Subscribe to RSSFormer Amb. R. Nicholas Burns, who has served in both Democratic and Republican administrations, said he was “disappointed” in Mitt Romney’s reaction to the violence in Egypt and Libya, which resulted in the deaths of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three embassy staffers.
“I was, frankly, very disappointed and dismayed to see Gov. Romney inject politics into this very difficult situation where our embassies are under attack, where there’s been a big misunderstanding in the Middle East, apparently, about an American film, where we’re trying to preserve the lives of our diplomats,” Burns said on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports this afternoon. “This is no time for politics.”
Burns added: “I just think that Gov. Romney has, in a very unwise way, injected himself into a situation where he clearly doesn’t have all the facts.”
Congressman Mike Rogers, a Republican from Michigan and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, avoided Romney’s same level of criticism on the show, appearing to call for a pause in the political rhetoric for a few days.
“I do think there’s room for discussion after we get through these very troubling few days about maybe policies overall and those kinds of discussions and that’s probably a fair debate to have in this upcoming election,” Rogers said. “What we should be focused on now is that we lose a United States ambassador. And what’s key about this is we ask these folks to serve in very dangerous places. They are civilians. They are to represent the United States and just fundamentally try to avoid conflict. So the fact that these guys were deliberately targeted – they knew the ambassador wouldn’t be armed – tells us we’ve got some troubles we’re going to have to deal with, especially in Libya. This was a well-armed, well-coordinated event. It had both indirect and direct fire, and it had military maneuvers that were all part of this very organized attack. That’s concerning. That means we are going to have to make sure, working with the Libyans hopefully, that these folks are brought to justice very swiftly. We cannot allow this to stand for the United States.”
Rogers added, “I’m not exactly sure what Gov. Romney was specifically talking about. I think probably what you saw there was the frustration with a foreign policy that probably is a little out of kilter of where the governor would be when it comes to the Middle East. I think that’s probably what you’re seeing there.”
Romney foreign-policy adviser, former Amb. Richard S. Williamson, stood up for Romney.
"When you don't have the facts, you argue process,” Williamson said of Romney’s critics. In fact, he added that the “substance of what the governor said last night was true then and is true now."
Williamson also dismissed Burns’ criticism, deriding him as someone who first served under former President Jimmy Carter. But Burns, who rose to the third-ranking official in the State Department during the George W. Bush administration, actually began his foreign-service career during the Reagan administration. Burns has also served George H.W. Bush and on Bill Clinton’s national-security council.
Williamson said he believes the choice in this election is between someone who "apologizes" for American values and one who doesn't.
Here was the Egyptian embassy's statement, hours before its compound was breached:
The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.
Here was Romney's response to that in a statement last night:
“It’s disgraceful that the Obama administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.”
Today, Romney did not back down, saying it's "never too early to condemn attacks." "I don’t think we ever hesitate when we see something which is a violation of our principles," Romney said. "We express immediately when we feel that the president and his administration have done something which is inconsistent with the principles of America."
Romney also called the embassy's statement an "apology for American principles."

NBC Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd, the race-baiter who walked around the GOP convention and accused Republicans of tokenizing non-white delegates for the camera, is now condemning Romney for condemning a Cairo Embassy apology that the President himself would later disavow.
So, according to Todd, Romney condemning the apology is wrong, but Obama disavowing it isn't anything close to the same thing. And yet, this morning on MSNBC....
Todd read Mitt Romney's mind to concern troll him and protect Obama from having to deal with his own Embassy apologizing for free speech and then after the attacks -- doubling down on that apology.
Chuck Todd is not just a reporter -- Chuck Todd is NBC's Chief White House Correspondent and here he is -- through the magic of beltway pixie dust(?) -- reading Romney's mind, live on television!
Through this magic pixie dust, Todd not only knows that Romney was motivated to release his statement because of desperation, Todd also knows that Romney regrets making the statement.
Is Chuck Todd amazing, or what?
No so-called reporter has embarrassed himself more than Chuck Todd this year -- and when you look at what's going on in the media right now, that is no small achievement.
UPDATE: Romney just released a statement standing by his criticism last night. Methinks Todd needs to get himself some new pixie dust.

It would be comparable to our soldiers or military responding to an attack and then being subjected to criticism as "operatives" of the president. They are professionals and they do not deserve to have their jobs interfered with or their actions second guessed by politicians with ulterior motives anymore than our generals and military service members would deserve the same treatment. The embassies in the middle east are well guarded, probably far better than anywhere else. President Obama is sending additional troops because of increasing tensions. Most people get that.

