Paul Ryan brings a tool from his past to VP role

Andrew Innerarity / Reuters

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan waves to supporters while holding a cup of coffee during a campaign stop at a Cuban restaurant and coffee shop in Miami on Saturday.

BELOIT, Wis. -- Paul Ryan has been campaigning as Mitt Romney’s running mate for six weeks but it wasn't until this week that the Republican vice presidential nominee finally pulled out a tool from his own Wisconsin playbook: a PowerPoint presentation.

“I'm kind of a PowerPoint guy so I hope you'll bear with me,” the Wisconsin congressman and budget guru joked to a crowd full of supporters Saturday afternoon in Orlando, Fla.

Speaking on the campus of the University of Central Florida, the wonky Ryan used four different slides to help demonstrate the problems with the nation’s debt and how spending has changed under President Barack Obama.

Michael Steel, a spokesman for the Romney campaign, said the use of the presentation – which was displayed on two large television monitors inside a gymnasium – was “simply another tool to highlight President Obama's failed leadership."

But it’s also a staple of Ryan's campaigning for his seven terms in the United States Congress.

Ryan’s congressional re-election campaign spokesman, Kevin Seifert, told NBC News a PowerPoint presentation is “a staple of Congressman Ryan's townhall meetings” – which, Ryan himself pointed out, he has held more than 500 with his constituents over the years. Seifert added: “It is a great way to explain problems like the debt and deficits and always has spurred great discussion with constituents in the first congressional district.”

Florida politicians help Ryan woo Hispanics

After debuting the PowerPoint slides in Florida, Ryan went on to hold a nearly 30-minute question and answer town hall session with the couple thousand-person crowd.

This “new” prop comes just following reports casting Ryan as “mini-Mitt” -- that is, the Romney campaign had forced the congressman to follow the lead of the nominee, rather than letting him be himself. Plus, early Friday morning, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker publicly chided the Romney campaign for not “effectively” utilizing the GOP vice presidential nominee. But, Ryan told reporters, he is happy with his role.

“I feel really good about it [his role]. Look, I am doing the things I want to do,” he said Friday inside Walker’s Produce, a fruit stand in Lakeland, Fla. “Look at what we are doing, we are talking to local people, going around the country talking to local press. I am excited about my role. I feel very comfortable with it.”

The quick event, though, marked Ryan’s first retail drop-by since Aug. 25, when he stopped by the Puritan Backroom restaurant in Manchester, N.H., despite holding more than 50 events in the last month and a half.

In the lead-up to his VP selection, Ryan would answer questions from the press practically whenever reporters would have questions. In the month and half since being tapped on Aug. 11 to fill this new position, the congressman has yet to do a formal press conference. Friday, standing inside the fruit stand, was the first time Ryan has answered questions from the press on the ground (he has held two quick gaggles on board his press plane flying between states).

When the House Budget Committee chairman first joined Romney’s ticket in August, he was forced to align his views with his running mate noting “no two people agree on every single issue” and Romney is the top of the ticket.

But as the weeks go on, it appears Ryan is settling into his role as Romney’s number one surrogate on the campaign trail. Perhaps this weekend is the start of Ryan being allowed to insert more of himself into the ticket with just 44 days left before Election Day.

As it is sometimes said on the campaign trail, it is always good to “let Paul be Paul.”

Paul Ryan is a tool. But then maybe elections in the future will be all powerpoint presentations and we can all fall asleep.

I think we are all in hysterics that the big 'game changing' strategy from the Romney campaign is Ryan backed up with a 4 page power-point slide show. That is sure to score a touchdown or two with the base.

Paul Ryan voted against the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, aka the 9/11 First Responders Healthcare Bill...not once, but twice...he would have voted against it a third time had he not been a no-show at the vote:

I knew a man Bojangles and he'd danced for you
In worn out shoes
Silver hair and ragged shirt and baggy pants
The old soft shoe
He jumped so high, jumped so high
Then he lightly touched down.

It was initially one of the most misunderstood songs every recorded. We all assumed it was about the real Mr. Bojangles, but nevertheless, the words touched us all deeply. We were teenagers at the time.

