RENO, Nev. -- The men at the top of the Republican presidential ticket largely set aside partisan campaigning today to focus instead on remembering and paying tribute to victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as well as the first responders and military members who stepped forward in the aftermath.
Here in Nevada, an important battleground state this fall, Mitt Romney addressed the convention of the U.S. National Guard, recounting his own experience in Washington D.C. during the terrorist attacks 11 years ago. He thanked the men and women who stood up to defend the country at home and abroad in the wake of the attacks.
"It is an honor to be with you on this day of memorial and appreciation. We remember with heavy hearts the tragic loss of life, and we express thankfulness for the men and women who responded to that tragedy," Romney began. "We honor them, and we honor those who secure our safety even to this day."
Romney's speech came after he received criticism -- from both Democrats and even some Republicans -- for not once mentioning "Afghanistan" in his GOP convention speech, despite the U.S. troops who are serving in that war zone.
Across the country in another state targeted by Republicans, running mate Paul Ryan had lunch with firefighters in his home state of Wisconsin after meeting with members of the Air National Guard.
"I have been flying into this airport for a long time back and forth from Washington to see my family. But when we hit the ground today flying home, this day meant a bit more because this is the anniversary of 9/11," he told roughly 100 members of the 128th Air Refueling Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard. "And I just wanted to come with my associates and thank each and every one of you for what you do every day. For what you do to make us safe. For what you do to make us proud."
The seven-term Wisconsin congressman stopped by a firehouse in his district to thank two-dozen first responders for what they do each and every day.
"This is a day where we as Americans need to think and remember the people who lost their lives and be thankful for those of you who put your lives on the line for us every day," Ryan said before sitting down to enjoy lasagna and salad inside the Oak Creek Fire Station.
In his speech from Nevada, Romney largely refrained from politics in his 19-minute address to a few thousand guardsmen and women here, with the name of President Obama never passing his lips. While Romney spoke of creating an American century -- a regular part of his stump speech -- and improving the Veterans Affairs department, he did not target the president or Democrats for explicit criticism as he does in more traditional campaign appearances.
"With less than two months to go before Election Day, I would normally speak to a gathering like this about the differences between my and my opponent’s plans for military and for our national security," he said. "There is a time and a place for that, but this day is not that. "
But Romney did make an implied contrast with the president on the issue of cuts to the military budget -- an attack that the GOP presidential nominee makes against Obama on the campaign trail.
"The return of our troops cannot and must not be used as an excuse to hollow out our military through devastating defense budget cuts. It is true that our armed forces have been stretched to the brink -– and that is all the more reason to repair and rebuild," he said.
"We can always find places to end waste. But we cannot cancel program after program; we cannot jeopardize critical missions; and we cannot cut corners in the quality of the equipment and training we provide to our men and women in uniform."
Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith issued this response to Romney: “The president agrees that we should avoid the automatic defense cuts in the Budget Control Act. That’s why he has called on congressional Republicans to help prevent them by asking millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share.”

Perhaps the Vascillator would like to apply that to the Affordable Health Care Act, that is keeping millions of young people on their parents' plans, giving insurance for pre-existing conditions, making prescriptions drugs cheaper and set to cover 30 million first-time insured in 2014.
Perhaps Romney would like to apply his words to Medicare - that would end under 2016 after he "Kills" the ACA. Or Medicaid that would follow suit. Perhaps he would like to apply it to Social Security.
Or to Education that Romney proposes to gut by 20%.
Oh, and Romney also said "We don't need" more teachers, firefighters or police, after 700,000 have been strategically cut by GOP governors during our recovery from a great recession. Usually those jobs are increased to help recovery.
Guess he plans on privatizing it ALL. That, and some really nice real estate = our National Parks.
Go take a hike, Romney. And not in our state.

Interesting that the federal government funds education, but the leader of that federal government is absent yet again, this time with the Chicago teachers strike, you know the strike where 400,000 students are out on the mean streets of Chicago. 'No opinion', says Obama.
Obama's good friend and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanual even says the strike may be illegal, but he "won't pursue it". Wow. 400,000 kids on the streets and Rahm-bo won't get a court injunction on an illegal strike. Rahm is showing just about as much leadership as his former boss.
Of course this entire thing is a dog-and-pony show, the best paid teachers in the country with one of the worst academic records will get what it wants - pay raises, better benefits, and no merit system, all paid for with new taxes, because Chicago is broke, unless Uncle Barack has some federal bailout plans. It is the Chicago Way.

I'll take a stab at it. I think that Mitt Romney looks at soldiers they way he looked at employees at the companies acquired by Bain Capital - as "assets" to be used and then disposed of.
I don't agree with his "Balance Sheet" approach to police officers, firefighters, teachers, or our military men and women.

Well, that's not entirely true. There may be no "troops" in Iraq, but there are about 5,000 "security contractors," many of whom are former soldiers.

At one time, there were as many as 17,000 contractors in Iraq, including the infamous Blackwater. Blackwater is still there, of course, but has now changed its name to protect its pristine reputation.
The last count I saw said that more than 500 contractors have died in Iraq. They weren't all just laying pipe and hanging shower fixtures for KBR.

