TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Rallying the college vote, first lady Michelle Obama commended the "energy and passion" of young voters during stops in Florida Monday -- and cranked the pressure up, too.
"All of the progress we've made, it is on the line," Obama said inside a packed arena on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee.
"As my husband has said, this election's going to be even closer than the last one," she added. "And it could all come down to what happens in a few key battleground states. Yes -- like Florida. And folks here in Florida, you all know a little something about close elections, don't you?"
It wasn't Obama's first reference to the George W. Bush era.
Earlier, she implored the crowd not to "turn around and go back" to economic policies that she said "got [the United States] into trouble in the first place."
Florida is clearly part of that mission.
The First Lady's visit may be an indication that whatever ground President Barack Obama has gained here and in other battleground states is going to be guarded closely.
An NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll last week showed the president holding a lead of five points on Republican nominee Mitt Romney among likely voters in Florida and Virginia, and a lead of seven points in Ohio.
"From now until November the 6th, we're going to need every single one of you to work like you've never worked before," Obama said. She urged students to take advantage of early voting in order to volunteer on election day.
Hours before the first lady arrived in Tallahassee, a flap blew up over a surreptitious video that captured Romney at a fundraiser this year, telling donors that supporters of Barack Obama are "dependent upon government."
Obama didn't mention the controversy here in Tallahassee, and instead painted a broad picture of values she said she and her husband share.
"You have to be driven by the struggles, hopes and dreams of all of the people you serve," she said. "As president you need a strong inner compass, a core commitment to your fellow citizen, that’s how you make the right decisions for this country. That’s what it takes to be a leader."
Late Monday, Romney said during a press conference that his remarks were not "elegantly stated" but reflect his philosophical differences with the White House.
"This is something I talk about a good deal in rallies and speeches and so forth, which is the president and I have very different approaches to the future of America," Romney said.
Obama campaign officials estimated 8,850 people showed up in Tallahassee. Earlier Monday, the first lady addressed students on the campus of the University of Florida, in Gainesville.

It's not just that Obama and Romney "have very different approaches to the future of America" as Romney states. It's that only Obama has any approach to the future at all. Romney, on the other hand, is aiming to take America back into the past. That's not the American way! We have always been a progressive people at heart. This is not the time for cowardice and hiding in some mythical better days of yore.

Really Joe? In the last 6 months, I've earned an equity adjustment and a merit raise. I'm close to paying off my home. Obama hasn't made that harder. He's working his hardest to help get our country on track without much help from the opposition. Most of us have no desire to be on welfare--but we don't see the needy as the main problem. If I recall, a lot of factors went into the recession of 2008/2009; having two unpaid-for wars along with tax cuts at the same time sure didn't help!

Why is it Republicans never take responsibility for how we got into this mess in the first place? Four more years and we'll all be on welfare? Guess you shouldn't have stupidly allowed George W. Bush to run the country for eight years, because when Bill Clinton left office, the budget was balanced. There are many down and out people who believe strongly in an old fashioned American ideal, people who are poor as a churchmouse but nonetheless spend their days sharing the few pennies they have with friends and strangers alike. Many poor people served and defended America proudly and loudly proclaim the beauty of America even though they suffer from long term war injuries and in many cases are homeless.
Many homeless people will be voting for less entitlements and a balanced budget because they believe in it. Many amoung the 47% know a liar when they hear one and will not vote for a liar. I do not believe people think Mitt Romney is a liar, rather they think he is a basically good willed American man sometimes a little out of touch. Many street people on the other hand have transformed against Obama and this time around believe he is a liar.
Florida senior people know it was Obama who pillaged Medicare to pay for ObamaCare and are keenly aware that healthcare is more expensive than it was 3-1/2 years ago, and access is worse. ObamaCare has been lose, lose so far as seniors are concerned, so far.
A valid question is which people are likely voters. The November election may come and go with many senior people and street people missing it. There are so many daily distractions just to survive.

