Ryan's debate practice partner will be former Solicitor General Ted Olson

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The former U.S. solicitor general under President George W. Bush will serve as the debate partner for Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, the Romney campaign announced with just three weeks to go before the only vice presidential debate before the November election.

Ted Olson

Ted Olson has argued 58 cases before the Supreme Court, including a case that put him at odds with many Republicans: overturning the state of California's ban on gay marriage, known as Proposition 8.

Olson was originally highly praised at the start of the decade by the Republican Party as he successfully argued Bush v. Gore --the ruling that determined the outcome of the 2000 election -- before he was selected as Bush’s solicitor general.

“Mr. Olson is one of the most skilled, intelligent, and successful litigators in America -- just the kind of opponent needed to prepare the Congressman for Mr. Biden,” Ryan spokesman Brendan Buck said.

Olson will join Rep. Ryan for preparations leading up to the Oct. 11 match up with Vice President Joe Biden in Danville, Ky. The campaign says Olson and Ryan had one practice session this past week.

“Joe Biden has been in elected office for more than 40 years. There are few people in politics with more experience debating the issues than Joe Biden, so we are taking this process seriously,” Buck said.

Ryan held his only full day of debate prep in Oregon last Sunday but Olson did not join.

Saturday morning’s announcement of Olson is the final debate partner to be released.

President Barack Obama has John Kerry (D-Mass.) standing in as Mitt Romney, while Romney has picked Ohio Sen. Rob Portman to play Obama.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) will aid Biden with his debate prep and play Ryan. Van Hollen and Ryan serve on the House Budget Committee together.

Former Attorney General John Ashcroft told the Romney campaign of the selection that "Ted Olson possesses the extraordinary intellect, judgment, and character to be a strategic asset in any endeavor. Few lawyers have prevailed in as many of the country's most challenging battles to protect our national interest as Ted has. I, along with many other conservatives, welcome his increased participation in the Romney campaign."

How about a thread on the judge in WI throwing out Weasel Walkers union busting law?

MADISON, Wis. — A Wisconsin judge on Friday struck down nearly all of the state law championed by Gov. Scott Walker that effectively ended collective bargaining rights for most public workers.

When Walker cut most of the state & public unions' power, I thought then that it would be thrown out of court because he did not cut those same powers to all state and public unions. I also believe that if his actions were to really cut the states' cost of running government that he also would have at least froze the salaries & benefits for those not covered by unions - including his own.

Now, on to the real topic for this article - I just find it interesting that the real people involved in this debate need to have someone else partner up with them. If they are not qualified to manage their own debate, how are they qualified for one of the top political positions in this country?

Dem or Rep, this is a joke! I find this shameful and just wish we had another real candidate in this so-called election!

Romney & Ryan: Business Success + Fiscal Responsibility = The winning combination Americans really need

Business success at the expense of others isn't really something to brag about. His greatest success he brags about is Staples. Starting wages at Staples is $8.15 an hour with few benefits similar to Walmart. Romney claims he can create good jobs however good jobs to Romney is $8 an hour. Other "successes" were buying Burger King and firing half the employees to pay themselves huge fees.

Financial engineering has been part of the Burger King story for so long that it’s hard to believe there is still anything worth plucking from its carcass. “It’s been run as a cash cow for Wall Street,” said Bob Goldin, an executive vice president of Technomic, a food service consulting

In 2002, Goldman Sachs, along with two private equity firms, TGP and ... hmmm ... Bain Capital, teamed up to buy Burger King. This is exactly the kind of situation private equity firms like to trumpet: taking over a downtrodden company and nursing it back to health. And to get them their due, Burger King’s new owners did some good, stabilizing both the company and the franchisees, many of whom were in worse shape than Burger King itself.

But the private equity investors also cut themselves an incredibly sweet deal. Their $1.5 billion purchase price included only $210 million of their own money; the rest was borrowed. They immediately began taking out tens of millions of dollars in fees. Four years later, they took Burger King public. But, first, they rewarded themselves with a $448 million dividend. In all, according to The Wall Street Journal, “the firms received $511 million in dividend, fees, expense reimbursements and interest” — while still retaining a 76 percent stake.

Does it need to be said that Burger King was soon back to its old struggling self? Or that the solution, once again, was to sell to another private equity firm? Of course not!

