Biden: Romney can't say which loopholes he'd close to lower taxes

MILFORD, OH – Citing Mitt Romney's appearance on NBC's Meet the Press earlier in the day, Vice President Joe Biden took aim Sunday at Romney's failure to name specific tax loopholes he would close to lower taxes and balance the budget.

"He said that he's gonna pay for all these tax cuts by closing the loopholes, but when asked by Mr. Gregory what loopholes he'd close, he couldn't name one," Biden told a crowd of 700 supporters at a western Ohio high school.

"All this has a giant price tag and it's not going to come from closing loopholes for millionaires," he added.

On NBC, host David Gregory asked Romney to specify how he would eliminate tax deductions and exceptions in order to compensate for the enormous financial consequences of his deep tax cut proposals.

Romney responded only by noting that "people at the high end" would have fewer opportunities for tax exemptions, but he declined to pinpoint any specific numbers or policies.

“High income taxpayers are going to have fewer deductions and exemptions... Those numbers are going to come down. Otherwise, they'd get a tax break. And I want to make sure people understand, despite what the Democrats said at their convention. I am not reducing taxes on high income taxpayers. I'm bringing down the rate of taxation, but also bringing down deductions and exemptions at the high end so the revenues stay the same, the taxes people pay stay the same. Middle income people are going to get a break. But at the high end, the tax coming in stays the same. But we encourage small business, because small business is able to keep more of what it makes and therefore hire more people, which is my priority.”

The stop in Clermont County, a heavily-Republican area that supported John McCain by a 2-1 margin in 2008, was Biden's final campaign event of a two-day swing through Ohio. He will return to the Buckeye State next Wednesday to campaign in Dayton.

I find it disgusting how the panel specifically Peggy Noonan calls Romney, Governor Romney which he no longer is but calls President Obama, Mr. Obama when in fact he is the sitting President. The GOP is so beat up over having a black President they can't even call him by his proper title but will continue to call Romney by a title he hasn't held for years and did such a horrible job didn't even run for a second term. Pretty sad and petty.

This vote, on a Potemkin "Obama Budget," is not intended to be taken seriously. It's a stunt designed to get a slag into the newscycle, and they tend to work. What happens is a Republican legislator presents a "budget proposal" that's designed to be a satirical presentation of an "Obama budget." Democrats don't vote for it, because they recognize that it bears no resemblance to their budgetary preferences. Back in March, it was Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) who got the Harlequin role in this bit of legislative commedia dell'arte. As Dave Weigel reported at the time, Mulvaney presented the pretend Obama budget with a knowing wink:

I have given this post the headline "Senate Unanimously Rejects A Budget Offered By Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.)" at the suggestion of Michael Brendan Dougherty of Business Insider, who correctly notes that the news cycle is going to remember this bit of legislative maneuvering very differently, and characterize it as a defeat for some "Obama Budget." As Dougherty correctly reports:

PTNY, are you a Marxist or just another Democrat in the dark?

In order to defeat those that are purposely destroying our economy, I think we must make a clear distinction between those Democrats who vote Democrat because of family traditon--who are populists, dreamers, or old-fashioned bleeding-heart liberals--and those who are behind the radicals in the SIEU; that is, the marxist party-within-a-party that Obama and the SEIU represent.

Oddly, many of those in the first group are unaware of the existence of the second. They're the useful, incurious idiots who elected Obama. Dumb as it may sound, I believe they do not realize that their party has been taken over by the communists. That's what happens under the relentless drip, drip, drip of leftist propaganda as practiced by western media: our loved ones have been brainwashed.

If we take this approach, we may be able to expose and marginalize those in the Democrat party who are rabid Marxists.

Our unemployment numbers going DOWN to 8.1% only because our workforce participation is the LOWEST since 1981. And our debt grew more in three years under Obama than it did in eight years of Bush... yup, we're on the path to prosperity, all righty!

Obama says love me long time I promise not cum in your mouth. I promise if you vote for me one more time you will make boo coo bucks. Here is the truth everyone is ignoring if Obama is reelected he is a lame duck president. He will not control the House and he may lose control of the Senate so he will not be able to pass a single bill unless he come to agreement with the Republicans and that is not likely to happen because of his arrogance.

