Obama: Egypt not an ally of US, but not an enemy

Officials said Thursday that President Obama doesn't intend to downgrade Egypt, which gets $1.5 billion a year in U.S. aid. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

LAS VEGAS – President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that while he does not believe Egypt is an ally of the United States, he also doesn't consider the country an enemy.

“I think that we are going to have to see how they respond to this incident,” Obama said in an interview with Telemundo anchor José Diaz-Balart, host of Noticiero Telemundo. He was referring to Tuesday’s protests in Egypt, during which demonstrators, angered by a movie trailer parodying Prophet Muhammad, breached the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.

The president continued: "Certainly in this situation, what we're going to expect is that (the Egyptian government is) responsive to our insistence that our embassy is protected, our personnel is protected, and if they take actions that they’re not taking those responsibilities, as all countries do where we have embassies, I think that’s going to be a real big problem.”


The Rachel Maddow Show includes segments of an interview with President Barack Obama with Telemundo anchor José Díaz-Balart about the U.S. response to the attacks on American missions in Egypt and Libya Tuesday.

Obama’s strong words could mark a dramatic shift in the U.S.’s relationship with Egypt, which has been consistently pro-American since the late president Anwar Sadat. The country has maintained a peace accord with Israel since the 1979 Camp David Accords and since 1982 has received $1.3 billion in military and development aid from the U.S, according to the State Department.

How the recent election of President Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate, will – or already has – affected the relationship between the two countries is still unclear. Morsi was Egypt’s first-ever democratically-elected president.

In the Telemundo interview Wednesday night, Obama also discussed the ambush on the U.S. Consulate in Libya, calling the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Libya "heartbreaking" and repeated his call to bring those responsible to justice.

But when asked by Diaz-Balart whether it was time to "reconsider foreign aid" to Egypt and Libya, Obama said the U.S. “doesn't have an option of withdrawing from the world ... we're the one indispensable nation."

"Libya ... is a government that is very friendly towards us,” Obama continued. “The vast majority of Libyans welcomed the United States' involvement. They understand that it's because of us that they got rid of a dictator who had crushed their spirits for 40 years."

Moammar Gadhafi, who had ruled the country since 1969, was overthrown in August 2011 during the Libyan Civil War triggered by the Arab Spring revolutions.

Earlier Wednesday, Libyan leader Mohammed Magarief took to the airwaves to condemn the killings and to apologize to the U.S.

The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed after protesters angry over a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad stormed the U.S. consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.

President Obama expressed confidence that the Libyan government would help the U.S. in finding those who were responsible for yesterday's violence: "Our hope is to be able to capture them ... but we're going to have to obviously cooperate with the Libyan government. And you know, I have confidence that we will stay on this relentlessly, because Chris Stevens, he's somebody who actually advised me and Secretary Clinton during the original Libyan uprising. He was somebody who Libyans recognized as being on the side of the people. And we're going get help. We're going to get cooperation on this."

Responding to GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s statements that Obama’s initial response was disgraceful, Obama said: “As president, my obligation is to focus on security for our people, making sure that we gather all the facts, making sure that we're advancing American interests. And not having ideological arguments on a day when we are mourning the loss of outstanding folks who have served our country very well.”

The last thing on earth we need to do is give egypt any money or military asistance. Screw Egypt. Our great Dear Leader encouraged this Arab Spring which will turn into a nightmare of Islamic miltancy across the world. The last thing we need to do is give them arms. Dear Leader has opened the proverbial "Pandoras Box" and let the Islamic militant genie out of the bottle. These countries lived relativily peacefully until this crap happened basically only the crazy religious miltants got screwed with and who cares about them. As an Independent, I'm not the biggest Obama supporter. I was actually hoping that the GOP would be able to put forward a viable candidate that would have the necessary values and conviction to make real changes.

Unfortunately, the GOP continues to say one thing and do another. Romney was a below average governor, as is demonstrated by his jobs record. He has zero foreign policy experience, and is showing he would be a disaster on that front. He is void of any details to backup his grandiose claims.

Sorry GOP, you need to decide if you really want small governmet and reduced spending. If so, bring a candidate that will represent these ideals. "ABO" is not an acceptable platform.

It amazes me how uneducated we are as a country. How we could support a president that we know absolutely nothing about. Did you know he attended Indonesia schools that will not allow US citizens to attend? Why cant you find anything about where he attended Columbia university? Yes, the economy is in poor shape, but it's not as bad as it was 4 years ago! And as I recall, it went into the tank during the last year of an eight year republican administration.

