First Thoughts: Reaching 50%

Obama at or near 50% in our new polls and other surveys… Did Obama and Romney succeed at their conventions?... NBC/WSJ poll: Economic optimism on the rise… Comparing 2012 to 2004… Examining the up-for-grabs voters… While Obama hits 50%, the “47%” story continues for Romney, with more conservatives growing restless and with the pro-Obama Super PAC airing a new TV ad seizing on the remarks… And Romney borrows $20 million to get him through the end of the primary-funds season.

The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd shares details from the latest NBC News/ WSJ poll, which is the first national one after the conventions.

*** Reaching 50%: Back in May, we noticed in our national and state polls that President Obama was at or near 48% in these surveys, which represented a sort of tipping point for an incumbent president. You're very close to that all-important 50%, but still not there. Well, our latest round of national and state polls conducted after the conventions now shows Obama at or near 50%. For instance, our brand-new national NBC/WSJ poll finds him leading Romney 50%-45% among likely voters and his approval rating sitting right at 50% among registered voters (the first time he's reached that point since March). In addition, last week's NBC/WSJ/Marist polls of Florida (49%-44%), Ohio (50%-43%), and Virginia (49%-44%) had him at or near that 50% threshold. There are exceptions, however: A national AP/GfK poll has Obama at 47% among likely voters and Romney at 46%, and USA Today/Gallup has Obama at 48% in the swing states versus Romney at 46%. But there also are other polls showing Obama at or above 50% -- new NYT/CBS/Quinnipiac surveys have him at 51% in Wisconsin, 50% in Virginia, but 48% in Colorado. So Obama's prospects are looking stronger than a month ago. The question is: Can he hold on to this 50% support? If the election were held today, it would probably look a lot like Obama’s job rating in our new poll -- 50% to 48%.

*** Did Obama and Romney succeed at their conventions? Here’s another way to read our poll: Did Obama and Romney succeed at their conventions in shoring up their weaknesses? Remember, this is our first national poll after the conventions and after the natural bounce time. For Obama, his convention had the dual purpose of trying to make the nation feel better about the last four years, as well as make the case that it would be better off if he were re-elected. Well, our NBC/WSJ poll shows that the percentage thinking the country is better off since Obama became president jumped seven points from August, and it also shows him leading Romney by 11 points on who is better prepared to lead the country over the next four years, 47%-36%. Another goal of the Democratic convention was to fire up the Democratic base, and the evidence there is more mixed. Per our poll, 71% of Democrats express high interest in the upcoming election, which is up three points from August. But that percentage trails Republicans, who are at 80%. What’s more, Romney leads Obama among the highest-interest voters, 49%-46%. As for Romney’s his convention’s goal was to attempt to make him more likeable and close the empathy gap. On this score: mission NOT accomplished. Romney’s fav/unfav rating is pretty much unchanged at 38%-43%, and Obama leads him by nearly 20 points (53%-34%) on who best looks out for the middle class.

*** Economic optimism on the rise: Fueling Obama's horserace numbers in our NBC/WSJ poll is increased optimism about the economy and nation's direction. Per the poll, 39% of registered voters say the country is on the right track, versus 55% who say it’s on the wrong track. That right-track number is a seven-point increase from August, and it’s the highest percentage on this question since Sept. ’09. What’s more, 42% of voters believe the economy will improve in the next 12 months, which is a six-point jump from August and 15-point rise from July. And now get this: Obama is tied with Romney (43% to 43%) on which candidate would be better on the economy. (The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent points out that this is the sixth recent national poll to show Obama and Romney tied on the economy.) In July, Romney held a six-point edge on this question. As NBC/WSJ co-pollster Peter Hart (D) says, “Simply put, it Romney doesn’t win on dealing with the economy, he doesn’t win.” The jump in economic optimism isn’t just being fueled by more Democrats, but also by high single-digit and double-digits shift among self-described indies.

Tony Dejak / AP

President Barack Obama speaks at a campaign event at Schiller Park Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, in Columbus, Ohio.

*** Comparing 2012 to 2004: Still, NBC/WSJ co-pollster Bill McInturff (R) cautions that the race promises to be close. Why? Because the numbers bear a striking resemblance to those from 2004, when George W. Bush narrowly beat John Kerry. Consider: In the Sept. 2004 NBC/WSJ poll, 39% believed the country was on the right track (vs. 39% now); 43% thought the economy would improve in the next year (vs. 42% now); Bush's fav/unfav was 49%-45% (vs. Obama's 48%-42%); Kerry's fav/unfav was 42%-42% (vs. Romney's 38%-43%); and Bush led Kerry by three points among likely voters (vs. Obama's five-point edge now). "If you look at '04 as a model, '04 was really close," McInturff says. "And that's how we should continue to think about the campaign." But do note that in 2004, Kerry won October, besting Bush in the debates to make the race competitive. Can Romney do the same? He lost July and August, and he’s losing September. The next month is his last chance.

*** Who's still up for grabs? Indeed, our poll also shows that the pool of up-for-grabs voters -- those who are undecided or leaning only to either Obama or Romney -- is getting smaller. From April through July, these folks represented 18% of the respondents; in August, they were 16%; and now they are just 12%. So who is this 12%? According to the poll, they are pessimistic about the direction of the country (22% think it's on the right track). They are down on Obama (just 31% approve of his job). But they also don't like Romney (his fav/unfav with them is 21%-38% vs. Obama's 29%-46%).

*** Obama’s big yellow flag: foreign policy. Finally, ours is the first major national poll to test the president’s job rating on foreign policy since the tragedy in Libya and the protests all over the Middle East. And, so far, the crisis appears to have taken a toll on the president. His approval rating on foreign policy dropped to 49%-46% (it was 54%-40% last month). While some of the increase in “disapproval” came from Republicans, there was also a precipitous drop in the president’s rating from independents.

*** The “47%” story continues: While 50% remains the number for Obama, Mitt Romney continues to be dogged by 47% -- that is, his remarks at that secretly taped fundraiser back in May. The campaign has tried to fight back, resurrecting a 14-year-old comment from Obama on “redistribution.” “The president’s view is one of a larger government; I disagree,” Mr. Romney said on FOX yesterday, per the New York Times. “I think a society based on a government-centered nation where government plays a larger and larger role, redistributes money, that’s the wrong course for America.” But make no mistake: This new line of attack is all about reassuring the base. Just look where this argument is being made -- on FOX and Drudge. In fact, perhaps the bigger development yesterday were down-ballot Republicans (like Scott Brown and Linda McMahon) distancing themselves from Romney’s “47%” remarks. "That's not the way I view the world," Brown said in a statement yesterday. "As someone who grew up in tough circumstances, I know that being on public assistance is not a spot that anyone wants to be in."

*** Conservatives growing restless: And while some conservatives have come to Romney’s defense, others are beginning to unload on him. The Weekly Standard’s John McCormack: “The reason such remarks keep slipping out of Mitt Romney's mouth is not that Romney wants to wage a class war against lower-income Americans. The likely problem is that Mitt Romney is not a conservative--or at least wasn't a conservative until late in life--but he is running for president as the nominee of the conservative party on a conservative platform. So he has trouble defending conservative ideas.” Here’s Peggy Noonan in the Wall Street Journal: “I think there is a broad and growing feeling now, among Republicans, that this thing is slipping out of Romney’s hands.” And here’s the Wall Street Journal’s editorial page: “Surely a man as smart as the former CEO of Bain Capital can give a better speech on taxes and dependency than he delivered at that fundraiser. If he can't, he'll lose, and he'll deserve to.” What has to concern Romney and the GOP is that the conservatives who were never really for Romney in the first place are beginning to sound or read as if they are simply exhausted from defending him.

*** Dem Super PAC seizes on Romney’s “47%” comment: Meanwhile, the pro-Obama Super PAC Priorities USA Action is out with the first TV ad seizing on Romney’s “47%” remarks. “Behind these doors Mitt Romney calls half the American people ‘dependent upon government, who believe they are victims,’” the ad goes. “Victims?  Behind these doors middle-class families struggle. And Romney will make things even tougher. Raising taxes by up to $2,000 to give multi-millionaires a $250,000 tax break.” The ad will air in CO, FL, IA, OH, VA, and WI.

*** Romney borrows $20 million: Finally, the news -- first reported by National Review Online -- that Romney had to borrow $20 million to get him through the period where he couldn’t tap into his general-election funds shouldn’t be THAT big of a deal. He has plenty of money now that we’re in the general-election phase (which legally began after his convention acceptance speech). But it does become somewhat of a problem when you add it to all of Romney’s other problems. The 47% remarks. The conservatives who are growing restless. The polls showing Obama at or near 50%.

*** On the trail: Romney raises money in Atlanta and then heads to Miami, FL, where he participates in Univision’s "Meet the Candidates" forum and then holds a "Juntos Con Romney" rally at 8:55 pm ET… Paul Ryan stumps in Virginia… And First Lady Michelle Obama campaigns in North Carolina.

'You've got to work for everybody, not just for some' - President Obama

This is what a true leader believes!

Not someone like Willard, who can't even articulate WHY he wants to be President, other than he feels it's "his turn"!

I have to admit, the conservative hand wringing sure is hysterical to watch!

GALLUP (09/19/2012): One in Five Swing-State Voters Could Change Minds

5% of swing-state voters are undecided, while 7% said there is "some
chance" they could change their vote, and 10% gave it a "slight chance."

http://www.gallup.com/poll/157517/obama-romney-swing-states.aspx

IMO it is exactly as the campaigns and other pollsters have said … this is a base election and both sides are fighting over a very small number of voters. So while Gallup says 20% could go either way the reality is the fight is only over 5% to 8% of persuadable voters, most likely closer to the 5%. So we are looking at about 2 million voters in 12 swing states that will determine the next President. All the campaign and Super PAC ads are pointed at this small sliver of voters.

I’m a lazy no good 47% victim – Go Big O

Over five thousand
years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel ,

"Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead

you to the Promised Land."

Nearly 75 years ago, (when Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said,

"Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, this

is the Promised Land."

Today, Congress has stolen your shovel, taxed your asses, raised the

price of Camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

I was so depressed last night thinking about Health Care Plans, the

economy, the wars, lost jobs, savings, Social Security, retirement

funds, etc .... I called a Suicide Hotline.

I had to press 1 for English.

I was connected to a call center in Pakistan . I told them I was suicidal.

They got excited and asked if I could drive a truck......

Folks, we're screwed.

“If I Were Iran”:

Mitt Romney suggested that the entire video of his
fundraising meeting on May 17, 2012 be released and that is exactly what
happened. To say that 47% of the
American people are dependent on government and see themselves as victims was
outrageous. To say that “My job is not
to worry about THOSE people” was even more outrageous. But for Romney to suggest that Iran could
threaten Chicago with a “dirty bomb” was the most outrageous comment of
all. It borders on sedition.

“If I were Iran,
if I were Iran, — a crazed fanatic, I’d say let’s get a little fissile
material to Hezbollah, have them carry it to Chicago or some other place, and
then if anything goes wrong or America starts acting up, we’ll just say, ‘Guess
what? Unless you stand down, why, we’re going to let off a dirty bomb.’”

I have to wonder
if Willard understands the significance of his careless statements. A radioactive dirty bomb in Chicago would
make a portion of that city uninhabitable.
It would kill innocent people. It would inflict long term illnesses like
cancer on people who were exposed to a dirty bomb. It would be an act of terror.

So we have
candidate Romney telling Iran how to blackmail the United States by using a
dirty bomb in Chicago. And on the other
hand we have President Obama working to keep America safe from terrorist
attacks. What an incredible contrast between the two candidates.

So I ask, how can
a rational person vote for a man who has so little regard for his country that he
would suggest to our enemies that America could be blackmailed by attacking its
“second city”? Willard Mitt Romney has disqualified himself as a viable
presidential candidate.

