House Speaker John Boehner suggested Friday that Mitt Romney's difficulties in Ohio might be attributable, ironically, to the success of the state's Republican governor.
Boehner, the Republican from southwestern Ohio, praised the work Gov. John Kasich, who has presided over a decreasing unemployment rate in the Buckeye State (though that's partly attributable to a shrinking labor force).
Recommended: Obama's battleground advantage grows
But the speaker suggested, too, that Obama might be benefitting in the key swing state of Ohio from perceptions that the economy has improved.
"One of the things that probably works against Romney in Ohio is that Governor Kasich has done such a good job of fixing government regulations in the state, attracting new businesses in the state so our unemployment in Ohio is lower than the national average," Boehner said in response to a question from NBC News at his press conference on Capitol Hill.
"As a matter of fact, I think it's a full point lower so as a result people are still concerned about the economy and jobs in Ohio but it certainly isn't like what you see in some other places," the speaker added.
Obama led Romney, 50 to 43 percent, among likely voters in Ohio in last week's NBC News-Marist-Wall Street Journal poll.

What exactly has Kasich done to make the lives of Ohioan's better? Nothing!!!
Did he rescue that plants heavily dependents on auto parts manufacturers? No!!!
So by blaming it on the fact that the economy is getting better (and wrongfully attributing to the wrong person), doesn't change the fact that Romney's losing because of Romney!!!!
Romney's campaign is doing an OKAY job.... but Romney's is campaign's biggest problem.. ask Peggy Noonen or David Frum (2 of heavy weight conservative thinkers).
Kasich has done nothing. He is taking credit for what Obama has done for Ohio's economy. Another problem with Romney's campaign, besides Romney himself, is that their arguments against Obama are so over the top that no one believes them anymore. And the peppered lies in between the negativity doesn't help give them any credibility. So what is a voter to do? He'll go with his gut instinct and vote for the caring, honest guy who saved and created lots of jobs in Ohio and makes home brew. That's what the gut will tell most Americans on November 6th.
The Ohio recovery started before Kasich took office in 2011.
In Kasich's 20 months in office he has actually accomplished very little to create jobs (the auto industry credit does not belong to him).
He has given away more in tax breaks to companies to get them to stay here that our state will get back in revenues anytime soon. The only place he can point to for success is in the Fracking business.
He paid off the $8 billion budget shortfall by selling off profitable revenue creators and taking an extremely long term loan – looks great on the books but leaves us in deep long-term debt and private business getting the revenue generating departments.
Hysterical to think that Romney is polling lower because of the governor of the State. If that were the case UTAH would be tossing our electoral votes to the President. Spin it again Boehner . . . .
I wish Boehner would come stand in my garden.
He could water it with his tears and fertilize it with the bovine excrement spewing from his word hole!
P.S. Rombot.Has.Nothing. (and it's all Kasich's fault)
Under our Tea Party Governor Paul LePage, and his Republican majority legislature, Maine is the only New England state not to see a drop in unemployment in the past two years. The Republicans lowered taxes for the wealthiest and are trying to cut 20,000 Mainers off Medicaid. The usual Republican agenda.
President Obama is winning re-election here handily.
A bumpersticker I saw the other day : Time to turn le page.
Yeah, giving American voters credit...that's called ticket splitting..Americans want fiscal conservatives to fix mess at the state level, but an enlightened stateman (Pres. Obama) to fix our nation's woes.
FORWARD....
Romney's campaign is on life support. All Boehner is doing is giving Romney's incompetent campaign a post-mortem before is has been officially declared dead.

Let's be honest, the auto bailout that Obama did actually lost jobs in Ohio. He has done nothing but pour money into this state with a lot of bad investments that now affect all of us.
JERSY GIRL - you epitomize the saying "it is better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak and erase all doubts."
President Obama's auto bailout DID NOT lose jobs in Ohio. Come up with another lie - this time try to make it believable!
Obama/Biden 2012
Well I am not sure, Seeking, where you got your info from. Mine came from friends who actually LIVE in Ohio not talking points from a political party. Maybe you should continue seeking.
That is exactly the point at which your argument failed, Jersey Girl. You're a pathological liar.
