Rep. Todd Akin, GOP candidate for the Missouri Senate, recently famous for his "legitimate rape" comments told NBC News that he's "totally in" and has no plans on dropping out of the Missouri Senate race despite many calls from leading Republicans to do so.
A cheerfully upbeat Akin said that internal polls conducted by his campaign showed a close race, one that he was "confident" he could win.
When asked whether the loss of national money from the Republican National Committee and right leaning Super PACs would hurt him, Akin responded, "people don't like the party bosses telling them to put somebody in after they have already elected somebody." He continued, "Everywhere I go, people come up to me and say keep up the fight, so I'm serving them."
Akin then drove his late 90s Ford Explorer off the Capitol grounds, on the rear bumper was a sticker "One Nation Under God" with an American flag.

If I were Aiken, I wouldn't quit either, because he's probably going to win. McCaskill is simply awful....the all time flip flopper!
Gary Johnson 2012! Gary Johnson will: End the Drug war by Legalizing Cannabis, Support Internet Freedom, Support Gun rights, end the IRS, End the Federal Reserve, End the Fed, Support Abortion.
Vote Libertarian!
The Republicans have a record of Selling Jobs over seas, Abusing their powers, Supporting Internet Censorship, breaking the constitution and Lying about a LOT of things.
The Democrats also have a Record of Selling jobs Over seas, Abusing their Powers, Lying, Taking Benefits away from the Army, Supporting Internet Censorship, Breaking the Constitution.
Barack Obama has:
Attacked Libya without Congressional Approval.
Signed the NDAA Bill into law allowing the Detention and Assassination of Any US Citizen without trial, a Federal Court blocked it in May but Obama is trying to Get that Unblocked.
Raised the National debt over $6 Trillion in His First 3 Years.
Wrote a book Explaining how he is a Marxist and how his and His father's dream was to DESTROY America (Book name: Dreams from my Real father). Google search the Book.
Killed HUNDREDS of Innocent people (Excluding the FEW Terrorists) including three American Citizens in Yemen and Pakistan using Drone strikes (Even more Drone strikes than Bush).
Tried to Ban guns with The UN Even though it's unconstitutional and Obama SWORE to Protect the Constitution.
Obama Claims he Supports Freedom of Speech even though he Hired Staff to Censor his YouTube channel.
He claims he Campaigned in 57 States.
Sued states he was SWORN to protect.
George Bush has:
Committed War crimes.
Supported Gun Control even though it's Unconstitutional.
The Patriot Act makes Growing your Own food Illegal, makes all Misdemeanors "Acts of terror", makes it Illegal to have more than 7 Days of food in your home and Many other things like that (Maybe 9/11 was a False Flag, they are greedy people, why not do a False Flag, blame it on al-Quaeda and Take Freedom away from the American people so they can have more Control? Considering the Patriot Act takes a Lot of Freedom Away and Bush was Very Corrupt).
Raised the Hell out of the National Debt.
Can't you guys Admit what your Parties have Done wrong? How greedy and Corrupt they are? Why not be Libertarian?
At least Akin has mention his internal polling that he think it is still close.
In MN, Michele Bachmann has been mum about her internal polling. But her opponent J. Graves is only behind by 2 points 46% to 48% within the margin of error. And more good news : independents are leaving Bachmann, and there is no third party candidate which received 10% in previous elections.
Looks like Bachmann is in trouble in her district for the first time in years!!!
So cannabis is the only illegal drug to consider? Specifically, how will he end the Fed and the IRS?
Bachmann wins easily. It's all about ABO this election.
F6Zman=looooooonytuuuunes
Thanks Akin - the Dems could use that seat. Good news on the Bachmann front - it looks like the Pray the GOP Away effort is working.
Why would he? His views are perfectly in line with the policy the RNC settled on at their convention. They opposed abortion in any situation including rape or when the life of the mother is in imminent danger.
Akin's strength in his beliefs, although not shared by all, is akin to democrats clearly shouting "nay" at the attempt to put God back into their platform, and is also akin to some democrats belief in abortion at all stages of pregnancy.
