Democrats lead in two important Senate races, tied in a third

While the presidential campaign remains the main event of the 2012 election season, a fierce, state-by-state battle is also underway to determine which party will control the U.S. Senate for the next two years.  And a series of NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls shows Democrats with an edge in two of the most closely-watched races and tied in a third.

In Ohio and Florida, the Democratic candidate holds a solid lead, while in Virginia – where former governor and onetime DNC chairman Tim Kaine faces former Republican Sen. George Allen in a marquee battle – the candidates are in a dead heat.

Republicans had entered the 2012 cycle with high hopes of winning all three races. All are seats currently held by Democrats, and winning any of them would advance the GOP toward the net gain of four seats they need to take back control of the Senate come January.

In Virginia, Kaine and Allen are deadlocked at 46 percent apiece with likely voters.

In Ohio, incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown leads Republican State Treasurer Josh Mandel 49 percent to 42 percent.

And in Florida, two-term Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, leads GOP Rep. Connie Mack 51 percent to 37 percent. Twelve percent of Florida voters said they were undecided about the race.

With only 54 days until the election, these three polls suggest that Republicans still have work to do if they wish to achieve their goal of retaking control of the Senate. Democrats must defend 23 of the 33 Senate seats on the ballot this fall, a numerical disadvantage that buoyed GOP hopes of reaching their goal early in the cycle, especially since many of the Democratic-held seats are also in hotly contested presidential battlegrounds.

President Barack Obama leads Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in Virginia, Ohio and Florida, according to the same NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls released Thursday.

Each of the Marist polls was conducted Sept. 9-11. Each poll has a 3.1 percent margin of error for its sample of likely voters.

Yay - if we take a few Senate Seats back and gain control of the House we can actually work to get the country back on track faster - without the obstructionists delaying the progress.

It would serve the GOP right if they lost lots of Senate seats and the Democrats took back control of the House!

Keep it up! Just a little over a month and a half to go!

Obama/Biden 2012 and a Democratic majority in both the Senate and House!

According to a poll taken this past weekend in Ohio and Virginia, 15% of Republicans in each state, believe Romney should get credit for taking down Osama bin Laden. About 50% in each state were unsure or didn't know, so a minority of them knew Obama got credit for it. Is there anyone that would like to explain how so many of these people are so misinformed or uninformed? This is very weird. To think they would give Romney credit for something he couldn't have done. Maybe the magical wet underwear had something to do with it, I just don't know. I am not sure any rational person can explain this, but be my guest. Give it a try. I'm not sure that even FOX Noise would go that far, but I could be wrong.

The problem is, a simple majority isn't enough. Republicans like to point out that when the Democrats had a majority in the House and Senate with Obama in the White House, they still couldn't get anything done. It was because of the filibuster that allows a small minority to control what the majority is able, or not able, to do. The party of "NO" was able to shut the majority down. Never before in our nation's history has the filibuster been used so extensively and disgracefully. Compromise was no longer necessary and was thrown out the window. Most importantly, partisan Republican interests were placed ahead of national interests (e.g., debt ceiling debacle). Republicans are disgusting in their partisanship.

If we are to move forward, this gridlock (AKA Tea Party) has to go.

If we want jobs, we need to give our President a Congress that will work with him, instead of focusing solely on ousting him. The republicans have failed miserably, and incredibly, they think their best move was to nominate a miserable failure for their candidate.

I am heartened to see that they "can't fool all of the people all the time". They have to settle for fooling "some of the people all the time". Baggers.

perfect comment. I hope Scott Brown gets his azz kicked by Elizabeth Warren. When he was first elected, I thought that he would be one of those who put Mass first and loyalty to his party second. I was disapointed very quickly.

Plus I am sick of waching Scott Brown's informercials showing him drive his TRUCK while talking to the camera. If that's all he's got to offer (driving his truck) then it's time to give his seat to someone else.

Once again I am proven correct. You really should start listening to me, you know. I told you months ago I thought the President would win re-election in a landslide large enough to have a real "coat-tail" effect which would reach down the ballot and enable the Democrats to shore up the Senate and perhaps take back the House. Well? There you have it.