Paul Ryan voted against the 9/11 First Responders Health Bill. The law provides compensation for illnesses for the first responders and residents of the surrounding neighborhoods, and has been expanded to include coverage for a variety of cancers.
Paul Ryan didn't give still steamin' sh*t about those who bravely ran into WTC buildings to save others.
Paul Ryan voted against it in July 2010, and in September 2010. He didn't vote against final passage in December 2010 because he's already skipped town for the holiday break.
Paul Ryan should not be allowed to show his coward's face anywhere near any 9/11 Memorials!

last i saw at politico they suggested a max of about $160 billion over 10 years with the new tax. On average in 2012 we are borrowing $3.9 billion a day.
the net is that we will get to save around 6 weeks of borrowing in the next 10 years with this silly approach.
why has obama not gone for real reform? he could have written a new tax law just the way he wanted it in 2009 just like he did with ACA.

Military so strong no one would ever think to test it." is his stump speech and a quote from the RNC acceptance speech he gave that did not mention the troops at all.

It's a direct hint at the Romney Ad he took off the air for today which points out Lech Walesa of Poland supposedly begging Mitt Romney "for American Leadership"
Romney's speech was VERY partisan political in it's words and meanings. It quoted his RNC speech and his current stump speeches. It was not a removal of partisan politics it was a direct political capitalization of September 11th which is disgusting. Is nothing sacred to this man? Has he no decency? He took his attack ads off the air and then on live tv attacked the president personally. So much for respecting one single day of political non-partisanship.

I stated (correctly) that the Republicans are refusing to compromise on legislation to avoid the mandated military cuts and stop the "fiscal cliff" - which has absolutely nothing to do with the jobs bill.
The argument is currently over raising tax rates on those making over $250k in exchange for spending cuts to meet the targeted levels.

Actually in a precedent setting move in both the House and the Senate the four committees in each that were responsible for developing the language, inclusions and exclusions for ACAPP were comprised of an equal number of Republicans and Democrats so that at the end of the day the acquiescence of at least one of the Republican members of each and everyone of those committees was required for the final legislation to even make it to the floor of their respective houses of congress to even be voted on!!!

While I give Romney and Ryan credit for their words, it was nice they mentioned 9/11 and the victims, nice they went to fire stations, etc. However, the time to discuss military cuts is NOT on this day of remembrance. Maybe FR doesn't call that playing politics but it was. Maybe Mitt didn't mention President Obama but the time and place to discuss military spending cuts was at the GOP convention, not on 9/11, not while remembering that horrific day. Appeasing his critics for failing to mention Afghanistan and our fighting men and women during his acceptance speech is too little, too late; doing the appeasing on 9/11 is one more failing of Mitt Romney.
It is as if Mitt lives in a bubble and does everything according to what he feels like doing. He wanted to mention the military today and so he did; never thinkings of the solemnity of the day.
Romney's words today about first responders like police and firemen might be deemed more believable if he didn't demonize them the rest of the year. His attempts to play to the party's right by accusing these same public servants as greedy and selfish union pigs feeding at the public trough hardly jives with today's speech.

Paul Ryan voted against the James Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act of 2010 TWICE. The third time it came up, when the Republicans were finally shamed for turning their backs on the first responders, he never bothered to vote.

Romney's campaign has turned into a real-time Shakesperian tragedy. The times we are all living through require compassionate leadership. Obama and Romney are intelligent, but only one has an intellect forged and strengthened by enduring real-life hardships.
Romney, in this election, is forced to portray a compassion for struggles that he has never lived. It is painfully obvious that his reactions and emotions are contrived, and he knows it. He has also surrounded himself with his longtime support staff that has never experienced struggle. In Romney's world the soldiers fall into a category know as the military. Thier personal strife has never been experienced by any of his staff, and therefore was never a consideration. They never realized that they were being callous. They had to be told! They still didn't understand it, feel it, but they recognized it as an important issue that others reacted to and began to deal with it accordingly. Romney's team views passion as a noun. America views compassion as a verb!
A sociopath is someone who is generally good looking,intellegent, will do or say whatever they think will get them what they want they also are good liars as they don't have the eye movements or other "tells" that suggest they are lying. Mitt Romney fits this perfectly. He says and does whatever he thinks will get him what he wants. If he has to destroy others or trample on them in the process too bad for them.
During the Vietnam war he tried to get deferment as a missioary in France where there are NO MORMONS. Maybe he was trying to convert some French people to Mormonism. He and Lyin' Ryan can't even agree on what lies to tell and how to tell them. What a mess.
We can cut our Defence budget in half and still be way, way more powerful than any other military ever to inhabit this planet. We should not be wasting it on unnecessary wars either. We need to pay for wars when we get into them and particularly when we start them as with Iraq and Afghanistan.
Spending cuts alone will not fix the deficit; neither will revenue increases alone. It will take a combination of sensible spending cuts and an increase in revenue to reduce the deficit. One way to increase the revenue is to raise the income tax on high income earners. Another way is to make sure the job creators create jobs and not sit on millions as if waiting for a second shoe to drop or something. Incentives to bring jobs back to America and fines or other methods of discouraging companies from sending jobs abroad.
As a vulture capitalist Romney, a sociopath, didn't need to care about the well being of others he only needed to care about enrichment of himself and his own interests. What he says and how he says it validates his sociopathic tendancies. It also shows just how out of touch he is with reality, especially considering how long he has been running for President. (longer than Obama)

This tragic day we all need to be on the same side, and show those who lost so much 11 years ago that we are behind them and our thoughts and prayers are with them,,,,

The only time the right wingers give a crap about the constitution is when they believe someones threatening their guns or they try to use it to make a point. The constitution does mandate we maintain the military for national defense though republicans use it far beyond defense more like conquest. The same constitution doesn't forbid aid to the states or most other functions of government so what's your point?
