Responding to the early polling showing President Obama with a bounce -- and lead -- after the two conventions, Romney pollster Neil Newhouse argues in a memo to reporters that the presidential contest "has not changed significantly."
"Don't get too worked up about the latest polling," Newhouse writes in the memo. "While some voters will feel a bit of a sugar-high from the conventions, the basic structure of the race has not changed significantly. The reality of the Obama economy will reassert itself as the ultimate downfall of the Obama presidency, and Mitt Romney will win this race."

Newhouse adds, "The key numbers in this election are the 43 straight months of 8% or higher unemployment, the 23 million Americans struggling to find work, and the 47 million Americans who are on food stamps."
However, as we wrote in First Thoughts this morning, Obama went into the conventions with the lead, and emerged from those conventions with the lead.
And as Politico reported over the weekend, “The Romney campaign … said the post-convention bounce they hoped for fell well short of expectations and privately lament that state-by-state polling numbers — most glaringly in Ohio — are working in the president’s favor.”
“Their map has many more routes to victory,” a top GOP official admitted to Politico.

How funny. After Willard's convention and he came out with 1 point advantage of Barack in some polls, his pollsters were saying how significant this is and it is the 1st time Mitt has gone ahead of Obama. They said it show Mitt is gonna win, etc, etc, etc.
Now they say it shows nothing and means even less despite some polls show a 5% lead over the Romper Room goofball. For a first significant lead of the election period. Oh well, you can't expect any less from these nut jobs........
Well, if that isn't what every candidate says when the polls turn against them. Were it the opposite he'd be crowing like a rooster. Ironic thing is that he's been running his campaign completely by the pols from day one, changing his lies and positions to suit. I expect that after the Biden / Ryan debate he's going to feel like someone put grease on the slide. I can't believe the arrogance of the GOP. They actually think that Americans are so stupid that they'd vote for someone who makes George Bush look competent. Did they learn absolutely nothing from the Sarah Palin debacle or is this actually the best they have to offer? Like I just told my wife when her 2nd red light camera ticket arrived today: "Sometimes you just have to say Whoops, we are wrong, and learn." Unfortunately I don't see the current GOP as capable of doing that. Pride goes before the fall. Hopefully they'll learn when they lose majorities in both houses this time. I'd sure like to go back to being an Independent voter one day, but right now I can't see ever voting Republican again. I consider them Anti-American.

Obama is an extraordinarily skilled speaker. He can be personally charming. He is a superb salesman. Many very intelligent voters were completely convinced his by his grandiose statements, delivered with absolute certainty. (Give me a trillion dollars to spend, and unemployment will never rise above 8%. I will close Gitmo in one year! I will cut the deficit in half by end of my first term. Etc, etc, etc.)
There is no shame in admitting that we were fooled by someone so skillful. We have an unfortunate human tendency, though, to identify with the decisions we have made and defend them as if we were defending our own worth. This is especially true when we have a “support group” of others who are also finding every possible excuse for the same decisions.
When you find yourself repeating excuses that are objectively irrational (The Tea Party is composed of terrorists who are more powerful than the President and the Senate combined), it is time to shake yourself, back away a little, and reevaluate your position.
Blind loyalty to a losing sports team is endearing; blind loyalty to a failed leader is dangerous.

As for the military, many uninformed have bought into the mantra that is is the GOP that is so great when it comes to defense and supporting the military. One would think that 8 years of Bush's and Cheneys (both draft dodgers as well) would the lie to that but some sadly lingers on.

During most of the Bush years, unemployment was in steady decline, averaging 5%. When the Democrats took over Congress in 2006, the decline was first halted and then reversed. After Obama's failed "stimulus", unemployment rose even more.

Do some research and get educated about where the whole mess started back with the Clinton admin. making banks lend to subprime borrowers. It ballooned from there. The crash had little to do with Bush and this current economy has everything to do with Obama.
Here's the choice do we give big businesses tax breaks again here in United States, which Romney wants or do we spend more Government money in other countries to make products for the United States that's Obama's idea.

I believe the bump will be more permanent. Most people who were undecided, like I was was using the conventions to see what Romney could say or offer. Since he had not fleshed out a plan that I could see while stumping, I assumed he would spell out actual and real solutions during the RNC. Because usually thats when the plan/platform is spelled out. But there was nothing AND they shyt was boring and uninspiring.
I could have supported the 1994 Mitt. This new millineium Mitt seems to be a puppet who has been bought and paid for and has no conviction. If he had stayed the 1994 Mitt, I think a lot of Middle of the road and Independents would have gravited towards him. Missed opportunity.
While I can't say I agree with everything done in the Obama Administration, I can say that he at least has conviction, has good intentions and has been dealt a bad hand.
I knew before he was elected, if the economy worsens, people would blame him and give him a hard time. So this whole 'Failed economy' rationale doesnt work for me, as I am rational.
