117,409 American jobs were "outsourced" on our own soil under this law in 2010. And now they want "more"?

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that's an entitlement.

I retired two years ago, live off my Social Security, my Pension, and my IRA's and still have to pay Federal Income Tax, so I must be in the 53 percent that does not mooch off the federal government unlike children, and non working spouses, or elderly whose pension was stolen by some vulture capitalist. What irks me most about the Romney's entitlement speech is that if ever there was an entitlement class it is the people who he was speaking to, those that can maintain their lavish life styles by clipping coupons, who's income is such that they are no longer subject to the FICA, or medicare deductions and have dropped to the %13 tax bracket with well oiled tax avoidance schemes. That is Romney's claim to fame and I don't get how he can represent the whole of the United States if he views half as moochers.

The states relying on government handouts are overwhelmingly republican voting. 67% of federal aid goes to states that overwhelmingly vote red. When you look at the amount of taxes paid by states vs. federal aid received (lowest tax collection rate vs highest aid) 8 of the top 10 are all red states, and one of the exceptions is DC ( where I believe since they have no representation in congress or the senate shouldn't even be paying federal taxes). It isn't the 47% quoted who support Obama.

The revelations in this video come to me as a genuine shock. I have never hated Romney. I presumed his ideological makeover since he set out to run for president was largely phony, even if he was now committed to carry through with it, and to whatever extent he’d come to believe his own lines, he was oblivious or naïve about the damage he would inflict upon the poor, sick and vulnerable. It seems unavoidable now to conclude that Romney’s embrace of Paul Ryanism is born of actual contempt for the looters and moochers, a class war on behalf of his own class.

So many of you decry the fact that there is an estimated 47% of the population that doesn't pay federal income tax and seem to think that everyone that pays no income taxes fall into the same group.

I'm 58 years old and have been retired for 4 years and in that four years I've paid no income taxes because I've had no taxable income. I do however, have enough cash to live a pretty good life, I collect no government aid and have no guilt in being where I am today. Now, if you want to stay working for the rest of you life and proudly die paying income taxes feel free.

The majority of those that do not pay federal income taxes are the elderly who have retired or are living on their legal, earned Social Security benefits. And also keep in mind that there are 7000 working millionaires that pay no federal income taxes. I doubt they are living on government handouts.

Romney just said what he believes, that campaigning is a transaction. He buys votes with promises of tax cuts, and if getting a tax cut isn't the most important thing in the country to you, then you have no reason to vote for Romney. To that extent, I agree. I cannot imagine any reason for anyone who is not very wealthy and eyeing a big tax cut to vote for Romney.

He is wrong about the voters, though. There will be lots of the 47% who will vote for Romney for various reasons other than expectation of a tax cut, and there will be lots of middle class and wealthy people who vote for Obama for reasons other than expectation of a handout. It is cynical to paint the race in terms of handouts, but Romney reveals here that handouts for the wealthy are all he has to offer to buy support and votes.

Romney said he would "certainly appreciate" if the leaker — whose identity isn't publicly known — would release the entire tape to provide more context for his remarks.

Ironically, more than half of the American population has been asking Mitt to provide his TAX RETURNS for the last year in order to provide more context for his remarks, but he can't seem to help with that. On top of it, I didn't hear those words come out of his mouth when the dubbed over Prophet video caused deadly attacks on American embassies; only that is was Obama's fault.

Definition of MUTTERANCE: Making a doggedly defiant remark that completely contradicts his own position while back-peddling to the sound of his own voice.

Pretentiousness, arrogance, and dishonesty have no place on our planet if we want to survive.

Excuse me Mr. Romney ..... I am not voting for President Obama because I want goverment to take care of me. Even though I have had major medical problems all my adult life, I have gotten myself to work every day for over 32 years. I earn my keep, as well as my health insurance. I work harder than you ever thought of working in your Ivory Tower, making money from money NOT by your human labor.