I did find it amusing when the Cardinal, in his closing prayer at the democrat convention, talked about the sanctity of life yet unborn. How's that for a little poke in your eye liberals?
On this, the solemn anniversary of the great Republican security failure known as 911, please pray for the repose of the souls of all those who lost their lives to continued Republican incompetence and "small" government.
Remember those who have kept us safe from "those who would do us harm" remember who got Osama bin Laden and Mohamar Qadaffi,....... and who did not.
Remember whose administration is results-oriented:
OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
NOW,.....MORE THAN EVER!!
Gop, you're seeking new lows today, brother. Clinton passed on at least two chances to take out Osama. If you're blaming Bush for Clinton's failures, then shouldn't we blame Obama for the entire recession?
Akin is right to stay in the race, as he did win the primary. His continued candidacy makes the powers-that-be in the GOP look bad for trying to silence him, especially since he exposed their true position on abortion rights (no rights at all) and their pathetic lack of knowledge about the female reproductive system.
All that remains to be done now is for Claire McCaskill to defeat him! I hope the good people of Missouri will see that Todd Akin is a backward old dinosaur who doesn't have the snap to be dogcatcher.
brianb, we don't assume Akin will lose...we hope he will lose. It's a close race according to the polls.
Heck, I have no idea how anyone in Missouri ever voted for that old coot Akin in the first place, but I haven't spent much time in that state. If Akin represents the general level of education there, you can bet I will never live in Missouri.
As for our confidence in President Obama...did you watch the two conventions? Did you notice the general lack of enthusiasm for Romney? Chris Christie didn't even mention his name until halfway through his speech. Contrast that to the overwhelming love and support shown for our president.
brianb...you're clearly bitter about something. My advice: go work on your issues. Romney's going down.
F6Zman
Put down the joint. Science shows that Mary Jane changes your brain chemically in a way that changes people's behavior, and not for the better.
It does have medical uses, but has to be controlled tightly.
Good for Akin. I truly admire a conservative with the courage of his convictions.
Check my post at First Thoughts where we will explore that concept a little more.
BrianB = rereg?
I'm calling BS on your Science claim. personal experience shows me that alcohol, tobacco, and abused prescription drugs are far worse for society than pot. There is not one study done that proves marijuanna is worse for people than other legal drugs.
legalize, regulate, and tax marijuanna use and we could open up a whole sector of the black market into the mainstream economy, and we would lower the crime rate in the process. nothing bad comes from it (legalization) counter to the reefer madness propaganda campaign's slogans.
spider-737231
hopefully there aren't enough morons to vote for the Akin moron
BTW, I'm assuming you are not talking about Clay Aiken because the moron's name is Todd Akin
Tzalaran
there is one reason why it will never happen: the Big Pharma Lobbyists will never allow it. Once you can grow it legally yourself, the Big Pharma will lose billions of dollars in revenues - no more happy pills that don't make you happy; they make you a zombie.
Where did akin get his sex education? Catholic nuns? or Pat Robertson?
Does he know anything on how the human body functions?
I really feel sorry for his wife...
commonamerican1
show me one person who sees abortion in a positive way, and I will show you a sick person. But what you and the Republicans don't understand is that things like the right to choose are to be left to a woman and her doctor. Not some middle aged guy in Congress who preaches about the sanctity of family and marriage but lies and cheats on his wife.
Tell me, what does Paul Ryan have against in-vitro? Should we stick all the people born through in-vitro back in a petri dish because they are less human? Why does Paul Ryan want to make in-vitro illegal? Shouldn't that be considered God's will since God creates all beings?
And I could care less what the Catholic Church preaches. Born and raised Catholic, I have seen more than enough of the Church's hypocricy: from a priest preaching that a battered wife should just "suck it up" and stick by the husband to child molester priests being moved from town to town just so no one finds out that they have abused children- and everything else in between.
Spyder,
I just pray you're daughter or wife in not raped. Oh wait, never mind it wouldn't be rape as far as the GOP is concerned "because she wanted it".
