First Thoughts: Saturation

Good luck trying to avoid Obama, Romney today. They’ll be doing interviews and high-profile speeches in the media capital of the world … Romney wins a news cycle … The risk for Obama in trying to do no harm in meeting with foreign leaders … In UN speech, Obama to take on two Romney criticisms … This might be Romney’s make-or-break-week in Ohio … The shrunken battleground (what happened to PA, NM and what does it mean for the future of politics) … Obama up in new polls in OH, FL, PA, NC … Akin’s drop dead deadline … And Massachusetts Senate race takes a nasty turn. … And just 1,000 hours to Election Day – tick, tick, tick.

NBC's Domenico Montanaro discusses the busy day ahead on the 2012 campaign trail with both President Obama and Mitt Romney keeping busy schedules full of speeches and interviews.

*** Saturation: We’re now inside 1,000 hours to Election Day (can you believe it!?!?!), and get ready to see A LOT of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, starting with a near unprecedented level of media saturation. Let’s run through the schedule: the two candidates are holding high-profile speeches -- with world leaders and a former popular president and both appear in interviews for NBC’s “Education Nation” – all in the media capital of the world. On top of that, Romney will appear in distinct interviews today that will air on NBC, MSNBC, CNN and Fox and that doesn’t count the usual slate of local TV interviews. Bottom line: It’s going to be nearly impossible to miss either of them today. And New Yorkers, by the way, good luck with the traffic. Here’s the rundown: 7:00 am hour: Clip of Obama’s interview with NBC on Education Nation aired on TODAY. 9:00 am ET: Romney speaks at the Clinton Global Initiative. 10:00 am ET: Obama addresses the United Nations General Assembly. 11:00 am ET: Obama interview on The View airs. 11:00 am ET: Romney interviewed by NBC’s Brian Williams at Education Nation (then heads to Vandalia, OH, for a 3:00 pm ET rally with Paul Ryan and Sen. Rand Paul). Noon ET: Obama speaks at CGI (then returns to Washington). That’s a lot of Obama and Romney.

*** Romney wins a news cycle: While both will be very public today, what will be interesting to see is if Romney’s doing as much attacking today as he did yesterday. It’s not likely. His speech at CGI, for example, will focus on his vision for foreign assistance and he’s presenting a fairly interesting public-private idea for foreign assistance that will likely get lost in partisan attacks but deserves some attention. Back to the raw politics -- yesterday, Romney and his campaign had a plan and they executed. Sure, some will say they were chasing the news cycle, but they were chasing with a plan. They had a point they wanted to drive home – on “bumps in the road” before the UN General Assembly and did so with mini interviews with all the networks and were on message. They were able to win a news cycle, which right now, a one-day win is important compared with what they’ve been through over the last three weeks starting with Clint Eastwood.

*** The harm in trying to do no harm: With football on the minds of many today (after last night’s refereeing debacle – full disclosure: one of us is a big Packers fan), Obama’s plan today has a whiff of prevent defense. What it’s doing – like in a prevent – is it allowing the opposition to pick up yards over the middle and get a couple of first downs. If you compare former President Bush’s 2004 schedule at the U.N. and Obama’s it’s a pretty big difference. It made sense politically for Bush to meet with world leaders, given that his election was largely about foreign policy, and we get Obama’s strategy – first, do no harm, don’t make any news before the debates, take the criticism from the “media elites.” But it doesn’t show a lot of courage -- and winding up on The View (and not doing one-on-one meetings with foreign leaders while they are conveniently in NYC) makes him subject to criticism from the right. If foreign policy is supposed to be one of Obama’s strengths and multilateralism is a hallmark of his policy, why wouldn’t Obama want to HIGHLIGHT that? Why wouldn’t he want to meet with both Israel’s Netanyahu and Egypt’s Morsi? And above politics, it’s striking with all that’s going on in the Arab world that the ostensible leader of the free world is not meeting with anyone. For their part, the Obama folks are counting on the public not caring about this issue as much as the Romney campaign or the media. And perhaps they will be proven right. After all, Mr. and Mrs. Ohio will see the president address the United Nations. Sure looks like he’s dealing with foreign affairs.

President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and Joy Behar talk during a break in a taping of "The View" at ABC Studios September 24, 2012 in New York, New York.

*** Obama to take on two Romney criticisms: All of that said, Obama is addressing the U.N., and that speech, according to excerpts, will likely make the “bumps in the road” attack seem pretty petty. Obama will say, per prepared remarks, "The attacks of the last two weeks are not simply an assault on America. They are also an assault on the very ideals upon which the United Nations was founded.” He will add, “We must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations." On Iran, Obama will say, “America wants to resolve this issue through diplomacy, and we believe that there is still time and space to do so. But that time is not unlimited.” And: “The United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon." Those statements on Libya and Iran go right to the heart of two of Romney’s chief criticisms – that the president said developments in the Middle East and North Africa were “bumps in the road,” and that Obama hasn’t been tough enough on Iran. By the way, we mentioned The View above, Obama did talk foreign policy on the show and largely admitted the attacks were terrorism: "There's no doubt that the kind of weapons that were used, the ongoing assault, that it wasn't just a mob action." Speaking of “bumps,” flashback to 2005, when then-Bush foreign policy adviser, now Romney foreign policy adviser Dan Senor said of violence in Iraq: “It's democracy. We often said that when we're there, democracy is messy. If you want clean and tidy, there's dictatorship.”

*** Romney’s make-or-break week for Ohio: We noted yesterday the importance of Ohio in this presidential election and to Romney. But it’s hard to overstate it – this may be the make-or-break week for the campaign in the state. If this week’s bus tour doesn’t move the needle, as the Romney campaign might say, they very well could decide to all but write off the Buckeye State. They won’t say it explicitly; they’ll go through the motions, but they may have no choice than to try and shore up or make in roads in places like Wisconsin, Colorado Florida, and Virginia.

*** Cheap applause line alert for Battleground Wisconsin: Which candidate takes a stand against replacement refs? Does Paul Ryan do it, given he’s a Packers fan? Something to watch today perhaps. Ryan holds a rally in Cincinnati at 11:30 am ET.

*** Ad spending – the shrunken battleground: Last presidential cycle, then-candidate Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain were running ads in 21 states, according to SMG Delta – Obama (21): AZ, CO, FL, GA, IN, IA, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, NV, NH, NM, NC, ND, OH, PA, VA, WV, and WI; McCain (16): CO, FL, IN, IA, ME, MN, MO, NV, NH, NM, NC, OH, PA, VA, WV, WI. This week, both campaigns are spending (so far) $19 million in the exact same states and there are just nine of them – IA, CO, FL, NC, NH, NV, OH, VA, and WI, with one outside group (Restore Our Future) running almost $1 million in ads in MI. Just look at all those states from last time to this. It’s a striking shift – the candidates are spending more money in fewer states and in fewer markets. Nowhere, by the way, that’s left out jumps out more than Pennsylvania and New Mexico. If this election is supposed to be like 2004, remember, George W. Bush only lost the Keystone state 2.5 points and he WON New Mexico (albeit by less than a point). It highlights, once again, how Romney has to largely run the table in these toss-up states and -- in the bigger political picture for the future – how the changing demographics currently favor Democrats. (With outside groups factored in, total spending is more than $33 million, with Team Romney outspending Team Obama $18.8 million to $14.5 million.)

