Romney puts softer edge on Libya criticism

FAIRFAX, VA -- Mitt Romney kept up with his criticism of President Barack Obama's handling of a diplomatic crisis in Libya, but softened his tone ever so slightly amid scrutiny of the GOP presidential candidate's initial criticism of the president.

“As we watch the world today, sometimes it seems that we’re at the mercy of events, instead of shaping events, and a strong America is essential to shape events. And a strong American, by the way, depends on a strong military," Romney said, launching into a critique of pending military budget cuts.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney campaigns at a rally in Fairfax, Virginia.

"The world needs American leadership. The Middle East needs American leadership," Romney continued. "And I intend to be a President that provides the leadership that America respects and will keep us admired throughout the world.”

Romney's words, a day after a coordinated assault on a diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, left America's ambassador to that country, Christopher Stevens, and three other Americans dead, represent a downshift in rhetoric from Wednesday.

Yesterday, Romney followed a harshly written statement criticizing the administration -- released as events were still unfolding at an American consulate under attack in Libya -- with a press conference doubling down on what he called a weak response by the Obama White House. Today, Romney's only overt mention of Libya and the death of the U.S. ambassador and four others there, was a statement of mourning and an attempted moment of silence which was disrupted by a protester.

"I also recognize that right now were in mourning, we've lost four of our diplomats across the world. We're thinking about their families and those that they've left behind," Romney said as a protester ripped a Romney sign in half and began shouting at Romney for politicizing the attacks in Libya. "I would offer a moment of silence but one gentleman doesn't want to be silent so were going to keep on going."

The GOP contender returned to firmer footing today in the shadow of the nation's capital by renewing his economic attacks on the president, accusing Obama of failing to offer any new ideas to fix a troubled economy, and attempting to claim the mantle of change.

"His policies have not worked. How in the world he can go before a Democrat convention and speak to the nation and offer nothing but more of the same is beyond me," Romney said. "We want real change.  I’m going to bring real change and get America working again.”

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney greets supporters after speaking at a campaign rally in Fairfax, Va., on September 13, 2012.

"These policies won’t make America stronger- they’re part of the same formula that crashed the economy and devastated the middle class in the first place. America can’t afford to go back," said Lis Smith, an Obama campaign spokeswoman, in response.

Surrounded on stage by women, and introduced by four female speakers, Romney's intended audience today was clear. Polling has indicated Romney consistently trailing Obama with women voters, but several recent surveys have shown the challenger gaining some support.

Are you guys on drugs? Romney's numbers are increasing and Obama's bounce glow is fading. His articulate accurate criticism of Obama's bungling the Middle East fiasco, must be right on for the media to spend three days harping on it.

The media is pissing down liberals necks and telling them that it is raining. Romney made no blunder -- just a distinction in a robust , pro-American foreign policy and a fledgling, tepid, laughable Universalism proposed by Obama.

My God. Barack Hussein Obama -- the appeaser, the apologizer, the failed leader, the naive -- has blood on his hands THE BLOOD OF AMERICAN HEROES and you want to talk about Romney and Bush and blame a fricking movie???? Are you sh!ttin' me!!!! First you have thunder thighs come out and make a ridiculous statement about the attacks on America being perpetrated a small group when it turned out to be a coordinated effort in several countries but you care about Romney's statement which was strong and right on target???? I disagree with any one -- on both sides -- that his statements were wrong. At least he had the courage to face questions from media conspirators. Hussein the COWARD gives a statement then ducks and runs to LV where he can campaign and talk in an environment he can control.

Where was the intelligence???? How did it fail???? Why aren't these the questions on your minds today??? OUR COUNTRY WAS ATTACKED AGAIN AND THIS A$$HOLE SITS ON HIS THUMBS (CAUSE HE LIKES THE FEELING) AND DOES NOTHING AND LOOKS WEEK. THESE PEOPLE HATE AMERICA -- CAN'T YOU GET THAT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULLS?????

Hussein lied through his teeth in LV and is relying on his cutesy sound bites. How miserably UNPRESIDENTiAL is that??? Fricking AMATEUR!!!!!

The United States of Islam is what this POS of a president is shooting for and leaving Israel out to dry. All of you should be ashamed.

Assuming Harley's comments were not meant as satire, then I have to conclude that this is the early signs of either overdose or that shakes from withdrawal. I've been reading reader posts and listening to the likes of Hannity for two days now and have come to the conclusion that they know they are down by six with less than 30 seconds on the clock. They will foul to stop the clock. They will fake an injury. They will put six players on the court for a full court press. They've pulled the goalie. But worst - in their pursuit of convincing half the voters that the earth is flat - they have called out a fleet of bulldozers to fill in the oceans. (OK bad analogy - but the point is that the GOP now lives and operates in an alternative universe. Reason is pointless. Whatever grain of truth they may have in their arguments is buried so deep in their nonsense, that even they don't know where the facts are).

Let's make sure one more time that everyone interested gets to see this --

http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/159873#.UFIQyrKPWWg

The warnings supposedly given by Israel prior to the attacks DID NOT involve Libya, and DID NOT involve September 11.

They were about possible attacks on the US and Israeli embassies in Cairo.

And Israelis were specifically warned to be careful traveling the weekend BEFORE September 11.

So, righties, tell me again what the President, who reads all his daily briefings, supposedly missed.

And tell me again why attendance at those briefings was so important, given that George W. Bush dismissed the warnings that were literally put in his face. They had to be put in his face because he didn't want to have to read so much, and not because he wanted to ask questions about him.

When the critical briefing did come, Bush brushed the briefer off and told him, "Okay, you've covered your a$$. He then went back to clearing brush. So tell me again how is this is morally superior to the President reading his daily briefings and then going back to his other scheduled activities?

Didn't Romney screw up enough on Russia ("the geopolitical focus"", China's Chen, England, Israel and this rest of his foreign trip?

And now blaming the President for the Cairo diplomatic statement - that was released SIX HOURS before the attack.

And BEFORE the Ambassador, 3 staffers and 10 Libyans who were protecting them DIED??

HE's STILL AT IT?

Elliot -

Are you really reduced to copying/pasting distortions from from Breitbart? Did you read through what you copied, or did you think it just sounded good?

The complete statement from the US Embassy in Egypt:

The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others

I challenge anyone to show me where the apology is in that statement. I see condemnation of "hate speech", a statement of our respect for other religions, and an acknowledgement of the right of free speech. The statement was issued by the US Embassy BEFORE the attacks in an effort to AVOID violence.

Mitt Romney was DEAD WRONG in his statement:

I'm outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi.

It's disgraceful that the Obama Administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks. - Mitt Romney (emphasis added)

So for breitbart.com to say that Romney did not know an American had died is a flat-out lie - Romney explicitly mentions it in his statement!

Romney is effectively the leader of the free world today, the man whose principled reaction to events expressed what ought to be--and used to be--the minimum Americans expect of their president.

You wish. We have one President - Barack Obama. Romney is neither qualified nor competent to be the "leader of the free world" as demonstrated by his political posturing over the deaths of American citizens.

A principled reacton would have been to condemn the actions of the terrorists and ensure everyone that America stands united in their quest for justice. A principled reaction would have been to condemn and denounce the "hate speech" contained in the anti-Muslim film. A principled reaction would have been to wait for all the facts before you made a statement.

It is disgustingly obvious that Romney and his followers have chosen to place their political party ahead of their country, even while American lives are still at risk.

Sirie- Hindsight is always 20/20. I hope you place equal blame on GW Bush and Ronald Reagan for their respective failures to prevent 9/11 and the Beirut Embassy bombing. GW Bush was on vacation 69 days prior to 9/11 - how many security briefings did he miss or ignore?