A little late, but I missed this little fundraising story from the summer:

Jerry Jeff Walker will headline President Barack Obama’s July 17 fund-raiser at Austin City Limits.

Jerry Jeff Walker, songwriter.

There was a time when if you were down and out, you tended to meet up with people who were worse off. And sometimes songs were written about this. Beautiful, unforgettable songs. I know from experience that people who were down and out tended to find dignity and grace in those who, for whatever reasons, just couldn't make it in the real world. So we all have songs we love, especially those songs that remind us of someone we knew somewhere along the way.
When we were kids, they frightened us. When we were teenagers, we called them "sir" and gave them whatever change we had in our pockets. We didn't know what else to do to ease their pain and suffering.

According to wikipedia, Jerry Jeff Walker said that while he was in jail for intoxication in New Orleans in 1965, he met an old homeless white man who made up a name to hide his true identity from the police. The two men and others in the cell chatted about all manner of things, but when the man with a fake name told a story about his dog, the mood in the room turned heavy. Someone else in the cell asked for something to lighten the mood, and the homeless man obliged with a tap dance.

Walker: I spent much of that long holiday weekend talking to the old man, hearing about the tough blows life had dealt him, telling him my own dreams." Walker moved on to Texas, where he sat down to write: "And here it came, just sort of tumbling out, one straight shot down the length of that yellow pad. On a night when the rest of the country was listening to The Beatles, I was writing a 6/8 waltz about an old man and hope. It was a love song. He's a little bit of several people I met for only moments of a passing life. He's all those I met once and will never see again and will never forget."

The song reach the top 10 in 1971. Even today when you hear the song, you can't help but thinking of the Mr. Bojangles, even though we know now it's not about him. Which makes the song all the more poignant.

It's about two men - one who was down and out - and the other, a songwriter who never forgot him and those like him. There was a time when we all were touched in some way by these people. I'd like to think that we still are.

Yet in Mitt's eyes, as he runs for the United States presidency again, they're just a vote. Nothing more. Nothing less.If they're not going to vote for him, they are dismissed in his and Ryan's eyes.

And from Mitt's comments, he assumes the entire 47% in this country live a life that this homeless man in the song lives. Yet he's wrong. It is the 47% who want to see these homeless men and women homeless no more. Republicans like Mitt and Ryan on the other than, feel they should be forgotten and uncared for.

Thank you Mr. Walker for writing one of the most heart wrenching songs ever recorded. And thank you for supporting our president.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's rendition, the one we're all familiar with:

Orphaned at an early age, Bojangles began his illustrious career as a street urchin, dancing for the white elites in Richmond, Virginia. Eventually reaching the pinnacle of success available to black entertainers at the time, Bojangles' human compassion and generosity made him one of the most revered and respected figures in the entertainment industry. At his death in 1949, his funeral was the largest ever seen by New York City, and one that transcended racial boundaries, just as he had done in his life.

The Romney campaign could turn a Visio presentation into a Fizzio presentation. When are these guys going to stop talking about Obama and desribe their plan. They do have a plan don't they? Do they realize that Obama is the devil, so vote for me is not a plan, even if you have a PP presentation it is still not a plan. Wow Ryan, you are so high tech! He doesn't stick to conservative's favorite tool, the white board, he needs four pages of powerpoint to show Americans that they really do need to give up what they need to survive, namely Medicare, affordable health care, and Social Security so we can give everything, our lives included, to the people who already have way too much! The wealthy neocons have been loving redistribution because all this nation's wealth has been coming their way for the last 30 years.

This powerpoint, Ryan believes, will make it possible to rob the 90% of what little they have, and is the best way conservatives can come up with to decrease the surplus population. Four pages of Powerpoint becomes so Dickensian in the hands of Mini Mitt!

Obama/Biden 2012, because your life and even your survival depends on it!

so, what's your plan to cut more taxes for the millionaires - such 12-year long Bush tax cut is not govt handout? All the loopholes in the tax code are not govt giveaways to the undeserving millionaires who actually don't need to money.

When these rich got the money, they move their new wealth (their new-govt-handout-to-the-rich) to the Bermuda and Cayman Islands and to their Swiss banks.

