Ryan: Americans are giving up hope under Obama

LIMA, OHIO – Kicking off the “Romney Plan For A Stronger Middle Class” bus tour across Ohio, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan proclaimed during a townhall that Americans have begun giving up hope under President Barack Obama’s presidency.

J.D. Pooley / AP

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan gives a thumbs-up to supporters, Sept. 24 at the Veterans Memorial Civic & Convention Center in Lima, Ohio.

“People are beginning to give up hope. People are beginning to think that the American dream’s not for them because of this stagnant economy,” Ryan told the nearly 1,500-person crowd along Ohio’s key I-75 corridor. “And when you take a look at what your government’s doing to you in every nook and cranny of America, it’s not good.”

The seven-term Wisconsin congressman – speaking next to a large “we can’t afford four more years” sign in West Central Ohio – tried to strike a personal chord at the Veterans Memorial Civic & Convention Center Monday afternoon, talking about defense cuts and protecting the local tank plant.

“We are being equivocal on our values, we are being slow to speak up for individual rights, for human rights, for democracy. We are seeing countries stifle freedom in Iran, in Russia, in all these other areas and we are saying we are going to gut our national security, our military. That projects weakness,” Ryan said, noting that turning on the TV makes you think of 1979 Tehran.

Mitt Romney will stump in Colorado on Monday and then travel to Ohio via bus tour all ahead of next week's first debate. The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd reports.

Ryan – joined by both Ohio Sen. Rob Portman and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus – continued: “This is why you don’t, for a budget gimmick, shut down your only M1 tank plant in America, this is why you don’t gut national security, this is why you have peace through strength because if we are strong, if we are clear with who we are and what our values are, our adversaries will respect us more and our allies will trust us more, and that’s why peace through strength is going to be the Romney-Ryan administration’s doctrine.”

All eyes are on the Buckeye State this week. Romney and Ryan are barnstorming the state with a three-day bus tour beginning today and President Obama will campaign in the state Wednesday.

Romney is currently trailing President Obama in Ohio, recent polls show. The University of Cincinnati poll released Sunday has Obama ahead 51%-46% and the NBC News/WSJ/Marist poll of Ohio had Obama up 50%-43%.

With just 43 days before the election, Ryan fielded questions from the crowd dealing with a range of topics including why Republicans who may have supported another candidate in the primaries should vote for the Romney-Ryan ticket come November.

“Do you want Barack Obama to be re-elected?” Ryan asked the man.

“Then don’t vote for Ron Paul,” the nominee said to applause.

No, Ryan, people are not giving up hope in this country. We are giving up on hoping that the GOP can pull their heads out and actually spout something without lying. We are hopeful in our county, our teachers, and our soldiers.

Ryan is absolutely right! Just look at the shrinking workforce, it's the size it was in 1980.

We are going in the wrong direction, economic and job growth is being outpaced by population growth.

Elliot - the workforce is shrinking only because your Republicans in Congress have blocked every job bill that Obama has brought to the table. So don't give us the crap that we are going in the wrong direction, because if we are, it's only because your Republicans have blocked any efforts of progress!

Exactly what has 0bama and the media told you they will do? I think you should do some old fashion studying of the candidates on their websites and see what they say they will do rather than what they and the media say the other will do.

Smlfry2, Those "jobs bills" are nothing but more spending bills. Just like his giant stimulus, they don't work, they create temporary jobs that the economy doesn't support, when the money dries up so do the jobs. That's why 0bama wants to throw more money at it.

If we allowed the economy to grow it would support the jobs by itself.

Romney wants to make the country more business friendly.

Wouldn't it be nice if we had employers fighting over employees for once?

There is plenty of opportunities for you to see when it all came tumbling down, if you cared to exercise your mind. It was not under Obamas watch. There have been grave mistakes by every President that has been in office since I have been alive. What stands out the most to me are Reagans mistakes. He is your original "trickle down" President, and he was the one that started the floodgates by granting amnesty to millions of illegals (and please don't blame that on ONE senator, or having his fingernails extracted from the "left")

Why, because he doesn't wipe your butt and put baby powder on it after? Seriously, why don't you look at the source which is the Republican led House which just recessed. They haven't done squat and they're are the real decision lawmakers. To make it work, they must work with the Executive branch to get bills passed that would maybe help. They've refused to work with this president. That's where the real problem is.

I do plenty of "old fashioned" studying, thank you, But why would I want to study their websites? I am not interested in propaganda. I would rather see what they have done, I would rather look at their character. Romney wants to bring us back to Bush2, he wants to balance the budget by giving rich people another tax cut, do I really have to go on? What planet do you live on? Do you really want a President that speaks with such contempt of most of us, not just the "47% who want handouts and support Obama" but the huge part of the "handout crowd" that will vote for him anyway, just because he is a "Republican". The Republican Party ceased to exist when the Dixie-crats took over when Johnson signed the human rights bill, in my opinion. Where is the true fiscal responsibility? Where is the true limit government? Limiting taxes on the rich is NOT limiting government. That party has been bought out, just like the other one.

elliot- as usual, you're lying. The President's jobs bill would tax companies higher that insist on outsourcing jobs, while giving tax breaks to companies bringing jobs back. It would provide jobs training for the many jobs that are out there that people are not qualified to fill.

If the President hasn't been able to work with Congress over the past 3 1/2 years, what makes us think he'll be able to for the next four? He thinks the Republicans will cave into his legislative ideas in his second term. They won't. It's not totally personal. They don't support his ideas.

We can't go through four more years of this.

Hey Elliot. I will tell you what would be wrong with Romney/ Ryan. Just look at what Scott Walker did to WI. Walker is owned by Koch Industry. Lock stock and barrel. He does just what he told to do. Romney and Ryan are owned my Koch and friends, Carl Rove and Norquest. Now that Romney is behind, he is doing like Scott Walker did, he lied trough his teeth to get in.

