Timeline: Political fallout from the attack on diplomats in Libya

The political fallout associated with the attacks Tuesday on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi that left four dead, including an American ambassador, was the product of a fluid and quickly evolving situation on the ground in Egypt and Libya.

President Barack Obama delivers a statement alongside Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, following the death of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and others, in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, September 12, 2012.

At the heart of Mitt Romney's criticism of President Barack Obama (for "apologizing for the right of free speech") was a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Egypt on Tuesday as protests there and in Libya crept up in reaction to a controversial film about the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a clip of which was set for screening by the Florida pastor Terry Jones.

At 6:17 a.m. ET on Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy in Egypt released this statement:

The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.

At a 1 p.m. ET briefing, State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland confirmed that the U.S. Embassy in Cairo had suffered a breach – around noon ET:

We did have reports just before I came down here that we had a protest outside our embassy in Cairo. We had some people breach the wall, take the flag down, replace it -- what I heard was that it was replaced with a ... With a black flag -- a plain black flag, but I may not be correct in that. We are obviously working with Egyptian security to try to restore order at the embassy and to work with them to try to get the situation under control.

By mid-afternoon Tuesday, this statement provoked criticism from some conservative bloggers, who characterized it as an "apology" for American values (i.e., free speech) rather than a strong condemnation of the protests, which would later metastasize into attacks on those diplomatic missions. Conservatives furthermore suggested that it was no coincidence that these demonstrations were occurring on the 11-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks on New York and Washington.

Through it all, the situation on the ground in Egypt and Libya was changing rapidly. NBC News and other news organizations were monitoring reports that the situation in both countries was potentially deteriorating.

At 4:29 p.m. ET, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo issued a series of tweets, some of which simultaneously defended its earlier statement and condemned the compound attackers. The Romney campaign seized on these tweets to argue that the original statement had remained the embassy’s policy even after the breach:

2) Of course we condemn breaches of our compound, we're the ones actually living through this.

3) Sorry, but neither breaches of our compound or angry messages will dissuade us from defending freedom of speech AND criticizing bigotry

At 6:25 p.m. ET, Nuland confirmed, via email, that the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, was under attack:

“We can confirm that our office in Benghazi, Libya has been attacked by a group of militants.  We are working with the Libyans now to secure the compound. We condemn in strongest terms this attack on our diplomatic mission.”

At 6:32 p.m. ET, Nuland said that demonstrators had been removed from the Cairo compound. There was no indication at this point whether there was a connection between the Cairo and Benghazi incidents:

“In Cairo, we can confirm that Egyptian police have now removed the demonstrators who had entered our Embassy grounds earlier today.”

As the evening progressed, vague reports emerged suggesting that an "American" had been killed in the Libya assault, though there was no indication of that person's identity. It had been emphasized to news organizations that the situation in Libya was fluid.

/

The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed after protesters angry over a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad stormed the U.S. consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.

At 10:10 p.m. ET, the Romney campaign emailed a statement from the Republican presidential nominee to media organizations about the violence in both countries, reporting of which was prohibited (or "embargoed") until 12 a.m. ET Wednesday:

“I'm outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It's disgraceful that the Obama Administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”

At around the same time, POLITICO posted a story featuring a quote from a "senior administration official" appearing to disavow the statements from Cairo. This would emerge as fodder for Romney on Wednesday:

"The statement by Embassy Cairo was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government," an administration official told POLITICO.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton comments on the death of U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens.

At 10:13 p.m. ET, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton issued the following statement:

I condemn in the strongest terms the attack on our mission in Benghazi today. As we work to secure our personnel and facilities, we have confirmed that one of our State Department officers was killed.  We are heartbroken by this terrible loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and those who have suffered in this attack.

This evening, I called Libyan President Magariaf to coordinate additional support to protect Americans in Libya. President Magariaf expressed his condemnation and condolences and pledged his government's full cooperation.

Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.

In light of the events of today, the United States government is working with partner countries around the world to protect our personnel, our missions, and American citizens worldwide.

At 10:26 p.m. ET, the Romney campaign lifted its embargo on the GOP candidate's statement.

At 11:11 p.m. ET, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus tweeted the following:

Obama sympathizes with attackers in Egypt. Sad and pathetic.

At 12:11 a.m. ET, Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt issued the following statement:

“We are shocked that, at a time when the United States of America is confronting the tragic death of one of our diplomatic officers in Libya, Governor Romney would choose to launch a political attack.”

At 6:17 a.m. ET, NBC News confirmed and reported that U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens was among those killed at the mission in Benghazi.

President Obama, alongside Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, condemns "in the strongest terms" the "outrageous and shocking attack" that claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

At 7:22 a.m. ET, President Obama issued the following statement:

I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Right now, the American people have the families of those we lost in our thoughts and prayers. They exemplified America's commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe, and stand in stark contrast to those who callously took their lives.

I have directed my Administration to provide all necessary resources to support the security of our personnel in Libya, and to increase security at our diplomatic posts around the globe. While the United States rejects efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, we must all unequivocally oppose the kind of senseless violence that took the lives of these public servants.

On a personal note, Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States. Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi. As Ambassador in Tripoli, he has supported Libya's transition to democracy. His legacy will endure wherever human beings reach for liberty and justice. I am profoundly grateful for his service to my Administration, and deeply saddened by this loss.

The brave Americans we lost represent the extraordinary service and sacrifices that our civilians make every day around the globe. As we stand united with their families, let us now redouble our own efforts to carry their work forward.

At 7:43 a.m. ET, Secretary Clinton issued the following statement:

It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the death of four American personnel in Benghazi, Libya yesterday. Among them were United States Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and Foreign Service Information Management Officer, Sean Smith.  We are still making next of kin notifications for the other two individuals. Our hearts go out to all their families and colleagues.

A 21 year veteran of the Foreign Service,  Ambassador Stevens died last night from injuries he sustained in the attack on our office in Benghazi.

I had the privilege of swearing in Chris for his post in Libya only a few months ago. He spoke eloquently about his passion for service, for diplomacy and for the Libyan people. This assignment was only the latest in his more than two decades of dedication to advancing closer ties with the people of the Middle East and North Africa which began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco.  As the conflict in Libya unfolded, Chris was one of the first Americans on the ground in Benghazi. He risked his own life to lend the Libyan people a helping hand to build the foundation for a new, free nation. He spent every day since helping to finish the work that he started. Chris was committed to advancing America's values and interests, even when that meant putting himself in danger.

Sean Smith was a husband and a father of two, who joined the Department ten years ago. Like Chris, Sean was one of our best.  Prior to arriving in Benghazi, he served in Baghdad, Pretoria, Montreal, and most recently The Hague.

All the Americans we lost in yesterday's attacks made the ultimate sacrifice. We condemn this vicious and violent attack that took their lives, which they had committed to helping the Libyan people reach for a better future.

America's diplomats and development experts stand on the front lines every day for our country. We are honored by the service of each and every one of them.

Around 9 a.m. ET, a senior administration official described to NBC News the process by which the president was notified and briefed:

The president was informed of the Libya situation by NSA Donilon yesterday afternoon as he started his weekly meeting with the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. The President was updated on both incidents several times throughout the evening and again this morning.

The president was notified last night that Ambassador Stevens was unaccounted for and then notified again this morning about his tragic death.

In the same hour, Clinton appeared on camera at the State Department to make remarks about Stevens's death. She said (excerpt):

This is an attack that should shock the conscience of people of all faiths around the world. We condemn in the strongest terms, this senseless act of violence and we send our prayers to the families, friends and colleagues of those we've lost.

All over the world every day, America's diplomats and development experts risk their lives in the service of our country and our values because they believe that the United States must be a force for peace and progress in the world, that these aspirations are worth striving and sacrificing for. Alongside our men and women in uniform, they represent the best traditions of a bold and generous nation.

In the lobby of this building, the State Department, the names of those who have fallen in the line of duty are inscribed in marble. Our hearts break over each one. And now because of this tragedy, we have new heroes to honor and more friends to mourn.

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney criticizes the Obama administration concerning their response to the "disgusting" attack on the US consulate in Libya in which Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

Around the same time, Romney re-arranged a planned rally in Jacksonville, Fla., to hold a 10:16 a.m. ET press conference, used in part to reiterate his criticism of Obama.

Some of Romney's statements include:

America will not tolerate attacks against our citizens and against our embassies. We'll defend also our constitutional rights of speech and assembly and religion.

We have confidence in our cause in America. We respect our Constitution. We stand for the principles our Constitution protects. We encourage other nations to understand and respect the principles of our Constitution, because we recognize that these principles are the ultimate source of freedom for individuals around the world.

I also believe the administration was wrong to stand by a statement sympathizing with those who had breached our embassy in Egypt, instead of condemning their actions. It's never too early for the United States government to condemn attacks on Americans and to defend our values.

The White House distanced itself last night from the statement, saying it wasn't cleared by Washington. That reflects the mixed signals they're sending to the world.

[...]

I think it's a terrible course for America to stand in apology for our values. That instead, when our grounds are being attacked and being breached, that the first response of the United States must be outrage at the breach of the sovereignty of our nation.

An apology for America's values is never the right course.

[...]

The White House also issued a statement saying it tried to distance itself from those comments and said they were not reflective of their views. I had the exact same reaction. These views were inappropriate. They were the wrong course to take when our embassy has been breached by protesters. The first response should not be to say, "Yes, we stand by our comments that -- that suggest that there's something wrong with the right of free speech."

[...]

The president takes responsibility not just for the words that come from his mouth, but also from the words that come from his ambassadors from his administration, from his embassies, from his State Department.

They clearly sent mixed messages to the world and the statement that came from the administration and the embassy is the administration. The statement that came from the administration was a statement which is akin to apology and I think was a severe miscalculation.

At 10:42 a.m. ET, Obama appeared in the Rose Garden to address the incident in Benghazi, but made no reference to Romney's attack. An excerpt:

Every day all across the world, American diplomats and civilians work tirelessly to advance the interests and values of our nation. Often, they are away from their families. Sometimes, they brave great danger.

Yesterday, four of these extraordinary Americans were killed in an attack on our diplomatic post in Benghazi. Among those killed was our ambassador, Chris Stevens, as well as Foreign Service Officer Sean Smith. We are still notifying the families of the others who were killed.

And today, the American people stand united in holding the families of the four Americans in our thoughts and in our prayers.