If I had the power I would trade my state gov (Rick Scott) for any other in the country. Amy, that even includes that one you have in Maine. You take Gollum and I'd take your guy. At least I wouldn't have to see the non-stop commercials about how Gollum is strengthening education when he is actually stripping schools bare. Let's just pretend we have this power; is it a deal?
JERSY GIRL,
I've lived in Ohio since the 1940's (actually worked as a quality auditor in the auto industry from 2001 – 2004) and I can tell you that today the Auto industry is stronger and employs more people than any time since 2006.
I think John Kasich has earned his predicament himself. As well as Michelle Bachman, Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, Boehner, all republicans. And especially Willard Romney who won't even use his first name. Why is that. Shouldn't we be saying Willard Mitt? Isnt' that what the repubs did. They for some reason rode into office thinking they could say and do what they pleased and everyone would just sit and say heil. I hope between what they have done and the candidate that Romney is will show our entire country what these people are up to and say kick them out, take our country back, get rid of Citizens United, and make our country great again. We don't need these incompetent blimps or whatever they are in office. Anywhere!
And there hasn't been any notice of Romneys tax refunds. They said he did an average of 13%. Apparently they are not math majors. If 2011 are 14that means to average one has to be 12. If one is 20 like I think they said one or more has to be much less like ever 7 so that goes down to 6%. I guess they didn't think anybody knew how to do averages. Or they don't know what average means. Wouldnt surprise me! And we are supposed to trust them. All rigth you have given us the average so show us the rest. No surprises! Right. Getting closer for someone to say I know what is in there. I know what is in there.
G.M. is alive and Osama is dead and Ohio citizens know the difference, Good.
Jerseygirl, Lordstown, Ohio. G.M. Look it up. Scheduled to close it is now open with two shifts. You really need to STFU unless you find the truth.
what?
Let's talk about those chairs hanging in trees! First we must ask the question, who has the most to gain by stirring up racial hatred? You guessed it, Obama! With race relations inflamed the black race is more apt to go to the polls and vote!
So who really hung those chairs up in a tree? Was it some misguided people with a bad sense of humor? Or, was it some cold calculating Democratic operative? If we see more of this nonsense in the coming days we will know! The Democrats have a lot to gain by stirring up racial tension!
They have used this tactic in every election because it works! Boy, was old Bill Clinton surprised when Obama used it against his wife in their primary! I guess that Obama was better at it then Bill! All that practice in the inner cities I guess!
Since it is the right wing beating the drum of racism, and since it is the right wing who are dancing to the beat, it's an impossible leap of logic and sanity to blame President Obama for your party's agenda of hatred, bigotry, and exclusion. If it is not working for you and your party, then stop it.
"First we must ask the question, who has the most to gain by stirring up racial hatred?"
Racist Tea Party Republicans.
Let me quote Obama," America is too old and to white", Americas military is filled at the upper echelons with old white men"! That doesn’t sound racist does it?
1) Obama bailing out Detroit helped manufacturing jobs in Ohio also.
2) How much of Ohio pension funds has Kasich got and paid back to those he lost at Lehman Brothers?
Boners gonna get his walking papers to . People are sick of his sh,it
Living in Ohio, I can attest to the governor having done NOTHING for Ohio!! The reason the numbers went up? More people are waking up from their GOP coma and finding out they are all liars. Increasing numbers of those living in Ohio are having to depend on some form or other of aid, and Romney just made it clear what he thinks of people in that position. It's the "true" GOP mindset coming through loud and clear!! Mr. Speaker needs to go as well. He makes me physically ill.
Sorry johnny b, you can sling it all you want, but the folks in Ohio are not stupid, they know without the auto industry they would have been sunk, and they know who opposed the rescue of the greatest industry this country has ever know, your party that's who - sure was not you or your governor who supported it or the workers.
The real problem for Mitt is that you are known by the company you keep, and Mitt's constant companionship with the 1% tells at least 47% or more of us that we are mear slaves to him and his little band of greedy theives.
Yep. The job increases are directly attributable to the decision to save the auto industry.
ht tp ://midwest.chicagofedblogs.org/archives/auto_industry/
Any day now Romney will declare himself as a Progressive.
On Univision... he declared himself the grandfather of Obama-care and says he's proud of it... .dude can't stick on any issue.