When Bush gave such vast wealth away, his excuse? trickle-down economics ... so the rich can reinvest the money into the economy and create jobs?

U R kidding, right? Bush has no brain, Mitt has his Bain, Middle Class suffers pain.

I agree Mat, in the case of Romney/Ryan, it is another trophy on the shelf rather than the desire to serve their country. Just watching them keep their policies secret rather than allowing them to see the light of day speaks volumes. Sunlight on their putrid ideas would remove all doubt in the case of these "thinking" independents. I don't understand how at this point, you couldn't make a choice for your future or against it, and Romney/Ryan are not in it for us.

Okay, all you GOP supporters. Not one of you has been willing to answer this so far.

Why are the House Republicans spending their time giving away American jobs instead of fixing the economy?

This is one of only 61 bills they've passed this year:

The United States House of Representatives passed a bill — House Resolution 3012 — which favors highly skilled workers by removing country-specific caps on immigrant engineers, computer scientists and other professionals.

House representatives voted 389 to 15 in favor of HR 3012 or the "Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act." The bill is also expected to pass in the Senate.

By eliminating the cap from each country on high-skilled working visa, talented immigrants from India, Philippines, China and other emerging economies can work in the US, the report said.

117,460 American jobs were given to foreigners on these H1B visas in 2010.

Can you tell me why, with our unemployment rate so high, Americans weren't hired instead? Or why the GOP wants to give MORE jobs away?

I went to this event at UCF to see Paul Ryan and it was just a pleasure to listen to somebody who actually explains HOW they will fix the economy and our problems in Washington D.C. What I am seeing in Paul Ryan is the REAL "Hope and Change".

Such a contrast to a current president and vice-president in Obama and Biden who cannot run on their record and their only hope is to try and discredit the opponent. Obama has failed on every economic measurement and for that reason Obama has proven that he not only did not have a plan when he took office but STILL does not have a plan.

Romney and Ryan have a clear plan and understand ONE simple concept - the ONLY way to grow an economy is in the private sector so clarification to businesses so they know what to expect in upcoming taxes, reduce unnecessary regulations, and decrease government spending is critical. AND WE HAVE TO CONTROL OUR DEBT!! Something Obama cannot even remember how much we owe!!

What is Obama's plan? The same as the last four years leading to increased unemployment, stagnant economy, increase in both food stamp and welfare recipients, and no budgets?

Ryan made a comment that was so appropriate and truthful (and I'll paraphrase) "the economy is NOT in this condition because Obama DIDN'T get what he wanted the first four years - the economy is in this condition because Obama DID get what he wanted the first four years!!".

Lyin’ Ryan

1. Lie: President Obama is the "greatest threat" to Medicare.

Truth: Obama didn't make any cuts to Medicare benefits; he made cuts to provider reimbursements, to improve cost efficiency and extend the fiscal security of Medicare by eight years. According to the Medicare actuary, "[Obama's] Affordable Care Act makes important changes to the Medicare program and substantially improves its financial outlook."

But Ryan actually does want to cut benefits. He proposed dismantling Medicare and replacing it with a voucher system, leaving millions of seniors to come up with more money to pay for care out of pocket.

2. Lie: President Obama didn't save a General Motors plant in Wisconsin.

Truth: First, Obama wasn't even in office when the GM plant closed. Second, Obama never made a promise to save it.

3. Lie: President Obama ignored recommendations of a bipartisan debt commission.

Truth: Paul Ryan actually sat on that commission. And he led Republicans in voting down the commission's own recommendation. So the commission never gave a report to Obama, because Ryan himself voted to kill the report before it could.

4. Lie: President Obama is responsible for the downgrading of the U.S. Credit Rating

Truth: House Republicans, including Paul Ryan, held the full faith and credit of the United States hostage to try to ransom it for trillions of dollars in cuts to social programs without increasing taxes on the wealthy
one dime. Standard & Poors said specifically, "We have changed our assumption on [revenue] because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues." That's why our nation's credit rating was downgraded.

5. Lie: Ryan wants to protect the "weak."

Truth: Ryan's biggest feat in his political career was proposing a budget with dramatic cuts to programs benefiting the poor. He'd cut Medicaid by one third, take away health care insurance from 30 million Americans, and cut Pell Grants for 1 million students. All so that he could give more tax
breaks to the rich.