While it is not easy - there are jobs out there to be had. My family has in the past four years experienced first hand being downsized (Twice) and having going through our savings and work on with our debts out as best as we could for up one time up to 9 months.
Those coming our of college have a few options such as you may need to move to where the jobs are, you may need to take a lower paying job, you may have to start networking prior to finishing your education and take an internship while going to school to make inroads. Now is this going to be possible for everyone? of course not - but by saying that four more years of a specific administration will be the end of the country is absolute defeatism and I don't believe that is what our founders believed. Democracy is not easy - we are not always going to agree - however - Americans have always come together to fight when things got tough and not pander to defeatism, but to compromise when needed and by putting Country First!

Your first paragraph is so true, it is also the last of your thoughts expressed here that is. Many homeless people will not be allowed to vote for anyone due to the policies established by the states republican governors and legislatures with their fake voter fraud laws. I, for one, believe that Romney is a liar. He is a draft dodger and he and his progeny have never put their lives on the line for this country. Romney has no "good will" for any other than the 1% of the 1% he is part of. He doesn't think of us, the "you people" his wife speaks of.
If it weren't for the ACA, my wifes' cancer would not be in remission today because we would not have any health insurance for her.

Romney-Ryan 2012 to take back America from the Progressives and the Radicals.
We've certainly heard many times from him that Mr. Obama has "made a college education more affordable" due to the interest rate cut that took place this year. The cost of the actual "college" experience has climbed thru the stratosphere in the last twenty years...why not, when the federal government guarantees that the tuition got paid whether the loan gets paid back or not.
The average savings for those who actually pay back their college loans amounts to less than a dollar per day. With so many colleges having tuitions up to and over $50,000 per year, I really don't think an extra 78 cents per day in one's pocket much changes the total expense of the college experience.
But I'm sure that line gets plenty of cheers from the children attending these campus speeches.
Really? Can you explain to everyone what that approach is, because NO ONE has heard it.

In all honesty, what makes Romney a better choice for fixing the economy? He is a business man and as far as I remember a country is not a business nor a corporation. No doubt Romney is a very successful businessman but in my view that does not make him the saviour of our economic problems. He made his company lots of money by acquiring and disintigrating other companies in need. I am not blaming the guy for it because at the in of the day its just BUSINESS. Everyone knows he is a smart person but unfortunately every aspect of his policies are just plain wrong. I am in fact of those who believe that mr. Romney would just bring us back to a period of time noone would like to be part of again. Sure our president is not perfect ( no president will ever be) but I can surely say that he is moving us in the right direction.

This is a minor story being sprayed all over the place so what has taken place in the Middle East over the past week is pushed under the rug. I wonder if Mrs. Obama spoke their standard campaign speech line that "America is once again respected within the international community"...an obvious falsehood after what's played across our television screens over the past week.
And just a wee bit more important of an event that a video that shows Mr. Romney speaking what is actually the truth about the votes he needs to go after. I tell you young people in Universities and Colleges in America, if you believe yourself to be a Christian then you cannot be affiliated with the democratic party. I realize that you are attending the very dephs of hell when you go to these instititions, I also realize that in todays world you need to have an education. I do not mean you should be a republican either, but the democratic party is now a playground filled with evil. As a Christian you cannot associate with a group who screams against God, and who condones murdering babies or condones homosexuality. I tell you it would be better if you were to deny being a Christian than to turn people away from God by calling yourself a child of God and then saying you agree with these evil things. I totally agree that we are tired of the third, fourth, fifth generational poverty that has created the welfare state as we know it. Republicans want to let them die in the desert; Democrats want to raise them like children.
#1 - we have to have a world-class elementary and secondary education system in this country and we don't. Our children are being educated in over-flow trailors without air-conditioning.
#2 - we have to make college educations affordable.
#3 - we have to provide non-degreed jobs with sustainable wages for the working class.
#4 - we have to make home ownership afforable.
#5 - This is going to kill the Republicans, but we have to eliminate the regulatory laws that protect banks and investors and leave the working class to hang.