And his running mate got bood by the AARP for not advocating "Obamacare".
Understandably, AARP back Nobama Care there in bed with that health care joke. Nobamajoke!!!!
"One of the things that probably works against Romney in Ohio is that Governor Kasich has done such a good job of fixing government regulations in the state, attracting new businesses in the state so our unemployment in Ohio is lower than the national average," Boehner said in response to a question from NBC News at his press conference on Capitol Hill."
Hey, I'm fluent in Boehner, so allow me to translate: "Here in Ohio, where the auto industry is doing well, the Republican governor gets all the credit. But in New Jersey, where the unemployment rate is one of the highest in the country, it's still all Obama's fault!"
Sorry, that's not irony - it's pretzel logic. With extra mustard.
Ford pulled themselves out of their nose dive with no help from Obama!
G.M. on the other hand used the government bailout to build 11 new plants in China! G.M wanted to buy back the shares of stock that the government holds and was told no by the Obama White house!
Steve sounds like one of those 25 year olds sitting in a GOP "war-room" monitoring news feeds and blogs and trying to "shape" perspectives and spin discourse. I saw an article about you guys cutting and editing little snippets of dialogue to twist the democratic message and then blasting your little doctored clips out to the news feeds. Just think, a bunch of snot nosed brats are causing all this grief in political discourse today.
No it's the Snotnosed Liberals spewing lies about the tea party and puffing up Nobama, that's the problem.
You may wanna check the facts - GM is flailing in a bad way....kinda goes hand-in-hand with the Obummer bumper sticker......."GM is Alive and bin Laden is Dead"
GM is broke and the Middle East is on fire.........
Atta boi Obummer!
GM stock is doing just fine in the last three months but don't take the market analyst's word, take M1969's instead.
LOL.....wow....thank God you're only on FR and not in charge of any part of our economy!!
GM stock has plummetted since it went public after becoming Govenment Motors (Nov 2010 $34....September 2012 $24) Yep, awesome portfolio if you're lucky enough......foreign ditz
Today they just announced a 500,000 vehicle recall!...WOOT WOOT!
http://www.forbes.com/sites/louiswoodhill/2012/08/15/general-motors-is-headed-for-bankruptcy-again/
....and now there's talk of ANOTHER GM bankruptcy!....yep.....tell me more of your "market analyst"....lol
M19699
No problem, here ya go. My link is as of today, yours ... over a month ago.
www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/gm/analystestimates
A - I never asked for a stock quote
B- If your investment choices are made based solely on a 3 month snapshot of a stock price, you took away all doubt I had as to why the sum total of your existance is on FR wishing you were an American Citizen, particpating in our government affairs and not your own!
USA Baby!
The only source for the claim that GM is going broke is an opinion piece in Forbes written by Louis Woodhill. For perspective, Mr. Woodhill is on the Executive Board of the Club for Growth. Yep, this is the same organization that even Mike Huckabee referred to as "the Club for Greed."
A few things he forgot to mention in the article: earnings last Quarter were up 48%; earnings per share last Quater were $0.95/share for a ratio of approx 4% as I write this (which if extrapolated and maintained would mean a 12% in earnings in a year); and he forgets about the world market (because he focuses on the US only). Further, he only quotes car review sources to somehow support his argument that GM will not continue to progress in development (he portrays GM as sitting still in R&D while other companies move forwards).
GM is currently considered a "moderate buy."
Funny how a "non American Citizen" knows more about our government and economic workings than you do Michael.
Michael1969
A - there is more to that link than just a stock quote
B- There are only three ways for me to participate in your gov. affairs ... work for it, contribute money to a party or vote. I do none of those. Stop worrying about me Michael, as I said before, concentrate on offshore money finding its way into superpac coffers.
Matthew-2771918
This is not the first time I have been referred to that article ... it is treated as gospel by the haters of GM.
BCWC - the article is seriously flawed, starting with the initial comparison of a single stock to the entire market performance. Much more accurate would have been a comparison of a stock to its respective sector but even that has to be taken with a HUGE gain of salt because of many factors.