Those truly responsible are the terrorist who attacked our embassy. Our focus should be on bringing them to justice, not scoring political points.

The warnings supposedly given by Israel -- uh no by Egypt.

And Israelis were specifically warned to be careful traveling the weekend BEFORE September 11. -- Can't seem to find that in the story.

So, righties, tell me again what the President, who reads all his daily briefings, supposedly missed. That's easy -- common sense.

P.S. -- Bush isn't president. An A$$hole currently is president. Let's worry about the blood on his hands -- the blood of the American heroes in Libya that lost their lives. Where was the intelligence? Not in the WH.

The Egyptian General Intelligence Service warned that a radical jihadi group is planning to launch terrorist attacks against the US and Israeli embassies in Cairo, the Egypt Independent reported.

Israel has accused the group, dubbed Global Jihad, of being responsible for the August 5 attack in Sinai against Egyptian border guards, which left 16 dead.

The Egyptian Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper reportedly obtained a copy of a top secret letter addressed to Major General Samy Sedhom, first assistant Interior Minister for Social Security, on September 4, which stated that intelligence services notified the ministry’s national security body that elements from the organization in Egypt and Gaza were planning attacks on the two embassies.

Security sources said the letter was forwarded to Egyptian security officials, informing them to undertake the necessary measures. The sources added that Military Intelligence informed the Interior Ministry one week ago that 22 terrorists in Sinai are planning to attack vital facilities and police checkpoints, according to the Egypt Independent.

Meanwhile, the Israeli National Security Council Counter-Terrorism Bureau issued a travel warning last week to Israelis and Jews around the world.

The warning came in light of the upcoming holidays, during which many Israelis travel abroad.

The warning said that, “in the wake of the string of attacks and attempted attacks that occurred this year, Iran and Hizbullah are continuing their increased efforts to implement additional attacks, focusing on the intent to harm Israeli tourist destinations around the world.”

The warning specifically mentioned the Sinai Peninsula, stressing that Israelis should avoid traveling to the area due to heightened security alerts.

You can always tell when things are going well for President Obama by the over-the-top spin coming from the right. You get dizzy reading this stuff.

Seriously, you have to question the mentality of those like Ben who won't be happy unless the US bombs Egypt and Libya to smithereens--it's the Bush/Cheney mentality. I would remind Ben and the other naybobbers that Mitt Romney said nothing about what he would do if he were president, now did he? He just stood on the sidelines taking pot shots, politicizing the deaths of Americans and without getting his facts straight--in other words, Mitt lied about this just as he lies about everything else.

Are you talking about the same Gallup that had this in 2010 before a massive a$$ whippin'?

Republicans and Democrats are now tied at 45% in registered voters' preferences for which party's congressional candidate they would support "if the elections for Congress were being held today." Since last fall, the two major parties have been closely matched on this important gauge of the 2010 midterm elections, with neither achieving more than a four percentage-point lead. In mid-2009, the Democrats led by six points.

Romney doesn't have many friends in the GOP mainly because of how dirty the campaign for the nomination was. He pissed on a lot of shoes by telling lies about the field of hopefuls. Unpresidential ..... ya think?????!!!

....both reliable conventional-wisdom-peddlers and even some right-wing analysts said that Romney had made a serious mistake by distorting the timeline of the Egyptian embassy's response to the protests, and by making such a harsh political attack on the White House.

As Wednesday wore on, pundits continued reacting with astonishment at Romney's response. Speaking to Rachel Maddow, NBC's Andrea Mitchell said that "It was one of those moments where the character and the policy were both revealed." She speculated that Romney may have been looking to satisfy some of the conservative commentators who have been openly attacking his campaign strategy.

"I think they were looking for an opportunity," she said. "...This is a serious business. This is not the stuff of combative political press releases. I can't recall, Rachel, and I don't think you can, another time when the United States was under fire, literally, where a presidential candidate in either party put out a press release.

Peggy Noonan, who made waves with her criticism of Romney on Fox News, had an even more withering assessment for her own Wall Street Journal.

"Romney looked weak today," she said. "At one point, he had a certain slight grimace on his face when he was taking tough questions from the reporters, and I thought, 'He looks like Richard Nixon.'"

On Thursday morning, Joe Scarborough said he had been "absolutely flabbergasted" by Romney's response.

Even Bill O'Reilly called Romney out, though very briefly. Playing footage of Romney criticizing the Egyptian embassy for issuing a statement that was "akin to apology."

"I'm not sure the Governor is correct on that," O'Reilly said. "The embassy was trying to head off the violence. Being conciliatory in that kind of a situation seems logical."

Newspaper editorial boards across the country blasted Romney's response as well. The Washington Post called it "a discredit to his campaign" and the Los Angeles Times said it was an "outrageous exercise in opportunism." The Boston Globe labeled it "offensive on many other levels" beyond the timing of his remarks.

The fact-checking brigades also had their knives out for Romney. The Associated Press, for instance, said he had "seriously mischaracterized what had happened in a statement accusing President Barack Obama of "disgraceful" handling of violence there and at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo."

haggisbingo-2225582,

Then why is the White House back-peddling about the Cairo statement? Even they are distancing themselves from the "apology" and throwing the author under the bus.

Besides, Obama made the bigger gaffe by saying that Egypt is not an ally. News to them, I guess.

...can everybody say "Manifest Destiny..." ? It would appear that Mr. Romney feels that what is good for the USA is better for the rest of the world. Honestly...talk about stuck in the past! All this sabre rattling is disgusting! Why is it the party (TPGOP) of "we believe in the sanctity of life" so stuck on constant war? It appears they only believe in the sanctity of life for the unborn. Everyone else--not so much.

Romney needs some strong deodorant. The smell of GOP flop sweat has permeated his entire campaign.

The GOP puppet masters knew from the start it was going to go this way. None of their primary candidates were worth a used kleenex. Nobody in the Republican party with an ounce of sense was willing to go up against President Obama. They're lying in wait until 2016.

Well, GOPers, it might just be too late to make a comeback in four years. With all the anti-American cr*p the GOP has pulled so far-- and we still have a full 54 days to go until the election-- the GOP might have already succeeded in committing political suicide on a scale previously known only to lemmings.

Sad to see it happen, actually. We need two opposing parties in America. Go on now, GOP, go spend 40 years in the desert and come back real, come back with a heart, come back with a brain. Leave Romney's bones out in the salt flats for the buzzards.

You can leave Ryan out there too.

Q22: President Obama is correct about Egypt. Its new president is part of the Muslim Brotherhood and has said ,"Jerusalem shall be our capital," meaning he intends that muslims will dispossess Israel. Obama's comment went further, as follows:

Obama said in an interview with the Spanish-language network Telemundo that Egypt is a ‘‘new government that is trying to find its way.’’ And he warned that if the Egyptian government takes actions showing ‘‘they’re not taking responsibility,’’ then it would ‘‘be a real big problem.’’

Israel's ambassador said today Obama's assessment was "realistic." You can find that clip in video here on nbc.com.

THis is how desperate the GOP is getting these days. The current odds of Obama winning in November are 80.8% to Romney's 19.2%. At this point Romney has to carry ALL of eight states --- Florida, Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, Colorado, Wisconsin, Virginia, and Iowa to have even a mathematical chance of winning. Currently he is only favored in North Carolina and even that state has dropped by over 15% in the last two weeks.

Incidentally, in 2008 McCain led in aggregated polls for only 4 days in the entire campaign. (The four days after he selected Palin.) But after the 9/15/08 Lehman Bros debacle his campaign collapsed and it quickly became mathematically improbable for him to win. I find it interesting that Romney has managed to lead for exactly zero days and his campaign is collapsing similarly after his 9/12/12 debacle. He is doing significantly worse than McCain/Palin. Few pundits thought that was even possible.