Now, how about credibility? Mitt's has none and is a proven liar His tax returns will show where his money is invested and as everyone knows, it's not in this country. That may be fine for you, but most people have a problem with that. Your only goal is to discredit Obama so he doesn't get re-elected. GM hired 100,000 need a link for that. I believe they called back that many not hired a lot of difference there. Oh that is unless you count the jobs in china. the gm bail is great they do need to pay it back though, as have others. Obama is buying up lots of volts so we can expect a larger electric bill to pay more money out the door. But is better they the wasteful SUV's they have purchased in the last 3 1/2 years.

I am disappointed in all of you...some of you are capable...I've read it...you can do it...you can rip the other guy to shreds and still be funny about it...I know you can, let's go do this thing. Ok so let me get this straight... Romney/Ryan campaign decided to pick Ted Olson to do debate prep for Eddie Munster? This is curious considering that Ted Olson is pro-gay marriage and has had a high-profile role in supporting gay right.

In a way, Olson might be a good choice. Olson takes the role of a reasonable moderate, similar to what he will face with Obama.

I don't give Imam Ryan much chance against Biden.

Now to make the debate practice even more real for Ryan they need to dress Olson up in a curly orange wig, big red bulbous nose, big red shoes and a red striped jump suit........then it would look just like Biden (although at that point it could be mistaken for obambaloney, too)

It won't help. How do you successfully debate with lies?

Easy most of the public doesn't watch facial expressions or body gestures, as someone who's been studying it for a while now (think the TV show "Lie to Me") they're all lying I can detect nuances and yes this goes for President Obama and Mrs. Obama too.

Let's look at the picture of Olson they have for the article, his brows are furrowed, his mouth is open it's disgust (think about what your face does when you smell something stinky) now this is probably just a random picture that has nothing to do with anything, because that's how this network news site works.

If it's fair to employ an intellectual to represent your opponent, then why wouldn't the opposite be true?

Yes, I see your point. However, I don't think actually gaining an equal footing is the goal here. The goal is survival without a Palin-like gaffe being the news out of the debates. So, you would think Romney would want a shifty tebag-type to prepare Ryan on how to twist words, lie, and divert without saying anything he actually believes. If Ryan actually debates Biden their ticket is doomed... they simply can't admit what their policies and political platform actually is. Considering the type of campaign they are running it makes no sense at all to come to the debates to debate. The only hope Republicans have is for Ryan to show up, lie, divert, and twist words and sling as much mud at Obama as possible and hope like hell something sticks. Biden will eviscerate Ryan if he starts talking about his actual beliefs...

helped steal an election for Bush

          And super man is real!

You want to talk about a stolen election. In Minnesota, The republican apparently won by 200 votes. They found 500 Democrat votes in number of precincts by getting the under vote counted making more votes counted in those precincts than people who signed in to vote. This made Al Franked the got the new counts to stand up with a tie in the Minnesota Supreme Court, because the Chief Justice, a Republican recused himself because he was the overseer of the election. This gave Al Franken

But Minnesota should never have gotten as far as it did. In 2008, the Democrat flunky voter registration organizers in Minnesota had over 1100 convicted fellons (who legally cannot vote) registered and voting in Minnesota. Fellons overwhelmingly vote Democrat. By 2011, Minnesota had finally tracked down all these fraudelent voters and asked them if they knew it was illegal for them to vote. As long as they say they didn't know, they are not charged with voter fraud. 450 admitted they knew, 325 of these fellons have been convicted, and the rest will be eventually convicted. That's 1100 votes that were null and void that were counted, and cannot be rescinded.

Democrats with Al Franken have perfected the legal methodology to throw an election, not the Republicans.

Where is your proof that a majority of judges are conservative? I want to see that. I believe just the opposite is true. I believe that a majority of judges are liberal. The ones that give out the large settlements for erroneous things like the lady who burned her crotch with hot coffee. The judges that do not want people to be responsible for their actions are liberal. You read about a lot more judges like that than you do conservative ones. "DELAND, Fla., Nov. 11 - Something very strange happened on election night to Deborah Tannenbaum, a Democratic Party official in Volusia County. At 10 p.m., she called the county elections department and learned that Al Gore was leading George W. Bush 83,000 votes to 62,000. But when she checked the county's Web site for an update half an hour later, she found a startling development: Gore's count had dropped by 16,000 votes, while an obscure Socialist candidate had picked up 10,000--all because of a single precinct with only 600 voters."

              - Washington Post Sunday , November 12, 2000 ; Page A22

Yes. Something very strange happened in Volusia County on election night November 2000, the night that first Gore won Florida, then Bush, and then as everybody can so well remember there was a tie.