Quiet: I like how you said "24 people" but, let me guess, you are a liberal and spew lies constantly? Were you there? Obviously not. It was at the UCF Venue and there were so many people unfortunately about 100 people were forced to stand because no more seats were available. Counting how many seats in each row and how many row, and taking into affect those forced to stand, there were about 750 people. This event was by email invitation (Thursday) and I jumped on it quick but some friends who replied to their invitation just a few hours later said all seats were filled.

I don't know why the RNC selected the UCF Venue (rather than the Arena) because there is no doubt in my mind he could have had 4,000 to 5,000 if there were enough seats.

So, as a liberal, I know your HOPE is that there is not an interest in Romney and Ryan - but you are wrong. Romney and Ryan at least have a PLAN and will at least offer a BUDGET when they are president and vice-president.

Witchking: Here is the TRUTH to your questions:

      1) President Obama is the "greatest threat" to Medicare.

Truth: You say Obama cut reimbursements to doctors. And just what IS a reimbursement? It IS a benefit. Medicare does not pay benefits to participants - Medicare pays benefits directly to the providers on BEHALF of participants. When you cut reimbursements you cut benefits. When you cut reimbursements doctors realize it is not "worth it" to accept Medicare patients. So a cut in reimbursements are direct cuts to participants. And government will improve cost efficiencies? Did you REALLY just say that?

FACT: Obama cut $700 Billion from Medicare benefits that will directly affect access to doctors by participants in Medicare.

      2) President Obama didn't save a General Motors plant in Wisconsin

Truth: Plant closed down during the Bush administration - that is true but:

FACT: Obama said the stimulus will save GM AND this plant. Obama lied (surprise surprise surprise)

      3) President Obama ignored recommendations of a bipartisan debt commission.

Truth: Obama had the results of the bipartisan debt commission and refused to act on it or support it. Ryan did not agree for several reasons but Ryan's opinion is irrelevant because the recommendations were never supported by Obama. IF Obama had tried to initiate and Ryan was involved in BLOCKING it THEN you would have a point but it is irrelevant if Obama never supported.

      FACT: Obama ignored the recommendations.

      4) President Obama is responsible for the downgrading of the U.S. Credit Rating

Truth: First, Standard and Poor did not specifically target Republicans and not sure where you supposedly found that quote. The S&P said "the United States needed to not only raise the debt ceiling but also develop a credible plan to tackle the nation's long-term debt". The key there is "tackle the long-term debt" which was not a serious problem until Obama added $6 TRILLION in debt in less than 4 years. This president is spending money on an unsustainable path and NO TAX INCREASES are even possible to pay it back. Borrowing $1.5 Trillion a year and then asking the "rich" to pay $50 Billion a year in more taxes is not a solution.

FACT: Obama's uncontrollable spending without a plan or a budget was directly responsible for the downgrade.

      5) Ryan wants to protect the "weak."

Truth: Ryan wants to make sure there is at least SOME program available to "help the weak" and in order to do that money must be spent wisely. Do you realize that ALL the tax revenue received a year just barely covers Medicare, Social Security, Income Security, and Interest on the Debt? In other word BEFORE Obama gets his first paycheck, BEFORE Congress gets their first paycheck, BEFORE the electric bill is paid for the White House, BEFORE the Secret Service gets their first paycheck, BEFORE our National Parks get their roads patched, and BEFORE foreign aid is given to Pakistan, Egypt, and Libya we ALREADY spent all the tax revenues received? We have S&P downgrading us because they know us paying money BACK is impossible and so changes must be made. Obama doesn't want to make changes but that is because he in unrealistic (and incompetent). Do we like cuts? No. But it is either reevaluate and cut a little now or the entire program breaks down and is cut completely. Ryan is smart enough to know we are on an unsustainable path and the United States can either cut a little now on OUR terms or wait until the world financial markets ultimately decide they won't lend us any more money and when that occurs it is DRASTIC cuts.

