VIDEO: First Read Minute: Ohio, plus a debate preview

NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro discuss Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan's upcoming bus tour through Ohio and last night's '60 Minutes' interviews with Romney and President Obama that served as a preview of the upcoming presidential debates.

Discuss this post

Univision says that during his town-hall with them, not only did the Romney campaign packed the hall with non-students because they couldn’t find enough supporters on campus, but when the anchor gave an introduction to Mitt that he didn’t like, he [Romney] refused to go on until they re-taped it. A Republican present called it a “temper tantrum”.

Now why would that be?

Making last minute “demands” that would ensure his success, indeed
threatening to “reschedule” if he wasn’t allowed an exemption to the student
only rule and then packing the forum with rowdy, bused-in supporters who ignored
the rules not to applaud, the Romney campaign later gloated that the Hispanic
forum was more “excited” for Mitt than for Obama, whose also partisan crowd did
not ignore the rules.

A GOTP crowd and canididate that doesn't follow the rules? I'm shocked! What's not shocking is JAS1's lame attempt at derailing this thread.

Actually JAS - it's the new view of FR - nothing is collapsed. I haven't seen one in about two weeks and the ignore feature is beautiful. You can't see their posts, nor can you open them (without logging out), and you cannot post on an ignored poster's thread. I so hope you do have Feisty on ignore so that when she comes back, you won't be able to post on her threads. THAT would be pleasant!

To all the liberals on this board, Feisty wants you to know she's well and relaxing during her timeout!

Day 5 from the Newsvine poky;

Greetings to my fellow lefty liberals!

I wanted to check in and let you all know what an exciting weekend we had here in Newsvine prison!

After we finished landscaping Warden Tyler’s lawn on Saturday, and doing his laundry, he decided we did such an outstanding job he would reward us with “Movie Night”!

Wouldn’t you know, Sergeant Sally chose one of the greatest movies of all time; “The Shaw Shank Redemption”?

It should come as no surprise, I was put in charge of the *popcorn* while the red Kool-Aid ran freely! Some merry prankster who shall remain un-named “spiked”.

The best part was I got to sit next to my fellow convict & BFF, Beverly!

I found a lot of similarities between Warden Norton & Warden Tyler, but I will leave it at that, since I’m still on track to attend his art & craft class today due to my continued good behavior! ;o)

Which reminds me, anyone have a George Clooney poster & rock hammer they could spare?

Keep the light on for me...

{{{hugs}}}

no, simply suspended for her behavior. same with Bev. I like how you guys are trying your hardest alleviate any of her responsibility for her actions or at the least sugar coat it. How many times have I heard already about me 'enjoying' my timeout? I got what i deserved. lets see if Feisty learns. I have little faith.

Dennis - I watched both Univision programs with Romney and Obama. The revelations that Romney packed the halls with non students and bused in supporters is telling. During the Romney event I was surprised to see the adulation and chanting when Mitt was introduced. Similarily was not sure why people screamed in support for his non descript, talking points lacking specificity. If Romney pressured for a retape and almost cancelled I bet he warned Ramos and Salinas (Univision anchors) that certain questions were off limits. Case in point when Ramos tried to follow up on a question the audience (presumably the bused in sycophants) booed Ramos. The ever evasive Romney said, "I think I already answered that question." No follow up allowed on the question about the 47% are vicitims and don't take responsibility. No follow up about why Romney said he would keep portion of Obama care (per Meet the Press) and then a few days later flip flopped and said all of it would go. It seemed as if the Univision either willingly or unwillingly muzzled appropriate follow up questions.

In contrast, Obama got a warm welcome and received a smattering of applause to the real students that attended. In addition, it was noted that Ramos asked hard questions and followed up with the President. Obama answered. On a third follow up, Ramos even bypassed transalation and asked Obama why he broke his immigration promise. Obama responded by saying that the economic quasi depression had to be dealt with first. He also noted that he needed partners from the other side in immigration reform. Ramos pressed him that he failed to complete his promise despite Obama's support of the Dream act. To which Obama responded that he can't do everything from the White House that he needed allies and compromise in Congress. He also said that change can come from the outside. The electorate can convince their reps. to support immigration reform or replace them. He said he has learned that change can come from outside Washington.

When pressed the president explained that he can back and suggest bills but legislation has to come from the legislative branch. As none came he went forward with the executive order to limit deportations and allow the Dreamers whose bill was rejected by the GOP to get work permits. Later, when Salinas asked what was Obama's greatest failure was she aluded to his inablity to pass immigration reform. He noted that well from what Jorge is saying my greatest failure is not passing immigration reform. Right after he said that he expressed his disappointment that some things he wanted were not done. To remedy that he asked the crowd and audience to give him their vote to help him finish the job.