The United States condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous and shocking attack. We're working with the government of Libya to secure our diplomats. I've also directed my administration to increase our security at diplomatic posts around the world. And make no mistake, we will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people.

Since our founding, the United States has been a nation that respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. But there is absolutely no justification for this type of senseless violence. None. The world must stand together to unequivocally reject these brutal acts.

Throughout the morning, statements from a variety of lawmakers flowed in, though most Republicans avoided the kind of harsh criticism of Obama voiced most prominently by Romney.

Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, says, "This is a time for healing. It's a time for resolve. In the face of such a tragedy, we are reminded that the world needs American leadership."

At 12:14 p.m. ET, Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan appeared in Wisconsin to address the Libya situation, though he also avoided direct criticism of Obama.

I want to begin unfortunately on a somber note. We woke up to some pretty disturbing news this morning. I know all Americans today are shocked and saddened by the news from the Middle East. The attacks on our diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya and the loss of four American lives including our Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. This is outrageous. Our hearts are heavy and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families and I would just like to ask at this moment that we join together in a moment of silence in memory of them. [MOMENT OF SILENCE] Thank you.  This is a time for healing. It is a time for resolve. And in the face of such a tragedy, we are reminded that the world needs American leadership. And the best guarantee of peace is American strength.

At around 1:04 p.m. ET, Vice President Joe Biden told supporters gathered in Ohio:

"The cause to which they dedicated their lives and gave their lives, democracy, partnership, tolerance, stands in sharp contrast to the values of those who callously took their lives," he said. "And let me be clear, we are resolved to bring to justice their killers."

We have a crazy conservative pastor, Terry Jones who, a few months ago burned a number of Qurans and has now produced a film that ridiculed
the Prophet Muhammad, thus directly or indirectly leading to the deaths of
American citizens. Then, without garnering any of the facts we have candidate Mitt Romney making a huge error in judgment by attacking our President while President Obama is working with the Libyan government to bring these terrorists to justice.

It's hard to determine who has the poorest judgment, Terry Jones or Mitt Romney.

WHATEVER is going on in Libya, it is NOT about Mitt Romney.

Does Romney get it, or not?

He is using the 'Shoot First GOP strategy'.

Romney didn't get his facts straight, or ask any questions about causes.

Romney is just plain dangerous and ignorant.

Willard Mitt Romney is a former one term governor. He is incapable of running a campaign, let alone actually being President of the United States. As anyone who is actually in the business of governing knows, you do not attack the President in the midst of an on going situation.

Political attacks can always take place at a later date. Putting forth an attack before all of the facts are known will, more often than not, make you look foolish once all of the facts are known. Because Willard Romney opened his mouth before he knew what was going on, he does look stupid.

Nothing anyone says will save Willard Romney from this failure.

He should just drop out of the race for President.

Some Fools in our government and media are SHOCKED that this could happen.

Too bad they all turned their heads and willfully ignored what happened this past March, 2012, after Libya was "liberated" by the U.S. bombing campaign on their behalf. The video (by one of their own) shows radical Muslims desecrating the Benghazi war graves of British Commonwealth soldiers from WWII, in broad daylight.

Have a look for yourself and you will not be surprised that these same people have now burned down our consulate there and murdered our ambassador to that country:

Here is what we actually know, a US embassy openly apologized to terrorists because a US citizen made a movie that didn't break any laws. I haven't heard one reporter ask President Obama if they supported that statement. All I've heard is reporters asking Romney why he has a problem with that statement---that seems backwards to me.

Our president needs to explain if he supports the statement issued by our embassy. You don't get to have it both ways you don't get to condemn the attacks in one breath and have your staff sympathize with terrorists. Reporters do your job.

@firefly. The comments are not being disputed by the Obama administration. As a matter of fact, they tried to distance themselves from the comments as anyone in office would do. People in the State Department know they cannot run their mouth like that because bad stuff can happen. That person needs to be reprimanded.

Why do Neo-Conservatives such as yourself lie? When It's already been demonstrated that there was no apology from the US Embassy, why do you continue to perpetuate a lie? Why do Neo-Conservatives hate America?

President Obama made his statement condemning the attacks and vowing that we will bring them to justice. Remember, Obama gave the order to get bin Laden. The Neo-Conservative GW Bush did not. The Neo-Conservative GW Bush allowed bin Laden to live in order to maintain a "boogeyman". Why do Neo-Conservatives hate America?

Not only did he express support by repeating a portion of it, he reiterated his condemnation of the attacks. His staff did not express sympathy with terrorists. Why do Neo-Conservatives lie? Why do Neo-Conservatives hate America?

Romney has hired the Neo-Conservative George W. Bush's Neo-Con advisers for foreign policy (who do we invade) and economics (where do we borrow the money to invade?) Why do Neo-Conservatives hate America. Republicans have chosen to support Romney and his Neo-Conservative advisors. Why do Republicans hate America?

I must of missed something, which branch of the service did Obama serve in?

How about ~ ~ ~ all of them? Right now he is supreme commander of Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and US Coast Guard. It is his responsibility ~ and that of the various branches of the uniformed services ~ to protect your sorry ass while you throw nothing but criticism in recognition of that gift. Why not confine your activities to things at which you excel ~ like fondling yourself?

Liberals deflect to military service when it suits them (Romney never served and isnt qualified to be CIC) when you point it out that Obamao never served, these kooky moonbats claim there were no wars he was old enough to have partaken in and when pushed further about military service isnt just about wartime (see warmongering libs), you get cricket chirps. Wow, defensive much? Lol! My lame excuse for this "tax-dodging, Caymen Island-money-hiding ideological idiot" is that he is a politician. Just like your "ideological idiot" is. Both are going to try to spin an error into something else. As for the tax-dodging, give me a break. What do you think he should have done -- looked at his taxes and said "hey, I know I'm not legally required to, but I think I'm going to give more to the government this year! Just because." He did NOTHING illegal, you idiot.

Here is what we actually know, a US embassy openly apologized to terrorists because a US citizen made a movie that didn't break any laws

Did you even read the statement from the US Embassy? No apology, just a condemnation of an offensive movie in an attempt to PREVENT violence.

So which part of the statement did you disagree with - Condemnation of "hate speech"? Respect for other religions? Do you think it is honorable to use the power of Free Speech to deliberately promote religous intolerance and provoke violence?

Freedom of Speech goes both ways - I cannot prevent someone from saying something blasphemous or inflammatory but I can sure as hell disagree with it - LOUDLY.

Harley Chic: “The true legacy of 9/11 will not be one of fear or hate or division. It will be a safer world; a stronger nation; and a people more united than ever before.” – captioned on a photo from Obama's FB from yesterday.

But, don't let the facts get in the way of your "muslim brotherhood" argument. If it wasn't a ridiculous attack of that nature, you'd be lambasting Obama for politicizing 9/11 instead.

Romney's comments (and yours, for that matter) seem to display a complete disregard for the facts on the ground in Egypt and a lack of understanding of the situation there. What was construed as an apology is also pretty clearly a message saying that we, in this country, are free to speak our minds even when those opinions are distasteful or hurtful; their actions don't represent all of us any more than the actions of the group at the embassy in Egypt yesterday represents their entire nation.

It was also classless and destructive, but that's just my opinion.

They are protesting Obama's spiking the ball on killing Osama Bin Laden and all of their other leaders using the drones. This is why they are protesting on the aniversity of 9 - 11.

This was a planned attack because of Obama's politicizing the death of Osama Bin Ladin. Not to smart or presidential.

10 REASONS WHY ISLAMIC TERRORISTS WANT MITT ROMNEY TO WIN

1) President Obama's sane, measured responses to issues in the Moslem world work against their efforts to stir up trouble and portray the U.S. as the "great Satan". They see Mitt Romney as a knee jerk President that will over-react, which is exactly what they are after.

2) President Obama has successfully and systematically targeted their leadership. Islamic terrorists were safer under a Republican administration.

3) Mitt Romney will say and do anything for Israeli support. Even turn the other way to Muslim targeted hate speech and call movies that demonize Muslim religious figures as pedophiles, as acceptable vehicles for "free speech"without condemnation. This plays into the hands of those wishing to whip the peaceful Muslim majority into a frenzied mob.

4) Republican presidents invade, attack, destroy and rebuild the entire Muslim infrastructure. Iraq and Afghanistan were rebuilt with US taxpayer dollars instead of using targetted and much cheaper methods to destroy terrorist bases. Having foreign troops on Muslim soil is a huge boost to Muslim terrorists as they seek to portray the US as Christian invaders.

5) Romney's energy policy will make the Muslim world rich and wealthy, causing a flow of dollars from democratic governments to Muslim monarchies, which, once overthrown, can put the money in the control of the terrorists elements. Bush/Romney's support of Saudi princes is better than Obama's support of Arab democracy if you're looking to overthrow a government.

6) The availability of weapons is easier to come by in countries that are invaded by Republican presidents. The fog of war creates many opportunities for terrorists to obtain weapons that would normally not be available to them. The US military leaves behind much that can be used again. Republican administrations have been more than willing to negotiate deals with Iran, Iraq, and other unstable or despotic regimes in the past, just to further weapons sales.

7) Romney will bring the war to the Middle East, rather than the terrorists having to try to hit U.S. targets. Republican presidents have ignored Presidential Daily Briefings that forewarned terrorist attacks against the U.S., GOP presidents have decided to attack countries that haven't attacked the U.S., and GOP presidents have protected the hotbeds of Islamic terrorism, wealthy Arab countries that have produced the leadership for Islamic terrorist organizations, such as Al Qaida.

8) Islamic militants see Romney as a weaker president, someone they can dupe into making mistakes, miscalculations, and remarks that inflame the Muslim world to accept their point of view, that the U.S. wants to dominate and control them, and force western lifestyles on the Muslim world. Romney's remarks about the Israeli vs. Arab economies is just the right amount of racism and condescension that Islamic militants need to boost anti US sentiments.

9) Islamic militants and terrorists see Romney as one who would weaken the US economy with trickle down economics. For them, a weaker US is a better foe.

10) Romney has been critical of the Arab Spring uprisings. He's happier maintaining the Muslim dictators that the general Muslim public deplores. To that end, he helps the terrorist cause and drives Muslims to extremism to rid themselves of these dictators, while at the same time feeding into the idea that the US is the "great Satan" helping to keep the average Muslim family subservient to the dictators.