But there is a hard core 25% who will vote against Obama even if it means voting for a three-legged dog. And Romney is pretty much that three-legged dog ---- a non-Christian, a person who inherited wealth, a tax cheat and a draft dodger. Just what the GOP loves the most!

But Romney, unlike McCain is methodically destroying the Republican brand. With changing demographics and a political landscape that is becoming more and more hostile to old white male racist Republicans this is likely the last election in which the GOP will be considered viable for national office. About the only thing left for Romney to do is to appear in full Grand Dragon KKK regalia.

Well, Mitt Robme's specialties are buying American companies and taking out millions of dollars in loans against those companies, then laying off those companies' workers, stealing their pension and retirement money, then taking those companies into bankruptcy so that Romney doesn't have to pay back those loans, and shipping all of those American Jobs Overseas. Mitt has made about a half-a-billion-dollars doing exactly that!

Then Romney hides all his profits in off-shore accounts, or in Switzerland, so that Romney doesn't have to pay American taxes on all the money he stole, I mean earned(?), well, you know.

Now, after some 30 years or more of Robme robbing the American People the same way and making hundreds of millions of dollars doing exactly that, Republicans think Romney is going to change?

      Q22,

You're very pessimistic. Obama was very smart in distancing our country from Egypt. Many in Egypt believe that we supported Mubarrak and his brutal suppression of his political opponents. Now they have a new President who will succeed at his job and will be more moderate if he can prove he is just not another American puppet, but his own man.

If we pressure him, he will have to push us away which would force him to take more anti-American positions. By voluntarily distancing our country from his, we give him the opportunity to pursue more moderate policies and calm the extremist elements in Egypt.

Republicans seem to think that we can just threaten and cajole another leader because we have the world's largest military force. It didn't work in Iraq and they know it. Look at all the trouble we had there. We thought it would be a quick fight. Better to have waited and let the weapons inspectors to do their job as Saddam was caving on weapons inspections weeks before our invasion.

Are you really prepared to call for war in Egypt? Let diplomacy work. Let Egypt's new President have the time to calm his country's extremist elements. Let's see what he does befor labelling it a foreign policy failure. It may well turn out to be the best strategy we have used in many years. To have a functioning democracy in a Muslim country with significant religious minorities would be a major step forward for the middle East.

Its always nice when Obama channels Jimmy Carter when speaking on any subject. He did that with his criticism of Romney-did he think no one would notice?

It's also nice when his feckless foreign policy yields the expected result- and Obama makes things even worse by opening his mouth and saying whatever comes into his head. The State Department is now desperately trying to walk back his idiotic remarks about Egypt. Note to Obama- Egypt is still an ally. They're just not as strong an ally since you mucked up the situation with the food. I guess you had a tee time you couldn't miss.

It's particularly helpful when Obama reveals his priorities- to wit, skipping the intelligence briefing, (what else is new?), in favor of attending a fundraiser.

And to those who wonder why Mr. brilliant even needs to take these briefings: take a look at what's going on today in Egypt, Yemen, Tunisia, and Libya. That's the result of Obama's lack of interest, and wooden headed adherence to the wrong policies.

On the other hand, you look at limping GDP, horrendous unemployment, soaring debt, and billions of tax dollars handed to Obama cronies for companies that went bankrupt, and declare him a "success"- so I guess a brutally murdered Ambassador does not register as a failure to any of those remaining in the cult.

Second, Bin Laden wanted to destroy the entire United States Economy (check in Bush's box for that coming true too, also on Bush's watch).

Now how do you forget a guy like that? We haven't.

But somehow Republicans can't seem to remember the guy. Amnesia?

      Shady G --

Why would security at a US Embassy be so lax on the anniversary of 9/11 especially in LIBYA of all places?

Why is this administration not being asked that question?

Oh, I'm sure the question is being asked. But maybe it's because Libya, like Iraq, had nothing to do with September 11.

And maybe also because what warnings there were had nothing to do with Libya and had only to do with embassies in Cairo -- the US and the Israeli embassy -- and they were not specifically tied to September 11.

If idiots in the US put out a hateful video, is the government supposed to send out a million troops to every possible outpost in the world where an attack might occur just so that haters can hate "free"?

Who pays for that, do you suppose?

UP WITH THE SEVENTH PLANET FROM THE SUN!!!!

      Q22

In focusing on Romney you have missed a MAJOR GAFFE by Obama in calling Egypt "not an Ally and not an enemy" Of course Egypt has been a ally of us for decades and we have many mutual agreements in place. What the hell is Obama talking about ?

Naturally there is major back-peddling going on but the fact is that he is the President and this is a rookie error.

You missed the political genius in Obama's statement. Egypt is coming out from being under 30 years of US-backed tyranny under Mubarak. If he says Egypt is an enemy, he confirms us as a saber-rattling, war-mongering nation to the Egyptian people. If he says Egypt is an ally, he undercuts Morsi as being another US puppet and hurts his ability to quell this uprising. Obama did this pitch perfect, especially compared to the tone-deaf Romney/Ryan camp...

I have to say that even if I have not have time to post as much as I would like to, that I have never had so much fun reading my favorite Posters. Oops! I mean liberal Posters. Let me try again, extreme left liberals.

Many of us (non liberals) have tried to quote sources other than Fox, however today even the undesirablelefties are quoting FOX? Hay caramba, hay que tenerlos grande.

I thought to quote Fox was taboo. I do not know about all my friends out there, but I have never quoted from Fox, but I think is time we all do. Heck this folks quote from NBC, CBS, ABC, NYT and they do it very proudly and I think we should too.

Please no Wikipedia. My kids teachers do not allow them to quote from that source since anyone can update and write what they want.

Kids, remember that next week is the big surprise.

If it had been a Republican President we would likely have more than just the deaths we already have. Wasn't it the Republican Party that said we needed to put troops on the ground? How many troops are you willing to have killed? I'm sick of wars that do nothing but create enemies. Romney has already stated "in order for some to prosper others have to suffer," Who was he talking about suffering so his kids can live the lives of Billionaires? My son is and has been serving for 20+ years can he say the same? Even Royalty in England are/have served in their armed services, why should we settle for less?

Obama: "I don't think we would consider them an ally. But we don't consider them an enemy,"

State Department: So, forget about the President’s words. You’re saying that the Administration and the State Department still regard Egypt as a major non-NATO ally, and it is still a recipient of all the privileges that that entails? STATE DEPT. OFFICIAL: Yes.

Richard Engal: I just want to get your first reaction, before you give me a report, of the President saying Egypt was not an ally or an enemy. ENGEL: Yeah, I almost had to sit down when I heard that. For the last forty years, the United States has had two main allies in the Middle East — Saudi Arabia and Egypt, the other ally in the Middle East being Israel. For the President to come out and say, well, he’s not exactly sure if Egypt is an ally any more but it’s not an enemy, that is a significant change in the perspective of Washington toward this country, the biggest country in the Arab world. It makes one wonder, well, was it worth it? Was it worth supporting the Arab Spring, supporting the demonstrations here in Tahrir Square, when now in Tahrir Square there are clashes going on behind me right in front of the US embassy?

Confusion and incoherence from the Administration, but its Romney that's at fault. Talk about media bias. Can reporters make just the smallest attempt at objectivity?

If it's such a genius political move then why are they frantically back-tracking today? They are falling all over themselves to assure Egypt that they are, indeed, and ally. It's a gaffe. Quite a big one too but pissing off allies is the one thing Obama does a good job at.

