Ryan says he feels 'really good' in ticket's campaign role

LAKELAND, Fla. – Paul Ryan dismissed claims Friday afternoon that he is not being properly utilized on the campaign trail as Mitt Romney’s running mate.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a major advocate of Ryan being tapped as VP, told a Milwaukee radio host earlier in the day the Romney campaign needs “to use him [Ryan] out on the trail more effectively, they need to have more of him rub off on Mitt.”

Ryan said he disagrees with the claims made by his fellow Cheesehead, saying he is “absolutely” being utilized enough.

“Oh, he [Walker] is just a good backer of mine. I feel really good about it [his role]. Look, I am doing the things I want to do,” Ryan said inside “Walker’s Produce” -- a local fruit stand. “Look at what we are doing, we are talking to local people, going around the country talking to local press. I am excited about my role. I feel very comfortable with it.”

The quick stop outside of Tampa came just a couple hours after the GOP presidential nominee released his complete 2011 taxes – something Republicans and Democrats alike have been pressuring Romney to do for some time. Romney paid more than $1.9 million in taxes on income of about $13.7 million and donated about $4 million to charity, although he only claimed a deduction of about $2.25 million from those donations, according to the campaign.

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, R-Wis., appears at an AARP convention Friday in New Orleans.

Ryan reacted to Romney’s “unique” tax situation.

"I think that what this shows is that the Romneys are extremely generous people,” he told reporters. “They gave away 30 percent of their income to charity so Mitt Romney has always believed to whom much is given, much is required and he is living proof of that and this just shows you how generous the Romneys are as people."

The seven-term Wisconsin congressman, who walked thru the outdoor market in the Sunshine State with his 78-year-old mom, Betty, who is a Florida resident, held his only public event earlier in the day when he addressed the AARP convention in New Orleans. Ryan received a very unfriendly welcome by the crowd but it was nothing he didn’t expect.

“Entitlement reform has unfortunately been made very partisan by partisans and so I have gotten that kind of reaction and unfortunately it's what we've come to expect because the politics of reforming entitlements has become very bitter,” he said before heading to attend private fundraiser in the area. “It's very unfortunate because if we let the politics get the best of us-- these problems are going to get out of our control. We've got to fix Medicare before it goes bankrupt."

According to the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Thursday, the Romney-Ryan ticket trails President Barack Obama in terms of how voters believe each ticket would deal with Medicare: 47 percent of voters surveyed believe Obama would better deal with the program compared to just 37 percent who believer Romney would handle it better.

Glad Ryan is making a visit to his mom in Florida.

Visiting fruit stands , picking out the best limes, lemons etc is a wonderful way to spend your time while your guy running on the ticket is running around making another word salad at every stop.

If life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

It would be dumb for Ryan to even say he was not being utilized to his fullest regardless of what he truly thinks. If he agrees with Walker he kept his mouth shut. You don't snub the boss and expect to be a team. It's going to be an interesting election come November. Have a good weekend.

I think it's "If life gives you lemons.....become someone else's running mate".

So Scott Walker says of Ryan that "they need to have more of him rub off on Mitt.”

Ryan counters by saying that "Entitlement reform has unfortunately been made very partisan by partisans and so I have gotten that kind of reaction and unfortunately it's what we've come to expect because the politics of reforming entitlements has become very bitter".

Tasty word salad. Sounds like Romney's rubbing off on Ryan, not the other way around.....

Republicans Job's Bill just passed by the House.

The United States House of Representatives passed a bill — House Resolution 3012 — which favors highly skilled workers by removing country-specific caps on immigrant engineers, computer scientists and other professionals.

House representatives voted 389 to 15 in favor of HR 3012 or the "Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act." The bill is also expected to pass in the Senate.

By eliminating the cap from each country on high-skilled working visa, talented immigrants from India, Philippines, China and other emerging economies can work in the US, the report said.

The Republicans want to create jobs alright, just not for Americans!! They want to bring low wage highly workers to take our places unless we will work for lower wages.

Republicans use bigotry and fear tactics through their corporate media bullhorns to get ignorant masses to support them.

They pander to the religious right on all of the hot-button topics to get out their vote, but there is nothing truly religious about those who "took over the party" except perhaps their worshiping at the altar of greed and power.

Thing is...the conservative brain is easy pickin's for the corporatist propaganda methods. They're wired to see the negative, fear change, avoid the unknown. They look for problems rather than solutions. I don't think they can help it. They're born that way.

So, they've always been here. The difference now is the far more prevalent corporatist influence of negativity, hate and fear on the fragile conservative brain than ever before due to corporate TV, political talk radio.