*** Polling update – Obama up in FL, OH: Speaking of Ohio, another poll shows Obama with a sizable lead. A Washington Post poll has Obama up 52-44%. … In Florida, the Post has Obama up 51-47%. … In Pennsylvania, a Mercyhurst University poll shows the president with a 48-40% lead. … And in North Carolina, a Civitas poll (conducted by National Research) shows Obama up 49-45%.

*** Akin, remember that? And Massachusetts gets nasty: Today’s the drop dead deadline for Todd Akin (R) to drop out of the Missouri Senate race. Remember that story? It’s not going to happen. Watch your TV sets in Missouri at 5:01 pm for those McCaskill ads featuring Republicans obliterating Akin. … In Massachusetts, the Senate race has taken a nasty turn – focusing again on Elizabeth Warren’s Native American claims. Both candidates don’t seem to particularly like each other and it’s getting personal. There’s some risk for Brown here though -- if he goes too far, he might make Warren look like a victim. There’s a fine line here. You do wonder if he needs to dial it back a little. By the way, the new tack probably means Brown’s polling shows him down.

*** Education Nation – starkly different visions: As part of NBC’s Education Nation, First Read will have a detailed look later this morning at where the candidates stand on education. The subject has peeked into the 2012 campaign with Obama's push for low-interest student loans, Romney's contrasting views (“shop around”) on how to pay for college, Obama seizing on comments Romney made on class sizes for a TV ad, and of course debate over proposed domestic cuts in the Ryan budget. But, like on so many other issues, Obama and Romney would take starkly different approaches, if elected. Obama would likely try to expand many of the same initiatives he has pursued in his first term -- a reform-minded agenda implemented largely through the Department of Education and outside the purview of Congress. That agenda includes content standards that will be implemented in at least 45 states by 2014. Obama, who has not always been in the favor of the teachers’ unions that strongly support him, would continue to try and implement reforms while working with the unions. Romney, on the other hand, takes a more adversarial approach to unions, which he sees, in large measure, as part of the problem. Romney’s plan calls for vouchers and a restructuring of funding for special-needs and low-income students that would assign money directly to individuals instead of schools and school districts.

MSNBC's Steve Benen has been keeping track of Mitt Romney's LIES over the last 30 weeks. He has chronicled 533 Romney lies.

Here are the links: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXI, XXII, XXIII, XXIV, XXV, XXVI, XXVII, XXVIII, XXIX, XXX.

Even when clearly exposed, Romney keeps on rolling them out. We're under a barrage of GOP candidate in-your-face whoppers that come fast and furiously, because win-at-all-costs rules the Rove day.

Romney's pollster, "We're not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers."

From the GOP side - gone are the Queensbury Rules and gentlemanly cigars. Factor in post-Citizens' United, and it is all slash and burn. Their strategy is to bully 300 million people into submission, and numb our responses -- until the final death of GOP ethics feels like business as usual.

Unacceptable.

So, President Sub-2%GDP Growth 3+ years after the end of the recession, and President 43 Straight Months of 8%+ unemployment, is saying the country wouldn’t “thrive” under President Romney??

Has Barry been living under a rock listening to a continuous loop of all his wonderful speeches, and delusionally believing EVERY word of them??

If people want to see an example of the U.S. “surviving, not thriving” just take a look at the results of the Barry Presidency.

America can’t afford four more years of Jimmy Carter’s second term malaise.

Obama: Under Romney, U.S. would 'survive,' but not 'thrive'

By JOSH GERSTEIN |

9/24/12 6:26 PM EDT

NEW YORK — President Barack Obama suggested Monday that electing Republican nominee Mitt Romney as president wouldn't be a disaster for the country, but would leave the U.S. in a state of malaise.

"What would be so terrible if Mitt Romney were elected? Would it be disastrous for the country?" veteran TV journalist Barbara Walters asked Obama during a taping of "The View."

"We can survive a lot. But the American people don't want to just survive. We want to thrive. I've just got a different vision of how we grow an economy. We grow fastest when the middle class is doing well," Obama said.

What Romney Doesn't Know About Seniors:

1.Most seniors have worked almost all of their adult life, are responsible and do not view themselves as victims.

2.By paying payroll taxes seniors have paid into Social Security and Medicare. These programs are not entitlements; they are benefits that seniors have paid for in advance of their retirement.

3.Once a senior retires from the workforce, their primary source of income drops from a salary or living wage to Social Security plus any investments they have made when they were younger.

4.Seniors worry about their health as it declines with age. Seniors need their Medicare and Medicaid to help pay for their doctor visits, surgeries, nursing home expenses and prescriptions. They do not want privatized Couponcare which Paul Ryan is offering as an alternative.

5.Seniors worry about the possibility of not having enough money to pay for shelter, food, and medical costs. They do not want to choose between buying food and paying for their meds.

6.Smart seniors know that their investments made money during the Bill Clinton years and lost nearly half of their savings in the latter days of the Bush 43 administration.

7.Seniors do not want to die poor and would love to give something to their children to make their life easier.

Most people on First Read know all of the above points because they are not a part of the 1 %ers. But Romney has no idea what seniors think and feel.

In the Romney world retirement means continuing to live off your investments.

In the Romney world social security is small potatoes.

In the Romney world Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are programs that are expendable because the wealthy can get along without them.

In the Romney world you don't worry about money for food or medications.

In the Romney world you don't worry about "those people" in nursing homes because you are never going to be there.

Willard Romney is clueless about how many seniors live and it's too late for him to learn. His lack of concern will cost him the election on November 6th.

Romney Wins Decisively, Revisited

Yesterday, a few of the usual left wing suspects took issue with my post regarding the pro-Obama bias of many of the polls out there. In particular, Houston accused me of not knowing what I was talking about and suggested that if any pollster modeled their 2012 polling samples according to 2008 election results they would be "laughed out of the business." Actually Houston, the chortling you hear in the background is folks laughing at you. You really need to get out of the house more, it might improve your disposition – and maybe even help you craft an intelligent post.

http://www.dickmorris.com/why-the-polls-under-state-romney-vote/

Then our cuddly friend tried the common leftist tactic of deflect and reframe by opining that Rasmussen was among the least accurate pollsters in the 2010 congressional races. Ummm, I thought we were parsing the results of this year's presidential polling not congressional polling. So a more relevant citation might be this one that shows Rasmussen in the top two most accurate pollsters in the 2008 presidential campaign. Notice that most MSM polling organizations failed to give their readers a final accurate reading, including such "icons" like NBC/WSJ, CBS/NYT and ABC/WaPo.

http://www.fordham.edu/images/academics/graduate_schools/gsas/elections_and_campaign_/poll%20accuracy%20in%20the%202008%20presidential%20election.pdf

Despite what Houston would have us believe, most pollsters are using 2008 turnout results to model their 2012 poll samples which is why they end up oversampling Democrats and show Obama with a lead. But Rasmussen doesn't do that. On the theory that voter turnout in 2008 was abnormally high among certain groups because of the Obama enthusiasm factor (e.g. among blacks and college age folks), Rasmussen tempers those numbers by adding the more historically normal turnout results from 2004 into his analysis. That approach shows a much tighter race than what MSM polling is telling us. Even more, it tells us that Obama is heavily dependent on a repeat of the historically high turnout he received from these groups in 2008 if he is to have a reasonable chance to win in 2012. Add into the mix the fact that undecideds tend to break against the incumbent and Obama is looking at a steep uphill climb.

Romney not only wins, he wins decisively. Some folks just can't handle the truth.