So Flip-Flop Mitt is backtracking -- again. It seems like most every time he or Lyin Ryan say something, they have to backtrack, explain, spin and restate it the next day. Flip-Flop goes overseas and even manages to make the Brits angry, then has to backtrack. He's backtracking on what he said about Libya yesterday. He backtracks on what he said about Obama-care. Lyin Ryan backtracks about plant closing, about his votes to cut military spending --- the fool can't even be honest about his time in a marathon.

"These policies won’t make America stronger- they’re part of the same formula that crashed the economy and devastated the middle class in the first place. America can’t afford to go back," said Lis Smith, an Obama campaign spokeswoman, in response.

As opposed to staying stagnant for the next 4 years, meanwhile, we keep apologizing to the world for our freedom to do what we want as a people. Meanwhile, gas prices keep going up. Meanwhile, our credit score drops to AA and possibly A rating. Meanwhile, we keep spending more and more on healthcare and unemployment benefits for those who cannot work because the healthcare reform act causes a heavier burden on small companies.

I don't think Romney has the Golden Tongue that Clinton and Obama have. I think there are good things in the Healthcare Reform Act (pre-existing clause removal, no limits on healthcare costs, etc.). I believe that a woman should be able to choose to have an abortion under circumstances such as rape, molestation, or health issues up to a certain time in the pregnancy. I also don't think that foreign policy at this point is going to save our country, our domestic policies will.

Obama has proven that he would rather apologize, or not take sides (Egypt is neither our ally or our enemy) in any situation. What kind of chicken sh** answer is that....IT IS A POLITICAL ELECTION YEAR RESPONSE. Romney is not that bright when it comes to his timing and shooting froim the hip in this situation. I can tell you though, at least Romney WILL be the more likely canditate to fix the economy. Even the Democrats at the DNC stated on several occasions to be patient for another 4 years. I don't know about you, but I am tired of drinking that Koolaid.

If by Bushwhakers you mean George W. Bush then, I guess, you are right because he is the ONLY president since George W. Bush. Hardly a qualifier for the Nobel Prize. And while he may not have started a war he sure ramped up Afghanistan, including drone strikes of civilians. Not really a qualifier for the "Peace" prize. Timing and Administration response notwithstanding, is it just me, or do others wonder what Romney means when he says the statement from the Cairo embassy contradicts American values?

I have read it several times, but I don't see it.

What I see is that the Embassy worker was

              1) supporting free speech, while condemning the content of the film as being inflammatory (which is free speech in itself) and

              2) supporting and endorsing the American value of religious tolerance (and the separation of Church/Mosque and State).

How is any of that an attack on American values?

Of course, if you believe that the USA is or ought to be a Christian/Mormon theocracy/oligarchy that is insulted by the very existence of Islam, you might find the statements offensive. I do not.

And I don't want to send my son to war to support a Christian oligarchy.

Furthermore, as we have "discovered" to our chagrin (those of us who did not understand this in the first place), Islamic (or Christian, for that matter) fundamentalist thinking is not itself a nation state, and can not be subdued by military action.

So, where does that leave us? Diplomacy, as in "Speak Softly but Carry a Big Stick." As Obama says, "Justice WILL be served." But let's make sure that the justice we mete out lands on the right perpetrators. Otherwise, you have another boondoggle for Haliburton, that was Iraq. And too many young lives ruined or ended for nothing.

ROMNEY SET UP MICHELLE BACHMANN AS HIS SECRETARY OF DEFENSE TO HANDLE LIBYA.

Romney introduced Michelle Bachmann to reporters at the beginning of press meeting on Libya. The first reporter asked Michelle Bachmann , "Well Sen. Bachmann what kind of military intelligence do you have?"

Michelle replied, " I used to play Battleship all the time when I was a child!"

So Romney admits to the insane defense spending. And how exactly are we going to pay for this?

What was that? Oh, with MORE tax cuts.

So increase military spending and cut revenue with tax cuts. Gee, that plan sounds awfully familiar. Where have I seen this before?

How did that work out last time? Oh ya, unsustainable deficit and record debt. Awesome, let's do it again. *facepalm*

When you bring up that the DNC even says to be patient for 4 more years for the recovery, well it is actually now at least 8 years according to Romney. He is the one that said it would take at least 8 years to fix the economy if he is elected. Oh and by the way, we already know how Utah will vote, like they always do. I will be voting for Obama.

Do you know what is really stupid about this whole thing? Mitt Romney gave a small. ineffective terrorist group a global venue. If we had totally ignored this mess, they would have disapeared in one, maybe two days. Now that Romney has given them world-wide exposure (no matter how stupid the premise), they may never go away.

Good for you, Romney, you gave the terrorists exactly what they wanted - world wide attention!

But, why? Why was Romney sooo anxious to give terrorists exactly what they wanted? Especially when this might actually hurt America? Because he just doesn't care about anything but what benefits Romney! Because no matter how much it might hurt America, if it helps Romney, that's OK!

Yeppirs, that is exactly who I want as president! I'll be voting a straight Democratic ticket this fall!

RobMe and lyin’ Ryan who is now in cahoots with RobMe on defense spending after lipless voted on the defense cut previously – where the heck are these 2 Conmen going to get that money?!? Seriously people, we OWE China 3 THRILLION dollars! These Repuglicans are so stupid and MATH illiterate. They complain about the deficit, but yeah we are going to continue with the defense spending.
Barely any revenue coming in, and the teabag congress blocked the Jobs ACT are still doing NOTHING. And yes, it COSTS us struggling middle class to pay for the tax cut of the UBER wealthy in this country. Reason all should vote Democrat this November.

Shameless RobMe has the gall to think he can be POTUS and be admired throughout the world. Doesn’t he realize the world is laughing at him??! He has NO COMMON SENSE WHATSOEVER, and I am not alone to be embarrassed to have this total DETACHED plastic wacko be my leader.
                  So God forbid!

More importantly, the constant barrage of lies about Obama’s policies needs to be corrected at every moment. It’s like talking to a brick wall, but we should not let these vile accusations and lies proliferate. People need to know that the Greedy Obstructionist Party of NO, have been up in arms since day one to block, delay, filibuster EVERY bill and propositions by the Democrats to fix this economy. And to this day, they blame Obama for their treasonous and heinous actions – even when people WHO paid attention SAW IT. SHAME on Romney and Ryan and the whole RNC party.

We don’t need a new president especially when the replacement is extremely FAULTY.
We do need to replace the ReTHUGS in Congress. And women who vote for the lying duo are a
glutton for punishment. Think about it – it’s like marrying the guy your family warned you about!!

And yes, the zillionaires and their superhacs will be spending a lot to send out their radical teabags to precincts all over for voter suppression/intimidation. MORE REASON for Democrats/Liberals/Progressives to be strong and fight these zombies.

Seriously, I think the desperation is becoming apparent.

Notice how the comments on here against Obama are:

1.) About receiving the peace prize. Uhh.. Obama didn't give that to himself. Are you really blaming him for that?

2.) The downgrade to the AA rating. Which, btw, the very company that gave us downgrade explicitly stated that it was due to the impasse in Congress, primarily congressional Republicans.

3.) About his foreign policy record. Which, btw, is so good that the Democrats have been pumping and preening over it forever. Why? Because they're so completely confident in it.

Some of you Obama-haters on here have really hit the bottom of the barrel, haven't you? Your criticism aren't even making sense anymore.

Someone in the thread above pointed out that Romney has made this election about the choice between force and reason. I think that's right.

"Romney looked weak today," she said. "At one point, he had a certain slight grimace on his face when he was taking tough questions from the reporters, and I thought, 'He looks like Richard Nixon.'"

