Romney camp: 'Don't get too worked up about the latest polling'

Responding to the early polling showing President Obama with a bounce -- and lead -- after the two conventions, Romney pollster Neil Newhouse argues in a memo to reporters that the presidential contest "has not changed significantly."

"Don't get too worked up about the latest polling," Newhouse writes in the memo. "While some voters will feel a bit of a sugar-high from the conventions, the basic structure of the race has not changed significantly. The reality of the Obama economy will reassert itself as the ultimate downfall of the Obama presidency, and Mitt Romney will win this race."

Related: First Thoughts: After Tampa and Charlotte

Newhouse adds, "The key numbers in this election are the 43 straight months of 8% or higher unemployment, the 23 million Americans struggling to find work, and the 47 million Americans who are on food stamps."

However, as we wrote in First Thoughts this morning, Obama went into the conventions with the lead, and emerged from those conventions with the lead.

And as Politico reported over the weekend, “The Romney campaign … said the post-convention bounce they hoped for fell well short of expectations and privately lament that state-by-state polling numbers — most glaringly in Ohio — are working in the president’s favor.”

“Their map has many more routes to victory,” a top GOP official admitted to Politico.

Any one care to guess his party affiliation? Of course, the article makes no mention of it, so that should give you a good hint.

By Jonathan Dienst, Shimon Prokupecz and Joe Valiquette, NBCNewYork.com

Federal authorities arrested Trenton, N.J., Mayor Tony Mack and more than half a dozen other people early Monday in connection with an ongoing corruption probe, NBC 4 New York has learned.

Joseph "JoJo" Giorgianni, a top campaign contributor, and six others were also taken into custody. Specific charges against the suspects are expected to be outlined by Paul Fishman, the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, later Monday.

Mack and the others arrested Monday were brought to the FBI office in Hamilton for processing and are scheduled to appear in federal court.

The arrests are the latest development in an ongoing federal investigation into alleged corruption within Mack's administration, which has been marked by accusations of nepotism and reckless spending. In July, FBI agents searched offices in Trenton City Hall a day after raiding the mayor's home. They also searched the home of his brother, Ralpiel Mack, and that of Giorgianni.

Mack's administration has been in turmoil from Day 1, staggering from one crisis to another. A housecleaning of staff at City Hall opened the door for Mack's own appointees, who quickly turned it into a revolving door. Some left over questions about their credentials, others to face criminal charges.

In Mack's first year in office in Trenton, a city of 85,000, he ran through a string of business administrators. The first resigned after a month, saying the mayor didn't believe in "good government." Another resigned just ahead of pleading guilty to embezzlement at another job.

Mack's housing director quit after it emerged that he had a theft conviction. His chief of staff was arrested trying to buy heroin. His half-brother, whose authority he elevated at the city water plant, was arrested on charges of stealing.

Questions have also been raised about how he financed his campaign for mayor.

A former longtime city employee sued the mayor late last year. The parks department employee said she was let go after refusing to dole out jobs for the mayor's friends, refusing to give federal grant money to people who didn't apply and for inquiring about city funds she said were missing.

The ex-employee also said she was replaced by a Mack supporter who never showed up for his $40,000-a-year job.

A former campaign aide told NBC 4 New York he disassociated with Mack when he "saw the way he was going."

"This is not a surprise," Jerell Blakley said of the probe into Mack's activities. "A lot of people in Trenton were of the opinion -- not of if, but when."

meto999- You all love to trot that interview out, and IF the President had a fair shot, at really fixing things, but he was blocked, filibustered, and told NO at every turn, so blame your own party for reelecting the President.

And the fact is from the Republican Primaries you never had a viable candidate, Newt, Saintorum, Perry, pizza man, you all should be embarrassed. The only decent one Huntsman, but since he worked with the President...

So your stuck with mitwit and lyin Ryan! DEAL!

So you don't believe that a president should stand by his own words??

or was it just a other LIE.......

    In his own words:

    "On Feb. 2, 2009,
President Barack Obama explained his chances to fix the economy to host Matt Lauer on NBC's "Today" show: "I will be held accountable. I've got four years. … If I don't have this done in three years, then there's going to be a one-term proposition."According to Obama, himself, words mean something. He has made his entire political career using carefully chosen words.