Think about this one Obama will have to defend his economic policies in those debates and he has yet to come up with a viable plan to fix this mess he has made 10 times worst. That is not going to sit well with the American people if he still has no plan in fact Romney will more then likely make him spell out his plan that one I want to see.

Obama has plenty of material to point to... he pulled the US out of threat of recession. He saved the automobile industry, he used TARP funds to keep more than a million teachers, firefighters and police on the pay rolls. the DJIA was 7k when he took office and today it is thriving at 13,300 points and climbing. the GAO has released a study indicating that by 2016, 12 million new jobs will have been created. He'll also point to a newly released study that shows seniors will pay more out of pocket under a voucher plan.

the one with no plan is Romney, and by the time the debates are over, he'll be toast with less than 45% of the vote....

he pulled the US out of threat of recession.

Our growth at 1.5% coupled with 43 straight months of unemployment above 8.1% is hardly something to brag about...as our long term GDP is on pace to be overshadowed by out long term debt. In fact, it's quite sad:

                http://www.mybudget360.com/burden-unsupportable-debt-us-debt-to-gdp-growing-central-banks-peak-debt-2012/

                He saved the automobile industry

Yeah, delaying the inevidable is "saving it" all right:

                http://www.forbes.com/sites/louiswoodhill/2012/08/15/general-motors-is-headed-for-bankruptcy-again/

The DOW could hit 20,000 for all anyone cares...what good is it if our debt keeps soaring through the roof and more people are on unemployment and welfare than any other time in our history?

the GAO has released a study indicating that by 2016, 12 million new jobs will have been created

The one-sided soundbyte that the left believes just keeps on giving....you can create 12 million new jobs...great! But at what cost to the taxpayer?...and the all-important other side of the equation...how great is it, really, if during that same time 13 million jobs are lost and millions of people have actually given up looking for work?

Here is a fact that liberals like to ignore. Fact Reagan had a worse unemployment rate than Obama and drove it down from 10.8% to 8 % in 14 months a little fact you liberals will never acknowledge, because it makes Obama look completely incompetent which he is.

So Obama drove it down from 10 to 8.1. Good comparison?

Well no, it was 7.8% when Obama got in and it was above 9% for more than 2 years. The only reason it's been going down is because we've had the lowest workforce participation we've had in 31 years.

In other words, under Reagan, terrible employment numbers got better. Under Obama, declining numbers went off the cliff and are only skewing to look like they're going in the right direction because so many people have been giving up looking for work. And the numbers still aren't as good as when he first took office.

Actually, during the stagflation years of Carter, mortgage interest rates were at their highest...close to 20%. Yup, a credit card rate on your home mortgage. And Carter's unemployment averaged 7.6%...a terrible number....that Obama could only dream of hitting.

How, exactly, does asking someone to show an ID to vote "disenfranchising" any legitimate voter?

Romney on MTP stated he would initiate an across the board tax cut and close deduction loopholes on high income wage earners.

I am a layman but, imho this is a likely scenario. He will do the cuts close minor loopholes for the wealthy (which in his opinion means they are not really getting a tax cut). So by closing some nonessential loopholes, the wealthy come out about even.

He will then end many of the important deductions that the middle class presently have available to them. So you will take home more pay and that's it, no more tax refund as you now know it.

Then, he will cut federal funding to many state government programs (education, housing, transportation, healthcare etc.) thereby placing more of the financial responsibility on state government to come up with the dough (do you see his smaller government?)

So what happens next? If state government has to pay more for programs due to decrease in federal funding what choice would they have but to cut services or RAISE TAXES

so in the end the wealthy continue to get paid and the middle class screwed...

                            just imho

Mitt Romney On Obamacare: 'I'm Not Getting Rid Of All Of Health Care Reform': Mitt Romney said on Sunday that if he were elected president he would keep portions of President Barack Obama's signature health care law, a seemingly abrupt turn on an early campaign promise.

