Ryan gets boos at AARP conference

NEW ORLEANS -- Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan received boos as he addressed the AARP convention here on Friday -- perhaps his most unfriendly welcome on the 2012 campaign trail.

Several members of the “Life@50+” Annual Convention crowd booed loudly as Ryan began remarks proclaiming, “Seniors are threatened by Obamacare.”

“The first step to a stronger Medicare is to repeal Obamacare, because it represents the worst of both worlds,” Ryan went on as members continued to shout. “It weakens Medicare for today’s seniors and puts it at risk for the next generation. First, it funnels $716 billion out of Medicare to pay for a new entitlement we didn’t even ask for. Second, it puts 15 unelected bureaucrats in charge of Medicare’s future.”

Throughout the Wisconsin congressman’s nearly 30-minute speech, he rarely received applause and instead heard people yell “You lie!” and “No!” to many of his claims of what he and his running mate, Mitt Romney, would do if they make it to the White House.

Bill Haber / AP

Republican vice presidential candidate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., appears at the AARP convention in Friday, Sept. 21, 2012.

Recommended: Obama's battleground advantage grows

The last time Ryan came close to getting this kind of a reception from a crowd was during his very first solo campaign event -- on Aug. 13 -- when he spoke at the Iowa State Fair.

Ryan's speech came immediately after President Barack Obama spoke -- via satellite -- to the same AARP convention, knocking the Romney-Ryan plan to overhaul Medicare.

“I don’t consider this approach bold or particularly courageous,” Obama said, per the Washington Post. “I just think it’s a bad idea. No American should spend their golden years at the mercy of insurance companies.”

The Romney-Ryan plan would transform Medicare by giving future seniors a payment -- Democrats call it a "voucher," Republicans call it "premium support" -- to purchase private insurance or to gain access to traditional Medicare.

Yet Ryan countered by giving one of his most in-depth descriptions of the GOP's plans to change Medicare, and he did it as he was joined by his 78-year old mother, Betty, at the conference.

“In order to save Medicare for future generations, we propose putting 50 million seniors, not 15 unaccountable bureaucrats, in charge of their own health-care decisions,” he said, drawing some of the only applause of the speech.

ROFL. hearing people yell "You lie" after that state of the union address just makes me giggle like a schoolgirl... Props to the AARP members who didn't stand for the lies he spewed!

Paul Ryan's mother should drag him by the ear into the nearest bathroom and have him sit there with a bar of soap in his mouth for all of the lies he is telling.

My mother is also in her 70's and as a child growing up in the 60's I, like the character in "A Christmas Story" had my mother put soap in my mouth if I used foul language or if I told a lie. Lying was the worst you could do, because once you lose the trust of someone, you never really get it back.

The Republican Party has lost the trust of the American people, why would anyone vote for them ?

Either the Romney/Ryan ticket is masochistic or just plain stupid. They keep showing up at places they aren't welcome. That's not bravado either, it's bad campaigning.

Of course he didn't. The AARP stands to make millions from the changes in Medicare. They are already offering supplementary plans to cover seniors when providers will not accept the compensation offered by Medicare. Wonderful sleight of hand there by the President. We will legislate benefits just not pay to provide them.

AARP likes to bill itself as a non-partisan group looking out for the interests of older Americans, but in reality it’s only non-partisan in the sense that it supports both parties attempts to expand the role of government.

To prove its non-partisan chops, AARP will often point to its support for the Bush administration’s Medicare prescription drug legislation. But that law was a tremendous boost to its insurance business. In 2002, the year before the passage of the law, AARP’s insurance royalty revenue was $240 million, according to the report. But by 2009, this revenue had nearly tripled, to $657 million, while growth of other parts of the organization remained relatively flat.

The group stands to receive a further windfall from the passage of last year’s national health care law. Though not an insurer itself, insurers pay AARP royalties for putting its stamp of approval on their products. As a result of the hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicare Advantage under ObamaCare, many seniors will choose to purchase supplemental, or Medigap, insurance polices -- and AARP happens to control 34 percent of that market.

Using different assumptions for the number of seniors who will convert to Medigap policies, the report estimated that AARP could stand to gain anywhere from a low of $55 million to a high of $166 million by 2014, once ObamaCare is fully implemented, based on their current market share.

sirie,

Gallup may be tied on their National poll but Presidents are NOT elected by popular votes they are elected with electoral votes. Presidents can be, have been elected with fewer popular votes than their opponent.

In strict mathematical terms a president can receive enough electoral votes to become president while only achieving just over 25% of the popular vote.

RCP (Average of polls) as of 9/20/2012 After Conventions, before 1st Debate
Wisconsin just moved from Tossup to Lean Obama (sorry Ryan)
8 Tossup States: Tied in zero, Obama leads in 7, Romney leads in 1.
Delegates: Obama = Solid(142)+Likely(37)+Lean(68) = 247 +Tossup(85) = 332
Delegates: Romney = Solid(76)+Likely(74)+Lean(41) = 191 +Tossup(15) = 206
Total Delegates: [332+206 = 538] Win = 270

What kind of mother stands by and watches her son tell outright lies about plant closings in his own district? What kind of mother would want to see school lunch programs, food stamps, and subsistence programs denied to children? Brian1956, since you asked:

“The first step to a stronger Medicare is to repeal Obamacare, because it represents the worst of both worlds,” Ryan went on as members continued to shout. “It weakens Medicare for today’s seniors and puts it at risk for the next generation. First, it funnels $716 billion out of Medicare to pay for a new entitlement we didn’t even ask for. Second, it puts 15 unelected bureaucrats in charge of Medicare’s future.”

According to Factcheck.org: Ryan repeated the same lie during the convention, where Ryan

Accused President Obama’s health care law of funneling money away from Medicare “at the expense of the elderly.” In fact, Medicare’s chief actuary says the law “substantially improves” the system’s finances, and Ryan himself has embraced the same savings.

Further: Ryan accused Obama of doing “exactly nothing” about recommendations from a bipartisan presidential commission to reduce the deficit. But Ryan himself was among a minority of commission members whose opposition scuttled the plan and prevented it from being sent automatically to Congress for action.

And RYAN now has the brass to blame President Obama for the looming cuts to defense required in the sequesture, when RYAN voted for the legislation which required the sequesture.