Brent,

The answer to your question about why some Republican supporters would credit Romney with killing Bin Laden is fairly simple; some Americans are, in fact, exceptional. But some are exceptionally STUPID, and apparently many of those live in Ohio and plan to vote Republican. So to the Republicans who have a grasp on reality, I would simply remind them that 'one is known by the company one keeps'.

What does Warren have: I am part Cherokee to get a plum job and now wants to close that loophole as soon as everyone discovered she was lying. She is nothing but a liar. Doesn't matter if the oversample democrats in the poll. All that does is tell those who want free stuff that everything is ok for them so they will stay home and not vote. The only poll that counts is the one just before the election. That will tell the true story. How does it feel that those in Libya killed could have saved if President Obama had beefed up security per 9-11 protocols. And now a report that says we had 48 hour advance notice and what did Obama do: prepare for his Vegas fundraiser. All he is interested in is getting reelected and not the American people.

Democrats claim that the GOP obstructs with the filibuster yet they do nothing when they had power to eliminate that. Why? How about Harry Reid not sending any House passed bills to the Senate floor for votes. Who is obstructing who?

Economy is in a downturn, gas prices are rising, food prices are rising and the Middle East is in shambles. All of this is on Obama. Gone in November, the great mistake corrected.

Out in the real world people as frightened of what 4 more years of Obama would do to this country. The disconnect between what people are seeing and what the main-stream media is reporting is flabbergasting. Obama's plan is to spend, spend, spend! Oh, and he wants to tax the rich, which will give libs 15 minutes of satisfaction followed by 4 more years of "how come I'm not better off." About the only way Obama can win is by taking advantage of the lack of photo ID requirements. After all, that's why they've been fighting against it.

Sorry, but apparently the majority of Americans in the states that Willard needs to win see very clearly. It was definitely Obama's decision to put two wars and a trillion $ tax break on America's credit card wasn't it? While republicans held the house, the senate, and the presidency, they blew up the nation's debt by convincing average morons like you that trickle down economics works. If it does, then explain where the jobs are, and explain why the economy is not booming right now. While you're at it, explain why the economy was roaring during the Clinton years when taxes were higher. You idiots elected teabaggers to office in the mid-term elections to fix Washington, but what have they done since being elected? Not a budget passed for the last 3 years and now you want to elect the head of the congressional budget committee as VP of this country?!?!? I don't think the republican party could poor piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heal, but they definitely can't do simple math. richard, my whole life I thought that I was 100% Polish since I thought both of my parents had a 100% Polish heritage. Not so long ago, I found out that someone on my mom's side, moved to Poland from Ukraine many decades ago. Even though I don't have all the details, it appears that for thirty something years I have been "lying" about my heritage. I wonder if YOU are 100% sure where YOU come from because I doubt it.

Now let's take Scott Brown lies:

Brown claimed that he didn't cover his adult daughter under Obamacare, but he did.

Or that he had voted to close some loopholes, such as a tax subsidy for ethanol

Or that Rachel Maddow was going to run against him.

Or the giving up drinking beer

Or during a CNN interview, Scott Brown said that President Obama and other powerful Democrats are regularly phoning him to get help passing their legislation

Or - AND THIS IS THE BIG ONE - that he is independent, bipartisan, truck driving kinda guy

But you keep hanging on to the only thing you have about Warren - whether she is part Cherokee or not.

slueth & bayllie: Excellent point about the budget! The first 2 years the dems controlled everything. Not one vote for any of Obama's budgets, yet you want to blame the repubs. Oh, and yes! Things were definitely better under Bush. Obama has already increased the deficit more in less than 4 years than Bush did in all of his 8 years. And even then, the biggest deficits were run during his last 2 years when the dems controlled Congress. I would agree that Bush spent too much, but that was part of his "getting along" with the dems. He basically gave them everything they wanted. The bailout? Again, Bush going along with the dems. The banking crisis? Bush warned it was coming because of the easy money through Fannie and Freddie. Congress refused to act and the dems filibustered in the Senate.

Unemployment when Bush left office: 7.6% Unemployment now: 8.1% (because millions aren't counted as they left the workforce, if you even used the same number of people looking for jobs as when Bush left office, then unemployment would be around 11.5%). Deficit increase under 8 years of Bush: $4 trillion. Deficit in less than 4 years of Obama: over $6 trillion.

