Romney: A stumble

“Mitt Romney on Wednesday strongly criticized President Obama’s response to attacks on Americans in the Middle East, prompting both Republicans and Democrats to warn Romney against seeking political points over a crisis involving the death of US citizens abroad,” the Boston Globe writes. “Romney alleged that Obama was sympathizing with the attackers because of a statement that the US Embassy in Cairo issued condemning an online video offensive to Muslims as an example of religious intolerance. Romney said Wednesday the statement was issued after the attack in Cairo, as a response to it. But it was actually issued before the attack, specifically in response to growing anger in Egypt over the offensive video.”

The AP: “Mitt Romney is a Republican standard-bearer largely standing alone in his rush to criticize President Barack Obama after violent attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya. Romney’s quick swing at Obama — as the crisis was unfolding in the Middle East and North Africa — was glaringly at odds with the more statesmanlike responses Wednesday from GOP leaders in Congress to the killing of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others Americans in Benghazi and to the U.S. Embassy breach in Cairo.”

In a separate story, the AP says Romney “seriously mischaracterized” what happened.

The New York Times editorial page says Romney “showed an extraordinary lack of presidential character.”

The Washington Post editorial page called Romney’s response “a discredit to his campaign.” And it points out: “Romney claimed that the administration had delivered ‘an apology for America’s values.’ In fact, it had done no such thing: Religious tolerance, as much as freedom of speech, is a core American value.” And about the video: “it was striking that Mr. Romney had nothing to say about such hatred directed at a major religious faith.”

The New York Times: “The deadly attack on an American diplomatic post in Libya propelled foreign policy to the forefront of an otherwise inward-looking presidential campaign and presented an unexpected test not only to the incumbent, who must manage an international crisis, but also to the challenger, whose response quickly came under fire. … Romney came under withering criticism for distorting the chain of events overseas and appearing to seek political advantage from an attack that claimed American lives.”

The New York Daily News’ DeFrank: “Mitt Romney’s reaction to the U.S. diplomatic murders is a fresh reminder why some senior GOP officials are worried over how he’ll fare in next month’s foreign policy debate. Romney has just learned the hard way that dabbling in what Henry Kissinger termed the forbidden fruit of foreign policy is a lot like gambling — the odds generally favor the house.”

More: “In his zeal to capitalize on the Cairo demonstrations, Romney overreached, then got overtaken by tragic events in Benghazi, Libya. That forced him, in effect, to double down with a Wednesday press conference where he looked ill at ease, defensive, opportunistic and — even some of his most ardent GOP boosters privately conceded — unpresidential.”

USA Today: “A presidential campaign that's been all about the economy shifted suddenly to foreign policy Wednesday following the murderous attack on U.S. diplomats in Libya, giving President Obama an advantage over a challenger who has yet to start receiving national security briefings. … While Obama was condemning the attacks, vowing justice against the perpetrators and consoling the victims' families and State Department colleagues, Romney doubled down on a statement he initially released Tuesday night accusing the administration of sympathizing with the attackers.”

Major Garrett: “Mitt Romney has picked a big fight fraught with political risks amid an ongoing foreign-policy crisis with heartbreaking and murderous consequences for the U.S. diplomatic corps. And by the end of the day on Wednesday, he walked straight into a forearm shiver from the commander-in-chief—one that may leave a mark and intensify scrutiny of Romney’s foreign-policy qualifications.”

Not sure this was just a stumble as it was a complete fall over the neocon cliff.

Bad day for Romney. Making a false statement based on a bad timeline, then making it much worse by trying to lie his way out of it yesterday morning. As Bugs Bunny would say "What a Maroon". It is a shade of red and seems to perfectly fit his aim to turn blue and gray states to a shade of red.

Romney's reaction to the Cairo US Embassy's 'apology' assuming the US Embassy is in step with the United States is reasonable. Why did the Cairo US Embassy 'apologise' about a US film anyway?