At the core of this issue we have religion, all religion, clouding individual’s judgment and obstructing their view of the reality that functions by action and consequence. Am I saying everyone should be afraid to use freedom of speech, no. But we are all already aware of the many differences in culture and violence in extreme Islam, why this group of people felt they needed to poke the beehive is beyond me. Provoking this group of people is not the solution to the problem. I hope every American involved in the creation of the film and the quoted “over 100 Israeli financial backers of the film” realize that they have once again cost the lives of hard working peaceful Americans and are haunted by that thought forever. If they didn’t realize the reaction their video would cause, they are as small minded as they are intolerant which is proven ten-fold considering the financial backers have had their own bouts with intolerance.

Romeny / Ryan are unqualified for the job and they don't even believe their going to win, otherwise, why is Ryan running ads for his congressional campaign???? Isn't that a waste of money???

the article presents the time line to the events and the right still doesn't read it. THE STATEMENT PUT OUT BY THE EMBASSY IN EGYPT WAS HOURS BEFORE THE ATTACK IN LIBYA. Even with your "hooked on phonics", you should read that fact.

If the GOP had offered a valid canidate, you might of had a chance, but Huntsman (the only smart one of the group) wasn't crazy enough to get through the primaries and wouldn't lower his standards to do so.

Oh, justin case, let's give the whole quote then:

"In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for instance, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction"

Obama was saying he would not vote to intern an entire group of American citizens based solely on their religion or ethnicity, reminding us of the wrong done to Japanese Americans who were interned just because of their ethnicity during World War II. Since this is both the moral and the constitutional stance to take, I fail to see why anyone would have a problem with it.

I see. So even though I put in my 20 years of faithful service to the United States of America, my opinion is insulting to my brothers and sisters while you, being a Neo-Conservative, have a much more valid opinion?

Did you know that during the Vietnam war, George HW Bush was able to obtain an opening in the Texas Air National Guard for his son George. Were you aware that George went AWOL in excess of 30 consecutive days making him a deserter? Do you know what they were doing to deserters from the reserve component during the Vietnam War? They activated them and sent them to Vietnam. Do you know what they did with George W. Bush? ...look it up.

Your hero Willard Romney toured France on his deferment during the war while hundreds of thousands of Americans, and I toured basic training. My only point is that it doesn't take a military genius to act as Commander in Chief but you better have good advisers if nothing else. Do you know who Romney's advisers are? George W Bush's former advisers. The same Neo-Conservatives that told him the al Qaeda threat was fictitious invading Iraq was a good idea.

I condemn religious extremism even when free speech protects it. The release of such a provocative film reportedly made by an Israeli living in California on 9-11 is clearly an attempt to produce a violent reaction in the Muslim world which it did. I do not see where the embassy staff in Egypt issuing a statement condemning religious extremism is not standing up for our freedoms, but is simply a statement of outrage at such a provocative film. This statement was intended to quell anger at US, not foment it. The tweets I read in no way sought to justify the attacks., but instead tried to explain their reasoning for issuing the statement in the first place.

I, for one, will wait for more information before making any harsh judgments over who is responsible. I advise Mitt Romney to do the same. Too late, he already has spoken harshly.

I remember 9-11-2001 clearly. Many do. And I remember the country rallying around our President. It helped us get through that crisis. Democrats and Republicans unified against a common enemy through much of that Fall and the following year. Apparently, Gov. Romney does not remember that.

Romney screwed up plain and simple, but it was probably due to some of his staffers being a little overzealous in wanting to get their guy's statement out before there was an official statement from the WH. I'm sure he has staffers combing the news 24/7 looking for opportunities where Romney can inject himself into the mix and also appear on top of things. This time it backfired.

Hopefully he's learned a lesson from jumping into a situation with little information. Notice how his Republican colleagues had measured responses to the situation, and only after they had a clear idea of what had transpired. Even his running mate avoided taking a swipe in the hopes of gaining some political points. When I look at Romney's comments and his Republican colleagues he does come across as lacking political savvy.

Its terrifying how many people are posting without much knowledge of the situation. Please educate yourselves. Embassies represent the US Government overseas and the message they released was in extremely poor taste. The video that has created so much fervor was actually released by an Israeli-American in 2011. Its no coincidence that protesters in Egypt and Libya chose the anniversary of 9/11 to attack our Embassies, the video is just the excuse they used.
Why didn't President Obama address WHO attacked us, isn't that fact somewhat important? Is he afraid of upsetting fundamentalist Muslims? This is madness.

Do you think it is honorable to use the power of Free Speech to deliberately promote religous intolerance and provoke violence?

Whether we like it or not, every American has the right to free speech and can mock or condemn a religion. The film maker was not provoking violence. He made this in the US over a year ago and did not distribute it to Middle East. Do you think Bill Maher was "promoting religious intolerance and provoking violence" when he made his religious documentary mocking and degrading Christians? I hope not. Why is it a double standard for extremist Muslims?

Romney is desperate. No one who hopes to be president should attempt to convert this kind of foreign incident in which details are not even well known into political fodder for a campaign. The Embassy in Egypt was obviously under pressure and trying to prevent a bad situation from becoming lethal. They had every right to try to defend their lives and defuse a deteriorating situation.

This isn't the kind of free speech that our founders had in mind. With rights come responsibility and whoever made this cheesy and insulting film should be held to account in some way. I wonder how it feels to know that your country views you responsible for fanning flames and contributing to the death of four people? People jump all over Julian Assange for publishing some innocuous classified material that did no harm and want to prosecute him for it. What's the charge for starting a war and getting people killed due to stupid bigotry?

When informed that 4 people died, the filmmaker Sam Im-Bacile dismissed it as a "security problem that the govt needs to fix."

Time to realize that US foreign policy pretty much sucks right now. "We are sorry for offending you" leads to deaths. "We won't do anything" leads to militarization and death. "We are helping the rebels" leads to repression, loss of rights, and death. "Reset" leads to alliances, militarization, weakness in our systems and alliances, and impending death.

It's time Mr. President to call upon Egypt and Libya and say that until we think it's reasonable to resend our diplomatic core back to your nations we are suspending all foreign aid to your governments. How about vetting where we send our money---- somewhat?!? We are giving Egypt $1+ billion for submarines?!?! I haven't heard of a rampant need for Egypt to defend their waters lately. We don't have the money anyway, so why are we sooo interested in giving it to countries that clearly want our people dead and our way of life ended.

Mr. President, I heard you can't talk to the Israeli PM while you both are in NYC for the UN meeting- your schedule is too busy. How about some leadership and canceling your David Letterman appearance that day so that you can lead a nation instead of pleading for votes on Letterman. Going to bring along a saxiphone so that you can charm the masses? Maybe a sing-a-long? Disgraceful at best. I'm sure that you'll be shocked and dismayed when Israel decides to take on Iran in the next few months. Could have talked to them, worked out a plan but no you won't because you don't care about foreign policy- you care about face.

This is going to get really bad folks.

Ol_Doc Read your history and Clinton's apology not to accept the offer to get bin Laden. It was stupid Obama who ordered the murder of bin Laden and not his capture. When in his have you heard of not trying to capture the opposing commanders? Get your facts right and try again commenting.

Show me a credible source. Here's what I have:

Clinton: "So we tried to be quite aggressive with them [al Qaeda]. We got – well, Mr. bin Laden used to live in Sudan. He was expelled from Saudi Arabia in 1991, then he went to Sudan. And we’d been hearing that the Sudanese wanted America to start dealing with them again. They released him. At the time, 1996, he had committed no crime against America, so I did not bring him here because we had no basis on which to hold him, though we knew he wanted to commit crimes against America. So I pleaded with the Saudis to take him, ’cause they could have. But they thought it was a hot potato and they didn’t and that’s how he wound up in Afghanistan."

So the Saudis dropped the ball. You remember the Saudis (17 of the 19 9/11 hijackers) and business partners of the GHW and GW Bush.

Obummer is now on a level beneath Jimmy Carter. He should have ordered a tripling of the marines in the Arab and African nations with orders to shoot to kill. But then Obummer would have been ordering the troops to kill his kin!

Since you brought up both Jimmy Carter and history, let's go there.

1. What options was Jimmy Carter given by the Joint Chiefs when briefed about the Iran Hostages?

Joint Chief's answer: You can do nothing or nuke Tehran.

What was Carters answer: create Delta Force.

2. Republicans candidates have quite a history with dabbling without authorization in foreign crisis. Google "October Surprise" Jimmy Carter.

Nice comment about President Obama. What is your ancestry? Has this country ever fought a war with your relatives a few time removed. This is America...we're all originally from somewhere else.

First of all, if Al Gore was in the Oval Office we would have never gotten hit on 9/11 in the first place because Al Gore doesn't have terrorist friends that he grew up with, like George "Cureball" Bush.

Second of all, Al Gore was not an "oil man" like Bush and Cheney were, and Al Gore was not motivated by the thought of taking over the 2nd largest oil fields in the world which was Republicans' REAL motivtion for overthrowing the Iraqi government, and had nothing at all to do with 9/11.

Al Gore believes in clean air, clean drinking water and safe food for the American People. Furthermore, Al Gore would NEVER have lied us into war.

Al Gore is super intelligent and knows that burning fossil fuels is harmful to our planet, causes the melting of the polar ice caps, and causes global warming.

Triple Dog Dare -

Brush up on the facts. A fourteen-minute excerpt of the film was dubbed in Arabic and just recently released on YouTube. It is fairly obvious the intent was to foster anger.

Do you think Bill Maher was "promoting religious intolerance and provoking violence" when he made his religious documentary mocking and degrading Christians?

As a matter of fact I do. I wouldn't say he was "provoking violence" since the Christian religion doesn't call for a violent response, but he was certainly promoting religous intolerance.

Again, he has the right to say it, I have the right to condemn it. I would hope every decent person condemns speech that seeks solely to promote violence or intolerance.

We have to allow it, but we don't have to accept it or defend it. Would you defend someone advocating violence against the police or other authorities?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First I'm not a neo-con, I don't subscribe at all to our foreign policy it's horribly backwards. Second, if it looks like a duck and acts like a duck, then it's a duck and what the US Embassy published is an apology. It condemed the actions of an individual who apparently has made a very stupid movie and sympathized with a bunch of people who decided that storming an embassy and kiling a few people was the best way to handle things.

My problem is that I haven't heard one reporter ask the president if he agrees with the statement from our embassy, I don't think that is too much to ask considering his statement is a complete 180 from the first.