I thought Obama's interview was good even despite the hard questions and tactics from Univision. They are journalists and when doing Obama they acted as the media should. However, when Romney was there perhaps due to his earlier tantrum they were very meek and let the Gov. spout talking points without a challenge. Despite my belief that Obama did a good interview the right quickly saw their angle of attack. From a few brief clips, without understanding or caring about the context new GOP talking points emerged.

GOP false talking point 1 - I, Obama can not change things, change can come from the outside, therefore I have failed.

GOP false talking point 2 - I, Obama believe that the most important failure that I've had is not getting immigration reform. Therefore, I Obama think that immigration is the MOST important issue overshadowing everything even job creation.

that is the biggest load of crap yet. Why, as Feisty et al with the treehouse gang tried to get posters banned for merely just being the opposing view. They would flag posts as spam to get them collapsed. The same crew that had an in with a 'journalist' for FR articles and met with the guy. The same guy once exposed had to claim he would meet with conservative bloggers if they so chose. This further proves my point that FR and NBC lefty bloggers pick and choose what parts of the constitution to trash at their leisure.

Translation, FR is the Arizona Territory for certain posters. Nothing more

Don't worry about it, bcwc: people like poor Caesar, who do not have a life, have to drum up internet conspiracy to comfort themselves that they have a purpose in life.

The thing I have learned about this: People who claim to be "conservative" are control freaks. If they don't have friends, no one else can either. If they don't have a chat room, no one else can either. If they don't have a meet and greet and invite a speaker, no one else can either.

Basically, they are lazy and want others to be as lazy as they are.

I wonder what our President's view...

I'm sure Obama is meeting with his National security team and discussing this new threat and weighing our options and possible responses. Discussions are surely being held with Israel. Perhaps outreach with other allies, Jordan etc to tamp down Iran's threats. I believe that delicate foreign defense issues should be kept in private.

The GOP hasn't learned that politics ends at the water's edge. Romney no doubt, will blurt out some bellicose language about the Iranian regime. I'm sure the radical right would want Obama's discussions public record, this is something best left to our President and his defense and diplomatic team.

Romney is such a control freak.

He can't even campaign on his own. He has to have his children, his wife, Ryan, or several other Republicans do most of the speaking.

Many Republicans are again pointing out that he couldn't even stand on his own two feet to win the Republican nomination. Romney had to have his outside groups spend 10 times everyone else in order to barely win because Romney couldn't connect with voters.

In the most recent 60 Minutes interview, Scott Pelley asked Romney what he feels are the essential qualities of a leader.

Romney's reply:

"A leader has to have the capacity to build trust in the people he or she works with.

People have to look at that person and say, 'I may disagree with him, but I know where they stand and I can trust them.'"

Was Romney serious? Does he understand that--as a flip-flopping liar extraordinaire-- he has placed himself outside his own definition of a leader?

Dennis, I did confirm what you posted about the interview/debate on Univision to be correct. I am sure Univision would acknowledge that Obama had many more supporters on the campus than Romney, I mean it's a Hispanic forum. As for requiring a new introduction, it was based on Ramos saying Romney would only be appearing for 35 minutes while Obama was giving 60 minutes.

IMO, it's not a real big deal. We know that Romney is not going to win the Hispanic vote, no matter what he does.

  • 3 votes
#1.48 - Mon Sep 24, 2012 2:27 PM EDT

For those wishing to know what was said during the Univision town halls, Google it. Or go to the univision webpage.

While Romney was avoiding follow up questions and allowed to spout talking points. "I'm running for 100% of the electorate." Ramos paraphrasing - But your recording from Boca Raton seems to suggest (Loud boos, catcalls from the crowd.) Romney -"I already answered that question."

______________

President Obama fielded tough questions from Univision anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas at the University of Miami-Dade Thursday afternoon. The most difficult question came from Ramos, an advocate of immigration reform, who asked the president why he had not kept his promise to pass immigration reform.

During his 2008 campaign, Obama had specifically promised Ramos that he would pass comprehensive immigration reform during his first year in office.

"A promise is a promise, and with all due respect … you didn't keep that promise," Ramos said in English. (The majority of the one-hour interview was conducted in Spanish, with Obama listening to a simultaneous translation via an earpiece.)

