Responding to the early polling showing President Obama with a bounce -- and lead -- after the two conventions, Romney pollster Neil Newhouse argues in a memo to reporters that the presidential contest "has not changed significantly."
"Don't get too worked up about the latest polling," Newhouse writes in the memo. "While some voters will feel a bit of a sugar-high from the conventions, the basic structure of the race has not changed significantly. The reality of the Obama economy will reassert itself as the ultimate downfall of the Obama presidency, and Mitt Romney will win this race."
Related: First Thoughts: After Tampa and Charlotte
Newhouse adds, "The key numbers in this election are the 43 straight months of 8% or higher unemployment, the 23 million Americans struggling to find work, and the 47 million Americans who are on food stamps."
However, as we wrote in First Thoughts this morning, Obama went into the conventions with the lead, and emerged from those conventions with the lead.
And as Politico reported over the weekend, “The Romney campaign … said the post-convention bounce they hoped for fell well short of expectations and privately lament that state-by-state polling numbers — most glaringly in Ohio — are working in the president’s favor.”
“Their map has many more routes to victory,” a top GOP official admitted to Politico.

How funny. After Willard's convention and he came out with 1 point advantage of Barack in some polls, his pollsters were saying how significant this is and it is the 1st time Mitt has gone ahead of Obama. They said it show Mitt is gonna win, etc, etc, etc.
Now they say it shows nothing and means even less despite some polls show a 5% lead over the Romper Room goofball. For a first significant lead of the election period. Oh well, you can't expect any less from these nut jobs........
Well, if that isn't what every candidate says when the polls turn against them. Were it the opposite he'd be crowing like a rooster. Ironic thing is that he's been running his campaign completely by the pols from day one, changing his lies and positions to suit. I expect that after the Biden / Ryan debate he's going to feel like someone put grease on the slide. I can't believe the arrogance of the GOP. They actually think that Americans are so stupid that they'd vote for someone who makes George Bush look competent. Did they learn absolutely nothing from the Sarah Palin debacle or is this actually the best they have to offer? Like I just told my wife when her 2nd red light camera ticket arrived today: "Sometimes you just have to say Whoops, we are wrong, and learn." Unfortunately I don't see the current GOP as capable of doing that. Pride goes before the fall. Hopefully they'll learn when they lose majorities in both houses this time. I'd sure like to go back to being an Independent voter one day, but right now I can't see ever voting Republican again. I consider them Anti-American.
Mitt Romney: I like to pay taxes, trust me. I support American banks even though 90% of my money is invested offshore in foreign banks, trust me! Trust me please! I'm winning, trust me! Please! I once knew a Middle Class person, trust me!
At least Romney has the FLDS vote and his domestic helps vote, which is in the hundreds, locked up!
All bought to you courtesy of those TeaParty/Republicans in the House !!!! What a disgrace you all are!!! Thank God Pres. Obama who is working for ALL the people. So glad when this election cycle is over so he can make some progress on country's issues. President Obama will be re-elected and will have nothing to lose trying to make things right for ALL of us.
Obama is an extraordinarily skilled speaker. He can be personally charming. He is a superb salesman. Many very intelligent voters were completely convinced his by his grandiose statements, delivered with absolute certainty. (Give me a trillion dollars to spend, and unemployment will never rise above 8%. I will close Gitmo in one year! I will cut the deficit in half by end of my first term. Etc, etc, etc.)
There is no shame in admitting that we were fooled by someone so skillful. We have an unfortunate human tendency, though, to identify with the decisions we have made and defend them as if we were defending our own worth. This is especially true when we have a “support group” of others who are also finding every possible excuse for the same decisions.
When you find yourself repeating excuses that are objectively irrational (The Tea Party is composed of terrorists who are more powerful than the President and the Senate combined), it is time to shake yourself, back away a little, and reevaluate your position.
Blind loyalty to a losing sports team is endearing; blind loyalty to a failed leader is dangerous.
If that is what you believe........I wasn't fooled by anyone. The only fools are those who would do and say anything they think would stop Pres. Obama from being successful. My loyalty is well placed.
My sons and myself really wanted to serve in the military,we often have watched Rambo and John Wayne movies, trust me!
Romney, a middle class American, and a poor American are standing around a table. On the table lies a plate with a dozen fresh baked cookies. The three alleged Americans (I haven't seen Romney's birth cert) are trying to figure out how best to split the cookies between them. Suddenly, Romney grabs 11 of the cookies, looks at the middle class American and says "look out, that bum is trying to steal your cookie!"
Mitt Romney: I really wanted to serve in the Vietnam war and thought often about the troops as I was in Socialist France sipping the finest French wine as my servants attended to my every needs in my villa,I always supported the troops. Trust me!
Well, not exactly. Willard, as a Mormon missionary, wasn't allowed to drink alcoholic beverages or those containing caffeine. But it's clear he felt more of a calling to serve his church in France than to serve his country in Vietnam.