Today the story is that the violence is not about a film, it's jihad and has been planned for some time and is same old same old 911 stuff.

Another big distraction from Obama's failures. Has Obama taken a singel question from the white house press corps about this?

I mean the filtered NBC, ABC one on one interviews are on thing but were is the President on this attack? Why is he afraid to answer any questions???

Just as Romney dismisses 47% of the population as lazy moochers dependent upon the government for handouts, comments from posters such as 'spider' and 'right is' should be dismissed, coming as they are from deluded ignorance that will believe any lie that is critical of President Obama, and ignore any truth that does not fit their prejudiced point of view. These are people who don't hear anything but gossip, don't read anything but rumor, and don't place any value on intelligence.

for some reason i'm reminded of an old Looney Toons skit between Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam. Bugs uses the old Teddy Rooseveldt line, "I may speak softly, but i carry a big stick." Sam counters with "Well i speak LOUD, and i carry a BIIIIIGGGGGER stick."

You know, we should really allow people to come forward and say, "I made a mistake and i apologize" instead of them feeling that they have to double down on stupidity in order to appear infallible.

It is Romney's own rightwingers that will not allow him to apologize on foreign policy. They dictated his initial response and they determined that he could not back away from his statement. He has chosen his path - going with the line - Obama apologizes and doesn't stick up for American values or the Constitution has been shown to have traction - regardless of it's untruth.

Frankly that shows Romney's lack of character, that he is willing to boost a lie,if it will get him votes.

Romney has three problems with his inane and misleading statement regarding this issue. The first is that he seems to consider religious intolerance and bigotry to be an American "value" that he was defending with his criticism of the embassy's press release. His second is that he sees an apology from the President in there somehow. The third is that when we should have been concentrating on what the death of our diplomats means to our nation, he was taking cheap political pot shots.

I think I'll add a fourth - he's being led around by the nose by the likes of John Bolton, and probably some other Bush-era neo-cons that cost us billions of dollars and thousands of lives for a useless war in Iraq that these dolts still have the nerve to defend.

Romney's worse than the empty suit I've accused him of being. He's downright dangerous.

Besides London and Israel here is another example of how poorly Romney handles foreign affairs. We had cowboy diplomacy and shoot from the hip with Dubya and look where it got us. Let's not go there again.

The Middle East and parts of North Africa are volitile right now and the slightest thing can set off riots or worse. Once those new governmnents can get control of their people such things aren't likely to happen.

They firmly believe that "engineering" wars create money, jobs and opportunity which hasn't done anything but line the pockets of those that are in the "war" industry.

I am starting to wonder if Romney just recently started lying or if this may have been a behavior that he used successfully in his business career. I know that tricking customers is a successful business strategy for some businesses, especially in the short run.

Obama has been very successful in improving our relations around the world. He is excellent at calming tensions and beginning discussions where tensions exist. We are trying to show the world we are no longer the world's bully. We lead by example.

The Cold war is over. The world should be allowed to peacefully coesist without being forced to pick sides.

WW I started because of rival alliances formed among European counties. It was triggered by the assassination of one Austrian leader by a small group of Serbian assassins. Many died as the result of a few people's actions. WWII started as a direct consequence of the unresolved grievances of WWI. The west made the Soviet Union our enemy in the aftermath of WWI by funding and arming the white army in the civil war in Russia after WWI,

Joseph: You make at least two statements that are capable of empirical proof (or disproof): (1) That the world knows Obama is incompetent, and (2) that America has lost the world's respect. I happen to think you're dead wrong on both of them, and I'm calling you out. Show some proof.

You see, just because you say something doesn't make it true. In fact, you make it sound very much to me like you're just repeating something you heard someone else say or write, and it made you feel better about yourself in some strange way.

I'll give you two countervailing pieces of proof, from recent history alone. First, in Libya. The United States is widely popular there, because of our role in aiding their revolution. A role I would point out, that cost no American lives, and yet was roundly criticized on the right. I happen to think it was brilliant foreign policy.