I think Romney is short-sighted thinking the 47% of Americans who are on government subsistence of various sorts are ALL likely to vote for the President. Of course a lot will be voting for the President, but not all of them. There are many down and out people who believe strongly in an old fashioned American ideal, people who are poor as a churchmouse but nonetheless spend their days sharing the few pennies they have with friends and strangers alike. Many poor people served and defended America proudly and loudly proclaim the beauty of America even though they suffer from long term war injuries and in many cases are homeless.

Many homeless people will be voting for less entitlements and a balanced budget because they believe in it. Many amoung the 47% know a liar when they hear one and will not vote for a liar. I do not believe people think Mitt Romney is a liar, rather they think he is a basically good willed American man sometimes a little out of touch. Many street people on the other hand have transformed against Obama and this time around believe he is a liar.

A valid question is which people are likely voters. The November election may come and go with many street people missing it.

Romney did NOT alienate 47% of the population, because many of those 47% are the senior citizens who support Romney because he opposes the government's messin' with their Medicare and their Social Security.

And I'd bet that many of 47-per-centers are folks outta work, collecting unemployment, and don't like the government supporting all those welfare queens.

Not to mention the 7,000 millionaires who paid no taxes. I wonder if any of those free-loading millionaires were in that room applauding Romney's stance against goverment-centered society.

I joined the USMC at the age of 17, requiring my mother to sign a waiver for me to do so. I've served multiple tours in two different wars fighting for the United States of America. Since I was 18, I've spent every holiday season VOLUNTEERING to help my fellow Americans, unless I was busy.... fighting wars for my "fellow Americans". When the most catostrophic hurricane in our nation's history struck our land, I was there..... volunteering to help my fellow Americans.

I've been honored to take part in the big brother program, and have been blessed with half a dozen little brothers that, as of May 27 2012, I saw the last of graduate from High School and, as of August 2012, I saw to a 5th one beginning their first semester of college. What of the one that has yet to enter a university, you scornfully ask? Well, he's busy serving his second tour with the U.S. Airforce at the moment.

And all of the above is just part of what I've personally been up to during the last 10 years or so.

I've been continuously employed since I was 17 years old (currently 33yrs old), and I spent both my freshman and sophmore summers in high school employed as a file clerk at the University of North Texas Health and Science center at Fort Worth in Texas (Fort Worth is a city, not a military base).

In spite of seeing my 401k investments be stolen/plundered/robbed/ganked/ruined/(or whatever) two different times, I've always done what I could to save and invest money for my family's future. Never have I taken a handout from anyone, anywhere, but that is because I've never been so unfortunate as to need such a helping hand.

So let me get this straight....... did this candidate for the presidency of my nation just call me an "self-entitled irresponsible so-called victim"? Seriously?

Congress Split on Importation of “High-skill” Workers

In the opening months of the 110th Congress, several proposals that would boost importation of H-1B “high-skill” nonimmigrant alien workers have been introduced. It seems that, unfortunately, too many of our Members of Congress fail to see that allowing the mass introduction of foreign workers into the U.S. workforce not only ensures that countless native-born programmers, engineers, and professors stay unemployed or underemployed, it also drives down their wages if they are actually able to find a job. In the same vein, unprincipled employers are allowed to take advantage of H-1B employees by paying them less than comparable native-born workers and by making them work under less-than-ideal conditions.

These open borders Members Congress have put forth plans to not only deprive American workers of well-paying jobs and provide an unfair competitive advantage to corrupt businesses, but to discourage future generations of American students from undertaking careers in fields overrun with underpaid foreign workers.

Most notable (or, perhaps, infamous) among these plans is Sen. John Cornyn’s (R-Texas) “Securing Knowledge, Innovation, and Leadership (SKIL) Act of 2007” (S. 1083), which would, among other things, increase the annual H-1B cap by 77 percent – and that’s just in the first year following enactment! If, in any fiscal year, the cap is met, the cap for the next year would be increased by an additional 20 percent. Under no circumstances could the cap be lowered, however. The SKIL Act also would expand existing exemptions to the cap by: (1) making all H-1Bs working for nonprofits exempt (currently, only those employed by research institutions are exempt); (2) exempting up to 20,000 foreign-educated H-1Bs per year and removing the 20,000-per-year limit on exempt U.S.-educated H-1Bs; and (3) extending a new exemption to H-1Bs awarded medical specialty certification based on U.S.-based post- training and experience. These revised exemptions would apply not just to visa applications and employers’ H-1B petitions filed after the SKIL Act is enacted, but to those pending upon enactment. As a result, the annual cap would become even more meaningless. (Click here to view all of the negative impacts the SKIL Act [not only the Senate bill, but its House companion as well, would have.)