“I don't feel that Mr. Romney has been doing himself any favors, say in the past few hours, perhaps since last night,” Noonan told Fox News. “Sometimes when really bad things happen, when hot things happen, cool words or no words is the way to go.”

I'm old enough to remember watching tricky Dick on TV during Watergate.

The bizarre facial movement which RMoney (AKA chickenhawk non-Christian Robme) made during one recent appearance DID channel Nixon to a "T".

The expression is often an indicator of barely suppressed rage when being asked questions one doesn't want to answer.

Seen it lots of times -usually just before the perp gets charged.

a protester ripped a Romney sign in half and began shouting at Romney for politicizing the attacks in Libya. "I would offer a moment of silence but one gentleman doesn't want to be silent so were going to keep on going."

Feisty, please don't give any credit to Peggy Noonan, for "seeing the light". If she had any brains, she would have "seen the light" years ago.

Same goes for Joe Scarborough. He is only thinking of himself or Jeb Bush. He doesn't care about truth or integrity. Remember the swift boaters?

You can thank Scarborough for that. Yet he's still on tv. He's a liar. What he did to Sen. Kerry is unconscionable.

Media Matters: MSNBC host and former U.S. Representative Joe Scarborough (R-FL) devoted nearly half of the November 14 edition of MSNBC's Scarborough Country to lauding the achievements and rehashing the false claims of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (now Swift Vets and POWs for Truth). Media Matters for America documented the group's vicious smear campaign against Senator John Kerry throughout the presidential campaign.

The discussion featured four conservatives -- Scarborough, MSNBC political analyst and former Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, author and Wall Street Journal op-ed columnist John Fund, and Republican strategist http://www.lathropgage.com/people/bio.aspx?bioid=8451">Jack Burkman -- opposite a lone liberal, radio host Leslie Marshall. Scarborough, Buchanan, Fund, and Burkman heaped praise on Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and repeated the group's most frequently heard lies and distortions. Throughout the discussion, no one noted that official Navy records and other evidence contradict all of the accusations made by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth about Kerry's combat decorations, as MMFA documented here and elsewhere. MMFA has also documented the group's lies about Kerry's subsequent antiwar activity.

                            Lavish praise

                            • Scarborough's opening monologue lionized "these swift vets, who elitists so randomly passed off as lying right-wing cranks and Texas tools of the Bush attack machine" as "bona fide American heroes."
                            • Fund observed that Kerry "paid a very, very, very heavy price, because he underestimated what old soldiers are capable of doing if they're fighting in a cause that they believe in."
                            • Buchanan said: "These guys are A-authentic, genuine. They're not political phonies." Later, he added that "these swift boat ads were the most effective attack ads I have ever seen in my life. And one the reasons ... is, they are rooted first in truth."

Buchanan also congratulated Scarborough and himself for hyping Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in early August, before mainstream journalists had focused on them:

BUCHANAN: [Swift Boat Veterans for Truth] began not with millions of dollars, but a couple hundred thousand dollars and with us, you [Scarborough] and I and a few others, running these ads on our own show, arguing it, debating it, with Kerry sitting over there refusing to answer, as this thing percolated up from the bottom, all the way up to where the big media had to cover it.

Indeed, MMFA documented numerous instances of Scarborough and Buchanan echoing the group's demonstrably false charges or, in Scarborough's case, giving group members a forum for their lies and distortions about Kerry.

                            btw

Buchanan praised the Swift Boat Veterans' truthfulness: "They came out, 20 of them, signed sworn affidavits about what Kerry did and did not do. And, dramatically, they proved Kerry did not tell the truth when he said he was in Cambodia." However, the "affidavits" were never filed in court, so the documents have no legal significance. By contrast, all available military documentation contradicts the claims the veterans made in these affidavits about the combat incidents for which Kerry received his various military decorations, as MMFA explained. Frightening thought that someone this divorced from the finesse of foreign affairs wants charge of them.

Generally speaking I don't "speak" directly to other posters on the board. But, I'll make an exception in this case, because you have struck a "chord" with me, Pat.

I was a staunch supporter of Senator Kerry's candidacy in 2004, and I voted for him, just as I did for every other Democratic Presidential Candidate since 1976.

You are correct about the swift boaters, and the absolute hoax they perpetrated on the American People. Even John Kerry's first wife talked about the scars he carries with him, both emotionally and physicaly from his experiences in Vietnam.

What's more Pat Buchanan was a wealthy little draft dodger himself. The District of Columbia draft board exempted him from service in 1960 for "Reactive Arthritis." Just another in a long line of "can't"servatives who skulk away from military service as if it were the plague.

However, it was the Green Party, and the so-called Independents in this country who turned the 2000 election from Al Gore, and the 2004 election from John Kerry. THEY are the typical prime example of HYPOCRITES who so loudly criticize all-out conservatives, and then turn around and help one of them get elected to office.

In my mind THEY "cannot be trusted with either the truth or integrity" anymore than Obama can be trusted to tell the truth about the lies he told and the broken promises he made, in 2004.

THAT is why I will be voting for Mitt Romney this year, and I will not vote for another Democratic candidate until TRUE DEMOCRATS have the b@ll$, and the gall to wrest control of their party away from extremist liberal pea-brains who routinely jump ship and support someone like Ralph Nader, even it means someone like George Bush would become President.

In short, I didn't leave the party, the party left me. I won't be voting Democratic again until I get what I want.

So you're right, the swift boaters were bad.

But the "posers" currently running things for the democrats are, in my mind, much worse because of the damage they have done to the party, and thusly to our country.

                            DEMOCRATS FOR ROMNEY 2012!

ZMan - you are the only so called "Democrat for Romney" that I have ever heard of. Kind of lonely out there all by yourself? Take 2 tax breaks, 1 deregulation, and call us back in the morning(Bill Clinton, Democratic National Convention 2012). We never left you, but unlike you, we don't play the game one person's way or take the ball back home. We are all in this together and while i agree, nader was the spoiler in 2000 and 2004, people who flocked to him were never real Democrats to begin with and all the working/middle class Democratic families have know this for a long time. so support robme if you must, but don't claim to be something you are not - it is much easier to respect someone who is what they say they are and for the reasons they state.

....both reliable conventional-wisdom-peddlers and even some right-wing analysts said that Romney had made a serious mistake by distorting the timeline of the Egyptian embassy's response to the protests, and by making such a harsh political attack on the White House.

                            Pat, Boston - I disagree.

Even though the republican pundits will end up voting for Romney such as those you mentioned Noonan, Scarborough etc. they should be given credit when they get something right. Some Republicans have rightfully noted that Romney was not presidential and when given the chance to correct himself, doubled down on a false timeline and warped facts. Some of them understand that "politics stops at the waters edge". From the post above 3.17, even O'Reilly dressed down Romney's timing, tone etc.

They should be thanked for saying what is right this time.

I'm beginning to think that Romney isn't fit to be president of a home-owners association, much less president of the US. It seems like ever-time he opens his yap on day, he then has to restate, backtrack, spin and explain what he actually said the next day.

Zman am I and others here to surmise that you actually are hanging your hat on Romney because of broken promises by the Dems you mentioned?

Well, if you want to vote for a Romney certainly, by all means, but he's also a big, smelly, putrid lying sac of s**t that is nowhere near Dems half-truths you tell. Not lightyears.

One should not vote on promises (sizzle) that any candidate tries to sell. You gotta buy the steak (ideals) of what principals the party stands for.

For example, there are those that want to repeal Obamacare, and why, not because it actually helps those with pre-existing conditions, or young adults < 26 years old, etc., but because an elected black man with an apparent birther issue came up with it that the other party didn't have the gumption to enact.