Bayllie, I'm glad you pointed out that the most liberal don't see abortion as "good." I think it's a horrible choice for a person to make, but I would never take away a woman's right to choose. Selfishly, because I don't want to have to support an unwanted child for 18 years, either in welfare or in the foster care program. Too bad all these "pro-lifers" aren't offering to support the mom and child for the next 19 years. Problem solved.
akin is a brain dead dinosaur lost in the fifties. cant wait to see him lose.
Judy1217
yes, abortion is a horrible thing and thank God I have never been forced to be in that position. That said, I will not judge women and men who have to face that choice. It's between them and their God (if they believe in one). It is not my place to force my beliefs on anyone. I can only choose what's right for me and I wish these hypocrites would stay out of people's bedrooms!
And yet, you'll have no problem voting for the king of flip-flopping, Mr. Romney. It's really difficult to see exactly where he stands on the issues. . .
But I do agree with you on Akin--glad he's staying in; he makes it so much easier for McCaskill to win.
Akin should not quit.
Someone should have slapped the crap out of Karl Rove and Rince Preibus.
They're blowing it. No one even remembers what he said and McCaskill sucks the big one
Go ahead...slap the crap out of them. That would be a refreshing change from lockstep, blind obedience to the evil puppet masters of the GOP.
Oh,I remember just fine...still waiting for my vagina to show me it's ninja moves-you know,so in case I am ever raped I can rest assured that it will just 'shut it down' down there.I don't really like to leave those types of 'medical' things up to chance.
Let Reince and Rove blow it. If they do that means a new party will form before the next Presidential election.
Karl Rove, Rince Preibus, Rush Limbaugh, Grover Norquist and the Koch Bros apparently RUN the GOP. Too bad - they're not working in the best interest for average Americans.
The real GOP is dead. When will they learn that Repubs don't want to follow men who weren't elected by the people but self-appointed and self-serving!
cons, don't kid yourself 51% of the US population remembers quite well what fell out of akins mouth, I certainly don't believe Mo. women are all farm dolts, St. Louis, Kansas City have their fair share of educated women. Lake of the Ozarks crowd do not reign supreme in Mo.
Obama 2012
You go Todd! Keep your narrow minded beliefs, and Claire will win this easily!
Another result of the lovely conundrum the GOP gets in since they courted the religious fundies and the 'Flat Earth Society' wing of American society.
One day the GOP establishment will figure out that pushing these whack-jobs out of the party and rebuilding it with moderate conservatives and moderate democrats who believe in responsible and rational government, while respecting the personal and private lives that are of no business of anyone else's, will be the ticket to win national elections.
People in the real world might also then be inclined to listen to their ideas since they will not be tainted by the absurdities of religious nut-cases insisting on using the power of government to enforce their version of an American theocracy.
JPArch,
I think it is the whack jobs who have pushed out all the moderates in the Republican party.
They are the only ones left and they will all melt like wax in the hot sun.
I agree with the sentiments, the implosion becomes a purge...but do we wind up with two parties or three? Polls of likely Republican voters in Ohio and North Carolina were asked who should get more credit for killing Osama Bin Laden (Obama or Romney?) - 15% said Romney and 46% weren't sure (N.C was 56%) - these are the people who are bringing down the party and I doubt they will be so kind as to entirely melt away.
Republicans are running scared from the demographic changes sweeping the country. They can't handle the end of 'Old White Man' rule.
The writing is on the wall, GOPers. Either get a reality-based, pragmatic platform together, a program that includes everyone, or go the way of the dinosaur.
I'm sick of the lies, hypocrisy and bigotry of your party. This is America! Your power game will destroy democracy as we know it... unless your fearful, brainwashed minions wake up and quit drinking your poison kool-aid.
looks like we are taking America back from the home schoolin crowd!
Representative Akin,
If you are reading this, it is my prayer to you to "stay the course" and stay in there and fight that evil Claire McKaskill until you prevail on Nov. 6, 2012! Everybody knows that a woman cannot get pregnant if she is raped....but does not enjoy being raped.
STAY IN THERE AND FIGHT up to the minute when the polls close and you and you will prevail.
Stand up for your Teaparty and Religious Right principles!