Why do the Republicans think everyone on food stamps are unemployed? 1,400,000 vets and active duty military get food stamps. I have never been out of work but I have needed help from time to time even though I worked 60 hours a week. I have not paid much in income tax but I pay over 27% of my income in taxes. So I am a tax payer. Also Romney made a bunch of money at Bain, just think how much more he would have made if he had known what he was doing, I work for a Bain company and they made a lot of stupid mistakes.
Thank you Bobnstuff! Being poor =/= not trying hard enough. College graduated professionals have gotten laid off and found it hard to find work. I know lawyers who have been unemployed for longer than 6 months. It happens to everyone. If rich people get laid off, they have a safety net. If poor people are laid off, what do republicans honestly expect them to do? are they undeserving of a safety net too?

To generalize about almost half of the country does not a President make. When the President takes the Oath of Office he represents all of its citizens. He is responsible for every single one of us, to make sure that he has our back.
I don't trust a person that generalizes and doesn't care about me or my family. I and the majority of the Democratic party don't expect our Government to take care of us from the cradle to the grave. That is a line that the republicans have swollowed hook, line and sinker. We are Americans just like everyone else, however, we do think that Government can play a specific role in making the playing field level and the game fair, so that everyone has a chance at the American Dream not just the top 1% and their off spring.

Four days ago, the Obama administration started its third round of printing fiat money (currency that a government has declared to be legal tender, despite the fact that it has no intrinsic value and is not backed by reserves). $600 billion is the current estimate. Inflation is now inevitable.
Under Romney, inflation may be relatively mild; under Obama it will be brutal.
Those of you who are still planning to vote for Obama - what's your plan for when you see the buying power of your savings and income cut in half?

I have friends who will vote for Obama unfortunately but they are leaning towards not going to vote since the polls are showing Obama with the lead and they don't have to wait in the poll lines. Keep up with the polls declaring Obama the winner and his side will get a low turnout thus ensuring he is defeated.

This administration is responsible for the largest increase in college costs ever. This President came into office promising to cut the costs of a college education. Since he doesn't understand economics at all, all he has achieved is the opposite. It is so interesting that he and his wife use exactly the same words to describe what they want to do as they did 4 years ago. Why would anyone believe them again? I don't. The government takeover of the student loans has caused tuitions etc to increase. These guys just don't understand that government is the problem, not the answer when it comes to helping students. They live in the Utopia. Obama had rich Insurance mogul and a rich banker help to get him a scholarship at the best Prep school in Hawaii. He probably lied , as he did when he said he never used any other name than Barack Obama, when he went to college to get a foreign student tuition and help. He lies still when he feels he needs to and rarely tells the truth even when he doesn't have to lie. He cannot help himself. Michelle is problably the most radical first lady we have ever had in the White House. She wants to control what type of lettuce we eat. She wants to control what we can feed our own children for lunch. Even if they aren't obese. Yet, we only see them in ice cream stores and eating treats all the time. This is what Progressives do. They control the masses , "for their own good!". I personally don't believe that most students were ready to go out and vote for this man. Their brothers and sisters don't have jobs and aren't getting raises (unless of course they are in a union or contribute to Obama- tit for tat). They hopefully plan on working for a living and being free and creative. The government will not allow that to happen. They also understand that if their parents aren't working they will have to go out there and work. I hope we don't have a generation of Obama worshippers that think he is going to find something for them. HE isn't. If this Presidential candidate was Dan Quale instead of B. Obama, he would be losing by 20 points by now for what he has done to our educational system and to our economy.

Our job as worker bees is to go out and collect the nectar(taxes) and GIVE it to the bee hive(Government).
Now a bee hive(Government) must have a RULER to insure the nectar(taxes) is delved out "fairly" to the worker bees(that would be us). You see the biggest problem with giving all your nectar(taxes) to the bee hive(Government) is there must be a queen bee, who has the final say on what is deemed FAIR. And we all know the saying "absolute power CORRUPTS absolutely".
So you on the LEFT want Obama to become this Nations "Queen Bee". And you want the rest of us worker bees, to give our nectar to the bee hive, to the bee hive, and we are all suppose to believe that the queen bee will give us back our "fair share" from our labor. We already know the President's grades, Magna Cum Laude Harvard Law. Only the people who have had NO association with higher education in general, or Ivy League in particular have trouble understanding what that means.
Grades are a red herring. I find that it is typically used by bigots as a backhanded way of saying that a black man, the President, did not have the chops to be at Harvard Law, which accepts under 11% of the applications that it gets.