FACT: Ryan is the ONLY one trying to SAVE Medicare, Social Security, and any other programs intended to help those in need. Obama sticks his head in the sand and waits for Bernanke to just print more money. That will blow up in our face and very quickly (you have NO IDEA how close we are right now to a financial collapse).

So time to wake up. Money doesn't grow on trees and we can't continue to borrow $1.5 Trillion a year. We have MAYBE 2 to 3 more years before a total financial collapse and is a certainty if Obama is reelected.

You can lie on a Power Point presentation as easily as standing in front of a group and spewing lies. All you need to do is look at his "famous" budget to know that middle class Americans will be doomed if he and Romney are elected.

well james, your waiting is over,

for 1 thing, extrapolating the national debt out to 2081 just to keep his curve going and looking bad and then calling it current policy is a lie !!

2nd would be the fact that SSI and Medicare are not now driving the debt and probably never will. I notice that he also goes out to 2080 to make it look as bad as he can too.

in fact it looks to me like his entire presentation is a total "TOOL" and these wacko's have no ideas at all, just vague generalizations. you know, "we will fix it" without telling anyone how !!

As the article noted, first Ryan gave a "budget" with no numbers, then when everyone laughed at him he claimed it was just a "budget summary" and he spent the next few weeks trying to write an actual budget (which was even worse in the end).

My question is how could the GOP write a "budget summary" before they had written any details in an actual budget? Sounds like they were simply caught selling vaporware.

You are crowing about 180 jobs GM added for an engime plant in the US and 280 jobs for a stamping plant, while GM is opening an assembly plant in China.

Meanwhile Ford has opened 2 assembly plants in India and an assembly plant in the US (1200 jobs).

Now that is thriving, while GM is in slow motion.

Well dang, I thought he was bringing out a power tool, or a snap-on tool. Nah, just a power-point tool. Hey whiz kid, did you put 4 or 6 bullet points per page. Remember, when it comes to power-point, it isn't about content, it is about the visual impact, rather perfect for the GOPTP, Santorum, self-described intellectually challenged crowd. Hey Ryan, did ya know you can insert an Excel graph in a power-point slide. It can show thingies like up and down trends. For example, you could show us that bump you folks got after RNC convention - or is that too flat lined for you. Better yet, you could show the bump Obama received, rotate the graph 180 degrees, and explain that up means down, even when the bump was up. I mean, according to Romney, who needs facts.

Regardless, I'll bet the page was real pretty. Which background did you use - Apex, Aspect, or Civic. They are all real, real pretty. Don't forget to animate your bullet points, nothing like a "fly in" to take peoples breath away.

At least he knows HOW to use a power point -- O only knows how to use a teleprompter. All these rude comments about someone's physical appearance shows nothing more than your "bully on the school ground" mentality. You have no REAL issues to point out, nothing to defend O's lack of policies so you attack whatever you can to hide the real issues. Nice try but even a fifth grader can understand your play book, it's right under the grade level they've attended.

Tommy: 'Course it does. Why shouldn't it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?
[chuckles until he sees that Ted is not laughing]
Ted Nelson, Customer: [impatiently] What's your point?
Tommy: The point is... they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of sh!!. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.
Ted Nelson, Customer: [pause] Okay, I'll buy from you. "Lyin' ry;an wants to dump on Social Security and call it a "guarantee" for the future.

So a business flight from the US to the Far East develops engine problems and is forced to crashland in the Pacific ocean. Only three people survive to wash up on the shores of a tropical island: A French businessman, a Japanese Businessman and an American businessman. Unfortunately, the island was inhabited by cannibals.

Although they insist on killing and eating them, the cannibals always give their victims a last wish. The French businessman only wants a last cigarette. Well, items from shipwrecks wash up on the shore of this island all the time and it just so happens that they have fine french cigarettes so the French businessman can have his last wish.

The Japanese businessman is more complicated.

"I have been working on a PowerPoint presentation for months. When our plane went down I was flying to our home office in Japan to deliver this presentation to top management. After spending so much time on it, I would really like to deliver this presentation before I die."

Well, the cannibals scratched their heads and looked at their resources and finally came up with a solution. Since items from shipwrecks wash up on the shore of this island all the time it turns out they have a portable generator and gasoline so they can power the laptop that the Japanese businessman saved from the crash and he can give his PowerPoint presentation before he dies.

