What I always find amazing is that people who obviously aren't rich seem to think that they are rich and that their nonexistent wealth is being confiscated and given to poor people. No one is confiscating wealth and giving it to poor people. 80% of the people in this country are comparatively poor. The vast majority of that 80% are not being given a check. Otherwise the 1% wouldn't have been making money hand over fist for the past 30 years, while the bulk of americans have gone to the poorhouse.

Sorry peeps, but the real answer is that we have to have some capitalism, and some socialism in our economy to keep things fair and even. For those of you who think that socialism doesn't work, please pull your head out of the sand and look at several of the countries there that do just that. Look at the Skandinavian countries, and Denmark. Those people pay half of their salaries in taxes, and in return, they get a free place to live, free utilities, and free healthcare. Now think about the average American, and how much of their salary they pay to get those 3 things here. I'm willing to bet it is more than 50% of their salary, on average. BTW, these countries (at least the Skandinavian ones faired this global recession much better than most of the rest of the world).

Also realize that those same Skandinavian countries hire the best teachers right out of college at a payscale the equivalency of about $100,00/year, and their kids, on average, learn 3-5 foreign languages, and end up smarter than our kids. The models are out there to follow, since we are in no position to lead (educationally, and in many other areas), due in part ot our screwed up political system and those who trample it.

Sadly, too many of you do not kinow the difference between socialism, and communism, and come to the wrong conclusions. You can all me all of those ridiculous names, but in the end, you are only fooling yourself.

The whole discussion is, frankly, nonsense. First of all this was 14 years ago. President Obama isn't the same person he was 3+ years ago, let alone, 14. I know that topics like 'pool resources' and 'wealth redistribution' are red cape to bull phrases for the Ann Randian crowd that has co-opted the GOP.

The fact is that any society, even Paul Ryan's idea of conservative heaven on earth will 're-distribute' wealth. Whether a government service is funded by use taxes, consumption tax, property tax, or income tax, the services that are funded benefit a broader base of Americans. Roads are used by rich and poor alike. Air Traffic safety, the same. The U.S. military doesn't just defend our society for the Rich... This is all pooling resources (collective benefit) and wealth re-distribution folks.

What seems to stick in some peoples craw is the idea that the society will reach into some of our pockets (via taxes on the what we buy, earn, or own) and, actually, give some of this wealth to people who need food, or who have worked their entire lives and are now drawing social security, or poor women who have young children that they can not afford to feed properly.

Or even worse, that the society provides assistance to buy health care insurance so that the un/under insured don't end up in Emergency Rooms (the most expensive healthcare delivery model) where the costs are passed on to the rest of the healthcare consumers (i.e All of Us). I guess we prefer that the poor get 'free' healthcare from the hospitals that we all pay for. Because, helping them get insurance is wealth re-distribution.

Try looking at many of the recent polls where Obama is beating Romney on questions concerning women, the middle class, the economy (believe it or not), immigration, and as you pointed out foreign affairs. If the Republicans hadn't been so obstructive, this would be a different dynamimc for this election. Romney picking Ryan, a Congressman, when Congress has such a low rating, hasn't helped him with the rest of America, but nailed it for conservatives. Obama has been given as pass on so much because he inherited a huge mess that nobody knew how big it was until it was too late. Then obstruction given to defeat almost any attempt to help the economy, has really looked bad. He may get 4 more years, but it won't have the insanely bad outcomes I see posted here and elsewhere. Republicans need to get over their notion of 'personal resposibility" since most of us see it for what it really is....code for every man for himself, which virtually by definition is anarchy, and there is no unifying message in anarchy.

The most remarkable aspect of the now widely watched video of an "off-the-cuff" Romney, paradoxically enough, was just how unremarkable his recorded comments really were.

Sure, Romney managed to slur as parasitic all those who feel there is a human right to food, health care, and housing. Sure, Romney revealed his intention as president would be to obstruct peace in the Middle East. And sure, Romney even threw in a racist joke to boot. But how is any of this particularly surprising? How else does one think the elite speak of the working class, Palestinians, and minorities at their clandestine fundraisers?

Of course, all of this is not to say that Romney's ill-advised candor won't haunt him. It assuredly will. After all, in the U.S. two-party system—as Romney himself correctly noted—the political campaign is nothing more than a marketing campaign. It is about crafting a marketable brand and then raising the necessary funds from the gatekeepers amongst the ruling elite to peddle it all to the American electorate. It, like all branding, is about creating the most compelling illusion: whether that is the Obama illusion of "hope," or the Romney illusion of "restoring America."

