In Florida, President Obama slammed Romney, arguing the GOP candidate's math doesn't add up. Meanwhile, a pizza parlor owner swept the president off his feet. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.
MELBOURNE, Fla. – Hours after his opponents Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan did a Sunday morning TV show blitz, President Barack Obama criticized them for not offering more specifics on how they would keep revenue stable while not raising taxes on the wealthy.
“Governor Romney and his allies tell us that we can somehow lower our deficit by spending trillions on new tax breaks for the wealthy. Listen, you’ve got to do the math because when my opponents were asked about it today, they couldn’t. It was like two plus one equals five,” Obama told a crowd of more than 3,000 in a gymnasium at the Florida Institute of Technology here.
When asked during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” what tax loopholes he would eliminate, Romney got no more specific than telling host David Gregory, “high income taxpayers are going to have fewer deductions and exemptions.”
On ABC News’ “This Week,” Ryan said Romney and he would consult with Congress before deciding which loopholes to cut. “We want to do this with the consent of the elected representatives of the people and figure out what loopholes should stay or go,” he said.
Of their lack of specifics, Obama said, “That’s not bold leadership, that’s bad math.”
Ever mindful of his local audience, Obama also focused heavily on Medicare, an important issue to the 17.6 percent of Florida’s population over age 65 – more than four percentage points over the national average.
He cited a new study by Harvard Professor David Cutler that found seniors who qualify for Medicare beginning in 2023 would see higher premiums over the course of their retirement under the Romney/Ryan plan, which would give seniors the option of getting a voucher to help pay for private insurance in addition to the traditional government-run program.
Cutler, one of the Obama campaign’s chief health care advisers in 2008, conducted the study on behalf of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a liberal advocacy organization.
“Basically your profits would decline by the thousands so their profits could rise by the billions,” Obama said of the study’s conclusion.
The Romney campaign responded with a statement from spokesman Ryan Williams calling the study "discredited."
"President Obama’s latest false attacks are a sign of desperation. Only one candidate in this race has robbed today’s Medicare of $716 billion to pay for Obamacare – Barack Obama. He has done nothing to reform Medicare for the long haul and prevent it from going bankrupt, and on his watch family health care premiums have increased by nearly $2,500," the statement read in part.
In Melbourne, the president also mentioned another issue important to voters on this slice of Florida’s coast, whose economy is buoyed in part by the space industry.
“Here on the Space Coast, we started a new era of American exploration that is creating more jobs right here,” Obama said, noting the Curiosity rover that landed on Mars last month.
He warned that Republicans would stifle the research and development that his administration has encouraged.
“This is where we’ve got a choice. We could, as the House Republican budget proposes, cut back on research and technology or we can continue to be at the cutting edge because that’s what we’ve always been about,” he said.
The president is now on his way to West Palm Beach for the fourth and final stop on his two-day Sunshine State campaign swing, after which he’ll return to the White House – hopefully, he said this afternoon, in time to catch Sunday Night Football.
“We intend to be finished to get home in time for kickoff,” he told the crowd in Melbourne.

Bad math! What a joke and liar Obama is. Here's the numbers that are important
Real unemployment 11.2% - debt 16 trillion dollars
Obama's huge lie. His number one promise if re-elected he will use the money saved from Afghanistan and Iraq to pay down the debt and create jobs. LIE. The money to fight these wars is borrowed. There is no savings - talk about BAD MATH and LIES!!
His newest promise, like his others is a lie.
Bad math??? So then what was "real" unemployment under Dubya? The unemployment numbers are figured and reported precisely the same way as they were under Dubya and numerous presidents preceding him. So what the hell is your point, that the number reported is less than the actual number, just was it was for Bush??? Tell us something we don't know pal.
Comrade Obama
Obama's math is much worse than Romney's.
In Obamaland, 2+2= -$5 trillion, 2+3= +8% unemployment as the new normal, 2+4= huge increases in SSD and food stamp recipients. And to the American electorate, 4+0= the number of years Obama will be in office.
I watched Ryan Sunday and could not have been less impressed. Same old party line. I was hoping I had missed something about him. I guess not. If he has replaced William F. Buckley as the intellectual head of the conservative movement they are done already. There is an old saying that "If you will do anything to be president you shouldn't be one." It seems to me that this election has come down to the fact that the conservative agenda caused the mess we are in and now they want to fix it because Obama has not fixed it quickly enough. Ordinarily with unemployment being this high for the sustained period it has been the other party wouldn't really even have to run to get into office. I guess this isn't ordinarily.
