Obama takes fresh swipe at Romney over '47 percent' comments

President Barack Obama took a fresh swipe at Mitt Romney Thursday over the leaked video that shows the Republican nominee dismissing 47 percent of Americans, saying the comments suggest Romney probably hasn’t “gotten around a lot.”

Obama made the remarks during an interview in Miami with Univision, the Spanish language network, a day after Romney had given an interview to the same network.

On Wednesday, moderator Jorge Ramos asked Romney to clarify what he meant on the tape. “Well, first of all this is a campaign about the 100 percent,” Romney said. “And over the last several years, you’ve seen greater and greater divisiveness in this country. We had hoped to come back together but instead you've seen us pulled apart. And politics has driven us apart in some respects. So, my campaign is about the 100 percent in America.”

While courting Hispanic voters on Univision, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney delivered a new message after saying he stood by his beliefs about the "47 percent." NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

On Thursday, Ramos asked the president: “For you, which is the true Mitt Romney?”

The president seized the opportunity to slam his opponent: “When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven't gotten around a lot.”

The president then argued that he has a better understanding of the country. “I travel around the country all the time and the American people are the hardest-working people there are. And their problem is not that they're not working hard enough or they don't want to work or they're being taxed too little or they just want to loaf around and gather government checks.”

Romney has been playing defense since the liberal magazine Mother Jones publicized remarks that were secretly videotaped at a Florida fundraiser in May. The video shows Romney telling an audience of wealthy donors that he isn’t concerned about getting the support of nearly half the country because they’re already Obama supporters who are dependent on the government and view themselves as victims.

For the most part, Romney has stood by his remarks, arguing that they highlight the difference between his economic views and the president’s. Romney has tried to paint the president as a big-government liberal; he recently pointed to a videotape from 1998 which shows then-state Senator Obama saying he supports a “redistribution” of wealth. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney suggested the Romney campaign was “desperate” for highlighting a 14-year-old video.

Still talking about this? And the dog? And all the other stupid things you think he's said since day one? Why not take the time to talk about all the nonsense that Obama has said since he began campaigning 4 years ago? Get a clue, no one cares, if this is all you have to talk about, you have nothing of substance to say. Slow weeks going in the news. Stupid journalists who spend all day talking about old news rather than the terrible things happening all around the world today. Grow up.

Yeah, Romney believing that 47% of Americans are freeloaders isn't important.

SORRY, but you are the one thats pathetic.

Show us your tax return Romney- this would who romney is speaking of. The bigest portion of NO tax, is the 2% at the top. So if thay don't have to pay taxes, why should the bottom? Romney only hurt america, when he has, double standereds. Top (like him) can slide on his taxes, but bottoms, are moochers. I'm guessing that you like to pay taxes, FOR THIS UPPER 2%. And that the country runs off of your back. GROW UP!!!

He cant show his tax returns because it would be an embarrassment. He probably got an earned income tax credit somewhere.

47%!!!!!!. What Romney, said, is true, BUT, He dismissedthe fact that, a big chunk of these people, were the 2% rich, that he was speaking to, who do not pay taxes, like himself. While watching and hearin his speach, he put down the middleclass, and the poor, and in the same breath, say,he did't care about the lower bracket, and will protect only the upper bracket.

He has,NO idea, how the bush crash, has hurt this country, only how it has helped the top 2%!!!!!!!!!! Romney should, come out of his richman shell, and see first hand, what, Bush, republican's, and himself has done.

Open a window, door, or even take a walk, in areas most hit by T/D affect it has on this country. Maybe he has and likes seeing, people, living in poverty, homeless, foodless, and depressed! I'm guessing, that Romney wants to not run for president, but for KING! America rejected this, when thay went to war in the 1700. Now Romney wants it back? Why? I guess IF he gets elected, He will want us to call him sirer" NO WAY IN HELL!!!!!!!"

Obama, born in Hawaii, takes the least amount of vacations. He has gone to Hawaii! You know. A lot of Dems are disappointed in Obama because according to them he doesnt spend enough time out there rubbing elbows with big donors and lobbyists. He would rather spend some quality time with his family making sure his kids get access to him ALSO.

Which people that get up and have to go to work everyday get the opportunity to support because it is our given duty to support those who do not work and it's their right for free housing, healthcare, and food. Don't forget the majority of African Americans that will give him their vote just because he's black.

That's what killed California. When Ronnie was governor there was 13 taxpayers or every person taxing state aid. That number is around 2 for 1 now :-(

The same thing is happening at the federal level. The majority of the taxes are paid by the top 10% of wage earners. Some of that is skewed by the recession and some the inequity of the tax system. I heard on a CNBC report yesterday that about 22% of American pay NO income tax and only payroll (SS) tax.

Romney point, in principal is correct. That is if you are beholden to the government would you really be willing to vote for somebody who wants to reduce or curtail handouts. That's the central concept about the Democrats push for ObamaCare. You'll always vote Democrat if you benefit from ObamaCare cause the other guys will try to kill it.

President Washington warned us about the dangers of political parties and wanted to ban them because he believed they divide loyalties, cause regional tensions and interfere with democracy and the proper running of the government. Boy was he ever right!

The only thing Romney revealed is the truth. The people that are dependent on the government to survive will never vote for him because the current administration prefers people to be dependent on them so they can control them. When people count on you for there every need they are not looking for a change.

The reality is that at some point the government is going to run out of money and the entitlement programs are going to go away, maybe not in the next 4 years but sooner rather than later. That is going to be a sad day in America whn the 47% show up to the gate of the White House with pitch forks demanding their checks.

We need a moderate in the White House that can broker deals between the two political parties. Romney's experience as the Governor of Massachusetts has shown that he is willing and able to make things happen and avoid the standard DC gridlock. Thats exactly what this country needs.