Who's entitled? Mitt Romney pays 13% in taxes - lower than most working Americans.

1) Americans who paid payroll taxes in 2011 without income tax liabillity - still paid about 15% of their income. 2) Tax Policy Center reports only 7% in the U.S. have no federal taxes to pay & most make less than $20K a year. 3) Those who come under the lowest income tax bracket - still pay federal payroll taxes - plus state/local sales, gas, excise taxes, etc. 4) Tax credits are for poor working families, elderly no longer working or disabled, and students without yearly income. 5) Folks who fall into the category of no federal income tax liability, are disproportionately higher in Republican states, probably due to work-for-less-and-less laws.

Whether Democrat or Republican, these folks aren't avoiding their tax liabilities. They're not 'freeloaders'. And there's no Romney cookie cutter reality. Yet Republicans in Congress like Eric Cantor, keep on asking our vulnerable Americans to put more “skin in the game". Romney's arrogant "47%" statements, only highlight GOP's utter disregard for the lives of millions of people.

In the wake of the "Lost decade", we don't need a plutocratic puppet in the White House. We need a president who can help the middle class get the ball - and run with it. We have such a leader in President Barack Obama.

Romney's Horrible, Awful, Very Bad Weeks Continue. I admit, I'm still recovering from the shock of Romney's declaring me, along with 150 million other Americans, to be part of the 47% of Obama supporters who are lazy, no good, victims who pay no income taxes and sit home and wait for the freebies to arrive. To think all those years I thought I had worked, saved, spent money to help the economy, donated to charities, all those tax records with my name on them, the paycheck stubs, the bank records showing paychecks deposited--it was apparently a dream, a really nice dream but turns out it was only my subconscious desires because according to Mitt, I didn't take responsibility for my life.

Turns out Mitt Romney has a low opinion of Latinos, too; millionaires they joke about Latinos--good for laughs. Oh, and Romney gave advice to terrorists in his little speech to millionaires, told them how best to hit America. He told the millionaires that peace between Israel & Palestine is not worth any effort; he'll kick the ball down the field. The only thing missing about Iran was Mitt singing "bomb, bomb, bomb...bomb, bomb Iran". Nice, that's real nice, Mitt.

Doubt if Mitt realizes that in those 47% he disparaged, many are retired seniors, disabled, many are republicans. Wonder if he realizes that joking about Latinos or blacks or Asians with a bunch of millionaires is not just rude but reflects a serious judgement flaw, reflects a serious character flaw. I doubt it. Romney seems unable to grasp basic information beyond how to make a million or two. He makes inappropriate comments at the oddest times. He seems incapable of realizing that what he says is not just rude but often irresponsible.

Mitt Romney was successful at Bain Capital by sucking the lifeblood out of profitable, private businesses, shipping jobs overseas and creating minimum wage jobs here but if one looks beyond Mitt's success in making money--he has none. He was a failure as Governor of Massachusetts. Now, there's nothing wrong with being good at only one thing, nothing wrong with being good at making lots of money except if one is running for President of the United States. Being President requires a set of many skills. Romney has only one skill.

One incredibly stupid position after another, and still Romney and Ryan remain in a virtual tie with President Obama. Widows who stuck by their husbands through thick and thin, in sickness and in health now face a life on a meager Social Security check. Parasites on the hard-working millionaire and billionaire class. Veterans who had the nerve to be wounded in combat, to lose limbs, to lose their sanity, are now dependent on the VA. More parasites on the hard-working millionaire and billionaire class that desperately needs Mitt Romney's help.

Kill Medicare. Kill Social Security. Increase the defense budget. Get that desperately needed tax cut for the millionaire and billionaire class. And, by the way, trust us, we'll get back to you with the details later. No matter that we lie like rugs. No matter that Romney hasn't released a single complete tax return. Not one.

Yet, the race is close. How can that possibly be? Well, it's because we have forgotten our history. You see, we want to pretend that the United States is a nation based on equality. All men are created equal. Well, that's just not true. This was a nation that was created with a single ruling class in mind. To be a part of that ruling class you had to most importantly be a male. Women were not invited to govern. Barefoot, pregnant, subservient, and just shut the hell up.

Not all males were invited to this ruling party either. You had to be free, 21-years of age, landed, and you'd damned well better be white. Still, knowing that times change the framers allowed for amendments to the Constitution. Yes, it is a living document.

Over time, and earned at the cost - literally - of blood, sweat, and tears, the stranglehold of white males was lessened. In the bloodiest war in our history, we outlawed slavery. All of us were free. Then, less than a century ago, women got the right to vote. Being a white male was no longer a ticket to legislated supremacy. Half a century ago, voting rights received federal protection. Then 18-year-old's got the right to vote. Why not? We could send them off to be killed.

In spite of the laws, in spite of the sacrifices of millions of Americans, voting rights remain under attack. Those attacks must be crushed. It must be made absolutely clear that it doesn't matter how many dollars an individual can throw at an election. It doesn't matter how many shadowy PAC's can try to influence an election. What matters is understanding that the lowliest citizen's vote is equal to the richest citizen's. The citizens who would strip us of our voting rights are clearly the enemy.

So, that's why Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan remain so close to President Obama in the race. White males and their subservient women were automatically the governing aristocracy. That's not true any longer, and nothing is more galling than to see a guy with dark skin running THEIR country. That's why they'll vote for anyone but Obama.

Make no mistake, for all their talk about a meritocracy, that's the last thing these people want. Merit trumps white, it trumps gender, and it even trumps age, and they really hate that. Truth to tell, they can't compete. That's why they want to go back. They don't have the brains to compete on a level playing field. Being a white male should be enough, and to hell with everyone else.

WOW, good morning, Chris, Feisty, Dennis, Ron, Jody, David, Foreplinger >>Foreward>>>

RomneyRyan propose a new $5Trillion tax cut that will give Romney's billionaire donor Adelson, a $2.3Billion tax cut.

And to pay for this tax cut, families with children will pay an additional $2,000 a year!

GOP/Koch's consistent position is that vulnerable Americans should pay more, so that wealthy Americans can pay less.

Whatever it takes and whoever it hurts - to put more money into the pockets of the corporate right.

So, what happened to Obama's post-convention bounce? With the exception of the NBC/WSJ poll which oversamples Democrats by 6-7 points, all of the recent polls show the race is once again a dead heat. If anybody is telling you otherwise, they are either lying, or simply don't know what they're talking about.

Despite the liberal media's attempt to make the claim that this race is all but over (NBC?), Romney just keeps hanging in there. Remember, because of faulty methodology, if polls show the race tied on election day, Romney wins. The media knows this, which is why they're beginning to look so desperate. Look for the polls to become more accurate as the election nears and liberal pollsters realize that their reputations are on the line.

So what now liberals? Maybe you can find another secretly recorded video of Romney speaking the truth.

Seems "video" is still the topic of the week- we would not want to fixate on the murders of four Americans at a Libyan consulate protected by a door lock, or ignored intelligence reports, or anything that might serve to undermine Obama's greatness; so here's a little video of Obama, freely espousing what can only be identified as socialist ideas

Oh, and by the way-  the media frenzy over the Romney statement?  Epic fail.

See, it doesn't surprise me in the least that Jimmy IV-35 and unemployed, spending his days surfing the web for anything that might look negative for republicans- didn't know this, but, just a few days ago, Gallup did a poll.  Turns out that a majority  of respondents think the government does WAAAAY too much for people.

Romney's Libya comments landed with a thud: Reuters/Ipsos poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was the loser in a political fight over U.S. reaction to attacks last week on American diplomatic compounds in Libya and Egypt, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll on Tuesday.

Four in 10 U.S. voters felt less favorably toward Romney after hearing about his criticism of President Barack Obama's handling of the attacks in which the U.S. ambassador to Libya was killed.

Only 26 percent of the registered voters polled felt worse about Obama after hearing about the Democrat's comments about the violence in the Middle East, the survey said.

I keep hearing the slogan "4 more for 44" and keep wondering 4 more years of what?

a. adding 1.3 trillion a year to the deficit? for a total of ~21 Trillion by the end of his second term.

b. another 4 years of 8.1% unemployment - more realistic number is ~15%

c. health insurance cost up 17% a year through 2020

d. more taxes across the board for EVERYONE not just the 1%

e. approximately 60 weeks of vacation for President Obama

Good morning, everyone.

Just one thought today. Frankly, I've been getting very tired of being accused of envying the one percent, and engaging in class warfare. It became pretty clear over the past few days -- if it wasn't before -- that, if there IS class warfare, it is resentment coming from the top down, rather than envy running from the bottom up.

As I have long held this view, without any help from the "liberal media," I found this particular article re-affirming.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/19/opinion/mitt-romney-class-warrior.html?smid=FB-nytimes&WT.mc_id=OP-E-FB-SM-LIN-MRC-091912-NYT-NA&WT.mc_ev=click

When you think of class warfare, you probably think of inciting anger, resentment and jealousy among the have-nots against the haves. That's what Mr. Romney has accused Mr. Obama of doing, but those charges have always been false. The truth is that Mr. Romney has been trying to incite the anger of a small slice of the richest Americans who need no government assistance but get it anyway, against the working poor, older Americans, the disabled workers and veterans, and even a significant chunk of middle-class Americans.

What I find so interesting about all of this is how much anger and goofy paranoia the top income class has developed, and how much money they are willing to spend just to save money on their personal taxes. Their personal security is in no way threatened if the middle class does better. And yet, they would rather spend money to put the rabble down than to share their good fortune with those who are less fortunate than they.

As Backhouse observed,

RomneyRyan propose a new $5Trillion tax cut that will give Romney's billionaire donor Adelson, a $2.3Billion tax cut.

A pretty good return on Adelson's $25 million investment, you'd have to agree. Now, think about how many school lunches for poor kids that $25 million might have bought. I can pretty much guarantee you that none of the $2.35 billion tax cut would go to school lunches, either.

It seems quite clear that this privileged group does not evince the "Christian" values they espouse in any meaningful way. Even the pandering Mitt Romney has said there is nothing he can do for the 47 percent, just like apparently there's really nothing he can do -- or is willing to do -- for Israel.

So, to my conservative friends, unless you can show in what way these conservatives DO espouse Christian values and DO NOT harbor anger and resentment against those who are not as fortunate as they are, I suggest you stop talking about "Class Warfare." Don't be ashamed. Don't hide behind closed doors in "quiet rooms." Bring your greed and anger out in the open for everyone to see. Embrace it.

Romney said that if he had "more time," he might have said his message better. Well, he's had more time, and he sure hasn't said it any better. And that's because he can't, without offending his angry base.

As I observed yesterday, all Mitt Romney has proven here is that, if we common folk actually see him speak the words, we know he's lying.

And, finally, he's proven, once and for all, which way the warfare really runs.

Ditto what Backhouse said, terrific posts from thoughtful leftie, liberals.

Not sure where Sirie got the notion, likely from right-wing notion preachers for 30 years, that President Roosevelt told folks to stay home and do nothing. In fact, his legislation was a reward to the elderly for hard work during their productive years. It was at that time called an old age pension and was established so that when the time comes--and it does eventually come to all of us--when we are no longer physically able to work, we will have paid into a guaranteed pension plan that will let us buy food and keep a roof over our heads.

If Government fails to ensure that the least among its citizens are provided some relief, some assistance, then as a country proclaiming to be "exceptional"--we will have failed the very ideal of Americanism. We do not discard the sick, the disabled, the tired or the poor--we embrace them and above all, we help them. That is United we Stand. That is American Exceptionalism.

'You've got to work for everybody, not just for some' - President Obama

This is what a true leader believes!