When Standard & Poors downgraded the US credit rating, it was the inability of the Congress to act which they cited as the reason for the downgrade. The downgrade did not happen while the Democrats controlled the Congress, but only after the Republicans failure to act (in full compliance with their number one priority of making President Obama a one term president) that the country received the first down grade of its credit, ever. And Paul Ryan was on the committee that failed to act !!!

Actually Sirie, many of us do admit making mistakes. That is one of the most effective ways human beings learn. Most of us, however, don't go make the same one again. Conservatives, on the other hand, seem programmed to do so. Take for example the strategy being proposed by your party. Cut taxes for the upper income folks, deregulate Wall Street, increase Defense spending and (for good measure) let's start one or two more wars in the Middle East. In other words, let's have a third George W. Bush term. Experience is what teaches you to recognize a mistake the second time you make it, unless you're a conservative; you just ignore it and hope for a different outcome.

It's no wonder the seniors are upset, they are worried about what is going to happen. Ryan is telling them the truths they don't want to hear. He is telling all of us that tough decisions have to be made. Liberals just want to keep their heads in the sand and pretend everything is great. Liberal politicians just want all of us to keep drinking the kool-aid to keep them in office. We are very close to becoming Greece and no amount of screaming is going to stop our fall, if we don't fix things now.

How was it that he was able to basically ignore the events for about 10 hours after our Ambassador was dragged nude and dead through the streets of Libya AND then SODOMIZED, while supposedly "campaigning" and "sleeping" in Las Vegas? I know what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but it seems with Obama whatever happens bad to him stays hidden by the liberal media! Rick --

How is it that President Obama can find time this week to go on Letterman and "The View" and party with Beyonce and Jay Z, and play golf 2-3 times... but not find time in 4 years to meet with the Prime Minister of Israel?

I don't know where conservatives come up with this stuff, but this is patently false.

In particular, I remember a meeting they had where they disagreed on something while sitting in front of the fireplace in the Oval office, and then went back behind closed doors, and came out at least in somewhat of an agreement. There was also a dust-up about the President excusing himself from a meeting with Netanyahu to have dinner with his family.

I think this is that same meeting, back in 2010. It may have ended tensely, but it certain occurred, and it was not the first time they had met.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/07/06/president-obamas-meeting-with-prime-minister-netanyahu-gaza-iran-nuclear-weapons-pea

The President welcomed Prime Minister Netanyahu today for some intensive work – a one-on-one meeting and a working lunch. Between the two, both men addressed the press briefly from the Oval Office. Both exchanged kind words for each other, and pledged unequivocally to “work together in the coming months and years to protect our common interests, our countries, our peoples, against new threats,” as the Prime Minister put it. He added that "the President said it best in his speech in Cairo. He said in front of the entire Islamic world, he said, the bond between Israel and the United States is unbreakable. And I can affirm that to you today."

I chose this link because there's video and photographs to go with the text, just in case you doubt it.

As for the current situation --

http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/white-house-declines-netanyahu-request-to-meet-with-obama.premium-1.464328

... underscored by the fact that this is the first time Netanyahu will visit the U.S. as prime minister without meeting the president.

(emphasis added)

This convention was stacked with AARP employees and Insurance company affialiates. They are full of crap. AARP backed Obamacare because they are basically a front for insurance companies and don't want real health care reform to force the insurance companies to cover those with pre-existing conditions. Many members gave up thier membership because of backing Obamacare so stacking an meeting and booing Ryan in support of Obamacare will only cost them more members.

Don't forget probably in preparation for this kind of sneak attack Obama wrote himself an executive order forbidding any demonstration near a person protected by the secret service, no doubt meaning himself. What a set up turkey.

Rick, That Death panel you talk about it what Insurance company's have been doing for years, when they stop paying for benefits that people have paid for. Just like a Rep. accuse the other side of doing just what you have been doing.

I think it was Brian that asked what lies Ryan told. That $716 billion he said Obama took from Medicare to pay for Obama care. Well as it turns out that is the exact amount that Ryan's plan had in it to take out of Medicare. And that money was to be saved from fraud and over payments to Med. company's and Dr. and Hospitals. But that is the same as taking money that Bush gave these same people in over payments, so you can see why Romney and Ryan are fighting that. Dam can't take money from rich people that they never earned now can we, that isn't the Rep. thing to do.

My hope that in this election, the voice of the people will be heard over the voice of Corporate people.

The very serious things that the President wanted to addresses was gridlocked every time. Don't blame the President, blame his GOP Congress for killing bills that would've put people to work on infrastructure programs like light rail in Wisconsin and many others.

These past 4 years will give us another 4 years of young voters. 2008 was bad enough for the Dark Side, think how happy they will be in 2012 when money won't by them the election they are so desperate to win at all costs.

And in these past 4 years, a lot of bigots went to their reward and won't be voting. There is a lot to be happy about being in the 47%.

Our future is our young people, this is who this fight is about. This is the start of the beginning of their lives and the governmental conditions they will have to live under, their life in America.

No matter how the GOP tries to prevent Americans from going to the polls by they hysterical ranting about voter fraud, it comes down to this- we don't want Willard or his big money pals ruining the youngsters chance at the American Dream.

sirie, I don't normally call people out, but I don't believe you ever voted for Obama. You're a plant. No, you're a weed.

BTW, just the other day, I was watching "Being with JFK" (you can see it on youtube). In episode 4, he takes the podium and then takes full responsibility for the Bay of Pigs operation, even though it was planned in the later stages of the Eisenhower administration. Obama, Clinton, Carter, all have admitted when they made mistakes. I don't recall ever hearing Reagan or Dubya admit they messed up. Maybe someone can point out an example.

of one of their favorite decagenarians, C. Montgomery Burns. Yeah, that's it.

Ryan: Well, they'll be dead and I'll be living in Wisconsin, so there.

mooonie - I guess my question to you is - what will change if Obama is given a second chance? I don't believe that he will regain the house, he may get the senate, but really if they are gridlocked now, not much is going to change...

You might come back with "well, the congress will see that America is backing Obama, however I don't really think that congress gives two sh_ts about anything but making their wallets fat.

The Romney/Ryan plan affects NOBODY currently 55 years old or older. So these AARP people have been misled by the Obama administration and liberal media. And those UNDER 55 years old (like me) will be able to CHOOSE if they want the current plan or a voucher system. The key word there is CHOICE!!