Ed Unfit to govern. That would be the President. Doesn't go to his briefings, so doesn't ask questions. Told the Ambassador is missing and he goes to bed. Gets up says that movie is the problem and flies to vegas for a fundraiser. A real leader would have cancelled that trip and stayed in the White House getting to the bottom of the problem. A week later still blaming the movie, even with evidence to the contrary, see univsion interview and then doesn't answer their questions, but goes about blaming everyone else for immigration reform not getting passed. This he can't blame on Bush. Jimmy Carter Barack Obama similar situations and we all know how that turned out for the Dems.

Sorry to see Ambasssador Stevens being dragged down the street. Probably tortured and Obama was sleeping Disgraceful. What a tragedy that could have been prevented with appropriate security at the consulate on 9-11 especially with advance knowledge of possible violence. Guess that wasn't actionable enough intelligence, wonder if they think differently today. This Marine is certainly glad President Bush didn't wait for more actionable intelligence about Iraq otherwise there may be more dead Americans than there are.

It is even worse than that. When a company brings a worker in on an H1B visa, they "sponsor" the worker. Remove the company sponsorship and the worker is deported back to his/her country. So what do you suppose happens to H1B workers who complain about working conditions, hours or anything else about their job?

Make no mistake - H1B allows companies to hire slave-labor at lower than US labor rates. And the threat of deportation makes it impossible for these workers to object to anything companies want to do to them.

The dumbnuts are making it easy for Obama and the rest of us. I guess they missed the part when Bush tried to end Social Security and we handed him an embarrasing defeat on that issue. The same thing is true of ending Medicare, they are third rails, you step on them and you're cooked.

Any party that condones voter supression doesn't deserve to exist. It looks like the new Republican Party should have stayed old and actually kept some conservatives in it that had some smarts and loyalty to the country and did their jobs.

This last bill the Republicans defeated that had a 58 to 40 vote in favor was about jobs for veterans. Do the Rightees really think it was a smart move to screw those that put their lives on the line?

The reason Romney is still so cock sure is he knows they will soon drop the BIG money bomb on this election and figures money will beat anything. If nothing else, that makes it a for sure I'm getting my ass out to vote for Obama. As to local elections, I vote against all incumbents regardless of what party they belong to because they are owned by the three or four major corporations that run Maui and most of Hawaii.

Maybe someday sanity will return to America.

Interestingly enough, this new development is at odds with his previous statements that paying a single dollar more in taxes than he owes would disqualify him to be President.

I think the Seniors of America can see right thru the LIES being told by the Republicans. AARP is an organization formed for older Americans to band together against changing the Laws limiting the access to affordable health Care and Social Security.

Representative Ryan has a lot of nerve to stand in front of this group and say he is going to make Social Security a Voucher System. If I was there I would have booed his remarks and walked out of the speech when it became obvious that he was LIEING.

I did not know that the AARP President asked him to leave but it would have been the correct thing to do because he was disrupting the Convention. He and Romney are completely disconnected from the vast majority of American Citizens.

How can they even think they will be successful Pissing of vast segments of the American population.

Carpet bombing (lies) in the final 30 days (and Rove/GPS all the way down ticket too), along with voter suppression is what the GOP/Romney are counting on. Let's hope voters prove money can't buy elections.

Also, based on the vacation Romney took after the convention and low number of campaign rallies, I'll bet Romney would break the record for the most vacation taken by a POTUS -- which is in line with the Do Nothing GOP House that skipped out of Washington.

Ryan had no family money to make him a rich man like Romney. He has never held a steady job without a government paycheck. He rubbed elbows (and kissed butt) with several wealthy republican Congressional leaders to gain their support for his own Congressional seat in 1998. The only income tax he has ever payed is on his own taxpayer funded income.

The man is fairly wealthy now after spending 14 years in Congress selling his every vote to the highest paying corporate bidder. He drags his Mama around to every event where he discusses his plans to cut "entitlements" like Social Security and Medicare to the point that he can eventually eliminate them entirely. He presents her as if she too, has something to lose. She seems like a sweet old lady, though she could have more aptly named him Pinocchio Ebenezer(as in Scrooge) Ryan.

He is not a complete monster. His Mama will be well taken care of with his ill-gotten gains until the day she dies. It's your Mama, my Mama and everybody else's Mama that he is eager to through off the train to give even more corporate welfare to his benefactors and puppet masters.

I'm the only real star here, and I should be at the head of the ticket. It's time for Mitt to drop out and let me find a running mate with less baggage and more consistency. I can't believe the party's letting Romney throw away my future in the White House."