The Obama bum kisser go around touting all the legislation that was passed during Obama's term as his list of great achievements. But when it comes to his failures, all of a sudden he is not responsible, its the fault of Congress, Bush, ATMs, tsunamis, Europe, Arab Spring (he encouraged) and any number of things he can come up with this week. If he is going to take the credit he gets the blame too. He failed and that is the crux of the entire problem right now, Obama doesn't want to put on his big boy pants and take responsibility. And we can not afford another four years of finger pointing and false promises.

met and King ... in an unprecedented event such as this Great Recession, Obama could not have known it would take this long for the economy to recover, so it was reasonable for him to make the comment he made about "expecting" a recovery within 4 years. To hold him accountable shows your ignorance. Besides, if the Republican Party would get the h*ll out of his GD way, the economy would probably be in a little better shape.

A Few More Obama Failures ---

        http://www.forbes.com/sites/beltway/2011/09/06/obamas-failure-on-jobs-four-damning-charts/

CAN YOU FIND A CHART A LITTLE OLDER?? How about dealing in the real world> How about a little Facts Checking into a biased article? Let we help you.

how to misuse charts 101A. Daniel, you give a wonnnnnderful class. Let us start with chart number 4.
A glance is to give us the impression that the whole massive drop is Obama’s fault. Instead you fail to point out that during the Bush era from 2001 to the beginning of 2009, the number of Americans employed dropped from about 64 million to 59 million, a loss of 5 million jobs, many of them, BTW, manufacturing jobs. This despite the American home ownership dream act and lots of deregulation and trillion or so in tax cuts and about 5 or so trillions in deficit spending. From the beginning of the Obama administration, late January 2009, to today, we have a drop down to 58 million Americans employed. A loss of 1 million jobs.
Let us compare. After 8 years of Republican economic policy we lose 5 million jobs, and if we are generous and ignore the fact that a filibustering minority of Republican Senators are running a good part of the show, we see that Hercules digging poo poo out of the stables of Augeas managed to lose only 1 million jobs after 3 years. The graphic trend is that we see a leveling out under Obama, in contrast to the precipitous fall under Bush and GOP economic philosophy.

Chart numero 3-o. I love this one. If we saw the BLS numbers we would know that in August 2010 the long term unemployed numbered 6.2 million and that this August it numbered about less at 6.034 million.

That’s a drop, not a gain as seen in your chart, the percentages a bit deceitful no?
Considering the 5 million lost under Bush and a million lost under Obama are you really surprised?

You do know that in many cases, companies tend to hire individuals who have been jobless for shorter durations first. Note that a lot of those long term unemployed lost their jobs DURING THE Bush administration.

chart 2 No surprise there. Blacks last hired first fired. Unemployment will stay high until a lot of white folks are employed.

chart 1, surprisingly correct. But we also know that the stimulus was way too small according to many economists. But Obama could not squeeze more spending out of the filibustering GOP minority. So yes, a few million too few jobs would be a failure. However as failures go, it pales in comparison to the abysmal failure of the Bush tax cuts. His Council on Economic Advisors predicted an average growth of 194,000 net new jobs per month due to the tax cuts. Over 8 years that would be a gain of 18.6 million new jobs. Instead there were essentially no new net jobs under Bush. So while Obama was a failure in getting about 3-4 million new jobs, Bush’s much more spectacular failure of implementing GOP economic and government philosophy outshines that from sea to shining sea.

So intellectually bankrupt that it won’t even show this chart.
        http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/MSNBC/Sections/TVNews/MSNBC%20TV/Maddow/Blog/2010/04/jobloss_scale.JPG
        So what’snext?????
To be frank, my constant perusing of the Forbes.com website shows that an adult needs to be in charge to make sure that the facts and figures are used properly by the children. It would help. People like me wouldn’t have to go around shooting not so intellectual ducks in a barrel.

Polls conducted in the beginning of September are always right on.

Just like in 2008 when McCain was ahead.

Or in 1980 when Jimmy Carter was ahead.

Have fun with your hypothetical win, and the GOP will make sure to actually get the win.

Offshore accounts are not illegal. Most wealthy democrats have them. There is no evidence whatsoever to support any cheating on taxes by Romney. The IRS audits almost everone in Romeny's income bracket. They are relentless when it comes to tax enforcement. Want to try something that is actually true for a change or just keep doing the usual left wing diversionary innuendo approach to avoid Obama's failed record?

