House adjourns after few fall work days, punting on unfinished business

The House adjourned Friday at its earliest date before an election, finishing legislative business 46 days before Election Day.

Kansas Rep. Kevin Yoder (R) gaveled out the day’s last vote at 12:12 p.m. on Friday afternoon, marking a historic moment for the House of Representatives, which has not adjourned this early before an election in over 50 years.

All told, lawmakers gathered for a grand total of eight legislative days since leaving for their annual summer break in early August. Those eight days all took place this month, following the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.

House members leave Washington with major business left unfinished, too. No progress was made on undoing the so-called “fiscal cliff,” the combination of automatic spending cuts and tax hikes set to spring into place in January. And lawmakers went home to campaign for re-election without having resolved their differences to pass a farm bill.

The historic nature of the adjournment was not lost on House Democrats, who held an event to chastise Republicans for "cutting and running" in the face of some of the largest economic issues facing our country in decades.

"This is simply irresponsible, and Republicans ought to come back and finish their work, not cut and run and walk away from the American people," House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said at the event, "Shame on them, shame on them for abandoning our farmers, our economy, and families that need us to act."

The harsh reality of adjourning today is that Congress will have more work to do during its lame duck session – the time between an election and the inauguration of the next Congress – than in any post-election session in recent history.  The laundry list of items that needs to be dealt with has been deemed the "fiscal cliff," simply because if Congress does not act the US economy will likely plunge back into recession according to most economists.

Included in the items that Congress needs to act on is the Bush-era tax cuts, which are scheduled to expire at the end of the year.  Congress also needs to decide what to do about automatic, across-the-board, cuts that are scheduled to take place on January 2nd as a result of the failure of the supercommittee.

Congress will also need to pass a farm bill before year's end, and lawmakers will have to decide whether they want to extend the payroll tax cut for another year, even though all indications are that they will let that expire.

But instead of dealing with these issues before the November elections, there has been no tangible toward compromise by either side, and Republicans in the House have been focusing more on messaging bills that they can cite while campaigning back home in their districts.

Among those messaging bills was a Republican resolution passed Thursday to condemn what they allege is President Obama’s waiver of welfare reform’s work requirements. Even Republican vice presidential nominee Rep Paul Ryan (R-WI) made it back to vote for the resolution, which was based on a dubious claim about the nature of the waiver authorized by Obama.

Rep John Larson (D-CT) cited the bill as an example of the Republicans "cutting and running."

"The only requirement for work is that Republicans stay here and work instead of cutting and running," Larson said.

To that end, between August, September, and October of this year, the House will have only been in session a total of 12 days.

While those three months of the year typically carry a smaller workload during election years (House members need to campaign every two years to hold onto their jobs), the 12 legislative days the House is in session during that three-month period is less than that same period in any other presidential election year in over three decades.

Comparing it to recent history, the 12 days in 2012 is less than the 19 days the House was in session during those same three months in 2008 (during which the financial crisis resulted in more days than were previously scheduled), and the 20 days it was in session during that same time in 2004.

DAYS IN SESSION DURING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION YEARS (AUGUST, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER)

2012 (scheduled):

  • August - 4
  • September - 8
  • October - 0
  • TOTAL - 12

2008:

  • August - 1
  • September - 16
  • October - 2
  • TOTAL - 19

2004:

  • August - 0
  • September - 14
  • October - 6
  • TOTAL - 20

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) defended the schedule on Friday, citing the passage of Republican bills to extend all of the Bush-era tax cuts, and a bill to rework the automatic defense cuts, as examples of how Republicans are passing legislation that the Senate refuses to consider.

"We have done our work, but here Senate Democrats and a President, where is their responsibility?" Boehner said, "Where is their leadership? It just doesn't exist."

House Democratic leaders sent Boehner a letter on Thursday asking the speaker to cancel the adjournment so they could address the fiscal cliff, saying leaving DC "would be a dereliction of our duty to lead; it does not honor our responsibility to the American people."

Boehner turned the letter back against Senate Democrats, repeating a common refrain in the political game of ping-pong in which both sides blame the other house of Congress for their inability to act.

"When you think about the letter that they sent to me, about us not doing our work, how about the 40 jobs bills that are sitting in the United States Senate," Boehner said today.

The back and forth, which leads to nothing getting done, has taken its toll on Congress as a whole.  Recent approval ratings for Congress float just above 10 percent, and members are going back to their constituents knowing they have sent fewer bills to the President's desk than any Congress since World War II.

Currently, the House is scheduled to return to work on Nov. 13, with 12 legislative days on the calendar before the end of the year.  Fewer than two weeks of work could be an impossibly short amount of time to finish addressing so many issues, considering the supercommittee failed to reach a consensus after almost four months of negotiations.

Agree Chilled! I wish I got paid that well for doing NOTHING! What is amazing to me is that they appear to be PROUD of their records (except for Ryan, he forgot the few things he DID vote for!)

If you've got Congress members up for re-election, look at their records and VOTE their sorry butts OUT!

Vote them out......it is up to us. We cannot keep having more of the same, it is just not working.

These freeloaders, have most of whom are millionaires or well near it, we pay their handsome salaries, they have the best in health care, they travel all over the world, ostensibly on what is euphemistically called junkets, paid for by the taxpayers, and if they are there longer than 6 years they get a pension and some perks.

Since this present Congress came into being, John Boehner and his caucus, decided the less days they work, the more they could hinder the President at the same time they screw the country.

They campaigned on jobs, jobs, jobs, but instead focused on social issues, womens' rights and religion. And we pay them. For me the last straw was their refusal to pass the Veterans Jobs Bill this past week. Vote them out~

We need to do more than get rid of the incumbents, we need to trashcan both political parties. I say both, but in all honesty, the democrats would do well in a restructuring in government. When todays republicans say that Clinton and Obama are far left, that tells me just how away from center they are. I am a true republican, in the historic sense, why do I have to vote democrat if I want my voice heard?

For those who vote Republican, no matter what... Those who want to regulate MY bedroom and MY life, those who want me to follow their religious views.... YOU ARE NOT A CONSERVATIVE OR A REPUBLICAN, YOU ARE A RADICAL!

This Congress has the lowest rating of any Congress in a long time, possibly ever and one would think that they might want to actually do something in the days leading up to election just to make it look good for the constituency. Sure other Congresses have done little before election season but they also did much more prior to August unlike this Congress that has done less prior to election season. Blame lays squarely on the weeper of the House and his obstructionist tea partiers.

What kind of lazy losers are these guys, why do they think the government owes them a living, why do they not take responsibility for themselves instead of living off the government teat, these must be the guys Romney was talking about. Republicans have no right to complain about any union contract, the deal these guys get is obscene, why doesn't the GOP demand a cut in their wages and benefits, they have written themselves a deal that makes the best union contract I have ever seen look damn shabby. What the hell happened to all this talk about how a persons pay should be determined by merit, why not apply that concept to members of Congress, why is it only memtion towards government employees who actually perform a service to the community. You can see why their hollow message will never carry the election for them, because they themselves look ridiculous when talking that crap, because nobody is less deserving of the pay and benefits they receive than them. Can you believe they have the gall to call for cuts for teachers and others, and to limit their right tocollectively bargain for a fraction of the pay and benefits Congress steals from us.

Congress should be paid the same as the median income for working Americans (about $46,000/year). Since they don't work full time, they should have to pay for their own health insurance benefits, and they should not be able to accrue any pension benefits either.

Let them live like the people they are supposed to represent and maybe they will start to do things to make this a better nation.

One more thing: Any Representative caught taking money from lobbyists or caught trading on insider information should go immediately to prison.

Republicans are not conservative, they're not patriotic. We now know that even before President Obama was inaugurated, they met together to say, we're going to make this president fail. I don't think there's been a single time that an opposition party has made that their priority, but especially at a time of a national crisis, when we had two wars that they had botched...especially at a time when the whole American economy and the global economy were on the edge of an abyss. You don't want the president to fail if you're a patriot. If the president fails - we've only got one at a time - the country fails, and tens of millions of Americans suffer. No real patriot would ever want to do that!

COinFL: One more thing: Any Representative caught taking money from lobbyists or caught trading on insider information should go immediately to prison.

We have to demand fully taxpayer-funded elections at every level and form a Constitutional amendment erasing Citizens United and "money as free speech," particularly. We need to demand corporations can not contribute to election campaigns, and yes, make accepting corporate funds for any purpose the felony bribery it actually is. In fact, we should make accepting corporate funding an act of treason.

We also need legislation requiring that Congressional members themselves, and not corporate lawyers, write all laws. (Congress hasn't written any legislation of its own in about three decades--why we're in this madness!) To that end, all members of the House and Senate should be lawyers. (Writing law=lawyers, get it?)

But to do this, we need a Congress ready, willing, and able to produce such legislation and pass it. For that, we need a democratic Congress and to get the money out FIRST.

At least a democratic Congress will pass the President's Jobs Bill, Transportation Bill, and Veterans Aid Bill, all of which could have had this country up and running several years ago.

AND THEY BLAME OBAMA. Reprehensible

I wish more voters were paying attention to this issue!!!

Republicans Job's Bill just passed by the House.

The United States House of Representatives passed a bill — House Resolution 3012 — which
favors highly skilled workers by removing country-specific caps on immigrant
engineers, computer scientists and other professionals. House representatives voted 389 to 15 in favor of HR 3012 or the "Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act." The bill is also expected to pass in the Senate.

By eliminating the cap from each country on high-skilled working visa, talented immigrants
from India, Philippines, China and other emerging economies can work in the US,
the report said.

The Republicans want to create jobs alright, just not for Americans!! They want to
bring low wage highly workers to take our places unless we will work for lower
wages.

House Democratic leaders sent Boehner a letter on Thursday asking the speaker to cancel the adjournment so they could address the fiscal cliff, saying leaving DC "would be a dereliction of our duty to lead; it does not honor our responsibility to the American people."

12 days of work in three months, now they are off to 7 weeks vacation, and BEGGING to be re-elected, that is what this is about, campaigning in their districts for re-election.

