Romney camp: 'Don't get too worked up about the latest polling'

Responding to the early polling showing President Obama with a bounce -- and lead -- after the two conventions, Romney pollster Neil Newhouse argues in a memo to reporters that the presidential contest "has not changed significantly."

"Don't get too worked up about the latest polling," Newhouse writes in the memo. "While some voters will feel a bit of a sugar-high from the conventions, the basic structure of the race has not changed significantly. The reality of the Obama economy will reassert itself as the ultimate downfall of the Obama presidency, and Mitt Romney will win this race."

Related: First Thoughts: After Tampa and Charlotte

Newhouse adds, "The key numbers in this election are the 43 straight months of 8% or higher unemployment, the 23 million Americans struggling to find work, and the 47 million Americans who are on food stamps."

However, as we wrote in First Thoughts this morning, Obama went into the conventions with the lead, and emerged from those conventions with the lead.

And as Politico reported over the weekend, “The Romney campaign … said the post-convention bounce they hoped for fell well short of expectations and privately lament that state-by-state polling numbers — most glaringly in Ohio — are working in the president’s favor.”

“Their map has many more routes to victory,” a top GOP official admitted to Politico.

Team Romney not paying attention to the polls....really!!!!! because Gov. Romney is too busy endorsing Rep. Steve King (immigration extremist) who in turn is 100% behind "Mr. legitimate Rape" Todd Akin.

My real problem is ObamaCare forcing all companies to provide healthcare to everyone or be heavily "fined"....yes, fine the companies, and fine the individuals that do not have insurance - - this still does not get them insurance but gets the government a lot of money in "fines" (not taxes). This is a bunch of BS.
My company is doing fine, but many of the small companies that I deal with everyday are really hurting and may not survive (...unemployment to rise). With so many empty stores now along every US highway, and more becoming empty each week, I do not see many restaurants, retail stores, small companies, etc. surviving in the future with these new healthcare charges and fines. If they do survive, get ready for the prices to skyrocket to pay for these "fines" - wait till you see the costs that will be passed on to you and me for restaurant meals (for waiters and waitresses), consumer goods, ......even getting popcorn at a movie will go up to pay for the counter help's "ObamaCare fines". Look at the impact on seasonal help like Christmas retail and the Summer shore/boardwalk help - - it will either vanish or get so expensive it will cause the inflation rate to take off in this country - - Hey, raise the inflation rate enough and the existing national debt will appear to go down. I think this is their game plan. Where going to need a new money bill - - the new ObamaTrillion Dollar Bill.

Remember, the government cannot give anything to anyone that they have not first taken away from someone else. If Obama is re-elected, get ready for a massive "take away" - - and the total ruin of this country - - like Nero playing the fiddle while Rome burns...

gsmq...I was speaking of Obamacare (or Obamanotcare).....

....what did Bush have to do with Obamacare? Personally, I believe that Bush spent way too much of our money and it seems Obama is in a competition to outspend Bush! Bush sucked...but Obama REALLY blows!

I don't know how Romney will do, but I know we really can't afford another 4 years of Obama!

You seem to like to insult Romney by calling him "flipper". Well, how do you feel about this:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a Sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. ...Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here'. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and Grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

What are the Republicans really offering? Let's see: a return to trickle down economics which has never worked and never will; a military budget expanded beyond what the military is asking for (and they accuse Dems of wasteful spending); cutting some of our country's most successful programs (Medicare, SS); de-regulation and tax breaks for corporations and financial institutions. Need I continue? And we are supposed to buy into this Grand Old Party scheme once again. Me thinks not, and the Repubs will be crushed in the debates. No Sale, righties!

              "On Feb. 2, 2009,
President Barack Obama explained his chances to fix the economy to host Matt Lauer on NBC's "Today" show: "I will be held accountable. I've got four years. … If I don't have this done in three years, then there's going to be a one-term proposition."According to Obama, himself, words mean something. It doesn't matter how high you jump on your soap box, nobody votes for a "nothing" candidate. He HAS TO HAVE A PLAN, that is presidential politic! For anyone to think we need to just get rid of the current guy because a few racist or bigots don't like him is completely out of your @!$%#ing mind! A lot of people didn't like Bush and even he got another 4 years! There is no way in hell that empty suit sits in that chair in the oval office with NO PLAN for ANYTHING that ails this country. He's just not trustworthy, and is libel to make things even worse. Remember, republicans know how to win elections but are HORRIBLE at governing. You want the same strategy in place don't you? Go out and war monger without paying for these little excursions, lower taxes (especially the rich), don't close any loopholes in the tax code, and all this is supposed to lower the deficit? You and Romney need to both take intermediate math class....your numbers don't add up!

Mitt Romney left Massachusetts with the largest debt in state history. Massachusetts ranked 47th out of 50 US States for job creation, when Mitt walked away. Mitt Romney chose to walk away from a second term as Governor of Massachusetts, yet he managed to shelter hundreds of millions in offshore tax havens in Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, and Switzerland. I don't know about you, but I have told the IRS that they cannot see my offshore accounts until they let me see Romney's Offshore Accounts. Why should average American Taxpayers not have the same rights to cheat on their taxes, just like Mitt Romney? Warren Buffet and Bill Gates pay their fair share, why does Mitt Romney get all of the special breaks?

So a $16 trillion debt and climbing, $5.4 Trillion new Obama debt, 13.9 million people out of work, more people on food stamps than ever, destroying the healthtaxcare system,43 months unemployment above 8.1% and no sign of it getting better, 1.5% GDP, first time in U.S. history our credit rating downgraded...you bet, Obama has really led the country in the right direction. Failed Leadership.....

We need CHANGE so we can move FORWARD.....

Maybe so ... but if the Republican Party would just get out of the GD way, the country would be doing MUCH better than it is now.

To obstruct Obama's efforts to improve the economy further (it's already back on track), and then blame him for it is juvenile and irresponsible. I doubt I'll ever vote Republican again (2-time Reagan voter here). The Republican Party has shifted so far to the right I don't recognize them anymore, and I genuinely believe their extremist social agenda is going to finish them for good. Good riddance!

Finally! He didn't flip flop. Polls are showing facts about how people feel. He will just ignore those facts and brush them off as insignificant like all other facts. Way to go!

Romney is, and should be, toast. He is one of the worst presidential candidates I've ever seen, and I'm a white boomer.

The guy has no plan, and no core. I saw all this coming months ago, and it finally appears to be manifesting.

Repealing Obamacare would be one of the biggest mistakes the country could make in its history.