Then they went to the American businessman.

"Kill me first," he says. "I won't sit through one more PowerPoint presentation!"

The Ryan budget proposal adds another $6 trillion by 2022.

The Ryan budget proposal doesn't balance the budget till 2040 so how many more trillions will be added between 2022 and 2040?

The Ryan budget proposal counts on having an unemployment rate of 3% for revenues to balance the budget by 2040, a percentage we haven't seen in 50 years.

The Ryan budget proposal allows people under 55 to pick between traditional Medicare and the voucher Medicare however he won't say how he will pay for those that select the traditional plan or how long you have to make a choice or if you can change your mind.

Spending has increased just as it did under EVERY President when our country went into a recession. President Reagan increased spending especially defense while giving huge tax cuts as receipts declined because of high unemployment. This caused the Nation Dent to increase as much (percentage wise) as it did under President Obama.

PP presentations are often the most efficient way to get complex quantitative knowledge across. Which is why many of the posters here ridicule them. Here is some moderately complex financial knowledge (without visual aids) that liberals would prefer to ignore.

Last week the Obama administration started its third round of printing fiat money (currency that a government has declared to be legal tender, despite the fact that it has no intrinsic value and is not backed by reserves). $600 billion is the current estimate. That's almost $2,000 apiece for every man, woman, and child in the country!

In the past, when governments have printed fiat money to cover their own expenses, there has been a short-term economic bump, but then inflation is always the ultimate result. To us, personally, that means that, if Obama is reelected, the buying power of our savings and income will be severely reduced within about 18 months. Think about what you will need to do in order to survive inflation - it will happen.

Romney, by contrast, is a proponent of fiscal conservatism. That is, he recognizes the ill effects of deficit spending.

          1) Nixon took the US off the gold standard.

          2) Romney left MA. with more than 1.5 billion in bonds then when he started. Paying off today's bills with borrowed money ISN"T fiscal conservatism.

          3) Ryan's proposed 2013 budget is 1 trillion in the red with war funding (which he conveniently left out)

Kannin - unfortunately your post is full of holes.

President Obama has done what any President would have done to keep us from falling over the cliff and has brought us back from the brink of a depression - even as the Republicans in Congress have worked against his efforts.

You fail to mention that in the past - during hard economic times - Presidents have done exactly what President Obama has done - spend to help the economy grow. However, they also raised taxes - which the GOP refuses to let happen.

Also, you tell us what Romney will do. Sadly, Romney hasn't told us with any specifics what he will do - he keeps saying we have to wait for him to be elected. Only an idiot would hire this man. Guess that pretty much sums you up!

I've read that Gov. Romney's "economic plan" several times and been struck by a few things.

              1) The vast bulk of the document is criticism of President Obama, not an economic plan; 2) it fails to differentiate between "highest corporate tax" and effective corpoate tax which is what is really paid; 3) it promotes more off-shoring of jobs; 4) it disses "green energy" and economic development, effectively making us dependent on foreign oil (which is a significant national security issue also); 5) the Free Trade agreements specified in the plan have already been passed (Columbia, South Korea, Panama); 6) his review of the impacts of the Stimulus versus predicted growth w/o it is seriously flawed (feel free to review CBO reports); 7) he wants to free the financial sector from regulation - like that worked well just a few years ago - but has no clear plan about what to put in place to control abuses, he only uses generalities ; 8) he blames the Standard and Poor downgrade on the President when it was actually Congress - per S&P's statement; 9) his goal of gutting the regulatory powers of the EPA directly threaten the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts - do you enjoy mercury in your drinking water, etc.?; 10) his KeyStone pipeline jobs numbers are false - source: Keystone Pipeline; 11) his "total jobs threatened" number is bogus - it's based on speculation; 12) he denies the possibiilty of windmills and solar power "contributin to America" - funny that Germany is 50% solar . . . ; 13) instead of focusing education here for Americans, he wishes to import more foreign workers - short term this may work for businesses, but long term it increases dependency on foreign sources and costs Americans jobs.

I could go on, but here are a least a couple of thoughts to look at.

