MANSFIELD, OH -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney delivered a scattershot attack on President Barack Obama on Monday, emphasizing a series of issues other than the economy.
Romney veered from his laserlike focus on the economy as several polls released in the aftermath of party conventions suggested that the incumbent president emerged with the advantage. But in looking to get his campaign back on track, the GOP nominee decided to discuss military issues and his commitment to keeping God in the public square, making his focus on the economy (an issue on which he enjoys an advantage over Obama) secondary.

"I will be a president, if elected, that honors that pledge and all the pledges that I make," Romney said at the top of his remarks before a crowd of about 1,200 in swing state Ohio. "That pledge says that we are a nation under God, and if I am president of the United States -- when and if I become president of the United States -- I will not take God out of my heart, I will not take God out of the public square and I will not take it out of the platform of my party."
Romney also served up fresh lines attacking Obama for his handling of last summer's bipartisan deal to raise the debt limit, a deal reached with the approval of both the Republican-controlled house and the president. That deal called for automatic defense cuts to take place in January 2013 if lawmakers couldn't reach some other sort of deal to address the nation's mounting debt. Lawmakers failed to reach a consensus, and the defense cuts loom on the horizon.
In anticipation of the politically difficult defense cuts, Congress earlier this summer passed a law requiring the Obama administration to detail where cuts would fall if they were to reach fruition. But the Obama administration missed the deadline to report back to Congress, giving political fodder to Romney and other Republicans.
TODAY's Savannah Guthrie discusses the presidential election race with NBC's David Gregory, including the crucial battles in swing states. Gregory also talks about his "Meet the Press" interview with Mitt Romney.
"He won't describe all the jobs that are going to be lost -- no, not probably until after the election," Romney said. "It seems we found one secret relating to national security that he's willing to keep."
Here in Ohio, where the unemployment rate is 7.2 percent, nearly a full point better than the national average, a senior Romney campaign adviser insisted voters were still primarily dialed in to economic issues, including debt and the deficit, and that Romney's economic focus could persuade voters who had not made up their minds.
"The number one issue in Ohio is the same as, I think, the number one issue across the country, which is the economy," Romney senior adviser Kevin Madden told reporters after the event here.
To be sure, Romney, as per usual, laid out his five-point plan for the middle class during today's stop, and hit the president for what he claimed was the administration's lack of a job creation plan. But other economic-based elements of the Romney stump speech were absent, including any mention of welfare reform, and the once ubiquitous "You didn't build that" attack.
While campaign advisers downplayed the significance of Romney's time spent on non-economic issues today, at least one supporter told NBC news that kind of talk was exactly what Romney needed to win over undecided voters in the Buckeye State.
The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd takes a look at the recent poll numbers and campaign stumps made by both candidates.
John Goodwin, a retired firefighter who shares a mutual Mormon faith with Romney, said before the event that Romney needed to communicate his personal values better to wavering voters who don't yet feel they know and trust the man personally.
"If he can take those values and turn them into the presidency, our country will come back," Goodwin said.
In turn, the Obama campaign accused Romney of the very same secrecy for which he attacked Obama.
“What we saw today from Mitt Romney is more of the same evasiveness that has defined his campaign. He said he would repeal Obamacare, but didn’t offer a solution for the 89 million Americans who could be denied coverage if they have a pre-existing condition. He said he would cut taxes, but didn’t say how he’d pay for $5 trillion in tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires without raising taxes on the middle class. And he said he would put students first, but left out how his deep cuts to education would hurt schools. Mitt Romney knows it’s political suicide to level with the American people about his ‘secret’ agenda, so he’s evading the truth at every turn," said Lis Smith, a spokeswoman for the president's re-election campaign.

Mr Romney needs to be careful here. Right now his Mormonism isn't much of an issue because people think he will keep it out of his politics, but this says otherwise. Do the republicans really want a Mormon to try to force his beliefs on the public? As a group that believes wholeheartedly on forcing their beliefs on the rest of us, I can't imagine this will go over very well.