Of course, ignorance and forgetfulness is bliss, but the Bush tax cuts did keep the economy going after 9/11. The economy was booming under the first 7 years of Bush in spite of the constant barrage of dems and lib media to the contrary. Policies of Obama to spur the economy: 0! Please name one policy of Obama that spurred the economy. Even the stimulus didn't create jobs as the money went to Obama's cronies and didn't create jobs. You'd think a stimulus package larger than the defense budget would have brought unemployment down to 4%. But, it didn't even do the modest thing that Obama promised, which was to keep unemployment under 8%.

So, yes! Going back to Bush would definitely be better. Of course, even better than that is going forward and doing a real job of stopping government from killing jobs and taking so much money from people. The only hope of that is Romney/Ryan. Obama has done nothing but promise more of the same. Do you really think being $20 trillion in debt is good for the economy?

The other night I had dinner with two lawyers who'd been to school with George Allen. They said that he was widely seen among his classmates as one of the dumnest students they'd ever met, and everyone was very surprised he passed. He was also well-known for his racist jokes from day one -- the Macaca incident was no surprise to anyone.

Kaine is being outspent by outside money 3 to 1, yet he's tied. That's a real sign of the weakness of George Allen.

George Allen relies on people remembering that his daddy, of the same name, coached the Redskins. His daddy was a good coach, the coach's son, however, has a case of the tards. His mother must have been a beast of a woman. George Allen did more damage than any governor in VA history. He set up contracts with Waste Management and other waste disposal firms, that made Virginia the #2 importer of out of state garbage, taking in trash from 26 other states including New York and Maryland. Does anyone remember about a decade ago, there was an outbreak of West Nile Virus in New York? Well, VA is now suffering the effects because mosquitos lay eggs in the water inside tires and the trash from New York is diverted to VA, thus the virus is spreading here now. That's just the beginning of the damage all this garbage is causing. Allen knew when he set these contracts up that it would take an act of Congress to stop it because they're calling it "interstate commerce."

Willard, AKA Mitt the Twitt, is simply a repulsive puppet, and the guys pulling the strings are even worse. They care more about accumulating even more wealth on top of fantastic riches instead of helping their country pull itself out of the mess created by Party Boy Bush.

The ideal is that this momentum keeps up and the president is re-elected and gets a congress and senate he can work with. If "I ain't got a clue" Romney wins we need control in both houses for balance in all things political. Remeber the Bush Years, 17 of Romneys 22 advisors are Bush hand me downs and are already thumping the war drums as a way to show the world how strong America is. We need smarter not harder.

I think the 9% approval rating for Congress is too kind.

Romney has recycled all the Bush economic advisors. He also touts the same "voodoo economics" that Bush did (BTW, who coined that phrase? Why, none other than George H. W. Bush!). The only details we have of Romney's economic plan is "cut taxes, lower the deficit!" two mutually exclusive actions, just like George W. Bush.

No, make no mistake - in all but name, Bush is running again! And, if elected, we can expect the same disastrous results we got the last time!

If the GOP loses the Presidential race, and control of the House, they can't afford to continue to shut down the mechanisms of government, even by filibuster.

To filibuster under that scenario would guarantee them huge losses in the 2014 mid term elections.

Even if the November election results in the status quo, the GOP has to carefully select their battles, they can't fight them all.

That's just the problem Andrae, right now the GOP can argue that the Democrats are also incapable of presenting any plan, and point to Harry Reid.

But, if the Democrats control both the House and the Senate, and the Presidency, and the Republicans filibuster everything, the GOP will be in an exposed position of shutting down the ability to govern this country.

That won't go over real big with the voters, and the GOP will crash and burn in the midterm elections.

Perhaps you should go to a dictionary, if you have one, and look up the word control. Then, compare that with the period the Democrats held the most seats in congress and the Senate. You should, but I know you won't, realize that "majority" in our government does not equate to "control".

With all due respect, I think you are overestimating the American public's ability to reason using basic logic. If what you say were true, Obama wouldn't be in a position of defending himself, as all the GOP has done for the last 3 years is OBSTRUCT. I really wish average Americans would wake up and vote for the only party that's fighting for them right now, but religion and willful ignorance seem to get in the way.