LTC Rattus, USA, ret.
This is either a farce, or you are insane.
The only 'principles' of the Teavangelical crowd is willful ignorance, backed up solely by the arrogance of belief, yet devoid of all rational intelligence, fact, reason, or evidence...on virtually any matter or subject they bleat-on about.
This faction of the electorate deserves nothing less than scorn and derision for making America suffer with the fools they've managed to get elected. The damage they've caused is almost incalculable.
Not to mention that the fundies have been the downfall of the GOP since the late 70's, and let's hope they are blown-out of as many elective offices as possible before they destroy this country.
We are not a theocracy.
Arch,
My post was directed to Congressman Akin. Before you judge me too harshly read a couple of my other posts. I hope that this woman hating, religious wrong, teabagger POS stays in to help Claire win.
Rat
yeh, Lt colonel
During the battle to end the abortion called DADT I met a retired two star general in DC, at a protest
He told me there are still "pockets in the army that think that women shoujldnt serve and blacks should be segregated He said one of them was a general Boykin
who was just forced to retire and went to work for the hate group FRC
here's the skinny on Tony Perkins, the pres of the FRC...........
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/picture-worth-thousand-memories
As I mentioned....I was hoping it was ironic farce....which apparently it was.
Rat...if your response is true, then do not take my comment seriously since it was not directed at you.
That said, I fully believe what I wrote. Seen and spent too many hours wasted listening to the raging lunacy of a handful of teavangelicals. Frightening is putting it lightly.
I cannot help but insult them. Their 'beliefs' tend to invite it.
LOL! Try spending 20 years in the Army! Although the Army is clamping down on a lot of these people because the Army is dedicated to protecting the nation and our Constitution. Our nation is more diverse and it follows suit that the Army is more diverse and is a microcosm of American society.
The right wing, teabaggers, xenophobes, racists, and Christian Taliban, if you will, "all found a home in the GOP" and are going to completely destroy the party of Dwight D. Eisenhower.
It's such a shame.
Rat
Stanley,
I retired in 12/09. By then DOD had realized that the Army and the Air Force had "severe and substantial problems along these lines." The Marine Corps, not so much, as it is so small. The Navy very ethnically diverse and living in the close quarters that they do onboard ships....this kind of crap cannot be tolerated.
When I graduated from West Point in '89..........the Army was very much as you had described. Although I graduated from "the trade school" with a degree in civil engineering...I was an infantry officer. I have to admit that after my 6 years of mandatory service and Desert Shield and Desert Storm......I tried like hell to get a GS engineering job at baseops at West Point and stay in the USAR or the National Guard for my 20 year letter.
Such Department of the Army Miltech jobs were "hard to get." Hindsight is 20/20. I don't know why I did not try elsewhere in the Fed. Govt. I did have a job offer in civil engineering at a Marine Corps logistical base, but there were no spaces on the TBA (table of allowances and distribution for me to find a reserve unit to drill in that was remotely withing commuting distance" So that was a no go. Because I was an infantry and combat engineer officer......I had no experience in either civil or environmental engineering. I had passed 6 years before the EIT (engineer in training) but never had any civil engineering experience.....and I did not really care for civil engineering anyway.
When you enter West Point at 17 years of age and go through all 4 cadet years and then serve 6 years of active duty and participate in a war........my orientation toward the civil. world was, if you will, "not where it should have been."
However, during the first say 12 years of my Army career I saw a hell of a lot of neocons, neonazis, Southern type racists and a few Black racists too. Every brigade has a coterie of bible thumpers and Christian fanatics.....that slowly began to be constrained because of the advent of dogtags with under religious preference: Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Wiccan, Sikh, None, and "IDGAF" (I don't give a f uc k) The bible thumpers really resisted and were very reactionary. I hate to think how they are now braying non-stop about Gays and Lesbians! However, there were always Gays and Lesbians in the Army. Some of them were the toughest infantry types that I had ever seen...so nobody messed with any officer or nco with a Combat Infantry Badge and a Blue Infantry Rope.