Sen. Cornyn, one of the senators who has worked most closely with the Bush administration to get a “comprehensive” immigration reform plan (i.e., mass amnesty) through the Senate, has not been content to just let the SKIL Act pass as a stand-alone measure. During the upper chamber’s floor debate regarding the “America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science (COMPETES] Act” (S. 761), a bill intended to enhance math, science, and technology education in this country, Sen. Cornyn attempted to insert the SKIL Act via the amendment process. Fortunately, this effort was rejected and the Texas Republican withdrew his amendment.

On the flip side, however, some Members of Congress understand that reform of this system must occur. For example, Senate Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) are championing the “H-1B and L-1 Visa Fraud and Abuse Prevention Act of 2007” (S. 1035), which, if enacted, would overhaul the H-1B and L-1 (for nonimmigrant workers who are “intracompany transferees” or who have “specialized knowledge”) visa programs so that priority would be given to U.S. workers and close gaping loopholes in the law that unscrupulous employers have oft exploited by requiring to them to be more transparent about their hiring practices. If the Cornyn amendment to the America COMPETES Act had been adopted, Sens. Durbin and Grassley would have been ready for they introduced amendments of their own that would have incorporated their H-1B/L-1 reform plan to, at least, partially counter the effects Cornyn’s deleterious proposal if it had been adopted.

In any case, we can be sure that Members of Congress who are open to the entreaties of the cheap labor lobby will continue to support legislation harmful to native- and foreign-born workers alike. It is imperative that you, our grassroots members, keep the pressure on these lawmakers by letting them know that supporting the wholesale giveaway of American jobs is an untenable position and will, ultimately, lead to their downfall at the polls.

As an Obama supporter, your comments amuse me. Should I assume that you don't really consider me to be an Obama supporter?

Take our background: my husband and I are in our late 20s/early 30s. We own our own home and have two fully paid-off (foreign!) cars. We have never depended on governmental aid, have no credit card debt, and have worked hard to have a sizeable nest egg. We volunteer with a local animal rescue group on weekends.

To add to it, we're both college-educated. I graduated from the Ivy League with my B.A. and M.A., and my husband has his B.A. Guess what, Mr. Romney? We entered these schools and received these degrees based on OUR hard work, not on our parents' financial status or family backgrounds. Our own parents went to state schools. The idea that someone could succeed in the Ivy League without wealthy parents and/or hefty donations must be quite foreign to you.

Superficially, I am assuming you believe our background would qualify us well to be your supporters. You are sadly mistaken. Your insults towards fellow non-wealthy Americans have assured that not only will we vote for Obama, but that we will also do all we can to convince fellow Americans to vote against your wealthy interests. You are an embarrassment to educated citizens who simply care about our society and realize the necessity of having safety nets in order to be a civilized society that really does reward hard work.

The whole argument that people do not pay taxes is idiotic. First place it is not the fault of anyone who fills out the IRS forms and realizes he or she has not made enough after their hard work to have to pay anymore taxes. Every time a raise in the minimum wage came up it was stalled or defeated by the GOP that would have maybe put those people into the category of having to pay taxes. Included in that 475 Romney and his stooge handlers came up with is the fact that just because you do not have to send Uncle Sam money does not mean you do not pay taxes. Taxes are deducted and most of the time you may get a refund of a partial amount of what you paid in but that fact "eluded" the because it does not make good copy. Now on the other side the independents and republicn leaners are the same as many of them do not pay any taxes at all because they make so much they can avoid them like Romney who gets an amazing break from 27% all the way down to 14%. Isnt that also sucking on the teat so to speak. I know they rushed out their trolls to try and throw water on this raging fire that Mitt was stupid enough to let happen but it is the end for him coming at a time when Obama is already pullling away from him in almost all states up for grabs. It's a wonder that we all don't need decoder rings to decipher all the gibberish that's designed to get around appearing to say what's really being said. Whenever I hear wealthy white men discuss subjects such as 'entitlement society', it goes back to my childhood in the deep south of the '60s. At that time, the subject was largely Blacks, although now it's been expanded to include all people of color, but they were then constantly derided for 'lacking the moral fiber to lift themselves out of poverty', by the same people who denied them educational and other opportunities so that they might have a fighting chance to do just that, but who were all the while glad that they had a docile work force that would do the drudgery for a pittance. How convenient that must be.