Not someone like Willard, who can't even articulate WHY he wants to be President, other than he feels it's "his turn"!

I have to admit, the conservative hand wringing sure is hysterical to watch!

Actually feisty you are correct, a true leader is for everybody, not just for some. but when it comes the the current occupant of the white house that claim does not hold any credibility -- "If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, 'We're gonna punish our enemies, and we're gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us..."

our dear leader was not talking about terrorists or the like but rather talking about Americans with whom he disagrees.

so sad to see all of the lemmings still trying to find something positive in this guy when nearly everything he does goes into the bit bucket.

50% and rising. And the Nations approval of our President will just keep rising through election day. Loving it. Well Romney may have delivered to himself the final death blow with his idiotic statement to his fundraiser friends. Maybe the top 1% think this was a great speech, but I can assure you the other 99% found it beyond offensive. Who does this egotistical jerk think he is? He throws half the people in America under the bus. Insults them and then degrades them. And he expects to get elected. I don't think so.

Well he says "it will just blow over". Boy is he in for a surprise. This will stick to him for the rest of his life.

50%? Well when you chalk up 47% being leeches that don't really contribute to society...that only means 3% of the population have no understanding of economics and little intelligence... 3% I can believe have zero understanding of what is going on in the world and our country.

But riddle me this: If you're paying in taxes, you are paying for your right to vote. If you're not paying in taxes, why do you get a vote? If you're not helping split the cost of the pizza, you shouldn't get a say in toppings....let alone a say in which pizza place we order from.

More money deducting tax for his Poor Victim Horse then a majority of American Workers make in gross income in a year! Yep he wants you to "Pony-Up" so he can care for his Horse. Romney Completely Implodes and Claims Americans Like to Pay Taxes

By: Jason EasleySeptember 18th, 2012 on PoliticusUSA

Mitt Romney went on Fox News and managed to make his situation worse by refusing to release his tax returns, yet claiming that Americans would like to pay taxes.

Neil Cavuto pushed the Fox News lie that 47% of Americans don’t pay taxes, and asked Romney if the percentage should be higher. Mitt responded by telling America that he thinks they would enjoy paying taxes.

Romney said, “Well, first of all of course you’re right. There are a number of retirees, members of the military and so forth who aren’t paying taxes, and that’s as it should be, but I do believe we should have enough jobs and enough take-home pay such as people have the privilege of higher incomes that allow allow them to be to pay taxes. I think people would like to be paying taxes.”

Mitt Romney is the nominee of a party that has refused to raise one penny of taxes, and yet he goes on Fox News and claims that the American people would like to pay taxes. Romney apparently lives in some sort of abstract unreality, because the truth is that no matter no matter how much people earn, they aren’t going to like to pay taxes.

I guess if you are Mitt Romney and can hide most of your taxable income offshore, paying taxes is no big deal. Mitt Romney, who won’t release his tax returns, is probably the last person in the world who should be talking about how much Americans like to pay taxes. Until Romney releases his tax returns, he has zero credibility on the issue. We don’t even know how much Romney paid in taxes, yet he is telling everyone else that they should enjoy it.

Romney’s answer is nothing short of brand new disaster for his candidacy. Now, Republicans are left wondering exactly what did he mean when he said that Americans enjoy paying taxes? The GOP’s mantra is that taxes are too high period, but in a desperate attempt to save his campaign, Romney just threw that out the window.

The worst part about his comments was that this is his campaign’s scripted strategy to handle these videos. Romney wasn’t speaking off the cuff. This is how his campaign is trying to push back.

It doesn’t get more desperate than relying on an edited Obama video from 1998 via Drudge to bail out your sinking ship of a campaign. Romney strategy is to scream that Obama is a big

government socialist while telling America how much they will like paying taxes during his presidency doesn’t sound like a winner to me.

Romney still thinks almost half the country are deadbeats. He confirmed that the video was accurate, and now he is screwing with the Republican Party’s anti-tax ideology.

For Mitt Romney, things have gone from bad to much worse.

And you still haven’t shown us your tax returns. Will they show how much of a deadbeat you are, how much of a welfare queen? Ever mindful of the Rovian tactics, accuse others of doing something, that you yourself are a dab hand at practicing.

no joe --

Seems "video" is still the topic of the week- we would not want to fixate on the murders of four Americans at a Libyan consulate protected by a door lock,

How many times to you have to watch the video before you acknowledge that Chris Stevens himself did not want heavy security so that he could have better access to the Libyan people?

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/16/world/middleeast/us-ambassador-to-libya-knew-the-ways-of-the-arab-street.html?hp

With the State Department on high alert for security threats, especially since the Sept. 11 attacks, and many American diplomats consigned to embassies that resemble fortresses and armored motorcades that do not make unscheduled stops, Mr. Stevens plunged into Arab social life. He traded personal risk for personal contact.

His comfort with his environment and his distaste for displays of security, some quietly suggest, may have led to a touch of overconfidence that cost him his life. His lonely death in Benghazi, a city he knew well, along with those of three other Americans, came during a Libyan militia attack on the American diplomatic mission there, where his presence had not been advertised.

(emphasis added)

You say a false thing once, and it might be attributable to misinformation. But when you keep saying it, after having been advised as to the truth, sooner or later it becomes a lie.

What you said, to the extent you are implying that the US didn't adequately protect Chris Stevens, is nothing more than a lie, no joe.

The next time makes you a liar.

Oh, well, now THERE'S news.

Well, how about a few chorus' of "The Party's Over" in honor of both this election and the GOP.

Romney said one thing I agree with when he was joking about if he were Latino it would improve his chances. He said if the party doesn't find a way to attract Latino voters the Republican Party will be in trouble and he is dead-bang correct. They ARE in trouble. They are the party of the past, not the future and that's their problem entirely. That, and their very frightening move to the far right.

Of course it didn't help that he actually said (and I'm paraphrasing) if the Democrats attract the growing Hispanic population the way they attracted the blacks then the GOP is in trouble, and THEN he doubled down and "and so is the country." Bad, call Ripley, bad call. Kind of makes it sound like the Latino and Black populations are a "problem" for the country doesn't it?

I don't know about you but I just can't wait to see what the polling says about the 47% comment. I think Mr. Romney just single- handedly raised that number to well over 50% and I'm proud to be one of them!

Or, perhaps, it was what he was thinking when he told Republicans "We won".

Concern Citizen --

Care to wonder why we have not had a recovery, why we are still at 8.1 unemployment, why are we at such a high debt?

Thing is, I don't wonder. It's because corporations have been sitting on mountains of cash and not reinvesting in THIS economy. Either they are doing it deliberately, hoping to throw the election, or they are doing it negligently, at the expense of their shareholders.

It's also because jobs are being sent overseas rather than developed here. It's also because there has actually been a drop in public sector employment, while Reagan used increases in public sector employment to get himself out of his first recession.

If public sector hiring was at the same level it was at during the Reagan recession, the unemployment rate would be about 7 percent. If big corporations were not so bound and determined to see this President fail, it would be even lower.

Think how many jobs the Koch brothers could create, for example, if they invested the same $400 million that they are spending to defeat President Obama into clean energy technologies.

In reality Obama and his administration have lied about how things came down in Libya, but it does not stop there. The tape on Obama really saying how he feels on re-distribution and how to the government could accomplish it.

Don't keep us waiting. If you think you've got something, bring it on.

LoL If wealth can be viewed as finite in relative terms, any time you help the working classes do better and provide good paying jobs that improve people's circumstances, that has the natural effect of redistributing wealth in the favor of the less fortunate to the detriment of the more fortunate, comparatively speaking.

Or what do YOU think Mitt Romney means when he says he will create jobs? Will that naturally require some redistribution of wealth, relative to the upper classes? Or are you just planning to print money to pay them?

Seriously. You both talk like you have rocks in your heads.

I've been getting very tired of being accused of envying the one percent, and engaging in class warfare.

Me too, so stop. People that earn their money aren't evil. If money drives people to success great. Do you realize even if we had no millionaires there would still be a '1%'? Or is it that those that want to drive a 1% vs 99% wedge support communism, theoretically a classless society. Tell you what, like unicorns, it dont exist.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.

I dont expect to change most of your minds but nonetheless what we are experiencing today is just further sissification of the United States of America. A place where you once had a drive to succeed now we have people no longer entering the workforce, just going straight to unemployment/SS line.

It's time to encourage a business friendly environment, not demonize it. Especially when the person that demonizes said businesses benefits greatly from them.

Either they are doing it deliberately

i say deliberatlely. One word though. OBAMA

But there also are other polls showing Obama at or above 50% -- new NYT/CBS/Quinnipiac surveys have him at 51% in Wisconsin, 50% in Virginia, but 48% in Colorado.

Being a statistics guy...I decided to take a look at the sampling that was used.

In Virginia, they used Dem 35, Rep 24, Indy 36...for a sampling of Dem +11!? Independents favor Romney 53-42. Now I can understand a slight positive Dem sampling...but doesn't +11 seem like way too much? I was always under the impression that it was a pretty close split in Virginia between GOP and Dem. Anyone from Virginia wanna chime in?

Wisconsin was Dem 35, Rep 27, and Indy 32...for a sampling of Dem +8. This seems high, although I would expect Wisconsin to be more Dem than Virginia. According to the poll, Independents favor Romney 50-44

Colorado was Dem 30, Rep 31, Indy 35...for a sampling of Rep +1. Pretty even, which seems right although maybe slightly skewed Rep...but I'm just relying on anecdotal evidence. Independents favor Obama 47-46.

Just my $0.02...any thoughts from the peanut gallery?

Romney thinks that 47% of Americans are parasites

No. He thinks that 47% of Americans will not find his plan to lower taxes by 20% meaningful to their situation, because they pay no federal income taxes.

Romney said quite a bit more than that. Romney said that the 47% who pay no taxes don't want to take responsibility for their own lives. They want the government to provide them "food, housing, you name it." And they're all going to vote for Obama because he's going to fund their parasitic lifestyle, so Mitt the Great isn't even going to bother trying to those freeloaders to vote for him. Romney's off-the-cuff opinion of Americans said a lot more about him than it did about America.

You’ve lived up to your name!!! “No Representation without taxation”??? how then are the upper 1% so heavily represented??? You, and the rest of the misinformed right feel that just because someone is rich that they are either overtaxed or pay more than the rest of the country combined. Somehow you feel that tax havens and tax evasion are patriotic and someone who doesn’t pay taxes shouldn’t vote….

Personally I think that moronic people shouldn’t vote…guess that eliminates the whole right wing!

In case you missed it:

Romney is apparently prepared to delegate to Netanyahu the decision to start a conflict that the United States military believes is, at best, premature......

To be sure, Israel is a special ally, but that does not entitle it to make the decision on matters where United States interest and power are inextricably and centrally engaged. It is inconceivable that the United States would permit another ally dependent on American funds and American defense systems to take such a decision unilaterally. It is also inconceivable that we would permit another foreign government to intervene directly and forcefully in our political process to garner popular support for its policies over the objections of the administration.

GBM, well said. Romney hides his millions off-shore, then claims he has paid every penny he legally owes. How do we know that. VP Ryan submitted 10 years worth of tax returns to Mitt yet Mitt refuses to release an equal number to the American people he is asking to vote for him. Shameless hypocrit. Trust him? Romney didn't mention the 4,000 Americans who earned $1 million or more and paid ZERO federal income taxes in 2011.

Grumbling about paying taxes is what we Americans do yet when polled about their tax levels, a majority says they pay about the right amount.

Here's my 2 cents: Party identification is not very strong for a lot of people. It can change rapidly, depending on the circumstances. If Mitt Romney were a better candidate, there would be more Republicans in the samples collected. If the survey samples are chosen randomly, the breakdown of party preference should be accurate to within about the same margins of error as the breakdown for candidate preferences.