Today’s WSJ has an editorial that puts the lie to one of Barry’s favorite “blame GWB” dodges to questions on his many years of TRILLION dollar deficits:

Barry: "When I came into office, I inherited the biggest deficit in our history”

The actual truth: Either Mr. Obama inherited the largest deficit in American history or he won the 1944 election, but both can't be true. The biggest annual deficit the modern government has ever run was in 1943, equal to 30.3% of the economy, to mobilize for World War II. The next biggest years were the following two, at 22.7% and 21.5%, to win it.

The deficit in fiscal 2008 was a mere 3.2% of GDP. The deficit in fiscal 2009, which began on October 1, 2008 and ran through September 2009, soared to 10.1%, the highest since 1945.

Ron and Job1, good morning.

About the chronicled 533 Romney lies:

"This is documented. Proven. Validated, verified, demonstrated, catalogued and quantified." (Fred Clark, WA Monthly)

"This has produced what James Fallows calls the "post-truth" age — a relentlessly dishonest onslaught of brazen falsehoods with which the media and the political system are struggling to cope. What do you do when every article, every "fact-check," every arbiter denounces a lie and corrects it, but then a politician just keeps repeating it?"

Mitt Romney has lied "more than any other national candidate for office" in our lifetimes. Romney absolutely NOT presidential material. Not anywhere close.

Backhouse, well said. 533 Romney whopper lies, that is a staggering number. For someone who claims to be religious, it seems Romney and his VP Ryan, disregard "thou shalt no lie". Who knew that lieing could provide a job for someone willing to track it.

Ron, well said. The Romney's idea of hardship is having their college education paid for by the folks, and cashing in their stocks to pay the bills. It is no surprise that Mitt Romney simply does not grasp life in the "real" world.

Anna Molly: Too bad about last night’s Packers loss. My condolences.

Here’s a way for you to think about it that should warm your lefty liberal heart: Last year the Packers did fabulously well with 15 wins and 1 loss. (We shall not speak of the playoff loss to the NY Giants) After a great year like that for the Packers, it is the football governing official’s responsibility to take some this year’s wins away from them and re-distribute them to less well off teams.

You see AM, it’s not about how hard the Packers worked for all those wins, or whether they earned them playing by the rules, it’s ALL about “fairness”.

LOL!!!

Albany Joe (quoting) --

"What would be so terrible if Mitt Romney were elected? Would it be disastrous for the country?" veteran TV journalist Barbara Walters asked Obama during a taping of "The View."

If he opens the windows at 30,000 feet, it sure would be.

Because then we'd get Paul Ryan.

Seriously.

After a great year like that for the Packers, it is the football governing official’s responsibility to take some this year’s wins away from them and re-distribute them to less well off teams.

LoL Good one, Joe. One of your best, really.

You're joking, but in reality, I actually think the league does redistribute, or tries to, with draft order and such. And don't forget, they have those nasty unions, too. Or are unions less nasty when the members make millions of dollars.

Redistribution is fine. I just wish that they could have done it a bit more subtly last night.

Sheesh. And thanks for the condolences. I know just how sincere you are.

Top 10 Dumbest Mitt Romney Quotes So Far

By Daniel Kurtzman, About.com Guide

1. "Corporations are people, my friend… of course they are. Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to the people. Where do you think it goes? Whose pockets? Whose pockets? People's pockets. Human beings, my friend." —Mitt Romney to a heckler at the Iowa State Fair who suggested that taxes should be raised on corporations as part of balancing the budget (August 2011)

  1. 2. "When you have a fire in an aircraft, there's no place to go, exactly, there's no -- and you can't find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don't open. I don't know why they don't do that. It's a real problem." –Mitt Romney, suggesting it would be a good idea to crack a window at 35,000 feet, Beverly Hills fundraiser, Sept. 22, 2012
  1. 3. "I like being able to fire people who provide services to me." –Mitt Romney, using an unfortunate choice of words while advocating for consumer choice in health insurance plans (January 2012)
  2. 4. "I'm not concerned about the very poor. We have a safety net there." —Mitt Romney (January 2012)

5. "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. ... My job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives." -Mitt Romney, in leaked comments from a fundraiser in May 2012

6. "My dad, as you probably know, was the governor of Michigan and was the head of a car company. But he was born in Mexico... and had he been born of, uh, Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot at winning this. But he was unfortunately born to Americans living in Mexico. He lived there for a number of years. I mean, I say that jokingly, but it would be helpful to be Latino." -Mitt Romney, in leaked comments from a Florida fundraiser, May 17 2012

7. "It's hard to know just how well [the 2012 London Olympics] will turn out. There are a few things that were disconcerting. The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials, that obviously is not something which is encouraging." –Mitt Romney, insulting Britain on the eve of the Olympics by suggesting the country is not ready, NBC News interview, July 25, 2012

8. "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised." —Mitt Romney, speaking about his Michigan roots during a rally in Commerce, Michigan, Aug. 24, 2012

9. "I should tell my story. I'm also unemployed." —Mitt Romney, speaking in 2011 to unemployed people in Florida. Romney's net worth is over $200 million.

10. "I believe in an America where millions of Americans believe in an America that's the America millions of Americans believe in. That's the America I love." –Mitt Romney (January 2012)

There is so much to choose from but I really have to put this one at the top of my list;

"Well, we do provide care for people who don't have insurance," he said in an interview with Scott Pelley of CBS's "60 Minutes" that aired Sunday night. "If someone has a heart attack, they don't sit in their apartment and die. We pick them up in an ambulance, and take them to the hospital, and give them care. And different states have different ways of providing for that care."

This constitutes a dramatic reversal in position for Romney, who passed a universal health care law in Massachusetts, in part, to eliminate the costs incurred when the uninsured show up in emergency rooms for care. Indeed, in both his book and in high-profile interviews during the campaign, Romney has touted his achievement in stamping out these inefficiencies while arguing that the same thing should be done at the national level.

And while Romney refused to agree on Sunday that the government's role is to ensure that every American has health care, he has endorsed such an idea in the past.

When asked in a March 2010 interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" whether he believes in universal coverage, Romney said, "Oh, sure."

"Look, it doesn't make a lot of sense for us to have millions and millions of people who have no health insurance and yet who can go to the emergency room and get entirely free care for which they have no responsibility, particularly if they are people who have sufficient means to pay their own way," he said.

As someone said, he really needs to debate himself maybe then he’ll know what position he holds…….but then again, wait a few and that will change.

Oh really?? Why the cover up then?

What cover-up is that, Sirie? The cover-up where you pull out the tinfoil and wrap it around your entire head vs. the usual tinfoil hat. Do you also use the engine block cooking method to cook up your conspiracies, you know, where you lay your tinfoil wrapped head on a hot engine and let it 'bake' up ideas?

There isn't a single one-theory reason for the uprisings in North Africa/Mideast and other Muslim nations. Intelligence doesn't come neatly wrapped up in a 1/4 page memo. Well, maybe it does in your mind of half-baked ideas.

Maybe you could give us some of your keen insight into the Romney "Window" conspiracy - you know the one where he doesn't really want the presidency, but rather he is using it to jump start a new venture capital scheme to start an investment group into roll down windows in jet airliners. Conspiring minds want to know .. did Romney cause the mishap on Queen Ann's plane to promote the idea? Was the fire started by the Chinese, who have already manufactured the wind-up knobs? Surely your engine-block-baked head has the answers.

Smart seniors know that their investments made money during the Bill Clinton years and lost nearly half of their savings in the latter days of the Bush 43 administration.