Something strange indeed. But what exactly? In the above report ( click for full version), written days after the election, hotshot Washington Post reporter Dana Milbank goes on to attribute the strange 16,022 negative vote tally from Volusia's precinct 216 to an apparently innocent cause.

"…. faulty 'memory cards' in the machines caused the 16,000-vote disappearance on election night. The glitch was soon fixed," he wrote.

But thanks to recent investigations into Black Box Voting by Washington State writer Bev Harris we now know this explanation is not correct. In fact it is not even in the ballpark.

According to recently discovered internal Diebold Election Systems memos, Global Election Systems' (which was later purchased by Diebold) own technical staff were also stumped by the events in Volusia County/

In Chapter 11 of her new book "Black Box Voting In the 21st Century" released early today in .PDF format at Blackboxvoting.com and here at Scoop Ms Harris observes.

"If you strip away the partisan rancor over the 2000 election, you are left with the undeniable fact that a presidential candidate conceded the election to his opponent based on [results from] a second card that mysteriously appears, subtracts 16,022 votes, then just as mysteriously disappears."

Romney Flip Flopper Campaign is in disarray. See Politico write-up - Let the blame game begin.

Question to the people who is voting for Romney/Ryan. Why would you vote to have Romney to get a 13% tax cut where Romney would pay 0.824% on all income? And those same people would be paying on average 20%. That is stupid in it self. Happy trails with that crap.

Question: If Romney's campaign management is dysfunctional how can we trust him to manage the country? If you are running an office as an office manager and that office is dysfunctional you would be fired for incompetence.

Question: If Romney Flipper can't hold a clear thought now what make you think he can hold one during the debates, without saying he can see Russia from his house?

Interesting right wing nuts try to claim the economy should be the only issue yet never talk about how Romney's plans will fix it, do they even know what his plans are. Personally the honesty and integrity of he who would be POTUS is very much an issue. If he can actually explain how his 5 trillion dollar tax cut will be made revenue neutral, not reduce taxes on the wealthiest and not raise them on the poorest I'll consider him. Until then no way. As for who the lairs are even Fox news admits it's Ryan.

Larry it is simple, if you give big business incentive to come back and do business in America, they will. They certainly will not with the threat of 35% taxes, when they can stay where they are for a much lower rate. The situation will never get better until we bring, the jobs back home. When you have more people working and not living off the government guess what you cut the deficit. That is why, the Dems scream about how good it was under Clinton (drum-roll) because he got to ride the Reagan economy train until he signed NAFTA, and need I say more. (probably will) But the policies of the chosen one, do not and will not bring us back to glory, until we give business a reason to come home.

Ronnie Raygun was the initiator and a huge proponent of NAFTA. Bush Sr. finished the negotiations and signed the treaty. A republican congress approved the treaty and Clinton signed the bill.

But it was all Clinton's fault, you're right, of course.

Maverick: Sorry you're so deluded to believe if we merely lower taxes on the rich they'll quit exporting jobs when clearly that's been proven untrue. There's no math you can use where people like Romney will pay $10 an hour here if he can hire workers elsewhere for $1 an hour. When someone sells here they are responsible for taxes on what they sell here whatever the rate. When they can make their billions selling to Zimbabwe you might have a point. The tax rate here 30 years ago was 70% and companies prospered, trying to pretend they are outraged at paying 35% on the small amount they can't shelter with their various loopholes is nonsense. Reagan's "gravy train" was accomplished by tripling the deficit to pay for the most massive peacetime military build up in history it isn't surprising you could improve the economy by spending like Reagan did. Clinton didn't benefit from Reagan's spending he kept the economy strong by spending within our means. As for NAFTA that was a republican drafted plan though Clinton signed it he was wrong to do so. Before Bush people that fell into the middle class was 61% of the population now it's 51% with 30% more falling into the poor range. If trickle down worked why are there more poor today with tax rates on the rich half of what they were 30 years ago?

How can a 5 Trillion Dollar Tax Cut CREATE REVENUE?

Every economist said it's impossible. Nor can any economist explain it.

Taking revenue out of the budget creates revenue for it.

I Challenge any Right Wing Nut Job to explain it in plain English Please.

Funny Biden did very well debating Palin. Did you miss that? Keep underestimating Joe, Ryan doesn't. Right wingers will keep telling each other how well they're doing right up till the election.

While last week's vice-presidential debate had a larger audience than any other in history, voters' impressions of Sarah Palin have changed little. A special re-interview this weekend of voters who had first been polled a week ago found that most (55%) continue to have a favorable view of Palin, but most (52%) also still believe that she is not qualified to serve as president, if it becomes necessary.