I remember watching president G.W. Bush begging congress to pass an emergency 700 billion dollar bailout for the banks as our only chance to possibly avoid another Great Depression four months before he left office and Obama took over. I remember the republican presidential candidate John McCain telling talk show host David Letterman that the economy was "cratering"

The Dow Jones dropped over 50% during the last year and 3 months of the Bush administration and reached it's lowest point just a month and a half after Obama was sworn in. Since then it has rebounded over 100%.

Now who are you calling a massive failure?

And I'm registered as a republican!

One who strongly believes that our government wastes vast sums of the taxpayers money. Apparently a great deal of it on the public schools that taught you just enough so that you can manage to write comments on a forum, but not enough to use a spell checker or to keep track of what's happened in the last 4-5 years.

Frankly, I think Obama has done a pretty good job considering the mess he was handed four years ago, and I plan to vote for his re-election since my party can't seem to find anyone but clowns to run against him.

Four truths are not being told here. The republicans who got us in Iraq and Afghanistan think that any action against beliefs of the christian faith is a reason to go to war. If Romney gets elected, we will be at war with N. Korea, Iran, and Syria. Why? How do you put millions of un-underemployed young males to work and at the same time reduce they potential treat of political and economic change? Send them to war.

First, why is the Preacher from Florida who posted the video be charged as an assorie (spelling) to the murder of the 4 staff members. I tell you why, because he is a right winged christian and republican. Without it being posted, nothing would have happened. Did not he do something like this before. Why not charge the production assistant and put him in jail until he tells the truth about who worked with him to make it and finance the $5 million dollars to make it.

Second, what I see coming with a Republican is America becoming a theocracy. A theocracy in the fundamentalist, the baptist, and the pentacostal church dictate every facet of our society. A theocracy in which if say anything or do anything which is not part of their religious beliefs, the goverment will put you in jail or deport you. What if in the future an anthiest shows a film which portrays Jesus negatively? Will the religious powers in the United States do something to him or her.

This is an internaltional relations problem and it should be treated as such. Did not Romney make two major foreign policy statesment which could have increased terorist attacks if he were presdent. He called Palestinian people geneticly less than the Jews? Did not he snub a natiion at the Olmpics?

It is funny that when a Republican, a Tea-party member, and a right winged fundamentalist christian make an international inflamentary remark nothings happens.

Thirdly, history is full of examples of cultures with different religions suffer imprisionment and death if they do not accept the religious rules and convert to the religion in power. The Hugonauts, The Jews, The Gypies, Indians in North, Central, and South America where persecuted and killed by so-called christian faiths like the Catholic, the Church of England, The Nazi's, and the Christian religious settlers in America. The Crusades murdered millions of Islamic people. The Conquistadors working with the catholic church killed the Indians of the America's if they did not convert.

Finally, world polictics and international relations are complex and gray. Often to do what is best for one's country, you have to sleep with the enemy. The Roschild's of England financed Hilter to make money and bring business to England. Why don't those radical right winged christians who want justice for all, not do any business with China due to mistreatments of Humans Rights? Why would the United States, England, and France make guns for Germany in WWI? Why did the British in WWI want to sell gun sights to Germany while they were fighting against them in WWI. Why did the United States let the Lusitania carry ammunition and guns while it was a passenger ship? Simple, it wanted a reason to enter the war. It needed a reason to go to war, even thought over 70% of the population wanted to stay neutral. It needed to change public opinion.

Why are most of you turning this into politics?

I remember 11 years ago when we were attacked how the Americans came together to show the world what a strong nation this was. Now politicians are bickering trying to score points to gain power and everybody is jumping to conclusions sometimes basing their whole assesment on sometimes skewed reporting.

The sad fact is that round the world there are American haters. Even sadder is the fact that many of these are in countries that are willing to take our aid in one hand and spread hate with the other. Why do they hate us, is it because we take parts in wars depending on which outcome serves our percieved economic needs better. Is it just that everybody always hates the biggest guy or does it come down simply as it does too often to religion?

I like to get my unbiased information from the BBC so why is it that the BBC can dig up information and make their readers better informed so quickly . As we are told this all supposedly stemmed from a cheaply made film that some writers here are accusing the Jews for but the BBC is reporting:

"Another name appeared linked to the film - Morris Sadek - an Egyptian American from the anti-Islamic National American Coptic Assembly. His promotion of the movie brought inquiries into the involvement of Coptic Christian groups"

Maybe we are all being played for fools by fanatics trying to force the American military into action to suit their own agendas and we play ito their hands by acting fools bickering about who should have said or done what and making calls for action.