Even the passage of the Veterans Aid Bill, was not important to this dog. That is pathetic!!!

Democrats sending the "cry baby" a letter almost begging him to cancel and work for the American people the way they should, and he sends a letter back, nit-picking, back and forth bull@!$%#.

The GOP are bordering on obstruction of the America. There whole plan since President Obama's inauguration was to weaken and destroy his Presidency to make sure he is a one term President.

On January 20, 2009 Republican Leaders in Congress plotted to sabotage and undermine U.S. Economy during President Obama's Inauguration:

The Guest List:

Frank Luntz - GOP Minister of Propaganda

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), their wannabe VP

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA)

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA),

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX),

Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX),

Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI)

Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA),

Sen. Jim DeMint (SC-R),

Sen. Jon Kyl (AZ-R),

Sen. Tom Coburn (OK-R),

Sen. John Ensign (NV-R) and

Sen. Bob Corker (TN-R).

During President Obama's inauguration, these people above were planning to destroy America while McConnell was saying:

"The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told National Journal's Major Garrett in October.

"Well, that is true," McConnell replied. "That's my single most important political goal, along with every active Republican in the country."

Even with the country on the brink of default, the Senate's highest ranking Republican says his

"single most important POLITICAL goal, along with EVERY ACTIVE REPUBLICAN"

is to make Barack Obama a one-term president.

They hated President Obama from day one, never wanted him to succeed.

If Harry Reid would actually let those House bills come to the floor of the Senate for debate, then his finger pointing might have some validity. Unfortunately, he refuses to allow them to even be debated and voted on, so it would seem that the obstruction is actually happening in the Senate. It's kind of hard to reach any kind of compromise if you won't even allow the discussion in the first place.

If the House bills are so onerous that that they won't pass the Senate, then let us hear the debate on them. At least then well be able to form our own opinion on what is being proposed by both sides. Of course this way, nobody has to take an official voting position that might come back to bite them in the arse when election time rolls around.

So programmed that way since Rove and Norquist took over the republican party along with the extreme rt wingers Tea Baggers.

The night President Obama took office 14-15 republican politicians and Frank Lutz of Fox news met to pledge to vote against any bill that would make president Obama look good in the next election in 2012. pledged to vote against the country for 4 years to make president Obama a one term president. And obstruct they did in record amounts! After obstructing the recovery of America for almost 4 years, the repubs whine that the recovery which they tried to stop is not good enough! John Boehner even told his fellow repubs not to have anything to do with Lutz from Fox because he was toxic, so they did not invite him to the pledge meeting.

Stand up and shout for the recovery of America, stand against the rt wingers who pledge to take the nation down.

Unfortunately, our president didn't do this for his 2,000+ page law. That's why we had to and will have to contend with bs like 1099s for commercial trucker's fuel purchases. You know, the sneaky knife in the back kind of crap that's buried in adminstrative language designed to make some political pos rich.

No defense for any of the officials in Washington. The same sh_t happened two years ago when there was a Democrat running things. I didn't see or hear much whining from the NBC/MSNBC wingnut factory then.

I hate hypocrites...

Typical for Mr. Obama to "shoot first then aim later" accusing Rep. Ryan for NOTHING, while Mr. Obama's surrogate-in-Chief in the Senate, Mr. "Veto" Reid, does nothing concerning the FARM BILL but goes on vacation:

The latest adventure from Barack Obama’s truth-challenged campaign took place in Iowa, where the President accused Rep. Paul Ryan, vice presidential candidate on the Republican ticket, of being “one of those leaders in Congress standing in the way” of a farm bill that would “provide relief and certainty to U.S. farmers and ranchers.”

“So, if you happen to see Congressman Ryan, tell him how important this farm bill is to Iowa and our rural communities. It’s time to put politics aside and pass it right away,” the President urged Iowa voters.

Which is a nice sound bite… except for the fact that the House of Representatives passed the farm bill. The Senate, which is controlled by do-nothing Harry Reid and the Democrats, decided to blow out of Washington without voting on it.

The Campaigner-in-Chief ATTACKING someone for NOTHING yet his own Senate Leader (Mr. "Veto" Reid) is responsible for the lack of legislation being passed.

people ask how do we change it? we wont see any true change with both the republican and democratic parties in charge. we as a nation need to invoke our right under the constitution of the US to rebel against our current government. we need to remove them all from office and start over with the average american citizen so we can set things right again. now is the time to march on washington and say enough is enough. we can do this without violence but with a strong voice. we need to get active get on the whitehouse steps all together and stand up for our country.

on election day instead of voting by paper go to dc and vote with our voices not a piece of paper, say enough is enough we dont want any of you, we want true change.

This is happening because they want to postpone any actions until after the elections. Reid is sitting on a truckload of bills, refuses to bring them up for votes, he's playing politics big time and the republicans are palying as well. If Obama wins, then the game plan will go one way, if Romney wins, it will go the other way. What we have are two parties, neither of which is worth much, squabbling away while the country slides downhill. Reid, the little slimeball, is too busy carrying Obama's water to actually do anything. Notice how he canceled senate sessions for the Massachusetts senate debates?

I think congressional ratings will soon be in the negative numbers.

There is an easy way and even the thought of it scares them but they don't believe we will do it. Vote against every incumbent in the House and then two years later do it again. When we do that they will get the message. Parties won't matter because they are going to loose their job anyway. I think that having done this two times the House will get the message. The Senate due to their 6 year terms wouldnt be effective as it would take to long. But they would get the message quick if they saw it happen in the House. I think that even a unified election campaign "Vote Against the Incumbent" would give them something to worry about. Do we have the guts? No, we would never do it would we. So why don't we all just shut up and go to a stupid movie. Can you see the polls ( R Boobo 1%+/99% negative, D dilly 1% +/99%negative ) They will alwasys get some votes from themselves and family but man would that poll scare the heck out of them.

Not a fan of Boehner, but he is right here. What's the point in the House staying? At least by shutting it down it may save some utility bills. They've been passing bills left and right and Reid sits on his fat arse and does nothing. Heck, they haven't even passed any alternative bills so that they could go through a reconciliation process. The best thing that can happen is for the House to go home. Every time they've hung around Boehner and the RINOs end up caving in. So, naturally, Reid has reached the conclusion that all he has to do is wait Boehner out and the RINOs will cave again. It's the best reason in the world for the repubs to make sure that Boehner loses his House leadership position in 2013. It's hard enough fighting against the socialist dems, but when you have to fight against the socialist leadership in your own party....... well, it's time to realize that seniority is not a reason to put someone in such an important position.

Of course, there's a reason why in the old days they used to meet only every other year. The less often they meet the less damage they can do to the country.

Hi Debi: Every step our government takes should have the support of 'the People'. Otherwise, we are trying to fly. Any 'rebellion' or 'revolution' is the result of government trying to walk with too little support - people trying to ensure they support what the government does. Let us gather together where we can on solid footing, and not walk where we should not go.

It's we the people to didn't learn that the Republican party are not for the people. Proof, millions lost their jobs, their homes, while others ended homeless. Every incumbent house member, specially Repub's, should be voted out of office in Nov. and NO retirement pay for any of them, I don't care if they have served a lifetime there, including Democrats. As has been proposed before a constitutional amendment limited house members to 6 years (3 terms), and senate members to 12 years (2 terms), passed by every citizen in the US who are of voting age at that time. If the US Supreme Court tries to say it is unconstitutional, remind them who has the real power.

Mr. Obama's surrogate-in-Chief in the Senate, Mr. "Veto" Reid, does nothing concerning the FARM BILL but goes on vacation

This bill should NOT be voted on. The Republicans in the HR put a "bought and paid for" rider onto the bill that it is a travesty of the law making process...

    Consider the Monsanto rider:

The Center for Food Safety calls the provision “nothing more than a Monsanto profit assurance provision,” according to Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of that organization. Many GE crops, seeds, and plants can’t be sold in international markets. If this rider becomes law, the USDA must approve all permits for planting unapproved GE crops. And since many GE plants cross-pollinate, plants in nearby fields may incorporate the genetically engineered genes into their DNA. That would prevent those crops from being sold on the international market.

This is a killer for US products in foreign markets, just about guaranteed to limit US exports. But it will certainly help Monsanto's bottom line. How much do you reckon Republicans took from Monsanto to write this piece of legislation?

WE have seen the STATUS of our country go into the CRAPPER because of him--KING OBAMA-

...the numbers for Bush's last three months. Between October and November, 597,000 jobs were lost; between November and December, 681,000 were lost; and between December and January, 741,000 were lost.

April 2012 marks the 26th straight month of gains in private-sector employment, for a total of 4.2 million private-sector jobs.

    DJIA Dec 26, 2008 8515
    DJIA Sep 21, 2012 13579

Dec 29, 2008 (Bloomberg) U.S. corporate earnings fell for a sixth-straight quarter, the longest streak in at least 20 years, as consumer spending on automobiles, homes and retailers collapsed.

May 11, 2012 Fortune magazine released its ranking of the 500 biggest US corporations Monday, which showed that they received a record-breaking $824 billion in combined profits in 2011, up 16 percent from 2010.

Nope! George W. Bush, aided and abetted by a Republican majority in both houses for 6 out of his 8 years, put our country in the CRAPPER. Obama kept it from getting flushed!

This is nothing new, Congress has always been made up of sponges and freeloaders. Why do you think they fight so hard to get re-elected again and again so they can remain at this job for life? This isn't just during election years, either. Both Democrats and Republicans do this. Let's not forget President Obama spent his first 9 months as Senator flying around the country at the expense of tax payers, not on government business, but to promote his book and do book signings. Tax payers paid for his travel, food and lodging and paid him as a Senator and his publisher paid him for the speeches and signings - what better way to make a living?

Sorry, Forrest, but the minimum wage is 7.25 dollars per hour, not 7.25 cents.

What the Congress does is not anything different to what the Presidential Obama, spends most of his time playing golf, vacationing and doing his political campaign for reelection, while burns the Middle East and our ambassador and Libya is dead. Still don't have time to meet with his national security committee in the White House. That is why its foreign policy is totally a failure. Bonehead the crying, lying drunk must get back to the golf course and the club house bar. He isn't worth crap and we're allowing him and his cohorts to live in luxury with cadillac health insurance and all sorts of perks they don't deserve. They are nothing but parasites living off us taxpayers. It's time to shut them down.