Michael-
Check your own facts. All of the extra workers and shifts at the GM plant in Lordstown, Ohio that makes the Chevy Cruz don't think GM is "flailing". I am sure all the parts suppliers for the Chevy Cruz, most of whom are also in Ohio, also disagree with your assessment.
It may come as a surprise to you, but not everyone judges a company's success on their stock ticker.
Another way to cross reference how the auto industry is doing is by checking "Delphi Automotive." They are the world's largest supplier of car parts. Following supply chain systems is a logical (and successful) method of anticipating growth or decline (remember to factor in cyclical behaviors). Delphi Automotive was a spin off of GM.
Delphi hit an all time high this morning.
Romney suffering in Ohio. Headline should end there. Who cares why? At the end of a football game the only thing that matters is the scoreboard.
Let' all talk the first wednesday on november.
It isn't that he's less popular, it's that his appeal is becoming more selective...
The Speaker is obviously a closet "This is Spinal Tap" fan...
Oh, my gosh, Boehner must be suffering delusional hysteria. How desperate are republicans? Well, read what Boehner said. It's Kasich's fault that Romney isn't doing better. Really? It couldn't be that Mitt Romney is running a bad campaign or that perhaps President Obama is running a better one, or perhaps voters recognize the deep economic hole was dug by the GOP from 2001-2008 and also recognize that, while not healed completely, Obama has the country headed in the right direction. Ohio is doing so much better economically, not because of anything Kasich has done, but because of the auto industry thanks to President Obama. Boehner knows that is the truth. Those auto jobs then create and save other jobs. I believe the numbers I saw was that every single auto industry job, impacts 8 others either by creating or saving them.
There must be a toxin in Boehner's tanning cream.
Xabre
That might be Romney's problem also as they seem to be sharing the same tanning bed.
Boehner is delusional to think that every State is doing horribly under President Obama. Utah, the horrible OMG can we work with the President on Welfare Reform, is doing quite well. We have used stimulus monies here and between those and the tax cuts, business is booming, unemployment is down and our State is working WITH the President and NOT against him. Of course, you won't see that at the polls and you all know why! ;-)
Obama/Biden - moving forward!
Wow, how obtuse can the Orangeman get??
Speaker Boehner, the success in Ohio is directly related to two factors.
1) Government stepped in and saved the auto industry, which saved over 100,000 jobs in Ohio alone.
2) President Obama's push for green energy and moving away from oil has resulted in an increase in natural gas production. It's cleaner than oil and coal. This is a reason that T. Boone Pickens was campaigning for President Obama in 2008. (Resulted in Republicans attacking Pickens for criticizing oil).
President Obama even asked the private sector how he could help with compressed natural gas fueling stations. They said to let the private sector do the work. He listened and summer 2013, thousands of more compressed natural gas fueling stations will come on line. Businesses are already purchasing trucks that are fueled by natural gas, saving their businesses over $10K per vehicle per year.
Those trucks being purchased, are Made in America. Helping jobs in Ohio and many other states.
How can Repubs even look themselves in the mirror....they would need 2 mirrors they are so two-faced...but Americans aren't buying their BS.
Now Boehner is saying even if President Obama is elected they still won't even consider raising taxes on the wealthy....this is what President Obama has had to deal with from day 1....and he has still accomplished alot dispite Repub obstruction.
All the polls shows that Obama has already won so theres no point for the republicans to show up LOL
Losers weepers
People of Ohio please do yourselves proud and vote the orangeman out of office. Boehner has been in there way too long. You are doing much better in Ohio thanks to President Obama and considering that your guy, Boehner has led the efforts to block everything the President has tried to do you need to let him know that blocking progress isn't what Ohioans want.
I live in Ohio and Kasuck sucks as governor, but he's been awfully quiet since his SB5 bill was crushed by the voters in the last election. I only wish I could vote the boneheader out of office. He's from southwestern Ohio in the heart of Republican territory in this state. If only we could redistrict him to NE Ohio.