Romney was given a great education. But what did he take away from that. Instead of learning how to work hard and build things, the old fashion way. Mitt learned to steel and get away with it. I learned it from that guy that took over Eastern Air lines. That guy was Mitt's Mentor. Get a bunch of people to invest in your company, take that money, Buy up company's that have fully funded retirements, Load that company down with debt, then take all the money that was borrowed, Take the retirement fund, walk away from the company, let it go bankrupt. Walk away will Billions and let the tax payers pick up the peaces. Yes the Retirement he stole was picked up by the tax payers. That is what is wrong with Mitt Romney. He is a Crook, Plan and simple. He has always hated the American worker, and has shipped jobs overseas. He always talks about all the jobs he created, Ya in China and India, or any place that has slave labor. This guy supports Communist Country. for Gods sake he would rather see Communist country people working instead of Americans. He is a Union buster. He only cares about getting all he can get for himself. That 47% commit said so much about him. Someone that can afford to pay people to hid his loot so he don't have to pay taxes on it, Talking about Retired people getting the SS they worked for all there life and paid into. Mitt called that entitlement. Well these people are entitled to that money. Military people don't have to pay Federal taxes either, They are entitled as well. But the man in the middle who has never had to work a honest days work in his life, thinks he entitled to be President because he knows how to steel and get away with it. NO WAY NO HOW. AND HELL NO.

Ryan is absolutely right! Just look at the shrinking workforce, it's the size it was in 1980.

We are going in the wrong direction, economic and job growth is being outpaced by population growth.

You and Paul Ryan are absolutely wrong. First thing first. Paul Ryan is the co-conspirator with Bush 43 and other Republicans (2000 to 2006) in cutting taxes twice (the money we didn't have) for the wealthy, starting two un-wanted un-funded wars and paying for 2004 prescription benefits (again the money we didn't have). That added over 7 trillion dollars to the national debt and where was Paul Ryan and his austerity preaching then?

Now, regarding workforce, it's true that we lost 9 million jobs during this great 2008 recession and have gained only 4.2 million of that. But we created net 300K new manufacturing jobs in 4 years now and it's a first since Bill Clinton left office. We could do more, but productivity gains and squeezing more from existing workforce are preventing employers from hiring more.

We need better airports, better waterways, better ports to handle exports, better highways, roads, bridges, schools, green energy projects, etc. so that we can put people back to work, and at the same time keep the jobs at home. Only way to do it is tax the wealthy who got a plum discount in taxes during Bush era and continue to get and have numerous tax loopholes.

Summary, we are going now in the right direction with Obama at the helm, but we will go in the wrong direction if we make Romney as the Captain of the ship and elect the Republicans in Congress, that's for sure.

And now, fellow Ohioans and Newsviners, just in time for the "Mitt and Paul Fantasy Bus Tour," some facts:

From "Business First." Date: Monday, August 13, 2012, 2:17pm EDT - Last Modified: Monday, August 13, 2012, 4:24pm EDT.

"Just three states added more jobs than Ohio in the last year as the state saw its nonfarm employment base grow by less than 2 percent, an analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data has found.

"The number of nonfarm jobs in Ohio, the seventh-largest state, grew from about 5.08 million in June 2011 to about 5.18 million in June 2012, according to On Numbers, which crunches federal data for Columbus Business First parent American City Business Journals Inc.

"Only California, Texas and New York state added more jobs than Ohio in that span. Those states have larger employment bases than Ohio as well."

Citation: http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2012/08/13/ohio-ranked-no-4-in-job-growth-over.html

For my money, character counts in a president.

elliot-3020456, you ____. Look at the same graph (labor participation rate graph) you provided. It peaked at ~ Year 2000 (just when Bill Clinton left office) and we had so-called full employment (3.8%). Then Bush 43rd (a man with an IQ of a third grader) came in and it has been downhill since then. Read my post before this and you will understand the macro reasons for that.

Obama is trying to correct that. If he didn't take the actions he took (stimulus, auto bailout, financial bailout, AIG rescue, etc.), we would be in a much deeper hole with 20% unemployment and riots in the streets. Lastly, who are the Economic Advisers that Romney has employed? The very same people (Glenn Hubbard, Vin Weber, Kevin Hassert, and Gregory Mankiw) who worked for Bush 43rd and brought us this misery we are in now.

so are you saying that we don't have a shrinking workforce the size it was in 1980 and economic and job growth being outpaced by population growth?

Please tell me why Romney/Ryan is your choice

I have before. but Im not going to explain it again, just simply he will better represent me and mine better than the current. If this isn't acceptable to you, Im sorry. I imagine that is still lightyears ahead of the I voted for Obama the first time and now i feel obligated to do so again approach. Quit parroting Mick though, that guy (or gal so i've heard) can't explain why O. Its not so much for hating Obama, his policies suck. I shouldnt have to explain that, its evident by his lack of running on his record. Why is that? He wants a second term but I am pressed to explain why Romney? You demand actual thought why your side reverberates Obama like sheep.

Kim, All i want in a president is one who will make the US the most business friendly environment in the world. Right now we are one of the most unfriendly, Romney wants to get the government out of the way in many aspects and allow for economic growth. Right now we have a GDP growth rate around 1.4%, it needs to be at 4% or better if we want to get out of this mess.

Why? Did Elliot initial statement refer to participation rates?

The facts, despite the right wing idiots stupid comments here, it is congress not Obama that does the spending. Congress holds the check book. All Obama can do is suggest a budget, and approve a budget. It is not his fault. With the congress obstructing anything that might benefit this country there isn't much hope of warding off a debt crisis.

Bill Clinton signed NAFTA into law but it was a bipartisan effort of congress to get it passed, trade agreements do open markets and in NAFTA's case it half works. If you stand at the Canadian border and count trucks you would understand. Again it is the greedy corporations that moved our jobs to Mexico, not Bill Clinton, nor congress, and not Obama. I threw that in because some teapublicans would try and find a way to blame him for NAFTA like they blame him for the debt run up by the republican presidents that preceded him. Yes, Bill Clinton had it turned around, and had a path to pay down the debt until George W. Bush squandered the budget surplus that Clinton had built. For the slime that blame Obama for Bush's mess, its time to get real and realize that Romney will return us to the failed policy of George W. Bush and will not be in any way good for this country. Vote Obama if you want this country to get well.

so are you saying that we don't have a shrinking workforce the size it was in 1980 and economic and job growth being outpaced by population growth?