Also please don't Demagogue it's not needed. I have no idea why you literally threw up a bunch of bush crap on your post to me but seriously my post was pretty clear and to the point and polite please try and do the same.

I watched the Ryan video and he had such original, heart felt words for those killed during the Libya tragedy that he had to refer, repeatedly, to his transcript. I've noticed lately he does this a lot. Guess they don't trust him to speak for himself.

Ryan is not only running for Vice President but also for Congress again in Wisconsin. Hopefully Wisconsin has realized what a liar he is and he will lose both elections.

Romney today sure proved what a nasty A$$hole he is. Lately he's been getting real defensive and angry with the news people, repeatedly, and at the end of this speech he just walks off, no thank you, nada. He truly is a real arrogant SOB.

@ofcourse1 The mission to get bin Laden was NOT to kill him AKA assassinate him. They would have preferred to capture him alive. He drew a weapon and they killed him.

It's hard to believe so many of you are missing (or maybe you do it on purpose) the fact that this statement from the Embassy was NOT in response to the violence, but sent out BEFORE it started. Look at the timeline in this article-it was released hours before. The Embassy exists for diplomatic services. They did what they should have done and attempted diplomacy to AVOID violence. And there is no way you can excuse Romney for not only putting out a statement that this was Pres. Obama's reaction to the violence, (which is obviously was not) but doing so without knowing all the facts and in the middle of a vary volatile and fluid situation. It shows a serious lack of understanding of foreign relations and diplomacy. And as usual, they won't admit they were wrong even though it's right in front of their faces, AGAIN!

ITripleDogDareYou!

I don't know why he didn't addressed who attacked us, but to think he supports fundamentalist Muslims is downright offensive and discriminatory. This guy killed over two-thirds of al Qaeda's chain of command, led the operation to KILL Osama bin Laden, and has led the largest drone campaign in US HISTORY!!!!!!!! HOW THE @!$%# IS HE SYMPATHETIC TO MUSLIM FUNDAMENTALISTS????? Maybe the "race-baiters" are right; maybe the GOP is racist against Obama. After the bull@!$%# you and that idiot Harley Chic, I'm beginning to seriously consider the GOP a racist organization. And I once doubted this whole thing.

TNSEVOL
Do you think it is honorable to use the power of Free Speech to deliberately promote religous intolerance and provoke violence?

Whether we like it or not, every American has the right to free speech and can mock or condemn a religion. The film maker was not provoking violence. He made this in the US over a year ago and did not distribute it to Middle East. Do you think Bill Maher was "promoting religious intolerance and provoking violence" when he made his religious documentary mocking and degrading Christians? I hope not. Why is it a double standard for extremist Muslims?

That is where our freedoms conflict. We as Americans do have the right to criticize one another, but we must be pragmatic and level-headed when doing so. We cannot assume that people will take this with a laugh or a shrug. I think there is a double standard with extremist Muslims because in my opinion, they are still progressing when it comes to religion. It's not that I am anti-Muslim; I'm just saying that Muslims are in the phase where they are proud of their religion and will go insane over anybody mocking them. Christians and Jews have done that; we Christians had the whole Crusade and Reformation cluster@!$%# while Jews are nowadays becoming more religiously conservative (mostly in Israel). That doesn't excuse Muslims, though; I don't think we should ban all criticisms of religion. However, we have to understand that there are people who are very sensitive to this stuff, and we have to be careful when and where we criticize their beliefs. I mean, we're not that popular in the Middle East right now, and since they have lived in dictatorships for most of their history they have no experience with the separation of government and the press. That is why they are protesting the U.S. government; because they don't understand that the government does not control what the media does (at least not as much as dictatorships do).

Ganddy,

Boohoo, you hurt my feelings. Nothing quite like trivializing an offensive act (the film) and the Embassy response (designed to quell the anger of Muslims) that triggered the murders of 4 US State Dept employees. That is what you are doing. It sounds like you believe Muslims should suffer because of Bin Laden's attack on 9-11. Many Muslims were also deeply hurt by the actions of Osama bin Laden on 9-11. They said ours is not a religion of hate or violence, but of peace. I heard them saying it, did you?

Religious tolerance is one of our founding principles too. To apologize for an offensive film protected by our right to freedom of speech says we believe in the principle of religious tolerance too. This is hard for some of these newly democratic countries to understand, so we must go out of our way to make it clear.

Our common enemy remains hate and religious intolerance. I'm sure you agree.

And if you're outraged at the disrepect it showed Islam, were you equally outraged when a bag of pus calling himself an artist published a photo of a crucifix submerged in a glass of urine?

Jesus Christ; will you just get to the @!$%#ing point??? I am tired of the short comments out here; I'm been searching for someone who has an ARGUMENT to propose.

Since the recent past is our best predictor of the near future, anticipate 8%+ unemployment, economic stagnation, continued wasteful spending by the government, increased numbers on welfare, shrinking middle class, more violence and loss of life in the middle east, larger gap in economic distribution in the US, increased US debt, and more widespread and entrenched division between Americans along whatever lines du jour that BO champions.

This is EXACTLY what we are going to get under Romney. Recessions stemming from a financial crisis ALWAYS end up slow and protracted, since consumers are trying to pay off the household debt that they've incurred over the past 40-50 years. The only way to REDUCE unemployment swiftly is to create more jobs that spend money, and the way to do that is to SPEND MONEY. On another note, most of the deficits have been caused either by the Bush policies or the recession, not Obama. Obama had a $4 trillion plan to reduce the deficit, but you Republicans @!$%#ed it up because you couldn't dare compromise with him. And the reason why the middle class is shrinking is because of REPUBLICAN policies; their policies against unions, for corporate greed, and lax financial and tax policies that have ONLY benefited the wealthiest Americans while wages for the rest of us stagnate. If you want to reduce the deficit, pay for needed things, AND decrease income distribution (which I am surprised that right-wingers like you would acknowledge), you need to RAISE taxes. I say let the Bush tax cuts expire, cut defense spending, reform the tax code by creating more brackets and raising upper-class rates, and reform entitlements while spending money in the short-term to rebuild our roads and employ millions of Americans. Is that good enough for you???

The 1st Amendment right to 'free speech' has been limited in law for over a hundred years, at both state and federal levels.

FREE SPEECH IS CRIMINAL WHEN IT BECOMES "INCITEMENT TO RIOT." Therefore, Romney was absolutely, legally wrong in defending the filmmakers' 'right' to excoriate one of the world's major religions in a film. Apparently, he forgot anything he was ever taught in law school. Well, maybe he never learned.

No candidate for president has ever before criticized a sitting president as an international crisis is emerging because doing so is extremely dangerous to our national security. Romney shows he's no statesman, and lacks any dignity whatsoever, by leaping into an emerging international crisis before having a handle on the facts.

Romney has shown he cares less about our national security than about climbing over the bodies to score political points.

HE CONDEMNED THE STATEMENT THE AMBASSADOR HAD MADE WHILE THE MAN'S BODY WAS STILL WARM. The timing of the embassy statement is irrelevant. However!--if people were climbing walls into my sanctuary, you'd bet I'd issue a statement sympathetic to their grievances--if only to save my neck!

HE NAMED THE DECEASED AMBASSADOR BEFORE THE FAMILIES OF THE DECEASED HAD EVEN BEEN NOTIFIED. That's inexcusable and utterly despicable.

A couple of days ago, Romney was apparently told to move left--so he said he'd keep parts of the Healthcare Act. Then Palin and Limbaugh urged him to "seriously get aggressive"--and this is the result.

The man isn't even in charge of his own campaign. Who will be in charge if he's president???? The answer, of course, is those few billionaires who will have bought his election.

What the world heard today from Romney was that America may be willing to go to war to defend the outrageous, criminal behavior of a couple of people who insist on inciting riots likely to cause death.

The media-hungry pastor and the Israeli filmmaker have committed 2nd degree murder, which is defined as: "any unlawful act (here, incitement to riot) which is likely to result in death, and which does cause death." (As a retired felony prosecutor, I have handled such many times.)

Romney is a loose cannon--exactly wrong for our nation.

Again, however, I note how little genuine discussion occurs in these posts, and how much is just back-and-forth bashing with full obscenities. How can we move forward as a nation by skewering each other without any meaningful discussion of issues? The answer: we can't. C'mon, America! Remember "A house divided against itself cannot stand?" Think--who is served by this continuous polarization? Only the corporations trying to consume our government. Guess what? It's working out great for those corporations. Us? Not so much.

clywd - leave the reading and interpretation of Quarterly statement to those who actually understand what those mean.

Investment analysts noticed GM Cancelled a number of R&D projects for new models, Killed a number of hybrids, delayed R & D on replacements to current models, cut back on maintenance on, and delayed moderization of plants. The North American Sales increased 10% was the lowest of the major competitors, meaning they are continuing to lose market share. Despite the increase in sales, they did not clear much profit in north America. Where they got a surprise boost in sales on Opel, their European divisions. Amazing that they are making a profit in europe and can't seem to do that over hear!

GM cut now because they, and probably the analysts picked up on this, are expecting a huge expense next and are trying to build up for it. I wonder just what GM is worried about. Any ideas about what they are worried about?

I have to agree with this, while this might piss off some Americans if that were to happen here, but the culture is a little different over there when it comes to death. Remember it is "ok" to kill men, women, and children that are on your side since they get a free trip to heaven. The majority of the people that attacked the embassies were THE ONES that the U.S. government has been spying on, spending money, and wanting to kill anyway. You just missed a golden opportunity morons.

Yes Obama sucks, but Mitt is worse. It would be nice if I/we did not have to choose between a douche and a turd sandwich, but those are the choices atm besides something radical. We only have ourselves to thank for it too.

"I say let the Bush tax cuts expire, cut defense spending, reform the tax code by creating more brackets and raising upper-class rates, and reform entitlements while spending money in the short-term to rebuild our roads and employ millions of Americans. Is that good enough for you???"

I agree again, we should have done that 4 years ago.

We no longer have "free speech" in this country and there are many times we cannot say certain words without getting in trouble. While Muslims might care what a crazed pastor does, NO ONE ELSE IN THIS COUNTRY DOES. WE IGNORE HIM, YOU ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT WATCH HIS VIDEOS. WE HAVE MUCH BETTER THINGS TO DO WITH OUR TIME.

