Reducing interest on student loans by 2 points is not going to reduce the amount of people in poverty or that pay no taxes. If that were the case I would agree with you and just make interest rates 1%. What you are trying to do is muddy the debate with irrelevant points. The greater debate is this, who are people going to vote for? Candidate A who vows to cut spending or candidate B who promises to increase benefits. The question is rhetorical... Every level of government from city councils to the President himself are promising checks that the taxpayer simply cannot afford to pay for.

Now I want to know how big a fool you are when you know you are running for President and you don't clean up your taxes starting with 2008. An even bigger fool would automatically assume a black man is an easy person to beat for the leader of the free world. And a total idiot doesn't realize that 47% are mostly older people on social security, young college students, and the working poor mostly white and mostly residing in red states because "right to work" states don't pay living wages and therefore their citizens don't pay federal taxes yet require the government teat to make ends meet. Do not blame most of the rich. They (Romney included) pay a lot of money in taxes, more than you probably realize. Before they get a dollar, it has already been taxed at 0 (General Electric comes to mind) to 35%. If it is a capital gain, they pay another 15% on top of that. When they die, if they do not put it in a trust, the government takes another 45%, but at least they were rich while they were alive. The basic problem is someone has to pay for this wonderful country we live and prospered in. The rich can live the life most of us can only dream of. Want to go to Paris for dinner, they can buy a first class ticket and fly there without worrying about the price. Want to see the pyramids in Egypt, no problem, first class. The workers pay for this through their labor (currently retreating to third world levels). We currently cannot pay for what we have built. The rich are the only ones that have the money to get us out of the mess we are in. Asking them to pay .036 more in income taxes is not going to fix the problem, but it is a start. For them to complain about it is a bit incredulous. We need to fix this and I do not see the Republicans (see Bush's tax cuts) as the answer.

So along with those on entitlements like seniors on Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid, all you people out there using tax credits in lieu of an $11/hr. minimum wage, you aren't taking responsibility for yourself. I agree with most of what you say. However, I believe the rich should pay more taxes because they have benefited most from our society. They have taken advantage of the infrastructure that has been built by the whole country and have the most to benefit from it continuing. If it crashes, they have the most to lose. However, we cannot just say they are all evil. There are rich people that realize this and are willing to pay more so they can make more. My beef is the people that say we need a flat tax or the rich are over taxed not realizing that you cannot compare the benefits someone making a million dollars has extracted from the US to someone making 20,000 a year. The ones making the most should pay the most, because they have the most to lose.

I also believe the reason Romney will not release his tax returns is because of the amnesty. However I have not proof, it is just a logical conclusion of his actions. I also do not believe he will be elected if he does not release them. Not sure how he will get through the debates taking that position.

My post above was meant to point out how convoluted the tax code is and not everything is black and white as some would like to make it. I am no expert in taxes but know it is too complicated to say let's have a flat tax rate that seems to placate a large portion of the population. Listen to Romney, he is going to lower taxes on the middle class, lower taxes on the wealthy but keep the revenue collected from the wealthy the same by lowering their deductions. It is as Clinton said, a math problem. Why lower their tax rate if you are going to keep revenue the same. What sense does it make. Just more double talk trying to get elected. His proposal would result in less taxes collected. If he talks in circles enough, get a little backing from Fox News, people will believe him.

As to Romney being caught telling the truth, we will find out this week just how many people did not already know his true feelings. Nothing he said surprised me.

This election cannot be an issue of rich vs. poor. It has to be right vs. wrong. It has to be about moving the United States foward.

Did you ever see Ted Koppel's excellent piece on John Kerry's heroism in Vietnam? Koppel went all the way over to Vietnam and visited the site of the battle Kerry was involved in. He interviewed villagers there, and they said he was the first American to visit their village since the day John Kerry and his swift boat were there. They confirmed John Kerry's story and they also said no other swift boat was in the area.

So, those other sailors on the swift boats that day that appeared in those infamous swift boat ads could not have seen the battle and therefore could not be witnesses to the event. They are liars who did the Navy a disservice and dishonored a true American hero. They are traitors to our country to lie about military heroism by an American.

