Michelle Obama, praising husband, urges young people in N.C. to vote

GREENVILLE, N.C. – First Lady Michelle Obama continued to embrace her role as President Barack Obama's chief character witness on Wednesday, telling thousands of young North Carolinians that her husband is an inclusive leader with compassion for all Americans.

"As president, you have to be driven by the struggles, hopes and dreams of all the people you serve," Michelle Obama told the 3,100 gathered at a rally in Durham, emphasizing the word "all."

"As president, you truly need a strong inner compass, you know, a core commitment to your fellow citizens," she said. "That's how you make the right decisions for this country."

She went on to tell the crowd that the president "has been struggling with us. And together, slowly but surely, we have been pulling ourselves out of that hole we started in."

The first lady did not mention GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney or Republicans during two rallies on college campuses in North Carolina. But her message drew a noticeable contrast with the recently-unearthed video of Romney telling supporters at a fundraiser that 47 percent of Americans do not "take personal responsibility" and "who believe that they are victims.” Romney conceded in the video that he is not reaching out to those voters because he cannot win their vote.

The Obama campaign jumped on the comments in a fundraising email. And Tuesday night, President Obama told David Letterman, "If you want to be president, work for everyone, not just for some." Vice President Joe Biden declined to answer questions about the former Massachusetts governor's remarks earlier this week.

Michelle Obama spoke to predominantly young and African American crowds at North Carolina Central University and East Carolina University.

She remained optimistic that the president could win the Tar Heel State in November, as he did four years ago, although polling shows him trailing behind Romney.

Not only did Obama encourage the college-aged crowd to vote, but she urged them to take advantage of the state's early voting that begins next month.

"Vote early. You know how you all are," she said, joking that young people have a habit of oversleeping or forgetting Election Day. A win in North Carolina, she said, would put the president on track to reelection.

"We cannot turn back now," the first lady said in Greenville. "We have come so far, but we have so much more work to do."

Spoken from a first class First Lady. Too bad the Romney's have no clue what that sentence means.

Looks like Mrs. wealth redistribution needs help.

Too bad nobody paid attention on 08 when he gave the country a peek at his socialist tendencies. Im shocked that the media is even reporting on the video if him practically reading from the communist manifesto.

Well said tonyb,

This First Lady and President are from working families that didn't get it all on a platter. Their families struggled, and so they understand the struggles of others.

Some rich folks can relate, but in the case of Mitt Romney, there is a disconnect from the experience of ordinary people. Romney is in it for the 0.01% - he is on the cusp of being part of that group himself.

After making it clear he has no use for half the American population, Romney repeated his derogatory statements about veterans, seniors and students, in which he said it is not is job "to worry about these people."

Romney and his campaign said they stand firmly by those insults, and their view of Americans as "victims" and freeloaders. Romney meant what he said, no matter what he says next, no matter how he tries to re-write the video.

My son is a Marine at Camp Lejeune, NC and he is going to vote for President Obama. In Mitt's fevered imagination, military personnel apparently are counted among the 47% who are going to vote against Etch-A-Sketch, but I have news for the GOP's #1 loser: United States Marines are not victims.

President Obama by default in November! There is no one running against him!

You be the Judge.

First Lady Michelle Obama, a pure classy and beautiful First Lady?

or Queen Anne, also known as Mitt Romney's Trophy Stepford wife?

Here's another Example:

Mitt Romney, known Liar, admitted Tax Cheat, and probable Felon,

who only Avoided those Felony charges by "RetroActively Retiring" while still CEO at Bain Capital,

(I did Not know you could "Retire RetroActively" on this or any other Planet, but I guess Mitt Romney can),

while still collecting Millions of dollars in Salary, while Legal papers clearly stated that Romney was Not the CEO at Bain Capital.

Is that Sick, or what?

or Barack Obama, the Kind, the Good, the Merciful?

Hey all you Federal Employees, Florida retirees, and still yet Undecided Voters,

let's send Mitt Romney and his GOP Republican Masters "Back to the Political Dung Heap of History",

where they all rightfully belong, by Voting a straight Democratic ticket come this November 2012.

It will be Fun and it's the Right thing to do.

ps. Is this a Great post, or what?

Whaaaaat ? Mrs. Obama has been the "spear" for Mr. Obama's agenda on just about all decisions which have certainly NOT been for ALL Americans. The only CORE COMMITMENT Mr. Obama has had is for his campaign contributors and special interest friends.

"We cannot turn back now," the first lady said in Greenville. "We have come so far, but we have so much more work to do."