This, IMHO, is the real difference between what Romney and his camp wants and any alternative vision of an American future. The reason his tax rates were lower was because he didn't earn it through a salary. Most of his income is from investments which are taxed at a different rate. That's the law not his choice.

How interesting is it that when obama says something "off-the-cuff" the press is quick to run to his aid with "Oh, his remarks were taken out of context or oh, no, you misunderstood him! and that's the end of the story! While there are certainly Americans that warrant help the Democrats, since LBJ have worked very hard to build the ranks of the dependent simply to have more votes and hence, more power. Better still after any administration have the conditions in those neighborhoods changed significantly? I have a decent job for the area of the country I live. I make nearly 50,000. My wife doesn't work so she can raise our 2 kids instead of a daycare doing it. So, we haven't paid any federal income taxes since we had 2 kids. I am part of the 47%, so I have to assume that Romney doesn't care about me or my problems. I don't collect welfare, unemployment, food stamps, or any other goverment assistance and never have. I just don't make enough to qualify for federal income taxes at this time. I don't expect the govermment to take care of me nor do I want it to. The problem here is I have a tech job for a manufacturing firm and wages have severely been depressed. I haven't had a raise in 4 years and 4 years ago my pay was cut 13%. I would have been making about 58,000 at this point and probably would be paying some income tax. Who controls my wages? The 1%. It's their fault I don't make enough to pay an income tax. Pay me what I deserve, job-creators, and I will render unto Caesar that which is Caesars. Romney is an out of touch jackass.

Instead of whining, you should be happy you have a job because there's 23 million others who would beg to disagree with this comment and are right in line behind you should you leave it, along with millions more illegals Obama just gave amnesty to.

That would help pay for a lot of that interest we pay the rich on credit cards and mortgage loans.

Trickle down economics has enriched the rich while not producing its promised budget surpluses or sustained job growth despite 20 years of Republican Presidents trying to make it work. It is a scam.

Like any scam, the victims should get their money back. That would only be fair. Demand tax increases on the rich. America deserves to get its money back.

My school system works great, but we live in civilized Wisconsin -minus a Nazi governor who is trying to ruin the system by give Corporations an business $8000.000.000 in educational money for grants loans and give a ways. At one local school , that had to close their middle school because of all the cuts the kids are now learning in the Commons with room dividers and one class in a hallway. Romney only states plain and simple truth. OK, maybe THAT'S the story...that we actually have ONE honest presidential candidate and that they "captured him" being honest on secret video. This is ridiculous.

...So, what would you do about "those people," Mittens? If you claim you can never convince almost half the population of the United States to "take care of themselves," what is your plan?

Seems like you have to go one of two ways here. You can keep almost half of the nation "dependent on government" as you claim...or you can take away everything you belittle them for getting from government and let them starve.

IT CAN BE FIXED, ROMNEY! If the 1% world be willing to pay their fair share ... if the politicians would be willing to pay their fair share ... the United States would remove ALL forms of taxes; income, property, etc. and impliment a Flat Tax (Value-Added Tax or Sales Tax - call it what you will). This would be on ALL purchases ... including those purchases made by companies, schools, churches, the rich, the poor and those on the welfare. (Sorry, but the excuse that it would hurt the poor just doesn't hold water.)

By having a flat tax EVERYONE would pay their fair share ... those who have more tend to spend more ... those who have less tend to spend less. Our country would get tax revenues from those who are making plenty of money illegally and not paying a dime as well as from those who are making millions (or billions) legally but find ways to exempt that income behind corporate tax shelters. Anything being brought into the country would be required to have a bill of sale with it and whoever purchases that item would need to pay the same 'value-added' tax on it.

