Subdued Biden pays tribute to victims of Libya attack

FAIRBORN, OH -- The morning after a mob in Libya killed four Americans at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazzi, a subdued Joe Biden paid tribute to the dead and promised justice for their killers.

"These men are as brave and as courageous as any of our warriors that we’ve sent," Biden said of the four Americans killed, first noting that the late Ambassador Chris Stevens fought for the liberation of the Libyan people.

"The cause to which they dedicated their lives and gave their lives, democracy, partnership, tolerance, stands in sharp contrast to the values of those who callously took their lives," he said. "And let me be clear, we are resolved to bring to justice their killers."

The vice president also called for recognition of all foreign service officers, whose jobs often put them in danger and whose careers aren't "all about going to coffees and teas."

"As we always have, Americans must be steadfast, resolved and committed in the face of such horrific events," he added. "We never have been and we will not be run off, period."

Biden, who appeared at a campaign rally at Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio (which he at one point mistook for Michigan's Wayne State), offered fewer of his red meat lines than usual, barely mentioning opponents Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan by name.

But he did pivot from his recognition of the Middle East conflict to his stump speech by drawing an implicit contrast with Romney over the GOP's ticket's view of foreign policy as a "sidelight."

"Foreign policy is not some sidelight to all of this," he said. "And you deserve all of America deserve leaders who will tell you what they intend to do in both spheres."

Obama's much ballyhooed 2009 speech in Cairo, part of his Apology Tour will go down in history with the Neville Chamberlin speech..

Appeasement doesnt work.

First Read and NBC is spinning furiously on Obama's behalf. The voters will weight this issue, and likely this will be hurt Obama , seen as weak regarding Muslim fanaticism.

After the history books print all the Faux lies for posterity:

The good people of America may or may not accept an apology from the Limbaughs, the Becks et al. for standing in the way of American progress. For lying through their teeth, and convincing folks like you of utter balderdash.

In the movie, THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT, Michael Douglas is called upon to order a "proportionate response" in the form of an attack on a Libyan government building in retaliation for the Libyans bombing a US military installation in Israel.

Douglas hesitates. When his advisors tell him that ordering the attack will make him appear more "presidential," he wisely replies that ordering the deaths of other is --

"the least Presidential thing I do."

If you remember Iraq, be VERY careful what you wish for.

Through Obama's noted weaknesses, he has brought us to the brink of another war. How do you Liberals feel about that fact?

Give me a break Anna. Using a movie as a prop. Let's remember that Bush gave plenty of warning, offered several options, took it in front of Congress that approved the military action.

Still waiting on Congressional approval for that Libya "conflict" Probably won't get any this time around either. Obama is loose cannon, a President with a cowboy "mentality" and go it alone policy.

The way I understand the statement - which was issued before any embassy attacks - was that the United States believes in religious tolerance.

Of course, we all have to put up with bigoted racist tripe from idiots because their First Amendment rights prohibit the government from shutting down the stupid and ill-informed. RWNJs on this board prove that point. The embarassment for all those who actually live the principles of the Constitution is that anyone in this country is backward enough to believe that Islam in and of itself is evil.

Actually Joanne Obama's diplomacy has kept us from another war. Ol' bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran, Mc Cain would have had us in another world war with several enemies at once. Strength comes from using diplomacy to defuse situations. Leaders do it all the time. As a manager of people I had to defuse arguments from time to time. I didn't need to use force but diplomacy. The same occurs, on a greater scale, between nations. People say and do stupid things. When someone does do we resort to cowboy diplomacy and simply blow their head off or do we diplomatically defuse the situation. Egypt has been one of the few Arab allies we've had and we don't need to screw things up now by going to war with them. Libya not so friendly but still, there is a chance for us to have another ally in North Africa by taking the opportunity to make friends with them using respect and diplomacy especially now that their dictatorial leader is kaput.

dirp: Joanna Smith: so now you are advocating the US go to war against Libya ?

What do you suggest? Another apology from our CoC? Doesn't he look weak enough?

See this is the problem dirp, now that Obama has been proven to be weak, he may make the jump to trying to appear strong. Too bad it will take boots on the ground and more casualties trying to fight these gangs, you know, just like Obama is trying to do in Afghanistan.

This is what a show of weakness and "leading from behind" gets you.

Adler: Strength comes from using diplomacy to defuse situations

And what diplomacy defused this situation, or the one in Egypt, or the one going in Iran? Looking forward to your explanation.

As much as i disagree with the filmmaker's views, and find them despicable, this country gives him the right to say them. i highly doubt that the filmmaker is intelligent enough to see the effects of his film that was made back in July would be on this day, and i don't think the 'screaming fire in a crowded theatre' argument against the freedom of speech would apply in this case (i'm no lawyer, but that is my gut feeling).