They should have reasonable pay based on time working, no health insurance better than what the rest of us working people have and no extras. Paul Ryan is a good example of a real parasite. What has he ever accomplished. Nothing. Take a look at his record. He has been living off us taxpayers for years thinking he's some big hotshot while collecting all the perks. He has nothing to worry about. Is this who we want making decisions on what the rest of society should have? What a hypocrite. He has voted for everything he says he is against.

Yes. And "we" PAY them to do it.

It's time we taxpayers demonstrate and DEMAND that they pass a bi-partisan bill to LOWER THEIR SALARIES AND ELIMINATE THEIR TAX-PAYER FUNDED RETIREMENT BENEFIT. Oh, and let's not forget THEIR HEALTH CARE COVERAGE. They need to be on this "new" national health care insurance as well......

As far as their salaries go, WE THE TAXPAYERS should determine that PLUS it should be up to us whether or not they get "raises," etc.

Anyone have any ideas as to how to get this going???? Please let us all know if you do! (I'm all ears plus I can read pretty well!!!!!!)

Actually, yes I do know a way.

There are two ways to make an amendment to the Constitution.

    1 If Congress proposes one.

2 If 2/3 of the states demand one.

If all states were to get a proposition on the ballot to demand a repeal of the Sixteenth Amendment(right to tax), and if 2/3 of the states passed it, it would cut the funding for the Federal government. And if 3/4 of the states passed it, it would be considered ratified, and become law.

Imagine the ego's dropping all over Washington when they would have to start begging the states for funding. The States could tax what the Federal government was so there would be no breakdown, and SS and Medicare would still be sent to the Fed's with a condition that it can't be borrowed from. As far as defense goes, that could be allocated by the states, and if I am not mistaken, we have enough arms to blow up the world a hundred fold, so there is really no threat.

    Hi Debi,

I can answer your question, but I suspect you will disregard the answer. See, most of the posters on this thread are simply delusional. They think that ever more government, meaning more laws, more regulations, more spending, and more taxing, is the best way to produce a viable society with a dynamic economy. The problem has never been money in politics. Or the lack of bills passed into law. The problem is us, the American people, who seem to want, like Mr. Romney correctly notes, more free stuff for ourselves paid for by someone we don't personally know.

The problem, in a governmental sense, is extra-constitutionalism. Rep. Clyburn, #3 Democrat in the House, PROUDLY asserts that the vast majority of what he supports in Congress, and what Congress enacts year after year, are things not authorized by the constitution. So, when things, so to speak, hit the fan in a society governed in large part by people who think the solution to all problems can be found in DC, and DC doesn't then solve the problem, then the larger society blames DC for not "doing something".

My solution is for less government. FAR less government. If you can't articulate a Congressional duty in Article One for the Utopian policy you favor, then, sorry, your Utopian policy can be shoved right up your...well you can guess the rest. Or, if you really really really want it to happen, but the Constitution doesn't give you the power to do it, then--GASP!!!--you might want to invoke Article Five provisions and change the damned Constitution.

Congress doing nearly nothing is probably the only thing keeping us from complete failure at this point.

These were released under the freedom of information act. Apparently, the Vietnam war could have been prevented if the US government had told France to vacate and help them develop their own democracy. Please, explain to all of us how "meaningful" invading Iraq was; what have we gained in Afghanistan, or how the loss of thousands of lives in the Vietnam War was "meaningful".

These wars had nothing to do with "patriotism" and the defense of our homeland, but had everything to do with the use and loss of American bodies for taxpayer funded muscle to protect corporations operating in the Middle East and politics. The government views these losses as simply "collateral damage". Personally, I am sick and damn tired of these meaningless wars. Next time a politician wants to protect their oil or gas investment, let them go and fight or let them pay for a private militia.

Accusing those of being a traitor as opposed to a true patriot for pointing out the wrong path our government is leading us is not being able to see the forest for the trees.

I agree that jsc's post is filled with anger, and I understand your thoughts. However, I believe out of respect, service members should be listened to. They are the best insight into how the POTUS is capable of doing his/her job. Over and over again on the vine I have read posts by military that slam the politics of the administration, both this and the last, and no one is listening. Jsc's post may be only political, that I don't know, but we have listened to the truth from our leaders when we should have been listening to the truth from those in the field. How many generals have been replaced because they disagreed with the POTUS? Our brave men and women are in a shooting gallery due to a faulty foreign policy of sticking our noses into sovereign business.

My post was to point out that jsc may not be a traitor, but a patriot. Time will tell.

Sadly, those who voluntarily joined up to "kick some a$$" in Iraq, did it even though it was completely meaningless.

Those whose lies attempted to justify to the people of this country and lied to those who fought in the invasion of Iraq, are the true traitors.

    Hi Debi,

Well, I didn't really reach a conclusion which is why I wrote that I "suspect" you would disagree. It doesn't take much looking to see that most people on this particular site are, for lack of a better word, to the left and so tend to support ever larger government. It's good that you are similar to me and want less government, but I really still think "the solution" is nothing short of Americans wanting less rather than more government.

      #1.131 - Sat Sep 22, 2012 8:33 PM EDT

      Hey Max,

I guess it never occurred to you that the Framers could have, if your view were theirs, simply wrote the Constitution in one line: Whatever Congress does and the President agrees to is Constitutional. Dang, instead, they wasted all those years arguing and debating about what the government could and could not do. What fools they were for not foreseeing the obvious constitutional brilliance you possess.

Well, sadly I do not possess your constitutional prowess so I think I will continue to labor under the quaint idea that the Constitution is a document meant to limit governmental powers and duties, rather than accept your view that anything they want to do is just fine and dandy. So, given my outdated view of my country, I simply cannot accept your insane assertion that it is government action which improves peoples lives beyond the actions allowed to the government by the Constitution. In other words, it isn't the lack of governmental activity that has brought millions of people to their economic knees. Just the opposite.

Your every desire to create a utopian society is what will, finally, kill this Golden Goose. See, unlike you, the founders DID know history, and DID know that every great society preceding ours fell for this very reason, and this is why they specifically tried to limit federal duties to only those which require federal action. You can find these duties plainly stated in Article One, or, if you prefer, you can continue to ignore their collective wisdom, essentially peeing on their graves, and continue to whine about the demise of your country, all the while you are strangling it.

        Rich:

That's the problem with labeling someone a "lefty" or a "righty", liberal or conservative, or Democrat or Republican. It doesn't allow independent thinking out of the box, just the way the politicians like it. Keeping us operating within a "team" mentality then only requires a flip of the switch on their part to do their bidding.

Less government doesn't necessarily mean corporations should be given greater free reign; as proven by the recent greatest transfer of wealth from people to the corporations this country has ever witnessed.

          #1.133 - Sat Sep 22, 2012 9:36 PM EDT

          Hi Debi,

No, there is no problem labelling one a lefty or a righty. The terms aren't precise, but they suffice for most issues most of the time. You are also wildy wrong about the transfer of wealth you decry. It didn't come about because corporations had free rein (it isn't free reign unless you meant it sarcastically), it came about because too many people wanted the government to control too many aspects of our lives. Economic liberty took the hit, crony capitalism and government-regulated profit making replaced it.

AIG, GM, et al, should all have been allowed to fail if, in fact, they were so poorly managed as you imply. The problem is that they weren't, in all cases, so poorly managed. People complain, for instance, about banks making risky loans, but what was risky about them? Who cared about income verification, or down payments, or credit histories, when Fannie and Freddie were poised to buy up as much risky paper as was necessary in order to keep inflating the real estate market bubble.

If you were a loan officer and you DIDN'T make these loans, particularly when they were so profitable without much risk at all, then you would have been the one acting irrationally. I'm not saying it was good, or even right. What I'm saying is that BECAUSE of governmental involvement in many areas of the real estate/mortgage industry, lenders were able to make the kinds of loans that fueled the speculation and inflated the bubble. Without loan guarantees, or first time credits, or even mortgage interest deductions, and without a doubt secondary paper market purchases of assets, lenders would NEVER have been able to loan like they did.

The market in fact worked flawlessly. It was our desire to manipulate it for our own social benefit that caused the disaster. So, did more regulation help, or hurt? Corporations had less free rein. Did that help, or hurt? Had all those firms that were bailed out been allowed to fail, they would have gone through a traditional bankruptcy process and their assets would have been sold off for market values, rather than have the government step in and forcefully take your money to give to those firms and so prop up failure. All we did was trade meddling misfeasance with bankruptcy malfeasance.

And all so that politicians could claim to a credulous public, like Maxgiver, that jobs were saved. Funny, almost no one ever wonders how much each saved job cost. The answer is, depending on how you want to do the math, well over a million dollars for each job saved. So, yes, we saved jobs and in the process have become FAR less wealthy than before. Of course, the money, really, is going to come from our unborn heirs. Can you imagine a less moral economic policy? Yet Mr. Obama, one of the architects of this immorality, is likely to be re-elected in just 6.5 weeks.

            #1.134 - Sat Sep 22, 2012 11:10 PM EDT

            Rich:

No, there is no problem labelling one a lefty or a righty.

There are definite problems when you pigeon hole a person's political opinions. For instance, I can't vote in the primary elections because I am an independent. As an independent, if I want to vote democrat for one office and republican for another, I'm prohibited from voting at all.

Even you incorrectly "suspected" my political ideals and opinions.

...when Fannie and Freddie were poised to buy up as much risky paper as was necessary in order to keep inflating the real estate market bubble.

It wasn't just Fannie and Freddie who bought up the lethal paper, it was sold to investors all over the world.

...it came about because too many people wanted the government to control too many aspects of our lives.