Now, I am retired and in my second year of a Master of Social Work graduate program and I want a second career (non-govt.) helping disabled vets and their families. I relate to disabled veterans....and their families .....as I was a Soldier like them. Lastly, there are also lots of Democrats in the Army. Thank you for the kind words.
OBAMA-BIDEN 2012!
Rat
Rat, you sound like a good guy.
Thank you for your service to our country! On today of all days, we need to express our gratitude for those like you. It's nice to know that there are some clear-headed, open-minded people in our military.
Best of luck in your new career...it's very important work.
Good luck to you, Rat. It is a pleasure to read your words of reason on this day.
Rattus, Impressive bio., thank you for keeping the US safe through your service. I salute you sir!
My dad just turned 92, Maj. retired, Army AirCorp/USAF WWII and Korean vet has often times repeated some of the same things you have described in your post, that is when we could get him to speak of his war experiences. My husband Vietnam vet, 3 tours, 4 Purple Hearts, LRRP, tells me that racism and fanaticism was rampant during his tours, and it was a daily battle with the superiors to get some of the worst offenders under control; beatings, killings, discrimination in promotions, said it was shameful.
It would apper that the same factions that existed in my dad's and husbands day are now running the GOP, pops, died in the wool Eisenhower admirer is voting for the President and so is my hubby. GOP lost two of their, at one time, staunchest allies because of the hate and mismanagement of w's reign.
Obama 2012
@ Rat,
USMC
22 Yrs. Retired.
Obama/Biden 2012
Can no one in the Romney campaign not put this certifiable lunatic out of his misery, oh wait he doesn't even know this.
Keep the MF. Then some reasonable dem will win.
Akins conscious is obviously trying to tell us something.
He should be investigated for every unsolved rape. BTW he's evangelical prsby - you might as well call him southern baptist for his level of hate of women.
The southern baptists and the catholic church are the most anti gay in America
They are also the most anti women.
Hum, here is the truth, he isn't the only creep that thinks that way. The Gop, thinks the the same way, and they are upset that this creep finaly let this spew from his lips.
Yes they are. they are also anti-children.
rattus
post 9.1
You lost o good bit of your credibility there. Calling pro-life anti children is really warped logic.
They are not Pro-life, they are anti-abortion. anti-abortion means that they want to end abortion on all preganancies, no matter the reason. Pro-life would mean that they want to support life through all its phases, not cut funding to medicaid which subsidizes health care for the poor kids, cut funding to education so those same kids that were forced to be born have no chance at improving their lot in life, and cut all other programs that would help to support those who were forced to be born.
If you're not going to assist those who you force to be born, how can you say you are pro-life, you're just anti abortion.
Go Obama!
About 80% of all rapes are men-on-men, and most of those occur in prisons. Maybe Akin should be put in a prison to see it it is ligitimate rape, even though he doesn't get pregnant.
If Akin got slapped in prison.......the other inmates would punk him out faster than an AK 47 round hits the walls of a mud hut.
Tired, Rattus, I don't think bubba would care to much for an old gnarly elephants behind, but you never know, Todd could get lucky.
Obama 2012
Parrot,
You're right. They might not boink him. However, they might find him the source of entertainment.
Tzlaran,
Thank you.
Rat
Why should Akin quit? The idiots coaxed him to come out of his shell, and now they want him to shrink back into it. His only fault, as seen through the prism of the GOP, is that he was too honest regarding the strange religious ignorance that they all love. Let's face it, the GOP believes that global warming is a hoax, that evolution is a hoax, and that birth control only coddles slutty women. (Although what the slutty men would do without the slutty women is a problem they haven't thought through - except they know that the men cannot be gay under any circumstances - better dead than gay.)
When half of your party thinks that humans rode on dinosaurs and that the world began only a few thousand years ago, how difficult is it to believe that a virtuous rape victim (as opposed to a slutty rape victim) can shut down her reproductive tract? Ernest Angley would tell the women to put their hands on the television screen and cast those babies out. Poor Mr. Akin is just more honest than some of his Republican cousins. Let the sun shine in on what the party's secret majority views are. Let Akin carry the torch. He's got a little light and he's gonna let it shine. More incest babies will only make that light a little brighter.