Step One:
Calculate how many years you plan on living past retirement.
For example:
Retire at Age 65
Life Expectancy: 85
Planning for: 20 years survival.
Step Two
Subtract Five Years from your 20yrs of survival = 15 yrs.
Step Three
Now calculate how much you will need to save for the 15 years to supplement the Romney/Ryan Medicare voucher program ~ $6,500/yr
$6,500 X 15 = $97,500
Allow for Inflation (let’s say $10,000 over the 15 yr period)
$97,500 + $10,000 = $107,500
Step Four
Calculate the last 5 yrs of survival. These are usually the most expensive and often require nursing home or assisted living.
This range is very wide; we will calculate the maximum you will need to just be on the safe side.
Average Nursing Home Care in today’s dollars is $60,000-$80,000 a year. We’ll use $70,000/yr as an example.
5 yrs of survival * $70,000 = $350,000
NOTE: Medicare doesn’t pay for nursing home care. Medicaid may help to pay for some care. But we can’t be sure with Romney/Ryan – most likely this will be defunded as well. So you will need to come up with most of the cost out of pocket.
Step Five
Add up the totals.
$107,500 + $305,000 = $457,500
Step Six
Financing your $457,500 in cost for your care.
Option One:
Reverse mortgages may be an option to fund your costs until you need nursing home care. If you move out of your home, your family will need to sell the property to help fund the last five years of your survival.
The money plus interest paid to you before you move will be taken out of the total proceeds of the sale of your home.
Option Two
Long term health insurance. It’s much cheaper to get this insurance early in life, so when you need assistance it may help to cover a large percentage of your costs. You will need to factor in the cost of the premiums.
This cost could range from $500/mo to $1,100/mo or more! But there are severe restrictions to collect if you need it and you need to be in good health when you apply.
Option Three
Go bankrupt. You cannot be forced to pay for care if you have no assets.
A word of warning though. If you “give away” any of your assets to family, they can attach the bill of your care to that gift. In other words, your family will have to come up with it or be forced to sell whatever has been given to them.
Option Four
Save Early! Get a second job with health benefits, if your health permits and work as late in your life as possible. The closer you can get to your life expectancy, the less overall it will cost.

Note: As you age, do some estate planning with a qualified attorney to map out your best approach to pay for your care when you get older. The earlier you start the less of a financial hardship to your family.

Thank you. Yes, Obama's plan will extend Medicare until 2024. Romney's plan would cause Medicare to fail by 2016.
We do need to address this issue. My way thinking is that getting 12 yrs to come up with other options under Obama's plan is better than 4 yrs with Romney/Ryan's plan.
Either way we MUST come up with a plan.
I hope my posting raised awareness that theses are actual cost you can expect unless a workable plan is enacted.

There was an obvious shift toward ecumenical religiosity at the Republican convention, and they are clearly continuing with that movement. The question is, if Romney is still trying to fire up his base, isn't that a sign of weakness? Doesn't he need to aim for independents, or does the party really think injecting religion into politics is something mainstream America outside of the religious right wants?

Republicans debuted a new ad Thursday in which a frustrated former "Obama supporter" expresses her disappointment with the president. The only problem: The woman in the video is actually an RNC staffer.
The new ad features Republican National Committee Director of Hispanic Outreach Bettina Inclan, who in the ad purports to be an average woman voter who supported Obama in 2008.

Seeing as I was raised LDS and later left (disagreements of faith) I'm quite a bit more qualified then most if not all of these posters to discuss their tenants. The LDS are Christians, the believe in both the Old and New testament, I know because I had to study them for Sunday school and young mens. Their only major differing belief is that what happened in Israel wasn't the "whole story" and that "God" appeared multiple times. The Book of Mormon is another testament that happened after Jesus "died". Joseph Smith was supposedly given a divine vision about the location of the plates that other testament was written on. And thus the LDS church was a schism from the various protestant churches that had been settling in. They believe in the same "God" just different details on the faith.
Now I don't exactly believe in their tenants, but at least I'm not ignorant of their beliefs. Modern Protestants persecute Mormons for the same reason Islamists persecute Christians, ignorance fear and hatred.
Myself, I'm an "independent centrist" aka "swing voter", so far Obama has my vote. Romney just comes off the same as McCain did, a "party man" who will say / do anything their party tells them. Thus their nothing but a figurehead for their respective political party and right now the GOP is about as bad as you can get.