Ah Rich, it came about because the Glass-Steagal Act, enacted since 1933, was repealed in 1999. That opened the corporate greed floodgates:

"Reasons for the Act - Commercial Speculation

Commercial banks were accused of being too speculative in the pre-Depression era, not only because they were investing their assets but also because they were buying new issues for resale to the public. Thus, banks became greedy, taking on huge risks in the hope of even bigger rewards. Banking itself became sloppy and objectives became blurred. Unsound loans were issued to companies in which the bank had invested, and clients would be encouraged to invest in those same stocks."

Do you really think the brightest politician could have conceived the scheme the banks and Wall Street formulated? The government unlocked the door, while the banks performed the robbery.

This is just more 'politics as usual'. If the House has already passed 40 bills that the Democratic Senate refuses to even discuss, what's the point of passing one or two more - just to have them sit on Harry Reid's desk.

The really OUTRAGEOUS thing is what Harry Reid is doing. The normal process is for the House to pass a bill, and then the Senate discusses it and amends it to their liking. Harry Reid refuses to even allow them to be discussed, much less amended. What has the SENATE been doing - certainly not passing any bills - or a Budget, which Harry Reid has ignored for the last 4 years.

Reid is the person REALLY responsible for this 'Do Nothing Congress'.

              #1.136 - Sat Sep 22, 2012 11:56 PM EDT

Roy, you're absolutely right! The little douchebag "Dusty" Harry (Reid) is the one obstructing anything getting done, so if they want to cry about a do-nothing anything, it's been a do-nothing senate because of the fool running it. But after we toss Bozobama in November, hopefully we'll take the senate, too, and Reid can go in the dustbin of history as the most useless senate leader of the modern era.

The party shills who post here and who's job it is to keep the "extremism" alive wouldn't have it any other way.

The politician mantra is to keep the people in the "team mentality"; they're much easier to control when it's time to herd the sheep.

                    Hi Debi,

Utter claptrap, sorry to say. I would only like to focus on the financial meltdown if you don't mind. It is irrelevant that those assets were sold all over the world since the point wasn't that they weren't, but that government policy supported that very outcome. It had nothing to do with Glass-Steagall's repeal, unless you think you might be able to explain each previous RE bubble, like the S and L scandal from the 80s given that Glass-Steagall was the law of the land at that time.

I think you dislike markets. I could be wrong, but your desire to blame bankers for concocting a dangerous financial scheme despite it being the direct result of governmental policy and regulation excuses politicians for their complicity. Calling them all douche bags is no help either. One such douche bag, you would call him, was President Bush. But it was that douche bag that went to Congress and asked other douche bags to reform the federal involvement in the mortgage industry. The goal? Compel F and F to reduce risk by buying less risky paper on the secondary market, increase down payment requirements, and reintroduce to the approval process checks on quality--all things which had, combined, created the bubble.

And what did Democrats in Congress say? Republicans were willing to make the reforms, but the opposition party instead called such reforms racist, or anti-poor. Who was right? Was Barney Frank and Maxine Waters and Bobby Scott and Alcie Hastings and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and Chris Dodd? Or was the man most hated by American democrats: George W. Bush? No, he was not a great president, but yes, he was right about this issue, the one which continues to vex our economy and our politics. Yet to this day Democrats support the very people who helped to create the problem and revile the very people who tried, and failed, to stop it.

To the point that it was just the bankers who did this to us...I made the case before, but now ask you directly, that lenders would have been FOOLS to not participate in this bubble given that because of governmental policy and regulation they were able to make massive profits at little risk. They got money up front--origination fees and the like, and then profitted again when they sold the note (in most cases holding just a fraction of the value and so limited their risk). Would you have refused to lend in these conditions? So, could policy makers have seen this coming? Yep. And some did, but who wanted the system to continue?

Well, democrats who loved the financial gravy train to them that were both Fannie and Freddie (the VAST majority of all campaign monies donated by F or F went to liberals). But more important than this corruption, and this was corruption which continues to this day, was the corruption of the American voters who WANTED this free ride. Had we as voters demanded that Congress not subsidize financial bubbles (or any bubble for that matter, like education loans, T-bills, tech, medical insurance) then those laws and regulations would not have been in place, and the very people you blame for this, the bankers and speculators who bought up the risky assets, would not have since it would have been THEIR money at risk, not your money that could be taken by your government.

I said it before but it bears repeating. The markets worked FLAWLESSLY in this case. The problem wasn't, and isn't, the market. The problem was, and is, our deep desire as voters to control outcomes in the market so that we can continue to get free stuff. And to fix it, all we have to do--and I don't mean to minimize it since, in fact, it has never before happened in human history--is to simply adhere to the limits our constitution places on governmental powers.

We are today in the seventh stage of the Eight Stages of Civilization. No nation, ever, has avoided this cycle. We can do it, but I fear we won't. Who wants to hear from their representatives that they should get less because less from the government means wealth and power and a better future for all? Certainly not the majority of American voters today.

No one forced Adam (bankers and Wall Street) to eat the forbidden fruit, but Eve (government) seems to get the lions share of the blame just because she was the one who offered it.

You people need to give them a break! It's hard to manage a wife, mistress, boy toy (for those special moments), taking the constant barrage of instructional phone calls and e-mails from the Koch Bros, Sheldon Adelson, Grover Norquist, Karl Rove, Ann Coulter, appearing on Fox News, dodging the lame stream media, operating your corporate interests like a good job creator, free "business lunches", managing the bribes you call "campaign contributions, stupping a staffer or two, making sure that your 5 houses are maintained, after work "business drinks", those business golf outings, fact finding missions to resort countries, constantly campaigning so you can keep the job you rarely do, managing your Cayman Island and Swiss bank accounts, It's easy to see how a guy like Mike Pence from my state would miss 86% of the votes and not submit one bill.

This is always what republicans do. They did the same during Bushs 8 years. They are lazy and dont give a squat about anything but collecting their checks. I say lets pay them by the hour. This is just an example of what we could expect under a Romney/Ryan WH. More of the same.

Repubs only care about screwing the taxpayers out fo their money and getting away with it with as little work as possible....and they have the nerve to call the 99% lazy. Pot calling the kettle black.

                            Hi Debi,

This is frustrating beause you are seemingly unwilling to pin any blame on the government for the very laws and regulations that businesses then followed. I think it was profoundly stupid for banks to do this, but the point is that everyone that did was acting rationally. Not good, or right, but rationally. To have prevented the mess you now rightly complain about all we had to do was stop.

Stop trying to alter market outcomes so we get better political outcomes. If this were only real estate and mortgages I doubt the problem could be so pervasive regardless of how much market manipulation we attempted. But this same problem exists in health care, education, even food. The solution would be hard to swallow for most people who are used to, and expect more, free stuff, but there is no other way.

                              Rich:

I never stated government was innocent. I believe we are living in a time of crony capitalism. But just because the government makes it easy for the corporations to operate willy nilly, doesn't mean they must do it. They don't have to eat the fruit just because it was offered.

The solution would be hard to swallow for most people who are used to, and expect more, free stuff, but there is no other way.

You mean the same "free stuff" the corporations expect; such as huge tax breaks, or paying no tax at all, funneling profits out of the country to offshore accounts, taxpayer funded loans at nearly 0% interest, while they loan that same money out at 2 - 2 1/2% and higher? Those kind of free things???

                                Hi Debi,

Apologies for the long delay. I fear you may not see the reply now. Two things...It is unreasonable to expect firms to not utilize the laws and regulations to their best benefit. The point here, which you seem to partly accept, is that these were bad policies. But when you couple bad policies with a belief that the government will fix your financial boo-boo then you get this kind of behavior. An analogy would be blaming only the drug user, even though the drug pusher was doing everything he could do wrong as well. Eliminate the drug pusher and the drug user has to get clean. Or, find another drug.

Point two...Yes, those kinds of free things. I would disagree with two items--corporate taxes and off-shore accounts--as being real. Corporations, whether they send a check to the IRS or not, never pay taxes. They collect them from you. And unless a firm wants to break the law they cannot send money off-shore to avoid tax payments on it. But the other things, like government guaranteed loans, or even grants themselves, or too-big-to-fail bailouts, or regulated profit-making, or company "specific" appropriations, yeah, all those things and more.

It's the same problem with the people too. We want free stuff. Of course nothing is free, and unless we can find a way to make the rich pay for all our free stuff we are instead just going to have our unborn heirs pay our way. This is embarrassing. We are a major world power, and yet we are whining to get someone to pay our way. But it's also immoral. It can never be moral to take someone elses money without their permission for our own use. But most Americans vote for exactly this outcome every two, then four, years.

And the public is unreasonable to expect the use of those laws and regulations passed to their best benefit?

And unless a firm wants to break the law they cannot send money off-shore to avoid tax payments on it.

A firm not wanting to break the law; what a new concept. Guess Romney has his money stashed in the Cayman's because it pays better interest.

We are a major world power, and yet we are whining to get someone to pay our way

Yes, the last big whine was heard from the banks and Wall Street wanting someone (the taxpayers) to pay their way out of trouble.

The point is, everyone is looking for an easy way to make a buck, whether it's legal or illegal, moral or immoral. Everyone.

                                    Hi Debi,

I fully agree with your last sentence. And this is exactly why the government should NEVER put into place laws and regulations which abet the immoral activity. But you are wildly wrong about why someone would place their money off-shore. You can't avoid the taxes on that money just because it sits in a Cayman Islands account. This is one of many fantastic (meaning mythical) claims made by leftists.

We should NEVER have bailed out any firms. Not AIG, or GM, or any Wall Street bank. We should not have manipulated the bankruptcy courts. But we also should never have put into place the laws which induced or enticed or incentivized the very behavior that caused the financial crisis. We've done nothing to fix this situation. CFPB can't fix it, and there are simple logical reasons to make this claim. Dodd-Frank has made it worse, FAR worse, and there are simple historical reasons to make this claim.

I don't know why leftists are intent on finding ways to regulate ourselves into nirvana despite agreeing at every turn that there is no way to do it. Just let the markets work. They are the most ruthless enforcer anyone could ever imagine anyhow.