USAF50, you have lost all credit here.... Romney has repeatedly used the phrase "repeal and replace"... In FACT, he stated he would replace Obamacare with provisions that eliminate pre-existing conditions.... wait, Obama already DID THAT.

"According to Smith, when he found and translated the plates, they told of a lost tribe of Israel that migrated to the Americas many hundreds of years ago. These first Americans built a flourishing and advanced civilization, but one branch, the Lamanites, killed their righteous relatives, the Nephites. For this and their rejection of Christ's teachings, God cursed the Lamanites with dark skin and a degraded existence. The story maintained that the Lamanites would not regain white skin and a civilized way of life until they accepted Christ's teachings. Thus, the heavenly beings instructed Smith not only to restore the true Christian church, but also to bring salvation to Native Americans."

Hey Joe Thomas - read the communist manifesto, check out the sordid facts about the Killer Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin, et al, then tell me you know what a real communist is and how he behaves. There are no communists joe, never have been - only right wing, power hungry, cirrupt, socialistic mannered dictators who control the army. Thats not the case here in the USA. Communism is a dream, a Utopian paradise that comes to those who love to purge, kill, maim and destroy. Here on earth, in the ral world, the rich continue to fight to retain their power and their wealth and their illegal status of ruling elite.

I live in the PRC and Communism does not exist here as I see it. What I see is a race to the top of the wealthy May Day pole, starting and ending at the top of the ladder. You sir, remain in the dungeon of ignorance.

Mitt fails with specifics because he knows he is bought and paid for and only with a GOP congressional majority will he sign any bill coming across his desk - he will be ordered to do so by the fanatical right wing. What is needed will not get done: income tax revision, anti-voter suppression laws, regulatory relaxation in critical areas like natural gas, pipelines and drilling for oil, care for the environment, making huge tax rewards for US corporations in start up or refurbishing in the manufacturing sector, higher tariffs for imports to level the field, public campaign financing to stop super pacs from dominating the money flow, Congressional oversight by the citizenry, a real and sincere attempt by both parties to govern and legislate according the needs of the entire country, reduce farm subsidies that award the corporations and do not benefit the small fams, 90% reduction of troops in Afghanistan, and a group of politicans both left and right and middle to focus on this country first. This means the early dismissal of Eric Cantor, John Boehner and Mitch McConnell, and any democrats who fail to perform for the country.

The issue remains for the GOP - they took an oath to make sure the POTUS is a one term guy, ergo their oath was that America should also fail.

I truly think Romney is done.....he is lobbed softball questions by David Gregory (who did a terrible job interviewing him) and he STILL screwed up many of the answers.

Romney doesn't state which loopholes they'll close.....states he wants to keep parts of health care reform but won't say how he'll pay for it.....won't release his tax returns etc. etc. etc...

There are times I think this must be some bizarre social experiment to see how little one candidate can do and still be elected. Romney is the worst candidate for President I've seen in my 25 years of following politics.

Doc, I totally agree, Rmoney is the worst candidate the Republicans could muster. I also agree he is done. Many of the polls show him already having enough electoral votes locked in to win reelection. I sure hope that the polls are right but really, I don't hold much faith in polls.

Unlike Obama in his health care legislation Romney has stated that he will take input from the democrats. Since it takes legislation to do this he expects to work with the democrats to finalize the selections. He eliminated $1.5B deficit in Mass. and worked with a democratic controlled legislature. He will get the job done or he will go in four years as well.

CKSM, you might want to ask the Governor that followed Romney about what a mess he left the state in. The ONLY policy Massachusetts' residents benefited from was his health care plan, which ironically was used as a model for the PACA.

As for feedback, both parties participated heavily in feedback, as did health care providers, insurance companies, former Romney administration officials, etc.

Ray, Did you not ever hear the tapes of Obama telling the republicans to shut up they lost? Even the liberal press noted that Obama would not accept any input from the republicans on the health care legislation which also used a very unfavorable method to pass. As to the governor following Romney are you trying to play the Obama blame game and not take responsibility? Did Reagan constantly blame Carter for his shortcomings?