At least the Christians were the only ones to respect 9/11 and did not attack us or try to bully us into another war. If I would have been Obama I would have had a few words for Netanyahu. Like "WHO THE F*** DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TO COME HERE ON 9/11 AND DEMAND THAT WE GET INVOLVED IN ANOTHER WAR. Are you not the reason 9/11 happened in the first place? This is how you treat allies? You go for a powerplay on 9/11? WTF is wrong with you?" I would not meet with him either, waste of time, only a moron would not know what he wants. If I did I would have to smack the chit out of him, no need for armies and countless deaths. Someone just needs an a$$whooping is all, and needs to be brought back down to earth/reality like many others.

John Doe, the fact is that liberals hate everything that does not follow their template! They constantly try to denigrate Catholics by calling all of their priests child molestors, all of their teaching "radically conservative and terrible for women". They do not like Israelis, whom I totally respect because of their ability to pull themselves out of the depths of the holocaust, and create a virtual paradise from a kitty litter box! They call Tea Party members, who only want to have their beliefs and faith respected, "Tea Baggers"! The only weapon that the liberals have any more is HATE! But, they have this incredible need to have people who hate ALL Americans just because we exist to love them!

I have seen many of these liberal posters say that Romney had no right to say anything negative about Obama when he has not been elected as President, yet. But, I do remember Obama having a "European Vacation" in which he constantly denegrated this country and apologized to everyone he could! He has bowed to Saudi princes and had his wife try to hug Queen Elizabeth (a huge faux pas!). How about his Christmas gift to the British Prime Minister, DVDs which would not play in British DVD players! Obama has regularily stated that he thinks that the US does not deserve what the people here have created! The press has eaten up all of his garbage with a spoon! What would happen if Romney bowed to ANY foreign ruler, or said that we had 57 states in the US? They would crucify him and ridicule his voters as "red-neck, hillbilly, religious fanatics"! The liberals are beginning to see the writing on the wall that their days of ruling will be soon over, and, they are beginning to panic! We will see what will happen in November when Obama is fired and the Republicans take the Senate and keep their majority in the House!

Romney/Ryan 2012!!!!!!!

Romney is truly pathetic. He will say anything to get elected. He was politicizing the issue while the ambassador's body was still warm. Absolutely disgusting. Not to mention the whole apology angle is a blatant lie and, NEWS FLASH Mittens, Muslim fundamentalists in Libya or Egypt or any other country, don't care about the Constitution's right to free speech. Looking at Romney's apology equals weakness equals attacks another way, does that mean Bush was apologizing to Muslims before the worst terrorist attack upon our country on 9/11?

Finally, Caesar, please stop using the word "dystopian" until you look it up in a dictionary. It doesn't seem like you know what the word means.

Dan, you're reaching,, cherry-picking events and distorting facts. Obama never apologized and he did not bow in submission. Don't remember the hug or dvds and don't care. If we're going tit-for-tat, I remember Bush kissing the prince and Merkel's astonished expression when he massaged her shoulders.

Anyway, Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives all have insulting names they call each other (e.g. see MUW's comments above). My recollection is the name-calling actually began with Rush Limbaugh calling liberals "libtards." That was quickly and gleefully parroted by every anonymous republican or conservative. Although pundits and voters have piled on, you have to admit that Obama has remained one of the only adults above the childish fray.

Maybe instead of playing these schoolyard games republicans should make the adult argument that Romney alluded to but is afraid to take a stand upon...that America should have jumped into Libya and Egypt to push democracy when they had the so-called revolutions. That's a legitimate question worthy of discussion. It might be wrong but it's a fair question. As would how we pay for the intervention, whether America has the stomach for it and whether it would lead to more endless police actions.

The Obama-love media, as usual, gives Obama a pass and focuses like lasers on Romney. Sorry, the timing of the attacks on the Libyan embassy, 9-11, says it all. Obama has ushered in the Arab Spring, he stood quietly by while Iran killed it's protesters and yet when Egypt was revolting, both he and Hillary were there 100%. Obama has invited the Muslim Brotherhood into the WH while telling Netanyahu to pound sand because he is too 'busy' to meet with the leader of a foreign nation, attending Letterman shows and fundraisers are far more important to him.

Obama is the very best friend of the Muslim Brotherhood, he also made the Taliban 'friends' and turned his back on the Iranian people and the Israelis. It now seems highly likely that Iran has acquired a nuclear weapon (this according to the UN atomic weapons council) and Obama will do what? Probably friend Iran if his actions are any indication. The "october surprise' could be starting now.

ysolo, great point. Like it's just a coincidence this happened on 9/11. And, what can you do? Muslims try to have a peaceful demonstration about an affront to their religion and some nuts show up with rocket launchers. Can't they just have a peaceful Muslim fundamentalist rally without some nutcase crashing the party with military-grade weapons?

The movie had nothing to do with this and it wasn't a spontaneous event. Problem is, what are you going to do? We can't go to war with the entire Muslim world and Muslims don't seem interested in policing themselves. One of the obvious answers? Energy independence. Not drill, baby, drill because the oil will get sold to China on the free market. I mean wind and solar power and electric cars...heck, even liquid hydrogen (which is really the wave of the future after batteries have run their course)

I get tired of the way most of the media gives Obama a pass and then jumps all over his opponent which this election is Romney. We saw the same thing when he ran against McCain. Obama right after 9/11 made a appology has a senator to our attackers and then under pressure recanted those remarks. Its like here we go again. The Embassy made similar remarks and 8 or 9 hours later after Romney responds to those remarks Obama says he did not authorize those remark. Why did it take so long to respond to the original Embassy remarks which had been retweeted after the attack? Obama acted like it wa no big deal. He went about his business of campaining instead of taking care of the nations business. But then again thats been the story for the past year now. Yet his loyal followers do not care they will do or say anything to excuse his poor performance and behavior. Obama does not belong in office and should have never been in office. I pretty much put all that blame on the media. Obama has created a mess in the middle east and is making it worse. Since when do we stop holding our leadership accountable? Why can we not hold this president accountable to the same standards we held past presidents accountable? I saw a democrat on TV today saying he would be perfectly OK with taking the US over the fiscal cliff. Yet does anyone in that party care? I don't think so. They will not be happy until this country is in ruins.

Since the recent past is our best predictor of the near future, anticipate 8%+

Yeah, let's look at the recent past...

...the numbers for Bush's last three months. Between October and November, 597,000 jobs were lost; between November and December, 681,000 were lost; and between December and January, 741,000 were lost.

April 2012 marks the 26th straight month of gains in private-sector employment, for a total of 4.2 million private-sector jobs.

DJIA Dec 26, 2008 8515
DJIA Sep 11, 2012 13333

Dec 29, 2008 (Bloomberg) U.S. corporate earnings fell for a sixth-straight quarter, the longest streak in at least 20 years, as consumer spending on automobiles, homes and retailers collapsed.

May 11, 2012 Fortune magazine released its ranking of the 500 biggest US corporations Monday, which showed that they received a record-breaking $824 billion in combined profits in 2011, up 16 percent from 2010.

Mitt Romney has already hired all of George W. Bush's economic advisors, espouses the same "voodoo economics" that George W. Bush did and promises to decrease the national debt by decreasing even further government revenue from taxes.

So if we use the recent past as the best predictor of the near future, electing Mitt Romney will lead to another economic crash, even more Americans unemployed and another useless 10 year war (probably with Iran the way the war drums are beating) that will enrich nobody but Halliburton and Dick Cheney.

Nope, not the future I want for America - I'll be voting a straight Democratic ticket!

EEngineer... In case you have not noticed we now have 16 trillion in debt. 4.5 million jobs which Bernanke says he created 2.5 million of then not Obama. You will also notice the unemployment rates is snot moving except for the fact people are stopping looking for jobs which would explain the huge uptick in welfare and food stamps.

Second the reason that the unemployment rates is not coming down is because this president does not know how to help the economy create jobs. He is barely keeping up with new entrants to the market. ( BTW real unemployment according to Obama is 14.7%)

The ratings agencies are getting ready to downgrade our debt again. This translates into higher interest rates on our debt. This will make for bigger deficiets. We will end up like greece.

I find it funny that you are so willing to give all these free passes to Obama and not hold him to the same standards that you hold other presidents. We cannot continue to run up debt on our grand children. That is stupid and nothing but a cowards way out. I care about my grand children too much to do that to them.

Do the research. Obama is a president who was frequently unwilling to say the pledge of allegiance or even hold his hand over his heart during his 2008 campaign stops. Upon assuming the office, he initiated his well known "apology tour" where he apologized to Muslims for America's historic role a the world's policeman.

Ironically, those who believe the upcoming election is somehow about political differences between Democrats vs. Republicans are the saddest of creatures serving only as pawns in a cleverly cloaked war of ideologies. In the face of an overwhelming abundance of more recently uncovered information, it has become evident Obama is not a true American Democrat, but rather a closet Marxist whose dangerous anti-American and anti-colonialism agenda has metastasized into a pathological cancer on our society.

Active members of the single issue constituencies supporting him are on their own self-serving fool’s errand. Under Obama you may win the right for homosexual marriage, the right to murder the unborn or the right to live on welfare with no effort being required to find a job or improve you lot in life and live with socialized medicine. But, if the end result is electing a man determined to marginalize America at any cost, will you or your family truly be better off. The answer is a resounding NO! Wake up America!

As a result of his socialist agenda and reckless fiscal policy, Obama ratcheted up America’s Debt to GDP ratio at an unthinkable rate placing America in a very similar position to that of of Portugal, Ireland and Italy.

Anyone with even a scintilla of intellectual acumen need only glimpse at the impact "Obama style socialism" has had in Europe to bear witness to America's future under Obama. On the verge of defaulting on government debts, people are living under crushing austerity measures. Countless jobs have been wiped out; the official unemployment rate is 15-21%. Salaries have been cut to the bone. Pensions and health benefits have been slashed. Tourism industry is a shambles. Tens of thousands of workers have taken to the streets to protest a problem they thought they'd never see in their lifetime! In picturesque plazas, beggars outnumber tourists and protesters outnumber beggars. In front of Parliament, riot police stand watch to protect big spending socialist lawmakers from angry mobs.

Take a good look at your future under Obama! I hope you will enjoy your life living under a bridge! Think it won't happen. You better start paying attention to basic economics!