Amazing how liberals continually talk about the importance of CHOICE like gay marriage, abortion, etc. but the minute I want a CHOICE of whether I want to be involved in a bankrupt Medicare system or not I am told I can't. I though you were for choice? I thought people had the "right to choose"? Then why can't I have that RIGHT when I turn 65 years old?

You see liberals LOVE Choice - unless it is gun ownership, prayer in school, stay at home parents, what kind of health insurance I want, or whether I can choose to be in a bankrupt Medicare system. Why can't liberals at least argue their position on FACTS!! What Romney/Ryan propose has ZERO affect to anybody 55 years old or older. Do liberals believe in "Choice" or not?

Of course he didn't. The AARP stands to make millions from the changes in Medicare. They are already offering supplementary plans to cover seniors when providers will not accept the compensation offered by Medicare. Wonderful sleight of hand there by the President. We will legislate benefits just not pay to provide them.

      wow. Talk about clueless.

They neither sell a product nor make any money from any products being sold. That includes no moneys earned from healthcare, medicare, insruance or obamacare.

In order to save Medicare for future generations, we propose putting 50 million seniors, not 15 unaccountable bureaucrats, in charge of their own health-care decisions.

What he really means is that he wants seniors to be at the mercy of unaccountable insurance company bureaucrats, who get bonuses for figuring out clever ways to deny coverage to people.

Wow. You are clearly confused. AARP DOES NOT SELL ANY INSURANCE. AARP ALLOWS OTHER COMPANIES TO USE THE NAME AARP TO SELL INSURANCE PRODUCTS. 'Affiliation' is not WE SELL THE PRODUCT.

Do you think that the Kohmen breast cancer foundation sells the items that come with a pink bow on the package? NO - I'm sure you don't. They have the same kind of arraignment that AARP has with insurance providers. Companies pay flat fees to them to be allowed to use the name on thier advertising. That's the total of the 'association' or 'affiliation'. They neither endorse or support the product being sold - go look at the fine print on ANYTHING being sold with the AARP name on it.

AARP does not sell insurance, but receives royalties for the use of its name and mailing list from insurance companies, primarily United HealthCare. Between 1999 and 2008, AARP royalties – not all from insurance – more than tripled, from $200.1 million to $652.7 million, royalties constitute nearly one-half of all AARP revenues, and well over twice membership fees. – Spokesman-Review 2011

            http://www.aarphealthcare.com/understanding-health-products/medicare-supplement.html

A Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan, such as an AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan insured by UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company, may help pay some of the health care costs that Medicare Parts A and B don't cover like copayments, coinsurance and deductibles for Medicare approved services. Your coverage travels with you throughout the U.S. and there are virtually no claim forms to file. Medicare Supplement Insurance plans also let you keep your own doctors and specialists who accept Medicare patients - and you never need to get a referral!

Now if the Administration is cutting the payments to Medicare A, but not the benefits, how do you think the providers will make up the difference?

The Romney/Ryan plan affects NOBODY currently 55 years old or older. So these AARP people have been misled by the Obama administration and liberal media.

This is patently false. The Romney/Ryan plan eliminates Obamacare, which means that --

Current seniors would also have to pay more for preventive, hospital, and physician services should Romney and Ryan repeal the Affordable Care Act, facing an increase in health spending of between $7,900 and $18,600 over the course of their retirement.

            (emphasis added)

            http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/08/24/739271/seniors-will-pay-60000-more-for-medicare-under-romneyryans-plan-report-finds/

To be more specific, CURRENT seniors --

will face higher cost sharing and premiums (particularly for preventive services) and seniors who have received prescription drug discounts, will now pay more for their medications. What’s more, Romney/Ryan would lower Medicaid spending significantly beginning next year, shifting federal spending to states and beneficiaries, and increasing costs for the 9 million Medicare recipients who are dependent on Medicaid.

            http://thinkprogress.org/election/2012/08/24/739271/seniors-will-pay-60000-more-for-medicare-under-romneyryans-plan-report-finds/

If you think that Medicaid has nothing to do with it, think again. Medicaid is what pays for CURRENT seniors' nursing home care. The proposed cuts to Medicaid will thus hurt CURRENT seniors.

YOU, and others who drink the right-wing koolaid, are obviously the ones who has been misled.

They don't want you to know but they have a FOR PROFIT DTVISION which makes Millions of Dollars off the Seniors they represent.

The keep the Dues paying Seniors in a seperate company than the Company that sells all the Senior products for profit. THE DON'T KEEP THE AAPR NAME SEPERATE. They use the same symbols and advertising for AARP even though they have two seperate Companies.

Ever wonder why AARP supported the Bush Medicare D plan. Big bucks for AARP for profit company. AARP sells many things as Licenses to Insurance companies.

One man's excess reimbursement becomes another's free time. This is another area of Obamcare that got too cute for its own good. So lets imagine the scenario, a hospital will not take Medicare because the compensation rate is too low. But, it cannot refuse an emergency room admission. Low and behold we are back to the cost shifting that occurs with the uninsured, only this time there are millions of new seniors rolling up to their doors..

You don't want to admit it but Obamcare will have the same net effect as Ryan's plan. A system that does cover everything, and the senior having to take out supplementary insurance to cover the gaps, because there is not enough money.

Who's going to pay for seniors who need nursing home care if Obamacare is repealed?

No one. And no one is going to be able to pay for all these promises that Obamcare made. Already the CLASS act is in the dustbin. The high-risk pool for pre-existing conditions is out of cash with only 25% of the expected population in the program. I'll lay odds that companies of under 100 employees will simply stop offering insurance and pay the fines. Individuals will not get insurance in the first couple of years as its cheaper to pay the tax. The states that have not set up exchanges are forcing the federal government to set them up, and they are already 6 to 8 month behind. The whole program will collapse under its own weight, but I predict Insurance companies will still be very profitable. BTW, did you notice that they are all for kids under 26 staying on their parents policy? That's because its turned into a very profitable business for them. One of the many unintended consequences so far.

Many conservative groups along with Fox News has challenged their status, and have asked for investigations into the business workings of the AARP.

While one may believe that the AARP doesn't fulfill the IRS requirements for non-profit consideration, the fact that they have that status does not go away.