I'm in the top 1% of income earners in this country and I can't understand how so many people are willing to vote against their own self interests. Perfect example, when the GOP had control of the house, senate, and presidency under Bush, did they pass a bill outlawing abortion or gay rights? NOPE! Yet that is all most of the right wing's religious zealots are holding onto by voting Republican. At the same time, they are willing to give me another tax break even though I don't need it. If America is to succeed going forward, we need a strong and vibrant middle class! Us 1%er's have the financial freedom to adapt to anything the federal government throws at us, but not those that live paycheck to paycheck or have just a few thousand in savings. Time to get the middle class back!!!

Unless the Democrats have 60 certifiable Democrats in the Senate, ONE REPUBLICAN can block anything. The period the Dems had 60, include TWO Independants, only one of whom could be counted on, and TWO Democrats that habitually voted WITH the Republicans. Remember that EVERY VOTE counts!!!!! Jimmy Carter was the second worst President, Obama aka Jimmy Jr. is the worst.

The killings of the US ambassador to Libya and three of his staff were likely to have been the result of a serious and continuing security breach, The Independent can reveal.

American officials believe the attack was planned, but Chris Stevens had been back in the country only a short while and the details of his visit to Benghazi, where he and his staff died, were meant to be confidential.

The US administration is now facing a crisis in Libya. Sensitive documents have gone missing from the consulate in Benghazi and the supposedly secret location of the "safe house" in the city, where the staff had retreated, came under sustained mortar attack. Other such refuges across the country are no longer deemed "safe".

Some of the missing papers from the consulate are said to list names of Libyans who are working with Americans, putting them potentially at risk from extremist groups, while some of the other documents are said to relate to oil contracts.

According to senior diplomatic sources, the US State Department had credible information 48 hours before mobs charged the consulate in Benghazi, and the embassy in Cairo, that American missions may be targeted, but no warnings were given for diplomats to go on high alert and "lockdown", under which movement is severely restricted.

I'm sure the Kock Brothers will be spending millions on 'poll watchers' and doing everything they can to discourage minorities from voting.

They started this crap in 2000 when Party Boy Bush's team worked on Florida to spread leaflets identifying incorrect poll locations to try to get people to go to the wrong place to vote. They have a substantial investment in Mitt the Twitt, and they are going to spend more to protect that.

What we need is a veritable landslide to erase any doubt. America is not for sale. The Kock Brothers can stay in their own private Idaho. We don't want any part of them. This is our country, and we're taking it back from the baggers.

Here's some news from your alternate reality, known to most of us as just "reality".

                http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-09-13/yen-strengthens-asian-stocks-little-changed-before-fed-decision.html

Ben and Obama, weakening our dollar pennies at a time.

Ben must live in your world because in spite of real world evidence he claims there is no inflation, he also claimed that unicorns exist and Obama will be giving everyone free homes and a Chevy Volt from "his stash". Make sure you're in line.

You people should get out of your bubble more, Obama's not nearly as popular as you think. Nowhere. In Cairo, where three years ago he began his world tour of embarassing America and making us look weak, the natives were chanting, "Obama, Obama, there's a billion Osamas".

He's not nearly as popular in America either. His biggest fan is Jimmy Carter because Jimmy's no longer the weakest President since........well, since Carter.

You must live in a fantasy world or simply don't believe in statistics....but keep telling yourself that, but also you should prepare your self for obamas reelection because of the following reasons, obama leads all polls, secondly if obama wins just one of the following battle ground states there will be absolutely no way Romney can win(ohio, florida, virginia, or north carolina...are you familiar with the way the electoral college works?) the presidency this is based on empirical and statistical data. Third Romney will be blasted in the debates by Obama(Romney has no platform and only vague suggestions to offer). Obama has multiple routes to reelection, Romney doesn't ....but hey I doubt fox news would let their viewers know that. Your convention was week and boring the only minorities were on stage...the audience looked like an assisted living convention....smfh

Interesting but typical right wing moniker, BTW. I'll bet you $10,000 of Romney's money Obama wins, and the margins just keep widening. Can't wait for the debates. You might be right about a landslide, but you're backing the wrong horse.