A 5-point lead right after a convention for the incumbent is nothing to celebrate, especially if he can't break the 50% barrier and there are still 5% undecided. It's all downhill for Obama from here on. Romney has a huge war chest. The airways will be covered with ads showing Obama in his own words in 2008 and what he has done with those words. Lights out.

We were losing 750K jobs a month, now adding jobs, Dow was at 6500, now at 13,400, GM saved, 3 million private sector jobs added ... Republicans can huff and puff and tell us how worst off things are, but they have slowly improved despite a near depression and Republican obstructionism. Reducing the treasury by giving tax breaks to millionaires will NOT make things better, will make things worst. Tea Party people, if you have a high school education, then step up and take a Macroeconomics course please.

The thing I love most about the Republican party is that it's DYING.

Look at the demograhics and it's obvious that the GOP is going the way of the WIG party.

That being said, there is nothing more dangerous than a badly wounded animal. They will say and do ANYTHING to win and they are doing it right this minute. They are out there trying to STEAL another election just like they did in 2000 and 2004. They know the only way they can win is to cheat and if they lose this one they are DONE, so they are DESPERATELY engaged in voter suppression and every other possible form of election rigging.

Pay attention, you'll probably never see anything like this one again.

                          Bye bye GOP

Following the Republican't convention, this race can be summed up for the layman as follows:

                            For Texas families, this
week has been tougher than a $5 steak. Family came to visit and it was a goat
                            rodeo.

You were expecting a nice visit including some plans to take care of grandma
now that she can't live alone and where your nephew could go to college.
Instead, you got cousins with bad table manners who hogged all the mashed
potatoes and never even offered to help clean up the table, much less bring any
food. Cousin Bob asked for a loan to buy a couple of Cadillacs and plastic
                            surgery for his show dog.

You went out to eat and they ordered the wine that cost the same as your extra
job and then stuck you with the bill although they were wearing diamond wrist
watches. Their idea for grandma's care involved allowing one of their friends
to invest her savings in a risky upstart and giving her a voucher for her
health care that will cover half a year. The rest of her health care is up to
                            you.

Aunt Bessie spent the whole week standing in your bedroom to make sure you
weren't doing anything she doesn't like. And then Uncle Clint spent the entire
evening talking to any empty chair thinking it was Napoleon.

They argued among themselves. They tried to look in your wife's private parts
and asked your son in law for proof of citizenship.

You were relieved when they left but more than a little frightened that they
                            might come back.

Fear not. This week the good relatives are coming. They are easy to get along
with. They are willing to help with grandma and your nephew's education because
they believe in the family. They have ideas, and a tool box to put those ideas
to work. They are not afraid of hard work and don't need to see anyone's
papers. They trust you to make your own decisions about your religion and your
                            goals.

They want to give you a tax break to make ends meet and only ask the relatives
with a couple of Cadillacs and diamond wrist watches to pitch in to make up for
                            eating all the mashed potatoes.

Texas Democrats are glad the Republican national convention is over because
Texas Democrats know that Texas deserves better and so does America.

Enjoy this week and know that the good relatives are here.

I like what Clinton said, to paraphrase, the Republican argument seems to be this "We don't think you've cleaned up the mess we handed you quickly enough, so hand the reigns back over to us so we can re-implement the failed policies that got us in this mess in the first place"!

Funny, Democrats controlled the both the House and the Senate from 2003-2010.

No Democrat had any hand in the fiscal crisis? Just the big bad GOP.

I am not even so much of a party guy that I cannot look back on the GWB years and understand he made some fundamental mistakes, but I guess Barack Husein Obama is just a vicitim of gridlock and above any criticism.

I just want the guy to take some responsibility. He wanted the job in 2008 and he knew the "mess" he was inheriting, and now after he fails I am suppose to feel sorry for the guy that supposedly has all the answers?

The economy is only a part of the voter dissatisfaction. It's not even the top difference maker. Obama won in 2008 on the shoulders of independents and a few Republican crossovers. These people are especially angry at Obama has become. He hasn't been the uniter that they thought candidate Obama was. No wonder he has only 37% of independents supporting him after getting 69% in 2008.

The system is rigged. America is unjust. Opportunity is dead. You didn’t build that.

                            Dammit, where’s mine?

Oh, and Republicans are the people who rigged the system. They’re trying to take away your rights to vote, to health care, to education, to housing. They hate women, gays and immigrants. They don’t pay their fair share and they’re un-American.