Your own champions Bill Kristol, Peggy Noonan, Joe Scarborough, etc. have called him out.

Kristol said Romney's comments were "stupid and arrogant."

Romney doesn't even acknowledge the criticism of his own party or the damage he has done himself. He doubled down on his insulting comments by saying that the people he was referring to are "...those that are dependant upon government and those who think government's job is to re-distribute."

Admittedly, there is a segment of the population that can be described as welfare cheats. But Romney confidently lumps almost half the American population into that category. He forgets that we haven't seen his tax returns...he forgets we suspect he is among the 47% who pay no income taxes.

Romney is an idiot, clearly unfit to hold the highest office in the land. Was he really the best you guys could do?

HARD TO SEE HOW ROMNEY PULLS THIS ONE OUT....

...those who are undecided or leaning only to either Obama or Romney -- is getting smaller. From April through July, these folks represented 18% of the respondents; in August, they were 16%; and now they are just 12%.

Ok, so let's assume of that 12% undecided, 47% are receiving Social Security or are active duty military. Romney just insulted them by calling them deadbeats. Figure a 2-1 break among them for Obama, because there's always 34% of people who are too dumb to know they've been insulted, and too dumb to vote their own self interests. So, that's another 3.76% for Obama, leaving Romney and Obama splitting the remaining 6.36%, or 3.18% each. That, puts the race at 56-44 going into the debates. Based on Romney's proclivity for foot in mouth, and the fact that he has to defend a program that rewards millionaires and punishes middle class families, this turkey is done. So, let's concentrate our efforts on defeating the Republican Congress that has obstructed American progress.

The problem with conservatives is that their core philosophy is flawed (making the top 1% richer is not helping us create jobs), and their passion is driven by lying wacko pundits who say anything to get higher ratings. Hence the only possible candidates are morons or flip floppers. You cannot be sane, consistent, and truthful and win in GOP primaries. Hence the GOP's choices were limited, and this is the best they can do. It makes you wonder if the GOP will fade away. You cannot have a political party that hates 47% of tax payers, union members, gays, latinos, blacks, school teachers, intellectuals, women, modern science, muslims, atheists, and a host of other categories that, frankly, add up to America.

The libs will probably be selling their bumper stickers "Osama Bin Ladin is Dead and GM is Alive" in the lobby. Nope, poll numbers won't matter because we'll all be blown up or overrun, now that the military is being shaved nearly bare. You think that cheesy UTube video made them mad???...Did anyone not notice many of the rioters waving Bin Laden's picture? So, how about America just rubs it in and pokes that sleeping dog. Those radical Muslims will be exacting revenge in spades. They had blood in their eyes. But, what the heck, Obama is willing to risk Americans' lives...and all for votes. Oh yeah, he CARES. What's that Obama likes to say?.....he (and Biden) acted STUPIDLY! Laker Steve: actually, that initial upbringing by President Obama probably has helped our foreign policy. It enabled us to put together a strong coalition which aided the overthrow of despots in Egypt and Libya, without the need to actually commit US troops to a ground war.

What I would like to know is how you think Mitt Romney's privileged upbringing, including getting away with violent assault, will assist the country ?

Mitt Romney's problem, and the problem of the Republican party, is that their basic core philosophy of destroying the government, taking what little the poor have away from them, and giving more money to the already wealthy just does not result in improvement of the United States. No jobs result and, contrary to their thoughts, the end result is actually the destruction of the country.

There are a lot of people who feel this way. Google: No representation without taxation.

The idiocy of Fools Gold and Deitrich is absolutely dumbfounding. They completely and utterly fail to realize everyone pays taxes in some form or another. The interesting part is they represent the complete and utter snobbery of the 53% Club, of which Romney so wants to be the head cheerleader. The stunning arrogance and ignorance of these blind posters is so appalling, one simply wonders if they shouldn't be relegated to another country. Indeed, representation without taxation - name one individual in this country that isn't taxed from birth.

Mitt Romney has now taken the lead in the swing state of New Hampshire.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in New Hampshire shows Romney with 48% support to President Obama's 45%. Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and three percent (3%) are undecided.

The desperation, anger and downright ugliness we see in some of these comments comes from one side.

Not to point fingers GOP, but if all you have to do today is vent your frustration over your candidate's sorry performance, his failing campaign, and his squandering of your donation money (Romney pretends he's financing his own campaign? There's a laugh!!) may I suggest that you go for a walk instead?

Let the rest of us get about the business of salvaging what decency and brotherhood we have left in this country.

Watched a 1933 movie last night and it was just comical to hear the right wing rehtoric in the movie, exactly the same as it is today and the comment by the liberal "you can't just water the leaves of the plant and hope the roots will grow" just had me rolling on the floor. That was a long time before the Trickle down Economics name was tagged. Frankly it was sad to hear the script in the movie, it sounded like it was written in 2012 rather than 1933. Isn't it time to move on? Why do we continnue to try to protect the 1%. Love it, those Hitlerists that think some people should vote and others can't. Wow, I wonder if that includes the wealthy that don't pay taxes. And tell me that there is anyone in the US that does not pay some tax, someplace. Every thing we do is taxed. Some states don't have income taxes, does that mean they should not be able to vote. What an idiotic statement and un-American, go away.

Here's a shocker for the right wing - CEO's and other big paycheck guys REALLY AREN"T ALL THAT SMART!

They're usually hired for their connections, not their thinking ability.

Does that mean they're not actually worth all that money? That it's just a cult of wealth?

      From NPR:

By grouping those who don't pay income taxes together with those who he says are "dependent upon government" and therefore support President Obama, Romney has earned "three Pinocchios" from The Washington Post's The Fact Checker. It writes that:

"Romney appears to conflate a few things — Obama's approval rating, the percentage of people who do not pay income taxes and people who rely on government assistance.

"There may be some overlap between these groups but they really are not the same thing."

In fact, while Romney seemed to say that the president will draw most of his support from those who pay no income taxes, a Tax Foundation map highlighting the 10 states with the highest percentages of "non-payers" shows most are Republican territories:

      — Alabama

      — Arkansas

      — Florida

      — Georgia

      — Idaho

      — Louisiana

      — Mississippi

      — New Mexico

      — South Carolina

      — Texas

I am surprised no one found this as offensive as I did. No taxes no vote? So if the government passes laws that removes your liability to pay taxes you can no longer vote? Did you even think of that consequence?

This may sound like hyperbole but it really isn't. What you have stated right there is turning poor people in to second class citizens. Read that over and really think about what it says. You may sneer at all the left posts on this site, but its honestly people like you that drive them. I

I don't CARE what Romney SAYS. I care about what Obama DID (or didn't do if you want to view him through the eyes of campaign promises).

49% of Americans reported they received welfare in the last census (not including Social Security or Medicare). If that's not the true "underemployment" number, we have alot of fraud going on or too many abusing the system. THAT'S what Romney was eluding to. I'm sorry if some of you can't comprehend that, but he was talking to people who didn't need that explained to them in the recording. 49% is WAY too high to sustain.

I hope you're ready for 3/3 of gov't being in Republican hands and in control of structuring your personal health care.

That was a long time before the Trickle down Economics name was tagged.

*facepalm* - NOBODY on the right talks about Trickle Down Economics. That's a term tagged and used only by the left. The only true "trickle down" is government handouts or this bitter outcry that the "rich" should send more money to Washington so they can get bigger cuts of the pie themselves.

Meanwhile, while NBC is busy concentrating on the meaningless, Obama has his State Depart. continue lying about the events in Libya and the extent of the security. Please not the part about the RULES OF ENGAGEMENT that called for security to carry WEAPONS WITHOUT BULLETS. now an Ambassador and 3 other Americans are dead because of Obama's neglect

by MICHAEL PATRICK LEAHY 18 Sep 2012 73 POST A COMMENT

In her daily press briefing on Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland admittedthat she provided false information Friday about the State Department's hiring of private security firms for the American mission in Benghazi attacked on September 11th:

QUESTION: You also said there was no contract with a private security firm in Libya, and yet apparently some British security guards were hired. Is that your way of saying you didn’t contract with a firm but you did hire individual security guards?

MS. NULAND: Thank you for that, because there was an error in what I said. The external security, external armed security, as we have been saying, outside of the perimeter, was fully handled by the Libyan side. There was no contract – contracting out of that. There was a group called Blue Mountain Group, which is a private security company with permits to operate in Libya. They were hired to provide local Libyan guards who operated inside the gate doing things like operating the security access equipment, screening the cars, that kind of thing.

        Please.

QUESTION: Just to clarify, they were contracted by the U.S. State Department or another agency – Blue Mountain?

MS. NULAND: They were contracted by the Department.

QUESTION: And Blue Mountain is a British company?

MS. NULAND: I’m going to let them self-identify on that front. But the people who were hired were Libyans.

Nuland continued with reporters, "There’s nothing else that I have that needs correcting at the moment."

Only four days earlier, at her daily press briefing on Friday, Nuland emphatically denied that the State Department had hired any private firm to provide security at the American mission in Benghazi:

QUESTION: (Inaudible) the claim was made yesterday that a company that is a spinoff of Blackwater, in fact, proposed or contracted the United States Government for this particular kind of eventuality, and it was caught up in some sort of bureaucratic --

MS. NULAND: Completely untrue with regard to Libya. I checked that this morning. At no time did we plan to hire a private security company for Libya.

QUESTION: Toria, I just want to make sure I understood that, because I didn’t understand your first question. You said – your first answer. You said that at no time did you have contracts with private security companies in Libya?

        MS. NULAND: Correct. [emphasis added]

Solid investigative reporting by Wired's Danger Room may have forced the State Department's hand to finally disclose the truth. On Monday, Danger Room strongly contradicted Nuland's claims:

The State Department signed a six-figure deal with a British firm to protect the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya just four months before a sustained attack on the compound killed four U.S. nationals inside.

Contrary to Friday’s claim by State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland that “at no time did we contract with a private security firm in Libya,” the department inked a contract for “security guards and patrol services” on May 3 for $387,413.68. An extension option brought the tab for protecting the consulate to $783,000. The contract lists only “foreign security awardees” as its recipient.

The State Department confirmed to Danger Room on Monday that the firm was Blue Mountain, a British company that provides “close protection; maritime security; surveillance and investigative services; and high risk static guarding and asset protection,” according to its website. Blue Mountain says it has “recently operated in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, the Caribbean and across Europe” and has worked in Libya for several months since last year’s war.

As Breitbart News reported on Tuesday, Blue Mountain Group is a British security firm hired by the State Department to provide security at the American mission in Benghazi. Blue Mountain Group was chosen by State, in part, because it was willing to accept the State Department Rules of Engagement for Libya that prohibited security guards at Benghazi from carrying weapons that contained bullets.

The State Department has refused to release the document that describes the State Department Rules of Engagement for Libya to Breitbart News. On Friday, Breitbart News filed a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain the document.

All of a sudden, the non-producers, the miscreants who pay nothing in taxes, yet look to get all they can from the government without lifting a finger are mad at Mitt Romney for calling them out.

But. these are the same people who whine and moan about him paying "only" a few million dollars in federal taxes.

As time goes on, and as more people start to understand what Romney was saying at that fundraiser, the polling numbers will change.

He was only saying that about 47% of the population is going to vote for Obama because they feel entitled to something from the government. So, he cannot "worry about them" as he campaigns, because he isn't going to get their vote under any circumstances.

He never said he wouldn't represent them if he was elected, and he never said he was "writing them off' as has been inferred by the news media.

What's more, he spoke the truth about people who feel that the government owes them something and should take care of them. He's not talking about veteran's benefits, or unemployment assistance for people who are out there legitimately looking for work.