Let's see why this won't work ... oh, yeah ... the 1% who MAKE THE LAWS or PAY OFF THE POLITICIANS TO LOOK AFTER THEIR INTERESTS ... THEY would actually have to pay their FAIR SHARE!

Hmmm....did Romney really say anything that isn't the truth? He is right. Romney doesn't need to worry about alienating these voters since they weren't going to vote for him anyway. The story here is Romney's belief system. He has benefited immensely from trickle down economic policy which has cut his taxes numerous times while driving up the national debt which the rich largely fund with their excess investment capital. He sees this as fair.

He criticizes the victims of the failed trickle down economics for not paying taxes. Their incomes are stagnant since trickle down served to enrich the rich (top 1% held10% share in 1980 of nation's annual income, 24% share now). He says they don't take responsibility for their own lives.

When we went into recession in 2008, business preserved its profits and even enlarged them by putting workers on unemployment. I.e., they shifted the cost of their excess labor to government unemployment program adding to our deficit. I consider this to be shirking their responsibility. Yet, Romney blames some of those unemployed for not taking responsibility.

We were founded as a democracy where it was intended that the middle class would control its government. Thus one man, one vote. The rich today bear a striking resemblance to the King and his Lords of England circa 1776. Powerful, arrogant, and very rich.

It's time for the middle class to take its country back from the scam of the rich, trickle down economics.

The reality is that a lot of those 47% are poor white, very socially conservative voters who will be voting for Romney. That must be the part that Romney thinks feel like "victims". When you figure in state taxes, sales taxes, payroll taxes, gas taxes, probably all of the people in this group pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than Romney.

I have very good health insurance that I pay for, though they are a pain in the arse to fight with when I do have a problem that could be called elective but really is not.

I will not play politics with our nations defense, when Bush lied (And he did know the information he was presenting was not credible and he did not provide congress the contradictory information that was true and refuted his position) I did not support his war in Iran. Thank you for your generosity and your service; you are a true American no doubt. But you are greatly mistaken in your presumption that Romney was talking about you, he was not. It is people like you that Romney was giving praise to; you would realize that if you had seen the entire video rather than just the portion that liberal MSN reports on. What Romney was saying in that video is that it is not the government’s job to provide everything for everyone and that citizens need to take responsibility for themselves and their own lives and for the lives of those around them such as you have obviously done, such is the core of society that this country was built upon. Imagine this, multiply yourself and all you have done for others by a 100 million; that’s a 100 million people taking responsibility for themselves and for five other people whom they may not even know. If this can be achieved what we have is a country of responsible individuals, all unique from one another, living in harmony with each other and supported by each other, all independent from the government and supported by their own doings; this builds responsibility, charity, community; this builds America.

Is that not better than a society of 400 million people begging the government for more? Is that not better than the government forcing half the population to support the other half so that that all are poor but all are equal? That takes away all self-responsibility, charity, reliability; it destroys community and breaks down trust, it will destroy America and over half the population is blind to that fact because they are already 100% dependent on the government and will likely die if that support is taken away. This is what Obama wants, it is his ideal America where the masses are entirely dependent on government assistance; that assistance may keep you alive but it will never let you prosper. And once the entire population is sucked into this trap of government assistance America is doomed. Dependency makes you a slave, trapped with nowhere to turn. If we are all dependent on the government who will speak out against it? Who will say this isn’t right? $21.6 million in taxable income - tax rate of 13.6%. And NO payroll taxes (which take 7.65% out of every check made by working people).

They're using the phrase "income tax" to imply that 47% of Americans don't support our government financially. The truth is that working people in America have shouldered the BIGGEST burden of supporting our country through PAYROLL TAXES, while the rich and corporations got a reduction in their contribution (mostly INCOME TAXES) by reducing the income tax rates across the board.

Then they point to those at the bottom (whose INCOME TAXES have been reduced to 0%) and say, "They're leeching off me - they don't pay any INCOME TAX!" Yet those at the bottom are still paying a bigger percentage of their income in TAXES than the rich are.

