Today's final deadline for embattled Missouri Republican Senate nominee Todd Akin to withdraw from the race is just hours away, and he has scheduled a news conference at 3:00 pm ET.
Is he potentially dropping out of the contest?
Not a chance, his campaign says.
"Staying in the race, as we've said," Ryan Hite, the campaign's communications director, said in a text message to NBC News.
"Just kicking off bus tour today and talking about Missouri Commonsense values as the bus tour title suggests," Hite continued. "Nothin[g] earth shattering."

According to Akin's campaign website, the Missouri Common Sense Bus Tour launches today and runs through Friday.
*** UPDATE *** Declaring that he "was given a trust" after winning a three-way Republican primary contest in August, Akin this afternoon affirmed he wouldn't quit his senate race.
"Over the period of the last number of weeks, a number of people have asked me, 'Are you quitting, are you dropping out?" Akin told supporters this afternoon. He added, "I don't believe that that is really my decision. The decision was made by the voters of the state of Missouri."
The event, meant to mark the kickoff of Akin's bus tour, was billed as a press conference, though Akin didn't take questions from the media.

I am glad to see Akin not let the Liberal trolls bully him around. Abortion is always thrown into the elections so the Democrats can dupe the militant females into voting Democrat. Roe versus Wade is over forty years old and has no chance of ever being undone. The social unrest would be tremendous and every politician knows this. So by removing this non-issue from the political discussions we find that Akin is a good representative for his constituency. I wonder how the Liberal trolls will react or say when he is re-elected?
Are you on drugs? Or just very inbred?
Typical Democrat Liberal response. When someone presents a solid point they cannot argue against they resort to name calling. Do you realize how stupid and ignorant that makes you look?
I know, you should change your name to 'Legitmate' Larry. This was you can bond with your candidate and there will be no doubt whether you're a fringe lunatic or not. Just sayin'. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HA
Larry--you need to get on better drugs. Where did Akin get the notion of "legitimate" rape? Where exactly did he get the notion that women have some sort of secret death rays that can search out and destroy rapists' sperm? The only solid point there is the one on Akin's head.
It doesn't take a liberal or a feminist to point out the idiocy of Akin's beliefs. All it takes is a person with brain.
Larry, if you haven't noticed, one of the main missions of Republicans is to undo Roe vs. Wade.
Even most liberal women agree that abortion is a tragedy and wouldn't choose it themselves, but they want the woman who is affected to be the one to make that decision based on her conscience and her moral and religious beliefs. That is not the business of government to decide women's reproductive choices. If that makes me a "feminazi" then so be that. I don't like abortion either, but if I needed one for a medical reason I would want it done in hospital, not on butcher block table with a coathanger or a knitting needle. THAT is what the Republicans want for women
It's hypocritical that those who wish to end choice in America also want NO education or access to birth control for those who need to know about it most, they have no interest in making it low cost, no interest in their taxes going to educate, feed, or otherwise assist children born in poverty to unwed mothers.
You can't have it both ways. In Europe you don't see the out of wedlock birth or abortion or sexually transmitted disease rates that you do here? WHY? Because everyone is educated on it and has access to getting birth control without any runaround from parental obstruction, the church, or the state, and often free of charge (prepaid by taxes of course, but still, no extra paying)--regardless of wealth or income. So don't start bleating about black women popping out welfare children to get more benefits which is why it happens here...in Europe, they get way better benefits than anyone ever dreamed of here...but they don't keep having kids. My cousin the UK gets to take off a year when her baby is born and her employers all have to rehire her.
To bonehead Larry, if the 'abortion' is a non issue brought up by the democrats...then why is it that Romney has promised if elected he would close down Planned Parenthood....and promised his ultra crazy right wing donors...that he would work to overturn 'Roe vs. Wade'. Man...you are so out-of-the-loop...I don't know where to begin. Ryan and Romney are BOTH behind a BILL that would limit abortions to only those who've been "legitimately" raped only...and actually Ryan doesn't even want those pregancies to be terminated. I wonder how he would feel carrying his criminal rapist's child.
One less bagger / crazie in the Senate
works for me.