The House Republicans have not done anything for 4 years. So this is no surprise for me. What is a surprise for me is the fact that they got 13% approval from the public. I would have expected a percentage more like ZERO. Their salaries should be cut in half with no benefits at all for their part time work just as it is for the rest of us working part-time. Also, isn't it about time to kick Mitch and John out to the cow pasture where they belong roaming among the rest of their lazy sheep? Send them a message in D.C. next Nov. by voting the Republicans out of the House. Then vote in those who are willing to work, compromise, and get along better with the Senate. We really need to get away from the party system because that is what is creating this lazy and obstructionists attitude along with getting nothing done. They spend more time on their Party agenda of destroying others rather than accomplishing the tasks for which they were sent to D.C. by their constituents. Talk about the buffoonish clowns 47%, these House JA are the 100% of today's Leech Society. Considering all the problems existing today, I don't think that it is too much to expect that they work everyday of week with a mandatory 8 hours a day. Also, cut back on the number by sending only one from each state rather than from each district. Just think of the savings for that alone. They are no different , or any better than we are. In fact, at times, the public acts more morally than the House with their lazy, name calling, attitude and behavior. The House appears not to have worked a single day in their lives just like the scheming Romney., If the public ran their businesses like the House, their doors would have been shut a long time ago. Now we need to demand the same quality of work from Congress by running off the lazy, worthless, argumentative sheep.

The media bias is alive and well, no stories about what Reid is doing, nope, gotta focus on Republicans. Both parties are pukes and the biggest pile of vomit comes from the lamestream and biased media. No wonder their numbers are in the tank and over 60% of Americans don't trust or believe the American media, it is a sham, a propaganda mouthpiece and no longer do we get real news or journalism, all we get is brainwashing disguised as news. Sick, fortunately there is an internet although if Obama gets his way that will disappear.

As to Obama, apparently his loyal supporters aren't anxious to do any investigation into his executive orders and the power grab that they create, a power grab that puts more and more power into his hands. Not one of his supporters seems cognizant of his administration's fight to allow the unconstitutional sections of NDAA (indefinite detention without counsel, trial etc) that were overturned by a federal judge to be re-instated. Obama got his way via another federal appeals judge so now he can arrest, detain and hide you away and no one will be able to find or help you. I am NOT making this up, Obama's police state is alive and well, open your eyes little sheep. Think you are immune?

Barack Hussein Obama has committed Crimes against Humanity by Supporting the Muslim Brotherhood:
The crime of apartheid is defined by the 2002 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court as inhumane acts of a character similar to other crimes against humanity "committed in the context of an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime."

On 30 November 1973, the United Nations General Assembly opened for signature and ratification the International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid.[1] It defined the crime of apartheid as "inhuman acts committed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining domination by one racial group of persons over any other racial group of persons and systematically oppressing them."
Article 7 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal C...
ourt defines crimes against humanity as:
The Muslims' Threats, Attacks, Murders, Terror on Christians, Jews, and Americans is Institutionalized Apartheid.

                                        Article 7 Crimes against humanity
1.For the purpose of this Statute, 'crime against humanity' means any of the following acts when committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack directed against any civilian population, with knowledge of the attack:
                                        a.Murder;

I have a message for all of the partisan jersey wearers. YOUR party's elected "representatives" stink. It's past time for a thorough House Cleaning, and that means BOTH sides of the aisle.

These clowns need to be held in contempt of our nation and the people they "represent" or, better yet, impeached for dereliction of duty !! Then again, given their past history, the nation might be better off from their doing nothing than if they actually try to accomplish something in the next few weeks !!

A vote for Obama is a vote for a criminal.

What Boehner and his band of followers just did, is criminal. Eight days of work in 3 months, and now a 7 week vacation to campaign in their districts. How can people not see what they are doing, how can you vote for these people with good conscious. Talk about entitlement, they are drawing FULL pay, for doing nothing.

Obama and the Senate Democrats led by Harry Reid have TERMINATED all power of the House of Representatives. Every Bill the House has sent to the Senate is KILLED by Obama and Harry Reid before it even comes up for a Vote on the Senate Floor.

Harry Reid has pledged to prevent any Bill from the House to be put up to a vote in the Senate. Obama and Reid then can blame the Republicans.

Obama had the complete House and Senate his first two years of Office and he PASSED NOTHING but ObamaHitler Care.

If you are then how does the government continue to run? How did we get trillions deeper in debt? How are we able to pay our armed forces?

                                          Well you get the picture.

One other little fact … budgets do not control spending, spending bills do!
Speaking of spending bills do you realize that the Republican controlled House passed spending bills that exceeded expected revenues by over a trillion dollars?

                                          CoCo,

Perhaps that is because the Senate has already passed their version of several of these bills, most notably the Farm Bill.

Also note that all those Spending Bills (12) … must originate in the House.

As usual - the Republicans in the House don't want to do their jobs - just more and more deflection. The bills they sent to the Senate have so much pork in them they aren't passable. And, they are sitting on President Obama's proposed jobs bill - again.

This group of Republicans have got to be shown the door 11/6/2012!

The House sent many bills to the Senate but Democrats led by Harry Reid refused to even let them be voted on by the Senate.

The Senate ran by Democrats is your problem. Get rid of all The Democrats and the USA will prosper again.

jimmyfox...THE PRESIDENT has not had one single Democrat or Republican vote for ANY of his budget bills. The Democratic Senate under Harry Reid has not even PROPOSED a budget in nearly 4 YEARS. They left for home BEFORE the House members. I agree that the Senate is the problem of holding up progress and we can blame the voters of Nevada for sending us Harry Reid in 2008 for another 6 YEARS!

Obama's famous words "The day I am inaugurated the Muslim hostility will cease". "Osan Bin Ladin is Dead." How do you think that set with the middle East? If I cannot turn this economy around in 3 years this will be a one term. Who has been campaiging for 3 years instead of trying to fix the economy.

                                          Barack Obama's Main Accomplishments:

Signed the National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) Bill into Law allowing any US citizen to Be Detained WITHOUT trial (A federal Court Blocked it in May because it Violates the Constitution, but Obama is now trying to get it UNBLOCKED!). He has Killed HUNDREDS of Innocent people (Including 3 American Citizens) in Pakistan and Yemen with Drone Strikes (He's Ordered even more drone strikes than Bush!). The rate of National Debt under George Bush was Around $60 Billion a Month. Under Obama, it's been $190 Billion a Month, so that would be Nearly $600 Per US Citizen (Thanks Obama!). If you say the word peanut around them they wou;ld think you was talking about their brain. Ps did you know the F6 key on your computer has little use as well to most computer users why not use this key to describe oneself as F6Zman just another way of saying worthless and of no use!!!!!

True story F6 has more brain than Mitt Rob-me, Lying Ryan , or the clown Gop Congress. Any surprise November will be a landslide for Obama. Many will ask if the states forgot to put Rob-me on the Ballot.

Pu-lease F6 give us all a break make like the GOP house and post a few times a year maybe this wa you would not look so stupid you nut-job

                                          Falon

F6Zman: You meant "Here are," not "Here is." Actually, in the president's first two years, he got healthcare passed--every president before him, beginning with Teddy Roosevelt, tried but failed.

The 111th Congress, the democratic Congress of 2009-2010, passed 386 laws and was the most productive Congress since the early 1960s under JFK. You can see this for yourself by Googling:

"A Summary of the Record of the 111th Congress (2009 - 2010) of the United States"

By your vitriol, I recognize racism at work. Our nation needs to lose that and support this President who is working despite the House, as best he can, for all of us--including you.

The Republicans, on the other hand, are out for you--you've got a "47%" target on your back, and they will remove everything you need from government. Sorry--that's how it is.

Thank you for that list. I'm sure it isn't all inclusive, and just think what could have been accomplished if almost 100% of the Republicans hadn't obstructed and wished for his failure as well as demise, the whole time. When they want the President to fail, they are wanting the country to fail. They should be charged with treason. They have signed a pledge to Grover Norquist, one of the most influential people in the United States, not elected to any office, and this pledge TAKES PRECEDENCE OVER THEIR OATH OF OFFICE TO THE UNITED STATES! Any oath that supercedes their oath of office should be unconstitutional and absolutely not allowed. That makes Grover the Emperor or Dictator, if you will. Why should this unelected person have so much influence over elected Representatives and Senators??????

The keep going to the Obama website to post the same list, over and over and note that nothing changes and we're still in the toilet as a country but those democrats will fix it this time. They couldn't bankrupt us fast enough, need more time and the republicans are doing what? Why, they're letting them get away with it. Frankly, I begin to feel like another poster, time to get rid of ALL of them and start over. Kinda like the farmer whose crops develop blight, only thing to do is plow them under and start from scratch. Hell, I think we could go to the pre-schoolers and find better politicians, at least they aren't corrupt and they're smarter than what is currently in 'office.'

f6zman this is more about the house then obama. my self i dont like obama, i dont like romney. i dont like that fact that the house closes shop when we are in such dire straights in our nation. that just shows the true lack of concern that they have for the average american citizen. like i said its time for us to exercise our constitutional right and remove them all from office and start fresh with us in charge the average citizen. that stands for both democrats and republicans.

Fire them all, they cant get anything done for this country - only care about themselves and their fat wallets! The rate of National Debt under George Bush was Around $60 Billion a Month. Under Obama, it's been $190 Billion a Month

                                          Another mathematically challenged poster!

                                          Bush - $6.2T over 96 months = $65B per month

                                          Obama - $4.1T over 48 months = $85B per month

Moshululie, the only ones you got wrong was items 1 through 90. Obama had nothing to do with most of those regulations, a lot of them are redundant and some are non existent.

JOBS, 23% unemployment in the USA and what has Obama done about JOBS? NOTHING

Obama has spent more money that all of the 43 Presidents before him. Does that register in your little brain?

Obama has put us on the Brink of Economic Disaster and downgraded the credit of the USA TWICE since he has been in office.

YOUR welfare, Food Stamps, SSI is going to run out in Feb 2013. NO MORE MONEY TO PAY YOU. NONE. NO MORE STUDENT LOANS, NO MORE, NO MORE MONEY......CAN YOU GET THAT THROUGH YOUR IDIOT BRAINS. OBAMA HAS BANKRUPT THE USA.