But the truth—of which there is plenty to be found in the leaked Romney video—destroys illusions. The self-deception necessary for one to embrace any illusion is thwarted by any insertion of reality. And this was Romney's greatest sin: to be caught speaking the sordid truth amid a campaign based on perfecting the art of deceit.

The latest self-implosion of the über-capitalist Romney, however, hardly signals a victory for all those below the upper echelons of the economic elite. Lest we forget, the reason political campaigns are based on marketing (i.e., the practice of trying to get people to buy what they neither need nor really want) is because both parties share the same agenda. They're in essence selling the same defunct product, albeit adorned with slightly different colored glosses.

The true political battle in the two-party system, then, is fought out amongst the power elite over which candidate offers the most effective vehicle through which to enact their agenda. And it is clear in this respect that the power elite are once again beginning to circle back around to Obama. This process was well underway prior to the leaked Romney video, evidenced in that August saw Obama out raise Romney on the back of large contributors for the first time in four months.

It ought, though, to be no surprise to see the elite come back home to Obama. As Glen Ford has rightly argued, Obama is not so much the lesser evil, but the "more effective evil." That is, Obama has proven to be the best face for American capitalism—the most reliable curator for the interests of American capital. The articulate, black, charming, and ostensibly liberal Obama has demonstrated in four years to be the best man to lead the coming frontal assault on Social Security, Medicare, and public education. Just as Obama has proven over four years of indefinite detention and expanded drone warfare to be a most adept administrator of U.S. imperialism.

Romney, on the other hand, has demonstrated time and again much the opposite. A highly affluent man who belittles half the country as parasites and speaks on his joy of firing people, it ought to be clear, will struggle to sell "entitlement reform" to a public still cherishing the remnants of a social safety net. Likewise, a man who alienates allied nations on trips abroad and bungles an international crisis (as was seen in Romney's initial response to the Benghazi attack) is not likely to serve as an effective administrator of the American imperial project. In short, Romney's ineptitude has proven to be a potential liability for the power elite. Hence, Mitt is toast.

Taking a speech from fourteen years ago out of context is just like Paul Ryan's speech at the GOP convention which implied that an automobile plant was closed during the Obama Administration but failed to mention that the closure was scheduled months BEFORE Obama took office. Obama said he believes in redistribution plain and simple. The fact he may have mentioned competition and the market as part of an economy doesn't take away from the fact he is ok with the redistribution of wealth which most disagree with. Republicans and Conservatives have always said they believe there needs to be safety nets but that the government should not be in the business of taking from group to give to another. The rich redistribute wealth all the time when they increase their share of a company's profit while paying their workers less. This is part of the explanation for how they have increased their share of the nation's annual income from 10% in 1980 to 24% now. It is a perfectly legal thing for them to do. Last year they increased their income another 13% while workers saw their income essentially stay the same.

Productivity growth historically has led to higher worker wages and higher profits, shared relatively equally. Now , profits take closer to 3/4 of this productivity gain and leave workers with closer to 1/4. The rich are redistributing the wealth. The top 1% now owns 42% of all wealth in America. When will their greed ever end?

Luckily, our Founding Fathers had a solution for this problem that they also experienced at the hands of the King and his Lords. "No taxation without Representation" was one of their slogans. It meant that they wanted a say in how the government allocated the tax burden (taxes also redistribute wealth). The mercantile policies of the English government also angered our Founding Fathers. They allowed their companies to exploit the colonies for their own profit.

One man, one vote in our democracy in 1793, gave the power to the middle class to send their representatives to Washington to pursue policies that benefited the middle class. This is how it was designed to work.

Now, we have the new Kings and Lords (the top 1%) who are using their vast money to extend their economic and political power, so they can redistribute even more wealth into their pockets. For 30 years, every recession became an excuse to give more tax cuts to the rich. It has only served their interests and has not done what Reagan said trickle down economics would do, increase tax revenues through tax cuts. Tax cuts for the rich were supposed to spur economic growth so much that workers would benefit with more jobs and higher wages and the resulting growth would increase tax revenues producing a balanced budget.

But the only thing trickle down delivered was more for the rich.

So how does competition plus marketplace equal redistribution? Wait I know, Obama's opinion was still evolving.

This just goes to prove that BOTH parties are exposed in the digital age. You make a comment to a guy in line at the store- it's recorded. You give a speech to some donors- it's recorded. You take a run in the park- it's recorded.