Do these "Smart seniors" realize the value of their investments have depreciated because of inflation due to quantitative easing? It's tough when a gallon of milk costs the same as a gallon of gas.

What's astonishing is the lack of seeing the big picture exhibited by those on the Left.

Seniors do not want to die poor and would love to give something to their children to make their life easier.

So we'll put you on the record as being against inheritance taxes.

By paying payroll taxes seniors have paid into Social Security and Medicare. These programs are not entitlements; they are benefits that seniors have paid for in advance of their retirement

These programs are also "pay-as-you-go" systems that have nothing but a bunch of IOUs to back up their obligations. All the money was borrowed (stolen) by the government over the years. Now Liberals want the government to have even more of the peoples money so they can mismanage it even more.

Obama on 60 minutes, when asked about his foreign policy. Touted getting out of Iraq, punising al-qaeda, and killing Osama. Lets see would this be possible if were not for George Bush, both of them? Obama used Bush's time line for exiting Iraq! Drones were created in the late 80s early 90s by pushing the CIA and the Pentagon to create spy planes with an increased budget sponsored by REPUBLICANS! Whose intelligence was used in finding Osama? Obama created a new special branch of guvment to find Osama? Or did he just say yes?

Speaking of a most bizarre football season so far -

Think Progress:

After the Green Bay Packers were robbed of a win by an blown call during Monday Night Football, union-busting Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) — a Packers fan — took to Twitter this morning to demanded the return of the league’s unionized officials.

Walker’s sudden support of union labor is surprising, given his push for a radical union-busting law that effectively ended collective bargaining for many of Wisconsin’s public employees. The law, which Walker and his fellow Republicans pitched as necessary to fix Wisconsin’s budget before admitting that it was the “first step” in an anti-union strategy, was so unpopular that it led to massive protests outside the state capitol in Madison and recall elections against Walker and six Republicans in the state senate.

Multiple Packers players, incidentally, urged Wisconsinites to vote against Walker in the recall. And while Walker decries the scab officials who replaced union labor on the football field, he doesn’t hold himself to the same standard: after his union-busting law went into effect, union workers were replaced with prison labor.

Joe,

$1.3 trillion deficit left by Bush is the largest deficit in American history. The 1944 number you cite may be the largest %age ever in the midst of WWII with wage and price controls and rationing in place. Hardly, a fair comparison.

Here's a number. Before the Great Depression, the top 1% earned 24% of our nation's annual income. The resulting oversupply (too much production capacity) and too little demand for goods and services (the 99% had only 76% of nation's income) was a main cause of the great Depression.

Fast forward to 1980 when the top 1% only earned 10% of the nation's income. We were faced then with inflation driven by rising gas prices fueled by OPEC production limits and the Iran situation.

32 years of more and more tax cuts for the rich (in the name of trickle down economics) and business' taking a bigger share of American productivity increases and the exporting of jobs led to the top 1% now making 24% of our nation's income.

Now, we again see too much production capacity and insufficient consumer demand. This redistribution of income from 1980 to today has enriched the top 1% while burying the middle class in debt. The 99% have seen their share of national income reduced by almost 15% in this period while the top 1% have seen their share increase by 240%.

Our economy suffers from this imbalance, yet Romney's plan for economic growth revolves around more tax cuts for the rich and, assuming a revenue neutral tax plan, huge tax increases for the middle class.

To take an underlying problem and make it worse (income distribution), is not a solution. It is insanity. Romney knows how to make money, but he obviously does not understand how our economy performs best.

Romney will be bad for growth, bad for the economy, great for the rich, and bad for the middle class.

Romney Wins Decisively, Revisited

Yet another post detailing the supposed flawed methodology of the major polling organizations. Either you are much more intelligent and insightful than those pollsters, or there is a massive conspiracy afoot.

What possible reason would any seemingly unbiased polling organization have in presenting inaccurate results? Why would a liberal-leaning poll try to convey a false sense of security which could result in lower voter turnout? Why would Fox News use a methodology that would show President Obama with a lead?

If you were correct in your assumption, then surely someone in Romney's campaign would have seen the same flaws and adjusted their internal polling to be more accurate. If that indeed happened then why has the Romney campaign stopped spending money in some of the 2004 "swing" states?

I think it is laughable that you presume to know more about accurate polling methods than ALL of the individuals working for the pollsters who are paid to be accurate.

I also find humorous your contention that Rassmussen has the most accurate pollng methods. Scott Rassmussen is obviously biased, and the Rassmussen method of using an automated system to call land-line phones has some major flaws. Rassmussen historically has switched to using a mix of cell phones late in the contests in an attempt to appear more accurate. You can ignore the 2010 accuracy if you wish, but it exposes a Republican bias and flaws in their polling methodology.

The only poll that really matters, however, is the one on November 6th. Cling to your unsubstantiated belief that Romney will win "decisively", maybe it will bring you some comfort in the dark days ahead for Romney supporters.

There is a huge difference between private unions and government unions in which collective bargaining is banned by the federal government and should be in hte local and state governments because you are negotiating with the people you put in office. Further, there arent any rights you need to protect in government jobs that you dont already have under statute.

AM--interesting response from both you and Seeking Sanity yesterday that I just read. I am not sure I fully understood your response because I really didnt see any reply and where you provided that data to show how the poor, middle class and minorities have benefited under the Obama economic policies. Instead, you and other continue to attack Bain or private equity and shrug off that its different than a small business owner that uses leverage to invest and expand. What a bunch of crock. My business is currently a very small investor in a large multibillion investment with very well known public private equity firm in a distressed real estate deal. Yes, they fired employees, yes they leveraged the company greatly and yes they invested in the underlying company and assets. Guess what, 3 years later profits are up over 25%, the company survived and doesnt have to lay off the remainder of the employees and now can rehire as it will make it. Will the PE firm makes lots of money of course, but they took the risk and improved operations and now the company isnt distressed. Thats what PE firms do and this concept that Bain is somehow bad because a bunch of people dont like republicans or Mitt Romney is just plain stupid. Seeking Sanity type stupid. Attacking Bain as a way of somehow diminishing Romney is just as bad as the right wingers attacking Obama for representing slum landlords when he was a lawyer/community activist or his relationship with Tony Rezco or his legal representation of mainly wealthy politically connected minorities before starting his political career. Hardly the man of the people but I dont think those things diminish him at all a a democratic candidate. Why not spend the time telling us what he has done for minorities, the poor and middle class over the last 4 years.

I love the poster who used the old 90% top bracket as a way to justify somehow that era had better tax policy. I hope that person realizes that 90% didnt apply to all types of income just like today and that tax payments are actually more progressive now than then so maybe we should go back to those days because the top effective rate and government revenue collections would actually be regressive compared to today.

Ron--you do know that seniors control over 80% of the wealth in this country in the aggregate so put that in context of your comments that make no sense. Current payroll taxes dont come close to covering payouts so unfortunately social security and medicare do qualify as government assistance, welfare or entitlements whatever characterization you want to use and you do realize that Ryan's plan doesnt impact current seniors so what is Obama's plan to deal with the coming entitlement problems since Ryan's is so bad?