The House of Representatives are going to adjourn. Why? OBAMA HAS NEVER HAD A BUDGET. NO BUDGET. 100% of DEMOCRATS VOTED DOWN ALL THREE OF OBAMA'S BUDGETS. THE DEMOCRATS VOTED OBAMA DOWN.

YOU CAN'T PASS LEGISLATION WITHOUT MONEY. OBAMA HAS NOT HAD A BUDGET APPROVED SINCE HE TOOK OFFICE.

Item: 92 Ordered Marines guarding the Embassy in Cairo to surrender all their ammo and prohibited Marines from having ammo for their weapons while guarding the Embassy.

Item: 93 Obama Ignored all Intel warning of a Terror Attack on the USA Benghazi Consulate and failed to protect American lives and property

Item: 94 Obama Lied and created a cover up and a conspiracy to cover up the Official Details of the Terror Attack on the USA Benghazi Consulate that resulted in the Murder of Ambassador Stevens and Staff.

Item 95: Issued Policies to change the fighting in Afghanistan that has resulted in 70% of all deaths of our Brave Soldiers in Afghanistan.

To those who are unaware, the president does not make budgets he sets guidlines, congress sets #s and distribution of funds for everything.

THEY FAILED AND IT WAS NOT HARD FOR ANY OF THEM TO STOP THE PROCESS TO CAMPAIGN FOR THEIR JOBS WHILE ON THE CLOCK.

Any worker in America would be fired for taking so much time off in the private sector, but these so called representatives take as much time off as they want. 1) Is this theft of tax payer money ? 2) Did they work for the people more than 3 months this year ?

                                          1) I VOTE YES

One of the most effective tools the Republican/Tea party has to stymie responsible governing is to do absolutely nothing - a task at which Speaker Boehnor's House excels. To them doing nothing is a victory.

Their whole term of office has been a waste of money and time. They have accomplished nothing except to make $175,000 a year for doing nothing. They were supposed to be for jobs, but somehow along the way that idea got lost and now they have skipped out and are AWOL. When military members are AWOL I think they have to serve jail time (brig time.) They are a total disgrace. We will never get the country back together with this juvenile fighting and lines in the sand. They have succeeded in a lot of failure. Send 'em home and don't let the door hit them on the way out!

This whole thing is so sad, and these rich big-wigs have no concept of what it is like to be a senior, drawing on the Social Security you paid into, them wanting to take away your Medicare, stop Pell grants that enable poorer students to get an education and repay society and be contributing members - more than I can say for all those obstructionist Republicans/Teapartiers!. Many of them claim to be christian and God will have a rude awakening for them on their judgement day. They are rich hypocrites who would like to eliminate that 47% of the population that Romney spoke truthfully about when he wasn't scripted. Only problem is, that includes all active duty military and retired military (that the "patriotic" Republicans claim to support)! NOT! Ryan doesn't have a dime in his budget for veterans, and they never mentioned active duty or veterans at their convention. That 47% also included a bunch of millionaires who don't pay any taxes and somehow avoid tax evasion. There are other things included too, but that's a beginning. You can't run a country like a CEO (we tried that with GW Bush and he ran us just about off the biggest cliff ever), countries have other responsibilities to citizens that businesses do not have.

I think that The House refusing to do nothing and being the party of 'no' for the last two years should be considered treason. They obviously have made their decision based solely on party affiliation and not for the betterment of the country. And I think John Boehner has blown his horn so many times that we all know by now that he is no thing but hot air. I read and article today which says that if Obama wins in November that the war in the House regarding the Bush tax cuts will be over and that it will be a non-issue.

                                          well said.

There comes a time when ideology matters less than results. we have long passed that time and deserve results from the leaders we have elected.

look outside the D and R on the ballots. here in nebraska there are green party, libertarian, and a few other 3rd parties that appear on the ballot, and i'm a strong proponent of voting for them when the D/R candidates look the same to me. Hopefully you have that same choice in Montana...

As an independant, I must respectfully disagree that now is the time to vote out all incumbents. Given the TP disaster of 2010, and the following collapse of all courage in the Republican party, this election is the time to vote a straight Democratic ticket. The only thing that will give the Republicans courage to do what is best is fear of the American people. Vote all "D" this time. If I could make one exception to this it would be for that insider-trader Pelosi. But she's in a safe district, I doubt I will get my wish.

Quite often I have difficulty trying to write about the subject that we are discussing, but I believe that this is the first time that I can't find a solution to the problems that we have with a complete dis function of our government. They are grossly overpaid. They have no morals . They spend a disproportionate amount of their so called working time trying to find ways to compel their employers to pay more than the fair share of running of our government. They are the only employees who decide their wages and benefits, They have no one able to control their behaviour nor morals. We cannot even get them to do a less than fair days work for a grossly overpaid wage. The obvious solution is one that I can't endorse, therefore I am truly speechless.

I can not possibly agree with you more regarding the only possible solution to this impasse. I can not nor will not endorse the only solution that would accomplish eliminating this type of behavior from our government.

We will have to resort to the only solution left us by voting our conscience and disregarding the R or the D associated with the people who are suppose to be representing us. It is pathetic that even this last resort at the polls is being steered to where it is no longer effective, these radicals are becoming "untouchable". Civil war may be closer than we imagine, I just do not want to see that come to pass in my lifetime. The Tea Party is no solution, it is at best an expression of anger at how dysfunctional our government has become.

I would advocate locking these so called representatives in a hall where they are only allowed subsistence bread and water until they can come up with reasonable compromise and solutions that work in the interest of ALL the people, not their party, not their financial backers, not their religion nor their personal opinion. I would also pay them an hourly wage directly related to the number of hours they work...no salary, and no benefits unless they work full time twelve months of the year. I would allow them two weeks paid vacation after completing their first year of employment and their wages would be tied to the rates of inflation ONLY after they likewise tie the minimum wage to the rate of inflation. They would also be limited to a single six year term and be granted a three week vacation after their third year. I would limit their starting wage as that determined to be the average median income of all Americans nation wide.Their health benefits would switch to a cobra plan upon their release from service, none of those "lifetime benefits" on the taxpayer dime.

listoire: For now, I suggest following CoinFl's recommendation to vote a straight democratic ticket. Please, don't lose hope! We must all come together or change can't happen, but I believe we can and will be one nation again. Meanwhile, go online, find the issues that matter most right now--a constitutional amendment to erase Citizens United is a great place to start. That case is treasonous on several grounds (for later down the line) but we must be rid of it soon, because 1) it allows any corporation, including foreign ones, to secretly pour endless sums into election campaigns, so that the Koch brothers and Big Oil run our government instead of our elected officials, and 2) by making money "free speech" it invites all corporations to sue the government whenever they think a regulation or law will cut into their profits. It's truly obscene that one branch of our federal government has done that to the entire government.

If we don't go democratic now, we'll have three more treasonous, corporate conservatives on the Supreme Court, as 3 turn 80 during this next presidential term--and those appointments will affect us for the next half a century. (There's a host of other reasons, especially the "just say no" obstructionism of the House, which threatens all we hold dear.)

Then find other causes that make sense, sign petitions, volunteer; you might even become a community organizer! These are folks who knock on doors and connect people who need help--of any kind--to government agencies in charge of whatever it is that fits their needs.

Don't despair--let's roll up our shirtsleeves and get corporations out of our government that should be of, by, and for all of us--the people. (Just posting here and getting your thoughts across is a good start.) Good luck!

Then do what any responsible intelligent American should do this election. Use the write in box. We have many people who would love to change the status quo, and at risk of sounding like another political idiot, I would, against any better judgement, volunteer to turn this country around. What we need is a complete overhaul of our government, and it will take some really drastic action to accomplish what must be done if we want our grandchildren and their children to have a world (yes it is global, not local) that is fit to live, and thrive in. I am not the most intelligent chap out there, but one thing I can do well, is fix what is broken. We need a leader that comes from the low middle class, or lower. Someone who has fought tooth and nail for what little they have. Not another spoiled rich kid that had everything handed to him.

We may need a new constitution, the one we have now is so convoluted from its original intent, I am not sure it can be fixed without a lot of blood shed (civil war). We need to form our own government and take the country bit by bit until we, the people, once again are in control. How radical? Democratic Monarchy. We need STRICT term limits, one 6 year term period. no more career politicians. One 6 year term and the people vote again for their ruler. Yes there is a lot of argument against a monarchy, but give it a thought. No more arguing, things GET DONE. No more blame, you take full responsibility for your actions while in office, and when you get out...make sure you have done nothing to anger the masses because now you are one of them. No more pay/medical/protection for life. No more politicking in office, only work. No congress, only one person. Listen, they are less than 1 percent of our entire population and we are letting them run roughshod over us, simply because none of us have the backbone, determination, and sense of sacrifice for the better good of humanity. We all only care about ourselves, and THEY have made sure that is so.

Small change wont work, a new president wont work people, only a complete overhaul.

I will be YOUR servant to change.

There has to be compromise on both sides, but quitting and going home is not the answer. The country will only suffer as a result of these idiots that refuse to do their job....all of them. Boner can say whatever he wants about bills sitting in the senate....there has to be compromise with a divided congress. None of them have done their job.

Compromise is the essence of democracy. But we aren't a democracy anymore: Big Oil currently runs our national government. Follow the money!--the first thing we have to do is GET THE MONEY OUT.

I strongly disagree, however, where you say none have done the job; the 111th Congress of President Obama's first two years was the most productive since under JFK in the early 1960s. I left a Google reference somewhere above here for you to look at, if you like.

We need to vote a straight democratic ticket because:

                                          1) the President has several important jobs bills in the pipeline the Republicans won't vote on or pass that will get people back to work in better paying jobs, rebuild our infrastructure, and reintroduce returning vets to jobs back home,

                                          2) we really need to avoid another three corporate-minded conservatives on the Supreme Court, and three sitting justices will turn 80 during the next presidential term, and

                                          3) republicans have made clear they have no plan and are serving only the multi-billionaires who will have bought the election for them--if that occurs. We know 17 of Romney's advisors are the neocons who advised Bush. One had only to watch the Republican Convention's tribute to David Koch and see all those corporate banners to know they are no longer serving 'we the people,' but seek election solely to hide themselves in the deep pockets of corporate bribery.