Yes. I am indeed saying the workforce is in fact larger than it was in 1980. I will also say now it is smaller than it was in 2007. I say this because I have looked that the data.

I have not said that economic growth has outpaced population growth. But if you want to specify a period I could easily be in a position to make a factually accurate statement on that matter. I can also say that historically, national population growth has been less than 1.5% and GDP growth has been greater than 1.5%. As far as, job growth I would need to look at actual numbers for a specific period. I don't know those facts and can't accurately make them up, despite being a heroic fiction reporter. I would need to obtain facts.

Perhaps you as a man of the mind have an intellectual shortcut.

FYI, Jesse-Az is trying to help you run from your clearly inaccurate
initial statement. That's how men of the mind work collectively together.

And a man of the mind might not see the special genius in moving to participation rates while simulataneously mentioning population growth and economic growth.

Oh, but it DOES matter, don't you think? Shouldn't we have ALL the facts when making a blanket statement such as yours, not just silly political talking points? All you have to do is read "caesars" posts for those...he gets a fax every morning, then posts from work all day...on his bosses' dime no less...

Anyhoo...

So, your homework for tonight is to do some research as to the reason(s) why food stamp enrollment is at an all time high...and for extra credit please research just who is affected by food stamps.

There will be a test tomorrow.

Paul Ryan’s top-down budget plan is a sham!

Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney both support trillions in budget-busting tax cuts for millionaires that will result in tax hikes on the middle class and deep cuts in education and other investments we need to grow. Ryan’s extreme budget plan, which Mitt Romney has embraced, would make deep spending cuts now to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy, which would weaken the recovery and cost the economy jobs.

According to Harvard economist Jeffrey Liebman, based on Mitt Romney’s own projections on the impact of deep spending cuts on the economy, Paul Ryan’s budget plan could cost the U.S. more than 1 million jobs.

Paul Ryan’s plan would raise taxes on the middle class and cut taxes for the wealthy

Ryan’s extreme budget plan would benefit the wealthy while raising taxes on middle-class families, slowing our economic recovery and hurting seniors and the middle class.

Deep tax giveaways for the wealthy:

Paul Ryan’s extreme budget includes a tax “reform” plan that would make the
Bush tax cuts for the wealthy permanent, and give millionaires an additional
tax cut worth over $250,000 a year. Paying for these tax cuts for the most
fortunate families would require higher taxes on the middle class, gutting
investments in our future, and ending Medicare as we know it.

Raise taxes on the middle class:

Just like Mitt Romney’s tax plan, middle-class families could pay thousands of
dollars more a year in taxes to help fund tax cuts for millionaires. Ryan would
cut or eliminate middle-class tax deductions like mortgage interest, charitable
      contributions, and health premiums.

Paul Ryan’s plan would gut middle-class investments

To pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest, Paul Ryan would gut investments critical to middle-class security. This includes cutting Pell Grant scholarships for nearly 10 million students, cutting clean energy investments by 19%, and slowing scientific and medical research by eliminating tens of thousands of grants.

Paul Ryan’s plan would end Medicare as we know it

Paul Ryan’s extreme budget would end Medicare as we know it, turning it into a voucher program which would increase seniors’ health costs by $6,350 a year. Ryan has also proposed a plan that would have privatized Social Security, subjecting seniors’ retirement security to the whims of the stock market.

      Paul Ryan is severely conservative

Like Mitt Romney, Ryan’s severely conservative positions are out of touch with most Americans’ values. He would take us backward on women’s health and equal rights.

Paul Ryan would take us backward on women’s health:

Ryan cosponsored a bill that could ban in-vitro fertilization, as well as many
common forms of birth control, including the pill. It could also ban all abortions, even in cases of rape or incest. He supported letting states prosecute women who have abortions and doctors who perform them.

Paul Ryan would take us backward on equal rights:

Ryan voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which helps women fight
for equal pay for equal work. He voted against repealing the discriminatory
policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and supports writing discrimination into the
Constitution by amending it to ban gay marriage.

Ryan say's people have given up hope under Obama but fails to explain how they'd regain it under R & R. They need to explain how following the policies of Bush of tax cuts for the rich and increased military spending will do better than Obama when under Bush we averaged 143,000 jobs created a year which is barely better than Obama's for each month. It didn't work before and they don't even try to explain why it'd work now.

        Witchking,

Don't forget that Ryan/Romney will also cut programs. The same programs that middle and lower income families count on to make their budgets stretch to the end of each month. This will cost them more and is, in effect, a stealth tax hike on the middle (not $250,000 Mitt, try 50-60k) and lower income earners.

Top 5 Worst Things About Paul Ryan's Record

        1. Paul Ryan authored budget proposals that would end Medicare as we know it. His budget proposal would repeal health care reform, sticking seniors with the bill and leaving their health care at risk. This is especially problematic for women, who make up fifty-six percent of Medicare beneficiaries.

        2. Paul Ryan’s budget plan would have cut SNAP grants by 18%. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) grants, also known as food stamps, has kept 3.9 million Americans (equivalent to the entire population of Oregon), including 1.7 million children, out of poverty, and allowed them to keep their families from going hungry. This plan also would have drastically cut jobs, leaving 174,000 people out of work.

        3. Paul Ryan is bad for women. He voted for a bill that would have effectively banned abortion coverage by insurers who received federal or taxpayer funding. This bill, which Ryan favored, would have allowed anyone involved to refuse to perform an abortion for any reason, even if the life of the woman needing the abortion was in danger.

        4. Paul Ryan is extremely anti-choice. Paul Ryan voted for the Protect Life Act, which grants hospitals far-reaching powers to deny women abortion care, without any exception for emergency situations. US law currently requires hospitals receiving federal funds to provide emergency care to anyone in need up to the point at which they can be stabilized or transferred, if the original hospital is incapable of providing the care they need. "The misnamed Protect Life Act is about allowing women to die if they need an emergency abortion," said Meghan Rhoad, women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. "It is a vicious attack on women’s rights and on the most basic right to life.’”