The simple answer to the question; "Is the AARP recognized as being non-profit by the IRS?" is YES!

            Alan, NJ........

Unfortunately (for you), a LOT of seniors are no longer buying your propaganda.

You see....folks have had time to think about ObamaCare and realized, among other things, that requiring deadbeats to purchase health insurance rather than pushing their medical expenses off on those who do is a pretty darn good idea. Apparently, even Romney, thinks, thought, or will think so as well.

I will tell you what, being a buisnessman, if you don't have the right person in a management job, you give them time to learn. However, if you don't see improvement, even IF it is because they are unable to get a group to follow and compromise, you GET RID of the MANAGER.

Nuff said... I made a mistake of voting for Obama, won't do that again. I wish we could get all incumbants out of Wash DC, only way is with a revolution at this point...

This is probably the biggest problem in your mental make up. The government is not a business, it is not supposed to be a business, and to run it like a business is the dumbest thing a country can do.

Beyond that, you have seen plenty of improvement with what Obama has done. Simply because it does not fit your selfish desires doesn't mean that it isn't improvement.

THe Obama campaign is so desperate they are sending their people around to all places where Ryan and Romney are speaking to hackle and shout lies. Don't be fooled, remember ACORN. Remember in November VOTE VOTE VOTE them out of our Whitehouse. Read the proposed legislation not lies by political hacks.

Come on Shaky...you can do better than that. So now senior citizens are plants from ACORN or the New Black Panthers maybe? The problem is that they are part of the 47% and they don't appreciate the Republican attitude toward them.

The problem with your posts is that you look at our American Government as a business and the idea of making a profit. ( Maybe a little greed thrown in for good measure!) Government is to offer a service to the people. I guess you can't see that?

It's impossible for me to understand how you nimrods can excoriate AARP simply because Ryan and his plan work against the interests of the senior community. AARP isn't pro-Obama or anti-Romney; they work for the benefit of seniors and to that end they are not supporting Romney-Ryan and their policies.

AARP is making money as a clearing house for insurance agencies. Note who they promote? It also stands to make one billion in profits from Obamacare over the next ten years. Also, when Obamacare first came out AARP was against it, then, after a few 'closed door' sessions, they suddenly were all in favor of it. AARP has become an extension of the democrat party ala ACORN and the unions. Hell, it is a union when you examine what it does. I have been getting their propaganda for years now, sorry, I don't want any political party pushing group aiming to get their hand in my back pocket and...as some more astute posters have pointed out, Medicare, Social Security et al are heading towards insolvency.

Even funnier to see Obama's steamrolling Romney in the election!

Sailcat, I hardly see a statistical tie a "steamrolling." Keep in mind that these pollsters are weighing the polls to 2008 demographics when there were alot more people buying the recycled "Hope and Change" idea. So, they are expecting a repeat record turnout of the african american vote, but unemployment figures for that demo are quite high. You really think that someone who has been out of work for the last few years will be enthusiastic to vote for "more of the same-O"?

Ryan is just being honest with the AARP members. Keep in mind that anyone who is approaching retirement will not be effected by any changes. The changes will only effect those who are younger.

There has to be some reform of the system or it will totally collapse....just like Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac did. We all know how that turned out don't we?

Again, the middle east is burning and all the Obama administration is doing is throwing our tax dollars at them and asking that they play nice....

I also see that you are following the liberal playbook and violating NV COH by throwing insults at other posters. I hope you do realize that makes you look very small.

The link I posted was corrupted. Go to the House Ways and Means site, the Committee on Ways and Means and type in: Congressional Report Details AARP's Financial Gains from Healthcare Law. It will be an interesting read. Seems AARP is making beaucoup monies, lots of monies and there are questions about its 'non profit' status. Then, look at what AARP does, how it makes its money and who and what it promotes. It does indeed stand to make a billion dollars as a result of Obamacare, sorry to burst your bubble. Note as well that there are other sites which state the same thing.

The group is biased and biased for Obamacare.

Wrong. The group operates in the interests of seniors and the Ryan plan is not good for seniors. Period. The AARP has endorsed GOP candidates in the past when they thought it was in the best interest of their members. You are simply reaching desperately for an imaginary reason why the nation's largest advocacy group for senior citizens would choose not to support your party's hateful policies.

It appears that many people who are posting have not even attempted to read this Obama health care law. If you had you certainly would not be for Obama and saying that the AARP represents seniors! The few seniors that they are still able to brainwash are the ones being screwed!

It already cost seniors much more for medical care due to Obama' raid on it! 700 billion and counting! They pay more across the board for all medical expenses! If you would read this bill you would find that is does indeed ration health care. If you bothered to read it you would also find that at a certain age neither you nor your family would be making your health care decisions! A government committee would due that for you! And least we forget, the bill gives government the right to go into any and all of your bank accounts and do whatever they want!

As for booing Ryan, anyone can seed a crowed. The only deference is that if you boo Obama the secret service in at your door accusing you of racial hatred!

According to the polls Obama is ahead, but no one I know is going to vote for him! Maybe there is something going on with the polling!

            So let's summarize this.

AARP has the best interest of seniors at heart?-No!

Health care will be rationed?-Yes !

Your health care decisions will be made by a government committee-yes!

            Obama is a liar?-Yes!

            The Liberals are sreaming?- Yesssss!

Even a blind squirrel will find an acorn once in a while.

The core problem is rising costs from health care providers. If you have a problem the first thing you do is an objective analysis of the situation to find the root cause(s) and then you can design a fix for those problems. ACA did nothing of the sort so the foundation of the band-aid fixes applied by ACA is completely flawed. As a complete package ACA is horrendous and in the long run does nothing to address the core issues driving rising health care costs.

I am a senior. I don’t really care whether you think I care or not. I am smart enough to recognize a bad law when I see one though.

Ryan is an arrogant pompous individual............and bringing his Mom on stage with him is just weak.........like Mommy vouching for her lying hypocritical thieving son who has been one of the major obstructionists in the nations recovery would help...............like Anne Romney saying how she knows Mitt is such a good guy out one side of her face and then putting her foot down at revealing any more tax returns because we are all so mean to them out the other---running for the highest office in our nation requires some serious vetting....so what do the Romneys have to hide...heck they made Ryan cough up 10 years of returns when they vetted him---................

using these two women as tools in this campaign the way they have is a sign of weakness.............republicans are whinners and they really are uncomfortable outside of their comfort zone where the audience only cheers and claps and slathers over every incoherent and insubstantial utterance that leaves their mouths.

