Today's final deadline for embattled Missouri Republican Senate nominee Todd Akin to withdraw from the race is just hours away, and he has scheduled a news conference at 3:00 pm ET.
Is he potentially dropping out of the contest?
Not a chance, his campaign says.
"Staying in the race, as we've said," Ryan Hite, the campaign's communications director, said in a text message to NBC News.
"Just kicking off bus tour today and talking about Missouri Commonsense values as the bus tour title suggests," Hite continued. "Nothin[g] earth shattering."

According to Akin's campaign website, the Missouri Common Sense Bus Tour launches today and runs through Friday.
*** UPDATE *** Declaring that he "was given a trust" after winning a three-way Republican primary contest in August, Akin this afternoon affirmed he wouldn't quit his senate race.
"Over the period of the last number of weeks, a number of people have asked me, 'Are you quitting, are you dropping out?" Akin told supporters this afternoon. He added, "I don't believe that that is really my decision. The decision was made by the voters of the state of Missouri."
The event, meant to mark the kickoff of Akin's bus tour, was billed as a press conference, though Akin didn't take questions from the media.

The way I see it, what Akin is really saying, underscores the arrogant mind-set of white male privilege in America...
Even thought he's proven himself to be an absolute sexist, his white male image won't allow him to "concede ground!"
Funny, the habitual liar, the women who is a democrat running against Scott Walker, who lied about her Native American heritage to get a position at Harvard, and who it is now know practised law without a license, get a free pass at "mistakes" but they try to hammer a guy that has a good record.

Hey, we the state that elected a dead man to represent us in the Senate in 2000. You can never count Akin out in this state. McCaskill's basically what the Republican's would be today if they had not let the party be hijacked by the ultra right. Liberal Democrats don't exist in Missouri anymore. We're all about guns, God, no taxes, repealing the law that says you can't marry your first cousin, and eliminating social programs for people too lazy to work. Evolution? Ah...you gonna have to 'show me' that God didn't create this earth for I be believin' it. Just try an use your fancy high-minded liberal science to prove God don't exist. Can't do it, can ya?

Don't count Akin out. This is one of those "he is a stupid SOB, but he is our stupid SOB" situations and there are many in the "show me state" who will quietly vote for this guy although he is incredibly out of touch with reality. The goal of the right wing "extremists" in the Party becomes frighteningly clear when an individual with an obvious disdain for basic science is given a position involving this critical field in our national legislative body. This is a State not unlike Kansas where "intelligent design" is considered a legitimate education subject so anything is possible.
Both Kansas and Missouri are far more 'southern' than they want to admit! They have the same kind of bible belt mentality and that determines their voting tendancy or lack thereof.

States that take more than they pay in taxes "should" be "fired".

I wish all politicians would saw exactly what was on their mind. Science "facts", race issues, whatever pops into their heads. It's easy to single out Akin, but he is merely symbolic of what the entire Republican Party has become. While they still mouth the "fiscal responsibility" talking points they always have, the party has unwittingly allowed the social conservatives (which actually has nothing to do with Republicanism) to take control of the party. As a result, these social conservatives, which have platforms of mean-spiritedness, anti-science, anti-education, evangelism, segregation, and anti-civil rights, have been trying to move society backward for 20 years now. Unfortunately for them, the bulk of society has moved forward and will have nothing to do with it. Reality is always progressive in the long run--and the US is long overdue for a big step forward.

When we go to vote, we need to realize that ALL republicans think just like he does, it's just that a few of them don't say it in public. Larry - I think you may be confused by what the Republican party used to be, compared to what they are now. Now they stand for tax breaks...for the rich. Smaller gov't, except when it comes to legistlating the rights of homosexuals and women. Advocating small business? Ha, tell that to Wall Street, the Koch Bros and the Wal-Mart Corporation, all destroyers of small business. Who is de-regulation really taylored for?

This is a poorly written article. How/why does someone write an article about an embattled candidate's decision to stay in the race without stating why the candidate is embattled in the first place? If I paid for this I would feel gypped, but since it's free I just feel like being a jerk and pointing out your glaring omission.
The story made the national news on why he is embattled. Google his "Legitimate Rape" story. As a typical Repug, he used that statement and teed off half the population in this country