Same Mr. Obama rhetoric he used at the DNC. Yep, gotta get 4 more years in office so he can complete his TRANSFORMATION of America. Notice the "WE (me and my husband) HAVE SO MUCH MORE WORK TO DO" in the last statement.

I wonder why Mrs. Obama didn't mention Mr. Obama's grandmother getting discriminated against at that Bank in Hawaii (matter of fact, she was appointed as one of the first women at the Bank to a senior position). Nah, wrong crowd.

Here are pictures on President's in uniform:

North Carolina will carry Romney. Obama is a good guy and a great spokesman, but we need Leadership that will help balance the budget. We need a President that will operate on a budget, and I don't believe this country forgets so easy. Remember when the first thing mentioned was, if the country shut down if the Armed Forces would be paid. Yeah, I remember that and a few hundred other things. Mitt for President.

Tommy...

You used the most important word of all "Leadership"....it's been absent for nearly four years. Presidents like Reagan and Clinton picked up the phone and spoke with politicians on the other side of the aisle when they needed to push for programs that they felt would help the country. They made friendships across the aisle and is THE reason they got things done...whether one personally agrees with those things or not.

Even in reading media supportive articles about the current president, it is very clear that he is a loner. He says what he wants to do and leaves it to Harry Reid or Nacy Pelosi to assign the job to their staffers to come up with a plan. He stays detached from the process in case the plan put forward by Reid's or Pelosi's office is a stinker. After barely even speaking with anyone in the other party...Mr. Obama then begins to insult them for simply not giving him anything he wants. We have seen this over and over again. That he is a president who has never even got a 'yes' vote from members of his own party on the budgets he has submitted while in office, it's pretty clear that he's even a loner within his own party.

Things would be different today had a "leader" like Reagan or Clinton been in the White House during the past four years.

It tales a whole lot of gall to stand in front of students and as for their vote when their is reasonable doubt that many of these students will find a job in their fiends if they find a job at all.

http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/27/one-in-two-new-college-graduates-i-jobless-or-underemployed/

The Associated Press reports:

About 1.5 million, or 53.6 percent, of bachelor’s degree-holders under the age of 25 last year were jobless or underemployed, the highest share in at least 11 years. In 2000, the share was at a low of 41 percent, before the dot-com bust erased job gains for college graduates in the telecommunications and IT fields.

http://money.cnn.com/2012/07/06/news/economy/black-unemployment-rate/index.htm

The unemployment rate for blacks rose to 14.4% from 13.6% in May, the Labor Department reported Friday. That's a sharp contrast to the white unemployment rate, which stayed put at 7.4%, and the Hispanic rate, which held at 11%.

The fact of the matter is that where Michelle can say anything she wishes to these young people the stats are quite clear. Obama has not encourage a favorable economic climate for her audience to seek and receive a job upon their graduation.

They can say that Obama has represented all Americans but then if you look at what he has done his record does not reflect that statement. At the very least these students should be aggressive enough to actually research what Obama has brought to the table for them and it is certainly not jobs.

The Obama's tour college campuses to perpetuate the story of their "under privileged" up bringing. Always failing to mention the privileged schools they attended. As is they know of life struggles. The Obama story is nothing but a fairytale of their own making. Liberals simply do not care, Obama promises them anything and everything and promotes taking from those that have to pay for those that have not. He says he believes in redistribution and that appears undeniable.

The media could care less, they ran with the story of a YouTube video inciting violence in the Middle East, and now ignore the fact it was known to be a lie before the administration decided to run with it. A vote for Obama is not because of what he has done, it for the hope of what he might do in spite of his history of not delivering on anything. Obama is nothing more then a product of the Mayor Daly build Chicago Political Machine, which is nothing less then the worst form of politics.

. . . urging the college students (a group of non-federal-income-tax-paying, entitlement-oriented, liberals) to register in the state where they attend school.

The legal age for voting is 18 [and all who qualify OUGHT TO vote] , whether you're a "non-federal-income-tax-paying, entitlement-oriented, liberal college student" or a non-federal-income-tax-paying, ignorant, non-GED conservative lay-about. Not all college students can get to their home district to vote, so it is perfectly LEGAL to register and vote in their college town/city. All politicians should be urging the populace to vote.

And your statement that "their parents will lose them as an IRS exemption when they do that." is totally FALSE!

[from The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law] Student Voting Guide | FAQ

When your parents claim you as a dependent, they get to take a $3500 tax deduction, which reduces the amount of income they get taxed on. Students are sometimes told that registering to vote will make it impossible for their parents to claim them as a dependent. This is simply not true.

You count as a qualifying child if you share the same principal place of abode with your parents for more than six months of the year, and you don't provide more than half of your own support. If you're temporarily absent from your principal place of abode for educational purposes, that absence isn't counted against the six months you need to live there.