Second, in Egypt, Obama's "not an enemy nor an ally" comment -- which also has been roundly criticized on the right -- had instantaneous positive effects in terms of the behavior of the Egyptian government. Again, I happen to think it was brilliant foreign policy. For the price of a few words, and no dollars or lives, it stabilized the situation in Cairo to our benefit.

I happen to think that this week cemented the election for Obama, and thank God for that, America. Although, judging by the sheer desperation evident in Romney's remarks about Cairo, it appears that Romney believes the election was lost even earlier than that.

So, anyway, I'm looking forward to your proof of the truth of your assertions.

        Jonyred,

If you were given less than 20% chance of winning, you'd be desperate too. Oh wait... that's right, you live in an alternate reality where the campaign with the 80% chance of winning is the desperate one.

It seems to me that the need to fervently try to score political points with half baked ideas (shooting first and aiming later) and then doubling down on the thoroughly debunked criticism, reeks of desperation.

The leader of the free world must be someone with the ability to make calm, measured foreign policy decisions, not someone who'll spout off anything he thinks will move his particular agenda forward.

While it is unlikely a true believer such as yourself will be swayed by comments like mine, it is my sincere hope that all rational Americans can see the stark differences between our President and the GOP's cartoonish excuse for a candidate.

          Why Mitt Romney is Unlikable!

A lot is being said in the media about Mitt Romney not being "likable", or that he doesn't "relate well" to people.

Frankly, I struggled to understand why. So after much research, I have founded this Top Ten List to explain exactly WHY Mitt Romney is not a likeable person:

Top Ten Reasons To Dislike Mitt Romney:

          1. Mitt's drop-dead, collar-ad handsome with a gracious, statesmanlike aura. Looks like every central casting's #1 choice for Commander-in-Chief.

          2. Mitt's been married to ONE woman his entire life, and has been faithful to her, including through her bouts with breast cancer and MS.

          3. Mitt has no scandals or skeletons in his closet. (How unpolitical and boring is that?)

          4. Mitt doesn't speak in a fake, southern, "preacher-like voice" when talking to us.

          5. Mitt is highly intelligent. Graduated cum laude from both Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School, and by the way, Mitt's academic records are NOT sealed.

          6. Mitt doesn't smoke or drink alcohol, and has never done drugs, not even in the counter-culture age when he went to college. Too square for today's America?

          7. Mitt represents American values of "yesterday", where people believed in God, went to Church, didn't screw around on their spouses, worked hard, and became a SUCCESS!

          8. Mitt has a family of five great sons....and none of them have police records or are in drug rehab. But of course, they were raised by a stay-at-home mom, and that "choice" deserves America's scorn.

          9. Oh yes.....Mitt's a MORMON. We need to be very afraid of that very strange religion that teaches its members to be clean-living, patriotic, fiscally conservative, charitable, self-reliant, and honest.

          10. And one more point.....pundits say because of his wealth, Mitt can't relate to ordinary Americans. I guess that's because he made that money HIMSELF.....as opposed to getting it from the taxpayers.

Apparently, Mitt didn't understand that working hard at a job and earning your own money and success in America, makes you an unreliable and unlikeable American.

My goodness, it's a strange, strange world today in America, being so liberal in our ways, isn't it?

Your vote matters. Make sure you cast your vote for the right reason, and not for the wrong perception. All successful Americans, like Mitt Romnery, are not bad people!

I was reading your entry with great interest then I got to point #9 and I mistakenly read it the first time as.. "Oh yes.. Mitt's a MORON.

His religion shouldn't be a problem with anyone. But the fact that in some areas he is a MORON should.

The real reason Willard's unlikable Grizzly Adams is, nobody likes a liar plain and simple. All the points you listed may or may not be true, but lying really puts people off. If he is the perfect man your try to portray him to be, then why can't he take a position on an issue any issue, and stick by it instead of trying to take all sides on all issues. See Grizzly just because he's got you fooled doesn't mean the rest of us fall for his many positions on every issue.