He's talking about people who go down to the SS office and take disability benefits when they aren't disabled (Not everybody. But a lot do, and I've seen it!!!!), people who are dependent on welfare, and food stamps, and other forms of government hand outs, instead of getting up off their butts and going to work. (Some people need welfare, I understand that. But many are capable of working and don't.)

These are the people who's votes he knows he's not going to get. So, why bother?

There are a lot of us out here who've been through hard times, and who didn't look to the government to get us through them.

At the end of the day, we are all responsible to take care of our own families, and ourselves first. Anybody who can't see that, or who doesn't understand that is obviously part of that 47% .

As for me, I'm part of the 53% who work, produce, take care of their families, and pay taxes..........and guess what?

Obama hasn't done squat for us!

Your argument is pathetic - the "Secret Tape"... from 14 years ago, wow lame "secret"... the the media will ignore... except for when they addressed previously... in which Obama says "I actually believe in redistribution"... and then when you listen to the rest he says "... to a certain extent, to where everyone has a fair shot"... so your smoking gun is in actuality another lame a$$ "you didn't build that" shot that everyone easily understands as being taken out of context, that merely becomes comedic fodder, and makes your argument look even more foolish.

Long and the short of it is the more that you attempt to make an argument, the more you fail and drive "sheeple" as you call them, away from your side...

I am sure most of your peers would either say please stop, or please just go away.

The lying, left-wing scum are out in full force today. Of course, the wh0res at NBC have just released the latest issue of NBC Pravda. The dishonesty of these so-called "journalists" is almost funny.

You have only to note the organizations that the NBC wh0res AND OBAMA cite as their "sources". You need only to select one of these "sources" and type it into a search engine (adding the word SOROS) to reveal the foul stench of the Marxist convicted felon that holds Obama's leash. After all, he also holds the leashes of much of the mainstream media in his blood-stained, liver-spotted hands.

They perpetuate the LIE that Romney called 47% of the country "deadbeats".

Retirees and the military know that Romney is with them. The military also KNOWS that the Republicans have ALWAYS had their backs and that the Democrats, that are now trying to USE them for political reasons, are the SAME low-lifes that were spitting on them when they returned from Viet Nam.

They realize that the "deadbeats" referred to are the crack wh0res, gangbangers, welfare frauds, tax cheats, junkies, and baby mamas that ARE the Democratic Party.

They, along with other ardent Obama supporters such as The Socialist Party of America, The Communist Party USA, Hamas, and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ARE Obama's base.

Republican desperation is way up. I can tell by reading the posts here. Calling the President by his middle name has increased 50%. Desperation among Romney/Republican apologists here is up 50%.

My question to Romney/Republican apologists is this. When will you tire of defending Romney lies and Republican efforts to slow the growth of our economy and cut taxes for those rich people that pay you so well?

Jobs bill blocked, infrastructure bill blocked, what other Republican accomplishments can you brag about?

These last 2 years have seen little if any help from Republicans to speed the recovery from that horrible 2008 recession. Don't you realize that all this talk about budget deficits and the national debt is not what you talk about with unemployment above 8%. The solutions to these long term problems cannot be solved if you increase unemployment by cutting spending in a high unemployment economy. Laying off government workers will only slow our growth and prolong the recovery. This is STUPID.

If we increase the growth rate of our economy, unemployment goes down, government's unemployment costs go down, revenue from taxes goes up. This is how you reduce budget deficit and unemployment rate at the same time. To increase the growth rate, we invest in needed infrastructure (we always do this in recession and recovery). The rich will not invest their money in expanding their companies until their sales outpace their productivity gains.

That is how it works. It's called macroeconomics. It is no secret. Check it out.

hahaha, that's your way of explaining Mitt's lying by omission?

How about Mitt saying he paid FEDERAL INCOME tax every year - I'll settle for that first. Since Romney has a degree in business from Harvard, he should have no problem understanding the significance of those two little words: "federal + income."

So Mitt is either really stupid or he is lying by omission because no one deliberately avoids saying "I paid FEDERAL INCOME tax" for 20 years.

Zman -- Read. These are the people who REALLY need you to carry their water. Right?

Contrary to what you believe. Democrats work hard. They run businesses and PAY TAXES. They worked hard for their retirement and they served are country with honor. These are the Democrats that will never vote for someone like Romney. He thinks they are freeloaders. What ass he is.

Nobody's really talking about this slice of the pie, but Mitt Romney's "47%" who pay no federal income tax include several thousand of the highest-income households in the country.

The Tax Policy Center estimates that 4,000 households with incomes over $1 million ended up with zero federal income tax liability in 2011. Another 14,000 made between $500,000 and $1 million.

Combined, those households represented just 0.025% of the more than 76 million who did not pay.

But their presence in the No Tax Club underlines the fact that the tax code is chock full of tax breaks and exceptions benefiting people up and down the income scale.

There are various reasons why a household booking more than $1 million in income could owe nothing in federal income tax, experts note.

Among them, people who live off their investment income and report large investment losses in a given year may be able to offset the taxes owed on their investment gains.

Or they may have gotten a lot of their income from tax-free investments, such as municipal bonds.

Another possibility: a wealthy tax filer may report a lot of dividend income from foreign stocks on which he already paid tax to a foreign government. He would get a foreign tax credit on his U.S. return, to avoid double taxation. And if his foreign tax bill tops his U.S. tax bill, he wouldn't owe anything to the IRS on that dividend income.

Add in some charitable contributions and other tax breaks to any of these scenarios, and a tax filer could whittle down down his federal income tax bill to zip.

It's impossible to say how many households -- rich and otherwise -- would end up with zero federal income tax liability under Romney's tax reform proposals. There are still too many unknowns -- such as which tax breaks he'd be willing to curb to pay for his proposed tax rate reductions.

But it's a fair bet there will still be a notable number. The percent of non-payers fluctuates from year to year, but there has not been one year since 1916 in which there were no non-payers, according to the Tax Foundation.

Among the returns filed -- which excludes people who didn't have to file because their income was too low -- non-payers have ranged from a low of 7.5% in 1943 to a high of 56.1% in 1934. Since 2000, the group of non-payers has grown to more than 40% from 25%.

          Fool's Gold --

While I personally don't advocate taking peoples votes away, I do think it's a conflict of interest for these people not paying federal income tax to have a say in who does pay it and in how much they do.

Too easy. Not every issue involves taxes. Some are purely social issues. And some of the people not paying them now have paid a heck of a lot of taxes in their lives. Many of them more than you. And some of them have given their service to this country so that you could be free to be such a carpy.

Tell your parents and grandparents that you feel that way.

Tell it to the disabled Iraq War vet living under that bridge.

          Deitrich,

Because they're still effected by the policies put in place by elected officials. It sounds like you're advocating for a poll tax. Yeah, let's only let the people who can afford to, vote. That will result in fair and just legislation. Great idea.

          Everyone Else,

This breaks down the 47% pretty good.

          1. It's FAR WORSE for Mitt Robmey than these polls indicate!!!
          2. Prediction: largest landslide victory for President Obama in modern history

The largest landslide in American presidential history was when Reagan beat Carter. Carter had a bad economy and high unemployment). Carter only one Georgia (just barely) and Washington DC. I don't think the way this country is divided, that is likely to happen anytime soon. If shows you have no credibility to anything you say. Quit wishing and present facts. The only person that is doing the taking is Obama and redistributing it, Just like he said in his own words. I notice MSMBC didn't bother to put that clip out.

Why is our muslim president turning his back on our best ally, Israel!

My brother and his family live in Jerusalem - he is a minister - his office is close to one of Israel 's largest underground military bases.

He called me last night which is very unusual - usually it is email.

He called to tell me that he is sending his family back to the US immediately due to what he is seeing happen within the last week and what he is being told by his military contacts in both the Israel and US military.

He said he is seeing with his own eyes military movements the likes of which he has never seen in his 20+ years in Israel .

What he called a massive redeployment and protective tactics of forces is underway.

Over the last two days he has seen anti-aircraft missile deployments throughout the Jerusalem area including 3 mobile units that he can see from his office windows.

In addition, he has seen very large Israeli armored columns moving fast toward the Sinia where Egypt has now moved in Armor.

There are reports of the top military leaders meeting with Israel 's Sr. Rabi which is something that has happened preceding every prior military campaign.

His admonition is to watch carefully and pray for Israel and its people.

He is convinced that barring something extraordinary Israel will attack Iran - with or without the US - and very soon.

It is the belief in Israel that Obama does not stand with Israel but with the Arab countries.

He has told me before that Israel will saber rattle from time to time but that this time is very different from what he is seeing and hearing.
He was at the Wailing Wall 2 days ago and there were hundreds of IDF soldiers there. As he was leaving he passed at least 20 military buses full of soldiers in route to the wall.

He has never seen this before either.

Just thought I would pass this along.
My brother is not an alarmist by any means.

When he talks like this it gets my attention for sure and usually I find he knows more than he shares.

There are reports that Israel is asking Obama to come to Israel immediately but they are being answered with silence.

My opinion is that I see the making of the perfect storm.

Does he include himself in the 47% who don't pay income tax? Of that 47% a LARGE majority are seniors. There must be atleast 2% within that 47% that don't pay income tax because they pay capital gains taxes (AND ARE WORKING AGE) and therefore don't pay FICA either. He and his ilk are the drain on society. Mittens should not receive medicare/aid or social security either.

We all see it, we all know it, the polls say it, but as long as you deny what this rommey guy is doing you can't hope to fix the problem (in this case the election). Denial is an important and difficult hurdle to get over but hating other people while denying what your prophet is saying means you can't move ahead with your agenda. Romney is wrong about the 47%, RobMeHood remarks to wealthy Billionaire donors at a private fundraiser, RobMe said 47% of Americans pay no taxes and believe the Government has a responsibility to care for them and are entitled to Social Security, Health care, to food, to housing. RobMeHood goes on to say all Americans should take personal responsibility and care for their lives and stop taking Government handouts. Washington poll - Who doesn't pay and why, 42% of the 47% are retired seniors, low-wage workers, house wife's, children, military Veterans handicap from wars, this is the bulk of those who Romney is talking about that pay no taxes, this is beyond insanity, Mitt Romney is heartless the way he looks at our Country !!!

American Airlines layoffs combined with the coal miners laid off today really shows just how much this economy is NOT improving. fuel prices double in last 4 years, insurance costs rising because f new rules that are going into effect, utility rates rising, people on food stamps increased by almost 40%, the American flag being torn down and al-Qaeda's flag being flown over our embassies. AND yet there are still idiots that will vote for a president that stated energy costs would necessarily increase dramatically, anyone in coal would be bankrupted due to fees, and he would fundamentally transform America. So how is it going having our embassies attacked, ambassadors killed, inflation rising faster then earnings can ever compensate and more people left with little hope as they have a harder and harder time finding a decent job??? MANY MANY people have received change, very very few have hope with no decent job prospects in sight or any way to predict how they will support their families.

“The president’s view is one of a larger government; I disagree,” Mr. Romney said on FOX yesterday, per the New York Times. “I think a society based on a government-centered nation where government plays a larger and larger role, redistributes money, that’s the wrong course for America.”

Yet Mitt Romney and the Republicans apparently forgot that redistribution is a part of CAPITALISM, no Communism. Whenever somebody spends money or pays taxes, money is redistributed to another sector of the economy, like the government or the auto industry or the retail industry. And by the way, Romney does not oppose redistribution; he likes it when it is redistributed UPWARDS.