I AM a logical thinker, and you are just ignorant!

You and your What-the-hell-is-going-on friend proved my point that it is the goal of the FLOTUS (Float-us?) and her husband to get students to register in the state where they are attending as out-of-state students (as long as it's a battleground state) to disenfranchise the permanent residents of the states. (By the way, they aren't going to post this strategy on Facebook for you to find it in your search engine). If you had any ability to think on your own instead of regurgitating Chris "Tingle-Boy" Matthews, you might get it. I'm not a tea-bagger, as the term implies a gay sex act (though I do drink tea), but I do recognize that Hussein continues to raise our taxes to fund his benefactors. Dennis, we talk about President Carter as a historical reference. We're not blaming Carter for the state of our nation. When Reagan took over, we expected him to fix it.

President Obama said he would fix the mess he inherited. Once he took over, it became his responsibility.

When (if) Romney wins, the state of our nation will be his problem to deal with. If he can't fix it, he'll own the consequences.

President Obama wants you all to move forward. That's probably good advice.

Why would young people vote for Obama, their prospect of getting a job gets more bleak every week. Last week those applying for first time unemployment benefits = 382,000. Today another 382,000 first time claims were filed. Over the past 2 weeks 764,000 have lost their jobs! Only 96k jobs were added last month. The economy is tanking, the middle east is in a uproar and where is Obama, on the Letterman show, rubbing elbows with Beyonce and Jay-Z, next week he will be on the View. He had no time for a meeting with our ally Netanyahu, but had time yesterday to have a pirate in the oval office, for Pirates day. Obama will have time next week to meet with president of the Muslim botherhood, Morsi.

As I recall my early Bible education, one of the resaon Jesus was killed was that the Romans feared he would lead a rebellion to overthrow the oppressive rule of the Roman government.

                        Yes I do!

We need to take that money from the filthy rich, then give it to a few people. Teachers, war vets, disabled, elderly, struggling students and people like that should do fine. Then once these people have almost all of the money, they will spend it on goods and services. The money we give them will spur the economy and trickle down to the other people like the Walton and Koch families. You call these college students rich elitists, but I call them job creators.

Bush warned about this mess and it was the DEMOCRATS in control who refused to do anything. Read the real history, not the ones made up by your news media as if you did not have a real brain and believe all you read. He was hosed by the DEMOCRATS on avoiding the mess.

Obama wants a nation of freeloaders and as the 53% that is paying for them, I REFUSE to do it much longer.

Obama has time to be on Letterman but no time for intelligence briefings, meet with Israeli Prime Minister to avoid a war, etc. It is time for the GROWNUPS to take the House back.

I know President Obama will do well in the debates, the Grecian formula King not so much.

What are Romneys goals, cut tax's for the rich, and try to flip flop into the WH! No Thanks!

Ok. Ok. There are soooo many things that should concern us all. Loans for college is one. But there are soooo many big money commercials on tv. And why. Sooo much money is being spent for each vote. But who is giving the money. The coal & oil kock bros are giving $100M/month to mr grover, the gop, the rushbo, foxnews.com & the romney campaign. Watch the kock tank parade video again.

                          http://october2011.org/blogs/kevin-zeese/lone-protester-faces-down-bill-koch-owned-tank-colorado-4th-july-parade

And look who is standing in front of the lead tank. A small businessman hair dresser, tianamen ted, carrying a sign about how the kocks are buying democracy. And destroying the planet. Everybody knows it. More tornadoes. Even in ny. 2012 set a tornado record - over 200 in our country in one day. Bring 'em on says the romney man.

Look at energy. Look at how mr grover, the gop, the rushbo, & foxnews.com and the tea party handles global warming for instance. Of the world's climate scientists

98% - believe co2 is contributing to global warming.

1.95% - not sure if co2 is or isn't contributing to global warming.

0.05% - believe co2 is not contributing to global warming

Mr grover, the gop, the rushbo, foxnews.com & all tea party members tell you they believe that the 0.05% are correct. And you should believe that 0.05% too. Ok. Ok. So what do the coal & oil kocks want. Building the keystone xl pipeline to spew millions and millions of tons of co2 into the atmosphere. Securing more oil fields in the middle east. To do away with the lowest cost renewable energy sources. And high gas mileage for autos. This will cause co2 emissions to skyrocket because mr grover, the gop, the rushbo, foxnews.com and all tea party members will tell you that the 0.05% of the scientists are correct.