Ryan really looks pissed in the photo..........and that is NOT the way to reach out to the 47%..........these republicans have really thin skin.........another sign of weakness.

what we need now is the continued strength that President Obama has exhibited and continues to be stronger at as time goes by.............President Obama looks out for Americans, he has reestablished our standing in the global community and is instituting a plan that reaches far into the future for the stability of the US............he is fighting for not just the baby boomer and next generation but for the generationS to come.........the republicans do not do any of these things.......

Glad I belong to the AARP. One thing Romney, Ryan, and the GOP need to remember - most of us think insurance companies in general and more specific health insurance companies and their ceo's are evil and greedy. They are the folks who have controlled your health care and treatment by your doctor for years, pretending to approve treatment at pre-approval, then rejecting payment. Sorry Ryan, we are all onto your dirty tricks and know of your support for the insurance company ceo's and your lack of support for seniors.

How is it that President Obama can find time this week to go on Letterman and "The View" and party with Beyonce and Jay Z, and play golf 2-3 times... but not find time in 4 years to meet with the Prime Minister of Israel? How was it that he was able to basically ignore the events for about 10 hours after our Ambassador was dragged nude and dead through the streets of Libya AND then SODOMIZED, while supposedly "campaigning" and "sleeping" in Las Vegas? I know what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but it seems with Obama whatever happens bad to him stays hidden by the liberal media! One can only presume that Obama was with a high priced hooker the other night in Vegas when that 3 AM phone call came in to confirm that our Ambassador was dead? (I HOPE she was worth the life of 4 great Americans!) Funny, isn't that EXACTLY what Hillary Clinton warned us about regarding Barack Hussein Obama? When that 3 AM phone call came in, he didn't even bother to answer it! And worse yet, he also skipped the national security briefing the next day! (Likely why he had NO idea that Egypt was our ally! LOL)

(except for that one time two empty republican suits stood in front of a TV camera shortly after Obama's inauguration and told all of America, "Our main priority for the next 4 years is to make sure Obama is a one term president!" No truer words have been spoken by any of them since.) And it seems to me no one is doing a job of selling this fact to American voters better than Romney and Ryan themselves! They think we're stupid out here.....but they shamefully, and I think fataly underestimate the intelligence of a hell of lot more than just 47 percent of us.

Rick - repeating the same thing over and over is pathological at best. Repeating the same thing over and over until everyone believes it was a tactic used by the nazis. The big question would be - are you trying to emulate someone that is pathological or someone that is a nazi?

Don't think that your tactics and where they come from are going unnoticed, rick. It speaks VOLUMES about the scum that is representing you in this election.

We have something i common Jersy Girl. I wouldn't support AARP either but for a different reason. As far as I'm concerned they are shills for NY Life, the Hartford and United Health Care. And I won't support a corporately sponsored "grass roots" organization.

With a national health care scheme it should be obvious to anyone capable of thinking, that the population has a better chance of control over costs than being dependant on for profit insurance companies. Historically they have never been known for putting their customers first. That is why so many nations are no longer considering that it is good for their populations to be dependant on for profit insurance. Does anyone not involved with the Insurance Co.s really think that for profit is cheaper and better? No country that has evolved from that system considers going back to that way of Medical Insurance. Are those countries that have left that system stupid? No other country spends as much on Medicare as we.

Seniors are awesome! They have the life experiences to clearly recognize when they're being sold snake oil. Romney- the man who has stood on every side of every issue and has blamed, faulted and vilified everyone who is not conservative. He has offered nothing but rhetoric. He denounces Obamacare which Romney authored with conservatives who wrote the Individual Mandate. Ryan, on the other hand wants to be perceived as a fiscal conservative debt/deficit hawk and a capitalist. But his record clearly shows his socialist side with his vote for the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 or that he voted for two unfunded wars and unfunded Medicare Part D costing trillion$ in debt! Ryan in particular, as a member of the legislative branch, has failed to legislate anything to get the country's economy moving again! No, he'd rather let this nation be downgraded into oblivion. After the seniors lost so much in pensions, investments, and 401k's after the last Conservative administration failed to protect Americans from the financial extremists on Wall Street (worshiping their god of greed) while they've been left with 4 years of Tea Party obstructionism that's cost seniors 4 years of investment earning potential. Seniors, please, keep up the good work and show those two salesmen where to go peddle their uselessness.

              @ 2.3 Rick-868962

Appearing on Letterman and such is called campaigning.

Regarding Nettie, Obama is quite capable of dealing with him. Obviously ALL of us do not know ALL the facts which definitely makes ALL of us not qualified to second guess about it.

As for playing golf and whatever else Obama does when he is not in the White house, President Obama is ALWAYS on duty, ALWAYS. He may be out there swinging a golf club but he has people on the sidelines taking calls and keeping Obama up to date on happenings as needed. His job as President is a 24 hour, 7 days a week, 365 days a year position which pays very little for all he has to do, the time spent doing it, and having less time with his family.

Even when he's campaigning around the country he's still working in either Air Force One or his campaign bus, his mobile offices.

There are very few, including yourself, who would want to take on all that responsibility and devote most of their time to the position, with the only reward being doing right by one's country and it's people.

It takes a very special person to fill the position of President of this country, and do right by it, and President Obama has shown he is well qualified to be our President.

As for Romney, not even worth the mention, but he did mention the 47% of us not worth dealing with.

              Romney/Ryan = No Returns - No Presidency

Why should you take responsibility over your health care when you can let the government do it for you... If we keep on the course we are on now, you won't even have to worry about providing food for your family... the government will do it for you... that home you live in... government! Hell, before you know it, you won't even have to work any longer... the government will provide everything for you... I won't even go into what you will lose along the way, why put any negatives into your hopeful enthusiasm.

It will take some serious discussion to find ways to lower the cost of health in this country. The Private insurers have no universal rules or regulation to comply to. Currently, each insurance company has its own way of determining premiums, and each state has different laws to regulate these practices. As a result, two individuals buying the same health insurance policy might pay different premiums depending on which insurance company they choose or which state they live in.