Is teh filmmaker a craven? yes. Should he have limited the video to only allow access to the intended audience? yes. Did he put our country at risk of retaliation knowing about the response to the Dutch cartoonist not long ago? yes. Is he guilty of murder of an ambassador and 3 other americans? no. The ones that are responsible are the militants in Libya who killed americans, but there is a lesson to be learned in this: Just because you have the right to say something, doesn't mean you should say it (or post the video to the web in this instance) (been trying to teach my sons this lesson with mixed results...)

false equivalency. i addressed the fire in theatre in my last point, and making a video and posting it online is much different. it is conjecture that the filmmaker translated the film into arabic (unless you can provide a source that this was done?), i highly doubt that the filmmaker speaks arabic, and it is easy enough for a militant to get a pirated copy of the video and translate/audio dub over it to use as a propaganda tool for their purposes.

We cannot pick and choose who gets the protections of the First Amendment because we disagree with their viewpoints, as that weakens the bill of rights for all of us.

Article in the NYT is sayign that the Libya attack may not have anything to do with the movie, but might have more to do with the AQ leader in Libya being killed by a drone bomb.

About 24 hours before the consulate attack, however, Al Qaeda posted to militant forums on the Web a video in which its leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, acknowledged the death in an American drone strike in June of his Libyan deputy, Abu Yahya al-Libi, and called on Libyans to avenge the death.

This is why it is best not to jump to conclusions and take things in a steady, thoughtful manner...

So Willard expected the Cairo diplomats to retract their statements defending religious tolerance or the President to condemn the diplomats trying to defuse a tense situation. He is not ready for prime time. I am so looking forward to Willard's descent into the ash heap of history!

Here's to a quick sharp descent. "Hey Mitt please take the Tea Party with you on your way down."

I recall when Carter tried to rescue the hostages in Iran. Bush Sr. said it simply. In situations like this you SUPPORT the President.

It's clear that Mitt and his Mutt have no sense of decency to even attempt to turn this into a political issue. He was already in trouble, but he forgot the golden rule. When American's are faced with tragedy we don't run away from each other, we pull together so we can pull through together.

So perhaps some of these so called American's should consider our history before trying to win an election by lies and deceit.

It is a political issue...our President is weak, apologetic, and leads from behind. Maybe Obama can have one of those Beer Summits with those crazy Muslims.

So in his haste to be the first to comment, Romney put his foot in his mouth. This time though it may be more serious; between, this and his comments about Israel, Syria and Iran, Romney is destabilizing the entire middle east. This man is not presidential material....he's just not smart enough about anything but hiding his earnings and his tax returns.

Joe Biden knows more about diplomacy and foreign policy than any of the other 3 candidates combined. The second is Obama followed in a distant third are Lyin' Ryan and Willard (it's my turn) Romney.

Bullying other soverign nations isn't going to get us anywhere. Didn't we learn anything from Dubya's stupidity in foreign affairs? Joe is right and the course of this Administration has been pretty good so far. Secretary Clinton has her hands full trying to clean up the mess left by Dubya and restore the respect and admiration for America previous Administrations worked so hard to foster.

Diplomats who serve in places with such unrest take their jobs seriously or they wouldn't be there. They want to be in those places. This one died doing what he loved to do. We can't rule the world. There are always those risks. Just like here in America there are neighborhoods one stays out of but the unexpected happens when the nice man down the street is murdered in cold blood by some thug. Whose fault is that? The thug, of course.

As for the movie, yes they can excercise their First Amendment right to free speech but to criticize another's religion is not how we roll here in America. Our nation exists because of a quest for religious freedom. While most people, including Muslims, will dismiss the film in question as the rantings of a fool there are the zealots of the other side who will take those rantings seriouisly and attempt to do something. Unfortunately those being attacked are not the idiot(s) who made the movie but innocent diplomats trying to make and keep peace among people of the world.

Adler, talk about one of the most ignorant statements of the year... "But to criticize another religion is not how we roll in America." Thats all you liberal f-tards do is make fun of people that believe in God.

I cannot speak for all "liberals", but I enjoy making fun of people that place emphasis on their religion but don't even abide by its teachings.

Liberals do make fun of people who believe in God. Almost every thread has nasty remarks concerning people who believe in God.

One of the things that has been most troubling since 9/11 is our confusion of Islamic terrorists (who are to be condemned) with ordinary people who practice the Muslim faith. Many of those ordinary Muslims are our fellow citizens--they pay taxes, fight in our military and, yes, they have died for their country--the United States. Every time I hear someone "accuse" the President of being a Muslim (which of course we all know he isn't) I wonder why we can't be more tolerant of other religions or those who choose to practice no religion. Religious freedom was one of the ideals that brought the Founding Fathers here in the first place.

So while the DNC was honoring our troops at their big party, they made a big oops. Seems the pictures shown on the big screen of ships, weren't of our ships, but were actually Russian ships. Way to go Debbie and the DNC.