So, if you want to flip-flop, like you know who, go ahead you are just a misguided soul, but I am not really too worried about it since there aren't too many like you out there. At least not enough to make a difference since there are those like the former Republicon pizza guy in Florida that gave POTUS a nice bear hug welcome.

People, like him, give me hope.

Just lots of words about anger and demanding respect, he'll set them straight. Just like his plans for economy, health care, and everything else there are no specifics. I can only conclude he has a secret plan. Just what is it he is going to do? One course would be for him will put on his magic underwear and cast a spell. This guy is running for president and all he does is talk in platitudes. He is full of what he will not do, but total vacuous on any specifics.

Would one of his minions explain what it is that he is going to do? I understand that facts are a problem for you Repubs, but try and provide some idea what it is that he is going to do.

                              @union baby tennessee and @starderup

Apparently you only read the polling information that tells you what you want to see & hear.

9% of those who voted for Obama in 2008 say they will not do so, this time around.

So, you may think I'm the only Democrat in the whole country who's going to vote for Mitt Romney (although, I don't think that even you two are stupid enough to believe that).

But, if you do, you're dead-@$$ wrong.

What's more, who, or what gives you the right to even intimate that someone who isn't voting your way, is not / was not a Democrat, or that they are paid poster?

LOL..........there are several Obama-Shama-Lama-Ding-Dong-Disciples (and one in particular) who are routinely the first ones to post everyday in "First Thoughts."

Who are they connected with, and how much do they get paid? Why don't you question them as being "posers?"

I never see you or anyone else accuse them of being disengenuous.

But then again, they agree with you, and that' all anyone is allowed to do, no? The rest of us "Blue Dogs" should fall of the face of the earth, and go straight to hell, right?

I have nothing to prove to the likes of either of you. I stayed true to the Democratic party for 36 years and was rewarded with a President who wants me to pay more in taxes than I already do (and I'm not in the 1%, either!), who wants to make it more difficult for my kid to get assistance for a college education, while other people's kids get free educations, who wants me to pay more for my health insurance so someone else who doesn't have a job, and/or may not not even be a legal occupant of this country can have it too. A President who apologizes to the islamic world for the US having defended itself after 9/11. A President who LIED when he said "the jobs are shovel ready" back in 2008. A president who said he was "different" and then pushed for billions of dollars worth of government guaranteed loans for his two largest campaign contributors.

Don't preach to me about representing yourself to be something you're not. Because it's clear to a good number of us that a large portion of Obama's support comes from people who simply want "free stuff" without having to work for it. I would respect them more if they would just come out and say that, instead of trying making it sound like they support him for the good of the country.

And lastly, the independent punks, and third party pukes (who'll bolt the party when an extremeist-leftist isn't running), the ones who kept Gore and Kerry out of the White House; are the same ones who put Obama in.

They are the reason we suffered for eight years under Bush, and they are the ones who've pushed the Democrat agenda so far to the left as to be close (too damned close) to socialism.

I want a center-left President aliken to Bill Clinton who'll listen and work with both sides of the political aisle for the good of The American People. We don't have that now, and we aren't going to get it from Barrack Obama.

                              He's already shown us that

That's why I support Mitt Romney

well i had to shut down the jobsite because of rain. and i would fire you for screwing off at work when i'm paying you to work. so you from your monicker must be a baby ? and some ones a parrot ? and cmon 3 job offers a week ? with that much work in detroit there shouldn't be any unemployment.

You shut down the jobsite for rain? It hasn't rained in a week. I'm calling BS. You are a jobsite foreman? I'm calling BS on that too. You are most likely the site gofer. I do contract and consulting work, and the IT field is booming in Michigan. 3 job offers a week. Like I said, get some skills.

Detroit, I've had that argument in the past about it complaining why we ask if he's unemployed .... it's too complicted for michigan to understand that he advertises it himself.

Why'll your stealing money from your boss playing on computer look at radar for traverse city. ok you were proved wrong there . but as far as your other comments i cant prove nothing but in your own statements you say business is booming why wouldnt i be working if i was a carpenter. But a little sissy desk jockey that does nothing but play office politics and crawl under the bosses desk i would not expext you to understand why i called it a day when it started raining at noon and sent the fellas home.

First off, I work from home. Consulting means I am my own boss. My employer wants results, and they get them from me. They don't care what I do between emergencies, just that I deliver. I don't get paid by the hour, I get paid by the results. Just because you only worked hourly jobs doesn't mean everyone does.

Secondly, just because you don't have the education to do what I do doesn't mean you have to be a hater. I did construction work, but since I was capable of more I did so. Besides, I wasn't comfortable being around all those drug heads and convicts (Don't try to deny that either, then I know you are a liar).

Third, if you want more job opportunities you have to go where they are. It must suck to be dependant on contruction in an area that only has a few months where you can do it. It may be raining in Traverse City, but that's not where I am. It may be where you are, but since you didn't say where you were I had to assume you were in southeast Michigan where most of the population is. I'm pretty sure you know that weather isn't the same everywhere at the same time.

and finally, if you really do work contsruction you have suckled at the teat of unemployment more than once in your life. Save your faux outrage for December when you will be collecting those entitlements that you blame for dragging down our system.

4.11 But a little sissy desk jockey

4.4 but typical liberal response just call some one names if you have nothing intelligent to say.

                              Bon Appetit, hypocrite.

Unemployed, maybe you should look out your window, it's not raining now. It wasn't a downpour, and it has been not raining most of the day so why did you REALLY send everyone home?

                              Yep, "fake world". Thats it.

No need to be a hater, bro. Just because your life didn't turn out the way you planned doesn't mean you have to hate other people. You denied druggie but not convict. I said either, and you chose. I also didn't say "two months", I said "a few". If I had meant 2, I would have said 2. And yes, I do know about construction, I worked construction jobs for 3 years after I got out of the Air Force. I worked carpentry, concrete, bricklaying, and roofing at various times. I do believe you're carpenter, probably a finish carpenter because those a-holes think they know everything but are as ignorant as a slug.

You go bid on your "jobs" (wink, wink). I wonder if that's the reason you'll give your P.O. that you were in that part of town. Don't worry about supporting me, I'll be the one giving you the means to buy food and lottery tickets in January.

Presidents don't thave the luxury of softening their rhetoric after a crisis. President Obama has proved himself to be cool, calm and collected during what must be a personal nightmare for him. Imagine if your employees were killed at their jobs. Romney has contributed nothing to helping during this crisis.

Republicans, forget this election; yours is a lost cause.

Reagan was the last guy that seemed to have made sense and resonated with folks on both sides.

You can never win an election in the 21st century by alienating folks; gone are the days you could do that with impunity and still win elections.

Agree with me or not, the 21st century voter is a more informed critter, less hardliners...

Picture this- President Obama and Mitt Romney in their first debate. The commentator asks questions about pretty much any major issue and everyone looks at Romney to see what positon he will take. Lets talk about foreign affairs, for Mitt not a good topic, balance the budget, not so good for Mitt when he wants to give a tax cut for the wealthy and increase spending for the millitary. When asked about creating jobs and it comes out that the jobs created was manufacturing jobs oversea's and his Health Plan created the most employment which was 3,200 health jobs. How about abortion, Mitt takes what positon? Lets talk coal- Mitt takes what position, he swithched in Mass- as governor to gas because of polution and didn't want his neighbors to breathe bad air. Gun control- Mitt voted for assult weapons ban, brady bill and was never a real hunter. There has just got to be something he would be confortable with talking about? Wait a minute- Medicare------no he would have to say he is going to vouchers. How about Social Security--------No he would have to say he wants to privitize it. Like lets put in the stock market, and we know how that works. This is going to be one great debate.

Personal nightmare for him? So, he gave up an hour before departing to vegas for his fund raising trip? Yeah, seems really broken up.