Obama replied, "When we talked about immigration reform the first year, that was before the economic collapse." He added that since he failed to get a single Republican to support immigration reform, the bill was never passed. The immigration reform proposal was floated by congressional Democrats in April, 2010.

Salinas pointed out that Obama was the president who had deported the highest number of undocumented residents to date, with more than 5,000 children in foster care because their parents had been deported. She then asked whether Obama had undertaken his recent "deferred action" program to allow a path to citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants merely to gain votes from Latinos.

"Part of the reasons that deportations went up was Congress put a whole lot of money into it and when you have a lot of resources and a lot more agents involved, then there are going to be higher numbers," Obama responded. He continued to discuss general programs for children and promises of aid to college students for the next 9 minutes.

___________

In addtion to this, fast and furious was discussed with Obama and a question was asked about the DOJ clearing of Holder. They asked Obama if he would support the newly elected President in Mexico in border control, narcotic enforcement etc. As a funny bye line, the Mexican Pres. and his party was caught paying their PRI voters to vote, cheathing and allowing them to regain control of the presidency. Political corruption in Mexico is not surprising. Unfortunately here in the US the voter purges, false issue of false voter id voting may well help the GOP go third world and cheat themselves into the white house.

Univision reporters asked questions to Obama, either because they were muzzled or afraid Romney would cancel they let Romney speak in platitudes without specifics. No follow ups were allowed.

Why is Obama ahead with Latinos? Obviously we are not a monolithic source the other option, a President Romney would be bad for not only us but for the rest of Americans. Funny that even with some of us, not me, having English as a second language we understand that Mitt is lying.

Ironic that you want to portend to be an arbiter of rule following.

Perhaps you shouldn't stick your nose in matters that don't concern you? Unless, of course, you are admitting they concern you?

Happy to tell you myself Tzalaran: Newsvine allows chat rooms. Some of us who have posted for some years on FR became friends, had a chat room where we discussed all and sundry. There came a time when some of the group decided to meet, meeting was set up, a speaker was invited. Since the group met on FR, a journalist from FR was invited to speak. He accepted.

Along comes a poster named safecracker, who has since been banned, but comes back from time to time, his nose was out of joint, since in his world, no one can do anything if they don't have his permission. He decided that since the privacy controls were not set properly, it gave him permission to publish pages from that chat, to embarrass and intimidate those who had formed these friendships. A very limited number of right wing nut jobs who post here have a conspiracy brewing about the whole thing similar to the birthers.

Generally, when it comes up again, it is safecracker posting under a new moniker. He does love him some conspiracy.

So that's it in a nutshell.

As you can see, CA continues to spin about in the throes of conspiracy, proving yet again that the studies regarding I.Q. and conservatives are correct.

What exactly were they voting against with the Veterans Job Bill?

            PAYGO anyone? Wikipedia says this:

The Act was introduced in the House of Representatives on June 17, 2009, by Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) and has been cosponsored by 169 of the 257 HouseDemocrats.[1]

The Act had initially passed the House of Representatives 265-166 as a standalone bill in July 2009, then was attached in the Senate to legislation raising the debt limit to $14.3 trillion. A majority of 241 Democrats supported the bill while a majority of 153 Republicans opposed it.

In the Senate, the amendment attaching pay-as-you-go language to the debt limit increase passed on a party-line vote of 60-40, and the debt limit bill subsequently passed 60-39.

After the House passed the bill by a vote of 233-187 on February 4, 2010, the bill was sent to Obama's desk. He signed it into law on February 12, 2010.[2][3]

So the democrats wanted rules in place saying that legislation had to be paid for at the time it is passed, not with borrowed funds. They pushed through the bill and got it signed into law by the president. Except that now they don't want to follow those same rules. Interesting.

Let's fast forward to the piece of legislation that was JUST voted down...It was the

Veterans Job Corps Act of 2012!

The bill needed 60 votes to advance. The final tally was 58 to 40, and all 40 opponents of the proposal were Republicans.

As proposals go, this should have been a no-brainer. The Veterans Job Corps Act of 2012, sponsored by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), sought to lower unemployment among military veterans, giving grants to federal, state, and local agencies, which in turn would hire veterans -- giving priority to those who served on or after 9/11 -- to work as first-responders and in conservation jobs at national parks.

The bill was fully paid for, and entirely bipartisan -- Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) had his own set of ideas for the bill, and Murray incorporated all of them into her legislation. And yet, all but five Senate Republicans voted to kill it anyway, 48 days before a national election. Even Burr sided with his party to defeat the bill, and it was filled with his provisions.