Akin is just a symptom of Tea Party fever.
Akin is a face of the Teaparty, the Religious Wrong, and the reissue of the KKK.
And you are the face of the communist party, the Godless party of boos, and Nazis
Your mixing metaphors again Joe, the Nazi's were right wing and Hitler was a catholic.
What the heck is the "Godless party of boos"?
boos?
Obama 2012
Blue unicorn,
"boos" is a Southern synonym for the "nword!"
It is a forbidden word in the Army, however, it is commonly used in private Army settings. It is also a "GOP/Teaparty "code word."
LTC Rattus
Missouri used to pride itself on being a reasonable, centrist state. Will they reaffirm that slipping position by rejecting Akin, or utterly shred their past respectability by embracing him? Your choice, Missouri. You are at a crossroads. Will you turn back, away from extremism and towards rationality, or will you cast yourself as an irrelevant deep south wannabe?
My part of Missouri is, unfortunately, full of redneck hillbillys.
So you must be a communist without a job!
boos?
Obama 2012
To put it simple: you democrats are one bunch of sickos. You know nothing about the tea party and your boy in the White House is a liar. A true Chicago politician. Course all you care about is what you can get for free from the government. Forget what the democrats hero said: ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. But thats the old party, right?
Is that a fact?
Naw, it's not a fact. rusty-jarhead is just tinklin' in the wind. It's the standard "rightie" BS when a cogent answer is out of reach. I've seen his posts before, and this is his usual response.
rusty, sad post, let go of some of your anger and apparent hatred, bad for the soul, karma is a nasty beast.
Obama 2012
He must not get out much or he is only talking to men, which is entirely possible after those comments he made.
poor rusty jarhead, he stays up all night worrying that his Mormon draft dodger is loosing. Dude, prisons are full of home schooled people like yosef.
we can get you off the meth and back into society, but you gotta get off the drugs.
Clare McCaskill is clever like a fox!
Before the primary, she ran just one ad against her three republican opponents: it went like this: "Todd Akin - True Conservative? or Too Conservative for Missouri? (followed by a list of his looney beliefs)". Well, all three Republicans were trying to establish that they were the true conservative. Once Claire anointed Todd Akin with that title, he managed to win the primary. I think her ad might have swung the vote, and so she effectively picked the looniest of the three candidates as her opponent in November.
By the way, did you all catch the great remark by Paul Krugman on Sunday's "This Week with George Stephanopolous": "Republican Party is the party of old white guys - who talk to chairs". LOL - thanks, Paul!
Missouri is a different state and Akin may just survive the national attack as the people of Missouri close ranks around one of their own. McCaskill is not a beloved politician in Missouri and her devotion to this president has not helped her. Should be really close........
Akin within 1 point of McCaskill!
Why should he quit....he was selected by majority of Missouri GOP voters so obviously he expresses their views.
Just because GOP "leaders" want to secure that seat for GOP instead of wanting to represent Missouri shouldn't sway Akins.
Besides, unfortunately, I think he will win anyway.
Actually, Akin did NOT win a majority in the primary!
Among the three republican candidates, Akin got 36% of the vote, and the other two each got around 30%. So he was the choice of only a third of the voting republicans (the most conservative third).
Akin is just waiting for the Koch Bros to "pony up" $50 million for his "campaign", then he will drop out... ;-)
Republicans are very good at hostage taking and extortion...
Old Claire is taking money from George Soros. Hmmmm
And of course you have a source for that little tidbit Joe??
joe, immigrant makes good, and gives back to the country that helped make his fortune, you vilify that. shame on you.
Obama 2012
Akin needs a good paddle... He's about to go over a waterfall.
I live in missouri get up every morning go to work, pay my taxes, not on any gov programs and I can tell you I would never vote for the crazy akin.
vote akin so we can go back to 17 century when women had no wrights over there bodyes white women & black girls were treated good
I remember the good old days when Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman were the only two registered village idiots, now every Republican is after that Title.
I remember the good old days when Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann were the only registered village idiots now every Republican is after that job title.
Love it. You are absolutely correct.
