Obama hits Romney on 47 percent: 'I don't see a lot of victims'

Carolyn Kaster / AP

President Barack Obama speaks at a campaign event at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium, Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, in Woodbridge, Va.

President Barack Obama struck back Friday at Mitt Romney's attempt to cast himself as a candidate of "change" as well as the GOP nominee's surreptitiously-recorded comments at a fundraiser earlier this year.

The president delivered some of his most forceful criticism of Romney at a campaign rally in northern Virginia, seizing on Romney's secretly videotaped remarks that he was not looking to appeal to 47 percent of the country.

“The values we believe in don't just belong to workers or businesses, the 53 percent or the 47 percent, the rich or the poor, the 1 percent, the 99 percent -- these are Americans values. They belong to all of us!” Obama said to a cheering crowd of 12,000 at a minor-league baseball stadium in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Obama also noted as a point of contrast that he happened to lose, as a matter of coincidence, 47 percent of the vote in the 2008 election, but still looked to lead as president those Americans who did not vote for him.

“In 2008 47 percent of the country didn't vote for me. But on the night of the election I said to all those Americans, I may not have won your vote but I hear your voices, I need your help and I will be your president,” he said.

“And for everybody who's watching or anybody here who's still undecided, I don't know how many people are going to vote for me this time around, but I'm telling the American people, I will be fighting for you no matter what,” he continued.

The president also took issue in Woodbridge with Romney’s statement during the fundraiser that that 47 percent of voters, who don’t pay income taxes and may be on government assistance, are “victims.”

“I don't see a lot of victims in this crowd today,” he said. “I see hard-working Virginians.”

Obama also struck back on Romney’s criticism Thursday after Obama, speaking at a Univision town hall that day, said he realized after taking office that “you can’t change Washington from the inside.”

At a rally in Sarasota, Florida, shortly after Obama finished his town hall, Romney retooled his stump speech to include this criticism: “The president today threw in the white flag of surrender again. He said he can’t change Washington from inside, he can only change it from outside. Well, we’re going to give him that chance in November. He’s going outside!”

“I can change Washington, I will change Washington, we’ll get the job done from the inside,” Romney continued.

Friday, Obama turned Romney’s words against him, mocking him for getting “really excited” about the remark and rewriting his speech.

“He stood up at a rally. Proudly declared: I'll get the job done from the inside,” Obama said. “What kind of inside job is he talking about?”

Later, he repeated the charge: “We don't want an inside job in Washington. We want change in Washington!”

Romney thought he did so well in the primary debates. He hasn't seen anything. Barely winning a few points against third rate has beens and never was possible candidates does not prepare you to be President. Romney will not have the advantage of an opponent who literally say's "oops " or declares he wants to be in charge of the first moon base.

President Obama is a very intelligent speaker who won't hesitate to call Romney out on any BS he says.

There is one requirement for winning this election, very simple. Your first name can't rhyme with the word CROCK, i.e. crock of lies!

If Obama really was an AMERICAN, he would have cancelled his fundraiser in VEGAS the moment he heard that terrorist stormed the US Embassy and killed 4 Americans in the process. He could CARE LESS!

Obama, best APOLOGIST this country has ever had... that is the ONE area that he beats JIMMY CARTER, just the 1

If you listen to President Obama and Michelle Obama, you will notice that on the campaign trail they don't talk about themselves, they talk about us and America.

Really love couple in the White House. Very very inspiring.

And I think that's why America is standing by them. They have always stood by us.

To all the Liberals - a little news!

Day Two From Newsvine Solitary;

Greetings my lefty liberal friends!

Things are improving greatly here in the Newsvine clink!

Sargeant Sally has assigned me to the Re-Elect President Obama button assembly line (at least they are made here in the good old US of A, unlike Willard's who imports his from China).

The pay ain't great but the perks are fabulous, by the time I get out of here I should have enough buttons to cover half of IA!

Warden Tyler told me, if I keep up with my good behavior, he may allow me to go to arts & crafts class on Monday! Decisions...decisions... lol

I'm sorry to miss the party over at the Dew Drop Inn tonight - please know I'll be there in spirit!

If it wouldn't be too much to ask, I would greatly appreciate it if, you could hit B12 on the old jukebox and play a little "Jail House Rock"!

You all take care & keep fighting the good fight!

