Ads: A state-by-state breakdown of who's spending where

Below is a state-by-state breakdown of who is spending where on television and radio ads in this presidential campaign, beginning the week of March 19th, based on a First Read analysis of data provided by ad-tracking firm SMG Delta.

A few takeaways:

Clearly, and not surprisingly, the campaigns see Florida, Ohio, and Virginia as critical. They are far and away Nos. 1, 2, and 3 on the list.

Despite the huge influx of money from outside groups, only in Virginia are Romney and allies out in front. In Florida and Ohio, the Super PACs are chipping in just enough to be on par with Obama.

The Obama campaign came out with this ad Sept. 3 focusing on Romney's tax plan.

North Carolina is No. 4 on the list, and Team Romney has spent a lot more than Team Obama there. That’s interesting considering the state should be "Lean Romney." Team Romney has had had to spend a lot of money there, which may have been the Obama campaign's goal at the end of the day.

By contrast, the “expand the map” Romney states -- places like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan -- are much further down the list.

Romney's latest ad - this one running in Wisconsin and focuses on his speech at the Republican National Convention. It's his first ad to run in Wisconsin and hasn't shown up yet in ad-spending data

There’s plenty more in here, like where unions like the SEIU are playing (Florida and Nevada) and where Planned Parenthood is (Virginia in particular, and also Florida and Iowa).

But, of course, that spending pales in comparison to what the Crossroads groups, the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity, and others, are spending everywhere, especially -- again -- Florida and Virginia.

Ad spending by state:

1. Florida - $117.4 million
2. Ohio - $112.1 million
3. Virginia - $85.7 million
4. North Carolina - $56.5 million
5. Colorado – $54.2 million
6. Iowa - $46.6 million
7. Nevada - $38.2 million
8. New Hampshire – $25.3 million

10. Wisconsin - $8.1 million
11. Michigan - $8 million
12. Minnesota - $3.2 million

Well, it probably is. And Karl Rove.

And the breaking of the unions, and Citizens United.

By 2014, the coup will be complete.

I hope you're happy, Handyman.

Does anyone realize that the GOP has passed a bill in the House of Representatives to eliminate the caps on skilled foreign workers coming into this country?

It is now in the Senate. We need to speak up NOW and put a stop to this garbage! These are American jobs!

The United States House of Representatives passed this week a bill — House Resolution 3012 — which favors highly skilled workers by removing country-specific caps on immigrant engineers, computer scientists and other professionals.

House representatives voted 389 to 15 in favor of HR 3012 or the "Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act." The bill is also expected to pass in the Senate.

By eliminating the cap from each country on high-skilled working visa, talented immigrants from India, Philippines, China and other emerging economies can work in the US, the report said.

So much for the GOP's blathering about "illegals" taking American jobs. They just want to make them "legals" when it's cheaper for their corporate masters!

#1.10 - Mon Sep 10, 2012 7:51 PM EDT

The Senate bill is S. 1983:

Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act of 2011 - Amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to: (1) eliminate the per country numerical limitation for employment-based immigrants, and (2) increase the per country numerical limitation for family based immigrants from 7% to 15% of the total number of family-sponsored visas.

Amends the Chinese Student Protection Act of 1992 to eliminate the provision requiring the reduction of annual Chinese (PRC) immigrant visas to offset status adjustments under such Act.

So more foreign workers to take American jobs. And many more Chinese by eliminating the offset reduction for foreign worker visas.

Does anyone here not see that this is just a ploy by American corporations to avoid raising wages for American workers? Companies can get these foreign workers at 1/3rd to 2/3rds the rate of qualified Americans.

STOP the GOP from offshoring our jobs here at home!

It amazes me that the Liberals complain about Wall Street and big corporations regarding the money they make, but say nothing about Hollywood movie studios, movie stars, pro sports teams and athletics. Movie studios, movie stars, sports teams and athletics make an obscene amount of money and quite a few have gotten caught cheating on their taxes. So where is your outrage?

JersyGirl....

This should be simple for you to understand, mostly because of your handle. Why does Snooki and "The Situation" make millions every year? They are entertainers and people pay to be entertained....you know: go to the movies, watch NFL and NBA games, read all of the celebrity gossip magazines. These people make big bucks because people and corporations pay big bucks to be entertained. Last time I checked, Wall Street is not in the entertainment business, nor are they paid to entertain. They are paid to make good investments that allow people to build wealth, retire without going broke, or protect the savings of various public/private institutions and groups like teacher's unions, pension funds, and even farmers that hedge input costs on the CME. When they screw the pooch, they screw people out of their homes, their jobs, their retirement savings, and the country as a whole suffers. When Snooki screws the pooch, she gets press coverage for a having its baby and probably another lucrative TV contract to broadcast her stupidity for the rest of the world to enjoy. Not exactly an apples to apples comparison here JersyGirl, but then again I don't expect a teatard to understand simple comparisons, let alone complex ones.