Not only is everything you say and do recorded, but it's subject to cutting and distribution by those against you. Oh my, Carter's grandson is ticked that his grandfather still used as the example of a failing President- so he gets a tape of Romney and edits it to the President's advantage and distributes it. Then Mother Earth posts the edited bits because they are in the tank for the President and when later pressed by the Romney campaign to release the entire tape- it disappears. The solution is quite simple: Release the entire old speeches you want people to see and give them a juicy intro- "In this 2007 speech, future President Obama states that he is for redistirbution of wealth while presenting his vision of the global economy to Loyola students...." It at least allows people the opportunity to review the entire moment and understand the context. Hey, if I was running for Congress and got cut off in a parking lot and uttered "jackass" at someone, would it be presented as Candidate Joe calls consituent "jackass" or Candidate Joe gets hot after almost being in an accident in a local parking lot. Kind of different views.

Just look at the campaigns, their supporters, and their websites. How many times have you heard of changing stories and revised websites. Funny how those "official" platforms and statements get changed in the middle of the night and denied (until someone comes out of the blue with a copy of the old website, etc. as proof it was different). The level of coverups is very disturbing.

Every voter should be concerned about this topic. If all you are fed in the mass media are bullet points and cut clips- what do you really know? You know what they want you to know- it's just an advertisement. As I've said before, the greatest problem is that most of the general public doesn't want to follow the election so they are perfectly happy to accept that 5 second clip and those bullet points as facts. The clarifications a day later or the rest of the article doesn't matter. The damage is done and they move on spreading fiction as facts. That's outright dangerous.

If Romney would have done that the poor would have bought drugs, booze, flat panels, and X-boxes and the money would have been wasted. Since he gives such a large amount to charity each year and his charitable trusts continue to grow his charitable legacy will, more than likely, out give what he would have if he had given all his wealth to the poor.

A reply to John Doe. GWB started his presidency with a surplus, Obama did not. What Obama got was 2 wars to pay for and the Bush tax cuts to help out with that. He got a prescription drug bill to pay for. He got a recession after GWB and the criminals on Wall Street tanked the economy. This resulted in record increases in unemployment benefits, food stamps, welfare and reduced tax revenue from lower sales from businesses and no payroll tax from the layed off workers. He also got a congress that plotted against him on the eve of his inauguration to destroy any efforts to fix the mess he was left with. He got the Middle East in conflagration over the imperialistic nation building foreign policy of the Bush administration hawks (or do you still think we should have invaded Iraq?) I do not mean to speak ill of the Dead, but Breitbart was a sensationalistic egomaniac who liked to evade questions by asking his own, off-topic, questions. He knew that reporters could ask questions based upon their sources, but could not give up those sources. So, he would often just repeat, "who said that?" or "who are we talking about?", knowing full well that the reporter would be stymied.
He was smart, I will give him that, but he was also laser focused on his own view and never did anything that could be called journalism. Fiction was more what he did. It was often compelling, but clearly manipulated. He often would admit that he was not unbiased and simply wanted his point made, no matter what he had to do to make it, be it lie, cheat or manipulate his way to that point.

Romney's donations to charity go entirely to the Mormon church. The Mormons help poor Mormons, but most of this "charity" goes to sending young mormons around the world trying convert people to Mormonism.

Also, you may want to use another argument than the "we all use roads" argument. Liberal claims that private industry could never create a highway system like the one we have is disproved by our vast interconnecting rail system which was built almost entirely by private industry using private industry funds -- at astronomical cost, no less. You know rail...it's what the federal government would now like us to use more of to transport goods because of the fuel efficiencies it provides. Add to that the fact that we already had interconnecting state highways and that a vast majority of road miles are built and maintained by state and local entities and one can see that the claim that we benefited greatly because the federal government got involved in building highways. As states coordinated their planned highway systems better with each other -- heck the feds could even facilitate that -- we would very likely have a very similar highway system to the one we have now only without the federal expenditure or control.

A graduated income tax system was one of the things that made America great in the first part of the 20th century.

Since we've essentially eliminated taxes on the rich and adopted trickle-down economics the country has faltered. It can't pay it's bills and goes deeper into debt because the rich won't pay their fair share.

If massive wealth is going to be concentrated in the hands of a few and the masses are going hungry and uninsured because they can't pay their bills - expect revolution and the heads of those who want to game the system for the wealthy to be stuck on the end of a long stick and carried through towns all over America.

The estate tax has been around since 1916. It was created expressly because of the actions of the Robber Barons. Today's Robber Barons like Romneyhood don't like it, but it is still serving its purpose of keeping the money circulating around the economy helping us 47%ers instead of sitting in bank vaults in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.

Governments have had estate taxes since the times of the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt. The Romans had estate taxes too.