Republicans always bitch about wealth redistribution and how the "communist liberals" want to take from the "givers" (as Paul Ryan calls them) and give to the "takers." Numerous Republicans, like John McCain, criticize people who argue for a more equal playing field and a more economically equal society. And this argument works pretty well, as it resonates both economic conservatives and supply-siders AND independent moderates. However, Republicans fail to tell the American people that their "beloved free market" ALREADY REDISTRIBUTES wealth. Much of the money a person makes goes to pension or 401ks, goes to local restaurants, mom-and-pop stores, and large retailers, not to mention gas stations. In fact, redistribution of wealth is the very essence of capitalism. Now, you conservatives (like Jim Spence) may argue that the government should not do what the private sector can do (aka offer services like education and/or healthcare) and that wealth redistribution is unfair, but you fail to admit that YOUR POLICIES have redistributed wealth. Every @!$%#ing income and investment income tax cut has sucked wealth to the 1% of Americans, allowing them to more than double their share of total national income. In fact, Republicans (with the possible exception of the New Deal) have pulled off the largest redistribution ploy IN THE HISTORY of the United States. They undermined the New Deal, weakened what remained of it, and let the economy collapsed due to massive tax cuts for capital gains (which, if you check the history, can often cause investment bubbles) and deregulation. This is the biggest scam in the history of the world; the supply-side scam.

And by the way, I am a FIRM believe in wealth redistribution. And I'm not ashamed to say it. Wealth redistribution is okay in moderation and when it is done for the common (or collective) good. And conservatives, enough with your "communist" accusations. Adam Smith even advocated for helping out the disadvantaged (which requires wealth redistribution via taxation), and YOU also support wealth redistribution; you're just keeping quiet so nobody realizes that you support it when it goes TO the 1%.

Ok...for one, all you people that think the republican platform is about 1% need to clean out your ears and actually listen. It is about freedom, it is about jobs, it's about the economy, it's about Americanism instead of socialism.

Secondly...I can't believe the media is insisting on continuing to report these old video's while our embassies across the globe are under attack. Pakistan has 50,000+ protesting the United States...and we've funded these extremists for years.

What does the white house come out with? We should keep funding them. You have to be kidding me!

The ineptitude of this leadership on foreign policy is amazing. That is enough right there for newsstories for days.

The administration MISSED the warnings from Libya about an imminant attack?? (why...because Obama was skipping all his security meetings). Eric Holder is either a criminal, or he is completely useless as the head of any department. The economy continues to tank and gas prices continue to increase.....

Yet, NBC is still talking about a video.

Only one problem though, obama has to get him into the US illegally and have him registered to vote fraudulently......Oh wait, that should be no problem for THIS president!

How about this - get Chavez legal in the US, run him for president in four years after obama's next term is over, get obama as Chavez's VP, then we can all celebrate with a TRULY "out-from-the-closet" Socialist government! HOW GREAT WOULD THAT BE!

Romney seems proud of the fact that on the one tax return he's released, he paid not one penny more than the tax code requires. Yet he denigrates those who don't have an income tax payment because the tax code doesn't require it. So what does that say about Mitt and his world view?

The RWNJs always falsely claim that we liberals hate rich people. But we don't, unless you think "hating" means that we think they should pay the same tax rate that they did under Clinton.

Job1 - I believe there will be no cheating or tax evasion, but the reason he is hiding his 2010 and prior years tax returns is that the numbers themselves will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this guy is not just rich, but crazy rich. He knows that will totally blow his claim to be 'one of us' out of the water. The 2011 return will do the same thing. He just was not smart enough to know that if he got all this out of the way in April, it would be long forgotten. Instead, he put it off until right before the election. If this is any indication of his business acumen, it makes me wonder how the hell he made all his money. It sure wasn't due to his intelligent strategy decisions, because this one was just nuts.

One thing we are learning from Mitt and Donald Trump - it doesn't take intelligence to get a lot of money. It take inheritance and a disdain for average people, and a willingness to work with others in your class to enrich yourselves at the expense of America.

art, architecture, mathematics and astronomy. The Maya Calendar was very
sophisticated and extremely accurate. Their Calendar predicted the end of the
world in the year of my lord, 2012. Did the Mayan’s know of the coming of
BaRack Husein Obama? How could they know that a charismatic historic
transformative man lacking wisdom would arise? Those Mayan intellectuals must
have been aliens. How could any man accurately predict that future? The
prophecy was so grim, that in panic they fled from their cities hundreds of
                    years before his coming.

Most prophecy is very vague, so anything they have said or written could be
construed as true. These prophets are often deceased for hundreds of years
before their predications become realized. We are soon to witness the wisdom of
the Mayans, expressed many years ago.

                    Atop the Mayan temple
                    many important procedures were undertaken.

Mayan Priests performed the first open heart surgery. Using a flint knife, they
cut open the chest of those sacrificed and held up the still beating heart to
the delight of the crowd. Then the sacrificed moved on to the next stage.

The Mayan created many inventions still used today. Most notably was the early
form of the “Chop a matic”. With just one swipe of your hand, the head of those
sacrificed would be cleanly cut. I was sold on the product after the first
demonstration shown on the Mayan Home Shopping Network. The Mayan Priest and
gathered crowd watched with delight as the severed head bounced down the steps
of the temple. Children learned math by counting the number of bounces made by
the severed sacrificial heads. In unison they counted out loud - 1, 2, 3, 4, -
                    - - - - - - - - -. A new show was started called “As the head bounces”. It was
the number one educational program on Mayan Public Theatre. (MPT)

                    How could the Mayan’s
predict our doom but not their own? A recent discovery at a Mayan Temple
yielded information on the end of their culture around 900 AD.

The following words were the last ever carved in Stone by the Mayan’s:
“Liberals took over; many people stopped working, depended on government” the
final words were “king emptied treasury, and went broke”. The Liberals in Mayan
Government at first was pleased with this early form of “Social Justice”. It
guaranteed forever they thought the support of the people. They created the
original “Takers”. The remaining producers were taxed and regulated until they
could no longer carry the financial and moral burdens of society. The Mayan
King had emptied the treasury to appease the takers and the civilization
collapsed. The ancient Takers then rioted, demanding social justice. The riot
turned violent, with the Takers robbing, killing, raping and doing all kinds of
insidious activities. Once stolen supplies were depleted, with no producers
left to support them, the people of the Taker Tribe had no choice but to
abandon the cities and blend into the countryside, forever searching for someone
                    to blame.

                    The Mayan culture
disappeared well before the arrival of the Spanish Europeans. Unlike many
ethnic groups, they had no other racial groups to blame for their shortcomings.

                    "

Nothing. It does, however, say that he doesn't believe that a 20% tax reduction will sway people who pay no taxes to vote for him."

But it also means that the point of the tax cut is to enrich the rich, not to improve the economy or create jobs. That is honest, but not the message he gives to the poor conservative base.

"liberals think the rich should give more of their money to government so that the government can do more for liberals."

That's the claim, but it is a stupid one. Spending increases were higher under the GOP government of Bush & company. Spending has nothing to do with taxes. And the government spends way more on rich people than on poor people (all of welfare is just $20b). Those of us who want tax increases are those who can do arithmetic, and who can remember all the way back to 2000 when we had a giant surplus.

The only reason so many of you people want to see Romney"s tax returns is because so many of you would like to KNOW WHAT ONE LOOKS LIKE. You people are all about distractions. The economy still sux and our people are being murdered by filthy savages in the Mid East.

LOL but I would also say they want to see them so they can further whine about his wealth. Its not fair? then grow a pair, get some ambition and get some.

Actually I want to see them to see if he paid a lower tax percentage than I did. If he did - I find it ridiculous that a multimillionaire pays a smaller % of his income than I do (no where near a millionaire).

When poor and elderly people dont pay income taxes because they dont make enough - they are called parasite.

When millionares dont pay income taxes - they are considered smart law abiding citizens.

                    You people are clowns.

nazarite - your analogy (and history) is terribly flawed on a number of points, but just remember this one prior to Obama - every Democratic president since WW2 has lessoned the national debt as percent GDP; every bit of the huge debt explosion was the fault of Reagan and the two Bushes. Clinton set us on a path to zero debt by 2011.

Get it? The crazy irresponsible ones have been Republican conservatives. True, Obama did not balance the budget yet, but look at Romney's budget plan - it increases the deficit short term and doesn't pretend to balance the budget for 10 more years!!!! How can you blame Obama for not balancing it in 4 years from the midsts of the worse economic crisis since Hoover?

This are facts. Another fact is that Romney thinks middle Americans are crap. Why be a pathetic loser? Be a man and vote against him.

I don't think Romney takes issue with people having enough deductions to pay no taxes as much as those who are content to stay there...there are plenty of folks working their butts of to scrape by and probably have a low tax obligation(although I still think everyone should have to pay something) but he's referring to those who have no desire to improve or to do better or to work harder or learn more...like inner city folk content to waste their food stamps on beer and cigarettes.

During the last 2 years Romney paid 6.2 million in taxes. 6.2 million. Can't say he isn't supporting the country. He also paid 15% of his income to charity. How much did Obama pay? 1%...yep that right 1%. (oh that right, he would rather redistribute YOUR money!) "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it -- that that's an entitlement. ----Mitt Romney May 2012

Here is where Romney is so far out of touch with what's going on in America that he should not be a viable choice for president. He is basically saying that 2/3rds of that 47% are a liability because they don't make enough money to be required to pay income taxes although they work for a wage and pay payroll taxes as well as state and local taxes. He says they feel entitled to free health care even though many buy health insurance through their employer. I can see why he feels as though they are a liability since they don't make enough money simply because of the Bush policies which he plans to emulate that cut their earnings and force many of them to be laid off from their jobs.

Romney says he could do better but his track record is to close plants in this country and send the work to China. I don't see how that helps anyone but Romney.

Your statements are totally false. Obama has spent more than all the previous Presidents combined to the tune of $5 TRILLION! Taxes have nothing to do with spending? To stay within in your means they do, but you're right, under this President they don't because he prefers the Chinese Credit Card, never mind that it costs more to use but it's more convenient. With the Card, he doesn't have to worry about available funds.

You can do arithmetic? Great. Can you be logical? If you have a body of men who are habitual spenders and have exhausted all the tax funds they are responsible for, would it be logical to increase their revenue so they can continue their ways, or should you contain the spending and start cutting their debt? Which avenue will get you to that balanced budget you speak of?

Also, if the implication is to give a "tax cut", to whom should that be directed? Would it make sense to give it to those who don't pay a tax (we're talking income tax), or should it be to those who pay the majority of the tax? Which is fair and practical?

Vince, can you do the math??? If it were true that Obama has spent $5 trillion (which is debatable that it was all Obama's doings) and the national debt is $15 trillion then take the 5 from 15 and you have $10 trillion from the other presidents combined.

The problem with your math and the math of the rest of those on the right is you fail to see that the major problem is the debt that Bush left Obama has to have interest paid on it to the tune of $380 billion a year when Obama took office.

Another thing you fail to understand is that the wars and defense budget that Bush started has to be paid at another $711 billion not counting the rebuilding of Iraq.

Add those up and you come up with nearly a trillion dollars a year extra that was caused by Bush every year under Obama's term. Then you add the piss poor economy Bush left Obama with tax cuts for the wealthy it comes out that there is very little money to run the government including paying the worthless POS we call a congress.

Here's what I don't understand about Romney's statement about the 47% who pay no Federal income tax:

When I was in high school, a long time ago, we had a unit in math class called "set theory."

Romney says that the set who pay no Federal income tax is identical to the set who will vote for Obama, and is thus lost to him.

What about the people who do pay Federal income tax and will vote for Obama?

What about wealthy Democrats and Independents?

What about working, salaried Democrats and Independents?

Not the lazy, moochers who think they are entitled to food, housing and medical care for goodness sake!

What is there in Romney's rhetoric or policies (insofar as they have been made known to us) that is attractive to that set of voters who are leaning towards the Liberal agenda and do pay Federal income tax?

As so often happens, I am puzzled by Romney's assertion that the 47% who pay no Federal income tax is the same 47% who seem to be committed Liberals.

