NBC/WSJ poll: Obama's approval on foreign policy drops

After last week's political firestorm over attacks on U.S. embassies in Egypt and Libya, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that President Obama's approval rating on foreign policy has dropped five points since August.

In the poll, 49 percent approve of the president's job in handling foreign policy, versus 46 percent who disapprove.

Last month, 54 percent said they approved of his foreign-policy handling.

Much of that drop can be attributed to increased political polarization just seven weeks until Election Day.

Indeed, 86 percent of Democrats approve of Obama on foreign policy, compared with just 10 percent of Republicans. Yet in August, nearly twice as many Republicans -- 19 percent -- approved.

Still, in the current NBC/WSJ poll, only 41 percent of independents approve of Obama's foreign-policy handling, versus 53 percent who did so last month.

The full NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted Sept. 12-16 of 900 registered voters (including 270 by cell phone) and which has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.3 percentage points -- will be released at 6:30 pm ET.

FR: Much of that drop can be attributed to increased political polarization just seven weeks until Election Day.

Much of the drop can be attributed to the fact that the Middle-East is on fire because it has become painfully obvious that Obama doesn't have a clue about what is going on in that region.

Maybe Barry can explain it all for us during his Letterman appearance.

Tell us again Barry. Tell us again how you killed Osama. Just keep spiking that football, it doesn't bother those fundamentalists in Libya, Egypt, Pakistan, Syria, or Iran. They just love hearing it over and over from you. Those chants from those fundamentalists during their recent attacks of "There are a million Osamas!!!", just ignore them. Karl Rove probably planted that propaganda in their little minds. Besides, what matters most is your campaign rhetoric, you have an election to run. Priorities you know.

For the administration to deny that the attack in Libya wasn't an act of terrorism is simply denial to the nth degree.

The words from our president didn't invoke strength and resolve for the American way of life. He didn't even mention the actions that took place in Egypt. The host nation is responsible for the security of the embassies. There is a token security force within the embassy confines. There was zero rhetoric that was leadership material.

As was noted earlier...having the vice president of the country running around shouting Osama bin Laden is dead and GM is alive sounds a lot like school kids on a playground playing tag, screaming, "You can't catch me! Nah nah nah nah nah!" Biden's rant would get a 15 yard personal foul penalty for over celebrating or taunting in the end zone. A shining example of diplomacy.

Let's not forget the president's "dis" of Netanyahu. Nothing like stating to the world that your too busy campaigning to take the time out to talk to an ally that you claim to support. Not exactly where most people would expect the priorities to be.

The largest failure is believing that all these uprisings are related to a poorly made film depicting Mohammed in a blasphemous manner. The cause of these actions is the deep rooted hatred for our way of life. They do not believe in our freedom of speech; freedom of religion; or equality for women. The president actually believes that the Muslim world no longer hates America because he is the president. Our president, the narcissist. How naive.

    Bob,

Likely voters in Virginia favor Obama 52 to 44. Among all voters, the president is up 50 to 43 percent, identical to his margin in a survey in early May.

Obama’s steady lead suggests that an unprecedented barrage of TV ads and dozens of in-person visits have yet to change the bottom line in the key battleground state.

It's going to take even more of an effort to get Obama out of office since the media is his lapdog. They all repeat the same Obama talking points over and over and over. This article is a rarity -- that NBC would report ANYTHING negative about Obama is shocking. We've got ZERO foreign policy, which means the US isn't leading the world as it did before Obama came along, we've got an economy in shambles, with minorities being hurt the absolute worst, and what does the media echo over and over? "Wah, Wah, Romney is so cruel to say half the people in the US don't pay taxes!!!" We're living in the Bizarro World.

I hate to be the one to tell you but Romney/Ryan will soon be shown to be the big losers they really are, these two radicals are not conservative, they are extremists, BIG difference. My guess is your just another misguided Republican that will vote against their own best interest in November. Don't you know that those crude remarks Romney made at the fundraiser were actually directed at people like you? Romney is not smart enough to realize he was insulting his own voters! I cannot for the life of me figure out why the level of hatred is so high against the President, and so accepting of a mystery man like Romney, who refuses to release his tax returns, refuses to tell the American people his "plans" for them, supports voter suppression to get him elected, and lies incessantly about just about everything. What in the world is there to like, or believe, about Romney, or Ryan? It would seem that Republicans would have to check their brains at the door when voting for Romney/Ryan, especially since your guy thinks so little of all who would actually vote for him. You are going to vote for the problem in America, not the solution, a extremely rich guy that made his money on the backs of people like yourself, and a totally dedicated follower of Ayn Rand who hated the middle class, seniors and the poor, Go figure!

But at least the few who care about foreign policy... have noticed Obama is a complete failure. I am beginning to lose faith in humanity... if America votes for the downfall of our own country by re-electing this failure... I guess humanity is done. How does oversampling help one Party/candidate over the other?

I can see it either way. If our President is perceived to have a solid lead it will encourage Republicans to GOTV while Dems will stay at home.