It is always easy to blame the current president suggesting what should or should not be done but those decisions are never easy especially when the repercussions might result in the deaths of our servicemen or even more hatred. I appreciate that the opposite is that we are seen as a soft nation which anybody can feel free to take a pop at but the more hatred we create towards America the more we will continue to suffer from extremists who want to terrorize us in our homeland. These are never easy decisions to make so perhaps it is good that Barack Obama is not shooting from the hip and is waiting until all the facts are in before he commits the United States to any long term consequences!

        I do a lot of business with people who are not my friends and not my enemies. This is really pretty normal in the history of the world. In new Middle Eastern democracy, the first governments will be weak and will face opposition from extremists of all persuasions. It is smart for the President to distance himself from Egypt's new President. Egypt's new President must calm the anti-American extremists by seeming to be independent of American influence. He must serve the best interests of his nation and be viewed as doing so by his people. Some of Egypt's economic interests depend on the place being viewed by the world as a safe place for tourists, businessmen, and embassies.

        We can hope that he can show his people he has their best interests at heart and is not just some pawn of America. While this may hurt our pride, it really is how the world works. We pursue our best interests and we should let other countries pursue theirs. As long as we can find common interests with them and they with us, we will get along just fine.

        When we overthrew the colonial rule of England, we remained without friends in the world for quite a while (France was preoccupied with French revolution, napoleon to be worried about us). To remain without enemies (except British in war of 1812, and Mexico in 1830's-40's) is how our country established its democracy and grew and prospered.

        Egypt is also a former colony of England.

        It is time to leave the old Cold war thinking of you're either with us or against us.

The problem is that his successes don't come close to matching his failures.

            If you can't accept legitimate criticisms of the man whether you're "for him" or not than you have no business talking about "independent thought". Not everyone who is critical of this President is a right wing loon. There are plenty of us who see that the politicians of both parties are full of @!$%# and the one we have for President does it better than most.             Now that the truth is leaking, we find out this was not some random event, but a well planned and coordinated attack. Apparently it had been planned for some time now, and the first question is why didn't Obama know?             There is no excuse for any of our Embassies in the Middle East not to have been on high alert on the anniversary of 9/11, let alone tipped off to the attack.                 As Sherlock Holes might say, "It is elementary . . . when the host government cannot provide a cast-iron guarantee for the security of embassies, consulates, and associated diplomatic personnel, then it is time to shut up shop and perhaps rent one room in (say) the Finnish Embassy." The lack of such a guarantee puts an end to on site diplomacy and a red line through any aid or military assistance agreements. If Egypt is no more secure than Somalia for US diplomats, they should not be surprised that they get the same treatment.

So, Obama and Clinton get credit for the uprisings from the people that removed dictators all across the middle-east....but because we didn't install a puppet president (as if we could), it was somehow a bad thing....?

                Maybe the Egyptian people, as well as Syrian, Libyan, etc... just got tired of a dictatorship and so rose up to fight for their rights?

                You must have troops on the ground to count as an invasion. No troops, one lie debunked. Runaway spending can't happen without congressional approval. Remember congress passed the bills WITHOUT being paid for (i.e. put on credit card) instead of being responsible and voting for legislation that paid for itself as the President continually proposed but was repeatedly rejected by republicans in the house and senate. The people of Egypt had elections and had 5 different people and groups to vote into office and THEY the people of Egypt CHOSE the Muslim Brotherhood.                         That's an interesting point. Personally I'm an atheist (small "a" with no associated militancy) but even I can comprehend that a lot of Mormons must find that show "The Book of Mormon" offensive and/or insulting.

                        Imagine that those offended Mormons one day decide that they aren't going to take it anymore so they storm the theater, beat the attendees to a pulp, set fire to the building, and kill the director.

                        Personally, as an Atheist, I despise giving anyone a free pass. Islam prevents showing portrayals of Mohammed....from Muslims. What anyone else does is their business. But all we see in this country from Islam is the extremism on TV and News. I work with a Muslim lady and she didn't care about this movie. She sees anti-Islam crap everywhere and knows she can't control it. She's just like your everyday moderate, non-evangelical, Christian.

(Six hours after the statement failed to defuse tensions, the mob breached the embassy's outer wall).