You've got to be kidding. Morris is a Fox News stooge, and typical of Fox News stooges, he gives no evidence to back up his nonsense. All REPUTABLE polls weight their numbers according to U.S. Census figures as well as other scientific surveys that are done more frequently than the Census, which only comes out every 10 years. Quite to the contrary of what Morris claims, future turnout of various groups is what pollsters try to predict based on questions about enthusiasm and so forth, not something that is assumed. Here's what Pew Research Center says about party affiliation, which RWNJs are always whining about (note the text where I made the font bold):

http://www.people-press.org/2012/08/03/party-affiliation-and-election-polls/

Party identification is another thing entirely. Most fundamentally, it is an attitude, not a demographic. To put it simply, party identification is one of the aspects of public opinion that our surveys are trying to measure, not something that we know ahead of time like the share of adults who are African American, female, or who live in the South. Particularly in an election cycle, the balance of party identification in surveys will ebb and flow with candidate fortunes, as it should, since the candidates themselves are the defining figureheads of those partisan labels. Thus there is no timely, independent measure of the partisan balance that polls could use for a baseline adjustment.

Defeat from the Jaws of Victory...September 25th

With the current state of the race, and I agree with (soon to be labeled by someone here as "Right wing Columnist") Howard Fineman;

-------------------------------------------------------

Like his boxing hero Ali, Obama is floating like a butterfly -- essentially untouched -- thus far in his presidential prizefight with Mitt Romney.

And that is not good for anybody: for the country, for the voters, for the political parties or even for Obama and his administration.

If American democracy is to work -- if we are to prevent the blood from clotting in the body politic -- presidential elections must be real contests over real ideas and real records, informed by real facts.

This campaign hasn't really been any of those things.

Presidents do not deserve to be reelected by default. If they did, why would anyone expect that a second term to be any better or wiser?

And elected leaders need to be held to account -- pinned up against the wall, so to speak -- if citizens aren't to become utterly disillusioned with the idea that we live in a system of democratic self-government.

On the surface, it is ridiculous to say that a president whose foes have dumped hundreds of millions of dollars worth of ads on his head is "untouched."

It also is ridiculous to say that a president who has been hit with non-stop ridicule, contempt and even xenophobic hatred from some precincts of the Republican/conservative opposition is "untouched."

But that is the truth.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/howard-fineman/barack-obama-floating-like-a-butterfly_b_1911017.html

-------------------------------------------------------------

Those on the right have lately been reduced to accusing the media and every polling entity, from colleges to Bloomberg and even Rasmussen, of being "in the tank" for the President. As the "battleground" and "swing" states recede in the challenger's rear view mirror and with "intrade" at 72.5 in the incumbent's favor.
The President is winning because his challenger is LOSING. Governor Romney and his "brain-trust" have been "waiting" for the President to self-destruct, are now reduced to putting all of their chips on the first debate.

That isn't a strategy...

"It made sense politically for Bush to meet with world leaders, given that his election was largely about foreign policy, and we get Obama’s strategy – first, do no harm, don’t make any news before the debates, take the criticism from the “media elites.”

Like it or not the President of the United States is considered the leader of the "free world". The world is preparing to jump into economic disaster, which tends to lead to diversionary fights with neighbors, which tends to lead to regional wars, which history has shown leads to world wide wars- especially in our latest integrated global economic model where everyone is likely to go down with overspending and leveraging against each other. So at this time the real leaders have to step up and many nations look to the US as a leader.

When President Obama decides that he would rather not make waves or go on TV instead of burning the midnight oil with world leaders it presents a clear lack of strength from the US. Most of the world sees us as one of the last superpowers and when we appear to be fawltering, so they sit back and keep quiet or see what happens next because they don't have the power we do. This also emboldens our enemies (N. Korea, Russia, China, Iran, etc.) to step up their actions around the world because we won't step up to stop them. As example, this is the perfect time for China to make a move against Japan or it's other neighbors because it's an easy call that President Obama would just go on camera and say that the US doesn't condone China's actions- no threats or actions to protect an allie.

That's what you should be worried about people, not the media he said, he said BS that dominates the press lately.

Division works. Class warfare works. Racism works. Lack of accomplishments and all those broken promises can be overlooked. Eventually even liberals will some day have to return from fantasy land. Now that Obama has done The View, again, maybe he has earned another vacation. Or some golf. Hoops. Or another concert at the White House. Obama should at least take AF1 out for another spin. Obama love the president the ride, but the actual job not so much.

Rick, the Republicans came up with Romney - a total failure as governor of Massachusetts so your claim is less than reasonable.

The president has made many gaffe's over the past few weeks. How many of them are reported by the main stream media? If anyone were to guess, they'd say the president is picture perfect. He isn't making any mistakes at all. The propaganda flowing from National Barak Consortium (NBC), All Barak Continuously (ABC), Complete Barak Silliness (CBS) and Communist News Network (CNN) has the nation believing that Obama walks on air... forget water, he can levitate.

The reason liberals hate Fox is because they do make an attempt to show the flaws in candidate Obama. Any flaw exposed makes for an angry liberal.

Most legitimate polls are oversampling democrats by 6% to 13%. They are basing this on the number of voters that voted in 2008.

No they aren't. Repeating this crap doesn't make it true. As Romney and other Republicans become more unpopular, fewer people identify with the Republican Party and more with Democrats.

Obama has every reason to be confident, but I hope he doesn't become TOO confident and flubs the debates, or that Democrats decide they don't have bother voting because Obama's got it in the bag.

For their part, the Obama folks are counting on the public not caring about this issue as much as the Romney campaign or the media.

And they are no doubt right. Obama succeeded in turning the Egyptian president around on protecting the US embassy with a 20-minute phone call. U.N. meetings with foreign leaders wouldn't serve any real purpose except to make Obama look "presidential." But he'd rather meet with voters. So what?

The Republican Party does not love Romney - they never have. They tolerate him because right now that's all they got.

Sorry Jack, you are WAY OFF! CNN reported that Obama was the MOST LIBERAL Senator based on voting record in 2007. Perhaps his ideology is moderate or only left-leaning compared to you, but his ideology is clearly left of the vast majority of the country and is definitely not "moderate".

If CNN reported this, they are wrong. According to Politifact, the claim that Obama was the most liberal Senator as stated by National Journal in 2007 was rated mostly false.

Shaak322 – You can’t even quote your own source correctly. He was in the bottom 50% but not the least liberal by a long shot.

Wikipedia says “A study of the voting records of all 100 senators, using an average of the ratings of seven liberal interest groups, described Obama as "among the least liberal", of the Democrats, scoring an 80%”.

Secondly, when you really look at Wikipedia's source regarding their scoring system, it tells you a great deal. The NAACP did not score Obama, automatically dropping his score (based on the source's inaccurate averaging stats). Two other sources within the study dramatically reduced Obama's score because of his opposition to gay marriage of which now the President has reversed his position.

Thirdly, using 7 liberal ratings groups that judged his positions on issues (who were actively supporting Obama's campaign and had an interest in making him seem more moderate) while ignoring several non-partisan sources that rated his actual voting record does not strengthen your argument.

Polifact’s argument against the rating was because Obama missed over 30 votes in 2007 while campaigning so Polifact assumes some of those votes would have swayed Obama’s staunchly liberal voting record. They never deny the fact that Obama’s 2007 voting record was the most liberal.

Among least liberal ... each individual in that group can be said to be "least liberal".

As to charge that liberal groups skewed ratings on votes of liberals because Obama was running for President. How did they do that? A liberal group will decide what the liberal vote would be on any bill. Then they count the votes of each Congressman. Then they add it up. Obama rated among least liberal.

You nitt pick on one charge, then go whole hog speculation on another. Not exactly fair and balanced.