Well Mo you seem to like Obama just fine. I mean he has even been called a liar to his face on the house floor.

The real reason you don't like Romney is you can not admit that you were wrong to support Obama and your to proud to admit that he is a failure.

            #16.3 - Thu Sep 13, 2012 1:48 PM EDT

Dev. Just because Obama was called a liar on the House floor doesn't make it so. In case you hadn't noticed - there are a lot or "crazy" people in the house. Most of us looking from the outside find it amazing that anything gets done there. Do you suppose that it might be why they have such a very low approval rating?

Here's 10 you might want to consider. Show me, please, where I'm wrong.

            1. Mitt can't conceal the fact that he likes himself way too much.

            2. Mitt's obvious pandering for votes -- a habit he's had for many years now -- is so extreme it's actually kind of creepy.

            3. Mitt exudes an aura of "I'm better than you."

            4. Mitt exudes an aura of "I think you're stupid enough to believe the next thing to come out of my mouth."

            5. Mitt couldn't say "I'm hiding something in my tax returns from you" any more clearly if he actually just said "I'm hiding something in my tax returns from you."

            6. No one can tell what Mitt actually believes in. It leaves the impression that he doesn't actually have any guiding political principles. This circles back to #2.

            7. Mitt just smells like "I want to be President so bad."

            8. Car elevators.

            9. Mitt just can't stop himself from saying really stupid things that roughly translate in English to "look how much money I have."

            10. Mitt has never shown a trace of genuine human emotion.

            1) Has Romney referred to himself as "eye candy"? Has Obama? You really shouldn't say Romney likes himself too much when Obama is calling himself eye candy.

            2) Romney wasn't hiding anything in his tax records, dumbass. I keep hearing he paid 14% on his taxes. He paid 14% from the investment returns which was ALREADY TAXED money. He had to have money to invest right? You don't think he paid taxes on that money before he invested it? He actually did & it was probably at a higher tax rate than you paid. So why should he be taxed at a higher rate for the money he already paid taxes on? They don't explain THAT in the headlines.

            3) The rest of your "points" are too stupid to even comment on.

If you actually believe what msnbc, nbc, abc, cbs say, instead of checking their "facts", you would see that THEY ARE LYING TO YOU BECAUSE THEY ARE OBAMA SUPPORTERS. Of course they're going to paint Obama in a pretty picture & run Romney in the ground. Do they ask Obama difficult questions that the US people DESERVE to know? Nope, they don't even confront him when he makes a mistake. It is just quietly swept under the rug. My point is made VERY CLEAR just by looking at their websites. How often is Romney ran down? How about Obama? When Romney makes a statement that is only half published to make him look bad, shouldn't the news stations be held accountable for misleading the public? Did you hear Romney's 47% video in it's entirety? I'm willing to bet many did not. If you didn't then you should. His statement was taken completely out of context. How many times do you see Obama in a negative light on these "news stations"? Not nearly as many times as Romney. Ever wonder why?? It isn't because Romney is that horrible... It's because of the main stream media & who THEY want to win. This is just another one of their BIASED "stories".

Webster’s Dictionary defines a sociopath as: “someone who behaves in
a dangerous or violent way towards other people and does not feel guilty about
such behavior.” In everyday usage it can be used to mean someone who has no
conscience; someone who only cares about what benefits himself or herself with
no regard for the suffering or loss of others
              .

When most people tell a lie, they have “tells.” They may look away, give too
much or too little detail, have increased heart rate and many other indicators.
They feel a sense of guilt for lying and it shows. For a sociopath, lying comes
naturally and without that pesky conscience, they can be very convincing. Their
only concern is getting what they want.

The most famous sociopath from recent history is probably, serial killer,
Ted Bundy. He was intelligent, charming and handsome: a deadly combination for
a sociopath. He was able to charm young women into trusting him even during a
time when women should have been even more aware of ‘stranger danger” than they
normally are. His sociopathy served him well. He could lie convincingly and his
charm and handsomeness only made him more attractive.

