being paranoid? What voter suppression are you talking about? Prove it! Don't just make a statement without providing actual proof... you can't so your assertion is completely ridiculous.

fraud by election officials, Proof? and other devious tactics the GOPTP are utilizing to swing the vote towards Romney. Here again you make the statement devious tactics, without listing the tactics you are referring to.

Just look at the Tampa ballots. Those 6 page long form ballots are not designed to encourage voter participation, they are designed to discourage. Of course election official fraud is nothing new in Florida, in fact, they are damn good at it and by now we can call them experts. What is the difficulty in providing 6 page ballots? Do you realize how many people are running in Florida. Should they make a 1 page ballot with micro printing? This election is NOT just about the president. There are many local elections that are included in the ballot. You are obfuscating the reality of this election in order to make a sub-par point.

Excellent case of rambling on and on about your personal belief that the GOP, or any opposition should just disappear. You'd like nothing more that a one party system where your party controls everything.

This year, the choice is easy. Vote Democrat and put and end to GOPTP sponsored election official fraud. No can do, and I think you will find that the opposite will be true... Maybe you should get out in the real world for a bit of time, instead of reading all the propaganda your fellow liberals are propagating.

If you have been following Rassmussen for some time, they have Obama and Romney in a dead heat. Most other polls show that Obama is in the lead. Rassmussen uses a 2 week tracking system... and their daily poll is comprised of the previous 3 days of polling data in order to average out the results. If Rassmussen shows a dead heat by using this system, the other polls have to be using a prior election weighing because most of them show Obama in the lead... sometimes more than the margin of error.

This strategy could backfire, though, since some independent voters are swayed by these polls and want to be part of the "winning team". I know the different parties are using tactics to try to grab the independent vote. I have to admit that I agree with you on most of what you said. The end result is, this election is way too close to call this far out. I have my suspicions that Romney may pull this off simply due to the factors that are not mentioned very much... Obama's poor unemployment performance and the poor state of the economy... Add to that the recent turmoil in the middle east... Those things do not add to the plus column in Obama's favor.

One of Brianb's many theories:

The reason why Governor Romney is so unpopular in Massachusetts because Massachusetts is too liberal and all about Obama and the Democrats.

The fact that 4 of last 5 governors + Sen. Scott Brown were/are all REPUBLICANS is pure coincidence and, in brianb's eyes, meaningless voting pattern of the Massachusetts voter.

In his mind, the significant dislike of Romney by Mass residents has all to do with the liberal agenda and nothing to do with Romney's job performance.

So folks, do not be shocked that Brianb keeps dismissing most polls (and that's only because they show Romney is behind) - he is not capable of taking many factors and turning them into an indicator of what is more likely.

Convergence/Divergence

Just finished looking at 17 different polls that looked at both candidates national

polling, state by state battleground polling and candidate fav./unfav ratings.

If the RWNJ theories were correct, there would be a split in the convergence/

divergence, with a conflict between the trajectories of both candidacies.

Instead, there is almost complete uniformity in the polling models showing

divergence between the two candidates with the date of separating

trajectories being August 16th. What happened on or about August 16th?

Could it be that a highly partisan, deeply divisive veep candidate was

selected? Did the "MSM" pick that day to jump in the tank for the leading

candidate? Did the planet Kolob align with Niburu to begin the Mayan

apocalypse? I'll leave that to your own rational faculties to judge. What I

gleaned from the polling is; move New Hampshire to the Rombot camp,

move Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado and Nevada to

the President's camp. Give the President a respectable 300+ E.V.'s and a

second term. The caveat; after lacing up your dancing shoes for the victory lap,

RUN TO THE POLLS AND VOTE FIRST.

Your poutrage over the fact that I didn't specify to the pollster my full intention is disingenuous. While you support a president that didn't provide protection for the slain ambassador you whine and moan over something I did that you disagree with. Perspective has a way of escaping your reality.

Update: While I was typing this another polling company called... Another yes for Obama... should bring out the outrage of every liberal on this board! ROFL!!!

Brianb - you're bringing up protection of our Ambassador who was killed is very telling. I suppose you have no problem that Bush failed to warn the US about 9/11/2001? Your sense of reality is telling. None of what it says about you and how you skew facts is good!

Oh and of course we believe that just every polling group is calling you daily! NOT!!!