There is a huge difference between private unions and government unions in which collective bargaining is banned by the federal government and should be in hte local and state governments because you are negotiating with the people you put in office. Further, there arent any rights you need to protect in government jobs that you dont already have under statute.

Yet that would technically be discrimination. And either way, public-sector employees do deserve the right to bargain for rights with their employer, whoever it is. Remember that corporations already buy influence in government via organizations like the Chamber of Commerce, and studies have shown that when union membership is high, middle class prosperity does as well. That does not single-handedly prove that they have a causation, but unions do have a role to play in this nation, and limiting them only for private-sector workers will just eliminate unions altogether since most union members are working for the government.

Actually, the tax system in America is not as progressive as we think it is. Back in the 1950s, both income AND capital gains tax rates were at least double their current size. The only way someone can say that the tax code is more progressive is the fact that wealthy people pay more in taxes than everyone else, and that has happened because they have taken a larger share of the pie, shrinking the tax base for everyone else. I don't think a 90% rate is plausible; I personally think 76% is more realistic in the modern age, but that is only for income tax rates and for those who make over, say $10 million. I think capital gains ought to be about 35%, or at least 28%, where it was under Ronald Reagan.

While I cannot verify the numbers on how much wealth seniors control, what I can say is that the Ryan plan DOES impact current seniors. Assuming that Ryan will "reform" Medicare in 2023, and the $716 billion in Medicare savings will repealed along with the rest of Obamacare, Medicare will become bankrupt by 2016, forcing heavy benefit cuts for current seniors.

Personally, I don't think Romney has that much of a chance to win against Obama. I mean, he has no credible plan for the future; copying the Bush model and just putting it under a different brand name doesn't count as a plan. And even if it did, it would require specific details, something that is against the entire Romney campaign. While I do not necessarily agree with everything Obama does (shocker), such as his tax plan (I say repeal tax cuts for everyone) and his cuts to nondefense spending, I think he has a practical plan for rebuilding the economy and reducing the deficit. And I will definitely choose him over those supply-side idiots in the GOP....

Does Romney have a single plan that he can share with us about all of the criticisms he has about how Obama does anything these days............We know Romney will obliterate the EPA, FDA and SEC and award tax cuts to everyone, particularly those that need it most making over 200K/yr(?) and doing away with Soc. Security, Medicare as we know it and Medicaid support to the state: BUT just HOW is he going to make all of those jobs he promises? Just how many new wars will he start to keep his friends in Halliburton and the defense industries happy? Just what will he do to expand the military services..........will he have start up the DRAFT again, or not, or at least how many tours will the servicement be subjected to? WHAT are the answers to some of the questions about his plans??? WHAT would he do instead of just criticizing everyone????

JS1, you're just mad you have no intraweb friendship, that you want to control everything and everyone. If you don't have friends, no one should. that is your position right? Thats what my esteemed liberal colleagues tell me.

Interesting, these liberals that have a their DDI right, is just a group of friends getting together for good ol' times sake. I wonder if those boys in the south after the civil war, were just a group of friends as well getting together for ol' times sake . No one doubts the fact that Obama can win re-election, especially since we are dealing with the undefinable, liberals. But it\f Obama wins, the nation does lose. It will be the darkest eight years in presidential history. Obama is already the worst president ever, why not add insult to injury and let him completely destroy the nation. Liberals constantly demand conservatives hold their party accountable, and they should practice what they preach.

You really have to wonder about Mitt Romney running for President because he has offered nothing to voters, no specifics, no details, even his taxes were tailored to meet a comment he made in August. Romney is nothing more than a constant flip flopper, a "well-oiled weather vane". The man has no core and no ideas.

REALITY CHECK. It is one thing to believe in fiscal responsibility; it is another to be fooled into thinking the modern GOP is fiscally responsible because they say they are (Reagan & Bush 41 quadrupled the national debt; Bush 43 doubled it again).

It is one thing to believe in small government; it is another to be fooled into thinking that the smaller the government or no government, the better off we are.

It is one thing to believe in personal freedom and liberty; it is another to deny personal liberty and freedom to those who are different.

It is one thing to believe regulation is bad for business; it is another to fail to recognize that regulation is not bad for workers, for people or for the environment.

It is one thing to have faith; it is another to use that religious faith as a weapon against those who believe differently or not at all. It is one thing to have the freedom to worship as one chooses; it is another to insert that religious belief into government laws.

It is one thing to support free-market capitalism; it is another to worship it and fail to recognize that in order for capitalism to work best, it must be restrained to protect the public from the greed and corruption of the private.

It is one thing to doubt science at times; it is another to disregard it completely.

It is one thing to believe in low taxes; it is another to exempt the wealthy and the powerful from paying a fair share while burdening the middle class and the poor with regressive taxes in an attempt to make up the difference.

It is one thing to support military spending; it is another to do so at the expense of everything else needed to be a strong and powerful nation.

It is one thing to believe the wealthy are the job creators; it is another to recognize that it is the middle class that drives the economic engine and creates the need for more jobs.

It is one thing to speak of American Exceptionalism; it is another to be willing to pay the high cost for the statement to be true.

It is one thing to claim to be a patriot; it is another thing to actually be one. It is one thing to cheer freedom; it is another to expect the cost of freedom to be tax exempt.

It is one thing to be a multi-millionaire and claim to be a patriot who loves this country; it is another to make that claim while stashing millions in Switzerland, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands to avoid paying a fair share of taxes to the country the person claims to love. It is one thing to talk tough about China; it is another to invest in Chinese businesses which "pirate" product from US companies. It is one thing to talk tough about Iran; it is another to have held, until recently, investments in Chinese firms doing illegal business with Iran.

Obama/Biden 2012. They walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

It is nice to know he has moved on from trees at the right height, clouds in the right formation, to introductions with the right amount of hype.

What good does it do for Mitt Romney to "win a news cycle" about foreign policy by taking ANOTHER cheap shot at the President about Libya?

The question is not whether Mr. Romney would have chosen different words to describe the attacks, but whether Mr. Romney would pursue a different POLICY to address the attacks. Once again I ask, WHAT is Mitt Romney proposing to DO about foreign policy or anything else for that matter?

Mr. Romney stated that he did not approve of the democratically elected government of Egypt . . . so do we only support democracy when we get the outcome we wanted? Is that the real meaning of "democracy" to Republicans? How ridiculous is that?

Mr. Romney actually said OUT LOUD when asked for specifics about his tax plans that the "devil is in the details, but the angel is in the policy" . . . huh?

We cannot afford to elect another uninformed talking points generator as President.

I think that one caused everyone to stop, and go "huh?". If we have devils and angels, we can be sure God is in there somewhere, the question is where. My guess is devil=details, angels=policy, God=governance. Of course, there is always his comment that God will stay on 'our' money, so perhaps that is where he relegates God - to the money.

Nashville Fan, great post, great points.

Romney doesn't approve of the new Egyptian government yet Bush 43 demanded free elections in Palestine and Hezzbolah won power; why does Romney ignore that?

President Obama is right. While the murder of Ambassador Stevens and three others was horrible, Obama was referring to Libya's struggles to build a new democracy, a new government. I find it odd that neither Romney nor the media has spent any time discussing that the newly formed Libyan Government has, as a result of the attack, gone after the extremist, radical militias and taken control of them. Seems that is not a worthy topic for the media or Romney yet it clearly shows that the new Libyan Government is serious and they were just as appalled by the killing of Stevens as we were.