People are still on the ground and he didn't care whether he was speaking with the full set of information. Would a true conservative stand for this? 10 REASONS WHY ISLAMIC TERRORISTS WANT MITT ROMNEY TO WIN
1) President Obama's sane, measured responses to issues in the Moslem world work against their efforts to stir up trouble and portray the U.S. as the "great Satan". They see Mitt Romney as a knee jerk President that will over-react, which is exactly what they are after.
2) President Obama has successfully and systematically targeted their leadership. Islamic terrorists were safer under a Republican administration.
3) Mitt Romney will say and do anything for Israeli support. Even turn the other way to Muslim targeted hate speech and call movies that demonize Muslim religious figures as pedophiles, as acceptable vehicles for "free speech"without condemnation. This plays into the hands of those wishing to whip the peaceful Muslim majority into a frenzied mob.
4) Republican presidents invade, attack, destroy and rebuild the entire Muslim infrastructure. Iraq and Afghanistan were rebuilt with US taxpayer dollars instead of using targetted and much cheaper methods to destroy terrorist bases. Having foreign troops on Muslim soil is a huge boost to Muslim terrorists as they seek to portray the US as Christian invaders.
5) Romney's energy policy will make the Muslim world rich and wealthy, causing a flow of dollars from democratic governments to Muslim monarchies, which, once overthrown, can put the money in the control of the terrorists elements. Bush/Romney's support of Saudi princes is better than Obama's support of Arab democracy if you're looking to overthrow a government.
6) The availability of weapons is easier to come by in countries that are invaded by Republican presidents. The fog of war creates many opportunities for terrorists to obtain weapons that would normally not be available to them. The US military leaves behind much that can be used again. Republican administrations have been more than willing to negotiate deals with Iran, Iraq, and other unstable or despotic regimes in the past, just to further weapons sales.
7) Romney will bring the war to the Middle East, rather than the terrorists having to try to hit U.S. targets. Republican presidents have ignored Presidential Daily Briefings that forewarned terrorist attacks against the U.S., GOP presidents have decided to attack countries that haven't attacked the U.S., and GOP presidents have protected the hotbeds of Islamic terrorism, wealthy Arab countries that have produced the leadership for Islamic terrorist organizations, such as Al Qaida.
8) Islamic militants see Romney as a weaker president, someone they can dupe into making mistakes, miscalculations, and remarks that inflame the Muslim world to accept their point of view, that the U.S. wants to dominate and control them, and force western lifestyles on the Muslim world. Romney's remarks about the Israeli vs. Arab economies is just the right amount of racism and condescension that Islamic militants need to boost anti US sentiments.
9) Islamic militants and terrorists see Romney as one who would weaken the US economy with trickle down economics. For them, a weaker US is a better foe.
10) Romney has been critical of the Arab Spring uprisings. He's happier maintaining the Muslim dictators that the general Muslim public deplores. To that end, he helps the terrorist cause and drives Muslims to extremism to rid themselves of these dictators, while at the same time feeding into the idea that the US is the "great Satan" helping to keep the average Muslim family subservient to the dictators.
A competent campaign would never have let Romney say what he did, and indeed would never have let Romney say anything politically charged when he did.
For all he knew, there were still live foreign service officers bleeding on the ground in Benghazi when Romney went up with his campaign nonsense (which itself was factually wrong by several hours).
One subtext of Romney's statement roughly translates into Arabic as "if you didn't like that Islamophobic movie, buddy, we'll make another one, so there!"
This is actually worse than George W. Bush doing nothing for 8 minutes or so after finding out the US was in the midst of being attacked.
So, having blundered horribly, the Romney campaign now thinks its a good idea to double down on the mistake. Thus, although the Cairo embassy statement was issued hours before there were anything but peaceful demonstrations on the sidewalk, Romney now says, "it's never too soon to deplore violence."
What.an.idiot.
It's also never too soon to move out of the way of the lightning bolt that might hit you a few hours from now. Yeah, that's it. That's sound logic.
McCain and Palin started to look this desperate in the home stretch in '08, and the air of desperation that surrounded their campaign caused them to spiral downward even faster. This has the same feel.
One thing that the US political centrists and even center-right like about Obama is that he is cool and level-headed under pressure.

Obama had an interesting comment today. It was basically that, as President, he has learned not to shoot his mouth off before he has all of the facts. Upon reading it, I immediately thought of his comment (fairly early in his term, IIRC) about the police being "stupid" for arresting a black man in his own home. Yeah, lesson learned.
I think this is one of the reasons why the American people are going to re-elect Obama. It delays for four more years the point at which we have to have a President learning on the job.
But it also raises an interesting challenge for our friends on the right, if not for Romney himself.

By cancelling his FL campaign appearance to make a formal statement, as if he were president and addressing the country, about a crisis that he has zero information beyond media reports and doing it just prior to our President addressing the people, Mitt Romney proved what a total incompetent he is. Never in all my years of observing politics have I seen a presidential candidate behave as outrageously and stupidly as Romney has today and last night.

I am sorry your party has moved so far from what they use to represent. Most of my family members are republican, many reside in Utah, they are not anything like what the new age republican has become. The conservative values they use to represent are now reserved for everyone else except them. Romney is a bad choice to represent republicans.