Bayllie said: So folks, do not be shocked that Brianb keeps dismissing most polls (and that's only because they show Romney is behind) - he is not capable of taking many factors and turning them into an indicator of what is more likely.

Bayllie, as a liberal you dismiss history as a point of reference. It appears as though it's inherent in the liberal line of thinking... nobody ever said liberals were logical creatures... they base most of their thinking on emotions.

I simply don't know if you are intelligent enough to do research... that is something that is to be determined... My opinion says no. If you want to prove me wrong, do a search on the history of polling data in presidential elections. What you will find is that most polling is way off. The end results of most polling shows that polling is worthless.

There are two companies that come close. The most hated Rassmussen and Gallop are the most accurate but even they are not perfect.

Polling is the art of using crystal balls to predict the future... What most liberals don't understand is crystal balls do not exist for predicting future events...

Polling data is totally inaccurate at best. Look it up if you don't believe me.

Seeking Sanity - I know your sole existence on this board is to take what any conservative says and personally attack that conservative. This is your form of entertainment. Facts don't matter, truth has even less meaning to you. If a conservative says something, your goal is to attack the person, not the information.

You have become a joke... Your attacks don't bother me. I realize your mind is centered around hatred and your zeal to try to make yourself feel better. It must be a terrible existence to have to continually attack those you disagree with. I will go back to what I used to do... ignore you. I wish you much fun in your juvenile methods. Attack away. Your attacks are meaningless because everyone here knows this is what you do. You are nothing but a mosquito.

The only poll that matters, is the poll at the end of the voting day. No oversampling or manipulations there.

No manipulations involved unless you account for GOP legislative voter purges, GOP shortened early voting dates and times, GOP redistricting to help with House races, GOP passage of new and ponderous voter id requirements. Yeah no manipulations.

Obama's lead is growing so are republicans saying that the pollsters are increasing their oversampling of democrats. You think maybe there are just more people who identify as democrats, so naturally they are "oversampled". Are more people really right handed rather than left handed, or is that because right handers were "oversampled". Romney is losing by every poll, by every measure, it's that simple and it is the truth, ha on election day republicans will have been "under-sampled" and democrats will have been "over-sampled" if it makes some people feel better to describe Romney's loss in that way.

The most recent results from the Franklin and Marshall College Poll in Pennsylvania (September 18- 23) put President Obama ahead of Romney by 9 to 11 points in the state:

President Obama has led Mitt Romney in every Franklin & Marshall College Poll since September 2011 (see Figure 1). The president currently leads Romney among registered voters in Pennsylvania 50% to 39% with 6% undecided. The president’s advantage is slightly narrower among likely voters, 52% to 43%, with 3% undecided. President Obama leads in most regions of the state, including Philadelphia, Allegheny County, and the southeast, and he has comfortable leads among young voters, non-whites and women (see Attachment A). Mitt Romney holds an advantage among conservatives, Protestants, and born-again Christians.

President Obama is steamrolling Romney in the polls, and Republican sniveling about imaginary "oversampling" be damned. If they want their feeble-minded candidate to appear more presidential, tell him to shut up. It's simple: every time he opens his mouth he leaves brain droppings all over the front pages of newspapers and on media websites. The right wing lunatic fringe then complains about media bias because news services world wide have the unmitigated gall to quote him verbatim. The American people, however, want a president who doesn't sound like the village idiot's dimwitted brother, hence Mitt's abysmal standings in the polls.

Therefore, if Mitt is harboring any illusions about playing catch up in this race, he will have to put a gag in it. Good luck with that during the debates, Willard.

so this is your big rebuttal? No facts, not studies, not even references to history (especially since you mention history as point of reference)? Just a generic statement..

History shows some polls traditionally are more accurate than others. Rasmussen isn't one of them.

The website is seeking to mitigate republican fears that Romney is slightly
behind Obama by tweaking the partisan tilt rightward, rejecting polled data, and
weighting them in favor of their candidate based on an extremely favorable
formula from a Republican-leaning firm.

Now, you can believe it if you want, but you're deluding yourself and you deserve to know why.

Here is why UnskewedPolls may paint a charming picture for a conservative,
but isn't statistically right.

It seems that for Romney's every statement, there is a video of him saying the exact opposite.

When Ryan said he wouldn't tell us what deductions they would get rid of, Ryan told us he wouldn't tell us any details because they wanted to get their ideals passed. What this says to me is that if the Ryan/Romney campaigns tells us what they plan to do no one would vote for them.