Barack Obama:
Alias Barry Soetoro pawns himself as Barack Obama, the humanitarian, the POTUS, the campaign for hope and change. But we know better. Barry is a radical Marxist who was raised by Communist parents and Communist grandparents. His mentors were known Communists, his contacts in college were strictly Marxists supporters, Marxist professors and a group of Pakistani activists as stated in his book, "Dreams From My Father".
Barack Obama, tell us about Frank Marshall Davis or Bill Ayers. Surely you remember Mr. Davis. After all, your mother knew him all too well. Mr. Ayers, a known terrorist, responsible for at least a dozen bombings, helped your early Illinois campaign by raising money, thru his organization Underground Weather. Davis, a well known Communist. Tell us about your trip to Pakistan ('81) with Pakistani Wahid Hamid.
Share with us your ideals of socialism, after all you're a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), referred as the "New Party". Please tell us why you have been influenced by the writings of Karl Marx, the prelude to Communism. Share with us your association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Do you justify this man's message by condemning our country by saying, "God bless America? No, God Damn America"? Was this a forethought supporting your belief in Marxism?
United States of America………………you didn't build it Barack Obama.
Keep posting your tired, inane crap ad nausea, no one wants to read your drivel. The facist Right just ain't happy unless they're labeling someone as a Commie. Too bad you weren't around for the glory days of Red Baiting, you could have worked for Tail Gunner Joe McCarthy. Bet that would brighten your day, huh???

to bring federal spending under control, congress needs to set aside the current budgeting process and embrace zero based budgrting. make every department submit a budget stating how much they need and why. congress could then cut specific items from each department's wish list. if a department can't justify an expense, they won't get the money. of course this idea would never be accepte, because it flies against the spend first way the federal solons do business.
LongestByFar, he's only practicing rote. He hasn't provided a single truth or any independent thinking since he's been posting.
I'm guessing it's out of reach...
Given I'm allergic to nonesense I just scroll by his junk anyway.
gopers don't believe in science, math or reason. Period.
Wow 'there he goes again' , they are still using the following lie first uttered by Romney; it is mentioned again in the GOP spokesperson's reply:
The Romney campaign responded with a statement from spokesman Ryan Williams calling the study "discredited."
"President Obama’s latest false attacks are a sign of desperation. Only one candidate in this race has robbed today’s Medicare of $716 billion to pay for Obamacare – Barack Obama. He has done nothing to reform Medicare for the long haul and prevent it from going bankrupt, and on his watch family health care premiums have increased by nearly $2,500," the statement read in part.
I need to reiterate the following quotes from mitt romney then the reply from politifact. com.
mitt Romney said Barack Obama robs Medicare of
more than $700 billion to pay for Obamacare’
His statement was ‘Obama’s health care law had taken $716 billion from the fund to finance “his takeover of the health care system.”
On that statement
polifact.com explained this way:
(The claim that Obama cut $700 billion out of Medicare is relatively new. Not long ago, the oft-cited number was $500 billion. How did he manage to cut another $200
billion when no one was looking?
First things first: Neither Obama nor his health care law literally cut a dollar amount from the Medicare program’s budget.
Rather, the health care law instituted a
number of changes to try to bring down future health care costs in the program.
At the time the law was passed, those reductions amounted to $500 billion over
the next 10 years.
What kind of spending reductions are we talking about? They were mainly aimed
at insurance companies and hospitals,
not beneficiaries. The law makes significant reductions to Medicare
Advantage, a subset of Medicare plans run by private insurers. Medicare
Advantage was started under President George W. Bush, and the idea was that
competition among the private insurers would reduce costs. But in recent years
the plans have actually cost more than traditional Medicare. So the health care law scales back the payments to private insurers.
We (politifact.com) rate this statement (romney's) Mostly False.)
Another point, my medicare payments have not gone $2500, just a small percentage of the SS increase given this year. In fact due to the closing of much of the 'donut hole' coverage gap of the past, I will not be paying full price for the prescriptions I use for this year. You need to blame the Big Pharmaceuticals and insurance companies for raising rates to families, not the president.