Must be he believes that anyone who does pay Federal income tax is a Conservative.

Therefore, he has already got the election in the bag with 53% of the vote, no?

                        Madeline,

The bottom line is that it doesn't really matter. Romney was simply using hyperbole (something anyone on the Vine should be incredibly familiar with) to try to get potential donors to contribute to the cause. It wasn't meant to be factually accurate, it was intended to convey the idea that he needed the money to go after the undecided voters.

Thank you for catching me doing the same thing I accused Noncoms of, I was wrong and I apologize, I am guilty of using a sound bite without doing my homework. So let me make my point using information from PolitiFact of New Jersey.

Previous 43 Presidents total Public Debt $6.307 Trillion Jan 20, 2009
                          Total Debt $10.60 Trillion

                          Obama
Projected end of fiscal 2013 Public Debt $12.636 Trillion Sept , 2013 (Obama + = $6.329 Trillion) One Term
                          Total Debt $17.5 Trillion

If you feel this is good for America, give him another 4 years and let's see if he can out do himself.

                              Not even close!

Romney wins by landlslide popular vote with 53% and also racks up 320 electoral votes vs barry obrainless with 218....sorry!

University of Colorado Professors Ken Bickers and Michael Berry (both DEMODORKS) have quite a set of bragging rights up their sleeve – namely, they’ve devised a mathematical model of the Electoral College that has predicted every Presidential race correctly since Ronald Reagan won the Presidency in 1980.

And despite recent polls showing the presidential race deadlocked both nationally and in key swing states, Bickers and Berry‘s model shows a race that isn’t even close. According to them, not only will Mitt Romney win, but he will win big, taking 320 Electoral Votes to President Obama’s 218 – a result almost as decisive as President Obama’s win against Senator John McCain in 2008.

To predict the race’s outcome, the model uses economic indicators from all 50 states and it shows 320 electoral votes for Romney and 218 for Obama, according to The Associated Press. The model also suggests that Romney will win every state currently considered a swing state which includes Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Colorado.

Ticked off in Ohio, that University of Colorado poll/study has already been debunked along with their methodology. Using their new model, they are falsly advertising the claim they have "predicted the last 8 elections correctly". They went through the past 30 years of elections and used their flawed method to "predict" or force their method to conform to the results! Bull@!$%#! They haven't predicted anything yet-it's a new model filled with some very huge flaws. It's a total bull@!$%# methodology. Go ahead and hang your hopes on it. I'll stick with Nate Silver@538 each and every time.

                              Good Morning to all.

I’m not going to gloat as you, the usual childish lefties have don time after time. I have been warning you of surprises that would be coming out this week. I also told you that the ones about Obama and his administration would be more damaging.

In reality Obama and his administration have lied about how things came down in Libya, but it does not stop there. The tape on Obama really saying how he feels on re-distribution and how to the government could accomplish it.

Care to wonder why we have not had a recovery, why we are still at 8.1 unemployment, why are we at such a high debt? Never let a crisis go without taking advantage of it?

Guess what lefties (and you know who you are), The big surprise is yet to come out.

I will ask those that do not think like my fellow Liberals (and you know who you are) not to rub it in for them. These kids have no other life than to post their lies on this site.

The only poll I look at is Rasmussen. They predicted the Wisconsin recall vote almost exactly while the Huff Post, Daily Kos, NBC, CBS, etc. all had Walker losing.

They also nailed the Brown senate election in Mass a few years ago when the liberal polls had the other guy winning.

And most importantly, they were dead on when Bush was losing in all the liberal polls in 2000 and 2004.

They didn't tighten up and become 'accurate' until 4 days prior to the election. All summer of 2008 they had McCain ahead or tied. Even THIS week in 2008 = Deadheat,...

Rass needs it to be a 'race' to keep the pubbies from jumping over a ledge. Which this thread today indicates is a possible outcome if the heads a popping doesn't kill 'em first.

People, ask yourself, Why is there a poll everyday? . . . . . . Why does the Media continue to put a poll in your face everyday of the week? Because they want to reassure you that THEIR CANDIDATE, Obama is in front and going to win. They are sending you repetitive signals so you'll be good little sheep and follow their lead.

Notice how the Media takes a shot at Romney every chance they get? It's by design folks. They must be awfully worried because the bu rage is escalating.

Romney's awkwardness is because he's not a career politician, he's a stellar businessman but his upbringing gets in the way of him being "your typical politician". Those of you who come down on him hard do so for a variety of reasons, but mostly because he is wealthy you are not. Is he flawless, NO.

What history tells us about politicians out of Chicago, one needs to be careful. Ever hear of beware of smiling faces? The voters don't want to hear about the pain they must endure to get this country back on track, but it's not going to happen any other way, we also know that is a historical fact.

You're being bated; be careful what you ask for because if you get it, it comes with a ludicrous price tag.

What becomes clear from revelations this week is that "Mitt Romney the CEO" is getting in the way of "Mitt Romney the Presidential Hopeful".

Summarily dismissing 47% of the country as people who are never going to vote for him and therefore he can't worry about them? That's a CEO talking. If 47% aren't going to follow you in the business world you can fire them and get rid of the problem. You don't have that option as President. If you believe in your ideas then you need to work on that 47% and try your best to explain why you are right.

I'm curious, though, why more isn't being made about Mr. Romney's comments about the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Am I mistaken or did Mr. Romney just throw up his hands and say there's nothing he can really do about it so why bother? Again, that's a CEO talking. As CEO, you can pick and choose your path and which projects you want to take on as a company. If something is going to be too challenging, you have the option to simply pass on a project. You don't have that option as President...and the GOP has no right to point a finger at President Obama for what they call "leading from behind" when on the issue of Israelis and Palestinians Mr. Romney has chosen to give up and not lead at all.

Once upon a time, I wondered what it would be like to have a CEO elected President and to see what it would be like if this nation were run more like a business. If Mr. Romney is any indication, no, thank you, I'll pass.

This candidate and his backers' strategies were failed from the start. They believed they could buy the White House in a hostile takeover like Bain, and once that happened, they'd have a friendly CEO to manipulate the country to benefit Adelson and the Koch Brothers.

Turns out the American people don't want to sell out. Wrongme badly underestimated the moral compass of his own country. This is understandable, because not having any morals himself, he has nothing to compare it with.

DaNoid, great points. On Israel and Palestine, Romney said he'd kick the ball down the field.

Bobster, the United State is NOT a company; it cannot be run as if it were. Republicans see everything through the prism of private business.

Why is it so many private businesses demand tax payer "freebies" to entice them to expand or build a new facility in the area? Iowa's GOPer Gov Branstad just gave $110 million of Iowa tax-payer dollars to an Egyptian firm to build a fertilizer plant in southeast Iowa. Sure, it will create jobs but honestly, why is it necessary to "bribe" private business to do what they should do automatically. While Branstad cuts education and cuts taxes for the wealthy, he gives corporate welfare to an Egyptian business.

While I personally don't advocate taking peoples votes away, I do think it's a conflict of interest for these people not paying federal income tax to have a say in who does pay it and in how much they do.

So...please tell us where is your logic in supporting MITT ROMNEY?

It's been fun to see Willard fumble the football. What's even more funny is that Carters grandson spilled the beans. Romneys true colors came out in the videos and they aren't Red White and Blue. He's not American if you know what I mean.

Why does Gallup and Rasmussen show the race much tighter than the polls suggested by NBC? Why the big push to escalate the rhetoric on the NBC website? Even the President and the propaganda artists know this election is too close to call.

Statistics 101, "TexasT"...the problem with any opinion poll is that your sample is always 100% of people who cared enough to respond to the poll and people respond to different polling groups in different ways.

Are there people who respond to Rasmussen and Gallup who don't respond to NBC/WSJ? Are there people who repond to NBC/WSJ who don't respond to Rasmussen and Gallup? The answer to both is obviously "yes".

Well, I can tell you one way to muddy the results-

NBC published the result of the choice of likely voters. All well and good.

If you read through the poll, you see that, for all REGISTERED voters, the breakdown was democrats +5. This is not far off the mark- the electorate is projected to be democrats +4. Again, all well and good- however. . .

Given that they are trumpeting the poll of Likely voters, we should be given the breakdown of that group, rather than that of registered voters. That it is missing leads me to conclude that the likely voter pool was skewed more heavily democratic.

Turning in a poll like this in a class, with that information missing, would earn a failing grade.

You just have to laugh at conservatives whining about the polls. Now these same republicans love to quote Rasmussen (known to over sample republicans) or Gallup which rises and sinks depending on the day's news. No doubt if the NBC/WSJ poll had shown Romney with a lead--it would clearly be a poll done right in the eyes of conservative poll dancers!

benramz2 - you are not well informed my friend!

                                  — 53.6 percent of households pay the federal income tax. Presumably Romney is okay with these folks.

                                  — 28.3 percent of households pay no federal income tax, but they do pay the payroll tax. That means they don’t need Mitt Romney to convince them to “take personal responsibility and care for their lives.” They already have jobs. Their average payroll tax % is 16.9%, Romney paid 13% in 2010...

-Most of the households in this group don’t pay any federal income tax because they qualify for enough deductions that their income tax liability has shrunk to zero. The Tax Policy Center gives an example of “a couple with two children earning less than $26,400. They get an $11,600 standard deduction and four exemptions of $3,700, and that takes their liability to zero.” Indeed, it’s worth noting that many of these deductions and credits were part of the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts, which Romney wants to extend.

                                  — 10.3 percent of households pay no federal income tax because they’re retired and elderly. Many retirees aren’t taxed on their Social Security benefits, which they earned by paying into the system over many years. If Mitt Romney secretly thinks that these households are all irresponsible freeloaders, he has a weird way of showing it, as he keeps insisting that he doesn’t want to cut Medicare or Social Security benefits for those over the age of 65.

                                  — That leaves 6.9 percent of households which are non-elderly and have incomes less than $20,000 per year and aren’t paying the payroll tax. These poorer households pay neither income taxes nor payroll taxes. Perhaps Romney thinks that they should all pay more in federal taxes. It’s hard to say. But this is also a much smaller fraction of Americans.

So, you would agree with Governor Romney that his plan to reduce Federal Income Tax by 20% would have no effect on them, right?

Do you think that breaking it down makes the point any less valid? His plan to reduce Federal Income Tax by 20% will not sway their vote. They may already be voting for or against him, but his tax plan will have no affect.

People already know that Governor Romney has the experience and knowledge to assume the office of the President. They know that he has a track record of successfully turning around problem situations. He would make an excellent President and would certainly be a major improvement over the White House resident.

Actually Governor Romney's new Tax plan increases the tax base for the lower income families. People that don't make enough to get by are going to get hit with a higher tax % that they have to pay or they will see less deductions like child credits and earned income credit. The upper class tax base will Decrease 6.9% while the bottom 20% of the income spectrum will Increase 2.7%.

Sorry to use facts and numbers that have been published by Romney's web site but truth is truth, he obviously is not concerned about anyone but those making over $200,000/year, that is the cut off in his plan that defines the middle class, the middle class to Romney starts at $200,000.00/year.

facts and numbers are a bad thing. Decrease the tax base by 20%, that decrease is NOT across the board, it does favor his country club buddies and donors. Yeah, I think it is important when the potential President of the United States says that 47% of the country considers themselves "Victims" and are "Entitled" to housing, and FOOD and health care and he is not concerned with them, yeah I think a breakdown proves what a fricken boob Romney is and who he cares about.

As far as Romney being ready to be president, why because he made millions buying and selling companies, sending jobs over seas and "Firing People? Or because he ran Minnesota into the ground as Governor? Which quality do you think makes him Ready? Maybe his disdain for America since he keeps his money hidden in the Caymans and in Swiss accounts, why wouldn't the potential president of the united states invest in America, if you believe in America invest in her, if not what the hell are you doing running for office Mitt?