        5. Paul Ryan wants to defund Planned Parenthood. This ideological attack would only result in more women losing access to necessary and basic health care. One in five American women have used Planned Parenthood health services.

There you have it. While Mitt the TWIT Romney parades Paul Ryan around as his pick to be first in the line of succession to the presidency, you now have the facts. Paul Ryan has a long history of voting against affordable health care and women’s health. His legislative priorities leave millions of people at risk of losing their health care and in medical and financial danger. Combined with Mitt Romney’s bad policies, it’s clear: the Romney/Ryan ticket is bad for women and families.

Not to mention the Man is a PATHOLOGICAL LIAR IN NEED OF PROFESSIONAL HELP!

Here's what we're worried about, elliot:

        From the Washington Post:

Ryan says his plan will be "revenue neutral" to current policy. That means it will raise about the same amount of money as the current tax code. But it also "repeals the AMT, condenses the rate structure of the individual income tax to just two rates of 10 and 25 percent, and lowers the top corporate tax rate to 25 percent."

In the accompanying text, the Bipartisan Policy Center is clear on what that means. "In order to remain revenue-neutral, nearly every tax expenditure would have to be eliminated." I don't believe that Ryan is going to eliminate nearly every tax expenditure, nor that it would be a good idea if he did.

I'd perhaps feel differently if Ryan had a history of voting to pay for tax cuts, or voting to trim tax cuts that couldn't be paid for. But he doesn't. He voted for the Bush tax cuts without demanding offsets. He voted to extend the Bush tax cuts without demanding offsets. He voted to repeal the House's "PayGo" rule, which says both new spending and new tax cuts need to be paid for, and to replace it with the "CutGo" rule, in which spending cuts need to be paid for and tax cuts don't. And, while he's told the Congressional Budget Office to assume revenue neutrality, he pointedly did not include even a single offset for the tax plan in his budget.

If you assume Ryan's tax plan would not be paid for, then it only raises 15.5 percent of GDP in revenue, and Ryan's plan is the single most fiscally irresponsible plan on the graph.

The question then is how should we in the media report on Ryan's plan? Do we use the revenue numbers he tells us to assume, despite the fact that he offers no path for reaching those numbers, and despite the fact that he and his party have a long history of choosing tax cuts over deficit reduction? Or do we use the policy changes on the page, in which case Ryan's plan is wildly fiscally irresponsible?

I don't have a good answer. I'm not comfortable dismissing what Ryan says he'll do. But I'm not comfortable assuming that he's going to do something he's never done before, that the Republican Party is ideologically uninterested in doing, and that would be nearly impossible to get done. Which is why I'm uncomfortable with the graph, and with the tendency folks have to treat the Ryan budget's deficit reduction as settled fact.

At the very least, people should know that when they hear about the Ryan plan's deficit reduction, those numbers are assuming that Ryan, who has thus far refused to name even one tax break that he would get rid of, has either eliminated almost every expenditure in the tax code, including the capital gains tax break and the home mortgage interest deduction, or he's sacrificed his tax cuts.

A couple of terms to explain that are used in the article below. "Neo-liberal" or Neo-liberalism" as used in this article is what economists call "Free-market" economics. Neo-liberalism has been dominant among economists and policy makers (including BOTH the Republicans and Democrats) since the late 1970's.

From about 1933 till the late 1970's the dominant economic ideology was "Keynesian" economics, named after economist John Maynard Keynes

Neo-liberal policies are "Supply Side": cutting taxes on business and the rich, deregulation, privatization, no minimum wage, anti-unionism, lowering wages and benefits for working people, etc. to make businesses "more competitive" etc.

Keynesian policies are "Demand Side": raising wages for working people so they have the money to buy things and stimulate the economy which creates other jobs. Policies include: Pro-union, progressive taxation: high taxes on rich, government sets minimum wage, social programs like Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, large public sector (post office, forest service, community planning, etc).

Both Romney and Obama are economic Neo-liberals (sometimes Obama talks like a Keynesian but his actions have been overwhelmingly Neo-liberal as were Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter before him)

        SEPTEMBER 24, 2012

        Why It's a Distinction Without a Difference

Who Will Create More Jobs: Romney or Obama?

        by FRANKLIN C. SPINNEY

My prediction: The eventual answer will turn out to be a distinction without a difference. Here’s why.

Both political parties and their candidates for President now accept neoliberal [Free-market] ideology as being the incontrovertible truth. This belief is more theological than scientific, because neoliberalism has a thirty year track record of not producing the high-paying jobs for the middle class its promisers say it will produce. Quite the reverse would be a more accurate description.

According to neoliberal dogma, the only way to stimulate the growth of high-paying jobs for Americans is to unleash the private sector by getting government off the back of business. Therefore, given this truism, the government’s economic purpose is simply to make it easier for the private sector to invest in productive capacity at home — or to use a popular but vacuous buzzword: to invest in the ‘supply side’ of the economy.

To this end, the neoliberal policy soup always includes a mix of tax cuts to the investor class, investment incentives and (de)regulations to make life easier for big business, and austerity economics by federal and state governments. Examples include regressive tax cuts, deregulation of oppressive externalities (like environmental protections), union busting (to make wages more flexible on the downside), wage stagnation (no increases in the minimum wage), policy incentives encouraging financialization to increase flexibility of the investor class (rescinding Glass-Steagall), and cutting deficits via offsetting cuts in Federal, State, Local government spending, especially social safety-net programs, while protecting defense production, etc.

After over thirty years of trying and failing to create high-wage, middle-class jobs with various mixes of neoliberal snake oil, one might think neoliberal economics would be an issue in the current campaign for president, particularly in view of the fact that each candidate is claiming only he can create jobs. The mismatch between past predictions and performance is mind boggling. Even a superficial look at economic data collected by the Bureau of Labour statistics suggest that the real world behaves very differently from that imagined by the high priests of neoliberal theology…

For the sake of America's kids I hope that the coherent Americans outnumber the obama zombies at the polls.

Things could be worse, re-elect Obama and you'll find out. He has no stickin plan, just rhetoric, rhetoric, rhetoric.