Romney is not qualified to be president and most republicans know this, but will defends Romney's right to destroy America for the rich and their tax cuts.

Don't Romney and Ryan look in this photo as if they got their outfits from a uniform supply place? The audio that goes with the photo has the crowd shouting "Ryan" and Mitt trying to get them to chant "Romney/Ryan", with little success.

The Republicans created most of the debt, blocked the President's efforts to spur the economy and increase revenues that way and refuse to raise taxes and then blame President Obama for the debt, when their own plan would increase it. Nice try.

Finally Mitt let middle-class see a glimmer of the truth...no tax cuts for them....but 20% tax cuts for wealthy.

"We have got to reform our tax system," Romney said at a morning event here. "Small businesses most typically pay taxes at the individual tax rate. And so our individual income taxes are the ones I want to reform. Make them simpler. I want to bring the rates down. By the way, don't be expecting a huge cut in taxes because I'm also going to lower deductions and exemptions. But by bringing rates down we will be able to let small businesses keep more of their money so they can hire more people."

Several of the folks in this discussion, all of them self-identifying as Republicans, harbor a notion that flies in face of all, and I do mean all of the national and local reporting on this issue. Their notion? That voter id laws and their potential for vote suppression are a myth, or that these laws do not even exist. Where these folks have been the last six or so months, and how they've somehow missed all of this is beyond me.

Go on-line and call up your local newspapers, as well as some of the bigger papers in the country, and check out political blogs too--search for voter id laws. Start with Pennsylvania, where this week another judge is taking a good hard look at this ill-conceived law. Then take a look at what is going on in Wisconsin, under the teapublican governor, Scott Walker. Take a look at Florida. And more.

Before you sound off in such a well-exposed on-line discussion, at least know the facts and not the made-up ones that suit your political agenda and purposes. And for crying out loud, stop verbally "sneering" at other writers. As one writer commented in response to one particularly offensive "sneerer," and I'm paraphrasing here, well, of course we know what colonialists are......leastwise those of us who are well-educated. Folks, it is the height of misplaced arrogance to assume that everyone else is stupid simply because they do not agree with you. Disagree we will, but civilized people find a way to disagree agreeably. This "take-no-prisoners" nonsense degrades both the important subjects being discussed and the opinions of those who hew to this form of attack. Haven't you ever noticed that in face-to-face heated discussions the one who seems mostly to be relying on hearsay, few or no facts, and sometimes ideologically based arguments is the one talking really, really rapidly, and, well, usually really, really loudly. Hmmmmmmmmmm. Just saying.

I wonder the same thing myself as many of them have been around here for sometime and this subject has been discussed a number of times by myself and others. Just last week a poster who lives in my state Florida, when venturing an opinion of the early voting hours said he wasn't aware of the changes. Between trying to purge the voter rolls of imaginary fraudulent voters, mostly I might add, either Hispanic or African American, when that was challenged successfully. They tried something else, from cutting the early voting hours, to making it more difficult to register whether by threatening a worker with huge fines or have workers or organizations be registered with the state. Then this morning in the Palm Beach Post the Supervisor of Elections returned to the RNC copies of voter registrations received that they were questioning. These registrations were done by a company hired by the RNC and paid over $1m, it was the second time registrations by this same company were questioned, now the RNC is saying they have severed their contract with them. I so believe this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, with a ballot that is 10 pages long many will simply give up and not vote. Unless there is a clear cut winner with a good margin we may be battling this election for some time. As there are forces at work to suppress the vote, all of us should be very concerned but I only hear Democrat voices the GOP voices from the top down are silently sitting by watching and hoping those nefarious forces succeed.

People need to remember if you find a reason not to vote, you are fulfilling someone else agenda.

GET OUT AND VOTE..........VOTE EARLY OR VOTE BY MAIL......BUT VOTE.

I live in Louisiana, and we've always had to show ID in order to vote. I guess it's hard for me to understand how requiring ID suppresses voting, when we've been doing it here without any problems for years. To me it just seems like no big deal, pretty much a no brainer. We require ID for all sorts of things in this country, so I really don't understand the issues. Maybe, instead of fighting the laws, the Democrats should just work within the system to make sure it's handled in a way that doesn't disenfranchise voters. I guess that would make too much sense though.