You don't even know how the federal government operates. The federal reserve is not the Obama Administration or any other presidential administration. The federal reserve is who sets money policy in this country and yes prints money. It does not need the approval of congress or the president it is INDEPENDENT. Printed money is not government debt. Get educated on how things operate. Oh and by the way Kannin the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke is a republican....

All US money is "fiat money" regardless of how much is printed or how much comes out of circulation. The "intrinsic value" of the dollar is (by legal definition as backed by the Constitution) the "full faith and credit of the US." The dollar was decoupled from the gold reserves decades ago (1971 by that notorious liberal President Nixon to be exact) and has not been backed "by reserves" since that time. The "true value" of the dollar is what it can buy and how it compares with other international currency with respect to exchange rates.

James- Obama inherited this mess, will you conservatives ever admit this?

Romney has admitted this, but then went on to say Obama made it worse, when this lie was debunked, he backed off, now he is back repeating the debunked lie. And with Ryan he is doubling down.

Why are there so many lies floating out there? Romney's campaign headquarters Fox news, where you can hear 24/7 propaganda opinions under the false label news!

Wow hummbird-3359530! Still blaming Bush for Obama's failures. That horse has been dead so long that continuing to beat on it just makes it stink worse.

Kannin, you know Bush 'effed things up royally, so why do you continue to deny that, or worse, out and out lie about it?

It wasn't that long ago you were bleating about how President Obama had four years to fix things, and in YOUR opinion, he hasn't...

You need to make up your mind, Kannin...you can't have it both ways...unless you just enjoy stirring the pot like the rest of the @!$%#s that come here from Fox Nation and The Blaze?

Kannin.... the grownup thing to do would be to admit the GOP/Bush left a huge mess and say or should have said, yes we did, and here's how we can help you fix it.

Instead, 15 stalwarts met on the night of the inauguration and hatched a plot as to how best they would hinder the new President and in doing so hurt the American economy and its people.

They would rather throw up walls and roadblocks of No No No than help our country get stronger That's a terrible legacy for the right.

So yes we will continue to blame Bush, we wont forget and we are not about to let it happen again.

During most of the Bush years, unemployment was in steady decline, averaging 5%. When the Democrats took over Congress in 2006, the decline was first halted and then reversed. After Obama's failed "stimulus", unemployment rose even more, and stayed above 8% for the last 43 months (BTW, that is longer than under any other administration since the Bureau of Labor Statistics started measuring the monthly jobless rate).

There is no reason to believe that Obama is capable of making that any better. To us personally, that means that,if Obama is reelected and we are looking for a job or worried about losing our job, our prospects are very dim.

Romney has grown companies that were on the brink of failure to create hundreds of thousands of new US jobs. As head of the Executive Branch he will be able to guide the economy toward that same kind of recovery.

So are you trying to blame President Obama for what bush did because he didn't do it or that you don't think that the 3 1/2 years later is so far in the past we can't talk about it anymore.

All the lies in the world can make it true that President Obama broke this country before he was elected. It was the bush republicans like Ryan that started the wars with no way to pay for them and then decided to give more tax cuts to the richest and claim that deficits didn't matter.

So now Kannin you are claiming that deficit did matter but you forget it was Ryan not President Obama who voted to create them.

The real stink here is that republicans can't or won't take responsibility for what they have done to our country, want you to blame President Obama so the republicans can continue on the destruction of the American economy. You know like how the republicans just voted against jobs for our returning veterans.

What kind of foul minded stinking pond scum would vote against jobs for our veterans? Why congress republicans of course and you can thank Kannin for voting them into office.

Kannin - During most of the Bush years, unemployment was in steady decline, averaging 5%.

And during the first 9 months of the Bush years no tall buildings collapsed.

Also, if you take the 3,000 killed on 9/11 and the 4,500 soldiers Bush needlessly sent to their death in Iraq and add those to the total number of Americans who died during the Bush years, the average death rate wasn't significantly higher than normal. Of course you need to exclude the hundreds of thousands of civilians we butchered in Iraq, but since they're little brown people they don't really count and we can exclude that number from Ryan's PowerPoint presentation.