Best post of the above, by Larry:

Ryan say's people have given up hope under Obama but fails to explain how they'd regain it under R & R. They need to explain how following the policies of Bush of tax cuts for the rich and increased military spending will do better than Obama when under Bush we averaged 143,000 jobs created a year which is barely better than Obama's for each month. It didn't work before and they don't even try to explain why it'd work now.

As to those who support Romney - I've yet to see any justification other than blind and usually unfounded hatred of Obama for not fixing Bush's mess fast enough. It's truly amazing. How can you have the failure of Hoover's anti-middle class, pro-rich policies, the failure of Reagan-Bush's anti-middle class, pro-rich policies, and the failure of Bush-Jr's anti-middle class, pro-rich policies, and there are still so many middle class people saying "Let's do it again, maybe something else will happen."

Meanwhile, you forget the prosperity of the 1990s, the surplus, the expectation that we would have zero debt by 2011!

I've never seen a clearer choice between success and failure, yet there are so many on the right opting for failure yet again.

Our economic problems didn't happen overnight. It's been happening over the past 15-20 years, but the economy was kept going by middle class Americans tapping into the equity on their homes until they were completely tapped out.

It shouldn't be all about Democrats or Republicans! It should be about doing the right thing for our country and the majority of its citizens. I consider myself an independent voter, but going back to the Reagan days and with the only exception having been Perot, I’ve always voted Republican. But all this single-minded, left versus right, ideological one dimensional bull has got to go! This is the problem with our country. It shouldn't be about Democrats or Republicans! It should be about Americans, especially our elected officials, doing the right thing for our country and its citizens.

Both parties have sold out the bulk of the American citizens, who they're supposed to represent, by allowing the "out-sourcing" floodgates to open wider and wider without taking any sensible measures to stem the tide. (Under Clinton jobs to China, Under Bush I & II influx of illegals or cheap easily abused labor into the US and jobs to Mexico/NAFTA) Our leaders are elected by the Citizens of the United States of America to represent the interests of those citizens and the country itself. They are NOT elected by the Global Market Place or foreign citizens!

We need whoever wins the next election to Start Protecting American Jobs and do whatever it takes to bring back the jobs they let go. They've got to give us somebody who will stand up for the American people.

We need to bring manufacturing back to the United States of America and both parties are ignoring tariffs as a way to level the playing field, raise money and bring jobs back home. Let's guess why. Oh that's right, tariff is a dirty word. Hum, maybe it’s that our so called leaders (political leaders) are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.

I guess we should keep letting Corp Boards, Wall Street, CEOs and Foreign Lobbyists promote sending US jobs to countries where they work for slave wages, no benefits, no OSHA safety standards or no real environment regulations. How's that been working for us?

The so called “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field. Companies may have made higher profits by "out sourcing", but they've been putting middle class Americans who are a good part of the world’s customer base out of work. I’m not a lefty or member of any union. I run a business that employs over 20 people and produces products that are purchased by customers that do manufacturing and packaging. I’m just an average Joe, but I've been saying this for more than 10 years now. If I can see it, so can our so called leaders (political leaders) who are beholden to the same people who are exporting our jobs.

We need to add tariffs that are proportionate to the inequities in wages and regulations in the country where the goods were produced and or where we’re importing them from. We could then use the money raised by these tariffs to help companies build state of the art manufacturing plants here in the USA, which would create more jobs here at home for US citizens, which would then in turn increase our income tax revenue.

The people with all of the excuses as to why we can’t or aren’t willing to manufacture products here in the US are the same people who have provided us with the thinking that’s gotten us into this mess in the first place.

Over the past 15-20 years, I've seen too many of our customer's close manufacturing plants here in the USA and move those plants to different countries, decimating entire areas here in OUR COUNTRY. And I'm not alone. Returning jobs to American Citizens will provide income tax revenue to OUR Government versus our government having to pay unemployment benefits to those who would be jobless instead.

Bringing manufacturing back to the US not only gives jobs to the US citizens who would be working in those manufacturing facilities, but to the people that would be working in the businesses that would spring up all around them. This should also include the safe harvesting, production and distribution of our own natural energy here in the USA, rather than paying for fuel from countries where they hate us. Let’s keep that money and those jobs here in the US.

These so-called “free trade agreements” have to go. It was obvious when they were passing these agreements as to what was going to happen and sure enough it did. Our leaders had to have known this as well when they were passing these bills. It’s just common sense. We also need to bring customer support services back to the United States of America and staff them with employees who are US Citizens.

The “Global Market Place” is not a level playing field! The whole idea of the tariffs is so we can pay our factory workers a decent wage and not be blown out by these other countries where they don’t play by the same rules.

We may have to pay a bit more for products made here in the USA by US citizens, but at least we'll still have jobs and a future for our children.

The bottom line is that “Our Government” has to protect American industry and the jobs that those industries provide. If they do that, the rest will take care of itself.

No, won't contest that at all. I, however, am asking why?

                  Let's start with this:

Mar 5, 2012 - When it comes to job creation, George W. Bush produced the worst results—less than a one percent increase over eight years—of any president since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) started keeping records in 1939. By our reading of the BLS data (non-farm, seasonally adjusted), total employment was 132,466,000 at the beginning of George W. Bush’s term and 133,561,000 at the end, an increase of 0.83 percent over eight years, or an average of 136,875 jobs per year.

So 8 years of Republican policy (ya know, those tax breaks that were supposed to stimulate the economy?) led to 137,000 jobs per year?

                  And how has Obama done?

Sep 11, 2012 - private employers added over 4.6 million jobs to their payrolls in the last 30 months, an average of 154,000 jobs a month. Private employers added 103,000 jobs to their payrolls in August, while losses in state and local government jobs held the total payroll employment gain to 96,000 jobs.

The only reason our job growth is being outpaced by our population growth is because America put idiot Republicans in charge for 8 years!

Want more proof? How did Clinton do in the 8 years previous to Bush?

Sep 6, 2012 Clinton by himself actually accounted for ... 21 million jobs over eight years.

A little quick math gives an average of 220,000 jobs per month over 8 years!

I think that history is pretty clear. If you are worried about job growth in America, you should be voting Democratic!