"Romney has contributed nothing to helping during this crisis." To you I think the only thing you feel would be helping would be to lay down before the executioner. When you are seen as weak, you are targeted. bullies on the playground don't go after the kid they know will kick their tail, but the timid, bow to the world type. CarterII, playing now. Wish to pay again? I don't.

You can't seriously fall for the "hope and change" nonsense again. Can you?

"I have a plan to fix things" why haven't you instituted it yet? Why didn't you put The Great Plan into work 3 1/2 years ago, instead of pushing health care to the n-th degree, while you had House, Senate?

When the boat is sinking, and the captain wants to ram the iceberg again, its time to get off the ship, or drink more kook-aid.

I am remembering the previous 2 elections 2004 was very neck/neck Bush wasn't doing a great job, but Gore lost when the Dem party was split up and that wasn't a good thing. 2008 same thing except the tea party really mucked things up for the GOP (along with their sitting Pres throwing us all down a giant hole). I respected John McCain, but when he picked Ms. Palin as his running mate, he lost the race. Both Mr. McCain, Candidate Obama and Mr. Gore never disrespectful the sitting President like Mr. Romney has been. Mr. Romney has been traveling the world, giving press conferences like he IS the President (and sounding very GWB about going in and taking care of who did this and being a bit embarrassing when meeting these potential peers). As he stated it is hard to beat an incumbent, but when you had a chance to be an American and you used it as an opportunity, that is not what I want in a President. I want someone who cares. It's taken a good 4 years to START taking care of problems and repairing our reputation in the world. It would be sad to see this undone. I'm sure Mr. Romney is successful but there are still way too many things we don't know about him. Also, he talks about Obamas broken promises...well anyone who runs for office makes promises. Sometimes they are kept, but most times they are broken.

You should try getting the facts. Just because Twitt Mitt says it doesn't mean it's so. The President has never apologized for America. That's just more of Mitt's daily propaganda that he knows his base will swallow - hook, line, & sinker. And it's his apology crap that has him in trouble today.

Just like when Pharaoh Mitt pulled out the white board and wrote that nonsense. Then he turned to the cameras with his "So it be written, let it be done" crap.

Hows the race going in Virginia? When Romney loses there AND loses the election will you claim it was because Democratic votes were "over-counted"?

Ben - that says everything about you and your irrational hatred. Even those of us who disliked Bush knew he was President of the United States. The fact that you seem to have your values up your a** says it all about you - and none of it is good!

Bob - do you think Fox actually called very many Democrats? If so, do you think they called them on purpose? I have not see anyone elses poll but the one from Fox today. and that is not the results that Romney/Ryan/Republican National committee or the Fox network was hoping for.

Defeat from the jaws of victory continued...

Romney should let his surrogates carry on this subplot, but to keep it in the spotlight with the candidate as "point man", is political quicksand.

If you aren't going to win the election on foreign policy, how much time should you devote to it on the campaign trail? The Republican candidate and his team are not exactly running a "textbook" campaign.

James Carville is STILL correct, and any candidate who loses focus on that singular topic, often loses their election...

Agree. He got his cheap political shot he should move on keep his mouth shut. If Romney continues to bring up the nonexistant apology and keep up the drum beating, reporters will start to ask questions.

____Hypothetical interview if Romney ever strays from Fox_______

Reporter - How can you believe that the Cairo statement was an apology for the attacks when looking at the timeline it came out before the attacks happened, meant to tamp down the release of a anti muslim film?

Romney - Uh, Well...I know, I know that I agree in free speech and we should proudly defend hateful speech meant to inflame passions in volitile areas of the world. We should not try to minimize one preacher's obscure movie, rather we should promote it as our national policy view.

Reporter - The timing and tone of your comments aside, what would you be doing that Obama is failing to do in his foreign policy? More specifically what should he be doing about Libya?

Romney - Well, (akward chuckle/smile), I would not be hanging up the phone on Israel and stopping our relationship. In addition, this president has shown an overtly apologetic and meek submissive role to the world. Especially the muslim world, one he is quite familar with and takes his ques from, I might add.

Reporter - I'm sorry Governor, the latest reports are that the White House and the PM have been in contact and there is no breakdown in relations. People might even say that the President has been backing Israel and keeping foreign policy statements similar to previous presidents. In fact some on the left and right would note that Obama has had quite a strong, interventionist policy.

Specifically what is he doing wrong overall and what are your suggestions for Libya?

Romney - Well. Overall (shakes head). Obama is doing everything, uh wrong. In Libya, specifically, I for one would not appologize for our freedoms. I would stand strong and respect our flag and soldiers. (Gesticulates nervously with hands). I would do better.

Reporter - I'm sorry but you are not answering my questions.

                                      _____

Seriously though, if Romney keeps this up he will be asked questions like this in the debates and he can't give his normal beauty pageant style answers (repeating the questions) and not providing specifics.

Of course, you were there, so you know exactly what went down, right? Do you mind if we go with the Associated Press' version instead?

"Dr. Ziad Abu Zeid, who treated Stevens, told The Associated Press that he died of asphyxiation, apparently from smoke. In a sign of the chaos, Stevens was brought by Libyans to the Benghazi Medical Center with no other Americans, and no one at the facility knew who he was, Abu Zeid said.

He said he tried to revive Stevens for about 90 minutes ‘‘with no success.’’ The ambassador was bleeding in his stomach because of the asphyxiation but had no other injuries, the doctor said."

Let's not lose sight of this among other recent Romneyisims

From The Christian Science Monitor yesterday:

“Putin: I'm 'grateful' to Romney for proving me right about missile defense

Putin said yesterday that Romney's latest comments about Russia as the US's 'geopolitical foe' validate the Kremlin's resistance to American plans for a missile defense system in Europe.

                                      MOSCOW

President Vladimir Putin has lashed back at Mitt Romney's repetitious portrayal of Russia as the US's "geopolitical foe," saying he's grateful to the Republican contender for making it clear that Moscow would be unwise to trust any future verbal commitments made by any US leader.”

Romney must think his idiotic blustering utterances are not being watched all over the world. Don't give this selfish opportunist the keys to anything.

                                      @Wrongo,

Obama did not agree not to put a missile defense in Europe. That is a lie. Period.

The missile shield in Europe will probably not happen for two reasons:

                                      1) There is a growing backlash against putting them in Europe. Why would Iran be attacking Europe? Why would we be defending Europe against Iran? Why are we not putting a missile defense system in place in this country first? What idiot thought that putting a missile defense aimed at the re-entry phase of a missle instead of the infinitely easier boost phase? A missile shield in Europe is not something American taxpayers want to pay for. It was a bad idea left over from the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld idiocy.

                                      2) The Pentagon has done study after study and they have all had the same results. Any missile defense that intends to kill missiles in the re-entry phase is unlikely to work more than 5% of the time. (The last time we tried to use such a defense was against Sadaam's SCUD missiles. In Israel and Saudi Arabia/Yemen, the Patriot missile defenses failed to hit even a single SCUD. There was a lot of self-congratulations at the timne, but analysis of the radar tapes showed that the Patriots missed every time. The Pentagon says that it is about 400 times as hard to hit a missile in the re-entry phase as in the boost phase. And a re-entry missile defense shield would be extremely easily bypassed by simply overwhelming it with numbers of missiles, numbers of warheads, or decoys.

But the GOP wants to build a many billion dollar missile system in Europe knowing it won't work and that the Pentagon does not want it. But they will pay for it by cutting Pell Grants.

We make laser guided bombs that free fall to targets and are extremely effective and accurate and you want everyone to believe that missiles especially, surface-to-air, aren't guided the same way and not effective?