{{{hugs}}}

Here are some really cool photos of the president in VA, particularly the batting stance he showcases.

I do hope in the winding days of this election, President Obama enjoys himself and has some fun. These crowds are so pumped to see him.

Given Romney's embarrassingly poor performance in the GOP debates against a field of crazies, crackpots, and criminals, can you imagine how badly he will fare against our president? I can hardly wait!

"I'll tell you what, ten thousand bucks? $10,000.00 bet?" —Mitt Romney, attempting to make a wager with Rick Perry during a Republican presidential debate to settle a disagreement about health care (December 2011)

"I'm Mitt Romney, and yes, Wolf, that's also my first name!" —Mitt Romney, at the beginning of a November 2011 Republican presidential debate, getting his own name wrong (his first name is ''Willard,'' and his middle name is "Milton", or as he seems to prefer, ''Mitt'')

Barack Hussein Obama Hmm! Hmmm! Hmm! The Black JC! ,(Jimmy Carter, who else could I possibly be talking about?), a man who SAYS he sees no victims, but then goes out and panders to every special interest group he can find, giving away freebies on the taxpayers dime, trying to get the votes of, Women, College Students, Hispanics, Unions, Blacks, telling them they are..........wait for it!.............VICTIMS!, What a guy!meanwhile back in the real world, after boasting continuously that HE got Bin Ladin, the Middle East explodes, An American Ambassador is Raped and killed in OUR Consulate,on what is considered American Soil! and what does noble comrade do? He goes to bed without knowing the fate of our Ambassador and the other Americans killed , because he has to go to Vegas the next day,and has done nothing since, hoping if he does nothing no one would notice, and if it were up to the MSM,(Marxist-Socialist Media), that would be true, but try as they might, they can't bury this crap sandwich, while during the same week, our credit rating is downgraded for the second time in American History, BOTH TIMES under the chosen ones Administration, Our National Debt goes over 16 trillion dollars, more than our GDP!, twenty plus million people out of work, more people stopping even looking for work than finding jobs every week, but, they do find time to clear themselves of smuggling arms to anti-western nations, while not allowing the investigator access to any information or witnesses,on second thought, seems to me, maybe there really are victims involved in this ,America and the American People.

Most Americans realize that the economy and national debt are in serious trouble and needs fixed. When interest rates get back up to 15% again to buy a house and inflation sky rockets because of what the Fed is doing, come back and we will talk. Stop putting your head in the sand and come up for air.

I took a moment to think of all my friends and colleagues, and I know one person who is currently going to college and is receiving food stamps. Guess what, it happens to be one of my only friends who is a republican (he doesn't brag about it, though). I know it has already been suggested a few times, but people like Jersey Girl should probably stop hanging around a bunch of low life republicans. Hey Rational Coloradan.
You seem to be missing some comprehension in your own quoting of Harry Reid:

"@Nigel in WA: Harry Reid did not claim that Mitt Romney didn't pay taxes, and therefore owes no apology"
Yes he did!. The first part of his statement was just quoting an unnamed source (which I think was your point) but the last part where he says "because he hasn't" ... <-- THAT IS HARRY REID CLAIMING THAT ROMNEY DIDN'T PAY TAXES!
The actual quote:"So, the word's out that he hasn't paid any taxes for 10 years. Let him prove that he has paid taxes, because he hasn't,"
Note that Romney doesn't have to release every year's full details to show this so don't go bleating about not having everything. You have proof that he did pay taxe within the last ten years so the statement was simply not true.

I have had a few of them who have been unfortunate enough to have been laid off but no one that I know, and I mean no one has ever said that they like being unemployed. The unemployment compensation is not designed to form life time satisfaction and logic and commonsense tells me that these people saying this are liars. From my experience there is no one who can convince me that those creatures who tell these disgusting stories are truthful. Mitt paid less than 15% taxes on his income last year, I paid 21%, I must be doing something wrong, I made 54k, he made 4.5 mil. Besides that, is there anyone left in America stupid enough to swallow the B.S. from the republicans about Friedmanite economic theory(trickle down)?

@NigelWA, Harry Ried was talking about the years Mitt isn't going to release, Harry knew Mitt was going to release this year's return, what Harry said was that Mittsy wouldn't release his other years exactly because the amount he paid was minuscule.