In contrast, voters' opinions of Joe Biden have improved since the previous Pew survey conducted Sept. 27-29. Biden's favorability rating among registered voters recontacted over the weekend climbed from 54% to 63%, and the percentage believing he is qualified to serve as president jumped to 77% from 69% a week earlier

Both candidates get high marks for their debate performances, though Biden receives substantially better marks overall. Roughly eight-in-ten voters (81%) who watched the vice-presidential debate rate Biden's performance as excellent or good, compared with 65% offering positive ratings for Palin. Biden receives higher marks for his debate performance than Barack Obama did in the first presidential debate (72% excellent/good). Palin, too, is viewed as doing a better job than did John McCain (65% vs. 59% excellent/good).

Convenient choice of adjectives RedDev, and if I remember it correctly it was President Obama who looked wounded from that exchange. While you don't agree with Ryan's budget proposal, at least he had the intelligence and intestinal fortitude to put one together that actually passed the house with bipartisan support vs. President Obama's D.O.A. budget proposals and Harry Reid's three plus year, open checkbook, continuing budget resolutions. Whether you laugh or cry makes no difference to me. Your yellow dog democrat choice will be voted out in November.

That was worth a laugh. Ryan's partisan budget didn't have the guts to own up to the governments obligations. That is why it didn't have bipartisan support for passage, and that is why a bottle of MyLax won't push that piece of waste through Congress. Swallow those convenient choice of adjectives, nouns and verbs.

Approved by Dem.. controlled Senate, and the only thing getting to floor of the Senate is what Reid decides to put through. Then it goes back to the House for ratification. The house has been controlled by Republicans for the last year and a half only. They are attempting to change the spending, but there has to be support in the Senate as well.

All you are worried about, is your Welfare and not being contributors, but FREELOADERS to society. If it wasn't for the rich, which includes many Democrats as Republicans, you wouldn't be able to have Welfare and other entitlements which MOST of you do not DESERVE! ANYONE that votes for color over QUALIFICATIONS again, is truly an ignorant moron. All color has done to America is left a giant BLACK and BLUE mark on the world. Obama is proof of a total FAILURE as a president and human being. If reelected, Obama will have the Muslim TERRORIST Brotherhood sitting right here in our country, to start there war on American citizens. LOCK and LOAD!!!!!!!!!!!! We have NO MORE SECURITY as Obama has shown. Too busy in continued campaigning.

How can Ryan gain 40 Years of experience in 50 Days?

                                      Not happening in 50 Years.

It doesn't matter who coaches Ryan, he will still be like a deer in headlight trying to avoid saying anything specific about what their policies and plans are.....remember "we can't say what we will do because then we won't get elected"?

Joe Biden may make gaffes but he doesn't avoid the difficult questions and speaks honestly.....Ryan wouldn't know honesty if it bit him in the butt!

I have noticed that the republicans use the same tactics as the dictators in the middle east used to "mold the thinking" of it's people. To repeat the same lies over and over until it becomes gospel. This is why the riots all over the world are happening. These people believe that the U.S. government is behind the vicious you tube video that caused all the uprisings. I hope the American electorate is smarter than that. I hope we will see the truth behind the screen of lies about the President, Unions, Women's rights, the economy and every other issue they choose to filter through their limited and distorted vision of life in this country. It is a FACT that income disparity has widened, it is a FACT that the pro-life people are unrelenting, it is also apparent to me the right thinks they can win by mesmerize the voters, at least the ones they will ALLOW to vote, into believing all the tripe and drivel they keep repeating. Every reporter in the countries where these riots are happening keep repeating the same thing. It is decades of lies about the west that is at the heart of the unrest, and it is only through education of the people there about how our FREEDOM OF SPEECH prohibits blocking the opinion of even the most radical, uninformed, narrow minded, and prejudiced American. There in lies the rub. Will the American people educate themselves, will the press fact check all the statements made by both sides? We will decide our future in this election, will it be "All for one and one for all", or will it be the money that wins? I for one hope we are smarter than we are given credit for. I sincerely hope we will vote for a future that is fair and one that will give every citizen a chance to advance. "It is not what you know that hurts you, it's what you DON'T know". These debates will tell us what that future might be depending on how well we LISTEN and LEARN. Peace to all, have a restful weekend.

Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels was the master of the “big lie” tactic in which a lie, no matter how outrageous, is repeated often enough that it will eventually be accepted as truth. Goebbels explained:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

Taj, this must be what you are referring to. If so, you are right.