How many bumps in the road did our young country hit after we threw out the British? Plenty, and we still hit them all these years later. Democracy is a work in progress; it does not happen overnight.

Instead of denigrating the new Egyptian government, we must be willing to reach out and work with them. This is just one example of Romney being unqualified to be POTUS; this is what a Romney presidency would be like and such an attitude is the view of neocons--we have had enough of their style of foreign policy.

Mitt's foreign policy is to invest in Chinese oil companies who are doing business with Iran. Ooops, forgot to let everyone know about that in his anti-China commercials!!

Not to get picky but there are two main powers in the Palestinian territories. Hamas won control of the Gaza strip in free elections during the Bush administration, Fatah who were expected to win remained in control of the West Bank. The two groups while both Palestinian have many fractured relations and ideas. Fatah mainly formed from Arafat's old PLO group are (relatively speaking) more open to diplomacy. Hamas is a group that denies Israel's right to exist and has ties to other extremist and terrorist groups. Hamas is the main culprit in the attacks and terrorist plots etc. The Palestinian Authority and Prime Minister Abbas, whose main political group is made up of Fatah is supposed to reign in Hamas but really can't for fear of a civil war.

Hezzbollah although a frequent bane to Israeli Palestinian discussions through its acts of terrorism, kidnapping and open war is actually based in Lebannon with support from Syria.

To the point about Libya, there was more unrest this weekend between militia groups and other groups. Not sure if it was rival groups or merely Libyans fed up with the gun toting militias - Per NPR the people and not the government were rioting and tearing down militia centers, including the Militia group that claimed responsibility for killing the Americans. I guess this is what happen with a new weak central government and a bunch of wackos with guns.

Foreign policy is tough. I want someone well qualified to address, respond to and if possible try to solve these issues. That qualified person is not Mitt Romney.

Bill, just keep repeating what you've been saying and quoting Dick Morris (!). All of the other 466 polls that pollster is tracking that cumulatively put Pres Obama 4 pts ahead are wrong, including all the state polls that show an electoral landslide in the making. Yes, unfortunately for all of us, you are the only one who understands this vast left-wing conspiracy to skew ALL of the polls, even the ones produced by conservative pollsters.

The difficulty for President Obama and the public perception of his ability to put forth competent foreign policy initiatives is the hidden geo-politics that is rarely seen until a surprise announcement. Meeting with world leaders often times is the result of behind the scenes negotiations with many second tier foreign policy specialists and later the top political leaders. So the criticism of President Obama not meeting with any world leaders is more about public image perceptions which many Americans apparently base their judgments on. Yet the real important political matters are often those not observed in public. That is why the U.S. Supreme Court has been so consistent in its recognition and allows great deference to the President in executing foreign policy. Unfortunately the public oftentimes doesn't see it the same way. It probably goes back to the matter of personal trust and faith in the President and the long term policy accomplishments that aren't realized for years afterwards.

In addition, the outcome of this American election will determine our future foreign policy. This has been the case in every close American election.

World leaders are awaiting the outcome of this election before moving forward on most negotiations. In the past, a change in administrations in America has resulted in the new administration ignoring or countermanding done deals.

So, essentially, past American Presidents have had one on one meetings as a way of showing their strength in foreign policy even though it did not produce any concrete results. That Obama refuses to yield to the temptation to do this for show tells me that he is very serious about how to conduct foreign policy. This is the message he is sending world leaders. Either we get something done (which we all know is waiting til after election) or let's not waste the effort.

Our policy positions are clear on Syria, Iran, and other situations and they can go forward with Hillary Clinton in Obama's stead, but others such as Russia, Iran, Syria must give us something new to respond to.

TabL, well said and true. Shaak, good points, too.

I'll add that the GOP is having a hard time swallowing the notion that a Democratic President has trumped them on foreign policy by speaking softly and carrying a big stick. It is why Romney and the GOP nitpick President Obama's every word and action. Former President G.W. Bush had the support of the world after 9/11; and he squandered it on an unnecessary, "pre-emptive" invasion of Iraq. The US lost credibility world wide. President Obama has and will continue to pursue restoring our image abroad. I think about Mitt Romney insulting the entire nation of Great Britain while at the Olympics, insulting Palestinians while in Israel, and realize what is at stake in this election.

Our image didn't look very 'restored' on the news last week and it hasn't much improved this week. Add in the new troubles with Pakistan and Russia. And I believe that China launched their first aircraft carrier this week. Add in the Iran-Israel mess.

The world pretty much doesn't care what America thinks anymore.

The election shouldn't appear, nor be accepted by voters, as the equivalent of professional wrestling's "Smackdown". And shame on the campaigns for promoting this nonsense.

Anyone who watched the football game last night knows unions aren't the problem. Romney and Ryan's billionaire donors thinking they can put fake officials on the field make the NFL look like fake football.

It's time Romney and Ryan admit the union NFL officials are worth every penny and tell Republicans Governors (like Walker) that they are wrong for their hatred of unions.

Naturally, I don't expect Romney/Ryan to admit that Democrats are right in their support of unions, like the NFL officials. The billionaires who are trying to buy the election for Romney/Ryan would immediately cut off funding for them.

And all electoral college maps have President Obama leading by double digits.

You have to hand it to Obama the fearless leader he is. He takes the challenge of appearing on the View, knowing the hostility he will be facing, instead of meeting with some of the world leaders that are arriving in NYC for the UN conference. He knows things are going so good in the Mideast and with Israel that he could take a chance with sparing with the laddies on the View whom are so hostile to his views. Leadership at its finest.

                      Avg Joe,

Restraint is sometimes the best way forward. Unfortunately, it doesn't get a lot of good press.

To meet one on one with a bunch of world leaders at UN 5 weeks before the future of our foreign policy is decided (Presidential, Congressional elections) is at best done only for show.

Worst case scenario, it gives some world leaders an opportunity to try to affect the outcome of our election. It gives them a podium to insert themselves into the debate between Obama and Romney. It gives them leverage in trying to get a better deal.

Another problem with one on one meetings is that some leader will not get a one on one meeting with our President and will express sentiment that he or she was snubbed.

Any deal that would come out of one on one meetings (very unlikely, in my opinion) would become fodder for those political opportunists who seek to denigrate our President's foreign policy.

After reflection, I conclude Obama has once again chosen the wisest course of action. I am a big fan of Pres. Obama's foreign policy. It is working to bring the world closer together. The potential for great strides forward in achieving world peace has never been greater.

Pick up a book on foreign policy and show me where a series of one on one meetings at UN have accomplished anything beyond a bunch of public statements made by world leaders anxious to get some free press or further their own agendas.

Then factor in that Netanyahu is a personal friend and former mentor of Mitt Romney from their working at same Fleet Street firm in Boston in the 70's and that Netanyahu would like nothing better than an opportunity to again insert himself into our foreign policy debate and get his "poodle" Romney elected as a result. The only thing holding him back here is Israeli public opinion.

OK here is something I don't get on the tax thing. Our government blows money like drunken sailors. We are talking about having to borrow because there isn't enough tax revenue to keep up with their spending. Just exactly what are they going to do with MORE tax money.

                          Avg Joe,

It is very obvious – with more revenues we don’t need to borrow and we can start paying down our debt.

But it also must include less spending … a balanced approach just like our President proposed that Speaker Boehner, thanks to Leader Cantor, walked away from.