First, your assumption that a person loses all civil liberties, to include the right to privacy, when they are elected President is bogus. And if you remember, President Bush's school records were leaked. Also, you never provided a source for your statement that "Obama spent millions hiding his records" nor did you even try to validate that statement you made.
Secondly, while the total of the jobs as you listed do top 100,000 you forgot to net out the jobs that were destroyed via outsourcing and bankrupting companies nor did you net out the jobs that were already there and remained there after Bain came along, you added them into your numbers. Do the total of jobs is also NOT "hundreds of thousands" (note the multiple number you used) and you still provided no source.
Lastly, if Gov. Romney is given credit for job creation in Mass., it would be hypocritical to NOT give President Obama credit for jobs created while he is President. That makes the job creation score over 4 million for President Obama and less than 200,000 for Gov. Romney.

Two reasons:
1. Romney had a ver low approval rating as gov. of Mass (he has no chance to carry Mass on Nov. 6)
2. He never had any interest in the position really; he only used Massachusetts to make connections for his 2008 presidential bid which he lost to McCain and later to Palin for VP.

I was watching CNN and Fox over the weekend to get a feel for fairness of each network on the election. There is no doubt Fox is favoring Romney and CNN is putting a favorable light on Obama. Saying either channel is fair and balance is drinking the Kool-Aid. Both channels are trying to hold on to their core audience. Propaganda machines.

At the RNC he wanted to repeal Obamacare, but on Sunday's "Meet the Press" he said, he wants to keep aspects of healthcare reform known as ACA, or as it's known in the south "Obamacare".

A laser-like focus would entail something close to a realistic (i.e. the numbers add up) economic plan that make sense to the sane people of the country. Choice 1: Admit he believes in universal healthcare (which he helped develop), admit his love of money at any cost to others, own up to a socio-pathology that has been frightening at times, and concede that he has a lifetime of tax evasion.
Choice 2: Deny his own history, hide every business and political activity rather than shed light on it, and suggest that he has succeeded at . . . well . . . nothing of interest to anyone else.

There wasn't much for Republicans to love in the Supreme Court's ruling that Obamacare is constitutional, except that they concluded the individual mandate is, for constitutional purposes (but not for others), a tax. The soundbites write themselves. Republicans can now brand Obama as raising taxes on the middle class, or, if they're feeling particularly blustery, "the biggest tax increase in the history of the world." But ABC News' Michael Falcone pulls up video from a January 2008 Republican presidential primary debate in which Romney seems to think such a tax is pretty great. When the debate moderator asks, "Governor … you imposed tax penalties in Massachusetts?" Romney defends the mandate by framing it terms of personal responsibility. "Yes, we said, look, if people can afford to buy it, either buy the insurance or pay your own way," he said. "Don’t be free-riders."

2. It's "ultimate conservatism." In 2007, Romney said that when the uninsured show up in emergency rooms and get free health care, that's a "form of socialism." By contrast, his health care law was conservative and inspired by the Heritage Foundation, something that is true and that the Heritage Foundation would probably like people to forget.

3. It's a good national model. Romney boasted that Congress and the President could learn a lot about health care reform from his Massachusetts plan during an interview with CNN in 2009, "I think there are a number of features in the Massachusetts plan that could inform Washington on ways to improve health care for all Americans," he said "The fact that we were able to get people insured without a government option is a model I think they can learn from." Start at 1:05 and note the lack of concern about constitutional issues.
4. It's humane. When Romney left office in 2007, his staff erased his office's emails from a server computer in an attempt to wipe them from the public record. But earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal found a few survivors, including Romney's own early drafts of his April 2006 Journal op-ed about the passage of Romneycare. Romney used language that would surely irritate many conservatives, and it was toned down when eventually published. Nevertheless, Romney's original thoughts are preserved forever:
The problem is that too much of the electorate is not very literate, and this section of the electorate is very, very afraid. Afraid of the economic uncertainties and afraid of all the social change going on in the country. Fox news, Rush and the wealthy capitalize on this fear, making the message very simple and demonizing Obama as the very symbol of all the change and uncertainty. Fear is a great motivator.
Over the long term, conservatives can not win this thing. The demographics will continue to change no matter what conservatives do, the internet has made communications too easy and those with a new-found voice will not be shut up without a major fight. However, there are still two months to go, Romney and his SuperPacs have a lot of money, they will not go down easy.
People who believe America is more than just being able to make more money than your neighbor have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity here. It will only get better in the coming years. This is our chance to show that Big Money, Ads and sound bites don't win every time. Sometimes the people really will be heard, but only if we care enough to push very hard and make it happen.