Nothing but disingenuous demagoguery. You and others know full well that what he was talking about was trying to get people to vote for him and that statement indicates that he is not concerned with trying to get that group of people to try to vote for him.

It's obvious that you are just parroting the DNC talking points.... you can't even get the state that he governed correct - it was Massachusetts. If you actually took the time to look into the truth about Governor Romney you would find that he made millions by working with companies to make them succeed, not by making them fail. The fact that some of them didn't work out is a shame, but the vast majority of them did.

Yes. It does. Perhaps you missed the part where this is a tight race. If you think otherwise, check with the Obama campaign. I'm sure they'll tell you the same thing. And, he is heading down the back stretch with a significant advantage in available money.

It seems pretty naive to me to think that a Republican that was able to win the Governorship in Massachusetts (of all places) and a moderate that was able to win the Republican nomination against a host of conservative challengers, is anything other than extremely competent when it comes to competing in the political arena.

If you really want to laugh at something, you should consider laughing at the foreign policy debacle that is shaking the credibility of the President's foreign policy. Or, perhaps you could laugh at the abysmal jobs reports that continue to come out each week and each month, shaking even further any remote credibility that anyone could possibly have in the President's ability to deal with our economy.

and he is not concerned with them,

Nothing but disingenuous demagoguery. You and others know full well that what he was talking about was trying to get people to vote for him

No, he said they believed that they are "Victims" and are "Entitled to Health care, Food, everything... I know he was referencing not trying to get their vote but he flat out said they believe they are "victims" and that he would never be able to convince them to take responsibility for themselves! Sounds like to me he has no use for that 47% he referenced!

                                      Robert,

Again. He was working a room full of potential donors and trying to get contributions. What he did was engage in hyperbole and say that 47% of the people wouldn't vote for him and then cast them in a negative light using stereotypes so that the listeners would agree that those were, in fact, people that would not be swayed.

Sounds like to me he has no use for that 47% he referenced!

Why? Are you somehow confusing his off-the-cuff remarks to potential donors with a policy statement. And, for the record, since we all know that there is no group that actually fits the demographic he identified, just what 47% would that be?

It looks like many republicans are now going through buyer’s remorse for picking this foolish man, Willard Romney, the talking lying buffoons, as the Republican choice for President of the United States.

Also, Virginia is looking good for President Obama!

Once again, Bob, you appear to have missed the point.

Rich Lowry, David Brooks, Bill Kristol, Daniel Foster, Linda McMahon, Joe Scarborough...conservatives, all of them...they all came out with criticisms of Mr. Romney's comments about the 47%. These are people who are supposed to be cheering you on to victory on FOX News and The Drudge Report and in The Wall Street Journal. Instead, Mr. Romney has left them collectively shaking their heads.

You would love to think so Job1, yet no one has slacked away from Romney in favor of Obama despite these supposed "gaffes" that NBC is clearly escalating over recent weeks. But keep telling yourself whatever you need to convince yourself that the President has it in the bag. NBC is the laughing stock of journalistic integrity.

So Bob McDonnell who won't be VP, what is FOX News? Oh, that's right, the GOP is a wholly-owned subsidiary of FOX. Never mind. Amusing, GOPers come to MSNBC's web site because FOX shut theirs down --too much hate and violence--accuse MSNBC of leaning left yet they see nothing wrong with right-wing media. No wonder these folks vote republican, fair and balanced media choices is only acceptable if those media choices express the GOPers "we're right and the left is wrong" ideology.

It took you six months (over 180 days) to fill out 150 apps? That's extremely low.

Romney's campaign is imploding....they have to spend each and every day walking back, denying, "explaining" what their backassward nominee said.

According to Norquist Mitt got his issues "mixed up" at the fund raiser.....wow...Mitt can't even keep things straight when he is talking to a friendly audience....how will he ever manage in a debate???

Even many Repubs are tired of defending the indefensible, tired of trying to put lipstick on a pig, tired of wasting their money on a losing campaign.

That's OK Repubs it will soon be over and you'll have 4 more years to rant and wail about President Obama.

"Back in May, we noticed in our national and state polls that President Obama was at or near 48% in these surveys, which represented a sort of tipping point for an incumbent president. You're very close to that all-important 50%, but still not there. Well, our latest round of national and state polls conducted after the conventions now shows Obama at or near 50%"

Yes, since Obama didn't reach 50%, "we" just oversampled more Democrats, to please our boss David Axelrod.

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovels, mount your #$%$ and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land."

Nearly 75 years ago, (when Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your #$%$, and light up a Camel, this is the Promised Land."

Today, Congress has stolen your shovel, taxed your #$%$, raised the price of Camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

I was so depressed last night thinking about Health Care Plans, the economy, the wars, lost JObs, Savings, Social Security, Retirement funds, etc. I called a Suicide Hotline. I had to press 1 for English. I was connected to a call center in Pakistan. I told them I was suicidal. They got excited and asked if I have a Back Pack!!.

This for all the poor, mistreated rich people who pay income taxes. Just completely ignore the fact that the top 10% of Americans control over 70% of the wealth in this country . . . leaving the bottom 90% to survive on less than 30% of the income.

No, the victims are the rich folks who have to pay TAXES on their horded "income" . . . at least the parts they are not hiding in overseas tax havens . . . poor babies.

I mean, all these freeloaders who go to work for these poor mistreated souls for wages that don't even keep up with the cost of living are just leaches who can't seem to take "responsibility" for themselves . . . I mean, clearly these CEOs are earning their huge salaries by working hard at figuring out where overseas to ship these already low paying jobs so they can make even MORE money . . . the least these low paid loser workers could do is say thank you.

                                          Damn.

ok, say you believe what you just said about the President of the United States, and say I agree with you, what is the alternative to Obama? It's not Romney, the GOP is not trying to get Romney elected they only want their party elected, they want their ideology to become the law of the land and that my friend is not an alternative the Average American wants.

History has shown when a party decides who is worthy, what religion and beliefs are the right one's, the right race, only the healthy are accepted and only the true followers of the party are allowed to live under the umbrella of the Governments protection then you are permitted into the Party, the rest became members of work camps. Sound familiar at all?

so I watched the video and listened to the sentence and nothing was mentioned about the people that "Obamacare" has already helped.

No more pre-existing conditions, my mother-in-law had a heart problem and when she retired with her husband at age 60 she lost health insurance. She was unable to get any coverage because of her pre-existing condition, her only hope was waiting for medicare. She had to go to the hospital one time and it cost them $125,000.00. She could not even afford the medication, she died at 64 years old.

As for me personally, I work always have always will but starting in Sept 2011 I had a hip surgery, it went bad and by the time all was said and done I had gotten an infection in my bone and in the course of 9 months I had to have 14 total surgeries. No fault of my own, nothing I could have done but insurance was billed a total of more than $1.3 Million which was way past my lifetime medical but because of Obamacare I still have insurance. My point here is this could happen to anyone, even you and what would you do? Run out of lifetime coverage with a pre-existing condition, you may as well just give up, thank God Obamacare helped me to get better.

The "bad" part of Obamacare is what trying to make sure everyone has insurance? Isn't that maybe a way to decrease the need for medicaid and government funded health care? Lower taxes for you maybe, less people on Gov aid? Is it the fact that I can decide to not pay health care insurance premiums for my employees, I pay a $2000.00 per employee fine to the Government but the savings for me is about $7000.00 per employee per year even after the $2000.00 fine.

I get the Every man, woman, and child for themselves attitude the GOP has, hell the Koch brothers will just invest in insurance companies and get even richer! Otherwise, it is time that insurance companies be held accountable and price be regulated in the US, Medical issues are the number one cause of personal Bankruptcy files in the US.

Insurance companies have been regulated by the states for years and have to justify their increases. They also have dictated to the insurance companies what must be included, which is part of the reason the prices have gone up over the years.

                                            Yo Mammy & JC

ya really should get educated on the insurance industry. find out who controls cost and regulates how much we pay versus how much is allowed. JC, what exactly are the regulations on insurance companies by states? I really would like to hear specifics not gibberish. Premiums? Maximum Lifetime Coverage? Pre-Existing? What they pay providers?

And the idea of Free market driving the price of insurance down, that is pretty damn funny. The old economic theory of Supply and demand sound familiar? If this were the case the more we use gasoline the lower the price would be right? Free Market Insurance is Wall Street and the GOP forcing everyone out into Free Market Shopping, especially as a senior in the future would be like throwing chum to sharks. There is no regulation on health care insurance, auto and home yeah but not health care...

God forbid anything ever happens to any of you but if it did and it were catastrophic I hope no lifetime maximum causes you to loose a leg or pass of a heart attack because you can't get insured because of a pre-existing condition.

Don't you understand, getting everyone insured under Obamacare would drive the cost of medicaid and government assisted health care down.

                                            Obamacare = $1.5 Trillion over 10 years

Medicaid = by 2013 will cost an estimated $500,000 Billion/year, by 2017 estimated at $767,000 Billion

                                            do the math

                                              Exit Stage Right

                                              From the article above:

Here's Peggy Noonan in the Wall Street Journal: "I think there is a broad and growing feeling now, among Republicans, that this thing is slipping out of Romney's hands."

It's obvious to most Americans that President Obama is fast becoming one of the best presidents this great nation has ever had.

This president spends more time being coooool than being a president....from telephone interviews with "a pimp with a limp", interviews with David Letterman, JayZ, Beyonce, playing golf and fundraising.

I'm sick of a president who wants to get down and hang with the cool people. I want a president that does his job.

This man is not the everyday guy like he would like to portray...HE IS ONE OF THE POWERFUL MEN IN THE WORLD and needs to set his priorites as such.

PO'ed....no the GOP can't pass anything because of your garbage Democratic party in the Senate and White house.

If you scum block every bill that the GOP passes on the budget and the economy, then you can't blame them for anything.

Unlike 2009-2010, when the Dems passed their "stimulus" which failed to get us on a steady, strong upward path towards recovery, Dodd-Frank and Obamacare.

The Dems policies are still in place on the economy, the Repubs' haven't been tried yet, cuz the Dems have blocked it all.

Yeah JC, just like here in Texas. There are jobs to be had and if you want to support a family come and get two or three of the jobs. Texas average salary is just under $13.00/hour, that is a total of all income levels in the second largest state in the country.

The 47% Map, did you see all of the Southern "RED" states from Texas to Florida, all typical GOP Red States. They contain about 67% of the 47% Mitt Romney was speaking of. Red States produce typically low wage jobs for a lot of people. The big industries here, retail and restaurant workers. The majority of job openings here are retail and restaurants, not high paying oil field or gas field workers, hell the highest paid of the Labor force is the Wind Farm workers which Texas receives millions of federal dollars for Green Energy initiatives.

                                              ChestyPuller

the GOP house has not passed one CLEAN BILL since 2010, every single bill they passed was a GOP Poison Pill Loaded with GOP ideology and demands, nothing like a clean bill proposing jobs and say infrastructure not unless it included jobs and Cut Social Security, Cut Medicare, Cut Medicaid, yeah demands like that. Like me passing a law saying you have to give me your paycheck every other week and I will create a new job, would you vote for that? You know the concept, how did the GOP and the Right like Obamacare being passed? That was a Democrat Poison Pill Bill, it did not taste very good to too many on the right, see what I mean?

The reason the wages in Texas are so low (I will give an example) is because of the Failed immigration policies of our country. Houston being a sanctuary city doesn't help either. The average plumber in Texas is making approx. 17.00 hourly due to illegals in the construction trades. Not to mention the quality stinks. You hire illegals and your overhead goes down. Why pay an American when you can hire Manuel Labor?