Why is it that people on the right always say Obama supporters are "drinking to kool aid" or "blinded by the liberal media"? They act like they are the ones who are awake and not blinded by something, like they know the facts, when in fact it's proven that those who get their "news" from Fox are some of the least informed people in the country. They Watch Fox, listen to Beck and Rush and act like they are not brain washed with the right wing propaganda. When they are confronted about watching fox they say they don't watch, or get their news from numerous sources, which in the end can be proven to be a lie.

A search can show you how Fox manipulates the news, and outright lies to spread their agenda, and you sheep are pulled in by it and believe every word they tell you. I've even had someone argument be "because Fox news said so". Well I better go, I need to plan for Santa Clause's arrival in Dec.

It seem each time a conservative attempts to describe a liberal, they end up describing themselves. Lyan Ryan did it again. The people have lost faith in REPUBLICANS. Fewer and fewer people are identifying themselves as Republicans not than at any time over the last 100 years. And it's easy to understand why. Republicans have no answers other than the failed policies of the past. They haven't had a new idea in 30 years. All they have done for the last 4 years is obstruct, obstruct, obstruct.

Wake up, Romney and Ryan are not allowed by law to be involved with that which is run by Citizens United. So far only the Obama campaign has run ads with a direct connection between a Super PAC and their campaign.

Independent - so what would you have the President do - allow people to starve? Do you even begin to realize we are getting out of the worst recession since the Depression? And, Congress has blocked every effort the President made to help move jobs creation forward. Of course more people are on food stamps - welfare. That happens during a serious economic situation.

The point is, had congress not be treasonous, we would be further along in jobs creation and fewer people would be needing help.

Independent. That is the most irresponsible statement the Reps have come up with yet. It was your hero Little Bush that caused this mess and the Rep congress and Senate also. This whole mess started with them. As always the Reps screw things up royally and the Dem's have to clean up the mess. Bush handed the keys to a Broken Government. The Reps have been shipping our jobs overseas sense the 70's, that is a fact. Sending those jobs to Communist country's Anywhere they had slave labor. And they gave Tax breaks to those company's that sold out to those countries. These People have taken and taken from this country. Then they see a way to make a fast buck and suddenly America isn't a good place to invest. The used the Unions as a reason to send those jobs overseas. But the bottom line is, the problem was with People like Romney, Romney to this day hates the american worker. Can you imagine Henry Ford saying that he wanted to send american jobs to Communist China, Vietnam, Russia maybe. No Henry Ford was an American first and foremost. He put country first and his workers. He wanted to pay them enough to be able to buy the cars they built. People like Romney only want to make a fast buck. Romney is not entitled to be President. Reps are not entitled to be in the majority. If the Dem's we in the majority the last 4 years, we wold be so much further along in this recovery then we are. And the Rep's are taking the blame for that. That is why Romney is loosing and will loose no matter how much money big business and Koch industry's pout into the election. They are wasting good money. But they will find a way to get the tax payers to pay that money back to them, They will want a bail out, to get there money back. I think they are starting to spend that money on congressional races because they see the writing on the wall, Romney and Ryan is going to loose, and loose big. This election can't be stolen. We simply wont stand for it again.

Chris made child's play of him, Hell he was going to walk away because Chris turned him inside out. Matthews wouldn't have served up those soft balls that Gregory did to the Rep's. Independent Thought -- "And what about O's first two years of unbridled 'leadership?'"

Although "unbridled" is in no way accurate, I do remember those years. Not only did President Obama help the nation to avert another Great Depression, he was also able to put in place the historic beginnings of health care reform.

JK1963 -- "So how about a job bills that doesn't cost BILLIONS?"

My first instinct is to scream back at you: "How about Republicans put forth a tax policy that doesn't cost TRILLIONS?" But I'll try to tone it down and answer your question: Not just yet. Investing in infrastructure does cost billions, but it also creates jobs and benefits the country in the long term. At this time, with interest rates so low, we should be investing in the nation's infrastructure. Let's get the economy growing again, then we can attack the debt. If we just give up hope like Ryan seems to be encouraging we're doomed.

Forget the tax breaks he would give the wealthy, his "voucher" plan for Medicate that would funnel billions to corporate interests at the expense of senior heath and his distain for people who depend on government for assistance, even as he has drawn a taxpayer funded paycheck for almost his entire life!

I've given up hope that either Romney or Ryan will ever speak a word of truth. Beyond that, talk about negativity coming from the Vulture/Voucher guys; the Doom & Gloom Duo. Sorry Paul Ryan, Hope is alive and well in this country and by the way, Americans never give up hope; it is one of those intangibles that make this country great. Our attitude is we will pick ourselves up and keep going.

Jody I say this. If Ryan think we american's have given up, he has a big surprise coming don't he. Hell We haven't begone to fight yet. I have seen where under President Obama's leadership, We have for the first time sense Bush 41 how a war should be fought. The president fights these 2 wars he was handed, smarter and more efferent. The Taliban didn't know what hit them. OBL didn't know what hit him. Under President Obama, I see a new way of doing business where the unions and GM work hand and hand to save jobs. The Unions gave back to work with GM. I see that being the model from here out. There really is no reason that the Unions and Management can't work hand and hand. Everyone wins like this. Under President Obama we have been bringing back many of the jobs the Reps sent to china and India. Romney just said last night that he wants smart people to come to america. God forbid we Educate our people to do those high paying jobs. I am in Michigan, they are trying to get us to build a new bridge to Canada. And guess who our Rep Governor wants to have build it? Foreigner and Foreign Steel. That's right use out tax dollars to support Foreign Country's. I would like to know where the steel is coming from to rebuild the Twin towers and who is going to be building it?

mcpaddywack - I'm doing MUCH better now. I was laid off twice 3-4 years ago when Obama was just beginning to dig us out of this mess. I now have an advanced degree, great job, secure investments, and have always paid all of my taxes on earned wages - unlike Robmey.

                    Hey JK

George Romney released 12 years worth of tax returns to the American people when he ran for president. Since then, presidential candidates -- Republicans and Democrats -- have followed his lead and released multiple tax records for public scrutiny.

                    All presidential candidates, except one.