Let me get this straight, when I was in Vietnam humping up and down the mountains in the central highlands, Mittsy was enjoying a deferment to preach Mormonism to the French, but he comes home and goes to rallys supporting the war. His party did everything it could to tear down the honorable service of two vets in the senate. First George Bush's campaign eluded to a "Manchurian" effect McCain may be suffering from during the primary in 2000. Fast forward to the 2004 campaign whe the swift boat traitors linesd up to denigrate Sneator Kerry's service, while everyone seem to skim over the fact that GWB's daddy pulled the necessary strings to put ole Georgie boy in front of the line for the Guard down in Texas.

We elected that scumbag, do yourselves a favor, don't vote for this republican scum bag in November.

By the way Mittsy, the White Horse Prophecy, about a Mormon saving the constitutional government of the U.S., well you have, by revealing the republican party for what it is, an instrument of a plutocratic oligarchy, you may have saved the U.S., un-intentionally, but quite effectively.

I'm sure this will irk all you obamaites, but Obama can't see the victims because he's looking in a different direction. He's looking at the 47% that receive government money (I don't consider social security retirement govt money - they paid it) and seeing lots of votes for him. The victims are in the other direction The victims are the 53% paying taxes. We taxpayers will see less of our earned money if Obama gets reelected - hence the victimization.

About 1% of food stamps do get wasted due to fraud ; we already know that, and of course, we should do the best to fix that. If you had to throw away 1c so that you could spend 99c to help out a fellow American and get the economy on an even keel, would you do it?

It's not a difficult question to answer.

Here's a few facts that we can glean from what Mitt released today:

1) He has BOATLOADS of money stashed with Goldman Sachs. (How would that affect how he governs them as President?)

2) He's a partner in at least 30 overseas partnerships. (How would that affect his foreign policies?)

3) In 2005, his foreign taxes were $333,149. 2006 was $276,386. 2007 was $275,488. 2008 was $151,015. (How much money must he have overseas to owe that much in foreign taxes?)

4) And, apparently, Mitt paid NO U.S. income tax in 2009, since he has an $18,937 foreign tax credit left over from that year that he applied to his 2011 U.S. taxes.

Very, very interesting!!!

Obama's mad and he has a right to be! He has been working extremely hard and thought he had brought the number of people dependent on government handouts closer to 50%

He was wrong! It's the number of people paying no federal income taxes that is at 50%!If he could only have four more years. He could bring those numbers way up!

So you thought Romney had made a false statement. Well he was only quoting the real numbers! Give Obama the next four years he is striving for and we will see real improvement in the numbers of people totally dependent on government!

Of course that means taxing the hell out of the rest of the population and curtailing Social Security payments! All so these people can ride on the backs of others!

Most candidates are willing to fight for every vote they can get. But I guess there is a first in everything.

    Why??????????/ Mitt...WHY.....Mitt, a gift keeps on giving...Thanks, Mitt.

    Private Sector Payroll Employment

This was the CNN Money headline in Bush's last month of office:

Employers slashed 598,000 more jobs in January

Steve C-526943Mitt paid less than 15% taxes on his income last year, I paid 21%, I must be doing something wrong, I made 54k, he made 4.5 mil

Actually, Steve, Mitt "made" $14.5 million last year. Anyone want to tell us how he "earned" that much? Or whether he was worth it to the American economy?

Something is wrong with this country when financial leeches get 300x what a working man makes.

Later, he repeated the charge: “We don't want an inside job in Washington. We want change in Washington!”

That is why Obama will PUNISH all those who make significant incomes LOL

At least you get the point, Grimey, which is more than one can say about Mitt Romney. I really think Romney waits to see what President Obama will say, then says the opposite. However, what President Obama was referring to is that he can only do so much without Congress; Congress needs to change from the inside or the people will force that change from the outside.

During the 2008 campaign President Obama often said change happens from the bottom up. If we want Washington to change, then we must be the ones who force that change. Change in Washington does not come from within, it comes from We the People demanding it.

Would you give up on the "all democrats are lazy freeloaders" thing.

That is a pile of propaganda BS spoon fed to you by corporate interests and your repeating of it only illustrates your inability to recognize BS when it is put in front of you.

Believing that Government is something that can be used to help people that are in need is very different from being a "freeloader who made poor choices."