Mitt your lying, lies,Lies of the GOP & Paul Ryan TeaWackers, Mitt R. Bain, Citizens United and all the Alec corps : that pays off the RepublicanPUKES Politicians. Its all about the Wealthy getting richer and the middle class getting poorer.....They don't want to help the poor...Who are the one's that leach off the taxpayer. The Wealthy: they get welfare both for themselves an for the Corps. ...But it seems that the Wealthy get away with it ..They steal billions and the few poor steals a few thousands. So what does the GOP want, is Screw the MIddle Class to get even with the few. As I say its the me me me and F everyone else.... The failures of the Republicans party trying to take away SS & Medicare & Health care for Woman so they can give their wealthy Blackmailers more money...To hell with the Poor and Needy. Let them freeze in the winter and stave the Old and Babies, let them die from bad water, do away with the EPA and thats what you'll have, just like all you Tea baggers want...You make me sick with your Me Me Me altitude. Greedy and you all call yourself a REAL Christians, Mormans. What a laugh: Wake up...Sounds like Mitt!!!!!!Fuss up your tax Return: Stop your lieing RYAN:
Like they said during the democratic national convention "Where being a woman is NOT a pre-exiting condition."
My bitch is that they want to peek into my bedroom and see what I am doing. Sounds like a pack of voyeurs to me
Pat...exactly...small government for businesses, but police state control over people's private lives and reproductive lives.
They are a bunch of voyeurs, living vicariously because they sure as heck aren't going to get anything but the missionary position out of their frigid uptight wives, and rarely at that. If you want some fun, find a picture of Ken Starr's wife (grouper faced and unpleasant looking as all get out) and read the Starr Report...you can tell this guy recorded all of Monica Lewinsky's dalliances with Clinton with great delight because he knew that was the only way he would ever know about such things.
i would like to see the women in Virgina have a sex strike. i bet all those ass hat politicians will change their tune really quickly when they can't get none from the lady folk.... not that this has anything to do with MO....
There have got to be poll numbers now in comparison to before he opened mouth and stuck in foot. What are they? The meaning of him staying in depends on those #'s; if he's staying in despite hemorrhaging support, then he's just an ideological self-absorbed idiot; if his support remains, it suggests that he has (too) much in common with his state's voters.
Legitimate Rape....Coming to a polling station near you!
Great!!! More 'legitimate' ammunition for the Democrats to demonstrate how out of their friggin minds some of the crazies the effen eejits in the GOP represent.
GREAT NEWS!!!! . . . another nail in Mittens' coffin. I think it's admirable how the Teabooblicans help each other out, don't you? . . . but remember "Democrats take care of their own" . . . "Teabooblicans take care of only themselves" . . . that's the difference between a winning party and a dysfunctional losing one.
I wouldn't count him out just yet. This is Missouri, a kissin cousin of Kansas and there anything and anybody with a pulse could win. There really are that many strange voters here. Their belief system doesn't need logic nor intelligence and truth be told, he'd fit right in with most people here.
Nobody in Kansas HAS a pulse. I say this to you as a Nebraskan. Believe me, the Teapublican party in my state is dumber than dirt, but the Kansas Teapublicans have them beat by a mile. Missouri might be worse than Kansas.
Wow! Just wow!
I hope and pray....that Akin, Ryan, and Romney....GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is both selfish and a fool for not dropping out of the race.
I will do what Fox News tells me to do.
Pity.
sparky isn't fooling, folks.
Abject surrender to FOX opinion.
Must be nice not missing the necessity of thinking for yourself.
Leaves more time for fishin'.
This has always been the Republican stumbing block. NO man nor government should be able to tell a woman what she can or can't do with her body. Period. Now if you the government to stop paying for or make late term abortions illegal, I'm all for it. But to force a woman to take a pregnancy full term because someone told you you can't have an abortion is bull$h!t. And yes I am a registered republican.
That he did not drop out as called for by his own party, it demonstrates his willing desire to collect that fat check he so desperately needs. I think it is time for him to use his other skills instead of representing people in government, like the shovel ready job waiting for him at the stockyards for which he is imminently qualified.
What we have here is a serial adulterer out pimping for a congenital idiot.
Are Missourians so dumb they'll actually vote for this clod? I bet Harry S Truman is spinning in his grave at the thought.
Doximom,
At last, someone who doesn't place the automatic period after the S in Truman. Hallelujah!
That's maks two of us who realize that S, and only the letter S, was Harry's middle name.
it's. the little things. huh ms.nbcmfe?
Keep in mind folks that the repub party has asked him to resign...as a repub/conserv I disagree with his statement...but there is more to akin than just this one statement..
MO is very anti claire mckaskill...a vote for akin will be a vote against claire and obama..she stood side by side with obama...and Mo went red in the previous elections...akin winning will prove how much mo cannot stand obama and claire..