Are you suggesting that because all those nasty Republicans were mean to him, little Barry deserves a “do-over?” This is our country we're talking about, not grade school. When Obama blames Republicans for his first-term failures, he is admitting that he would be equally incompetent in a second term: He is not getting any better at creating consensus, Republicans are not going to magically disappear, and his socialist plans for our economy are still going to be unacceptable to conservatives.

                #24.8 - Sun Sep 23, 2012 4:40 PM EDT

Kannin - the incompetence here appears to be yours. It doesn't matter who the President is when Congress decides to obstruct EVERYTHING they propose in order to make them a one-term President. It is Congress that has failed - not this President. Perhaps if they hadn't signed oaths to Grover Norquist (what kind of American signs an oath to a man who gets his money from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Israel?) they would have actually worked to help the country - not to destroy it.

The fact that you don't hold anyone in Congress responsible for their treasonous acts says it all about you! We don't reward treason by voting for the same Republicans again.

Oh, and the "socialist" stupidity is just that - stupidity. Turn off Fox for a while and actually work your brain. You just look like a total fool!

"The rigidity of those pledges is something I don’t like," Bush said. "The circumstances change and you can’t be wedded to some formula by Grover Norquist. It’s -- who the hell is Grover Norquist, anyway?"

George H.W is the voice of reason here?

SS - Even if you were correct (and you're not) that Obama's inability to keep his promises was due to lack of Republican support; so what! It doesn't matter who is to blame. Obama couldn't make progress in his first term; why would anyone imagine he could do any better during a second term. A Romney administration will not have to deal with Obama's fictional problem and will, therefore, be far more effective.

An adequate President is able to create consensus out of political strife. For whatever reason (probably his reflexive finger-pointing), Obama has been a total failure at bringing people together.

                Sure it does.

Obama couldn't make progress in his first term; why would anyone imagine he could do any better during a second term.

So we should hire the people who purposefully obstructed progress during a major recession, just to score political points?

Makes perfect sense, if you're an angry white teabagger.

That's just naive skrekk - You are going to sit there forever at the side of the road in a wrecked car, because you believe the people offering you a new car were responsible for your wreck.

Thats a terrible analogy. Lets say you buy a new ford, then the chevy dealer across the street says, lets make sure that car breaks down. So they follow it around, putting sugar in the engine, putting a banana in the exhaust pipe, keying the side, and popping the tires. Then, they see you broke down on the side of the road, and say, why don't you try a chevy. And they do all this in front of america's face and expect us to be dumb enough to believe them.

Republicans state their top political priority is to deny Obama a second term.Obama is launching the American Jobs Act slated to create about 2,000,000 jobs in an election year.

All debate in both the House and Senate is blocked on the American Jobs Act. Republicans even filibuster debate so that they are not on record for being for or against what is in the measure.

Today, Eric Cantor is running around the news channels talking about Obama's failed leadership on jobs when Cantor single handedly blocked debate on the American Jobs Act. Cantor offered no alternative. He couldn't. Most of the American Jobs Act was tax cuts, which is what his best idea would be.
Mitt Romney is attacking Obama on jobs round the clock. Attacking Obama for things Romney praised at the time and helped to create in the first place.

Why would I buy the same old car from the same people who drove it off a cliff?

Given the current electoral margins, it looks like Americans aren't as gullible as you think they are.

Bush / Cheney arguably the worst presidency in American history

It was on their watch that 9/11 took place: it was Bush who failed to kill or capture bin Laden: it was Bush / Cheney who failed to destroy Al Qaida and the Taliban after 8 years of war: It was Bush / Cheney who lied to the entire world about WMD in Iraq: It was Bush / Cheney who turned a record Federal surplus into a record deficit: It was Bush / Cheney who created the conditions that have lead to the biggest economic crises in since the great depression: it was Bush / Cheney who failed to act when New Orleans was hit with a natural disaster; It was Bush / Cheney who destroyed Americas standing in the world and I could go on.

And where was Dick Head Cheney while all this was going on HIDING IN AN UNDISCLOSED LOCATION JUST LIKE the WIMP DID DURING THE ENTIRE VIETNAM WAR. And where was W during the Nam his daddy got him into the air national guard where he was AWOL all the time drunk and high on coke.