Nice explanation, sleuth. My guess is too many multisyllabic words for jerseygirl to comprehend, but she probably can relate to the screw the pooch analogy. I have no doubt she's a big Santorum fan. You know, man on dog and whatnot. God, I wish Romney had chosen Santorum. I really miss using that tagline:

Dog on Car/Man on Dog 2012

But, I guess I'll have to stick with:

Real American stop spreading your lies about those two bills. As I posted else where after your lie:

The bill you cited was actually sponsered by a democrat and is still at the committee level it hasn't been passed. Get your facts straight!

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/112/s1983

The HR 3012 was passed in the house 389-15 so what does that tell you? Obviously the Republicans aren't the only ones to blame for that if it is bad. Also that was passed in the house almost a year ago, Nov 2011. Also more Republicans voted against it than did Democrats, 15 and 2 respectively.

In the interview Romney did this weekend he said he would keep some of the health care law in tact cuz that was what ppl watching Meet The Press wanted to hear. And just after the interview was over his staff told the National Review that he would not mandate that insurance companies cover ppl with pre-existing conditions. That IF there is a market for those people the "free market" would create the needed policies to cover those folks. And since he has been so credible thus far, I guess that should put ppl at ease about his plans, right?

This guy is telling ppl one thing and then turns around and tells another. You dont have to like the president to reelect him. You just have to think... are his plans credible and can they be scored? Yes. Is he dealing with facts that can be checked? Yes! Does he change his story as he goes? No! So a vote against the president just for the sake of voting against him and not necessarily for Romney is a uneducated and throw away vote. I wish ppl would just wake up. Yes a black man is president. Get over it. HE IS AN AMERICAN!

you make me laugh, little ceasar. Yes, millions of people like your neighbors, your co-workers, and even your high school teachers are sending small donations - mostly under $250.

Now you still have not answered my question: why do 3 people vowed to donate in excess of $400,000,000 to buy Romney's election?

We know why Adelson is doing it - to buy himself a possible free out-of-jail card from Romney but why would 3 Koch brothers invest so heavily in Romney? Tell me, what are they buying?

Obviously you were not paying attention to what Romney said - and what he has been saying all along. YES, he will work to repeal Obamacare AND reform our healthcare system at the same time. It is not suprising that there are some good elements in Obamacare - it's just that in it's 2700 page glory, most of it is garbage.

So Romney sees a few things there - why keep the whole trashpile if what is good is a few, simple items?

And by the way, cut the race crap out. I will concede that Obama's abysmal record is because of hiw white blood. There! Satisfied?

...and looking at the list, here's where RealClearPolitics.com has those states on the electoral college map:

      1. Florida - Toss-Up

      2. Ohio - Toss-Up

      3. Virginia - Toss-Up

      4. North Carolina - Toss-Up

      5. Colorado - Toss-Up

      6. Iowa - Toss-Up

      7. Nevada - Toss-Up

      8. New Hampshire - Toss-Up

      9. Pennsylvania - Lean Obama

      10. Wisconsin - Toss-Up

      11. Michigan - Toss-Up

      12. Minnesota - Lean Obama

      13. New Mexico - Lean Obama

RCP calls those states "Toss-Up" because the average of the polls is within margin of error. Take away the "Toss-Up" status of those states and the only one that Romney currently wins is North Carolina. All the rest go to Obama.

      Concern ...

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.” - Thomas Jefferson

Unfortunately for you, the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them, could be a slogan for YOUR campaign! Romney has a history of wasting the labors of anything to take advantage for himself and not caring about what was laid in the dust in his wake ...

A president who supports Capitalism. If you had only read Adam Smith (the author of Wealth of Nations, and the "Father" of Capitalism) You would realize that Obama is not a socialist or communist. You would realize that every thing he has done is within the realm of capitalism. And you would realize that many of the "socialist" things he is accused of doing - are really meant to free markets from corruption.

That's not moral, and it certainly isn't Christian. Remember William Jennings Bryant - "Thou shalt not crucify thy brother on a cross of gold" That's what the Republicans are trying to do this election. Don't let them!

The election is a perfect example - Citizens United "deregulated" what influence corporate interests can have in an election. This corrupts the process by allowing corporations undue influence in elections, and over the representatives who are beholden to them. But if Obama gets Citizens United reversed - it will be because he's a "socialist"

The same thing is currently going on in our markets everyday. Adam Smith allowed Governments the room to keep markets free by reigning in and yes even regulating large powerful corporate influences. This isn't socialism - it's capitalism.

And if you don't think the media and advertising give corporate interests an undue influence - ask yourself why so many people have no idea what the words "Socialism" and "Capitalism" really mean? It's because a 5 time college flunky who has no idea what these terms really mean, was given a nightly program on Faux News. And 30 million people listen to another blowhard, who has no idea what he says half the time on the EIB network.

Yes, I prefer a president who knows what capitalism is, and seeks to apply it to our markets. I don't prefer a president who wants to continue the corruption of captialism that allows one bubble after another to steal the lifesavings of hardworking Americans, and reduce the middle class to wage slavery.

Is anybody concerned that Television may becomming dependent on political advertising?

What does that dependence do to the political dialog?

Does television consiously hype the trivial political comments at the expense of covering the real issues just to keep the ad money flowing in?