Bottomline is that the Romney/Ryan condidacy is looking more and more silly.
Here is some math for the divided GOP (those in Tea Party and those others with some sanity like Bush Sr. had when running against Reagan for repub president ballot - was it "Voodoo Economics" he called Ron's trickle down theory...):
since 1980 assume we lost 40 million good manufacturing and supplier/resource jobs at 50K/year each = 4e7x5e4 =$2 trillion of taxable income the 40 million made per year, and those became an average of 25K/year jobs in service/fastfood/etc industries = 4e7x2.5e4 = $1 trillion....now you know why the working class pays less taxes into the treasury their lost good jobs made them do that. Now assume we lose 20% of that trillion in treasury tax receipts = $200 billion/year...now assume you can multiply that 20 or 30 times since it started 30 or so years ago... now you see $5 trillion or so of our deficit PLUS the interest on the borrowing our treasury did to make up for that so make it $8 trillion....add that to the Bush tax cuts for the wealthier say making 500k/year and more and WaLa - we have a balanced budget....You can spin it any ways you want GOP - your trickle down economics have totaly undermined the TREASURY of the USA!!!!!!!!!!
Bad Math? You mean like claiming you created 4.5 million jobs when CNN stated last week the net number was 350,000. How about some real number like the most Americans ever employed was 147 million--in 2007. Do I need to remind you who was the President then? There are 139 million employed now--you do the math! Go to this link to check my numbers Biden!
http://articles.businessinsider.com/2011-02-10/markets/29983414_1_million-net-jobs-new-jobs-payroll-data
Yea, yea, yea, but when dubby went out of office, how many jobs were being lost every month? LOL Ducky, you are the first person in many years who has tried to make dubby look like a rational leader. Good luck with that...
yea, yea, yea, but how many jobs were being lost every month before the democrats took over congress. You homers keep saying that the president does not create jobs so how can he lose them.
"It's hammer time!" President Obama is on a non-stop roll until 6 Nov. bitch slapping that capital vulture and politician for hire "mo romney and his little bitch ryan."
LTC Rattus, USA, ret.
Romney - Tax returns? Prove to us you have the values you claim. Period.
Obama - College transcripts? Prove to us you have the values you claim. Period.
HopeisGone
Obama has proven he does not have the values, morality, honesty, Qualifications or anything else to run this country. He failed miserably at being a community organizer and accomplished absolutely nothing as a senator, except to say he was present. He hasn't held a position in the real world to account for much of anything. We don't need to see anything from Obama since we have lived through this total FAILURE of a person! His papers will only confirm he is not legitimate for being anything in the real world. He may have book sense, but shows he has no common sense.
rattus....enjoy your new veteran benefits plan under Obama....and remember, don't blame Bush...Thank Obama!:
"The Obama plan proposes a $200 annual fee for retired military families who want to continue coverage under a Tricare-for-Life program that supplements Medicare coverage for veterans over 65. The proposal would save the government $6.7 billion over 10 years, according to the White House.
The president's proposal would also eliminate co-pays for mail-order drugs and institute a percentage co-pay rather than a flat-fee for in-pharmacy purchases. The White House says the move will encourage military families to use less expensive prescriptions and save the U.S. $20 billion over 20 years."
Hope,
I am well aware of Tricare. My wife really keeps up on it. Our new baby has some health problems related to being born a little bit premature. She has some asthma related to premature birth. Other than that she is well. When military hospitals fill a prescription...they are kind of like COSTCO. Military docs and medics write prescriptions based upon generic names (in the event of recognition problems as some drugs have diferrent international brand names) The pharmacy through DODs negotiated price is kind of like COSTCo in that they dispense brand and non-brand drugs issued under the generic name.
What DOD is preparing to do via "Tricare formulary?" is to create a tier 1,2, ande 3 brand name preferred, and non-preferred brand name as in Federal Blue Cross (members of congress get) system of preference.
I happen to believe that American citizens should be entitled to the best form of medical care that this nations has available.
I am in my second year of a graduate school of social work. Upon graduation I will become an advocate for disabled veterans and their families...in a private sector setting. Quite a transition for me. I started prep school at West Point prior to my 18th bday......and had 4 years of "The Craft School and 20.5 years of active duty.
For me Hope is Not Gone. Years ago, as a junior officer, I learned that one "often sad and sometimes happy....fact of life "is that things never remain the same."