Those eight days all took place this month, following the Republican and Democratic National Conventions."

Nothing done on the "fiscal cliff"! Nothing on Libya! Way to go Mr. Boehner, Mr.Cantor, etc! Lead by example!

At most, they only "work" 175 days a year in session. If you are someone like Hillary Clinton, in 2007 -2008, then you show up a lot less than that while "campaigning" - but still get paid!

They want to get paid $175K a year, and up, plus a lifetime pension after 4 years in the House! Plus perks! For NOTHING!

Who are the people with a "dependency" on the government, that don't want to work, Mr. Romney? Name the names!

I'd start with Boehner, Pelosi, Reid, McConnell, and Cantor!

                                          @Mike:

Since I have nothing else to do after my company declared bankruptcy in 2003, I have followed politics and the news. I understand your anger and frustration. We need to change the face of our congress and we need to to get rid of the tea party extreme right. As far as starting with Boehner, Polosi, Reid, McConnell and Cantor...Boehner is up for re-election and should not be re-elected. Pelosi is up for re-election and should be re-elected. Reid is not up this year. McConnell, unfortunately, is not up this year, Cantor on the other hand is up for re-election and should be defeated.

In fact we need to vote every GOP incumbent out of the House and Senate this November!

All the bashing of Obamacare ignores the fact implementing it was one of Obama's major campaign promises. Hard to fault a president for succeeding in implementing something he promised to do. A small majority of Americans are against this plan but knew when they voted for him that he'd try to implement it. Even though about 53% of Americans say they're against Obamacare the vast majority when asked about the individual parts think they're good. I believe most of those who oppose it do so because they believe the republican hype bashing it.

So, knowing that Congress is free loading off of our tax dollars, how do we go about getting a Constitutional Amendment passed that puts our "Legislators" *cough* on a time clock pay system.

I see Bernie Sanders, Collins (Sen ME.. i forget her first name...) and Joe Biden as examples of officials that we'd want to keep in office, regardless of how long they have been there. Those individuals are great legislators, and our republic would be worse for their absense if term limits forced them to leave...

TZ: Yes, term limits force out the (very few) who actually do a good job, but I'll accept that because it also forces the (vast majority) who quickly become too beholden to special interests soon after being elected, if not before. We need new blood and cleaner blood in these positions. It will also take a lot of the money out of the game because it won't be worth as much for special interests to buy a politician if the will only have a short run at helping the buyer.

Personally, I'm not planning to vote for a single incumbent this time unless doing that would force me to vote for a teabagger.

Term limits in California, for example, have resulted in nobody knowing what to do and nobody invested in doing ANYTHING 'cuz, after all, they'll be out in a few years, anyway. A horrible idea--look anywhere term limits are in effect and you'll see.

Term limits are nothing more than voters' excuse for not doing the research and figuring out who's good and who's bad. Get beyond the 30-second TV soundbites--no truth there--and dig deeper. READ. THEN VOTE.

Back in 2008 the "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent" (RNC) were given their poltical, economic, social, and cultural marching orders. This "Zombie Order" was handed down by "Mickey Moues Mitch McConnell." The only poltical goal for the GOP?RNC is to destroy an American President. So the GOP/RNC "Hoodlum's On The Hill" lead by "Richie Rich" Ryan, and not by "Bonehead Boehner." Now the "Bonehead Boehner Bunch" has gone out of their way to distract, obstruct, and destroy the policies of the President. Now the Tea Beggers in the "Do Nothing" GOP/RNC Congress have taken their orders seriously. They voted in 2010 to destroy Social Security, and the "Richie Rich" Ryan Economic/Tax Plan was passed in the "House of Hoodlum's." The GOP/RNC "Hoodlum's On The Hill" have taken a strong pledge to obey the Tax Pledge of "Goofy Grover." Where did their pledge go to the US Constitution, the Office Of The Presidency, and to the US Bill Of Rights? They sold their pledges, and their souls to the Koch Brothers. Does this sound like TREASON America!

Progressive=Forward 11: The Republicans who pledged never to raise taxes for Grover Norquist DID commit treason, as they all personally swear an oath to uphold the constitution for the welfare of the people. Calling a solution before a problem is posed directly violates congressional responsibility "to raise taxes for the general welfare of the people." Taxation is Congress' penultimate responsibility according to our Constitution. Promising anybody anything in writing on that score is a refusal to do the job=treason.

The problem with that is, Republicans actually want to eliminate authority of Congress to pass laws regulating interstate commerce--the authority assigned them in the Commerce Clause.

A close reading of Citizens United and Roberts' majority opinion in passing the Healthcare Act shows that the conservatives on the Supreme Court are dedicated to destroying the Commerce Clause to such a significant extent, they went far beyond their jurisdiction in the first to make money the equivalent of free speech within meaning of our Constitution's most sacrosanct heart, our First Amendment, to invite any corporation, foreign or domestic, to sue the federal government whenever a law or regulation threatens corporate profits, real or imagined. For one branch of government to invite lawsuits against another branch of government for doing its constitutionally assigned job is clearly TREASON.

Thus, Big Tobacco sued when the government voted to put graphic warning labels on cigarette packages--cigarettes being the only legally marketed product that kills when used as directed. Tobacco claimed those labels would damage their profit margins--and the Federal Third District Court had to follow the Supreme Court. Tobacco won. Just wait 'til government tries to protect our water tables from fracking, which uses carcinogenic benzene--or even tries to get fracking Big Oil to inform us as to what other chemicals they're pumping into our land! Wait until our government tries to reduce the particulate matter that's causing our kids to get asthma by the millions--did you see how many of our Olympic athletes have asthma?

But no, the Supreme Court has decided what matters most: corporate profiteering. Like politicians, they rake in far more money by privately investing in corporations than their salaries provide.

FOLLOW THE MONEY. WE HAVE TO TAKE THE MONEY OUT, EVERYWHERE IN GOVERNMENT. We should have a law requiring all government officials at a certain pay grade and above to refrain from any private corporate investments during their tenure in office. (We'd have to pay lifetime appointees to the Supreme Court a lot more, but they become corrupt when the money comes from any other source.)

                                          1) Money is not free speech! (overturn Citizens United)

                                          2) Fully taxpayer-funded elections.

                                          3) No private investments while in office.

                                          4) Any corporate funding for any purpose=felony bribery.

That's a start we absolutely must put together as one people, all in.

And this, Ladies and Gentlemen is exactly what is wrong with our government today. Its not Presidet Obama and his desire that Americans be educated, have healthcare and can retire without worrying about living on the streets. Its CONGRESS. Most specifically the HOUSE (Though the Senate and their stupid self-imposed rules that are found nowhere in the Constitution is not blameless). But I, as a voter, must admit too that I am also part of the problem. I keep returning my Representative and Senators to DC. I do so, because Patty Murray, Maria Cantwell and Jim McDermott espouse the values I do do and have been successful in representing my interests in DC. I certainly dont think anybody the Washington GOP would put up for election would be in alignment with my liberal philosophy.

SO, my dear friends accross this country, I implore you... VOTE DEMOCRAT this November, so our government can actually begin working FOR its people again instead of obstructing the people's business & taking countless vacations!

Why would anyone think one party is better than the other. President Obama if re-elected will cut military benefits that were promised to all who have served. Sorry, I have to vote for the other party and hope they don't screw the military like the President is going to in January.

This POTUS has expanded benefits and education for returning Gi's. Hell the GOP just failed to pass the GI jobs bill for returning Gi's Thanks to 5 Reflubicans-it should have passed but the GOBP filibustered and prevented it from coming to a vote in the Senate. I have yet to understand why military people would EVER vote for a Tea Party member who doesn't care about anything but the debt and then tank our credit rating "just for fun".

DC is the part of the problem DC was created to house the Government, and would not have a vote in elections. It should not have anyone living there, that would need to be repesented. Why does it have any congressional members, it is not a state? That is the problem with government it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Who pays for this free (not really, as there is not free anthing) schooling, healthcare, retirement? The constitution doesn't mention these rights. The property owners pay for k-12 schools, I had to pay for my college. Why now does the government have to pay for college? A person goes to school then to college to earn a higher wage, so they get a benifit from it. The rest get taxes for it, (no benifit). Healthcare is a responsibility of each one of us. We have to take responsibility for what we eat, and how we live our lives. Why should a person who eats healthy, does all the right healthy habits pay for some one who eats junk food, and doesn't take care of themselves? Why should someone who scrimps and saves for retirement also have to save money for someone who spend their money on gambling, and drugs? Years ago people took responsibility for thier families, and gave to charites. Now we want the Government to do all of that, we they can do it, but they are far more wasteful then you or I, because they don't have to live within a budget, they can say citizens I want more of your money, or I think I will print another billion today, causing our money to be worth less. Notice one thing, when the government prints stimulas money notice that the prices go up at the market soon after. That is because the dollar is worth less, which causes the prices to go up. Also notice your wages do not go up, so you can buy less. The minimum wage earners are hit the hardest with this, and they tend to be the ones supporting this policy. Wise Up and don't vote for Obama. He gives with one hand and his buddys all take from you with thier hands. One step forward, then 10 steps back.

The DOD story you are mis-reporting was a law requiring a voting assistance office be established on every foreign military base. No funding was included in this law, so the voting offices would have been staffed and funded by taking away from each base budget and manpower. The intent of the law was to supply information on how to vote, and had nothing to do with allowing military personnel to vote. The Pentagon felt that a better approach would have been to use social media and advertising to give the personnel voting information, and has therefore been slow in implementing this law.

Failure to fully implement this law does not prevent military voters from obtaining absentee ballots from their home states and voting as they always have before.

"House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) defended the schedule on Friday, citing the passage of Republican bills to extend all of the Bush-era tax cuts, and a bill to rework the automatic defense cuts, as examples of how Republicans are passing legislation that the Senate refuses to consider."