Ok. Ok. So you ask mr grover, the gop, the rushbo, foxnews.com or any tea party member - what would happen if you are wrong about global warming. What if the 98% of the climate scientists are correct. They will not answer that question ever. They cannot tell you that the global temperatures will hockey stick upward off the top of the hundreds of millions years temperature chart. And never come back down but will just keep climbing & climbing. With more and more tornadoes every year.

I tell you tianamen ted is right. Everybody knows it. Even the ditto heads. Mr grover, the gop, the rushbo, foxnews.com & all tea party members have been bought out by the coal & oil kocks. With mr grover, the gop, the rushbo, & foxnews.com it is govt of the kocks, by the kocks, and for the kocks. And that abe lincoln's govt by the people & for the people will perish from the earth. And the approval of the tea party in the house & senate is at 8%. The clint eastwood man told you what you need to do. The tea party members are not doing their jobs. Their motto - my way or the highway. You need to give the tea party members in the house & senate their walking papers. Save the world from satan, save democracy in this country, save your very souls.

                          Marshal

The question should be WHY are people confused or doubtful of the "science" of global warming?

Could it be that some "scientist" used faulty data in testimony/ies before congress or documentaries presented to the public and were called on it? Could it be that the "scientist" are bickering among themselves of the cause? Some arguing that it is man made and others indicating that it is in the cycle of solar flares and is of the norm. I am not a scientist so I have to rely on the experts in this field but whom?

Then there is the small item of affordable energy. Our president has outlined that he would bankrupt the coal industry through regulation, but has only offered up things like Solyndra at over $527 million or expensive items such as bankrolling through DoE of over $465 million dollars to a billionaire who builds a luxury car with a base price of over $100,000 for battery storage capacity.

Technology is expensive and is 15 to 20 years off, but in the interm the administration needs to work with energy producers to curtail Co2 through available technology.

                          Good luck.

Yes she is a classy lady that tells you to eat right but holds Lobster dinners and $100 per lb steaks for her parties at the WH.

She is such a classy lady that she is teaching her children that it is ok to take anything that is free and that you don't have to earn it.

She is a classy lady that sent a government jet for her daughter & 25 of her friends on a holiday in Mexico at the taxpayer expense.

Funny how they dumped the vacations so close to the election, wonder why Moochelle Antoinette?

If she trulyl wants to show class, she will tell Barry that he's embarassed the country enough and he should resign.

Your name is partly correct, you have a foolish idea.

And let's add some more class, shall we?

She has so much class that she couldn't wait 4 hrs to ride the same plane with her hubby for vacations so at the taxpayer expense, she flew on separate jets. More than once, what's the matter, could it be that she herself can't stand to be around her own husband?

She has so much class that she lied on the manifest for African customs and listed her daughter as Senior staff officials.

She has so much class that during a speech on 9/11, she stated 'ALL THIS FOR A FLAG" with disdain. Now that was real class, wasn't it?

It's interesting reading these comments and knowing that most of the posters on here couldn't say or do anything if Obama or his team didn't state it.

Romney didn't inherit his millions, he earned it. In addition, if he had done anything wrong, the IRS would've been all over it. Get it right.

Obama can say or do anything and most, including the media will just ignore it.

If you had taken the time to listen to the rest of what Romney said, the statement comes out in a different context:

47% are people who are dependent upon government, who believe they are victims, who believe the government has responsibility to take care of them, who believe they are entitled to heath care, to food, to housing, to you name it.

What he said was that those that do nothing to help themselves, that don't even try he won't be able to reach, no matter how he tries those that feel entitled will continue to vote for Obama because of the freebies.

Why do you think Obama targets the colleges and the African Americans? (AS STATED IN THE ARTICLE, SO SAVE YOUR RACIST COMMENTS) He targets their votes because he believes they are too young to see through and get the real facts.

And lastly, I would rather have someone that has some business sense than a Community Organizer who has lived off the dole his entire life. What has he ever gotten that he earned? What has he ever gotten that wasn't aid for school, etc?

This election is about the next thirty to forty years. Young people better wakeup and think about the Supreme Court. The next President of the United States will appoint three or four replacements to the high court. If you are a young woman, and you care about your personal right of "choice" when it comes to your health, then you better think about the possibility of a reversal of Roe v. Wade. If you are Hispanic and you have lived in the United States since your parents arrived and stayed illegally, but you have gained a high school or college degree, you better care about this election. If you are elderly, living on a fixed income, count on Medicare and possibly Medicaid, you better be worried. America is at the threshold of "One man one vote" going away. Corporate America and the super wealthy are taking over, and the facts are there for all to read and ponder. Human Rights, the core thinking of our founders, is under attack, and the end result if the wrong person is elected really scares me, and it should scare anyone who is Gay, Black, Hispanic, Latino, and/or a Woman.
