VIDEO: The Week Ahead: Romney tries to turn it around

The big question for next week, is can Mitt Romney turn his campaign around, as he is slipping behind President Obama nationally and in key battleground states? He launches an Ohio bus tour, while President Obama also visits the Buckeye State, Virginia, and Wisconsin. And Romney talks Education Nation with NBC's Brian Williams.

Sometimes I get the feeling that many posters feel this is like a football game: the issues have no importance; the only thing that is important is that their side win and the other side loses.

Kannin, we definitely understand the issues and they are important. An R win scares me to death.

This one is for the liberals:

Day Two From Newsvine Solitary;

Greetings my lefty liberal friends!

Things are improving greatly here in the Newsvine clink!

Sargeant Sally has assigned me to the Re-Elect President Obama button assembly line (at least they are made here in the good old US of A, unlike Willard's who imports his from China).

The pay ain't great but the perks are fabulous, by the time I get out of here I should have enough buttons to cover half of IA!

Warden Tyler told me, if I keep up with my good behavior, he may allow me to go to arts & crafts class on Monday! Decisions...decisions... lol

I'm sorry to miss the party over at the Dew Drop Inn tonight - please know I'll be there in spirit!

If it wouldn't be too much to ask, I would greatly appreciate it if, you could hit B12 on the old jukebox and play a little "Jail House Rock"!

You all take care & keep fighting the good fight!

I don't see how anyone doesn't love our Feisty. She is taking her lumps with humor and class,...

Unlike the re-regs who feel ENTITLED to post here.

I think we should play Don't Cry Out Loud for poor little Queen Annie. I am sick of her whining. They prove EVERY SINGLE DAY how little they know about anything HARD.

My husband is convinced that they have R$mney on essential 'lock down' from public events as sort of a preventitive measure. The less exposure the less likely to gaffe.

PS. I am still calling BS on his 'scrubbed' Certified Tax Summaries. Talk about your basic Out of Touch! These two exemplify High Horse Mountain.

Obama may win this election, and we should be prepared for the consequences.

For a moment, put away all the sound bites, remarks taken out of context, "clever" misspellings, and childish name-calling. Let's take a factual look at just one of the things this election means to us personally inflation.

Last week the Obama administration started its third round of printing fiat money (currency that a government has declared to be legal tender, despite the fact that it has no intrinsic value and is not backed by reserves). $600 billion is the current estimate. That's almost $2,000 apiece for every man, woman, and child in the country!

In the past, when governments have printed fiat money to cover their own expenses, there has been a short-term economic bump, but then inflation is always the ultimate result. To us, personally, that means that, if Obama is reelected, the buying power of our savings and income will be severely reduced within about 18 months. Think about what you will need to do in order to survive inflation - it will happen.

Romney, by contrast, is a proponent of fiscal conservatism. That is, he recognizes the effects of deficit spending.

Except, he doesn't understand or recognize any of these issues. The only fiscal agenda he has is to give tax breaks to the wealthy.

Red - Romney took failing companies, whose own management couldn't save, and led 70% of them to success. You can't achieve that kind of superior performance without a keen understanding of basic fiscal issues.

Kannin - unfortunately Romney himself has proved he is a proponent of nothing. He doesn't know where he stands from one minute to the next. And, the Bain lies are just that - lies. They did as much damage with companies and they did good.

Romney has proved he can't be trusted to tell the truth from one day to the next. And, that is one of his many problems. No one knows what he believes - because he believes nothing.

Kannin -- That's FALSE. Romney is NOT a conservative. A true conservative would NOT INCREASE the defense budget.

Who willingly takes a pay cut so that they can pay their bills down? Does that make sense?

Romney still has a good chance at winning this, especially now that the focus has turned onto the economy. The fact that he paid significantly more than he had to on his taxes will help him, too. And maybe -- just maybe -- we can all learn the difference between your tax bracket and your EFFECTIVE tax rate!! (Most of us pay an effective tax rate of between 8 and 9%, significantly LESS than Romney's 14%.)

When did the topic turn to the economy? Mitt's still walking backwards from the video, releases his 2011 tax returns to change the subject except it just raises more questions.