The cost of Health insurance/ individual in most of the Developed Nations is Around $3500, the cost in the USA is almost 3 times $8500 a year.

Cost reduction should be the #1 priority in order of keeping Medicare/medicaid viable.

competition and market expansion can reduce cost. If The Government or any other big group become the biggest buyer of insurance, they can negotiate better rates. (instead of the pay for retail way we are paying now in medicare and medicaid)

Writing from Canada, I have to say the argument about a government "bureaucrat" running your health care is bogus. Here in Canada, you can have a substantial impact on your health care through your provincial member of parliament. If you don't like the way health care is being handled you can get your provincial member of parliament to intervene, or you can vote them out. You have no such pull on an insurance company. They answer to their stockholders, not their clients. In my fifty years, I have never ever had to talk to a government bureaucrat to get approval for health care nor am I afraid to get medical help because of a deductable. It does not happen and there is no deductables.

Sirie, for healthcare, which is the topic here, Obama has a plan...in writing...in fact it's signed into law. It's called the Affordable Care Act. Google is your friend.

Obamacare is a very lousy plan and if it doesn't get repealed, time will tell exactly how really lousy it is.

Jersy Girl 1: As a nurse...I can tell you that you are absolutely wrong. In fact as someone who works in health care, the bill didn't go far enough, but since this country is full of individuals and corporations who want nothing more than to turn health care into another Wall Street debacle, the ACA is just the starting point. I belong to a group called Physicians for a National Health Care Plan...if you'd like to open up your mind a little bit after you turn off Rush radio or Fox News...you might be shocked to learn that people in health care understand that our system MUST change and the passage of the ACA was a remarkable accomplishment for a first term President...I am going to see to it that President Obama finishes the work he started.

Brianb1956...you are an absolute troll. Have you ever lived with a voucher system? You sound like someone that doesn't think for himself. There are plenty of instances in the history of this country where people screamed for the government to step in, for instance non-smoking, seat belts, etc. all for the health of it's citizens. So what is all of this nonsense about people want to be fed, housed, educated, etc. by the government. You Repucks pick and choose when you want government intervention and when not. I don't know if that is in the interest of the country. In a democracy the majority rules. Unfortunately your people are working very hard to stop the majority from excercising their right to vote. Proud of yourselves? If you think our President is so bad, I hope that when he wins you'll be even more miserable than you already are. One more comment....Robme released his 2011 tax returns with huge charity contributions. Why so huge? His Mormon church DEMANDS that he give 10%, if not they're at his door just like they would be at any other Mormon's. They don't have a choice....talking about brainwashing. No cult leader for me.

So if everyone is on the taxpayer dole (please take note I did not use GOVERNMENT -- they don't have any money, it's everyone that contributes to taxes) please provide a detailed explanation of WHO is contributing the $$$$?????? I guess as long as "you're" getting yours you don't give a scrap about those of us that work and pay for those that do not. Someday we'll all get the same mentality by shear tiredness and then tell me what's left? It's called GREECE and we'll be rioting in the streets.

The time has come for Congress to start passing party-specific legislation:

                    1) Republicans SHALL BE BANNED from receiving any medical and/or life-saving/life-extending medications from STEM CELL RELATED research;

                    2) Republicans SHALL BE BANNED from seeking legal recourse in any manner due to injury of a faulty product, a legal contract has been broken, nullified or where fraud has been committed. Further, such Republicans shall be banned from taking part in ANY class action lawsuit and such suits filed on their behalf shall be nullified by the court.

                    3) Republicans SHALL BE TAXED at a rate sufficient to fully pay for the continuing war in Afghanistan, any future conflicts around the world and all military costs associated for injuries to service members as a
                    result of such conflicts.

                    4) Republicans SHALL BE removed from the Medicare system and provided with a voucher of $5000 for them to find their own insurance plan. Additionally, no insurance company shall be forced to provide them coverage and/or services for preexisting conditions.

                    5) Republicans shall PAY ALL COSTS UNTIL THE AGE OF 18 of any child born to any woman who does not have the means to pay for the housing, food, education, clothing and other costs and whose right to terminate that pregnancy was delayed or denied due to any and all anti-choice legislation.

                    6) Republicans SHALL BE CHARGED BEFORE any emergency services personnel (including police, fire and ambulatory services) are dispatched.

                    7) Republicans SHALL BE CHARGED for each mile of roadway they travel each year to fully compensate for the repair thereof.

                    8) Republicans SHALL REIMBURSE ALL NON-CHILD HOUSEHOLDS for the ACTUAL COST subsidized by these households for all children from said Republican household using the public schools.

                    9) Republicans shall IN NO WAY BENEFIT, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, from any law, rule or regulation protecting the land, air, water or consumer product - including food - that they use or consume. Additionally, they shall be exempt from being hired with a minimum wage and any associated workplace benefits.

                    10) Democrats shall PAY SUCH TAXES at a rate that shall fully reimburse the federal government for the costs related to the health, welfare and safety of themselves IN ADDITION to those unemployed,
underemployed, impoverished and/or disabled and unable OR UNWILLING to take care of themselves.

                    11) Each person SHALL COMPENSATE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ANNUALLY for any and all costs related to that portion of the federal debt run up by said party-specific law, regulation or rule and for the proportion of debt (and associated interest costs) run up while their party's candidate occupied the White House.

                    12) Any person declaring themselves "independent"or "non-affiliated" shall pay at a rate of one-half the
party-specific rate for any and all of the above, plus an equivalent rate forfuture laws, rules and regulations under which they shall benefit.

That's a good start. That way, within a decade or so we will se beyond a shadow of a doubt WHO'S VERSION OF AMERICA ACTUALLY WORKS.

Brian: Another quote from a Republican WRONG FACTS. I believe that Louisiana is a RED State and has been for several years so where did the Quote come from that New Orleans is a Democratic stronghold.

The Seniors of this country are not stupid and know when a speaker (Ryan) is LIEING to them. They have had the 716 Billion trick explained to them by the Congressional Budget Office, President Obama and President Bill Clinton. Now who do you think the Senors are going to believe these three people who understand what happened or Rep Bill Ryan who has never accomplished anything in 16 years in the House. Again the Seniors of this country can spot a Liar when he is on the Podium.