See? It's lying by omission. Something the GOP is very, very good at.

Help me out with your logic here. Capitalism is based on having a wide array of workers. Different people fit into different roles. There must be a janitor, a technician, an electrician, and, yes, a manager, and a even a CEO. We all have different capabilities, both physically and mentally. We all start from different places and have different opportunities available and hurdles to overcome... CAPITALISM DEPENDS ON THIS MODEL. It depends on these differences.

American business owners have a responsibility to pay all their workers a living wage, from the CEO on down to the janitor. Unless they pay their employees adequately, they themselves are creating the situation in which we now find ourselves: too many working people, earning only minimum wage, living on food stamps and without benefits. CEO's making 250 times what the average worker makes, and paying a smaller percentage of their income in taxes. Every member of the Walton family a billionaire, while the average WalMart employee needs government assistance to eat.

All workers deserve to make a liveable wage. Or we could just let half the population starve, as Romney advocates.

First let's get this straight, the national debt is not the result of any tax cuts. If everything remained the same regarding taxation, and the only change we made was we had instead tied increases in federal spending to something rational, logical and reasonable (like population growth and inflation) from 1970 -- after the implementation of the Great Society programs -- until now, instead of having a $16 trillion debt, we would have a near $16 trillion excess and adding to that excess at a pace of nearly $1 trillion a year at this point. Instead of spending $3.6 trillion annually, the federal government would only be spending $1.6 trillion.

This means that, alternatively, once we had balanced our debt, we could have started cutting taxes from the bottom up and at this point over 97% of Americans would pay no income tax at all. Income tax would be reserved for only the top 3% and we would still be running (smaller) surpluses in that scenario also. This, if only we had tied the growth of government and spending to the reasonable and rational parameter of population growth and inflation.

The problem is NOT taxation. If we did this one simple thing now, our debt would be completely gone within 20 years and we would then be able to start alleviating the tax burden from the bottom up as noted.

BTW...amongst the financial chaos in Europe, one thing seems to be incredibly under-reported. That is that the strongest remaining economies, the economies that the failing nations are depending on to bail them out, have all used supply-side economics in the past 20 to pull themselves out of holes and strengthen their fiscal positions. Germany, Sweden, Norway...all cut both taxes and spending to get on the solid footing they're on. Other emerging European nations like Estonia are also doing so by combining tax cuts and fiscal austerity.

The "victims" of trickle down economics saw their household incomes rise by 15% -- in real dollars -- between Reagan's first tax cuts and 2009. And 2009 was lower than peak because it was the trough of the recession. BTW...the people who are not paying taxes aren't in that situation because they are doing so poorly. They don't pay taxes because every major supply-side tax cut (Reagan early-'80s, Clinton mid-'90s, Bush mid-'00s) has also cut tax rates and/or given exemptions benefiting the lower brackets to the point where 47% of American pay no income tax at all. Hundreds of millions of US citizens benefited from supply-side cuts. Supply-side has created an economy in which the average person in our bottom 5 percentile -- the poorest of our poor -- is in the TOP 30% of global wage earners.

You're exactly who Romney is talking about. You're crying "victim" even though your household has benefited from exactly what you're railing against.

Mitt DID NOT pay taxes on that money as wages (as you or I would do if we earned it and then invested it).

He got his "wages" from Bain as "carried interest". Bain put it into his bank account without any deductions for payroll taxes or income taxes. And then when Mitt filed his taxes, he claimed that money as "capital gains" and paid 15% on whatever his taxable income was figured at (after all his deductions for things like Ann's horse).

That would be the equivalent of you or me getting 100% of our gross paycheck deposited to our account, using it for living expenses, vacations, whatever we wanted and then paying a tax rate of 15% on whatever was left over.

It is a LIE (vigorously perpetuated by the investor class) that they "already paid taxes" on that money. They NEVER DID.

Tax cuts reduce revenue. Reduced revenue increases government's budget deficits. As Clinton said "this is arithmetic".