As for Bain, it isn't a stellar performance when vulture capitalists take profitable companies and leverage them so heavily to buy those other companies Mitt claims to have saved; then the highly leveraged companies go bankrupt, Mitt and friends raid the pension funds and walk off with millions. Hardly a good business model for the country. Which programs will Mitt highly leverage in order to pay for increased military spending? Will programs will Mitt highly leverage to give more tax cuts to the wealthy and to big business? Will he leverage education, infrastructure, medical research, school lunch programs for the poor, Headstart, social security, medicare, medicaid to buy more tanks, ships and weapons then declare those other programs bankrupt and walk away? That's the questions every person touting Mitt's CEO stint at Bain should be asking.

I NEVER paid an effective tax rate lower than 20%, ever; in fact, most years I paid much higher.

Well, all, IR has promised to open the Dew Drop Inn, since my friends and I are celebrating birthdays today. Jody, where are you m'dear, first drinks on me! I am feeling martini'ish today. And maybe some champagne is in order too.

What oh what have we learned? Queen Ann is in a snit. And when she is in a snit, why, you had better pay attention. People are being MEAN to Mitty, don'tcha know, and she doesn't like it one darn bit, especially when it comes from her side of the aisle! How DARE they speak up to their betters that way? Queen Ann remembers when the serving class knew their place, and remembered to pull their forelocks and back slowly out of the room." Things were better then," she says, that class knew to be seen and not heard, especially when a stirrup cup needed to be refilled. Queen Ann has issued her orders, "STOP IT ", says she, "this is HARD" she complains, since she is completely unaccustomed to doing a job of work.

Sadly, no one is listening to her, and that campaign spins further and further out of control. Amusing as it is to watch, I am devoutly hoping we don't get to the point where Queen Ann forgets herself entirely and starts screaming "Off with their heads."

There are the debates coming up, and MItty is pretty sure that he is the best doggone debater that ever hogged a microphone. Well, I guess that remains to be seen.

Mark, Domenico, and FR staff: thanks for your patience. You guys are going to need a vacation when this election is over. We do appreciate this forum.

I am going to mosey over to the bar, have some drinks with my friends in celebration of the day. Youngest cherub, if you pop in to read this, know my pride in you for the stand you have taken and your willingness to put it on the line at the rally you will speak at Sunday. I will be there, and yes, I shall embarrass you by tearing up. NDD, me, too.

Thinking about Ann Romney's latest whining about being picked on, where does she get off? Noonan, Krystol, and the others are critical but not vicious. During 2008, Michelle and Barack Obama were not criticized, they were attacked with venom, endured racial slurs and disgusting cartoons, they were ridiculed for being black, their education was questioned. The birth certificate garbage, secret Muslim Kenyan to name a few of the utterly ridiculous and unfounded claims about President Obama; as well as unspeakable meanness and hate coming from the right. It was so ugly and it still often is yet not during the 2008 did we ever hear either Obama complain and whine to the media about how mean people were; and we still don't. Ann Romney has no clue what mean is; she should take a look at some of what was said about the Obamas as a reminder then maybe she'd realize she's lucky.

We don't want Sheriff Tyler and Matron Sally Mama Morton to uncover our escapades, lest we be stamping campaign buttons for a week.

Dear Ann,

Once upon a time there was a man called Harry Truman. He was in the office your man wants to be in but will never achieve. Mr. Truman said "If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen". That is assuming you know where the kitchen is. You know where it is don't you? It is where the slaves prepare your meals. You know the caviar and champaign, truffles and shark fin soup. Yea, that room.

If Romney turns around any more he'll look like Linda Blair in the movie the Exorcists. Except, we'll be the ones pucking at his new and improved candor.

With all the money between Romney and Rove and the Koch brothers trying to fool the American public, he is actually losing in every battleground state. And this is with an unemployment rate over 8%, housing forclosures reaching 4.8 million and the deficit at $14 trillion. And President Obama is black. You couldn't make this up. If it were a book no one would buy it unless it was in the science fiction section. Even then it stretches reality. It really has to suck to be a member of the Tea Party. You know the Republicans are going to get their asses kicked and you will be held responsible.