Mitt Romney has only released two years of records after persistent pressure. It raises the question: What does Mitt Romney have to hide?

Romney has some explaining to do:

Romney admits he has huge amounts of money in offshore bank accounts -- but won't say how much money, how many accounts, or where they all are Vanity Fair reports that Romney set up shell companies in Bermuda and tax shields in the Cayman Islands and Swiss Bank accounts

And, Romney's campaign said it was "unseemly and disgusting" for people to scrutinize his tax returns and business holdings

Unseemly? Disgusting? It's the same thing every presidential candidate has done since 1968. Everyone except Mitt the TWIT Romney. So, we have to ask: What's he hiding?

THE FACT THAT HE HAS FOREIGN ACCOUNTS TO TAX DODGE AND STEAL FROM THE US TREASURY AND HE AMERICAN PEOPLE

I CALL THAT A TRAITOR AND THIEF!

Plenty, dear! He built us a really cool planetarium in Rahm Town, gave us all kinds of wonderful research on Mormon crickets and Hawaiian Monk Seals, built a great 'all teen zone' in Atlanta Georgia, funded a tattoo removal clinic in California, and sponsored 'weed removal' in Maryland! Those are only five or six of the 9300 earmarks he shoved into his stimulus bill. Sounds like money well spent, hmm?

Well...I can see that you are no tax professional. Since when does having money in accounts outside of the US make you a criminal? Please point that regulation out to us all. And while you are at it, please also cite where the IRS has brought charges against Romney for tax evasion? It must be nice to live in a fantasyland where someone that makes more money than you is automatically "guilty".

I will admit that you are good for a laugh at least...

not embarrassed and voting again for Obama. Could never vote for party with leader who denigrates half of all americans, who wants to destroy medicaid, take away health care for millions, focuses on the wealthy..those job creators who instead of creating jobs over the past 12 yrs just increase their own wealth. Nor could i vote for a party that thinks war first, not diplomacy, a party that does not believe in equal pay for women and a party that thinks men should tell women what kind of medical treatment they can and can not have. there are more reasons..those are just starters.

Obama could probably sit back and say nothing at this point. It's evident based on their own words that Robmey/Ryan will bury themselves - nothing productive to say - just pointing fingers. It's quite redundant, and mcpaddywack hasn't learned that yet.

The only ones that should be embarrassed are the ones that voted for Romney in the GOPTP primaries. Of course, as Santorum said, they aren't the smartest ones on the block, so they don't understand the word embarrassed - rather they double down on stupid. Notice the actual intellects of the GOPTP are distancing themselves from the party as fast as they can. George Will, Noonan, and dozens of others have already all but conceded the race because they know Romney just plain and simply and piss-poor candidate.

I disagree. 4 years ago, we were in a free fall. Today, we are on life support, but it is too early to take us off the ventilator. We still have a "fiscal cliff" we need to get through. How much do you want to bet that Congress does nothing or better yet, pushes it down the road AGAIN?

Do you mean Sen Scott Brown? (The Republican). I think you may have shot yourself in the foot. You could probably get a job with the Romney team, you'd fit right in.

I owe DB Akron an apology. It occurs to me a little too late that he was talking about SEn Sherrod Brown. Sorry. I'd take it back if I could.

I jumped to a conclusion and I was wrong.

Doesn't matter what this bozo Ryan says. Mitt Romney has already lost the election. The media is only saying it's close to keep people from turning them off. The guy is not presidential material and he's a flip flopping liar. They count on the low information voter to get them in, but that's not going to do it.

I last voted for Reagan and had a choice between dumb and dumber ever since. We have had dumber for almost 4 years so I would vote for Elmer Fudd over this failure - heck just having Biden one person away from holding the office should be enough to make you NOT vote for Obama.

"ignorant" "hatred" towards an adminstration that should be behind bars for writing checks they can not back then blaming the rich, wants to crack down on Banks and Wall Street while he continues to borrow money from China to give to failing green companies both here and overseas. He is to busy trying to meet with other world leaders here in our country while the middle east is boiling over. He is out buying votes giving things to woman, money to black colleges, and hispanics a free pass. My hope is not to give this administration 4 more years to turn us into the third world country Obama is from.

You gave Bush 4 more years and he was, indeed, the worst president in US history. Just think about it; the family of James Buchanan can now be proud of their ancestor how is now the sencond worst president in US history. Obama, so far is rated by historians as in the middle and may well climb.

Bush / Cheney arguably the worst presidency in American history

It was on their watch that 9/11 took place: it was Bush who failed to kill or
capture bin Laden: it was Bush / Cheney who failed to destroy Al Qaida and the
Taliban after 8 years of war: It was Bush / Cheney who lied to the entire world
about WMD in Iraq: It was Bush / Cheney who turned a record Federal surplus
into a record deficit: It was Bush / Cheney who created the conditions that
have lead to the biggest economic crises in since the great depression: it was
Bush / Cheney who failed to act when New Orleans was hit with a natural
disaster; It was Bush / Cheney who destroyed Americas standing in the world and could go on.

And where was Dick Head Cheney while all this was going on HIDING IN AN UNDISCLOSED LOCATION JUST LIKE the WIMP DID DURING THE ENTIRE VIETNAM WAR while Dubya was drunk high and AWOL from the air guard that his Daddy got him in too.

                              Witchking,

Let me remind you...it was during Clinton's watch that the World Trade center was bombed and yet Osama wasn't captured or killed. It was under Clinton's watch that the bombing in Oklahoma happened. It was under Clinton that the USS Cole was attacked. It was also Clinton that pulled his pecker out and had a fun time with an intern (although I don't think she had a very fun time) and then perjured himself...and lest you forget it was also Clinton that also hid in England during the Vietnam war and to quote..."I never inhaled..."

I just want to remind you of the good old times we had under Clinton just like you reminded us of the good old times under Bush...

No JK -- that is reality. It took Bush and his gang or Republicans in Congress more than a 4 years trash this economy. It won't get fixed in 4 years. And if Romney wins (he won't) it will take even longer because Romney wants to do exactly what Bush did. We didn't get out of the Hoover depression in 4 years and we won't get out of the Bush depression in 4 years either.