A New York Times editorial added the other day, "It makes sense for the 99 percent of Americans to find new ways to pay their debt to the 1 percent who serve in uniform. To most people, Senator Murray's bill would seem like one decent way to do that.

But not if you're one of those Republicans in Washington who thinks it's more important in an election year to deny Democrats a success or accomplishment of any kind."

The GOP/TP DO NOT care about anyone or anything but defeating President Obama by any means necessary!

            @chilled:

got a link for that quote?

            Navy times () says:

Supporters needed 60 votes and got only 58 to overcome an objection by Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., that the $1 billion in costs, although paid for through budgetary gimmicks, would have pushed VA over the spending limits set by last year’s Budget Control Act.

So basically the republicans are trying to follow the rules and the democrats just want their way?

            Sounds a little childish.

Chef, the cloture vote was to bring the bill forward. The 40 votes of the Republicans kept the bill form coming to the floor. This was NOT a "paygo" issue as this vote was simply to bring it forward.

Further, if you read the Army Times, paygo was further not truly applicable as "budgetary gimmicks" (like THAT'S anything new and has never been used by any Senator on either side of the aisle) per Sen. Sessions (R-Alabama) were used to offset the cost. He insisted that budgets be cut elsewhere to pay for this.

When the Republican operatives ( also known as truth-twister) stated that they were appalled at President Obama stating that the political process in the Middle East had "bumps in the road" they indicated that with Romney, all the Islamic radicals would fear him so they would stop riots and calm down. Stretching the truth is getting old. If they simply said that Obama migh be understating the issue they might have a little more credibility.

I just spoke to a very good girlfriend of mine who thought that government revenues came from something other than taxes. Well, this good freind of mine went and did her homework and was she surprised at the breakdown of what Revenue is.

Nothing but taxes equals Revenues for the government. She was quite surprised and by the way she is a liberal from NY.

So what do you expect frm someone like SS? He has been brought up on NBC she probabley thinks that CNN leans to the right. I would ask her to look at all media left and rght and middle, but I'm sure her brain has been already developed to follow blindly what ever NBC says.

Not one word on how unethical the views of the GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" are when it comes to the Middle Class, the Working Poor, especially the elderly, and that is the same for the disabled. The GOP/Tea Begger believes that people are NOT individuals however, people are heartless corporations. Without a sense of individuality. Then there is no sense of humanity. The GOP/Tea Begger has equated Greed to being one with GOD! It is very clear from that video that "Romulian Romney has no sense of humanity, and has no ethical principles. His idea of an individual is a the person with the most money, and that has earned the right to be represented. That is fact!

I wonder what eloquent words Mitt would have used to express his views of the 47%? I think someone should give him a second chance to clarify. This 100% crap is certainly not accurate, and was stolen from the nuns on the bus at Democratic convention.

An excellent question for a moderator to ask at the debate. I hope they take your suggestion!

Amy, I want the moderator to ask why anyone would sign an oath to Grover Norquist when they have been elected to represent this country. I really want an answer!

Amy - that is a good question and I'm positive that it will be asked not once but in all presidential three debates.

Insanity and cat of many colors, Polls just give you a temperature of what it could be and as we all have said, "it anit over until November Elections.

However just to give you another view form polls other than your world of NBC, I'm posting Rasmussen for you, just to give you a little bit to think about..

Currently, 43% of voters nationwide are certain they will vote for Romney, and 41% are just as certain about voting for Obama. Three percent (3%) are likely to vote for Romney but could change their minds. Six percent (6%) say they expect to vote for Obama but could change their minds.

Maybe they can also ask him why he takes advantage of the Clinton capital gain tax cuts that haven't expired. While they are at they should ask the democrats that same question.

What the majority of Democrats and all of the Progressives fail to realize here is that when Obama proposes his " 1% v 99% mantra, he's not talking about what they think he is!

They believe that Obama is refering to the condition in this Country. They are well aware that they are not in that 1% and therefore assume that Obama wants to help them! The fact is that this is Obamas World View, and in that context, even Americas Welfare recipients ARE in that 1%!

Remember "Fundamentally Change" and "Level Playing Field"? Couple these with the facts that even as he, through EPA and DOE, implements moratoriums, restrictions and egreguious regulations on American Oil and Coal Companies, Sends Billions of Dollars to foreign countries such as Brazil, Venezuela and Mexico to develop these same Energy sources and even brags that America will become their best coustomers!
