NBC has obtained the entirety of the relevant remarks in the “redistribution” video the RNC has circulated. In the rest of the clip, Obama talks about the “marketplace,” decentralization and fostering “competition,” NBCNews.com’s Michael O’Brien reports.
He campaigns in Florida today and does the same Univision forum that Romney did yesterday.
Revisionist history? Did Obama really immediately regret his “bitter” comments in 2008? Not exactly. Here’s what he said in the immediate aftermath, as conservatives point out: "Now I didn't say it as well as I should have, because the truth is that these traditions that are passed on from generation to generation, those are important. That's what sustains us. … What is absolutely true is that people don't feel like they're being listened to. And so they pray and they count on each other and they count on their families. You know this in your own lives," Obama said. "What we need is a government that is actually paying attention, a government that is actually fighting for working people day in and day out, making sure that we are trying to allow them to live out the American dream. And that's what this campaign is about."
A conservative writer for the New York Daily News picks up on Obama saying this on Letterman about the $16 trillion in national debt (via Real Clear Politics): “We don't have to worry about it short term.” Obama did add, “But we do have to worry about it long term.” The president also said, “I don’t remember the number precisely.”

NBC FR, give me a brake. Have you counted how many negative FR reports against Romney and how many for Obama.
In this report, how convenient that Obama could have said what he said in 1998 different.
Where is the entire tape of the Romney 47% comment. Even Fox is more balance than you NBC.
You do realize the entire tape of Romney's comments has been released Concern Citizen. The problem is, the entire tape only makes it worse for Romney. Where as the entire tape of President Obama from 14 years ago puts it in a context that is favorable to President Obama. See the full truth favors Democrats, while lies favor republicans.
You kidding Concern Citizen. The Romney campaign head quarters (Fox) balanced. I'll have to give Fox (Romney campaign head quarters) credit, they are balanced at lying.
M0-681343 - I guess you did not see that some of the tape is missing. I was looking at in one of your libs media when the person apologized for it. Google it.
Hey Mo, you indicate that the entire tape only makes things worse, but you didn't back up your statement with any facts, and as far as that goes, only worse in who's estimation ? Hate to imply that you might not have seen the entire thing yourself, or that you might be biased one way or the other, especially after you referred to Rebublican lies and all, but why don't you back your contention with facts and let the rest of us make our own descision ?
What we need to fix first in this economy is sales growth and job growth. While the national debt continues to climb (as it has since 1930), we are borrowing money at 0% interest (10 year T-bill) to finance the increase. How can we borrow at 0% interest? The rich have no better use for this money than keeping it safe (better than under a mattress).
The rich have too much money (24% of nation's income now, up from 10% in 1980). They usually invest it in growing businesses, but they don't need to do that since sales are so sluggish. Sales are so sluggish because the top 1% have taken 14% of what was our share (in 1980) and stuck it in their pocket. Tax cuts and increased share of productivity growth have fueled this increase in their income.
Exporting jobs also increases their income and puts downward market pressure on worker wages. The rich love this trend, but they are too caught up in their success to realize that their gains have come at the expense of the American worker that had made America such a great place to sell their stuff and make their profits.
This vast redistribution of wealth to the top 1% from 1980 levels (10% of nation's income) to now (24%) has caused the economy to suffer as the middle class is buried in debt and can no longer borrow from the rich to keep the American market what it used to be. Thus we all suffer from slower economic and wage growth as the result of the rich's greed. But it is more than just greed, it is about winning the game for many of these rich people, it is about being admired by people.
Rich man, if you want my admiration, share your wealth with the middle class and realize that your actions do affect our economy (you take almost 1/4 of all income, and own almost half of all American wealth).
I have little hope that rich men would share their wealth to return our economy to that healthy equilibrium where there is enough investment to meet increased sales and enough sales to increase investment.
This is the formula for a healthy growing economy and if our government needs to intervene in the market place to make this happen, I'm all for it. This is the essence of an intelligent distribution of wealth. Trickle down economics rigged the game for the rich. Now, it is time to return it to a healthier equilibrium.
Concerned, thanks for your comment. You may have missed that yesterday we did, in fact, post the full video and transcript of the Romney closed-door fundraiser tape here after independently confirming and obtaining the video: http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/09/18/13943563-full-video-and-transcript-of-leaked-romney-fundraiser-remarks?lite
And we pointed out the left out comments here (this morning in just a couple of posts above this one): http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/09/20/13986003-first-thoughts-a-more-moderate-mitt-returns?lite
Thanks, as always, and hope you continue to read First Read.
Domenico, I have'nt been posting this summer, but have been paying some attention to 1st Read. My question is to yall is Why are'nt yall posting something & Reporters asking Mitt about Mitt's Mom Video saying her Husband & Mitts Dad was on on Welfare early on in his Life & her saying Good things about this Great Country, we call America?
It's astounding that yall disregard this with all that has been going on about Mitt's secret video tape, where he says Americans feel they're Victims!
Was his Dad a "Victim", as Mitts words would suggest?
Whazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzup Up with that?
You Betcha!
Occupy SoggyBottom!
See the truth shall set you free Concern Citizen.
True, Mo, but one must have the necessary intelligence to interpret the data correctly! ; )
my mom used to say: "The truth will set you free, but it's gonna piss you off at first."
"We can have democracy in this country, or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both."....Justice Louis Brandeis
So, another Romney lie dies of exposure. He'll soon have another one.
So much for the anybody but Romney primaries and the dufusses that he beat out for the nomination. Now the Republican Party is stuck with someone who will only attract dyed in the wool Republicans and not much else.
...Vote for @Lien Trinh, most intelligent Democrat!!!
Excellent. Now can you post Obama's statements, made over the live mic, asking the Russian Ambassador to inform Mr. Putin that he'll have more "flexibility" if re-elected, to further disarm us. Now there's a comment that should get a lot of attention.
.... MITT THE TWIT needs to stand for what he believes ... he will inform us IF and WHEN he ever figures that out .... FLIP FLOP FLIP FLOP .... what a dummy ... all the red states in the "47%" and they are just too stupid that mitt-da_twit was speaking of them at his $50,000.00/plate dinner .... imagine .... and they just dont get it !!!