The average couple pays $119,000 in Medicare taxes and will use an average of $357,000 in benefits. Obviously simple math tells you we cannot continue down this path without reform.

No, I really think that it makes sense to lower the taxes on people like Mitt and make my taxes go up by thousands a year. I may not be able to feed my family, but we wouldn't want Mitt to not be able to buy that new yacht. I know that if my taxes are increased that all of the very rich will somehow make America better because they will save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Wait...

Dennis, Columbus, Ohio................that would be common sense that more tax revenue would mean less borrowing but we are talking about politicians that are out to buy votes, they don't care about running up deficits as long as it keeps them in office (power). They will blow every tax increase dollar and do nothing on the debt. We the people who are paying the taxes need to hold all of them accountable FIRST by cutting spending THEN the tax increases would go to paying down the debt.

In 1945 our debt was at 125% of GDP. Between then and 1981 the debt was reduced to 33% of GDP. Congress can do this and will do this if we tell them to do so with our voices and votes.

MSNBC ,clearly the most biased left wing propaganda machine there is, writes one little snipet on here that may say the President didnt enjoy a good week and the liberal fanatics start running their cut and paste articles and spouting the democrats talking points. You people need to think for yourself just one time. Likely not going to happen. The Presidential race is very tight no matter what either side says. I do believe Romney will win, the only problem I have with the whole mess is that it should not even be close............

He is doing his job and he has a campaign to conduct at the same time. I guess you would rather he just not campaign and hand Romney the keys to the White House?

                            From the article above:

If you compare former President Bush's 2004 schedule at the U.N. and Obama's it's a pretty big difference. It made sense politically for Bush to meet with world leaders, given that his election was largely about foreign policy, and we get Obama's strategy – first, do no harm, don't make any news before the debates, take the criticism from the "media elites."

The repeated Tea Party talking points on this website are as stinky as a three-week old tuna casserole left in the back of a college roommates' un-plugged refrigerator.

It's truly incredible that Karl Rove hasn't come up with any new tactics for his beloved Rove-bots in the last 3 to 4 years to counter the constant onslaught of Democrat bloggers de-bunking everything the Tea-Hangover's can come up with.

Karl's gotten lazy, and America has wised up.

The fact that they still repeat the same old – lame old Faux-Drudge-Beck-infested fish-wrapped goop proves that the majority of Americans are getting tired of daily marching orders from this tiny, insignificant, childish fraction of the GOP that acts no older than a puberty-challenged, snot-nosed, Romneyesque brat.

20 years of Karl Rove 'Tactics for Effective Conservative Blogging' are over.

Gone are the days where neo-con numbskulls could bravely go forth onto any blogging site and bully, beleaguer, and bastardize democrats until the Rove-blobs testosterone-impaired egos oozed onto their keyboards in a premature self-righteous fizzle. Today's Democrat bloggers are vigorously fighting back with a one-two punch of facts and truth, leaving the Rove-bots to lament in a perpetual cumulous cloud of their mascot's flatulent vapor.

Rovian tactics are now as obsolete as dial-Up internet.

The gig is up. The same-old-same-old is now just PLAIN-old LAME-old. There's a new sheriff in town called Democrat Bloggers, and we're calling out all the washed-up, momma's house, basement-living, Stouffers eating, no-girl-friend-in-my-future, Limbaugh-loving Rove-drones.

The end of the Rovian era will culminate on November 6th when President Obama is easily re-elected; the House of Representatives changes to patriotic Democrat Americans, and the Senate stays a majority of proud Democrat Americans.

You just can not make these things up!!! Romney has disqualified himself from being president....in his own words...LOL!

Romney has previously defended his low tax rate — which, at 14.1% is significantly less than many middle class families pay — by saying he is simply being pragmatic in meeting his legal requirements:

I don’t pay more than are legally due and frankly if I had paid more than are legally due I don’t think I’d be qualified to become president. I’d think people would want me to follow the law and pay only what the tax code requires.

If Romney had taken all of the deductions available to him under the tax code, he would have paid closer to a 9 percent tax rate in 2011. In attempting to match up his tax rate with his prior statement, Romney is paying more in taxes — and by his very own standard — disqualifying himself from the presidency. It’s worth noting that under Romney’s tax plan, he would cut his own rates even further, and would have paid little to no taxes under Paul Ryan’s 2010 budget, which would have eliminated the capital gains tax.

The mainstream media is doing our country and its citizens a great disservice in its left leaning slant of the news. This is a dangerous situation and goes against our democracy especially when they know they are being viewed by those who are easily swayed. The Dems know that and that is why our president spends so much time with celebrities on TV and in Hollywood. Obama may be appeal to the movie star set, but he can't fool educated people who know what is going on and what is really at stake for America.

come on! All of them do the shows they want. Conservatives avoid mainstream talk shows because their are too many questions to answer off of the cuff that deal with social issues which we all know is NOT a Republican Concern. Bush did talk shows, hell he even did Saturday Night Live during his re-election bid.

It's not the mainstream media that is hurting the Republican Candidate, it is the Candidates themselves. It's Romney saying all he did and it being videoed and run un-edited on TV, It is Ryan in 2010 complaining about Rich Americans "HIDING" Their money in the Caymans, exactly where Romney hides some of his. I can tell you as an Independent Voter, all of the commentary that is attached to all of these videos and all of the proof of voting records do not sway me, it is the proof itself. Like Ryan saying in Florida that Obama is cutting NASA spending and the Chinese will be looking down on us from the moon (where we went 43 years ago or so), all the while he knows Obama has increased the budget and RYAN Himself has voted NO in 06, 08, and 10 on NASA budget increases, in fact he has said the budget needs to be cut.

See, it's not MSNBC that leads me, I learn from the mouths of babes. I even from time to time like to flip to FOX news to see how they are spinning stuff themselves, as they do as well.

Do you mean Fox News - the highest rated cable news network?

Perhaps Conservative talk radio on Clear Channel stations - which dominate the airwaves?

plsthink90, spin it like FOX spins it othewise it is bias? Trouble with conservatives is they think that everyone thinks just as they do; therefore, any media expressing something with which they disagree is biased.

Fact, this myth of a "liberal, media bias" was started on FOX to convince its viewers that they do not hear the truth anywhere except on FOX--they did it for ratings, they did it to keep their viewers loyal. Oddly enough, several studies have shown that FOX viewers are the most misinformed and uninformed in the country--seems FOX viewers need a little nonexistent liberal media bias to form some perspective on reality.

I watch news shows that give me accuracy in their reporting. False facts do not help prepare a good argument or do a thoughtful analysis. True facts are frequently reported by most media outlets. I stopped watching Fox completely back during Hurricane Katrina when they chose to play up looting while ignoring Convention Center situation in order to make Bush look good. How'd that work out?.

True facts keep coming up over and over in a range of news outlets. False facts are rarely repeated in mainstream media. Discussions and analysis sometimes leave a lot to be desired, but as long as they are based on real information, I can reach my own conclusions without having my head filled with distorted "false" facts.

That a liberal bias is seen in the news media speaks more about the divergence of true facts versus false facts. The liberals I know value education, science, and facts for the most part. Many conservatives also value these things, but many other Republicans get their "facts" from unreliable news sources such as Fox, 700 Club, Limbaugh and other hate radio personalities.

That they believe the mainstream media has a liberal bias is just them saying mainstream media has a bias towards true facts.

And in 2011 to get his tax rate up to 14.1, he DID pay more than legally due since he did not take the full 4 million in deductions for charitable giving.