So Missouri would rather be saddled with with this boob? How dumb are the people in Missouri anyway? So they'd rather have this "legitimate rape", "what do we need science for?" doofus representing them? Anyone with an IQ greater than that of the average ten-penny nail wouldn't vote for him in a one-person race.
so you justify reelecting this moron? I just know that the people of MO can do better. If he is reelected it will only prove just how incredibly disconnected MO is.
Boy, you Lib's are a mess!
Not as big a mess as the Teapublicans. I think Todd Akin should be tied around Richie Rich's neck.
if akin has his way..at least we'll never be a bloody mess....
Is he trying to find some "common sense" on this bus tour? He sure is a goofy rascal.
Gotta love these guys. A young woman just wants to be raped...if she goes out. If you are elderly and on medicare you are one of the 47% taking down the country. If you recognize that for the world to be safe you have to make some friends too you are an appeaser and apologist. My mother and father both became very ill. Even with some help from govt resources they were bankrupted and I guess thats the way Mr. Romney wants it. Thank goodness I do not have a daughter. In the Aiken world she would be fair game.
Alas, Missouri prides itself on being the "Show-me" state, which is to say "Give me a reason" or "Provide me with proof."
Although the motto is unofficial, Missourians look at it with pride as if to say they hold themselves to a higher standard of conservatism, they are stalwart in their firmly held beliefs, and they remain skeptical of any kind of change other than that which is home-grown.
Democrats have a tiger by the tail on this one and there's danger in simply letting go.
Only if played perfectly the rest of the way does McCaskill have the opportunity to steal a victory for Democrats.
Akin will win . Sorry Democrats.
Bama, yes he might, if enough inbred ignoramuses decided to choose anything so repugnant as long as he/she was a Republican. In their tiny minds, anything is preferable to a black president.
Of course, however, they will soon squeal like stuck pigs when the Republicans they voted for cut off their welfare. Did you know that whites receive more welfare than anyone else?
Akin's approval numbers had a significant increase since the alleged controversy and he is leading the democrat challenger. Notice how liberals want to tell others what/how they should act- that he should resign. The fact that his poll #'s shot way up simply confirms the fact that most Americans are conservative. They are not zealous about killing more babies via abortion as the left is. (And the latter claims to have the moral high ground?!?!) Yes, it is a human being, and the circumstances do not make killing an innocent human being justified, not to mention that it adds further harm to the woman in having her have an abortion and live with the often life-long consequences of it.
As usual, if you want to know what the leftist is all about look at what they accuse others of- they claim "conservatives" want to control others but they are the ones who want to dictate what type of food or drink we can have, what type of personal habits we can engage in- e.g., smoking - or where and when we can do it, what we can or cannot do on or with our private property or business, what type of car we should drive, even what we can think or say, as they will only allow their politically correct views to be held and if you dissent you need to be silenced or punished somehow(e.g. chick fil a being outlawed from places because their president voiced his views on homo "marriage") And notice that most of the posts here are proof of this: full of name-calling, vitriol, vulgarity, like children who only know how to call you names. No doubt these folks also style themselves as "tolerant", "loving" and "non-judgmental"...
Chris,
In response to your post about how we liberals want to tell you what to eat (you would be the first to squeal about some person in poverty being a public charge if they required medical care...you want to tell people who they can and can't love, and you all seem to be preoccupied with the sex lives of consenting adults...you guys are the first to whine about how much gasoline costs, but you want to drive a tank..then shut your pie hole.
Don't even get me started on women's reproduction... I will copy part of my earlier post.
My cousin the UK (who is unmarried because the father of her child is a jerk and she works THREE jobs to make ends meet) gets to take off a year when her baby is born and her employers all have to rehire her.
I don't know if it was legitimate or not, but it appears that Mr. Akin has forcibly screwed himself
Possibly the best post of the day! Fanned!
Concerned citizen, it is statements like that, that make me suspect you are a republican do you even know what socialism is or what it looks like? We are far from it and the only modern country who isn't. Socialism if done correctly is not a bad system ask the folks in Canada or Sweden, etc.. their folks live longer and make more money, their child mortality rate is lower. Having said all of that this President is not moving us towards anything but a recovery and I will take him over ANYONE else out there running for the job.
Akin is no different than the rest of the Republicans including Paul Lyan...
Depending on which way the wind is blowing and Akin is winning then Mitt RobMe will stand with him also..