The U.S. is not a static entity as is the Latin Language. It is slow to change, but it has moved into another era of her development......whether we like it or no.
A pleasure to meet you. It is getting easier to type with a couple of missing fingers.......but this is physical rehab and hand excercise for me. Got to get ready to lead a group of veterans that are adjusting to life with physical and emotional impairments.
These are by products of Bush's, what did he call it? I forget? "pre-emtive war or something like that?" His nation building attempts in Iraq and Afganistan misused our troops and our military. It indebted the country as two wars with tax cuts and outsourcing logistics will.
All of these forces helped bring about pushing us into a new era a little faster than we otherwise might have?
All the best, and a pleasure to meet you.
However, try to have hope and dreams because they are the precursors of action.
Have a great day,
Rat
Thank you for the kind words Bill.
Forget Colonel! I am just a retired Soldier. To you my name is Rat.
Have a great day.
Huh?
The President who has never passed a budget (as required by law) since taking office is criticizing his opponents for a lack of specifics?
This isn't politics on behalf of Americans. This is politics on behalf of the politicians.
... bring on the debates ..... wanna see romney look like a fish outta water ... FLIP FLOP FLIP FLOP ..... MITT DA TWIT .... GASPING FOR HIS LAST BREATH ... THE REPUBLICANS EVEN THOUGHT PALIN WAS BETTER THAN HIM LAST ELECTION ... HMMMMMM PERHAPS THEY WERE CORRECT IN 2008 ..... FLIP FLOP FLIP FLOP
Romney goes on Meet The Press and tells America he will keep parts of 'Obamacare' because he had those benefits in his own plan, in Massachusetts. This is a reversal of his vow to end 'Obamacare' on his first day in office - shake the Etch-a-sketch.
Then, later in the day his people realize the teabaggers aren't going for this plan, they hate the idea of any kind of healthcare reform. So Romney's people issue a statement walking back his own words from earlier in the day. Shake the Etch-a-sketch and shake it again. A new world's record in flip flopping.
This is the problem of trying to have it both ways, something he has tried to do the entire campaign. You end up with neither side believing you.
Romney does have a plan - it's just hidden wheverer he hid tose tax returns!
The plan involves a return to slavery to squeeze even more money out of us all for the super rich like Romney the robber baron!
Reb,
Mo Romney is not hiding his tax returns. He is now trying to stay out of jail.
Cut that wretched old Prick some slack!
The working tax payer's of America have only two tax exemptions , their Mortgage Deduction and Dependants and Ryan wants to eliminate those two , The Republicans want also to raise every ones taxes who make less than $ 200 k per year , And then give the most wealthy Americans Another Tax BREAK , as THIS IS WHAT GOT US INTO THIS MESS IN THE FIRST PLACE , No revenue to operate America .
Just cant believe Republican voters would even think about allowing a Mormon to Run this country , GOD will punish America if R/R is elected .
“Governor Romney and his allies tell us that we can somehow lower our deficit by spending trillions on new tax breaks for the wealthy. Listen, you’ve got to do the math because when my opponents were asked about it today, they couldn’t. It was like two plus one equals five,” Obama told a crowd
LMFAO... This coming from a man who has tried his best to spend our way out of debt...just too rich LMAO
Romney hasn't got a snowball's chance in Heeeeell of winning this election. Once he has no choice but to run his mouth about his real agenda, and Lyin' Ryan rams his foot in his mouth a few dozen time, these two will hand the house back to us Democrats, and we can proceed to fix this mess much faster. If the Republicons do retain the house it's going to be one Presidential Executive Order after another, basically rendering the House irrelevant, and you can take that to the bank.
If you want your voice heard you better elect some representatives who are moderates and can actually get something done. Deadlock will not be tolerated again. In his second term President Obama will open up a can of wup-arse on you the size of Alaska if you people don't try to work with him in a bipartisan way. You'd better elect some less radical representatives or your voice will be silenced. Also your party may pass into history if you don't straighten up. We will only tolerate so much insanity and we are at our limit. Just a word to the wise.
Ryan Williams calling the study "discredited."
Romney's math is not exactly all that wrong.
After he rapes the middle class, cuts programs for the poor and defunds AHC Act...it is possible the revenue stream created will help fill the government coffers...and the hedgefunds of the wealthy.