Romney is in a deep hole that seriously agitates the Republican base who never trusted him in the first place. He is so frantic in his search to find a way out that he jumps at everything that moves. He jumped on this too early on with intentions to blow a huge nasty fart in the President's face. We all know such acts sometimes back-fire on us.

Imagine standing on a national stage for all the world to see as you huff and puff for your desired affect to suddenly realize you only crapped all over yourself. I think most of us would make a sincere apology as we rapidly exit the stage. Not your guy. He stood there with his own stinky mess running out of his pants legs and covering his shoes as he steadfastly denied and ignored the mess.

I could feel sorry for him if he was running for 6th grade class president. Instead, it scares me that he and some others believe he should become the next President of the United States.

Here is what I know of the recent events:

  • This administration used military force without congressional approval to displace the leadership of Libya to allow the muslim brotherhood to take power
  • This admistration called for Mubarak to step down and supported the muslim brotherhood in Egypt both financially and within the world community
  • This administration sent a message on 9/11...a day when muslim fanatics killed thousands of our citizens, APOLOGIZING for our freedom of speech.
  • The only action that this administration has taken is to make a speech and "condemn" the riots
  • This president won't meet with the Prime Minister of Israel because his campaign schedule is too busy

This is not leadership. Obama has taken a back seat, he has diminished both the power and influence of our country. His threats are empty as are his words. He has failed to support our allies, and instead has been giving and gracious to those who wish us harm.

Romney was not wrong in his statement that this is not leadership. That the administration should be condemning the violence and intolerance of the muslim people, and not freedom of speech.

Turn on the news folks....look at the pictures. See how our ambassador was treated in a country that we financially and militarily supported. Obama is an utter failure. He is more concerned with criticizing his campaign opponent than doing his job.

Again, Obama has shown his inability to handle matters that require actions, not words. Like it or not Romney's statements reflected his ability to assess what had happened in Egypt so much quicker than Obama, if he ever did.

This is what we need in new leadership, not a leader that is more concerned with condemning Gov Romney than condemning what has taken place in Egypt. Also, a leader that is more concerned about OUR well being as opposed to his OWN agenda.

Bill Clinton, sold this country out, for the sake of how his presidency would appear. And you're living proof that there are fools out there willing to swallow it up, out of you're own inbred mentality, hook line and sinker.

For your information, and the rest of the inbred Democrats and Liberals (yes, I repeat myself, I know)... Bill Clinton was the hammer that forced Federally insured banks to loan money to minorities, regardless of whether they had the collateral or not. A purely Racist action.

The leftist media (I no longer call leftists liberals, true liberals no longer exist, they have been replaced by radical leftists) is focusing all their attention on Romney, not one is actually even looking at what is currently happening in Egypt nor are they giving much attention to the murders in the Libyan embassy. Nope, that's not the story, don't look at the flag burnings and embassy stormings, nope, let us talk about Romney.

The braindead, those who refuse to look at what is happening in the Middle East are ignoring a powder-keg and they do so because Obama doesn't look too presidential. No, far more important that Obama be campaigning than focusing on global affairs. We have an ambassador murdered along with three other nameless Americans, attacks on US consulates, threats of more violence and fearless leader is going to ignore Israel and slap his face on David Letterman, boy does he have HIS priorities straight. Rather reminiscent of Nero fiddling as Rome burned.

Frankly, considering the fact that those extremist Islamists overthrew a DICTATORSHIP, I could care less. At least the people got what the wanted; if that is an Islamist dictatorship, then we have no right to overthrow a government that they support. If they don't support it, than they have to fight the government and ask for our help; then and only then will we act. You fail to mention the dictatorships that PRECEDED these Islamist nations, and we SUPPORTED those dictatorships even while claiming to support democracy. I don't give a damn about what foreign analysts say; in the long-term, our global image will be repaired if we stopped supporting dictatorships and only intervened when other countries either ask for our help or it involves our direct interests. And even then, we should try to get a coalition of countries to help us out. THAT is the smartest strategy, the complete antithesis of the neoconservative "go it alone" invasion strategy.

Until we, as a nation, root out the extremists in our own politics, how can we ask other nations to root out theirs? Neither Romney, nor any other conservative, has condemned this extremely stupid and lying film that started this controversy. They all defend this slanderous bunch of lies as freedom of speech. Well, freedom of speech does not cover outright lies, no matter how much the right wing lies. If we want the Muslim world to condemn their extremist factions, we need to set an example by condemning our own extremist factions.

Let's start with so many of you right wing contributors to this very thread. This film is amatuerish to an embarassing degree. No "think tank", even the most right wing, would pay for this trash. The Tea Party, Newt Gingrich, Texas Republicans in general, on the other hand, I'm not so sure...

Quality and veracity have never been hallmarks of their rhetoric.

Well, you either have a state 'approved' religion or you don't. The Government (Republican or Democratic) either allows all films about all religions, or they start censoring religious films. I think most American's would agree that we don't want the Republicans or the Democrats to start supporting or banning films that they don't like or don't like, or that don't represent their views, or that are either supportive or are critical of any give religion.

This film may be a disgrace, BUT we need to protect free speech on both 'correct' and 'incorrect' literature. As Larry Flint said: "You don't need the 1st Amendment to protect popular literature, you need it to protect unpopular literature."

That being said, when I heard the initial press release, I have to admit - it sounded like an apology to me. It sounded like the US Government's first response was to say ''OH, we're sorry if someone in the USA offended you, please don't be mad at us, we're sorry." Of course, their intention may have been just to secure the safe release of the embassy personnel first, and I can certainly understand that as the first priority, but it did sound like an apology at first to me.

Sorry, I was tying to edit that and ran out of my 5 Minute edit window.... :)

I was trying to say that I'm not meaning to stick up for this film in particular, the film sounds like a huge piece of crap made by a lying nutbag. However, I also think that several of Michael Moore's films are filled with outright lies too, but I also firmly believe that he HAS TO have the right to make them, regardless of if I agree or disagree with his point of view or if I think his films are filled with lies.

This film may be a disgrace, BUT we need to protect free speech on both 'correct' and 'incorrect' literature. As Larry Flint said: "You don't need the 1st Amendment to protect popular literature, you need it to protect unpopular literature."

Mitt Romney does not have the right to speak for Americans today, only for himself as a citizen. Unfortunately, that is likely not clear to the rest of the world. To come out of the gate appearing to defend some idiot in California by way of freedom of speech is beyond belief. Please, Mitt Romney, until the day comes that you will be held responsible for the repercussions of your words, please stick to domestic issues so we can avoid airing our dirty laundry (extremist right wing talking points) on the international stage. Please.

Rick Santorum is a religious fruit cake, but he's head and shoulder above Romney. As misguided as Santorum's ideology and positions are, at least he sticks to them and doesn't flip-flop like a slinky going down an endless staircase. But even more important, Santorum has ethics and scruples, qualities thoroughly missing in Romney.

Even lap-dog Ryan displayed more appropriate behavior than his idiot boss. How desperate is one when you try to use the death of Americans to gain political ground. This guy will stop at nothing to get what he wants. He proved it during the republican primary and is doubling down in the presidential campaign.

Go ahead you right wing nut jobs. Continue supporting this egomaniac. PATHETIC......

US sends Marines to Libya after ambassador’s killing

By Bill Van Auken
13 September 2012

The Obama administration has dispatched an elite unit of Marine special forces to Libya after the killing of the US ambassador and three other US personnel in the storming of the American consulate in Benghazi Tuesday.

The killing of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, the first such killing of a US envoy since the death of Washington’s ambassador to Afghanistan in 1979, together with the breaching the walls of the US embassy in Cairo by Islamist demonstrators, touched off bitter political recriminations in Washington.

The Libyan attack is by all appearances a case of the chickens coming home to roost. Ambassador Stevens was himself very much involved in executing a policy that culminated in his own demise. The war for “regime change” that ended with the lynch-mob murder of former leader Muammar Gaddafi last October was prosecuted by means of US-NATO bombardment and the arming, training and financing of “rebels” that included Islamist elements closely connected to Al Qaeda. Now it appears that these same elements have killed Stevens.

While designed to install a puppet government subordinate to the interests of Washington and the Western oil companies and to teach China a lesson as to who runs North Africa, the war has produced what in the parlance of the intelligence services is known as blowback.

No doubt a contributing factor to Tuesday’s bloody events is the fact that the US-NATO war has brought no benefit to masses of Libyans, who are increasingly embittered over the devastation of their country…

The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. So all you quacks that have no religion and bash others with faith beware. We were founded on religion and will march all over your a**. I really like that. Maybe we can start here on this web site and see if MSNBC stands with America or against her.

“We are shocked that, at a time when the United States of America is confronting the tragic death of one of our diplomatic officers in Libya, Governor Romney would choose to launch a political attack.”

To prevent future recurrences of these attacks it might be a good idea not to make statements sympathetic to the enemy. I'm "shocked" that this administration is more incompetent than I thought not to realize this.

"The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is truly a foolish statement, I realize this movie that was being made is stupid (although I'm sure most of us have not heard any of it) one of the cornerstones of democracy is the right to say what you believe even if it offends another person's religion. The US embassy might as well have given the protesters cans of gasoline and matches with this statement.

A better statement would have been to acknowledge the stupidity of the movie but remind people that in a free country you must tolerate the opinion of others.

I still have not seen one reporter ask our president if he supports that horrible statement from our embassy, he has distanced himself from the comment by saying they did not approve the statement but no followup has ever been asked,, reporter's do your job.

We have a new generation of young Muslims growing in an era of hate over the western culture. Nothing is going to change if we continue helping radicals take over their government. The president of Egypt was a dictator and did bad things, but the Muslim Brotherhood is even worst. Obama is taking the wrong path, our intelligence warned about this danger, but Obama has a different idea. Obama is not a Muslim, nor a Christian but according to his autobiography hs father is a Muslim, his step father is a Muslim his mother an atheist , he move to Indonesia which is a Muslim country, he went to public school, he study the Koran there is any doubt that those experiences are different than a regular American, born and rise in US it had an have in his live and in his vision toward Meddle East and Israel. His position over in favor of a huge Muslim Center across the Twin Towers, the nomination of Imam Rauf , as his personal envoy to the Middle East, the same person who was the head of the Islamic complex , that create too many doubts. I guess is why Obama fail in foreign policy toward Meddle East, this is why his slow response to the attacks in Libya, where Ambassador Stevens wast killed by a mob , after Libya hour of the Embassy surrounded by violent protesters and the authorities of Libya and President Obama did nothing.