There are several jobs that are perfect for the sociopath, such as being a
hit man. Feeling no guilt, he is able to carry out the murder simply to make
money. A normal person would suffer tremendous feelings of guilt for that type
of behavior. A military sniper can justify his job believing that what he does
is for the greater good and may save the lives of people on his side, but in
talking to former soldiers who were snipers, they said that they still have
some conflicted feelings about what they had to do. A sociopath would feel no
              conflict.

Another good job for a sociopath is as a vulture capitalist. This is a
person who takes control of a valuable company, sucks out all of the money and
discards what is left. He has no regard for those individuals who have spent
their lives building a company they can be proud of or the employees that lose
their jobs as a result. His only concern is how much money can be made. By now,
most of you have heard of the trail of destruction left by Mitt Romney and Bain
Capital. For those not familiar with their behavior I will give a brief
analogy. Suppose you borrowed money and bought a new car. Upon its delivery,
you took it to a chop shop and had all of the valuable parts removed and sold.
You then took what was left to a scrapyard and sold it as scrap. You then filed
for bankruptcy and got out of paying back the car loan, but keeping all of the
money you got along the way. If you had a lot of chutzpah you might even file
an insurance claim to get paid for the loss of the car. Of course, in the real
world, you would be arrested and charged with multiple counts of fraud, but in Mitt
              Land this is all legal.

A lot of jokes have been made about strapping his dog to the roof of the car
for a road trip, but how could anyone with an ounce of human compassion for his
family’s pet treat him so cruelly? Only a sociopath would put his convenience
ahead of the health and safety of his children’s pet. Why? To have more room
for his valuables or maybe so he didn’t have to listen to the dog’s barking.
Animal cruelty is one of earliest indicators of a sociopathic personality and
              often precedes human cruelty.

As a candidate, Mitt Romney has changed his position on so many things so
many times, that the running joke is: “If you don’t like Mitt’s position on
something, wait five minutes and he will change it.” As a sociopath, he has no
problem saying whatever he feels his audience wants to hear. All politicians do
this to a point, but most have a line that they won’t cross. If such a line
exists for Mitt Romney, no one has yet to see it.

He has that same deadly combination of traits that Ted Bundy had; he is
charming, handsome, educated, and intelligent. Unlike Bundy, his goals are
money, power and prestige, not literal rape and murder. These are more socially
acceptable goals and I guess we can be grateful for that. Many “normal” people
share these goals and attributes and there is nothing wrong with them, it is
how you go about achieving them. The sociopath will do whatever it takes with
the only limits being what he can get away with.

Along the way he has picked up some endorsements that one could reasonably
question. He has been endorsed by the National Rifle Association as a pro gun
candidate even though his history is far from a pro gun position. Here is a
brief history of how his position has “evolved.”

From the 2008 Opposition Research report prepared by the McCain Campaign.

              • In
1994 Senate race, Romney backed Brady bill and assault weapons ban, saying “I
don’t line up with the NRA” and “that’s not going to make me the hero of the
                NRA.”
              • Romney
called Clinton crime bill “a big step forward.”
              • As
governor, Romney quadrupled gun licensing fees and vowed not to “chip away” at
                tough gun laws
              • In
2004, Romney signed permanent state-level ban on assault weapons that was
mirrored after federal assault weapons ban.
              • In
January 2006, Romney said he owned a gun – then two days later admitted he did
not and the gun belonged to his son.
              • Romney
bragged about being member of the NRA but later revealed he didn’t join until
August 2006, just before launching his presidential campaign.
              • Romney
recently said he’s “been a hunter pretty much all my life” but later admitted
he hunted only twice in his life, later clarifying remarks by claiming he has
hunted “small varmints … more than two times.”
              • In
2006 press conference, Romney claimed he had been hunting “many times” after
returning from quail hunt in Georgia.