Don't believe a word of it. The press and journalists have proven to be nothing but liars and are so far in the tank for Obama it's a disgrace. News reporters used to keep their personal feelings out of their reporting, but not anymore. The old saying "don't believe anything you read and only half of what you see" has now turned into "DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU HEAR OR READ FROM THE PRESS".

                amerigirl,

When you or your campaign begin to blame the press , the campaign is desperate.

Romney's campaign was doing that today.

And when those in the GOP running for Senate start with" vote for me , we need balance in DC" you know it is all over. Watch for this switch in close Senate races in mid Ocotber.

Actually, right wingers have been crying about the biased press for as long as I can remember, and I'm 71 tomorrow. They just refuse to believe that anything can be true unless it supports their twisted and warped world view. Mr. Murdoch saw a huge opportunity there, brought us FoxNews, and began feeding the wingers whatever they wanted to hear. Then, because wingers have trouble putting 2 and 2 together, he brought in Hannity, O'Reilly and the rest to 'splain things to them in terms as simple as possible, which fits their thought process. Rush, ever the entrepreneur, set out on his own to reap the same harvest. He has fun at it, because he realizes, with this audience, you can't say anything too outrageous, too crude, too bizarre, or too false. As long as it fuels the right wing flames, bring it on!

So the theme remains the same as it was in the late 80's and early 90's - Farce and Unbalanced!

Here in Ohio, we have met State Treasurer, Josh Mandel, several times. In fact one of my children volunteered for him when he ran for state senate. He used to be a young, creative, caring guy, but now he has become like the rest of the republicans, a liar, only looking for political gain. He didn't do much as a state senator, and little as treasurer. The voters in my family will vote for Sherrod Brown.

I really hope we can win the Senate and House, and show the rethuglicans and tea-baggers that their day came and went just as fast. More and more people are not buying into the idea that you can cut taxes, and increase spending by 7 trillion dollars, 2 trillion on defense spending and 5 trillion on tax cuts. This is Bush economic policy that has led to the greatest decline in America since the great depression.

M.J. CT - Things that President Obama proposed that were flatly rejected by the republican house and filibustered by the Senate:

Jobs bill that would have put a projected 5-7 million back to work on infrastructure, education and public safety. PAID FOR.

Proposed budget that would have eliminated the debt in 10-12 years through cuts in discrectionary spending, closing corporate loopholes and targeted tax cuts and increases. PAID FOR.

Grand bargain with Beohner which would have cut 4 trillion from the budget by proposing $10 cuts for every $1 revenue brought in. PAID FOR.

Actually, Obama has said that he was willing to pay more in taxes, hence not enhancing himself, and if giving more tax cuts to the struggling is selfish, then we may have a difference in the definition of selfish. Running for Pres. so you can give yourself a tax cut, is a selfish motive. The Pres. offering to pay more taxes and let the middle class keep their tax cuts for awhile longer is more selfless. I know this is pointless, as you won't believe it anyway, but I attempted in showing you some truth in the matter. It's all good as long as we don't get carried away.

...the numbers for Bush's last three months. Between October and November, 597,000 jobs were lost; between November and December, 681,000 were lost; and between December and January, 741,000 were lost.

April 2012 marks the 26th straight month of gains in private-sector employment, for a total of 4.2 million private-sector jobs.

Dec 29, 2008 (Bloomberg) U.S. corporate earnings fell for a sixth-straight quarter, the longest streak in at least 20 years, as consumer spending on automobiles, homes and retailers collapsed.

May 11, 2012 Fortune magazine released its ranking of the 500 biggest US corporations Monday, which showed that they received a record-breaking $824 billion in combined profits in 2011, up 16 percent from 2010.

Only in leftie la-la land do they think Romney has a "foreign policy blunder". Romney stood up for American principles.

Obama owns foreign policy and he has failed miserably at it. Not just the last couple of weeks but since he has taken office, beginning with his Neville Chamberlain impression in Cairo in 2009.

Only in leftie la-la land do they think Romney has a "foreign policy blunder".

Well, in leftie la-la land, we pay attention to things like definitions: You know like:

response - something constituting a reply or a reaction

A little bit of thought would tell you that statements issued prior to an event cannot properly be labeled a "response". The problem, evidently is that "little bit of thought", something Romney couldn't manage.