I moved to SW OH, from the east, in the late 90's. Nipp299, I totally agree that this area is the 'heart of Republican territory in this state'... otherwise known as tea party central. People here tend to be sheep that stubbornly cling to 'republican values' even (especially?) when it's NOT in their best interest (duh) cause that's what their 'papaw' voted. Because this area has always been mostly a stable economy, most can't imagine struggling much, so are obsessed with designer handbags or a big SUV to impress the other sheep while complaining that they're broke and racking up their credit cards. I saw the repo trucks every w/e in my neighborhood during the financial crash. Most of the real estate problems in OH were from those who were so dumb and superficial that they HAD to buy a house that was WAY out of any reasonable idea of what they could really afford. Btw, there's a very strong racist element; don't let them tell you otherwise.
Kasick's SB5 was a vicious attack on teachers and an obvious attempt to weaken any and all collective bargaining. I only wish I lived in Boehner's district so I could vote against him when the chance comes. Kasick's done nothing positive for this state and yes.. he's been quiet (sneaky) while trying to force through pieces of SB5 in other legislation.... he's scum.
The happiest thought is for all these repukes/teabaggers to be voted out as soon as their terms are up; that includes Boehner, Walker, Daniels, McConnel, Kasich... get the whole bunch out of office... their 1% masters don't need that kind of power to rape the country.
I agree with Debbie 525743.
I also heard Cleveland State University developed a windmill
that does the job of 4 windmills on just 11 mile/hour winds. I'm sure the Oil
and Gas Company will lobby to kill this. They want to sell natural gas to the
electric company not wind. I still remember when they killed the electric car the first time.
Nancy Pelosi is right in asking Boehner to get things done rather than kick it down the road to the next Congress. People of Ohio do your duty and replace the weeper of the House, John boehner.
No people of California get things done right and replace."we got to pass it to know what's in it", Nancy Pelosi!!!! What a joke!!! Along with Nobama! He's out of there this election!!!!
Stop trying to convince any Republican with math.. they live in a fact-free bubble..... "Things just keep getting curiouser and curiouser" -Alice In Wonderland
also if Boehner were in any Northern Ohio district he would be watching all this unfold from his tanning bed on Faux News. He definitely wouldn't ever get elected in any district north of Columbus.
Democrats vote Nov. 6 this year, republicans vote Nov. 7th.
Ohio's struggle to recover from the economic downturn is not just the credit of the GOP Governor. Obama has set the stage for reform and the Governor has had the good sense to follow through with jobs incentives and small business incentive and construction projects partially funded by the federal government.
" Ohio for Obama/Biden 2012"
Ruby, Obama is very good at setting the stage. He thinks he's the celebrity in chief.
Like all the other DEMS have said on this topic nice try Mr. Boehner but it's all because has tooooooo many OOPS MOMENTS as Rick Perry calls them.
What Boehner is saying is that Kasich must not have gotten the memo that he was supposed to be helping Republicans ruin the economy.
Yes. It was so kind of Gov. Kasich to take time out from his busy schedule of union crushing and voter suppression to save the entire U.S. auto industry, which was a major factor driving the recovery in Ohio and other "rust belt" states.
Uhhh....?
Romney showed us his taxes. That's what you wanted.
Now, I would like to see where Obama's stimulous money went.
Show us the money!
Why is it that you care about Romneys tax returns and not the zillions in stimulous money used to buy votes, pay off friends and end up in Swiss bank accounts?
Real simple there, Ray. In Florida the money is sitting in bank accounts making bankers richer. They'd rather the middle class get starved off then allow Obama any credit for the economy improve. And while we're at it, where ARE those returns? I was on Romney's site and he just lists his disclosure forms. Pretty darned convenient. No figure on what he actually paid in taxes, if anything. Oh, and it looks like he fudged on this years taxes and didn't claim all his deductions so the public wouldn't see that his tax rate would have been LESS THAN 10%!
Hey Huh it's so nice of your tax abilities to tell us all about what YOU think Mitt owes, how funny. You were on Mitt website, please go back to class!! And you know all about his 10% illegal deduction. Have a nother beer!! Your check is in the mail.
Gov. Kasich's success came from Obama's decision to save the auto industry. Boehner's comments reflect that the GOP would rather see this country suffer than succeed under President Obama.
LOL, succeed under Nobama's success, oh please that's the most rediculas line on this entire string on BS. Wow!! He hates success, you should know that, he's the one that wants to tax the millionaires, he's the one that wants to tax the businessmen in this country, he's the one thats destoying health care. Success under Obama, oh please what a joke!!