The story. Kerry's swift boat came under fire. The boat headed straight for the machine gun position as the crew fired back. As the boat ran aground, Kerry leaped off the front and headed straight for the machine gun position from which the North Vietnamese machinegunner was retreating, Kerry in hot pursuit. Shots were fired and Kerry emerged from the trees unscathed. The villagers later buried the five N. Vietnamese regulars killed that day.

As will I, newday...Holey Moley, just as I was thinking that Mitt just HAD to be getting smarter about his campaign he comes up with this. The Tea Party should be enraged, since it appears that lots of them live on "entitlements". I'm starting to actually feel sorry for Mr Romney...he's in way over his head; and we haven't had the first debate yet. It's going to be hard to "spin" his way out of this one.

Hey Bob, Where did you get the makers vs the takers? Rush Limbaugh has been spewing this hate for several weeks. The only thing you forgot to call the 47% of American's is "Parasite", that's what Rush has been saying! Now we have a man running for POTUS and he's talking trash as well and caught on tape saying it earlier this year. Willard and Rush must have gotten together to decide what to call anyone voting for Obama.

It might be why the First Read hasn't been criticizing Obama is because theres nothing they can say about a man that's a genuine article.

The sad part is that most Republicans refuse to acknowledge that in that "47%" there are Republicans getting assistance right now. Gov. Romney in his talk does nothing to change that.

The conservative assumption being presented is that ALL people receiving assistance are Democratic "takers" with no intent to better themselves. There is absolutely NO consideration for the working poor and no acknowledgement of the facts associated with Republican States and/or non-minorities getting welfare or other assistance.

Instead of bigger taxes for the rich how about digging into this 47% of non participants?

Everyone should pay something even those at minimum wage. I had to pay when I was young and living on minimum.

Yep ofg, gosh darn that "Earned Income Tax Credit" created by President Nixon and expanded by President Reagan who also hailed it as a successful program to help poor people move up in the world. I mean that's the thing that let's a lot of them escape paying income taxes for gosh's sake! (DURN those two liberal Presidents!)

And you know those "payroll taxes" that ALL workers earn and pay via direct deductions from their paychecks to fund SS and Medicaid, regardless of income level? Heck with it, tax them MORE!!

And all those sales taxes they pay that when looked at in proportion to their actual disposable income costs them more dramatically than middle class or rich folks. Heck with it, they don't need to eat or pay for gas! Tax them MORE!

Your process to get rid of Earned Income Tax Credits would actually increase the number of people in poverty and increase the amount of people needing assistance. Or else you could be saying "screw them, who cares about them."

No, I heard the statement in context. He was pointing out that Republicans pander for votes over guns and religion. Kind of like abortion this year. I haven't seen Obama try to take any ones guns or religion in 4 years.

The video on your link is the same 1 minute 7 second video on this First Read article. I'm guessing he spoke for longer than 1:07. Do you think Mother Jones might have left out any additional comments and edited the clip? You can never be sure.

Listening to the video again, it's clear he was talking about what I said above. Nearly half the country will vote for their party regardless. People who don't pay taxes probably aren't too concerned about tax policy. He's saying he needs to convince the middle. I think we all agree on that concept.

It sounded as if he was lumping the President's entire base in the category of "government dependents" and that's wrong, ----as is lumping any demographic or political affiliation into a given stereotype is wrong.

Just as we analyzed the President's "you didn't build that" comment to death, we can probably pick this unbecoming comment to pieces - each side picking the piece they like the best.

Yes, I went back and read the transcripts. Thanks. Kudos to Mother Jones for including his additional comments. My thoughts on those are on post #34.

Candace, the only reason President Obama's "you didn't build that" ("that" referring to infrastructure) was beaten to death is because conservatives were trying to put words in his mouth that he didn't really say. He's clearly talking about roads, bridges, etc. Even Romney has said very similar things. It's just common sense--we all stand on the shoulders of those before us and who have taught us and paved the way for us. Duh.