Romney did not made any mistake criticizing Obama.

Obama walk away from reporters telling that the statements of the Embassy in Libya where no official statements ??????

Obama is not ready to answer the call at 3 AM . State Department spoke woman agree with the Romney statement.

Now the whole media bias try to help President Obama , they are in damage control operation

I really like hypothetical, don't you? Here's one for you:

You are walking down the street of your hometown and you see a man attacking a woman who is dressed in traditional Muslim garb; both speak fluent english; do you:

    1. Go to her aid?

    2. Call the police?

    3. Cheer on the attacker?

    4. Help him assault her?

    Just curious.

and again, justin case, here's the actual passage from The Audacity of Hope that you keep misquoting:

Don't you want a prowestern government in Iraq? Don't you want our troops out of Afghanistan and both Afghanistan and Pakistan to tremble when the U.S. whispers?

You actually think that knocking off one or two taliban leaders every week is going to change their minds? Look up the facts Muslims have an average of almost 7 children per family. There are new soldiers and chiefs being born and taking the place of the killed ones faster than you can type.

To be honest - I thought Romney's comment was well stated but the bigger point is at least he had an opinion. Obama didn't have one until Romney gave it to him - I would rather have a delarative sentence from Romney - than nothing from Obama. If Romney hadn't said what he did Obama would have continued to pander to the Muslim community afraid of offending.

So the words were sharp and to the point - what about them was inaccurate - the fact that after almost 12 hours the leader of the country hadn't said a stinking word? Why when Obama finally said something his first words were to distance himself from anything that had been said from an Embassy.

As a "command in chief" (use that term loosely) he can't or won't make a hard, unpopular decision. it is all about image and how he is going to look to his liberal peeps and the muslums. Sorry when the attacks are once again on home soil I would much rather have Romney make a decision versus Obama blowing in the breeze waiting to get the poll results back on who he might offend.

Our pointless carpet bombing of IRAQ has recruited more extremists and created more threats to our national security than Saddam ever did. And you are oh so willing to do it again.

Since when has the GOP let a little thing like "it doesn't work!" stop them? I mean, just because the Iraq war had the exact opposite effect that they intended doesn't mean it was wrong! And we must do the same thing to Iran! Just because George W. Bush's "voodoo economics" trashed the American economy, doubled the national debt and caused the worst recession since the Great Depression doesn't mean it was wrong! And we must vote for Mitt Romney whose only promises are to do exactly the same things that Bush did - hell, with the same economic advisors that Bush used!

Republicans all suffer a severe disconnect from history. Let's send them all back to school to learn history this Fall!

EEngineer you make the same argument that can be made for the democrats. In cae you have not heard our country has a huge debt probalem brought on by the last 3 plus years. Obama has outspent Bush by far already. The crash was not caused by Bush it was caused by a housing crisis brought on by the democrats that refused to reform fannie mae and freddie mac. Thats a fact. The banking crsis was linked to all the bad debt in the housing and investment markets.

At what point will you start to hold Obama responsible. I am guessing like all democrats it will be when they have to start paying up. Obama has said this can be done on the backs of the rich. He knows he is lying. The problem is people like you cannot figure that out. If you are an electrical engineer like your name implies I would think you would have better math skills. Why do people say Bush doubled the national debt. Have you checked Obamas numbers. he did it in less than 4 years. I guess just like Obama we must blame someone else. Obama has no plans to reduce the debt. NONE AT ALL!!!!

Lets see, eleven years ago, on September 11, 2001, nearly 3000 Americans were obliterated in New York City by Islamo-terrorists. Eleven years later to the day, an American Ambassador and three other Americans were murdered by Islamic terrorists. What a coincidence that on the anniversary of that date Al Quada perpetrated an attack on America. I wonder if it ever occurred to President Obama that that Al Queda might try to demonstrate it still has a pulse by staging an attack on American interests. Apparently anniversaries do have significance in the Islamo-terrorist world. Surprise surprise Mr. President.

I wonder if Obama has seriously tried to work with the new Libyan government to achieve some kind of stability now that the Arab spring is becoming an Arab fall. I wonder if he has been able to convince the new Libyan president that he will support development of a democratic government, or support him at all. No doubt Obama is hoping the Libyans won’t talk to the Israeli Prime Minister about his record of helping out his allies. If he does he may be a bit concerned that if our allies don’t feel like we will stand with them its hard to imagine why the leader of a country so vulnerable to Islamo-terrorists would believe we would. Its time to draw a line Mr. President. I

ts time to proclaim who our friends are and what we are willing to do to help them. Its time to admit that killing Bin Laden didn’t kill a network that had metastasized long before his death.

Its time to stop asking Mommy Jarrett for permission to act like a president. Its time to BE a President.

.......that America should have jumped into Libya and Egypt.........

      A. We Have Had Enough Of Wall Streets Corporate Not Wars For Fun & Profit and Secret Support Of Al-Qaeda.

      B. Libya Egypt & Syria Is And Has Always Been No Win Situations and Obama Should Have Learned From his Mistakes And Left Good Enough Alone. Instead He Violated The US Constitution By Slipping US Into Libya Through The Back Door Without Congressional Approval.

      C. Now Barry & Hillary Want To Do The Same Thing In Syria.

      D. When Romney Complains About Their Inexperience Causing This Issue These UN Liberal Democrats Start Projecting Obama's Failures Onto Everyone Else!

Its like packs of Lemmings. Romney and Obama are D'd if they do and D'd if they don't.

First Romney - lets say he said nothing... silence from Romney. Then the media and the Obama minions would be barking up a tree about how he did not mention foreign policy at the RNC and he has not even got an opinion now so obviously he is not capable of handling foreign affairs. At least Romney held a press conference where he answered questions from a hostile media unlike Obama who talked and walked off.

Second Obama: At least the media is giving him a pass on this (like everything else) and not bringing up Arab Spring or some of his policies that have led us to this situation (and no I don't think it is the movie that caused this just a convenient excuse). However Obama is in a political dogfight and does needs support as commander in chief and not hammered. Personally, I think things might get ugly when all of it comes out. Supposedly from one report the ambassador was being carried by loyal people to the hospital, however, another report says the body was retrieved from the airport.

Obama's policy is a large part of why we are in this mess, however, I do agree that when we are in the fire we need to work together to find the door and get everyone to safety and not fight in a burning building.

Romney He saw a weakness and especially after being hammered about foreign policy and took it. He would have been criticized either way.

Journalism is a dead art... now we have various types of political lemmings.

Obummer has two choices and both are not going to help him.

A.) He can do nothing and prove the U.S. is a toothless tiger.

b.) He can violate Libyan sovereignty and blow his chances for reelection.

It sounds to me that Obummer is not going to do anything but talk and then Israel is going to force his hand by attacking Iran. Anyway you look put the fork in Obummer he is done.

The invasion of Libya is 100% Obummer's war. You can't draw Bush into this.

The only people here who get to comment on Romney avoiding the draft are those who served in Nam. It was a terrible time with so many dying. What was the number?..57000 and those who came back were treated poorly. DC as usual did not have a real plan. Biden being a little older was getting deferments that were allowed at the time. Romney had a high draft number one that probably was never getting called. My husband had a low number. He would have been glad to serve but had medical restrictions that qualified him as 1Y. He would have gone in in some role if they allowed but his medical condition did not allow for combat role. Honor those who served then and today.

Osama Bin Laden was not murdered, he was executed for his crimes against America while resisting arrest. The Nazi's were soldiers in a war, Osama Bin Laden was a terrorist - BIG difference.

Our embassy was NOT attacked by Libya, most accounts show that the fledgling Libyan government actually tried to repel the protestors.

So what is your solution? Attack a newly-formed country in retalitation for acts committed by some of their citizens?

Call it whatever you want, I am all in favor of a measured response that takes into account the underlying dynamics of the region. I certainly trust the Obama administration's judgement more than I do Romney's.

Your repetitive misquoting is getting kind of boring, justincase.

Military and in Afghanistan, which is more than I can say for Romney (who has 5 sons....none of whom are serving in anything). And, yes, I can talk about this since I'm a retired military officer myself. I totally respect our VP and the many years he has put in. His knowledge of foreign affairs was received without military service, and sometimes that's more beneficial. Romney, on the other hand, has NO knowledge and does not have the ability to speak on such matters for the U.S. Until such time as he GAINS more foreign affairs knowledge, he needs to stand down.

Obama is no @!$%#ing commander in chief of the armed forces. He ordered bin Laden murdered instead of captured.

So it would have been better for one or more SEAL team members to be killed in an attempt to subdue bin laden in order to bring him back here??? Should they have stormed his stronghold with stun guns, bean bags and batons?

One of the main reasons Guantanamo(sp?) is still open is because politicians refuse to let them be tried in U.S. civilian courts. They believe it's too great a security risk, and would give them a forum to spew more hateful rhetoric. So, if our politicians won't let the average terrorist foot soldier be tried in the U.S. do you REALLY think they would want bin laden paraded in front of T.V.? A prisoner of Imperial U.S.?

The ugly truth is he had to be killed, and disposed of in a way that prevented his grave site from being a holy site for present and future terrorists.

DRK-1183578 I have no idea exactly what Obama was referring to in the quote you posted, but I am fairly certain no one has seriously entertained any thoughts of Muslim Internment .....so what was the point in Obama's comment?

The Audacity of Hope came out in October 2006. Many conservatives were in fact pushing for internment of Muslims at that time; a survey done by Cornell University in December 2004 indicated that 47% of Americans wanted to curtail the civil liberties of American Muslims by, for instance, making them register their whereabouts. Michelle Malkin wrote a book, In Defense of Internment, calling for the internment of all Muslims in the US. It made the NYTimes bestseller list in September 2004. Obama was writing his book against that backdrop.

Since when did they control American values and freedom of speech. There are other ways. Should we kill their people when they burn our bible or flag?

YOU are the one that should be charged right along with anyone. Why the hell aren't you pounding on our government to DEMAND from their government that the perpetrators of this atrocity be brought to justice instead of getting that "I am going to die if we pi$$ them off" tingle up your leg?

Pick a side already - do you want the US to intervene everywhere, or no where? You want it both ways so you can point back to one line of argument or another selectively later.

It's funny, the protestors are not protesting the film maker they are protesting Obama. They are chanting "We have a billion Osamas, Obama".