Speak for yourself, loser. The only ones giving up hope are those who can't get past the fact that this man was elected by wide majority in 2008 and stands a good chance of being re-elected by an even wider margin in 2012. Get over it. I still love this country no matter who is President, Senator, Congressman or any other elected official. As long as there are free elections, I will always feel that way. If you don't feel the same way, then you are not really a patriotic American.

                                      G, G and G

                                      From the article above:

"People are beginning to give up hope. People are beginning to think that the American dream's not for them because of this stagnant economy," Ryan told the nearly 1,500-person crowd along Ohio's key I-75 corridor. "And when you take a look at what your government's doing to you in every nook and cranny of America, it's not good."

Ah, the old tried and true GOP classic; Make the United States government the cause of all your problems.

                                      The article continues…

"We are being equivocal on our values, we are being slow to speak up for individual rights, for human rights, for democracy. We are seeing countries stifle freedom in Iran, in Russia, in all these other areas and we are saying we are going to gut our national security, our military. That projects weakness," Ryan said, noting that turning on the TV makes you think of 1979 Tehran.

The congressman's speech has all the old catch phrases that make the Tea Party congregation all warm and fuzzy; God, Guns and Guts.

As usual, it's the Wisconsin Congressman and the GOP that offers no hope to the American public, and offers nothing new.

                                      Same old same old.

The majority of Americans are hopeful, because we support President Obama and we are going to move America FORWARD into the 21st Century come November 6th. We're also going to take back the House.

They's nominated one of the most worthless candidates of all times. they have no ideas other than the failed policies of the past. At their convention, they talked about what their grandparents did, not what they did. They want to take the nation back to some imaginary time in the past. Sorry Republicans --- Sorry Republicans --- Mayberry RFD was a TV show --- it never actually existed. We're not going back ti it.

If our Congress had put half the energy into solving the nation's problems that they did into defeating, or obstructing our President, our country would be in allot better shape. Instead we have a group committed to obstructing the president at EVERY opportunity, even in cases where the Republicans wrote the bill....President Obama is FOR it, they are, as a matter of party puritry over country, against it.

And for the persons naming themselves "Independant thought", a rather ironic moniker you've chosen. There is nothing "Independant" or "thoughtfulness" about your hatred for our President in any of your posts.

Might as well get used to the idea. President Obama will be re-elected in November in spite of your doomsaying and hand wringing.

JT...You can blame congress for the past two years, but what about the two years prior when he and Nancy Pelosi had no discipline? Resulting in a massive spending spree. My kids call me obstructionist sometimes too. This said, I am thoughtful, I am worried, I have four children depending on us to not leave a trash pile as a future. Those numbers show right where we are headed, in the dump. Maybe you should consider thinking closer to moderation? I am an independent thinker, fiscally conservative and socially moderate.

I agree Independent... The vast majority of the independents still have not made up their mind on who to vote for... Four years ago, everyone bought the "hope and change" and the fuzzy warm feelings of Obama's speeches. Now fast forward to now, the independents see the true picture of the man that promised everything and delivered very little. The independent base will be the ultimate voting bloc that will decide this election. Obama had better start courting those folks if he intends to stay in office another four years...

Independent Thought - Nancy Pelosi had no discipline? How about they worked their butts off - more days in Congress than these free-loaders - more bills passed than ever before

First of all aren't we all independent thinkers - I have three children - five grandchildren and two great grandchildren

You think liberal thinkers are the scourge of this earth - may I remind you it was liberal thinkers that started this country - all educated men

And what we have now is a wish to former days - What Leave it to Beaver - Father Knows Best - it was a TV Program that really did not exist in America

My Mother owned a Beauty Shop - my husband's Mother ran a Deli in Jersey City - all the while these fantasy shows where on TV

Yes husbands worked - my dad at a Zinc Mill, my husband's dad as a Mechanical Engineer at an Insane Asylum

But we were middle America - where - I attained my degree as my sisters and my children - and my grandchildren - because we were able to better ourselves

But today since the 1980's there has been a war against us - cheap labor, schools not teaching science - or should I say the real science

Darn, my almost midnight rant - and I think this President has caught on to these disparities and I for one - a White Senior Citizen - over 70 - will never on the face of this earth will ever vote for a Republican

Fooled once shame on you - fooled twice shame on me!

Simply because Pelosi passes a bunch of bills does not make her a good representative...it's about quality, NOT quantity... Pelosi made a fool out of being a representative... And explain to me how you corner the market by saying that only liberal minds are educated minds?? That is the kind of arrogance that the vast number of us loath about liberals...

B.S, all you have to do is look at the job seeker numbrs. And the millions that have just given up hope of finding a job. Unemployment is not going down, the debt is nealy doubled. It is hard to find a bright spot during his term of office. Just look at the food stamp numbers. And he thinks that having a larger Republican Congress is going to help him do a better job. He should take his own advise, and try to effect change from outside Washington, since the only change he has effected so far, is for the worse.

Witchking, Chemical weapons (gas) is considered WMD's) which he used against the Kurds, several times. The Term Obama lied and people died could be used for "fast and furious" too.

Mitt Romney is one of the most worthless candidates in the history of this nation with no ideas to fix anything other than the failed policies of the past. Talking about In God We Trust on money, birth control, birth certificates, teleprompters, college transcripts and wars on religion while writing off 45% of the population and yelling socialist and Marxist over and over doesn’t attract many voters. And if you don’t come up with some new ideas and find an entirely new group of leaders, we just may have another President Clinton in 2017.

Ryan and Romney say a lot of things, very little of which is true. Just because they say something doesn't make it true, or feasible, or realistic, or plausible, or possible, or necessary. They will say anything, hoping some of the 47% of americans whom they vilify will give them a pass. They're dishonest, disingenuous, and not for anyone but themselves and their mega-donors. They label and consider everyone else "victims". Is this the best the GOP can do? Probably, considering the also rans (Gingrich, Cain, Perry, Santorum, Bachmann, Paul) and the current crop of congressmen and women now on vacation (again!). What a pathetic, out of touch group of politicians and wannabees.