Yeppirs, that's who I want as president... NOT!

53 days left and Wrongme still does not have a plan. He is too busy inserting and removing his foot from his mouth. He's really working hard at that!

The obscure and vague 59 points he outlined a few years ago is no plan, and only points out how little the republican ticket offers.

Fix the economy. (how? none of your business.)
                  Create jobs. (see above)
                  Monitor women's vaginas.
Discriminate against anyone not old and white.

                  That's all they got.

You gotta lot of work to do, your party is falling behind everyday. Look at the electoral map and the swing state polls getting wider for Obama. Cant wait for the next set of polls taken after Romneys Foreign Policy embarrassment.

                  Ryan/Romney is in TROUBLE

What about all the rest of the seat? Aren't they all important? If you look at the RCP Average the gop is set to gain 5 seats.

The job of the Obama propaganda machine is to make us think Obama has a huge following. He's is trouble, the fraud vote has been practically eliminated due to the diligence of conscientious Americans.

For instance, in Florida alone the difference between Democrats newly registering to vote this cycle and the 2008 cycle is down by nearly 200,000 people. Republican registration is up by 135,000. Romney will win Florida. Especially after the foreign policy blunders Obama has made in the last couple of weeks concerning his treatment of Bibi and Israel.

It's almost a foregone conclusion that Obama will win the election. However, it is vitally important that the Democrats also win majorities in both houses. Obama MUST have a legislative body that will work with him and not against him, as Congress has been doing, to the detriment of the American People. I've always been an Independent Voter. I'm not looking at political ads, and don't care about qualifications. I'm voting Democrat across every national and local election ballot right down to dog catcher.

If every seat goes according to the Real Clear Politics average the Democrats will win 11 seats to the GOP's 10. That would seem to be good for the Democrats except democrats currently hold 16 of the 21 seats they really would lose 5 and control of the senate.

Obama is personally responsible for the death of the ambassador to Lybia Christopher Stevens and his aides.. He had the intelligence reports and warnings that something was coming on 911.. He failed to secure and defend those lives in the field.. He failed to get them out and to safety... How despicable for a president not to understand the intelligence briefs that are "emailed" to him...

Instead he was out campaigning in Las Vegas the day after the death... This just makes me sick! The audacity of the is pretender in chief to care about anyone but himself...

Obama has got to go...Let's vote this Carter II out of office... Nov 6..

@djames, man you are so full of manure it isn't funny. You complain about not heading the intel reports. He was just following your hero Bush on that. Yep, GW had advance notice, and he let the twin towers and the puzzle palace get hit. That really should make you sick. And since you still have CDS, don't complain that I mentioned Bush, I maynot have gotten over the BDS yet.

No matter who wins or loses, some people will be crying and others laughing. So keep up braggin on who is going to win, those taunts may come back to haunt you.

Americans have gotten a good look at the party over country republicons and understandably do not like what they saw.

It will be a good thing when the Democrats get a filibuster proof majority for at least 2 years and actually are able to get things done. In the 1930s the New Deal created 9% growth, and it would be a good thing for America to do that again.

The republicans are so certain about the reality they paint they are not thinking. What will be interesting is what will happen in November after they fail to reach their number one goal (making Obama a one term president). Maybe Karl Rove will begin to resemble Harold Camping on May 22nd 2011. In the meantime, I say keep doing what you are doing, only more and faster. The cliff is in sight.

Just some facts: 12 trillion dollar National debt, 1.2 trillion dollar budget defecit, losing jobs at the rate of 800,000/month, stock market value cut in half, home values cut by 35%, embroiled in two "nation building" wars. That is what Obama was handed when he assumed the presidency. He did NOT cause any of this. And the "right" blames him for not fixing all of these problems in two years? Two years is all he got, since the "right" gained control of the House in 2010. Any reasonable person knows that a president has only very limited control when the "other party" controls either of the branches of Congress. Even the Republican presidential nominee has said this. Think for yourselves. Not as you are told to think.

The poll is heavy Democrats by 12 points....

This will help Obama also... He also missed the briefing regarding this.