Don't worry about the latest Polling because the Debates are really going to put the nail in Mitt's coffin.
This guy will say anything to get elected, he was going to scrap Obamacare and start new, he has campaigned on that from day one. Now ....it's parts that I am going to keep in place.....don't believe it because he will change his tune if he is elected to suit his Rich Donors.

Romney supporters are just like Mitt cowards, liars and self centered individuals that support wealthy Robber Barron types over Joe Middle Class. Like Romney they think the Middle Class is undeserving and that corporations are people. Like Romney they lack a conscious and a soul. Yeah Rightwingers keep supporting the 1% instead of the Middle Class,we know you will!
You would see an instant turn around in the economy if Mitt gets elected because these 1percenters per say, will begin investing again and making moves financially. Right now they are unsure with Obama in office. However if Obama is given another 4 years I truely hope he gets the house and senate as well so he can have waht he wants and we'll all see in a year where it is leading us.
Cowards? I find it amazing that people find it easy and cowardly to talk the crap from behind their keyboards.
TRACY, Yes, cowards. Willard march in protest TO SUPPORT THE VIET NAM WAR and more importanly, THE DRAFT.
Then when his number got called he lifted up his skirts and flew over to France to do "Missionary Work" for the Mormon church. How's that for profiles in courage buddy???
Tony was referring to Romney supporters as being cowards, but fail to realize that most of the military vets support him....not Obama.
http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/ballot-2012/2012/05/29/poll-veterans-overwhelmingly-support-romney-over-obama
....and for him to call Romney supporters that are NOT military or ex-military coward shows that talking smack from behind a keyboard is very telling about his LACK of courage.
TRACY, You failed to address my point about your boy Willard. He is without question, a poster boy for Draft Dodgers.
As for the military, many uninformed have bought into the mantra that is is the GOP that is so great when it comes to defense and supporting the military. One would think that 8 years of Bush's and Cheneys (both draft dodgers as well) would the lie to that but some sadly lingers on.
Anytime you'd like to compare notes on Democrat and GOP Congress people and others associated with the government as to who has served with valor and distincition, by all means let me know. What you will find is that your party which loves to talk tough is actually filled with Chicken Hawks and Democrats who the Right clains do not love their country and have never served, you'd be astounded at how many currently in Congress have impressive military backgrounds.
Excuse me? I happen to be a part of the middle class and how dare you judge me like that. My husband and I work our tails off, pay our bills, pay our taxes and try to save a little back and you dare calle me a coward, liar and self centered? Why is it that liberals are always the ones to point their fingers and blame everyone else for their problems. Suck it up, put on your big boy britches and deal with it. When I was growing up we didn't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of; but I certainly did not let that stop me. I certainly did not wallow in self pity and think that it was everyone else's fault and that they should pay my way. Thank you to all of the "entitlement people" out there. NO ONE owes you anything.
"TRACY, You failed to address my point about your boy Willard. He is without question, a poster boy for Draft Dodgers."
You brought up something that wasn't even relevant to what I was addressing in my post.
"Anytime you'd like to compare notes on Democrat and GOP Congress people and others associated with the government as to who has served with valor and distincition, by all means let me know"
No problem bud....
http://veterans.house.gov/sites/republicans.veterans.house.gov/files/112th-Congress-House-Military_Vets.pdf
24 Dems and 68 Republicans in the 112th House of Representatives are ex-military and all of them were elected in the 2010 Democrat ass kicking.
BTW what even does this have to do with Tony talking smack and calling Romney supporters cowards? Vets support Romney over Obama by nearly 2 to 1 as the link I provided earlier proves. Also those of us Romeny supporters who haven't served will take to task any little prick calling us cowards any day of the week.

The guy who's behind always tells us not to trust the polls.
Not worried about the polls? Right. They'll just Etch-a-Sketch those too.
JCnGAM - Do you have any idea where the "Etch-a-Sketch" insult originated or are you just vomiting back left-wing slogans that some other idiot fed you? Here are the facts:
Romney's communications director Eric Fehrnstromon referred to the shift from a primary campaign to a presidential campaign by saying "I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It's almost like an Etch-A-Sketch" Of course, Romney's opponents immediately pretended the remark had some significance.
Contrast this with Jeremiah Wright, Obama's pastor and mentor for 20 years saying, “The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color.”
Intelligent people will recognize that the "etch-sketch" comment is a cute analogy by one of Romney's campaign workers; while saying that AIDS is a means of genocide against Blacks. represents a core belief that Obama has absorbed.
We all know that the GOPs Jesus would support tax breaks for the 1% over the Middle Class, yes the GOPs Jesus lives in a mansion drives a Rolls and hangs out with the Koch brothers and Grover Norquist and is a buddy of Rushes. Like Rush Jesus hates those FemaNazis,Liberals, all minorities, all foreigners and gays, women, and people of dark skin. What;'s that you say: Jesus was dark skinned, minority and was a foreigner? Never mind!
tonywarvet is that all you can do is spew lies; you do realize the Snerdly is black right? Yeah Rush is a real racist. Sounds to me like you need to take a good long look in the mirror.