Barack Obama lights candles, Mitt Romney spreads darkness, and Osama bin Laden is dead.

There, I saved you the time of watching the Democratic convention. For three grating days, demands for more government spending were coupled with sweeping character assassinations of Romney. The GOP is not just wrong; it is immoral.

                            see more videos

                            Don’t agree? You’re not patriotic.

It turns out that the party that left God out of its platform has a religious zeal for its leader. “We believe in Barack Obama,” Sen. John Kerry thundered, to uproarious applause.

Folks, we’ve entered Dear Leader territory.

The wild, outlandish claims that America is corrupt, Republicans are super-villains and Obama is a super-hero were made by every speaker over three raucous nights. A president, a first lady, a former president, a sitting vice president, top members of Congress, labor leaders, celebrities, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters, blacks, whites, Latinos — all stayed on the scorched-earth message softened only by homilies to Obama.

Something shocking is happening to the Democratic Party. Its committed adherents are whipping themselves into a frenzy of grievance that justifies seeing their fellow Americans as both evil and a free-cash machine.

Obama did not singlehandedly create this mad orgy, but he lit the match and shows the way. On this, he is a true leader, a transformative one. His invocation of FDR is not unwarranted, even as his channeling of Lincoln’s pain smacked of cheesy self-reverence.

When he says voters “will face the clearest choice of any time in a generation,” he understates the fact. The two paths are a twain that shall never meet.

His rhetorical skills, uncompromising ambition and 1,000-watt smile were on full display last night, unfortunately in service to a vision that would surely bankrupt America.

Instead of a guarantee of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, our culture would be reshaped by a growing collectivist power, vested in the state, that would command ever more resources and control. The claim of “leveling the playing field” is, in reality, a plan to control the outcome.

As famously promised, the financial crisis has not been wasted. The recession lingers for many families. Unemployment remains stuck at a destructive level. The deficit soars — we borrow nearly $3 billion a day, $20 billion a week, $1 trillion a year.

These are serious problems to most mortals, but for him, they are rich opportunities to expand the reach of Washington. The soaring debt is not soaring enough, so more treasure must be thrown into the bonfire of his vanities. It is a fire consuming the future under the guise of fairness.

This is not mere class warfare. That’s just a tactic. The goal, as it always has been for his kind throughout history, is to accumulate power that the elite can wield without accountability or checks and balances.

Give the man his due. We have not seen his like in our times. His charisma and political skills are unmatched. If only they were admirably used.

Obama promised to unite the country and, his lie exposed, is now determined to win re-election by any means necessary. He may succeed.

Beware, America. The wraps have come off.

Obama is unbound and the delegates in the convention hall went home in full revolutionary spirit. They don’t want to unite America. They want to conquer it.

                            Barack Obama did build that.

Barack Obama, tell us about Frank Marshall Davis or Bill Ayers. Surely you remember Mr. Davis. After all, your mother knew him all too well. Mr. Ayers, a known terrorist, responsible for at least a dozen bombings, helped your early Illinois campaign by raising money, thru his organization Underground Weather. Davis, a well known Communist. Tell us about your trip to Pakistan ('81) with Pakistani Wahid Hamid.

Please tell us why you have been influenced by the writings of Karl Marx, the prelude to Communism. Share with us your association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Do you justify this man's message by condemning our country by saying, "God bless America? No, God Damn America"? Was this a forethought supporting your belief in Marxism?

Continuously demanding Republicans' tax returns is just plain silly.

Everyone has something that they hide from the general public. Something that is shared only with a spouse, or accountant, or the IRS, or lawyer, or best friend, or doctor, or teacher, or no one at all. While it could be argued that any of these hidden items “go to the person's character,” very few actually have any likely significance for the nation as a whole.

One very major exception to this is the secret that Obama has shared only with Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Putin. In a conversation with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on March 26th, Obama admitted that he was planning to bow to some Russian demand, but that he would have to wait until after the election to do it.

What is it that he doesn't want us to know now? He clearly believes that if we were to find out about it, we would not re-elect him. Given the subject of the meeting, it seems likely that Obama has agreed to leave America vulnerable to nuclear blackmail. Almost as frightening: what the have Russians agreed to give him in return?

The only poll that counts is the one Diebold announces. No paper trail. No audit. Here is the result.