                          The Obama administration issued a statement that this statement was not cleared by the State Department. Obama later said that it was easy for someone sitting in the safety of their campaign headquarters to criticize the statement issued by someone at the embassy who thought their life might be in peril from the angry mob outside. Obama went on to say it was understandable for a person in this situation to issue such a statement.

                          Today, Hillary Clinton condemned the film trailer as well and it deserves to be condemned. Freedom of religion is a freedom we hold dear and religious intolerance as demonstrated by this film trailer is the enemy of freedom of religion. Egypt does not yet grasp this freedom, but it works by reducing animosity between religions and their faithful following. Freedom of speech is not our only freedom and sometimes one freedom can threaten another freedom.

                            This is all moot at this point since the statement has been "clarified". First Carny explained that what the President meant was that they were not technically our "ally" since that is a legal term with specific meaning. And then later the State Dept spokesperson "clarified" the situation again by admitting that they actually are our "ally" as per a treaty signed in the 80's

                            So in the end it was just more clueless bumbling from the WH that will largly be ignored by the media.

                              Actually it is being spilled that the Egyptian intelligence knew about what was being planned almost a week in advance yet they did not communicate it to us so at least WE could take precautious measures or just get our people out. WE did nothing and neither did the Egyptian government. We should be cutting off their foreign aid(and almost all other foreign aid for that matter). Unfotunately our leader is not leading. I do not know if Romney will be better or not but when you have such low standards as we have had to adopt over the last few years just try something else. We did it as a country in 2008 and it is not really working out. So let's CHANGE again and see if it gets better. If not then we CHANGE again. This is not about one side or the other it should be about the American people. The ambassadors we did not adequately protect and the countries who did not protect them either. If an angry mob were marching on the Egyptian Consulate in the US do you think our government would sit idly by and say "gee were really sorry this is happening"??? We cannot have double standards. We need to be firm and our President needs to be firm. So have your investigation that is fine but Egypt did nothing to protect our people as was their obligation. The US embassy in Egypt is techinically American soil. It was invaded. It was an act of war. So find all the information and get as many statements as you want but the actions or rather lack of actions of the Egyptian government were so loud it will be hard to really hear what they are saying. Stop thinking with your hearts and start using your brain.

                              This is a serious statement, if the Egyptian government refuses to protect our people why would one think of them as our allies or anything in between that and enemies? They knew about what was going to happen, should we not just take away our money and get our people out of there? That's okay care more about who you want for president than American citizens abroad doing work for their country. Good foreign policy.

                              Houston, the entire area in and around Benghazi is a hotbed for Islamic radicals. This was NOT surprising, especially since our consulate there had been attacked before a few months ago. Plus, Libya continues to roil in violent conflict on a daily basis even though american mainstream media lost interest after an election was held ("MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!) and therefore stopped reporting on it. That didn't make anything go away and the situation there is just as dicey as ever. The only difference is that most all of us stopped hearing about it.

                              Surely the administration in charge would have known how dangerous things still were/are there, especially in/around Benghazi, but they DID NOT SECURE our consulate there and -- suprise, surprise -- the radicals chose the anniversary of 9-11 to launch their deadly assault.

                              Where was the security? The Marines? The Special Forces? The Navy Seals on a destroyer just off the coast there? The contingency plans? The rapid response? The embassy was under violent attack for at least FOUR HOURS by reports I've seen. It's an absolute DISGRACE that this attack was not beaten back before our diplomats were murdered there!

Mr Fire off a Press Release based on an e-mail from the Embassy in Egypt??????? Right, this coming from the man that doesn't need fact checkers in his campaign.                                   A) Romney was asked a direct question about security at the Olympics. He gave an honest and correct answer. The company hired to supply security personnell for The Games came up short on its fulfilled contract. Troops were then brought in to make up for the shortage.

                                  The rest of your post sounds like you started hitting the hard stuff before breakfast and are babbling incoherently. Maybe you should just laugh at yourself ... the rest of us are already laughing at you !

                                    This response has been terrible. I try to read through both sides and from the unbelievable to the party line none are acceptable. I am truly wondering have we found someone asleep at the wheel. I have no confidence in this group to handle anything.                                         Now his approach to "clarity" is to declare Egypt "not a friend but not an enemy". Oh that's real clear. This is Obama's approach to foreign policy.                                                 The killing of a US official is a horrible incident. They do not deserve financial aid in any way shape or form. They have received billions of dollars in aid and act like that. I am a christian and when they offend me, I do not run out and lynch a Muslim or Arabic. I wish our President was more stern.