    • Hey Jersey -- I'm one of the 47% that Mitt talked about -- I voted for President Obama and will again. Unlike Mitt, I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth. My father was an alcoholic. I started paying income taxes in 1959, when I was 13. I worked my way through college -- both under grad and graduate school, I spent my entire life working in the private sector, put my own 2 kids through college and saved for my retirement. The only government check I've ever cashes is a tax return check. But according to Mitt Romney --- I'm some kind of a 3rd class citizen because I don't vote to give spoiled brats like him more breaks than they have already.

Charlie: Standing O! My story is similar to yours. Only I couldn't save for retirement AND put my child through school, so now she's in her last semester and I'm broke, cashed out everything to give her the opportunity. Husband divorced me 17 years ago, and saved not one lousy dollar to help his only child through college--now he's collecting early SS so he can't give her any help whatsoever.

The only reason this is an issue is because unlike obama who has to attempt to explain common sense comments to his supporters Romney knew his supporters knew what he was referring to. And this is for all of you who needs this to be explained, we know that the 47% of these people were the ones whom obama has hypnotized into believing he has done a good job. Of course we know that the real percentage of those who would support obama reguardless of what he does is only about 25%, and the other 22% are the ones who have been fooled, that 22% needs to wake up and smell the roses. People what kind of deal has obama made with the Russians that he had to whisper to the leader to wait until after he is re-elected to follow thru. Obama and his co-horts pelosi and reid have been behind so many closed door meetings that there is no way we can know what they are up to, this is another one of hundreds of his lies he said while fooling people into electing him, he said that his Presidency would be the most transparent in history, instead he is the worst for making deals behind closed doors. You people had better wake up now or in a few months you women had better get used to wearing scarfs and veils on your face.

What exactly is "President" Romney going to do to win over Democrats in Washington? What is he willing to compromise on?

And more importantly, what is "President" Romney going to do to win over the millions and millions of Americans who voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and will do so again in 2012? When Romney attacks the President the way he's done for the last four years, he's telling every one of us that voted for him that OUR votes don't matter, that OUR goals are the wrong ones, that WE don't love our country, and that our vision of America is totally wrong.

So I'll ask once again, Mr. Romney - how do you plan to change US?

Romney would change Washington by doing exactly as he said in the fundraiser. He would throw 47% of Americans under the bus.

Pretty scary when Republicans are defending Romney by saying he's said the same thing in fundraisers for over a year.

It's the reason Romney makes sure to let one of his sons, his wife, or Ryan do most of the speaking and answer most of the questions. Romney put his money where his heart is, in foreign countries.

Michigan Northerner - thanks for setting Xabre straight about Romney's job growth record while he was governor of MA. I lived there then and still live in MA. Dems took the four year average of job growth under Romney to make him look worse because they know when he left office unemployment was in the low 4%. These dems believe all the lies Obama and his followers tell. This 47th in job growth was part of Deval Patrick's speech at the dem convention. He is MA current governor and he knows the statistic isn't accurate. As liberal as they come. There is a reason why Obama's illegal aunt and his uncle have bothed live in MA. His aunt living off our tax dollars in public housing. Illegals cost MA tax payers over $1 Billion a year in services but bleeding hearts want to give them more. Would leave but have family here. Things were great under Romney. Unfortunately uninformed uneducated people like Xabre will keep spewing incorrect facts and the clueless people on this board will believe it.

Context, context, context. Changing Washington from the outside requires us to vote for people (or unvote for people already there) to have good representation. All we need to do is ask, "did this senator/representative try to solve problems or did they try to stop everything that was just outside their own ideologue?" Most of the GOP TP'ers just gummed up the works and thought they were doing their job. Any dolt in Congress can say "NO!"

And then there is Romney. The secret Romney video had tons to say about him. I thought this encapsulated it perfectly:

Well, I disagree with the president....I am a victim of the recession caused by the Repulicans and they need to pay us back!

First, unemployment needs to continue indefinitely until jobs come back

2nd, we 47% need to be paid double tax returns

3rd, we need FREE healthcare and FREE Housing

jsmithzzzzz - Why don't you move to Cuba if you want all that stuff for free.

You can also wait 4 more years if Obama gets elected and re-distributes first form the rich, then from the middle class and keeps the poor and middle classes at bay. Then we will have just one class poor and salve to the government. Yeah! Change you can believe on........