It is a little unusual to here a crowd of Seniors yell LIER while a Politician is talking. Normally we let the person talk even when we know he is LIEING. This reminds me of the State of the union speach when the Supreme Court Judge and Representitive yelled he is lieing when President Oboma was speaking. He wasn't lieing but they thought they understood what he was saying and were wrong.

I admire Rep. Ryan for trying to tell the Group about his Medicare Plan but the Republican plan is so bad he should have expected to get a few booo's.

At this point in the Campaign the Republicans need to say and do dumb things if they have any chance of getting elected.

Most of us know by looking at the state Results that Romney has no chance of being elected. He is loosing by 5 or more points in Colorado, Iowa, Wisconson, Florida, and Ohio. The Democrats could win the Election by 100 Electorial Votes.

                    Big Landslide for the Democrats.

Every National TV show keeps talking about the race being close on a national basis but that is not how a Preesident is Elected.

The article is about an AARP Conference which I believe included Seniors from different areas than New Orleans. Wrong Facts again.

Pat, i was on a gaming forum back in 2008 that had a section on politics. In there, all these kids were pimping Ryan as the second coming of Reagan. They posted some videos trying to get me on board with their opinions and when i stated that he followed the same tactics as all the other right wing demagogues they had a tizzy (fallacies of red herrings and straw man). I found it so amusing when he was picked for VP because i recalled those kids being so proud of him and all the BS he spouted even back then.

I think that's why I am so happy today, September 21, 2012 to see so many Americans finally finally speaking up against the Republican platform. I don't know why it took so long. Particularly the media.

I guess it took a Romney candidate type for America to finally see exactly what these people stood for. They weren't going to believe it until they heard it right from the candidate himself.

                      And heard they did.

We need President Obama and a change of Congress.

                      sirie,

koalas seem harmless but have claws that could eviscerate any foe. Most of the time they avoid confrontation, however, because they are not adept fighters. They are very promiscous animals that rarely choose the same mate twice.

It is estimated around 70-80% of koalas are carrying chlamydia which can be passed on at birth.

Chlamydia causes chronic infections in koalas. The infections occur in the urogenital tract (C. pecorum) and the respiratory tract (C. pecorum and C. pneumoniae) and can cause infertility, blindness (to facts) and ultimately death. The visible symptoms are conjunctivitis ('pink eye') and urinary tract infections causing incontinence, leading to a condition known as 'dirty tail' or 'wet bottom' (Reed 2002).

Koalas appear drunk or lazy because they have developed a low-energy lifestyle to compensate for their extremely low-energy diet. The 600 to 800 grams of eucalyptus leaves that koalas eat each day provides them with as much energy as one serving of breakfast cereal does for us (Phillip Island Nature Park 1998).

Several means 3 to 5 people. Didn't mention how many was in attendance. BTW, AARP is a big supporter of Obama's. Also noted Obama addressed them by satellite and not in person. What is Obama's policy to keep medicare solvent? He doesn't have any and don't care because he won't be in office in 4 to 6 yrs from now.

Ryan, you included the exact same Medicare savings in your budgets.

Stop telling likes like your Wisconsin Republican predecessor Senator Joseph McCarthy.

We want experts in charge, not House Republicans Ryan. We saw what happened when you rejected the Simpson/Bowles, Gang of Six, and Grand Bargain plans that offered for $4 trillion in debt reduction over the next 10 years. According to the CBO, Ryan's plan was so bad that the CBO said America would be better off doing nothing over the next decade than to pass the Ryan plan.

The sad part for Ryan and Romney is that those booing includes their base of supporters. Ryan thought he could go to Florida and lie like a rug about saving medicare. Does he think all his base is senile? Everyone including the Obama team needs to make clear to these seniors that making medicare a voucher system is not saving it. It is destroying it. How stupid does he think people are. The only way they can win on this subject is by confusion and lack of details and wrong intentional details. Obama needs to make it plain what these guys want to do. And it the stupidest thing for Romney to say he is going to rescue those on soc security so they won't be personally irresponsible and dependent by providing them jobs. And has Romney ever really worked at a job? Other than rearranging figures on a paper. He is not a leader. He is a paper pushing manipulator of figures. As someone said appropriately for him. Figures don't lie but liars do figure. And when you look and see what he has had to go back to amend you have described him magnificently. And Paul Ryan appears to have got in way over his head. Glub glub glub!

“I don’t consider this approach bold or particularly courageous,” Obama said, per the Washington Post. “I just think it’s a bad idea. No American should spend their golden years at the mercy of insurance companies.”

I applaud the AARP. As many other posters have stated previously, we're already helping our parents with selecting plans with Medicare NOW! If my parents were faced with a voucher and told to go out and find the best deal for them when they are in their 80's - I can only imagine the confusion. I would guess quite a few seniors would be so confused, they'd wind up without insurance at all.

Way to go Seniors! I'd boo the lyin' thing too!

Agreed Layton - my parents are in their 70's and quite self-sufficient. One of the reasons they are so self-sufficient (as opposed to those nasty 47% Club victims) is they have Medicare to rely upon vs. protecting their financial interests from those rather vile insurance companies more than happy to ransack their pensions.

923 Executive Orders in 40 Months

Obama has signed 923 Executive Orders in 40
                          months!

                          What did Congress do
in those 40 months? (The House - considerable. The Senate -nothing, not even a
budget nor allowing any House bill to be considered.) A whole new order must
prevail in Wash. DC as a result of this next election!

                          Now look at
                          these:

                          period.

                          -EXECUTIVE ORDER
11051 specifies the responsibility of the Office of Emergency Planning and gives
authorization to put all Executive Orders into effect in times of increased
international tensions and economic or financial crisis.

                          -EXECUTIVE ORDER
11310 grants authority to the Department of Justice to enforce the plans set out
in Executive Orders, to institute industrial support, to establish judicial and
legislative liaison, to control all aliens, to operate penal and correctional
institutions, and to advise and assist the President.

                          -EXECUTIVE ORDER
11921 allows the Federal Emergency Preparedness Agency to develop plans to
establish control over the mechanisms of production and distribution, of energy
sources, wages, salaries, credit and the flow of money in U.S. financial
institution in any undefined national emergency. It also provides that
when a state of emergency is declared by the President, Congress cannot
review the action for six months.