Bush's tax cuts in 2001 reduced government revenues, which did not reach 2000 levels until 2005. His budget deficits exploded from a surplus of $128 billion when he took office to $412 billion deficit in 2004. That's over $500 billion added to the annual deficit with his 2 tax cuts.

I cited share of national income being reduced for 99% by 15% while top 1% saw their share increase by 240%. That the total of national income increased overall only inflates the numbers I cite here.

Of the many of us who get partial to complete income tax returned to us, how many of us view ourselves as 'victims' and don't take responsibility for our lives? Most of us have jobs and are working hard to make ends meet. My husband works, and I am transforming my back yard into an urban homestead where we grow our own food and I am looking for ways to increase yields enough to sell at farmers market. I'm 61 years old, and I would still be working at my career except that jobs in my field have shrunk tremendously--thanks to the crash of 2007-8. Go back to 1999 with the repeal of the Glass-Steagall act, and you will get a better idea of the kinds of things that caused this mess.

When you filter thru the 47% of Americans not paying any INCOME tax, those that are elderly, too young to work, disabled, and those who don't have enough taxable income to pay income tax (yes, big corporations too), how many are left to blame on all our fiscal problems? Perhaps 10% of those 47%?

The Republicans have been blaming the welfare system for years now, trying to tie them to our deficits and spending. Those Republicans blame those who have the most need for all our problems, creating class warfare, discrimination, and totalitarian solutions for fixing what is really a non-issue. But you can see how well it works to pit the poor against the rest of America. After all, it's easy to blame those that can't defend themselves against the rich and powerful.

Clinton produced 4 balanced budgets. He raised taxes on the rich and gave it in the form of earned income tax credit to the working poor. The remainder was increased revenues which he used to balance the budget. Those 4 balanced budgets each had spending increases of $50 billion per year.

Usually, in an analysis, you have to account for the exceptions. The Clinton economic policy disproves the case you made. An economy works best when human activity is maximized. When a person at the lower end of the income scale is able to spend money on food and rent and clothing this helps their grocery store, landlord and department store to make more money and hire more people.

When you have a rich person sitting on vast sums of money waiting for the economy to improve as now, you are basically having money (idle capital) doing nothing. Clinton's miracle was to take some of this idle capital and put it in the hands of people who immediately spent much of it, thus injecting money into the economy (trickle up). The rich benefit (despite the tax increase) by having increased investment opportunities and eventually a higher return on their capital as well (interest rates go up as the economy moves towards full employment).

Trickle down has failed. Trickle up is proven to work and as a society we all benefit as even poor people start doing better, which reduces government spending on those Great Society programs you blame for our problems.

Trickle up helps the poor, the middle class, and even the rich.

Trickle down only helps the rich and makes the deficit grow.

Shaak32, I'll also stand by my original statement. The our debt was caused by out of control spending not insufficient taxation. I've clearly laid the facts out. Historical tax law could remain the same. Every tax cut and increase could be unchanged and we would still have a near $16 trillion excess if we had only tied spending increases in Washington to logical functions like population growth and inflation. That of course is a $16 trillion excess instead of the $16 pit we're now in. When you have a well thought response to that...then we can start talking.

It is only "arithmetic" if you consider second grade math as being the same as college algebra. Clinton's statement is only true if you have no understanding of the drivers of tax revenue (GDP) and are only looking at the immediate fiscal impact of the tax cuts. There is a reason it is called "trickle-down" instead of "flooding-down".

Since revenue is a function of GDP, one needs to base expected revenue growth on GDP growth. What supply-side does is grow the GDP faster than the norm so one has to compare expected revenue intake based on average GDP growth (3.5% per year since 1947) vs. actual revenue intake with the supply-side cuts. One would expect an initial drop in revenue, but then as GDP grows at a faster rate than average, tax revenue in the long term ends up higher than it would have had the economy grown at the average rate due to increased economic activity and a expansion of the tax base. This works particularly well in times of high unemployment (which apparently you were not one of the nearly 20% of Americans who were jobless at some point in the early '80s since you don't think you benefited). We see an example of this with Reagan's tax cuts which initially lowered revenue (in '81 and '82) but then produced more revenue than expected using the average 3.5% GDP growth rate and by the end of 1985 the cuts had already paid for themselves and were producing more than expected revenue going forward. Even Bush -- who I admit probably shouldn't have done his cuts considering unemployment wasn't particularly high -- had his revenue higher than expected with normal 3.5% GDP growth by 2006 and was on the way to having the cuts paid for when the housing market collapsed.