Romney's tone and comment are quite different. There is no painting it any other way, no matter how hard you try. And why should you? It's how he really feels. This completely fits in with other comments he has made about the poor, about how he likes to fire people, how we should let companies go bankrupt. I also dislike what he says about the independents--that they vote out of their emotions. Well, I wonder what emotion (disgust??) they have when they hear his disdainful words.

Bethie, when President Obama's "build that" comments were put into context, they actually sounded even worse.

The other comments you mentioned - the poor, firing people, bankruptcy, were clearly taken out of context (much like what was done to the President). Go back and read what the Gov. actually said about those topics. You might find they either support your preconceived notions or you might find they make much more sense. Either way, it helps to develop a more informed opinion.

The defense argument is weak. Romney f-d up and he is gonna pay with independent voters. I think this is Romney's ....(ahem).....Waterloo.

Candace, I don't know how you can say that Obama's comments sounded even worse in context. (???) He made a simple grammatical error--he should have said "those" instead of "that". Why would he tell business owners that they didn't build their own business? That doesn't make sense. As I said, Romney has made very similar points about the fact that we all benefit from our parents, teachers, and the community's support as we make our way in the world.

I have read Romney's entire editiorial about letting Detroit go bankrupt. It's clear where he's coming from. It's an important point of disagreement between the two candidates. I love your sanctimonious line "it helps to develop a more informed opinion", when yours is so biased. Please explain why we should trust someone like Mitt, who hides his records: his taxes (ONE year??? he even required more from his own VP candidates), his computer files from his governorship, the records from the Olympics he headed, and his lies about Bain (did he retire in 1999 or 2002??).

Your problem is that your party has chosen an extremely weak candidate to go up against President Obama. No amount of sugar-coating and white-washing on your part can change that. How can you dismiss Romney's premature pouncing on the recent events in Libya? His press release following his comments, which were unfounded, was truly incompetent. All he could do was stutter, grimace, and repeat, ad-nauseum, his lie that the current administration was apologizing. Saying it 20 times doesn't make it true.

Here are entitlements: City pays to build stadium for the owner of a football team who sits back and takes a portion of the intake from food and drinks, and VIP seating as well as charges a fee to the city AND each game goer for the PRIVILEGE of seeing his dream team (LA, CA). State builds automobile factory, paves roads to the factory and pays the workers for 10 years full salary while the ownere of the company banks profits. (oh, and that was WITH the money that FEMA gave to the state (of MS, Toyota Plant) to cover damage from Hurricane Katrina, whose citizens did NOT see a dime. How about every time a company goes bankrupt (BAIN comes to mind) the STATE has to come up with a way to pay out the wages of those who LEGITIMATELY worked the hours that SHOULD have been paid, while the BANKRUPTOR has borrowed to the hilt against the equity and pocketed those monies? (OR, Select Onion) Those are a SMIDGEON of examples of CORPORATE WELFARE!

Wanna know how Bain bankrupted ITS companies? Borrowed against ALL the equity, BILLED outrageous and UNPAYABLE managing fees, KEPT all monies it WAS able to wring out of the companies and then BANKRUPTED them, costing THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of those "lazy, handout-expecting, entitlement people" their wages for WEEKS if not MONTHS, costing them their PENSIONS, costing them their VACATION pay, or paid time OFF pay. That being said, the 47% who don't pay taxes to whom Mittens was referring was a meme started by a conservative blogger by the name of Eric Erickson. Erickson, like typical conservative mouth pieces, only states the partial fact omitting that was true only 2009 when so many were on unemployment because of the economic collapse and the fact the President got passed a tax cut for the working poor called, "Making Work Pay," that removed approximately 47% from the tax rolls that year. The actual rate who don't pay ANY income taxes on a consistent basis is approximately 22% and it's typically the elderly on social security (who have worked and paid both income and social security taxes) or disabled young adults on disability.

the 47% INCLUDES those who don't pay taxes on municipal bonds, who don't pay taxes on STASHED FUNDS overseas, who don't pay taxes on BANKRUPTED businesses, (who bankrupt MORE than profit in order to escape paying any at all) you PUBtards couldn't see the truth if it crapped all over your FACE.