The deficit is not at 14 trillion. The debt may be. But I need to check again but that the last time I checked the deficit was less than when Obama came to office. The debt and deficit are two different things and I wish people would get them straight in their heads. That is what makes them so scared and afraid. And the Romney Ryan ticket want you to stay that way. When I took economics 5% unemployment was the normal rate in a great economy. That means only 3% or 3.1 is a problem. We could go back to 3 or 4 years after the crash in 1929 which I don't understand why more aren't pointing that out and havereal 25%. Now that would be problematic. Also the debt is not a concern for me either. Because when we had the highest debt ever only 14 years later he returned to the lowest debt ever That can happen now. But during the lowest debt ever we had great economic struggles - in the 70's. I think Obama is doing a great job with the hand he was dealt. Romney only has his bank acct to prove he can handle the job. Look at all the other rich people in the world like the Koch bros. Adelman, T Boone pickens. Does the fact they are wealthy mean they know how to run the country? Absolutely not. We need more than that from Romney and we just aren't seeing it. The video was the biggest insight we have had into his thinking. And woe to him that we saw it.

If Romney had taken the full deduction of $4 million from his taxes, his rate would have been LESS THAN 10%,...and he can get it back by filing a 1040X after he loses the election. By law he has three years. How slick.

If anyone can follow up on amending taxes, people need to follow up on Romney. I think he has a fixation and obsession for money. If he amends again, that needs to be made public in case he ever tries to run again for president. I wish some would actually check why Bush put Guantanemo base where he did so he could skirt the Constitution, how he skirted the Constitution with the torture issue. Why he went to war and how that panned out. So many things. And now some want to criticize Obama for all that stuff. I remember when Obama went into office, he included the wars in the debt and included money for crises which he knew we would have and he tried to honestly show what shape wewere in financially plus finishing up Bushs budget and cleaning up his mess. For some reason those aren't important for the Obama criticizers. Now it appears that Romney also likes to rearrange, hide and present a different side from reality. That is dangerous for America because we could think we are doing good and even congress could ie McCain when he said the fundamentals of our economy are sound in 2008 when bang we were on the edge of disaster in Nov 2008. We don't need thatfor our country. We need to vote no for any republican for at least 2 more decades so they can't fool us again til the mess is cleared out and gone.

        small irony alert

        they both attended Harvard Law School;

and only one of them was elected by their peers to lead the Harvard Law Review.

PS. It wasn't the one you think. Good luck with your guy,...his penchant for shoe leather could practically be classified as a fetish, at this point.

Romney is 100% right about the 47%. He will do this country a great service if he opens up a real debate along these lines. The main question of 2012 is: will “takers” led by Obama will overtake “makers” led by Romney. The "unholy alliance" of takers consisting of welfare free-loaders, overpaid public sector workers and militants in trade-unions may not have the majority but they are better organized than the silent majority. The “takers” know dead well that the large government is their ticket to good life. And they have Three Big Friends in the form of media + academia +Hollywood. I lived in a real life socialist country (The USSR) long enough to tell signs of socialism when I see them. Socialism is all about government taking care of people with average and below average abilities and/or motivation to work at the expense of the rest. That is exactly what has been happening under Obama. So far it has been funded largely by the debt so “makers” do not notice it much but it will soon take real tax increases to continue. Of course at the end both the “makers” and the “takers” living standards will fall as always happen under socialism (e.g. the USSR, Greece, Cuba) but it will take some, so people ignore it now. But when we get there it will be too late. Wake up America! You still have a chance of surviving as a great nation!

PS. A great recent example of how aggressive “takers” can win over makers is the teachers strike in Chicago. There you have some 25 thousand teachers doing a lousy job but paid on average $75K. Their pay is out of taxes on average Chicago worker of $49K. Teachers union requested more pay with little performance review and got most of what they wanted. Did we see "one million march" of angry parents to stop this absurdity?

He can't "turn it around" It's like lying under oath in a courtroom,....you're kinda stuck with the original lie. That's the quagmire the political money men like Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers got themselves into. They picked a candidate that accomplished the least because he'd have less video baggage to defend. But, low and behold, he steps on his own dick over and over like he can't get out of his own way. Then Paul Ryan states he ran a three minute mile. Most people didn't know if that was fast, slow or neither and didn't care. But, Runners World did and called him out on it because they are very careful of times people run since it's an issue of pride. And he's selling his new and improved Medicare to the elderly,..by,...telling them he'll cut them a break but screw those 55 and younger. Sure, that's the ticket with the best generation. Did he actually think that they had so little regard for their fellow Americans that his bait would win that argument? What he didn't count on is that they have something he doesn't; It's called character.