These cowardly murders show the disrespect that Obama's buddies the Muslim Brotherhood have for Obama and his leftwing poopheads. All you liberal posters who distract, distort and lie about Romney, do you really think they are going to spare you because you apologize for our first ammendment rights? Obama needs to be defeated in the most massive blowout election. He has failed, he refuses to run on his record. We are far worse off with this incompent joker and fraud in the whitehouse. He is not at all likeable, that is a concoction of the lapdog media which also needs to be shorn of the prejudice and power.

That's not waht Obama wrote, justincase:

Nowhere but damn it if the hypocrites are going to do it one place for nothing (Gadhafi was scared $hitless of the US) then be consistent. They are hypocrites and it has to be because the Muslim Brotherhood has nothing to gain in Syria. Nothing like they did in Libya (oil) and Egypt.

Justin, Don't you ever check this stuff? Do you believe anything you hear? Just go to fact.check.org

"A second false quote has Obama saying he would "stand with the Muslims," words that don’t appear in his book. What he actually said is that he would stand with American immigrants from Pakistan or Arab countries should they be faced with something like the forced detention of Japanese-American families in World War II:

Misleading e-mail: From Audacity of Hope: "I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

Actual quote from "The Audacity of Hope" [pg. 261]: Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

Obama did not say he would side with "the Muslims," which could easily be read as meaning he would side with the world’s Muslim population even if it meant working outside the best interests of the United States. He said he would side with "them," referring back to his mention of immigrant communities and specifically to "Arab and Pakistani Americans." Furthermore, he was speaking of an "ugly direction" like the mass internment of Japanese Americans.

This false quote goes hand in hand with the equally false rumor that Obama is a Muslim.

Democracy is a messy business. It takes time for democratic principles to take hold in a new democracy(introductory Political Science course). Libya had been ruled by a crazy dictator Khaddafi for 34 years. In the aftermath of their civil war, we now have the beginnings of a democracy. These violent actions by a few Libyans (although foreign elements could be involved) should not end our support for their fledgling democracy. I hope they catch these terrorists, lock 'em up and give them a fair trial.

Sometimes tragedy defines who you are and what you stand for. Let's see how the Libyan government and Libyan people deal with this before passing judgment on them.

The reason we got attacked on 9/11 again is because our so called President elected by whiney assed moonbat liberals has no backbone. Also so because he hates this country and loves him so fellow muslims. Also I think the good teachers of Chicago should recall rahmy the union buster. Hey Barry isn't time to step in and tell fellow muslim emanuel to give into the union and give the teachers what they deserve rotflmao.

As for the rest of you conservative nutz, just recall that your guy, Junior received all kinds of warnings ahead of time, and couldn't be bothered doing anything to prevent thousands of deaths. Then you're going to try to blame a press release from the Egyptian embassy on Obama, even though it occurred before the attack, and was not cleared by the White House? You are all insane. Period. The difference between 1980 and today is back then Republicans had a REAL candidate who stood for sometime, a candidate with a core, a candidate with a backbone, a candidate who knew what he believed in. Romney is NONE of that. He's for/against/for/for/against/ for everything depending on who he's talking to, what day it is, the phases of the moon, the time of day, the season of the year -- you mane it. He's had 4 different positions on Libya in the last 9 months. Last Sunday he was for getting rid of ALL of Obama-care then, less than 2 hours later, wanted to keep SOME of Obama-care. He's against ALL abortions in all circumstances except when he what to allow SOME abortions depending on the circumstances.

I remember every election since 1952 and Mitt Romney is the worst candidate any major party has nominates during that time.

I am stunned by Romney's clumsy injection of politics into what is a National Security issue to be handled by the elected and appointed professionals of our government. His amateur efforts at playing an international statesman are embarrassing.

So sorry that Obama had to wait for his speech writer to write his words for him. Lucky Romney is able to think for himself and respond to such an autrocity immediately and from the heart. Romney knows the constitution and loves America. Obama wants everyone in America to be mediocre. Take money from the rich, give it to the poor. makes us all even in the mediocre lane and he becomes king. We real Americans don't want no stinkin' king.

I am a Proud American.. I am just disgusted by this failure of an administration and his kool-aid drinking worshippers. The man ( using the term loosely) is an abject failure and embarrassment. He is dragging our nation down with his failed economic polices, emboldening our enemies with his failed foreign polices and endangering our children's future with is free-for-all spending.

Just admit you made a mistake supporting this fool. I am man enough to admit I once voted for Jimmy Carter but then realized my mistake. ( I was 18 and in college so the ignorance was multiplied.)

Jimmy didn't apologize to ran.. why is obama apologizing.

By acknowledging a stupid YouTube video, and "condemning" or "apologizing" for it, the Embassy (which is part of the administration) essentially gave credence to the complaints lobbed by the protesters. Mitt Romney should absolutely have condemned such verbiage.

In fact, Obama realized the idiocy of these comments at condemned them himself.

The Embassy issued the condemnation in an effort to PREVENT violence, not as an apology or to show "empathy". President Obama did not comdemnthe statement, merely said it was not the offical position of the US government.

Last time I checked, it was the United States advocating that the Muslim Brothers take over from the Egyptian military rule. Because according to the United States, the IBs won the election. Little did the United States know it was installing a full Islamic Militant Government in Egypt that was pretending to work with the United States if it gets in. In less than a year, the IBs are calling for full demonstration across the Muslim world against the United States. Like Bill Clinton said " I don't know whether to laugh or cry" when he was discussing Paul Ryan during DNC Convention. If there is one government good at shooting itself in the foot, that is the United States government. Can't believe what I am seeing in Libya.

Didi, thank you for your response and thanks for your service - whether you agreed with the policies or not. I questioned and protested against some of the policies, but always respect those in uniforms who have to follow orders, and put their lives on the line for others and for their government's policies. So, I am sorry about the responses from fools, idiots and morons who don't go anywhere (including schools or libraries), do not read, don't think, analyze and feel. So, they say horrible things to their own soldiers while claiming to be patriotic. They want to cut government programs that would take food out of poor children's mouth and health care from veterans' lives...but they claim they are patriotic. Thanks for standing up, and I am sorry you have to put up with such fools on these webpages. I hope you stay on in the webpage in spite of the terribly hard harsh things they say to you, and about you. You are truly brave. Bravery is both physical, emotional and social. And you have all three kinds of courage. That is remarkable! Be well, and don't give your address or any number to any nuts on some of these websites. Some of their cruelties are not just in words. Take care and keep safe.

Did they say when you pass a stranger on the street to give them half of what you got? Did they tell you its just fine too have unprotected sex?

It's not the Governments job to pat you on ass and burp you when you are 3 months old and it sure as hell is not their job to do it when you are 30. We are always under possible attack, BUT with Obama it is a blank check to these terrorists to step it up, they know he is weak and will do nothing! Like during the Carter administration, when Iran took our embassy hostage for 444 days, our embassys are again under attack AND AGAIN we have such a WEAK incompetent president and the WHOLE WORLD SEES IT THAT WAY! .... well, all except the blindless, stupid, visceral morons that support Obama! LIKE CARTER, Obama has apologized for America! WE DO NOT APOLOGIZE TO ROGUE REGIMES, like Eygpt and other middle east countries!! AS to commenting by Romney.... Hell, someone has to lead, four years of Obama has well demonstrated he can't lead! YOU bastards that support Obama at all costs are doing just that... IT IS COSTING US OUR COUNTRY ! ! AND YOU are TOO BLIND and TO agenda driven to see anything else !!!

Give me a break. Obama is too young to have been affected by the draft. So he did not serve in the military. Big deal. The point about the others was that they were eligible for the draft and pulled strings and took many deferments to block having to serve.

Just wonderful vitriolic diatribes my "fellow Americans". You truly are shining beacons to the world with your collective name calling and bashing.

If we can't have civil conversation and discussion among ourselves, how can we expect to do it with the rest of the world?

It is 24 hours after the attack, if that. Where do you get the info that Obama goes easy on the murderers? Is he supposed to snap his fingers and magically make them all hang from the highest tree in an instant? Get real.

Obama administration: The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims

Obama campaign: We are shocked that, at a time when the United States of America is confronting the tragic death of one of our diplomatic officers in Libya, Governor Romney would choose to launch a political attack.

I guess you think that Romney should agree with Obama's love fest with the Muslim Brotherhood?

Tarzan. How about none? How many of those apologies have you actually seen? How about none? You can tell when people are desperate. They lie. I was watching the spin zone and why do they think people are idiotic enough to believe that stuff. And why are people idiotic enough to actually do it. Doesn't truth and facts mean anything. It looks like now that we have 2 separate incidents in Egypt and Libya and Romneys knee jerk reaction was definitely not presidential. I watched his double down today and thought he was going to actually say something in support of our country and sympathy for the those who died. Boy was that a dumb expectation. AFter examining it he stuck to his stupid story and lies. This man seems to be more inept every day. Is he campaigning for the end of the world and destroying our economy? Who is he working for. The highest bidder. He needs to fold up his tent and clown show and let someone else represent the republicans. He is nothing but a loser and God would never allow him near the White House. And Ryan the only unforgiveable sin is blasphemy and not believing there is a God above. So don't count on moving anywhere but Janesville and you just might get kicked out of there. I know some people there and they don't take kindly to your kind when reality kicks in.

Chip - Uhhhh....not even close. Romney attacked Obama. Obama didn't apologize. (If you don't have the intellectual fortitude to confirm this yourself, I'm certainly not going to waste my time spoon-feeding it to you.)

Oh, and as far as past apologies on the part of Obama? Politifact gives those assertions a "pants on fire" rating.

I think you are on to something. I watched the interview with Diane Feinstein with Erin Burnett on CNN - Feinstein, when asked if she thought Al-Qaeda might have been involved, thought perhaps but couldn't confirm it.

"I don't think we were caught flat-footed," says Dianne Feinstein on U.S. attack in Libya

What do we know about the attacks against a U.S. consulate in Libya, which left 4 Americans dead, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens?

Sources tell CNN that the attack was planned and a small pro-al Qaeda group who claimed responsibility for a previous assault on the U.S. compound in Benghazi is considered a prime suspect.

And oddly, it happened on the memorial of 9/11 - the destruction of the Twin Towers.

Obviously it was a 9/11 thing... duh?

But glass 1/2 full, the best al-Qaeda can do is an out skrit compound in a recently toppled country says a lot for it to be 11 years later. They really have been crippled.