On the other hand if the polls show our President to have a solid lead it could discourage Conservatives and they will stay home on Election Day.

As I see it the advantage for oversampling goes to no one.

It is NOT that they can't handle the truth, they don't care about the truth. The President of Libya came out and admitted it was a pre-planned coordinated attack by terrorists, that they deliberately set into motion on 9/11. It has been admitted by OUR intelligence community that there was intel that let them know "something" was in the works. Now that Americans have died suddenly it was "not actionable" intel. According to who???? Our inexperienced president?, then Lord help us all. The media is culpable in that they don't dare tell the truth anymore, they are so in the tank for President Obama it is absolutely sickening. People you have to get off of MSNBC, Fox and CNN, and do your own research, we aren't getting the truth from the media, we haven't in a long time and probably never will again.

Can one imagine how the GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" would handle Foreign Policy? Oh my GOD! First of all this "Cognitively Disabled" War Hawk would order the US Military to bomb all of these nations. Which nation would he want to bomb first? That would depend on how he rolls the dice in his quiet room. How many foreign civil wars would the GOP/RNC "War Hawk" get our nation into? Again! It depends on how he either spins the bottle or how he shakes the dice. In London, the GOP/RNC "Speculator and Chief" was so "Alien" to our best ally in the world. The President is not going to panic, and he not going to let the "Radical Religious Right Wingers" change his Foreign Policy Philosophies. The President is not stupid enough to bomb every nation that is in civil unrest. The President is not "Emotionally Unstable" enough to send in our troops to every Middle Eastern Nation that insults us. The President is not ignorant enough to let other nations or their leader to dictate US Foreign Policy. Now "Romulian Romney" is very dumb enough to get America into at least Five more wars, and he is ignorant enough to make our nation more vulnerable to foreign attacks. "Romulian Romney" is ruthless enough to bomb Iran and North Korea. The President is very aware that our nation is not able to afford economically more wars. The Presdient is very clear on the issue of how physically depleted our Armed Forces are. The President is very intellectual in regards to how and when to put the power of the United States into action. The President is very clear that the US is not able to be the only "Police Force" in the world. The President is very clear that it is vital to work with our allies on all levels at all times. The "Bush Doctrine" of going it alone is a Cognitively Disabled, and a Emotionally Disturbed Foreign Policy Of Failure.

Polsters can't possibly think Democrat enthusiasm is as high or higher when compared to 2008! Get real, the lasted data shows sampling of D vs R should be roughly equal. Obama's amateur, fumbling attempts at foreign policy have been an embarrassment to himself and to the US. People are finally beginning to realize it. A good example of Obama's foreign policy incompetence is the Palestinian statehood issue.

First, he publicly and loudly affirmed his support for a Palestinian state. This had the predictable effect of encouraging the Palestinians to seek their own separate state. Then, he had to order his Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, to veto any UN resolution that might actually create a Palestinian state, in order to salvage the Jewish vote.

Most presidents (not all) have had sense enough to be consistent in the messages they send to the international community. Reversals, like Obama's, only create an atmosphere of uncertainty and distrust. One can easily imagine how Obama's blundering could have started a violent increase in Middle East hostilities.

Romney suggested the administration's condemnation of the anti-Muhammed video was equivalent to "an apology for America’s values." Does Romney believe that cruddy video celebrates America's values? Are those values supposed to include blind hatred and extreme prejudice? Is hideously bad judgement now a cherished American value? Apparently, according to Romney, hatred is just as American as the flag and apple pie. That's very strange, coming from a man whose own Mormon religion has often been a target for intolerance. What an odd world-view Romney and the Republicans possess! I'm not eager to see them back in control of the military, the CIA, and the State Department. Nor do I cherish the thought of Mitt Romney's finger hovering above the nuclear launch button. It's no laughing matter...too scary...

Much of the drop can be attributed to the fact that the Middle-East is on fire because it has become painfully obvious that Obama doesn't have a clue about what is going on in that region.

Thank God we have Flipp Romney and Lyan Ryan to tell us! Whew! Oh wait! They have 17 of Dubbya's advisers advising them....CRAP! I'd keep air support over NY year round IF he EVER makes it too the oval office. Flipp/Lyan 2012! Bush 2.0....look out NY! :-) @Hagran1

In regards to the Romney statement..the percentage he mentioned are those who do not pay taxes, who vote for Obama and will not vote for him

So that includes himself? He pays a lot less than I do...well I think he does...the tax cheat won't show us....then again...I don't have tax havens all over the world either. :-) @Hagran1

As usual, the biased media and lefties are wrong about him including vets, and folks on soc.sec. - those ARE taxable income.

Sorry. Vets AND Social security recipients DON'T pay income taxes. Your either an idiot. Or just an idiot. sorry. :-) @Hagran1

Sorry about you post that Social Security benefits are not taxable. The tax is based on total income, and up to 85% of the benefits a person receives are taxed at the person's full tax rate. Read the tax code before you post.