In an editorial endorsing Mitt Romney, Guns and Ammo Magazine writer Doug
              Howlett stated:

              Life Under Romney

Whether you believe Romney is a true champion of the Second Amendment or
feel he’s saying what he must to get elected, odds are if the NRA helps him
win, his gratitude will be such that he won’t do anything to upset that support
throughout his term. That means it is doubtful we will see a return to any
“assault weapons” bans or other federal legislation that will infringe upon gun
rights. Without question, where gun rights are concerned, Romney is the hands
              down choice.

Now there is a ringing endorsement. What he is actually saying is that no
matter what Mitt Romney actually believes, he has received his thirty pieces of
silver (actually with inflation it is several million pieces of silver) and is
now bought and paid for. He will do whatever we tell him to do.

To be fair, President Obama has also shifted his position on gun control
over the years. As president, he has signed legislation that permits Amtrak
passengers to carry guns in their checked baggage and another that allows
visitors to national parks and wildlife refuges to possess concealed guns. He
has not pushed for actions he supported in his 2008 campaign, including closing
the so-called “gun show loophole” that allows unlicensed private firearm
sellers to sell weapons at gun shows without conducting the background checks
and reporting requirements that registered gun dealers must conduct.

The bottom line on the gun issue is that regardless of the outcome of the
election, not much will change. The president does not have the authority to
usurp the second amendment and Congress does not have the will to substantially
              change the laws.

Romney has promised that if elected, on day one he will repeal “Obamacare.”
He has also promised to do about 20 other things on day one so it should be a
busy day. Of course, the health care legislation was passed by congress
and signed into law and it would take an act of congress to repeal it so he
lying again. The Supremes have upheld the penalty on those who can afford to
purchase health care insurance but choose not to, calling it a tax. Of course,
Mitt has jumped on the word “tax” and is now claiming that Obama is imposing a
new high tax on everyone. The tax only applies to those who are able to afford
insurance and choose to not buy it. Here, let me have an expert explain it in
detail, as reported on Fox News. (not exactly a bastion of liberal views)

Mitt Romney has finally chosen a clone er… running mate and I find the
choice of Paul Ryan to be a curious one. I don’t see an advantage in this
choice as supporters of Ryan were already firmly in Romney’s camp. It also
focuses scrutiny on the Ryan budget plan, a plan so extreme that even some
conservatives find it onerous. Romney has his own plan to benefit the one
percent, but it is slightly different. Basically it treats the middle class
like a target company from his Bain days. Squeeze all of the money out that you
can and discard what is left.

I can understand the disappointment people feel towards Barack Obama: I feel
much of it myself. The economy has only made modest gains and we are still in
Afghanistan. At least he has resisted attacking Iran, which I believe is in
Romney’s plans. If there were a “none of the above” option on the ballot, I
believe that none would win in a landslide, but given the reality that the real
choice boils down to Obama and Romney, the choice should be obvious. Hold your
nose and do what you have to do.

              This sums it all up.

Sorry for the cut and paste but the article was so well written I couldn't resist.

Interesting.....MSNBC a liberal bastion is using other liberal news outlets as sources to back up their claim?

Romney was right! The US should never apologize for our freedom of speech. Even it is used by a moron trying to get attention.

Obama has been about appeasement and apologies since he was elected, you would think by now he would see that it isn't working!!!!!

Another big distraction from Obama's failures. Has Obama taken a singel question from the white house press corps about this?

I mean the filtered NBC, ABC one on one interviews are on thing but were is the President on this attack? Why is he afraid to answer any questions???

Did Obama return the bust of Winston Churchill to England because of the speech Churchill wrote in 1899?

                      Here is his speech:

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries.

Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries, improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of
slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it.
No stronger retrograde force exists in the world .

Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. Obama's "favor" is higher in the main stream media polls than he truly is. Why? Uh so main stream media can make him look good. They aren't reporting a 15% or 20% different because they know their followers are idiots but not quite THAT stupid. They gotta make it look believable for you ;)