Snooze.........
metoo666,
blah blah blah
And just think there are naive people actually think that the ACA will actually get healthcare cost to go down!!
"Yes, cowards. Willard march in protest TO SUPPORT THE VIET NAM WAR and more importanly"
Tony was talking about the Romney supporters.....from behind his keyboard.
Romney camp, week 1: "The polls show we're ahead! Yay! The polls PROVE that the American people want Mitt!"
Romney camp, week 2: "Don't get too worked up about the latest polling..."
Again... why would we turn the Presidency back over to the party that caused the problems in the first place?????? I don't think soooooo........... We are slowly fixing their mess and I for one don't want to reverse the process..
You have actually convinced yourself of that, haven't you Debby?
During most of the Bush years, unemployment was in steady decline, averaging 5%. When the Democrats took over Congress in 2006, the decline was first halted and then reversed. After Obama's failed "stimulus", unemployment rose even more.
Debby-310061
REALLY! HOW DO YOU SEE THAT THE MESS HAS BEEN FIXED? 24 MILLION AMERICANS OUT OF WORK, 47 MILLION AMERICANS ON FOOD STAMPS. People still losing there jobs and benefits. Obama STOLE $715 billion dollars from medicare. Obama care not covering everything it was said to cover and multiple taxes slid in the 2700 pages. Man, you are a delusional idiot liberal!! And this is not even half the LIES Obama has told America.
Do some research and get educated about where the whole mess started back with the Clinton admin. making banks lend to subprime borrowers. It ballooned from there. The crash had little to do with Bush and this current economy has everything to do with Obama.
Here's the choice do we give big businesses tax breaks again here in United States, which Romney wants or do we spend more Government money in other countries to make products for the United States that's Obama's idea.
You choose, me I would rather have the tax breaks for the businesses in the United States and keep the money here then send it to China or India or any other country.
Bain-One stop outsourcing!
Obama helped the union stock holders at GM and GE build new plants overseas in china and hired 100,000 foreign employees. NOT AMERICA!! Obama, the king of OUTSOURCING AND SCREWING Americans!!!!!!!!!!! Liberals can't think of any BS to JUSTIFY Obama's actions. He is a traitor to our country.
I believe the bump will be more permanent. Most people who were undecided, like I was was using the conventions to see what Romney could say or offer. Since he had not fleshed out a plan that I could see while stumping, I assumed he would spell out actual and real solutions during the RNC. Because usually thats when the plan/platform is spelled out. But there was nothing AND they shyt was boring and uninspiring.
I could have supported the 1994 Mitt. This new millineium Mitt seems to be a puppet who has been bought and paid for and has no conviction. If he had stayed the 1994 Mitt, I think a lot of Middle of the road and Independents would have gravited towards him. Missed opportunity.
While I can't say I agree with everything done in the Obama Administration, I can say that he at least has conviction, has good intentions and has been dealt a bad hand.
I knew before he was elected, if the economy worsens, people would blame him and give him a hard time. So this whole 'Failed economy' rationale doesnt work for me, as I am rational. Especially given all the road block anyone with any sense can see he has been met with for all the possible solutions he has had.
If you want me to vote for you I NEED YOU TO SPELL OUT YOU REAL PLANS!!!
Romney not only will not spell out a plan, but seems shaky and inconsistent on the stuff he will say!! And that lack of conviction tells me you are lying and not convinced of your own lie.
This "waiting for things to fall completely apart and hoping that will be enough to get elected" tactic is not enough and its clearly not working.
I'll ride with President Obama and pray for better days.
Don't worry be happy. That's easy to say for a candidate who has almost unlimited cash from large wealthy donars who do not have to report thier contributions. Easy to say for a guy who in the end believes he and his wealthy friends will buy the government in November. I think the 99% will have something to say about that. Don't worry be happy.
The Republicans chose a Vulture Capitalist tax cheat as its nominee for president and now he's tanking in the polls nationally and in every swing state. Imagine that!
right, don't wprry about the polls Lyin Ryan and Robme, it just shows that people are seeing the glass half full,e.g., job growth every month since the Prez took office and not negatively as the Repubnots would spin it. As Bubba said, no president could have turned this completely around in 4 years, but our president has made a helluva inroad and I am proud of him. OBAMA/BIDEN 2012.
Romney: "Don't worry about the polls, we've rigged the voting."
"Don't get too worked up about the latest polling,", says the guy BEHIND in the polls.
I don't think Romney knows what he plans to do, what he should do, or even what he wants to do. Looking more like he just wants to be president, forget anything else. He just wants to be president!!! These debates should be VERY interesting.
Obama/Biden 2012