I saw the tax report from Romney not a surprise for me. This was the last surprise for this week that I have been telling you about. The real big one is still to come.

The GOP could raise more money if they put on a show. I suggest the Wizard of Oz. Don't worry, it can be done on the cheap.

Mitt could play all the major roles:

                Tinman - no heart

                Cowardly Lion - no courage

                Scarecrow - no brains

Dorothy - lost in a strange land

                filling out the cast..

Wicked Witch (Paul Ryan) - I'll get your grandma and her Medicare too!

Wizard (Karl Rove) - Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain

The Good Witch could be played by Ann if they change it to a non-speaking role

He will either release several years of returns prior to the debates, or have a devil of a time explaining why he hasn't.

This "release" will only increase the demands to make previous returns public. The candidate has again, by his halting half steps, exacerbated a situation that he tried to quell.

Would that any President can be looking out for the interests of all. This reminds me of Don Coleone's famous rebuke to Victor Sollazzo: "I wish you the best of luck in as much as your interests do not conflict with mine".

This is the point of the matter - Mr. Obama intends to advocate for the base of his party and constituency, workers and socially progressive humanists.

Mr. Romney intends to advocate for his party and constituency, the 1%, Big Business and Wall Street at the expense of We The People.

We have a clear choice: one candidate who has our backs; one candidate has a knife at our backs.

And the one holding the knife to the backs of the working middle class is Obama! He is nowhere around as my husband and I are trying to get our business off the ground and into profitability - except to collect as much in taxes as he can to squander on his gimme programs.

Let's get this very clear, Romney did NOT release a complete tax return for 2010, parts referring to foreign acconts were missing.

I bet it will be the same for 2011.

Mitt Romney must be hard-pressed by letting his wife campaign for him. I understand that Mrs. Romney has Multiple Sclerosis (MS) which is a very serious disease of the nervous system which can be physically and mentally extremely devastating to her health! Anxiety or undue pressure can cause Mrs. Romney to have an MS attack and potentially be devastating to her health or life! What kind of man, I use "man" loosely in Mitt Romney's case, would put his wife's health and life at risk for his personal political gain???

I'm sure Ann Romney is intelligent enough to know what she is capable of doing and I don't think she has to ask permission from Mitt Romney to do anything. As for you suggesting he is "forcing" her to campaign, that may be the way things go in your household, but from where I sit, not in the Romney's. They seem equal partners, through and through. Are you "liberal's so desperate to re-elect an incompetent fool, you will now accuse Mitt Romney of trying to kill his own wife? You are one sick puppy. Get help immediately!

No victims, Mr. Obama? What about the millions who've lost jobs under your tenure? What about the 50% of college grads who can't find jobs? I'd call them victims of a failed government policy. Yeah, blame it all on Bush, that's what you usually do. But the fact is, my company has lost over 50% of its work force since you took office, and it's as a direct result of your policies, not Bush's. You bet there are plenty of victims out there, and there'll be even more if you're reelected.

I just heard a very eliquent and knowledgable Tuskeegee Institute graduate from inner City Chicago, who worked to help both Shirley Chisholm and Mayor Harold Washington get elected, state that his recognition of the Democrat Party as being "the biggest element" responsible for the destruction of Black Americans was what led to his turn around and switch to supporting and becoming a true conservative.

He said the Democrat Party has stood by and watched Black Americans fall by the wayside, deeper and deeper into decline.

An awesome commentary by an awesome American!

Adler, if you were actually listening to Romney's comments you would have known he was NOT talking about people like you who worked hard for a living. As for Ryan being booed by the AARP it's because the AARP is in the "tank" for Obamacare. What did you expect? However, I applaud Ryan for having the guts to get up there and tell the truth about what is happening to our system. To bad the audience is living in neverland to understand they won't have anything left after Obama gets through with them. Remember, he was the only one who STOLE 716 billion dollars from Medicare to pay for Obamacare! Start thinking with your brains Adler.

He simply said that the 47% of the people will not vote for him, which is probably true. Most of the AARP, welfare collecters, and people like them will not want their benifits lessend. The workers that are tired of hi taxes, and government waist, will vote for Romney. They are the other 47%, that will not vote for Obama, because of all the things he has done. I am all for what Obama said that do change the Government you can only do it from the outside, I wish he would follow is own advise and quit and then try to change it where it matters in his own mind, and let Romney change the Government for the better.