Job1, that's the plan for our working household. Never met a republican I'd vote for, I'm almost 60 years old, been voting since I was 19 and have yet to pull the lever for one republican, not even in local elections where folks don't openly tell you what party they are in - but for me and mine? We ask and we check them out if we don't believe them - not gonna vote for a republican and not gonna spend my money in a republican establishment. I'm still not buying what they are selling.

Union - I have voted for Republicans in the past but the last one I voted for is now doing time. Learned my lesson!

Looks like a lot of Tennessee folk voted for a democrat by just looking at the top of the ticket. LOL then wanted to disavow their pick. Unfortunately this is what happens when you vote straight party ticket on either side.

Even with polls in President Obama's favor....let's not get complacent....make sure you have the correct voter id and vote!

And make sure everyone you know has correct voter id, and get them to the voting booth.

GOP has blatantly tried to rig this election...let's make sure American voices are heard at the voting booth.

Dragon - so true. The last rigged election got us Bush - twice! And rememeber, Jeb Bush has promised Romney Florida. We know Jeb will stop at NOTHING to get his candidate elected!

Hope the "polls" show Barry with the largest margin of victory in history on Nov.5th. The beaners will stay home and have a few more tamales while the 'roids have another piece of fried chicken and watermelon while remaining at home. We know they will be at home because the vast majority (of the minority) do not work.

Please do show up at your polling place on the 5th.

the vast majority (of the minority) do not work.

          That's a load...

BTW where do you work? I'm guessing the Wal-Mart in Cullman, AL.

Come on people . Their are 35 000,000 Baptist in the USA and every one has been bombarding me with news letters magazines etc that Mormonism is a cult. If they do vote for Romney then they will be voting for an atheist.

Thomas Richard - I have the feeling that at least one southern state that is NOT considered a toss-up will go for Obama because the conservative Christians will not be able to bring themselves to pull the lever for a Mormon. I'm not saying it's right but I do believe it will be true.

Paul Ryan's pet name for Mitt Romney is "the Stench", according to his staff. Romney failed to dupe the Tea Party, something Rush does every day.

That has been proven to be absolutely false, just for your information. That was taken from a satirical column on Politico. Apparently, the New York Times ran with it, not knowing that it was satire.

That 47 percent will vote against Romney. In four years the number will probably be over 50 percent which will start the end of the democratic process. Once the majority of the public realize they can keep voting themselves more "entitlements" the end of the country will not be far behind. Then we will be Greece. The only problem with Socialism is eventually you will run out of other peoples money to spend.

Yes, the 47% will vote against Romney. That's exactly what Romney was saying in that video. There is no reason for them to vote for Romney, he doesn't really have anything to offer them. I really can't forsee a Republican president any time soon. They start out at such a disadvantage from the start, and the media makes it even more difficult. It has gotten to the point where the Democrats have people convinced that they are the "knights in shining armor" and the Republicans are the "evil empire". Most of the people on here wouldn't ever consider voting for a Republican, they are convinced that they want to do away with the middle class and give all the money and power to the 1%. The thing I wonder though, how is it any better to give all the money and power to the government?

Poor Mitt Romney. It's as true today as it was when I was a kid: nobody actually likes an Etchasketch. Sure, it's an amusing diversion for a few minutes, but then it just gets confusing and frustrating and irritating and all you want to do is toss it aside and get on with your life.

When a Presidental candidate calls every poll in America a liar you know there is something wrong with his judgement. A few of these polls have always been very reliable and for the Romney camp to say they are just out to get them shows complete desperation and denial. We have to listen to the whineing and crying for another month and even after the election is over we have to listen to another month of how the polls and everybody plotted against them.

Go ahead all you liberals...vote for "O" again. Remember...when Government Motors goes broke....coal mining is shut down....ecocomy colapses...health care is broke...Social Security is broke...Medicare is broke....on and on and on.....you liberals will be hurt first. the rest of us can see this coming with 4 more years of "O" and we will be prepared. If nothing else....we here in Texas will secede. we should anyway....we can make it on our own. you all will be invited to The Republic of Texas. just leave your liberal junk were you come from....we do not need it here.

Notice how Obama bears a strange resemblence to Alfred E. Neumann??

Moochelle reminds one of a linebacker in drag. Hey, maybe that's why Obama backed that gay marriage thingie.