I served in Dessert Storm. Two events occurred near Khobar towers. One wasn't successful and one was, however, there were theatre-wide successes of the Patriot system, to your chagrin.

I am not a Republicon, but your information isn't correct, and the Pentagon will not shy money away, whether it is a missile defense system, or a stealth bomber, to satisfy the blood lust budget.

                                      bahrrt.....

The Patriot system is effective against single warhead missiles, like the Scud, however nuclear warheads are generally multiple independant re-entry vehicles (MIRV'd), making use of a single booster to place multiple warheads into orbit from which the can re-enter and engage multiple targets.

Thus, I'm not sure an ABM system would not be overloaded by the sheer number of MIRV'd nuclear weapons re-entering the atmosphere.

My understanding is the Eastern European missile shield is to defend against nuclear attack, and it is logical to assume that eventually the Iranians would MIRV their missiles, which would make the missile shield obsolete.

Besides, Jamal can still load a nuke into the trunk of his Toyota and drive right past the missile shield on his way to Paris before meeting Allah in a spectacular show of devotion.

Thurm. So he's an idiot. Or he's threatening the world with another waste of American lives, time, money, and energy. Like I said, an idiot.

Oh where oh where did our Republican party go? It can't be called a party anymore....it's more like a wake. It's been hijacked by the Kock brothers, Ralph Reed and the christian coalition, Grover, Rush (wow, what an idiot) and the 1%. They've yanked the political scale so far to the right, that the left is now in the center. We need the center. It used to come from compromise but now can only come from the Democrats.

And the Romney Shark-Jumping Tour continues on. If Romney was correct in the first place, why would he feel a need to put a "softer" edge on his criticism? If he was right, shouldn't he be stepping up his criticism?

Typical R/R campaign tactic - lie and /or say something outrageous then walk it back within 24 hours. Their behavior is juvenile and unbalanced, and very disrespectful. R/R should not be running the country.

Okay Mitt, you want a strong military. But at what cost? Given that you think the govt. spends too much, how are you gonna finance increased military spending? You're not gonna raise revenue, so where are the cuts going to come from?

There won't be a cost to the increased military spending, it will be kept "off budget".

Therefore it doesn't count as debt.

Hey CPO you are right there. I suggest we seize Romney's assets and start the funding there, then on to the jokes who work on Wall Street...Maybe Eric Holder could talk to those Swiss bankers and seize hidden assets from the accounts American super rich have sequestered there...Next stop, Cayman Islands. We keep this up there won't be anymore national debt.

It is very clear that Mr. Romney is not ready for the complexities of US foreign policy.
Worse, it appears that Mr. Romney's ill-conceived and aggressive stance re events in Libya was in response to right wing goading by the likes of Laura Ingraham and Rush Limbaugh.
Do we honestly want our nation's foreign policy dictated by radio talk hosts?
This week, Mr. Romney effectively disqualified himself from the office of the presidency.

Mitt needs the right-wing media to act as his spine, since he clearly lacks one.

Remember, if you're on the right, there's still time to throw support behind Gary Johnson. Maybe in 2016 they'll actually elect a principled Conservative instead of an "electable" gutless wonder like Mitt.

Hey ZMan2012, you need to wake up and smell the flipping coffee. I'm saying flipping, because I'm not allowed to say what I really want to say to you. Your guy flip flops more than a fish out of water. On a day when your moron of a candidate agreed with President Obama that 9-11 not be about politics, the buffoon that you like so much, made it about politics. Classy really Classy. Also, you bozo, after giving remarks yesterday about what took place in Libya, your guy walked away from the podium with a smile as wide as the Mississippi River on his face. Again, classy real classy. So tell me, kind of foreign policy experience does your candidate have? Oh wait I know. He went to the Middle East and insulted them. Then he went to London before the Olympics and told London, that they weren't ready for the Olympic Games. That's his foreign policy experience. You guys have no clue what you are getting yourselves into by voting for this moron. He is completely unqualified for the job. He has no idea how to run a country and his own party YOUR PARTY!! is even backing away from him after the remarks he made yesterday and the face that he made. You can't run the country like you run a business. Keep supporting him and like all the other people of the companies that he closed while working bain captial, and you will find yourself on the unemployment line as well. You need to wake up and do some research on what it takes to be a president. I could accept your opinions about President Obama if I thought they some accuracy to them. You people are crazy. You need to go to sleep and start taking your medication, because clearly you haven't been. If you want to vote for president, at least vote for someone that at least can do the job. The only good thing Willard Mitt Romeny is qualified for is putting people out of work. He keeps saying that he will create jobs, yet he has given no clue as to how he plans on doing that. If he gets elected LORD HELP US!!!!!!!, you guys get exactly what you have coming to you. The only problem with that is that bozo is going to take the rest of us down with him. Vote your conceince. you will be out of a job before you know.

You loud mouth war mongers are the weak ones because, more than likely, you'll be the last ones doing any real fighting... you or your children. The strong ones are the ones that hold their mouths and rationally think through to the best solution.... something lyin' Ryan/Romney have PROVEN THEY CAN NOT DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Romney averages 11.5 million bucks a year. I'm retired and I averaged 32,000 a year. It would take me working for 3,598 years to make what he does in one, doing nothing but telling other people what to do or NOTHING AT ALL. How in God's name can any of you think he could have the remotest ability to understand your plight? He and Ann did not live in a basement apartment eating off an ironing board or using a desk to study on. I'm sure he did good things in his church, he had to, it was a "rule". He has no conception of economics, foreign affairs, the poor, sick or huddled masses. He attitude is that of an entitled meanie (remember the 'haircut' and blind professor and ask you're parents for a loan and call 211 to the woman in New Orleans that had just told him 'she lost everything') who believes it is his turn to win. I just can't stand the smirk on his face, or the way he tilts his head expecting everyone to applaud til their hands bleed. He is an empty suit with a cold heart and a soul for sale to the highest bidder. He is the symbol of the GOP--Gathering Of Puppets-- with Adelson, the Koch brothers and Grover pulling the strings making them all perform their weird dance.

So TAJ, do you want a President that makes less than you do? Would that make you feel better? Candidates that are incapable of achieving personal success, will be even less capable of achieving national success.

Why do we have to pay a multi millionaire any money at all for being our President? Being our President if called on is privilege, something no one for that matter should require money to do. He/She has every thing they need at the White House.

Confussed - you are a bit confused. The First Family pays for their own food, clothes, vacations, etc. We don't provide those things for them.

Kannin TAJ never implied that POTUS needs to make less than him. Someone who attains his personal success by raiding companies and destroying lives are not the kind to hold office of POTUS.

No, national success will not be Willard's to attain, sorry.

You hit it right on the head, TAJ. That 10% Ann Romney boasted about giving to charity all goes directly to the Church of the Latter Day Saints (more commonly known as Mormons. It is a "tithe," not a donation. If Ann was correctly stating their charitable giving, the church is the only "charity" they give to.

Kannin, ever the fool, you would best be served by shutting your face. Instead you insist on making sure that everyone knows you are an idiot. Romneys personal success was that of vulture in chief who killed companies for profit. He is the lowest among the low. Add to that the fact that he states corporations are people, then I stand and accuse him of murder, about 100,000 counts of murder, makes him a serial killer, a looney dog that needs to the humanely euthanized.

And that is supposed to be Obama's fault? So now we are blaming 9/11 on the neo cons? Can you say 'hypocrite'? Loser!

Tony, as usual with a total lack of brain. This attack on "Obama's watch" happened in another country, while 9/11 under King Bush's watch happened in the U.S.A.

I know this may come as a shock to you, but Lybia is NOT in the U.S.A. Sorry to burst your bubble.