I prefer to see it as a public service by educating the American people on what a piece of work Paul Ryan really is. Soon it'll just be Paul and his main squeeze, Ayn Rand.

        nathan,

I am sure Ryan is thinking of his future.

This stint as a good loyal soldier will be behind him soon.

Then he can set his sights on being the tea party champion in the coming civil war inside the Repulbican party for the next four years.

The great thing is that Feisty will be back to serve the popcorn by that time.

The coming disintegration of the loose coalition of disparate elements known as the "Conservative Movement" will be most entertaining. It's still to be determined whether that will be this cycle or if they'll double down on failure and further marginalize themselves next time around.

Northstar - the fact that either Romney or Ryan are the BEST the GOP has to offer is truly a sad comment on the Republican party.

It will be interesting to see Joe Biden and Ryan during the debate!

Wisconsin is really quicksand for the Republicans at the moment. Ryan better get home and campaign in that congressional district of his if he wants any job at all in January.

Romney was perceived before the conventions as someone aloof and insensitive to the average voter. So he brought in the Grinch to help him compete for the 10% in the middle. It is another monumental disaster. Romney looks like the plant owner that elects to close shop and move production overseas. Ryan looks like the guy that personally hands out the pink slips. There is nothing empathetic or human about either of them. They're both robots. Romney's programming is designed for misdirection. Ryan's programming is more straight forward and a little meaner.

Humorously accurate! I could actually see Ryan handing out the pink slips with a smirk on his homely face. Speaking of homely faces, Romney should let Ryan use the spray tanning booth. That man almost looks like death warmed over.

Walker must be trying to add some levity to what is a really bad campaign.

This had to be a joke by Walker, since I seriously doubt Romney needs the kind of reception and booing Ryan received just today.

It is amazing that so many on the fringe like Walker and Ryan are failing to note that the mainstream hears their message and flat out do not like it. In fact, it would appear Romney is also failing to recognize this fact.

Romney and Ryan remind me of snake oil salesmen -- their so-called "cure" will do more harm than good. Of course, Ryan feels "really good" -- he's set for life as is his running mate Romney -- it's the 47% who are mucked over ....

Tea Party governor Rick Scott made millions stealing from the federal government. http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2010-05-20/news/fl-rick-scott-governor-hca-20100520_1_medicare-fraud-case-hospitals-in-el-paso-hospital-giant-columbia

Florida Tea Party Republicans gave undying support to a thief of millions from Medicare. A thief that barely escaped prison by pleading the fifth amendment numerous times. A thief that was never really one of their own. He was a recent out-of-state transplant that came here specifically to become a multi-millionaire by robbing the huge population of Florida's elderly retirees of their Medicare.

Not only did he escape prosecution and punishment, he was rewarded for his efforts with the Governorship. All he had to do was whisper sweet nothings in the ears of the Tea Party and they gave him the entire state. His rank now as the most unpopular Governor in all 50 states is their reward. Governor Scott may be the largest s(t)inkhole in Florida history capable of swallowing the entire Tea Party. For that, we can all thankfully bid him adieu as his sinking skeletal frame is the last we ever see of the infamous Tea Party.

So the polls agree that Romney was telling the truth, that no matter what he says 47% of americans will support Mr. Obama and his marxist ideals.

It is so sad, that those who believe in this administrations czars and broken promises, continue to place not only there life but the lives of the whole nation to someone who clearly does not have the good of the people in their hearts.

JandS: lets be clear here - the folks Romney belittled as moochers and takers comprise 47% of the country - that is, those who pay no federal income taxes (his words). But I guarantee you that at least HALF of that 47% are Republicans who support him.

Was there ever a more damaging self-inflicted wound created by a presidential candidate's own words than this? I cannot recall anything comparable.

CKSM, the second worst recession in American history was courtesy of the Bush administration. That's why so many good American people no longer have jobs, are forced on food-stamps and unable to pay income tax.

Your people spent 8 years draining the pool and filling it with garbage. We fired your people and hired a new gang to clean it up. Our people have spent 3 1/2 years working hard to clean it up while your people resist their efforts and ferociously obstruct them every step of the way.

Your conclusion is that the new people are not working fast enough and are therefore incompetent. Your solution is to re-hire your people with identical proposals as the Bush administration that got of us into all of this trouble in the first place. Have you really thought this through? Do you have a hidden agenda? If not, there are professionals to help delusional people.

He sealed his fate when he hitched his wagon to Robmey's star. Robmey is a social Darwinist and so is Ryan. Which is funny because neither believes in evolution.