If you think that Joe “this is a big Fu&^ing deal” Biden is anything more than a late night punch line you have to be nuts. Biden is a lose cannon as far as I am concerned. The only courage I have seen from B. Hussein Obama is his willing ness to let Joe open his mouth. At any rate this should be entertaining.

So just as we expected ~ the whole damned affair is theatre. Why would you need to rehearse your core beliefs? Shouldn't they be just as natural to express and, say, breathing? The rehearsal is to provide ready answers to anticipated questions ~ but in that scenario, wouldn't the depth of knowledge on that subject be limited only to the answer? For those who expect Biden to crater, think again. He's been facing better than Ryan for almost forty years ~ ~~ and surviving. He will come out on top again because he doesn't have to "rehearse" to know his core values.

Paul Ryan already goes into this debate with a disadvantage. He has never really had to fight for anything before. It's always been handed to him. And, before you say, oh, his father died when he was young. So what? So did many people's father. The difference is, he was left wealthy and remains wealthy on his families money. He has lied so many times already, it's fuel for whatever fire is thrown at him. He can't back track on his lies. They are out there for anyone of intelligence to see. And, in the debate, Fox Opinion Network won't be able to ask him the questions!! Since they have never asked Ryan or Romney a hard question, they won't know what to do with themselves when someone actually does.

Ryan is the congressman for a heavily unionized district of Wisconsin which is heavily democrat centric in every other elected, political, office. So his father was associated with the family business. He didn't run it. There are many direct descendants who are currently making their living with that business. When the congressman's father died, his family found their own way through it. He is a success by his own effort. He could have just as easily been a failure. Congressman Ryan will easily clean Biden's clock whoever the moderator will be.

Ryan was NOT left wealthy. His limited (by congressional standards) wealth when he was first elected in '99 was from 2 investment partnerships and his family's construction business. It wasn't until he married into a wealthy family that his net worth increased into just over $1million. Obama, by the way, had a net worth of over $7million when he was a candidate in '08. Ignorant hypocrits!

Ryan is not. We have seen how he voted on the issues the middle class cares about. Enough seen. Nothing can save him.

Just the fact that Ryan can not handle it himself says a lot about him.

The voters love Biden. He is one of us.

I hope he gives credit in the debates to Ted Olson since Ryan is planning on plagerizing Ted Olson.

Just listened to Romney in front of Hispanics. My thought before he started was he will put his foot in his mouth and he did.

Another Freudian slip. He said he was going to impair, oops, empower Hispanics....

Yes we are well aware of the Republican plan to impair, oops empower Hispanics, Mitt.

The Republicans have ALWAYS been bent on impairing Hispanics.

I have always been told the first answer is the right one.

I can't believe anything you say, Mitt Romney.

You just do not come across as truthful.

Skippy better spend some time reviewing his 9th grade world geography - he's spend sooooooo much time inside Washington, he can't find anything outside of Grant Circle. If he and Joe Biden are debating foreign policy.... I can't wait for Skippy to try to cover his ignorance with more lies.

Lib in OK: They have not taught world geography since I was in grade school. I have a couple years on Lyin' Ryan. He would not know where the Khyber Pass is.

There is one way to know if Ryan is lying. If his lips are moving, he's lying. If he looks thoughtful, he's thinking of his next lie. So far, no one can really say anything he's told the truth about! Mitt Romney only chose him because he was told to by his big money supporters. The proof of that you say? The fact that he picked him at all!! Only his most extreme right wing supporters wanted Ryan, and since that's where the money is, that's where Swiss Mitt goes!! Some pair. Robme and Lyan!! For all of the gullible fools everywhere!!

I agree the guy is a joke. Can you imagine having him as the number two man to take charge of this country ? Scary !

Actually, I find it ironic how the liberal mainstream media was questioning whether Ryan was ready to be only a heartbeat away from being the President. Funny thing is, they never questioned whether the junior senator from Illinois was ready to actually be president. Typical liberal hypocrites in every sense of the word!

@ kfilly: I think we DID consider whether we wanted Obama to be President. It was called the 2008 Presidential elections. Sorry if you missed it; maybe you were too young. But people overwhelming DID consider and elected Obama. Get over it.

And....you're not mentioning the 2008 alternative. No one wanted McCain in...he likely may not have made it though even one term. And people (dems and repubs) laughed at the thought of Palin being that 'one heart beat away'.

That would make the "good muslims" UNCOMFORTABLE!