Feel free to verify the "executive orders" at will... and
these are just the major ones ...

                          Watch Obama's
actions, not his words! By his actions he will show you where America is
                          headed.

                          .... Just this week,
Obama has issued a new executive order that seeks to "harmonize" U.S. economic
regulations with the rest of the world. This new executive order is yet another
incremental step that is pushing us closer to a North American Union and a
                          one world economic system.

Here's another recent Obama Executive Order:

Obama, with great glee, signed on March 16, 2012, his Executive Order 13603 redefining and
creating new policy about America’s National Defense.

Obama’s Executive order 13603 is “National
                          Defense Resources Preparedness.”

In black and white, Obama laid out his
blueprint for taking over America and our economy by seizing control
                          of:

                          · “All
forms of civil transportation”—forced labor. In other words, “induction” as the
                          executive
                          order
                          delicately refers to military conscription

                          · “All
commodities and products capable of being ingested by either human beings or
                          animals”

                          · “Health
resources, which include, but are not limited to: drugs, biological products,
medical devices, materials, facilities, health supplies, services and
                          equipment”

                          · “All
                          forms of energy”

                          · “All
                          usable water from all sources”

Scary yes—but it doesn’t stop there.

                          Get this: federal
officials would “issue regulations to prioritize and allocate resources.”Maybe
this is why so many government departments are buying millions of rounds of
                          ammunition.

Obama also has stated in his executive order that every government
bureaucracy“shall act as necessary and appropriate.”

The orders Obama has created makes this country
                          socialistic/communistic.

Unfortunately, most Americans have absolutely no idea what is
                          happening.

One can only presume that Obama was with a high priced hooker the other night in Vegas when that 3 AM phone call came in? (I HOPE she was worth the life of 4 great Americans!) Funny, isn't that EXACTLY what Hillary Clinton warned us about regarding Barack Hussein Obama? When that 3 AM phone call came in, he didn't even bother to answer it!

Here's another moron. Do you ever bother to check the lies you are spoon fed?

Obama specifically has signed executive orders starting with the number EO-13489 and forward.

Now a little more research... Wikipedia lists the Executive Orders each president was responsible for. Check it out! John F Kennedy was responsible for EO's 10914–11127 signed between 1961 and 1963. This covers the first 12 executive orders you list. How can you blame Obama for these? They were signed 50 years ago!

That pretty much renders whatever else you have to say null and void!

The National Defense Resources Preparedness executive order (Executive Order 13603) is an order of the United States's President signed by President Barack Obama on March 16, 2012.[1] The purpose of this executive order is to delegate authority and address national defense resource policies and programs under the Defense Production Act of 1950.[1]

While some have labeled the executive order totalitarian and a preparation for peace-time martial law [2], it has also been called mostly a consolidation of existing laws and directives, being based on Executive Order 10421 and Executive Order 11490.[3] Doug Mataconis of the "Classical Liberal" online journal Outside the Beltway described the order as "nothing more than a restatement of policy that has been in place for decades and grants no authority to the President or the Cabinet that they don’t already have under existing law."[4 -

“In order to save Medicare for future generations, we propose putting 50 million seniors, not 15 unaccountable bureaucrats, in charge of their own health-care decisions,”

Actually instead of the supposed "unaccountable bureaucrats he wants to put it in the hands of the insurance industry death panels. They are accountable as they usually are rewarded for denying care.

Vs. the Obama plan which is give everyone elses future away while he's in office, so when they really need it, the money will already be spent. When that occurs, the democrats and BHO will reply, YOYO! because their perks are paid for first!

Right, Rick...just like your private insurance company decides what treatment they will pay for and what they will not. All they have to do is call something "experimental" and BOOM! Payment denied. No payment=no treatment for your illness. No treatment and you die.

The health "care" industry runs the biggest death panels around.

                                Lyin' Ryan

                                From the article above:

"It weakens Medicare for today's seniors and puts it at risk for the next generation. First, it funnels $716 billion out of Medicare to pay for a new entitlement we didn't even ask for. Second, it puts 15 unelected bureaucrats in charge of Medicare's future."

Absoulutely unbelievable how Congressman Ryan is still lying about the $716 Billion MOVED from Medicare ADVANTAGE to shore-up the donut hole on Prescription drugs. President Obama SAVED Seniors money, and kept it out of the insurance tycoons pockets.

Shame you you, congressman. And shame on anyone who still believes this swill from the right-wing propagandist media.

Layton, you are so right!!!! More people like us have to hammer home this point.

I am the caregiver for my 87-year-old mother. I also help my 84-year-old aunt and 82-year-old mother-in-law. At that age, they cannot or don't want the burden of receiving a voucher payment, and having to sort through, then choose an insurance company. So they depend on others, like me. Medicare Part D -- for prescription medicines -- was a horror. Even I could barely understand the formulary and doughnut hole, etc.

Paul Ryan may have thought, "Now what would I do to change Medicare?" But he considered this from a 40-something's viewpoint. He needs to put himself in the shoes of those who need Medicare most.

So I ditto Layton: Way to go Seniors! I'd boo too!

even in current Ryan's plan on medicare, there will be no change what so ever for seniors of 55 and older. so, what's your point?

it doesn't matter, without any changes or reform in medicare, it will just disappear within 20 years, whatever your age is or whether you want to count on it.

Twit has been studying for weeks now, but he'll get on stage and duh!!! His lies will be squashed by Obama and he'll stand their stuttering and looking like a deer caught in the headlights. In case you didn't notice, the big change in Medicare won't take place until after the Baby Boom generation are safely retired. They had to push the changes down the line a bit, so that the older people will still want to vote for them. Those who are younger and further removed from the reality of health care as a senior citizen are expected to tune out this message, since it won't affect them for such a long time down the road.

AARP is pro ObamaCare, they backed it so that they can sell extra insurance coverage to seniors. Senior have to realize that SS is going to go bankrupt because just about every senior will take out more then 3 times what they put into it. Of course they are going to boo him, the funny thing is they will not be effected by it since a lot will die before ObamaCare kicks in, and then it will be too late. It is the uninsureable that will gain the rest of the population will loose with ObamaCare.

Since you cannot back up your lies with anything remotely resembling evidence it is safe to say you are just twisting reality to make it conform to your insane and childish fantasies. Typical teatard.