The entertainment value of politics on TV will lead to the demise of political democracy based on an informed citizenry.

This is going to be an expensive election thanks to the Supreme Court and Citizens United.

In California Meg Whitman outspent Gerry Brown by millions and Brown is Governor not Whitman. Maybe we need to send the message loud and clear that you can't buy elections and, hopefully, politicians too.

I suspect that Republican candidates everywhere, especially those seeking to run against Hillary in 2016, are cleansing a full decade of their tax records as we speak.

If Romney has done ANYTHING this campaign season, he's taught his fellow Republicans that hiding tax returns is kryptonite at the national level.

So thank you Mitt, you have performed a necessary and vital public service.

I think that history will show that the Citizens United ruling will go down as one of the worst in history. We need a Constitutional amendment limiting political contributions.

            I suggest:
1). Only US citizens be allowed to contribute
2). Contributations be limited to a maximum of $2500/person/campaign.
3). No PACs. All monies are to used under the direction of the candidate who should be responsible for the legality of the contributations and use.

Will never happen but it would be nice. An added plus - lots less ads on TV, radio, etc. whoopee!!

The amount of money spent attempting to buy our democracy is disgusting. These billionaire donors get the ear of the candidate and corrupt our process. They are all dirty with it. Romney is just a bit more dirty.

There's millions of republicans out there that seem to worship the economic idealism of their party. As if, one day, their own vast wealth will be protected. Or their small business will somehow benefit from a republican administration. Most of that stuff is never going to have anything to do with you. I appreciate rags to riches and having successful business people as heros.

While I'm at it, trickle down economics is a complete myth. Companies hire people when they need to in order to make more money, not becuase they have some extra lying around.

You want to be informed and vote for the right people? Ask candidates some of these questions. Why does the US find the need to cut OUR defense budget at all when we are still giving millions of dollars overseas so that threats to our country can build their defense budgets??? Why do people get so angry with politicians cutting medicare and social security to OUR elderly when daily our government gives this money away freely to illegals in our country??? Why does health care matter at all that US citizens have to pay such high costs when again daily we handout free medical care to underserving and again illegals??? And what does it matter that we have to raise taxes on those poor working slobs when some able bodied slug sits home and does nothing and receives as much money, or that woman with 4 kids by 4 dads has another so she can collect more welfare??? And why do we continue to give corporations bonuses and incentives for moving their corporations oversea instead of taxing them for bringing their inferior made junk back in the United States????? The only way that DC can pay for their spending is to tax those who work. Well with their stupid policies they are running out of workers for their revenue stream but they continue to want to spend foolishly. You can keep going with the present system and we will surely fail or you can go to the polls and vote out all incumbants no matter what party affiliation. This will send a message to DC that we are sick of their piss-poor handling of our tax dollars and we want the US to head into a new direction that brings back jobs and our economy and our PRIDE. Government and the Presidency are not popularity polls or not who has the most money or can raise the most money. These are leadership positions so ask the questions and get the answers. We want leaders who will lead not follow.

If America is in such bad shape, where are these people getting the money for $75 Football, Basketball, and Hockey seats? Who is buying all of those new cars that helped GM and Chrysler to come back from bankruptcy? Why are banks now willing to lend money to people who are buying homes? I am guessing that the United States of America is coming back stronger, but the media and the politicians just want to bitch rather than get to work on our future. Come on November 6th.

I'd trust a public sector employee over a private sector one in a jam any day of the week. How dare anyone say anything bad about public sector workers.

As to spending. I hope Adelson and the koch brothers have heart attacks when Rommney loses. Why because Rommney is an empty suit who has NEVER done anything for anyone else who wasn't a Mormon. He's done nothing positive with his life. His so called missionary work was spent simply trying to convert people to Mormonism, which in my mind is NOT what missionary work is about. HOW DARE he ask for more tax cuts for rich people who already have more than enough money. And don't get me started on that bimbo Anne Rommney whose never worked a day in her life. Did she even go to college?

Well, at the end of the day I believe the American people have a very good understanding about these candidate. Romney/Ryan are not good for mainstream America. The Republican Party itself feel that they are flawed, such as:

Joe Scarborough states Romney "is a flawed candidate." In addition, many others have echoed the same beliefs. If the Republicans do not like their candidate you cannot expect rest of the American people to like him. Romney/Ryan has no principles and they are too extreme radical for mainstream America.

If the Republican Party cannot win in this environment, it has to get out of politics and find another business,” declared George Will on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos” Sunday.

Conservative radio talk show host Laura Ingraham on Monday called 2012 a “gimme election” for Republicans. But she lamented a lack of strong branding in the Romney campaign’s message.

“And if you’re Mitt Romney, with all of your expertise and all of your knowledge about how the economy works, and you’re in this, you have one shot, man. This is going to be the first line of your obituary: You won or you lost. It’s all on the line for the country, and it’s all on the line for you,” Ingraham said.

Speak Up, Mitt!” is the title of a piece by William Kristol in a forthcoming issue of the Weekly Standard.

The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page wrote Monday that ”The GOP candidate might try explaining his policies. Just a thought.”