News Flash Boehner the Dems are not compromising on anything you want, because as soon as the election is over and the cuts go into play Jan 2, Jan 3rd All Obama has to do is throw his Budget on the table and as long as it has tax cuts and a debt reduction plan YOU HAVE TO VOTE YES its the law and all your holding out and not budging on anything is all for nada and the republicans don't get squat and if I was Obama I would shove it right down your throats.

                                                  Republicans for Obama

Because the GOP can't seam to put anyone worthy up there to vote for!

Sorry, I can't vote for a President who is going to cut military benefits in January. The President thinks you can compare those who are serving in uniform to those in the private sector. Mr. President the private sector does not get shot at or have to endure the hardships the military has to. The soldiers I have talked to are voting straight Republican. You can cut weapon systems but the military in uniform should receive the benefits they deserve because they do jobs that civilians can Not comprehend and are separated from their families for long periods of time.

military benefits? obama is not cutting military benefits. where did you get that from by the way. he is cutting bloat out of the defense budget like the f-22, cutting nuclear weapon devolopement and so forth. he is not cutting benefits for the military, if anything he wants to increase veteran benefits for the returning soldiers. you do realize he used to be on the senate commitee for veterans and has always pushed hard for our rights and benefits along side bernie sanders. i have always liked how he has treated us fellow veterans ( yes i am a vet). unlike the cuts that bush put into place while sending us to war. really man of steel if your going to bitch at least bitch about what is real!

Obama only has destain for our military. He fights thier right to vote, but want illegals to vote. He has not cut any waste from the budgets, but has only added to the waste. Look at all the green energy programs he funded only to go bankrupt. The man probably doesn't ballance his own checkbook. The F-22 is the only hi tech plan we have for the past 20 years. and he killed it. We cant even send a man in space anymore, for the first time in 50 years. Now we have to ask the Russians for prmission to go to the space station. Yet he spends money on TV add for food stamps, giving money to GM so the Unions will be happy, costing the taxpayers millions. Having the best equipment for our military has kept us free. Our troops should have the best of everything. They should use business practices for purchases, to cut costs there.

Just how has he got in the way of their right to vote? He has not! If you are talking about what Love2troops said several times … he is misinformed. It is up to each State to mail out the ballots on time, not the Federal Government.

The F-22 was built and is flying. The only thing cut was the unnecessary 2nd spare engine one spare engine per aircraft is plenty. The additional spare was just PORK for Eric Cantor and John Boehner to bring home. Many of these engines are made in UNION shops so he [Obama] cuts union jobs and the hawks pout.

Republicans killed a bill this week to aid soldiers transitioning back into civil life. The bill help vets ready themselves for the job market. Republicans killed another Jobs Bill. Boenher is full of BS. He is lying straight through his beer soaked teeth.

(AP) WASHINGTON - Senate Republicans blocked legislation Wednesday that would
have established a $1 billion jobs program putting veterans back to work tending
to the country's federal lands and bolstering local police and fire departments.

The Republican Party is not going to help the American people or veterans until the get to cater to the elite first. No gifts for the elite, then Republicans will kill every single bill until we go over the cliff. The are grandstanding on the American People's backs as if we do not matter or have worth. That includes you Republicans who post here and vote against yourselves.

Ryan Defends His ‘Yes’ Vote on Automatic Defense Cuts
                                                  By RACHEL L. SWARNS

WASHINGTON – Representative Paul D. Ryan, the Republican nominee for vice president, on Sunday defended his decision to support automatic cuts in defense spending as a way to force a deal on reducing the deficit, an approach that was sharply criticized by his running mate, Mitt Romney.

Mr. Ryan said that he backed the deal, which could result in an automatic 8 percent cut in defense spending in January, in an effort to compromise with Democrats on deficit reduction.

“I worked with President Obama to find common ground to get a down payment on deficit reduction,” Mr. Ryan said on the CBS News program “Face the Nation.” “It wasn’t a big down payment, but it was a step in the right direction.”

Meet the 40 Senate Republicans Who Betrayed Veterans By Killing $1 Billion in Jobs

                                                  By: Jason EasleySeptember 19th, 2012

Forty Republican members of the United States Senate betrayed veterans today when decided that denying President Obama a victory was more important than spending $1 billion to create jobs for vets.

The Veterans Job Corps Act of 2012 would have spent $1 billion over five years to put veterans to work tending to federal lands, and in the nation’s police and fire departments. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) based her plan of FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), but Republicans opposed the bill because they said there is no proof that it would work.

Republican Sen. Tom Coburn claimed that there is no evidence that jobs for vets will work, “What we have is a bill that’s brought to the floor that has good intentions behind but shows the absolute laziness of congress in terms of really digging things out. issued their duplication report on the job training programs for veterans, four of them do exactly the same thing. None of them have a metric. So we don’t know if they’re working, and we haven’t held a hearing to find out if they’re working. But what are we doing?”

It doesn’t matter to most Senate Republicans that the CCC put 2.5 million people to work. When confronted with an actual jobs program for America’s vets, including the 220,000 who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, the majority of Republicans claimed the plan, which was already offset, was too expensive.

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) claimed that the bill would have pushed the VA over its spending limits, and gave forty Republicans a reason to vote no on jobs for vets.

The good news is that five Senate Republicans didn’t join with their party. Sen. Scott Brown (MA), Dean Heller (NV) Lisa Murkowski (AK), and Maine’s Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe all voted with the Democrats, but in the end the bill fell two votes short of clearing the procedural hurdle, and died in the Senate.

Here are the 40 Republicans who voted to keep America’s veterans unemployed,

Let’s vote out these moochers who are handsomely paid by our taxes and receive the best health care benefits along with a great pension if they’ve served 6 or more years.

                                                  From the article above:

All told, lawmakers gathered for a grand total of eight legislative days since leaving for their annual summer break in early August. Those eight days all took place this month, following the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.

                                                  Eight days of work.

                                                  Ok here's a question?

Can we start paying these guys by the hour at like $10 an hour or something and make them have their own retirements like everyone else in this country?
                                                  Lets see here at $10/hr * (8hrs*8days)=$640ea.
Wow, lets see here, if we pay our morons in congress this way... we might actually convince them to fix the deficit.

A Musical Impulse: Exactly wrong! Paying Congress less would only have them running ever faster to climb deep into the pockets of Big Oil and Dirty Energy.

On the other hand, charging those Republicans with treason who refused to manage taxation by pledging to Grover Norquist? I think it would prove remarkably effective! Put a few in prison for the rest of their lives.

A tax payer Class Action Suit should be filed in Federal Court next week demanding the return to the Treasury of all pay and benefits for all days missed in 2010, 2011 and 2012. This one time I would rather a law firm take a share than these losers.

Ummm.... I hate conservative republicans but ahhh, they're right on voting against that. Where is the 1 billion suppose to come from?

We need to CUT, across the board, nothing is off the table. Everyone is so comfortable with decades of overspending people are going to look like asses when it's time to cut. I might also add that defense is the absolute easiest to cut from. We spend more than the next 23 nations combined, 4 times the next closest country.

The Vets who served aready get most of these programs. You said it was paid for, How? By printing more money, incrasing the Debt more? I commend those members, that rejected the bill, because it only helps them for a short time, just like the Last Obama jobs bill.

                                                      300,

It is paid for by taking money from other existing programs.

The term of a bill is determined by Congress not the President unless the President wrote the bill ... He did not

Because the Congress only wrote a short term bill should our vets do without altogether? Wouldn’t short term help/support be better than nothing? Congress can always reauthorize the bill before it expires … can’t they??

These morons deserve to be kicked out of office for their lack of representation. Also, seniors are being hoodwinked by AARP on their support for Obama care. I would not join this left wing liberal organization if they paid me! They are another BS liberal institution who continue to rip off seniors and retirees! Pull your membership from this useless organization!! They continue to make billions off the backs of seniors!!

Hey uhh dude? The Republicans are in control of the house right now, so therefore the Republicans are the ones who are telling congress to take paid vacation. So, if you are going to make accusations make them correctly.

Also, AARP is NOT a liberal group. It is simply an the largest interest group in the country representing the overtly centrist views of Seniors. People join interest groups because they have more influence as a group than as individuals. So the who they make millions thing is a lie. It is money earmarked for use to influence politicians.

So Rick, before you keep drinking that mixture of tea and Kool-Aid you've been drinking, why not give it up and try vodka? I figure you'll probably need it after realizing the Republican Party has been screwing you for years.

The road service alone iis invaluable, not to mention access to supplemental health insurance and many discounts available to members. You should obtain some information on any subject if you're gong to try to impress others as some type of authority. Unless, of course, you're just trying to scare people into voting against their own interests and in favor of Republican candidates, which is more likely what you intended.

BS Rick! Who represents the Seniors if not the AARP? We only have a voice as a group to fight the damn Corporate lobbyists who want to strip our benefits we've paid for and earned. Ryan is the plague on seniors and he'll drag MITT who couldn't make a decision on anything without asking what his position should be right along down the GOP sewer. Seniors who have always voted R all their life will vote Dem for the first time this year because we may be old but not stupid!

The house voted on all the bills aready, to extend the Bush tax cuts to everyone, and the others, and sent them to the Senate, where they sit in a pile of others waiting to be voted on. What do they want the House to do, vote on the same bills again? Send duplicate bills to the Senate? If your job is done, you can leave. The Senate needs to get voting on the mountian of bills on their side. To bad the article didn't mention the Senate side. But of course they are supporting Obama and don't want any of the bills to come to a vote so that the tax cliff will give Obama billions of new tax dollars. Just wait until next year, you will hear the middle class scream when they see thier taxes to up another two thousand dollars, and say "Obama said my taxes will not go up one dime", well he was right they didn't go up one dime, they went up 20,000 dimes. The Poor's taxes will go up too, as well as the richest ones. Of course they will have the tax loophole to cut theirs down. AARP sold out to ObamaCare for a million dollars, just so that they could sell their insureance to seniors. The AARP is out for themselves, not seniors, as they look apon as a cash cow, just to be milked.