The whole point of supply-side is that it revs the GDP up which expands the tax base. Regardless of Clinton's rhetoric (I'll get to him later), none other than John F. Kennedy saw this clearly and was one of the biggest and most vocal proponents of supply-side economics. BTW...the 3 longest periods of stable economic growth in the US have happened following cuts to the top marginal rates.

Now to Clinton and his awesome economy. Clinton inherited an economy coming into a fresh recovery from recession. Normally the expectation is that one would see GDP increase in the 4.5-5.0% range coming out of recession. We didn't see this. Clinton's recovery was tepid and restrained. His GDP increases coming out of the recession were quite poor at 3.4% and 2.9% in the two years following his election and he only topped 4% growth in 1 of his first 4 years in office. That poor recovery was largely because of the increased tax burden. In fact would you care to guess when Clinton's economy really heated up??? It was in 1997 during a period you would expect to see flat to steady economic growth and it was spurred on by one of the most massive tax cuts for the rich in history (cutting the capital gains taxes by nearly 30% taking the rate from 28% to 20%). This tax law did nothing for the lower-middle class and working poor but it was a huge tax cut for the rich. The average person in the top 1% got 10 times the benefit as a person in the middle 20% and the average person in the bottom 20% actually saw their taxes go up and guess what happened...GDP growth shot up 4.5% then 4.4% the next year, then 4.8% the next and finally 4.0%! That growth led to historically low unemployment rates and the budget "surpluses (if you don't count borrowing from the SSI trust fund)".

Again, if you are part of the vast majority of the US, your situation got much better during this period from the early '80s on. Your concern that somebody else may have made more improvements than you did is just pure envy. Nice spin, but that's all it is. As I noted earlier, the budget wasn't balanced until he had one of the most massive tax cuts for the rich ever ('97 capital gains cut). One that actually raised taxes on the poor. Clinton economic policy does the exact opposite of what you claim. I proves my point! As I noted, Clinton's early economic policy was a drag on the expected economic recovery into the mid-'90s. GDP growth was slower than expected coming out of a recession largely because of his tax increases. Unemployment didn't get to pre-recession lows until nearly 4 years after he took office and he came in with the unemployment rate already in decline. Clinton's "miracle" only happened when he created the type of tax rates that you hate so much. The ones that allow super-rich guys to pay less than their secretaries. That's what he did when he lowered the capital gains rate by so much. BTW...and it turned out great, as you are so strongly stating.

I would recommend, however, that you need to study up more about the timing of things...when Clinton's economy was great...when his economy was below expectation...and what caused those reactions.

Not to belabor your points on this, I feel it necessary to show the Liberals that despite their ignorance about tax cuts generating revenues, they do actually exist.

As the accompanying link below, from the Tax Policy Center shows, despite Bush’s tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 revenues in 2008, $2.288 trillion, almost met Clintons best year with his higher taxes in 2000, $2.310 trillion. These are in constant 2005 dollars.

Revenues as a percentage of GDP were also up. In 2007 revenues were 18.5%, right at the historic average for the past 60 years of 18.4%.

Now, in the same chart you can see what happened with respect to outlays. In the last 4 years of Clintons presidency his outlays dropped as revenues rose thus creating his ability to balance the budget. Once again, there was never a surplus, but very close. On the other hand Bush’s last 4 years saw rising outlays (spending) resulting in deficits.

Remember, Clinton also enjoyed one of the most incredible growth periods in his last 4 years called the dot-com bubble. This had absolutely nothing to do with his governance or policies. As Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan called it, “irrational exuberance”, he was right. His fault was in the fact that he kept interest rates artificially low throughout accelerating the size of the bubble.

Spending is our problem in the Bush era AND today, NOT revenues!
